I just remembered I have free will and can post whatever I want, so here are the misfits as chicken breeds, half based on my personal experiences, and half just on the vibes. (Perhaps I'll do the acolytes and staff later heheh)
Lenore
Plymouth Rock
Tumblr media
Morella
Buff Frizzle (bantam breed)
Tumblr media
Duke
Silver Laced Polish
Tumblr media
Pluto
Black Old English Game Bantam
Tumblr media
Berenice
Golden Sebright (Bantam breed)
Tumblr media
Eulalie
Blue Laced Red Wyandotte
Tumblr media
*(Note: bantam breeds, whether true bantams or bantam versions of regular breeds, are pretty much mini chickens. They're like... Half the size of regular chickens lmao. This includes their eggs, making their eggs perfect for halfing recipes!)

I LOVE YOUR CHICKENS!!! I'm a big chicken lover too!! What breeds are they? Do they have names?
YEAHHH SO DO I <33 Ohh boy here we go...
Our head rooster is Shmuel, and he's a rhode island red brahma mix! Then we have his son, Santa, who's mom was an olive egger! Then we have Rocket, the swedish flower hen rooster!
We have Big Red and Mavis, the rhode island reds, Janet the easter egger, Helen and Athena the olive eggers, Three ISA browns we can't tell apart so they're just the ISA browns-- Then we have Mama Karen the black jersey giant, Wendy and Odette the silver laced wyandottes, Annie and Rat Bird the blue stars, and my favorite girl Pumpkin who we dont know the breed of-- We also have Dweeb and Goldie the buff orpingtons.
Then we have Mulberry and Morrow--the first two we hatched ourselves. And we also have Cheese and Crackers, who are identical, but Cheese is a barred rock and Crackers is Mama Karens and Shmuels daughter. We also have two unnamed DweebxShmuel babies that we can't tell apart so we call them the Dweeblings.
Finally, we have Corn, the bantam silkie rooster, and his bantam silkie hens: Batman, Fifi, and Beans. (we also have Rampage the drake, and Momo and Elon Muscovy the duck hens) All my beloved creatures <3

I've learned something terrible. The buff laced Wyandotte is based on birchen (ER). The f1 grow outs are a mess.
So there are ... five? alleles off the extension gene in birds. Birchen is the second most dominant. Laced orpington and polish are built off of birchen, but cochin and wyandotte are both supposed to be built off of brown/patridge (eb). Which is recessive to birchen.
My blue laced red cochin things and my red shouldered blue laced yellow cross worked out because those crosses were with wyandotte that behaved as expected. I'm rather enamored with the second cross of the blue laced red things back to partridge, though. They're a hysterical mess. As expected. I just love that I get to figure out what's going on as they grow up. But I digress.
THESE buff laced projects look like fucking red shouldered yokohama.
Tumblr media
Like, I'm not really joking. Here's a pullet, too. They'd be piss poor red shouldered yokohama, but the pattern is pretty damn spot on, even if the color is terrible.
Not really sure what to do with the information. I need to make sure I select chicks for a pure brown base next year. Not sure how I'm supposed to do that when dominant white obliterates chick down pattern. Grow them all out. :/
The plan is to pair up one of these crosses with gold laced cochin next year. 50% of chicks will be EReb, like these guys. 50% will be ebeb, like I need. Unfortunately, 50% will be gold/red, and 50% will be dominant white. So I'm down to 25% of what I need. Not sure if I need that mahogany gene for proper color on the buff laced. Not sure if the original buff laced wyandotte had the mahogany gene or if these chicks have it just because they're also out of patridge cochin, which are mahogany based and it's expressed simply dominant. So ... there's a chance that I need to select for mahogany expression, too. I have no clue.
I think that's gotta be my full expectation for the buff laced project next year. Try to ... keep buff laced. No matter how shitty the pattern, if it looks like it's a messy as fuck brown based bird with dominant white, keep it. If it looks like one of these guys or a gold/red based one is these guys, eat it. I did not expect this to be a thing.
Doesn't mean I'm still not excited for the project, mind. I would still kill for a show type buff laced cochin. Not sure I'll ever get there, but you bet your britches I'll try.
But that also means I need to get my gold laced to show quality. I'm impressed with the gold laced grow outs I have from Cackle, but they are nothing compared to my blacks. And my blacks are nowhere near nationally competitive.
I'm trying.

It's been a very long time since I've been active so I wanted to make a quick little list of everyone I still have — with updated photos, especially!
I no longer live with my chickens — I moved out in December 2023 and had to leave my chickens behind, as I live in an apartment now. They still live with my parents so I still get to see them and certain responsibilities like their health and cleaning the coop are still mine.
Recently I split the flock and gave half of my chickens to a family friend who I trust will take good care of them, because my parents haven't taken care of them to my satisfaction.
Here are the chickens who, for one reason or another, remained here.
Tumblr media
Bee — Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, born May 2018. Honestly the worst at doing a rooster's job, but I love him anyway. He's very shy and very cute, can be a bit of a bully towards other chickens but is super well behaved with people!
Tumblr media
Florence — Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, born May 2018. Softest, fluffiest bird imaginable. It doesn't fully come across in photos but her feathers are incredibly plush! She's a bit nervous and seems lazy. It's part of her charm!
Tumblr media
Adelaide — Black Australorp, born May 2018. A very calm bird with a surprisingly raucous voice. She adores Bee and never leaves his side, and always snuggles up next to him at night.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tofu & Dumpling — Gold Laced Wyandottes, born June 2023. Two babies I accidentally acquired and they've been here ever since. They're always together! Quite shy since they didn't get handled much growing up, but naturally very curious so they'll approach anyone they find interesting. They like exploring the yard and the edge of the woods together.
~
The rest of the chickens in this list have been moved to their new home, where I will still be visiting them.
Tumblr media
Midnight — Gold Laced Wyandotte, born March 2013. My old lady! Calm and sweet, she took a shine to the younger chickens right away when they were little. At feeding times she usually calls the other hens over to come eat like they're her babies. She started doing this in the past year or so and I'm not sure why. It's very cute though.
Tumblr media
Moth — Barred Rock, probably born in 2018. Got her as an adult from my neighbor when he stopped wanting chickens so her age is an estimate. Survived a fox attack some years ago and lived in my room for two months while recovering, and she became a dear sweet bird in that time! She likes to follow people around and observe them.
Tumblr media
Magpie — Dominique, born May 2018. Nosy bird who likes to be in the middle of whatever I'm doing! She makes noises like a squeaky wheel instead of clucking, which is very entertaining.
Tumblr media
Crow — Dominique, born May 2018. Looks like a barred rock because of her single comb, but she is about two-thirds the size of one. Very small! Little baby who wants to be held and carried all the time. Likes to walk up to the nearest person and stand on their feet until she gets picked up, and she'll eventually start pecking my legs if I ignore her!
Tumblr media
Dawn — Silver Spangled Appenzeller, born May 2018. Independent and energetic, she's always wandering off to explore as soon as she gets the chance. Gets along with people better than with other chickens. She's always finding her way onto my lap or, preferably, into my sweater.

You have pet birds? If so, what species etc?
28 actually. I have backyard chickens, and ducks. ATM we have 3 baby chicks in the bathtub because they are too small to go outside, hence being in the bathroom with the birds.
More info beneath the cut because I love my babies but don't want to list all of them and clog people's feeds when no one cares lol
Edit: nevermind I have no idea how to add a cut and Google lied to me
I have
Chicky-chick (black sex link)
Regina George (black sex link)
Taco Bell (black sex link)
Bobbi (black sex link)
Peggy (buff orpington)
Eliza (buff orpington)
Presley (ameraucana)
Harriet (ameraucana)
Beans (ameraucana)
Priscilla (dominique)
Sam-I-Am (olive egger)
Ramona (olive egger)
Barbara (barnevelder)
Hazel (barnevelder)
Beatrice (silver laced wyandotte)
Caspian (silver laced wyandotte rooster)
Peter (svarthöna rooster)
Edmund (svarthöna rooster)
And the chicks, Susan and Lucy (white orpington) and.....an unnamed rhode island red.
Then there's Frankie, an absolutely massive Pekin, Percy Quackson, James Madison, Meg and Jo (black swedish) and Beth and Amy (blue swedish)
Here is pictures not of my specific birds, they aren't cooperative enough for that, but of their breeds and roughly what they look like
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can't fit pictures of duckies also so I will rb with em
But Priscilla is my precious baby and the first of our animals to show empathy to me, which is weird, because chickens aren't really supposed to show empathy at all? Even within their flocks they don't really show empathy. They'd rather eat each other alive. And we have animals that DO show empathy to humans. Dogs and cats, even goats are more affectionate at least, but no, it was the chicken. I was crying and she climbed onto my lap and cooed at me. None of our birds would do such a thing, none but her. I love her.

Thank u I would live for them !! What are their names? Also do you know the exact species like what kinda chicken each one is? I've seen there are like many kinds and they're so cool
Tumblr media
All the white ones, and the two black ones are Easter eggers. They lay blue eggs and are easily my favorites. That could be because they were the first 5 birds I got. Bonus photo of my favorites Onigiri and Torchic. Onigiri is the one with cross beak. She ended up being a sort of indoor chicken for a while. The other white one in that group is Chocobo. Hyrule is the brownish one and Hanako is the all black one. She had like 5 extra toes. Hyrule jumps on my shoulder now every time I go outside. I work from home and my coworkers love it when I work outside cause she always just chills on my shoulder for calls. She’s a very hard working lady~
The one with the strawberry in the other pictures and her sister are faverolles. I think so far that’s my next favorite. They just talk a lot and I think it’s cute. They also like to cuddle, not as much as the Easter eggers but the Easter eggers are the only ones I raised from chicks. Their names are Maha and Skittle.
The big round ones are silver laced red Wyandottes. They were actually retired show hens and they both acted like it for sure. I like to think they talked like retired broadway actresses. Their names were Madame and Chunk. They weren’t very friendly but they kept peace in the flock very well.
The red ones, I’m not really sure honestly. They were an impulse buy because a raccoon got into my coop and I lost a lot of birds. I got them at a farm auction. They’re kinda skittish and would sell your soul for a slice of bread but I love them. Java and C# are their names.
I really recommend everyone get birds! They’re so sweet and I love them so much!

OOC// Meet the Chickens: Darcy
Tumblr media
Darcy is the most conventionally affectionate of all the chickens. She's a Blue-Laced Red Wyandotte. She a cuddle first ask questions later type of chicken which makes her survival more of a testament to how safe the Oak Garcia's have made their backyard. Despite her friendly nature, she has the weirdest way of phrasing things that can be a bit upsetting if you don't know she means them affectionately. If she's willing to eat your corpse upon your death it is a pledge of utmost affection. She's considered to belong to Henry, Mercedes, and Birdie equally, and if Birdie isn't sure how the chickens are going to react to you, Darcy is who she'll start you off with.

Here is the full list of all the names of my chickens I’ve had over the years. Take your pick.
Cohort the first (peep peep peep in the garage: Amber&Ember, fraternal twin chipmunk striped babies; Milly&Tilly, identical twins collectively known as The Matildas; Blue, a rare Blue Laced Red Wyandotte; Dakota, named for a girl my sibling had a squish on.
Not an official cohort, but honorary mention to some random ducks we acquired: Bits, Bobs, Babs, and Bub.
Cohort the second (happy birthday sibling, pick better names this time): Sage, Ginger, and Rosemary, the spiced girls
Cohort the third (our chickens look cold, let’s get them some new snuggle buddies): Coco-Butter, affectionately called Coco-Butt; Silver, because I liked the name so much I lied to my family that it was also a type of chocolate; Fanny May, like the chocolate company; Squirt, li’l runt that didn’t make it long enough for a name to stick
Cohort the fourth (Afro chickens!!! See polish chicken for reference): Ella Fitzgerald, Whitney Houston, and Phoebe Snow (later renamed to Rod Stewart, when it became apparent that their original name was not suitable for a himbo.) He was the sweetest cuddliest friendliest rooster ever. The girls are/were absolutely batshit. Ella seriously looks like she’s tripping balls and doing cocaine on the daily.
Cohort the fifth, Goddesses (are we seriously getting more chickens?): Brynhildr (actually the twins Brynn and Hilda), daughters of Oden and chiefs of the Valkyries; Freja, goddess of love and battle; Shala, Mesopotamian goddess of grain; Artemis, goddess of the hunt; Nyx, goddess of the night; Eostre, goddess of fertility (also a late addition. Also a duck.)
does anyone know any good names for a chicken?
Its for a project

More chicken rambling. Because the chickens are doing a hell of a lot more good for my mental health than the rabbits. I'd like to figure out breeding pens now.
First and foremost, I know that I need a pen of buff laced project birds. Which will either be one partridge cochin roo over both buff laced hens, two buff laced roos over two partridge hens, or ... I haven't figured out exactly what I want to do if I get a wyandotte hen and a roo.
I'll be culling out a LOT of partridge chicks at some point this year for toe feathering, which I think they're inheriting from my current partridge roo. Which means he needs to be culled out, too. I have one partridge cockerel that looks to have better feathering than his sire, but there aren't a whole lot of them overall despite the sheer number I've hatched out. That's probably going to be all that I can cull them for this year, however.
I want to put my current partridge hens under my black roo this year, too. I stupidly let them out with the main flock, which includes my bantam roos, so I might hatch out some weird ass things, too, for a minute. But if I can get some black split to partridge chicks with feathering and *soft tail feathers*, I would be ecstatic. So for next year, the partridge plan would actually be to breed THOSE chicks together. A trio or a quad, I dunno. I haven't even paired these chickens up to make these chicks yet.
I also have hatched zero blue things out of my blue laced red wyandotte hen this year, so I want to put her under a partridge roo next year again. Get more blue laced red cochin crosses. I do have a boy out of her with a single comb, so if I could keep a couple blue things with single combs, that would be great. But next year, she's just paired up all alone with a boy - hopefully a boy with better feathering than current roo.
I have a lot of silver laced cochins growing up right now out of my current pair of silver laced. These are even uglier typed than my partridge, so I might just keep a new pair based off of pattern. If I can keep a hen or two with better lacing than my current hen, I think I'll be happy enough. No point in crossing these over to the partridge for a start to gold laced until the partridge are up to snuff.
I just bought a handful of show stock blue cochins this weekend along with the buff laced wyandottes, so I'll put together a, uh, show pen, so to speak. Put my best typed birds together. If it's my current black roo, cool, but if not, that's fine. I have yet to hatch anything out of my barred hens (at least, I think so), so I'd like to put them under a separate black roo than the blues. My current blue hen will most likely be culled. She has stiff tail feathers, and since I just got a handful more blues, I don't need to deal with that.
I have ... splash? cochin chicks for a reason unbeknownst to me. I need to figure out where the fuck they came from, because the oldest of the splash has zero tail feathers so far, and it's growing up cute. Still. It's not genetically possible for me to get a splash out of my pens this year, so I have no idea where it - let alone the other two - came from. Based off of type, I'd say it came from my black roo, but ... he can't make splash. idfk. But like once I figure out what the fuck they are, I might incorporate them in a breeding trio or something with a black if I can. To ... further ... figure out what on earth is going on.
I also put speckled sussex under my black roo this year and have a fuckton of their babies. A lot of them, mottled. Soo I'll keep my chunkiest trio of sussex crosses with mottling and make a pen of those next year, too. I'm actually pleasantly surprised at how plump those are turning out so far. I'll be keeping partridge based babies out of that pen, and if I'm only breeding mottleds together, they'll all be mottled, so ... instant jubilee cochin. lol
I bought wheaten marans for a wheaten project, too. Those were supposed to be pullets and still look like pullets, so I need a partridge roo for them, too. Keep a trio or quad from them, breed out the pattern gene, and keep the wheaten colored chicks. Breed over to cochin type. Or ... maybe I'll use a black or blue roo instead, NOT worry about the pattern gene, and breed back down to wheaten anyway. That's probably a better idea.
On top of all that, I'm hoping that I can keep the shittier looking black or blue roos I hatched this year, hope they're out of either my splash mauve hen or chocolate orpington hen (this should hopefully be easy to assess from shank color? if I actually pay attention to that?), put them over a couple black (or blue) hens, and see if I can hatch out chocolate cochins. Because that's something that I've really, really wanted to do.
Speaking of - I got one black cochin chick along with the handful of blues ... and there's a possibility that it's split to lavender. So ... it'd be nice to keep THAT chick separate from everything else, too, mark its offspring, and breed a handful of its offspring back to see if I can hatch out lavender.
So ... that's enough projects, right?
buff laced
blue laced red
black split to partridge
silver laced
wheaten under black/blue
mottled black split for jubilee
black/blue split to chocolate
black possibly split to lav
splash to black
barred under black
any show typed blues if i have extras
And now I know how many pens that I need to put together. Heh. Dear oh my, my wife might kill me.
On top of large fowl cochin projects, I do still have my bantams. This year, I put my lavender under black mottled, and she made so many babies. So I'll keep a quad or quintet of those and keep the lavenders. I also have my pen of mauve things. I really need to watch out for my boys, because I had a mauve roo over black mottled hens ... and I don't know which black split to mottled roos are out of him versus the black split to lavender roos. Might keep a nice looking blue cockerel out of him and try to replace most everything in that mauve pen. I might put the mottled blacks back together for more show type birds. Might put them under my silver birchen because he's a cutie, possibly moreso than the birds actually from the show lines. But I don't want more than like three pens of bantams, because my focus is definitely going to the large fowl.
