Rec list part 2- Books and Music :)
Stuff i read and listened to in 2024!
Books
Again, I've not included content warnings here, you may want to look them up for these if you want to read any of them. That goes for the fiction and non fiction too. Also this list isn't spoiler free.
None of the Above - Travis Alabanza
Amazing auto-bio-y book about being non binary and growing up in London. Also I met Travis at the book launch and they gave me a cool pin. A really good read!!
Babel - RF Kuang
What if your magic system was based on the meanings lost through translation. What if that was heavily exploited by colonialism. Really cool book! My friend recommended this to me, and I really enjoyed it. It's a little depressing, but like.. it makes sense for it to be.
Our Wives Under the Sea - Julia Armfield.
Cool meditation on what it means to do palliative care for a loved one, and the complicated feelings about it. Pretty sad. It didnt have as many sea monsters as i was looking for, but it was still really good.
Working Guys - Jack Parker
An anthology written by trans masc(+enby) sex workers, covers alot of topics really thoughtfully, and it's a really informative read.
Deadendia vol 1 - Hamish Steele.
I love this series, now that I've read the first comic, I'll rewatch the show. The vibes are so good.
Music
Apashe
His whole new album slaps, I saw him live earlier in the year, with Waisu too, and it was just really great. They had an 8 piece brass band with them, who looked like they were having the time of their lives. The remixes he's bringing out are really cool too. Also i found out about monkey man cause Apashe was in the trailer lol.
Fav songs: Catch Me, Gasoline, anything from the Requiem EP
Kim Petras
Love her so much, my friend and I saw her this year and she put on such a good show. The costume changes were amazing, the dancers were fantastic and overall the energy was really good.
Favs: anything from Slut Pop
Femtanyl
I'm obsessed with her music, although I'm not really sure what genre she comes under. Something that ends with -core probably. So excited to see her tour next year 🙏
Fav song: Katamari (the whole chaser EP is great, or maybe M3 AND MIN3)
Bloodywood
Love them, such good music too get angry to. If you like metal but want to hear something really new, and wanna hear people singing about abolishing the caste system, and punching rapists then they are the band for you maybe.
Favs: Dana-Dan, Aaj
Megan Thee Stallion
Her album this year was so good?? And I've not seen it in any best albums of this year lists???? This is a crime???
Favs: BOA, Cobra, Her
Tanerélle
Every year she's on my spotify wrapped, and every year she deserves it!!! Her vice is so soulful and gorgeous.
Favs: Boys Like You, Won't, No One Else
Honourable mentions:
Bambie Thug - Egregore
Zamilska - Fuck Fray, Hospital, Front, Dual 35
Horsegiirl - My Barn, My Rules
Shygirl - Encore
Luede - Gay Power
Heilung - Alfadhirhaiti
Wardruna - Himinndotter, grá
Irrepressibles - Most Beautiful Boy in the World, In this Shirt
Nine Inch Nails
Health
#rec list#music recs#music 2024#book recs#end of year 2024#for the music i picked my favs#not just what spotify wrapped picked#fuck algorithms#if you see this and want to do the same#you should do it#end of year favs :)

hoihoi !! i lovelovelove ice nine kills but i need to like expand my horizons lmao can you gimme song recs from other metal people
HELLOOOOO oh my god i absolutely can, you’ve unlocked the autism ramble of all time :] I’m probably going to bounce all over the place when it comes to metal sub genres but hopefully that gives you more room to find some guys you like! Sorry for the long post in advance but I cannot be helped
In This Moment is one of my all time favourite metal bands, and since they have toured with ice nine (and have a collab song!!!) it might be fun to start there! Some of my faves from them include Blood, Adrenalize, Whore, Natural Born Sinner, Dirty Pretty, and Sex Metal Barbie
Then The Devil Wears Prada is a bit more modern metalcore, so their songs can run lighter, but ever since I heard Sacrifice I have been OBSESSED with them. Their latest album is all really good, but standouts to me include Cancer, Salt, and Exhibitor. Chemicals is an earlier song of theirs, but also a really fucking good one
Sleep Token!! Oh my god sleep token. I would honestly recommend their whole discography to you if I could, but some overall faves are Vore, High Water, Distraction, Ascensionism, The Night Does Not Belong To God, Nazareth, and Granite
The Plot In You’s entire Swan Song album is another fucking banger, with standout songs for me being Face Me, Paradigm, and Enemy. Divide, Forgotten, and Closure are also huge faves
Wage War! I got to see them live and it was life changing. Grave is definitely one of their lighter songs overall, but Manic, Godspeed, and Hellbent are also top notch
Motionless in White are also really close to INK - both in that they toured together, and also because one of MIW’s guitarists used to work with INK! I love their entire disguise album (Another Life and Brand New Numb my beloveds), but I also enjoy Reincarnate, Cyberhex, Cause of Death, and Not My Type: Dead as Fuck 2
Bad Omens! Bad omens. There’s not much I can say about them other than they are peak - their entire DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND album is musical genius and a no-skip all around for me. Out of their older music, I also enjoy Never Know, Exit Wounds, Limits, and Burning Out
Architects. Black Lungs, Seeing Red, Giving Blood, and Curse are all really good - they have some fun political themes in their music
IMMINENCE. They make me cry. Frequently. They have no right to be so emotional and heavy at the same time. Absolutely love Infectious, Erase, The Black, Proclaim, Those Who Seek, Come What May, Surrender, and Allieviate
Spiritbox is a band I’m more recently getting into, but MAN are they so damn good. Holy Roller, Sunkiller, Rotoscope, and Angel Eyes are all favourites - Too Close / Too Late is also really good
Slipknot is definitely a more household name, but if you haven’t heard much of them: Custer, Vermillion, Unsainted, People = Shit, Spit it Out and (sic)
Also pretty well known is Bring Me The Horizon - I’ve been really in love with Kool-Aid lately, die4u is an all time fave, and Parasite Eve, 1x1, in the dark, True Friends, Doomed, and Antivist are all up there
Going a bit (a Lot) heavier: Lorna Shore. Musical geniuses. I’ve never heard a man do guttural vocals the way Will Ramos does. Their entire Pain Remains album is SOOOO good (in particular, Sun//Eater and Pain Remains I), but To the Hellfire and Of the Abyss are also life changing
In the same vein as Lorna Shore, Angelmaker. God the things I could say about Angelmaker. Leech is an allll time fave from them, but In Death, Godless, and Dissientient are up there too
Some other faves that aren’t really attached to one band: Jinnslammer by Ignea, Condemned by Stain The Canvas, The End Of All We Know by Bleed From Within, There’s Fear In Letting Go by I Prevail, Insanely Illegal Cage Fight by Dal Av, Ketamine by Fame on Fire, Felt Like Home and On The Inside by As Everything Unfolds, Darkbloom by We Came As Romans, Gaddaar by Bloodywood (anythint by Bloodywood tbh, they’re an underrated gem doing Bollywood-metal fusion), absolutely anything by Dangerkids, on the verge by thrown, Vermin by Carcosa, Pretty In Pink by Scene Queen, お先に失礼します。by Hanabie, Layers of Time by Lacuna Coil, House of Cards by Deadlands, We Got The Moves by Electric Callboy and Fading Away by From Fall To Spring
#I also really love Leander Kills but they’re a bit of a soft spot for me right now so there’s not much I can say in their favour#also from word of mouth support I feel good recommending:#currents / carnifex / kublai kahn tx / oxxymorons#**oxymorrons#I think that’s about it for now!!!! I hope you can find a band here that clicks with you <3333#thank you so very much for letting me unleash the autism monster. I absolutely love metal and get so hyped to talk about it#also if you have Instagram! sempermetallum is a really good place to get your finger on the pulse of metal. lots of release updates#and news about what’s new in metal#AUGH I FORGOT ABOUT TALLAH TOO. FUCKING LOVE TALLAH#asks

God the jurta that Karan, the guitarist of Bloodywood, wears for gigs is the coolest thing ever
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/6e2200ec09afda6882c0e51c90cea339/097008f4624b3a74-4f/s540x810/166366ee8a108175bee4585e987de92e8b2b15a8.jpg)
I want one of these so bad but like, it would look awful on me and I don't know if that would be an appropriation thing yknow.
Anyway I've just finished watching the documentaries they made for both their first tour and their new album announcement and the obsession is back

i'm juuust getting into metal, can you recommend two bands or even just albums in the broader genre which are as different in sound as possible
my friend i can recommend you so many bands... i'll list my favorites/honorable mentions, with my favorite things from them.
but if I had to pick two, it'd be Nothing More (albums: SPIRITS and The Few Not Fleeting) and Sleep Token (albums: Take Me To Eden and Sundowning)... gonna put the full list under the cut
Atena - EP: Hard Day Aurora View - Song: Honey Oil, EP: SHMR Beartooth - Albums: All of them tbh, plus coming release Bloodywood - Songs: Gadaar, Machi-Basad, Dana-dan Breaking Benjamin - Albums: Saturate, Ember, Dear Agony Bring Me The Horizon - Albums: Sempiternal, Count Your Blessings, There is a Hell Believe Me I've Seen it Citizen Soldier - Albums: This Is Your Sign I & II, coming release Death Tour - Albums: Blood Pact Fever 333 - Songs: $wing, Soul'd Me Out, Made an America Flyleaf - Albums: Flyleaf, Memento Mori Ghostemane - Albums: ANTI-ICON, Hexada, N / O / I / S / E In This Moment - Albums: Black Widow, Ritual Kim Dracula - Just makes real weird songs and it's cool. Linkin Park - Albums: Hybrid Theory, Minutes to Midnight Mallavora - Songs: Disorder, Eternal, Origins Nothing More - Albums: SPIRITS, The Few Not Fleeting Scarlxrd - Albums: Dxxm & Dxxm II Sick Puppies - Albums: All of them. period. Skillet - Albums: Rise, Awake Skindred - Songs: Kill the Power, Ratrace, Stand for Something Sleep Token - Albums: Take Me Back to Eden, Sundowning Spiritbox - Albums: Eternal Blue, Songs: Jaded, Circle With Me Tetrarch - Albums: Unstable
most of these bands combine a lot of genres and have changed genre over time, but all of them have metal subgenres in them

you mentioned playlists in your pinned post so now I am here to haunt you! what kind of playlists do you think you'd enjoy? what're some of your favorite music artists and/or genres? :0
oh man i listen to SO MUCH music just all sorts......... except........... what i have dubbed "white girl pop" lmao, which ends up being a lot of the more popular music across tumblr with generally white generally femmes in the age bracket just below mine (i'm so sorry younger sibling who is a really big swiftie i Do Not understand and i also dont care to)
for context, the music i got into on my own back in the day in highschool (circa 2003-2009) was primarily west coast punk or pop punk, but i also listened to a LOT of non english music (i think at the height of it i had music in over 20 different languages that would just pop up on playlists willy nilly)
shortly after that, i spent several years as a raver listening to a lot of edm, specifically happy hardcore, though i also had a soft spot for euro dance (i am OBSESSED with planet of the bass). d&b and dubstep were... fine but i didn't really seek them out with the exception of some specific tracks that had overlap with hardcore (seattle was BIG on hardcore/happy hardcore in the years around 2010 when i was a raver)
currently, my spotify has a real big habit of reccing me Black punk or indie punk artists, which i am definitely not mad about even if i'm also vaguely baffled at how i've gotten here. last show i went to WAS Black indie punk tho (meet me @ the altar; SO GOOD i lov them). we WERE suppose to go see bloodywood (indian metal) for my wifes bday but... shenanigans ensued with the bus. before mm@a, last show wasssss i think FOB and greenday's hella mega tour (baller, and free lmao), and then before that i saw caravan palace, and before that was mystery skulls. if i can get my surgery scheduled soon enough i REALLY wanna try and see ashinekko in october cos im mad that im missed out on poppy this month (it was the 18th ;n;)
basically all of those bands are wildly different genres lmao
as for bands, a non exhaustive list would be: mcr, p@td, offspring, muse, nicki minaj, hozier, rise against, pansy division, system of a down, skatune network, mother mother, I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME, marina, mothica, lil nas x, subwoolfer, FEMM, and many more
a short selection of Top Songs
that is so many songs dang. most of them come from my ashton playlist because that is what i have been listening to most recently and that playlist is ten hours long so
but ye i lov music i am chill with about any rec, especially if you can paint a picture as to why i should like it (fandom related???? good story vibes???? actually singable for a baritone?????)
key things i tend to look for is: a lot of bass (not specifically always *driving* bass, just a lot of it), vocals that go up and down scales (especially if theyre "bouncy" and scale well to deeper voices), and fun lyrics (especially horny or murder). the MOST important thing is that bass element, which is the big reason why i dont like a lot of "white girl pop"
rec away!!
#mochi rambles#mochi asks#dragonknuckles#mochi music#i guess????#like this chunk of music is all very similar in vibes because its basically all off the same playlist#i just dont wanna yeet out TOO MUCH music this post is already very long#but i definitely do have like#a real interesting spotify wrap each year#and when i was actively using itunes#i had god i think at least five gigs of music probably significantly more#like last time i ported everything into itunes it took a solid 30 hours#but the cpu on that tower died back in 2015 so i haven't looked at it since then#thus idk for sure#and i can defintely tell you that i have increased the music i like by A LOT#so#ya kno#2 many options#but if anyone wants me to throw down a song for x specific character or ship or whatever i probably have one lmao
