The Drums

“Blood Under My Belt”

A band’s lineup, and what consists of a Band, is what you make of it. Personally, it means a lot to see consistency (personnel wise) in the bands I love, as in I enjoy seeing the same members involved in the band (I still subscribe to the old-school “gang mentality” when it comes to how bands operate). It can be tough to view a group that you’ve gotten used to over the years shed members, especially key members or the core of said project. For me, it can be a touchy thing, as I’m one who firmly believes: No Rourke & Joyce, No The Smiths (or when The Shins simply went back to being just creator James Mercer’s project) because it just wouldn’t have the same feel without these individuals.

With that being said, The Drums are back with a new single, “Blood Under My Belt” in the lead up to their latest LP ‘Abysmal Thoughts’. I use their hesitantly because The Drums now consist solely of founding member and frontman Jonathan Pierce (as co-founder Jacob Graham left the group after 2014′s ‘Encyclopedia’ LP).

Those longing for the surf-pop Drums of old, are in luck, for “Blood Under My Belt” bristles with the guitar based Indie Pop the band perfected in their early years. They’ve slowly dialed back this sound with each subsequent release, but have fully re-embraced the vibes here as Pierce (who plays every instrument on the forthcoming album) opens with a familiar guitar riff before allowing the main groove to ride a wave over skittish percussion.

The Drums, like all great indie guitar groups, are masters of masking depressing odes around a cheery instrumental and “Blood” is no different. Pierce sounds like Pierce, which is a good thing, as the track really does recall the group we all fell in love with and that summer is just around the corner.

The Drums (newly signed to ANTI- Records) have lost me over the years, which is no fault of their own and more of a changing in taste, but I always enjoy a great Drums single and “Blood Under My Belt” satiates the need.
