Also, a little trivia for you...swipe left for more Kindred fun facts! This series is based on the highly acclaimed 1979 novel, also titled Kindred, by Octavia E. Butler. The novel is usually classified as science fiction, though Butler herself (in a 1991 interview with Randall Kenan in the journal Callaloo) characterized the book as fantasy rather than science fiction: "Kindred is fantasy. I mean literally, it is fantasy. There's no science in Kindred. I mean, if I was told that something was science fiction I would expect to find something dealing with science in it. For instance, Wild Seed [a later novel by Butler] is more science fiction than most people realize. The main character is dealing with medical science, but she just doesn't know how to talk about it. With Kindred there's absolutely no science involved. Not even the time travel. I don't use a time machine or anything like that. Time travel is just a device for getting the character back to confront where she came from." Hello!

My name is Rita and I am an aspiring author and my goal for this year is to finally finish my draft for my first book in my Creation of Magic universe. Here are my aspirations/manifestations and a bit on how I will be achieving them.

Firstly, i want to track my progress, frustrations and everything I’ve been doing for this novel via social media. Tumblr is my first and best pick because it already has the audience I’m looking for. Hopefully, I’ll be able to expand to other platforms before I start promoting my book. If you stumble across my blog give me a follow to encourage this series! I am also a small artist as well and will occasionally create art for my characters, particular scenes, etc., for my series. Overall, I am very excited to use this platform to push my passion project and hopefully become the fantasy author I strive to see.

Secondly, I am a college student! Currently in my last semester in school and will be starting grad school soon so updates will be sporadic but I hope to follow through with them. Outside of my main series, I am also an experienced fan fiction author and I hope to get back into that hobby as well—or at least use the skills I learned there to apply it here.

I know this is a huge goal, most people don’t make it big in the writing industry and that especially so for minorities, people of color, and queer stories. However, I have seen so much success recently with this community that I would be distraught if I did not try to push myself towards something greater. I cannot wait to show you all what I have to offer and hopefully, you love them as much as I do.
