#7 Maternal mistreatment is an issue affecting millions of Canadians. It is a concept that has been embedded within society throughout history (Dryden and Nnorom, 2021). In the TikTok above, user Sandra Igwe discusses her personal experience with mistreatment from healthcare professionals. What was supposed to be a 24-hour stay, turned into almost a full week of enduring medical discrimination. Sandra says that during her time at the hospital, staff refused to give necessary medical care to ensure the safe delivery of her child. The lack of treatment resulted in Sandra developing an infection. Along with this, Sandra also talks about the blatant racist remarks and treatment of patients. She said she experienced verbal abuse - something that never occurred to any of the expecting mothers who were white.

This is just one example of millions where racist ideology influences medical care for people of colour. Patients must go through physical, verbal, and emotional abuse just to receive the same medical treatment as others (Vedam et al, 2019). As a result, many people of colour stay away from walk-in clinics, hospitals, and other medical institutions in order to avoid this form of discrimination.
