YOB & Voivod Live Preview: 3/27, Thalia Hall, Chicago
Voivod at the Juno Awards 2019 – Photo by Julia Pittman / Sony Music Canada
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Here at SILY, we’ve covered Eugene, Oregan doom metal band YOB plenty and will recommend their live shows to the end of time. Their latest album Our Raw Heart was an emotional masterpiece and one of our favorite records of last year. The band just released an Amoeba Green Room session where they perform Heart’s title track and a couple The Great Cessation standouts. They’re an amazing band.
But this time around, it’s Canadian thrash metal titans Voivod, whose latest album The Wake just won a 2019 Juno Award for Metal/Hard Music Album, for whom we’d be most excited if we were going to this show. The Wake is, yes, a prog metal concept album, and it has its “of course” moments. Opener “Obsolete Beings” is about a society obsessed with--you guessed it--technology and phones. But on every track, including the most cliche ones, Voivod’s instrumental mastery takes over, the band’s tempo changes and complex time signatures acting as transitions between moments of pure ripping riffs. The distorted bass on “Orb Confusion” effectively drives the chugging imagining of post-apocalyptic chaos. “Always Moving” features syncopated distortion in between fast-picking thrash sections. (Some measures are in 15/4, because why not.) Closer “Sonic Mycelium” is a whirlwind mix of psychedelic, thrash, and prog. And even some moments of narrative are rewarding. The unexpectedly moving “Spherical Perspective” is delivered from the point of view of someone contemplating suicide, while “The End of Dormancy”, on the other end of the mood spectrum, describes an enemy from outer space, rendering the band’s militaristic instrumentals more welcome than they would be otherwise.
Voivod co-headlines with YOB tonight, and the band’s contrasting paces should make for a great double bill. While if recent setlists are an indication you shouldn’t expect Voivod to play any of their previous record, 2013′s great Target Earth, they should perform most of The Wake and material from their at this point legendary discography.
Belgian metal band Amenra opens.

AMENRA SHARE THE SORROWFUL NEW VIDEO FOR "A SOLITARY REIGN",
TAKEN FROM THEIR RECENT ALBUM MASS VI (OUT NOW FROM NEUROT RECORDINGS)
(photo credit: Stephan Vanfleteren, hi res available)
“…AMENRA push the boundaries of extreme music by being heavy in practically every conceivable way; sonically, emotionally and spiritually.” - The Independent
"Mass VI is a work that will leave you empty; it’s cathartic and draining and you’re left feeling hollow, as though Amenra have looked deep inside you and excised your own exquisite desolation." - The Quietus
"the deepest, finest record Belgium’s apocalyptic and meditative Amenrahave yet produced. Painfully intimate, achingly beautiful and excoriatingly heavy, Mass VI is a complete masterpiece." - Echoes & Dust
"...not only their best record, but most probably the best one of 2017…” - CVLT Nation
“…an appropriately stakes-raising effort, interweaving hypnotic, textured elegance and bracing, race-against-the-dying-of-the-light heaviness without ever sacrificing the sense that something profound and transcendent is going down.” - Decibel
"'Mass VI' is too powerful to be taken for granted" - Brooklyn Vegan
"Crescendos are built up only to be brought down. And it is this ability of their weighty and morose post metal to make one think as well as connect to the ‘other’ that truly makes this album worth a listen." - Transcending Obscurity
"...an emotional album that tackles the human experience with a thick overtone of distress.” - Exclaim!
"Amenra may be dark, but they are also darkly triumphant.” - Revolver
AMENRA share the moving new video for "A Solitary Reign" across the Noisey network, a song which many have identified as a highlight from their recent album, Mass VI (Neurot Recordings). "A Solitary Reign" premiered on Noisey in multiple territories including the Netherlands, UK, Brazil, Italy, Austria/Switzerland, Germany, and United States.
Here's some background about the video from AMENRA vocalist Colin H. Van Eeckhout: "'A Solitary Reign' needed to portray the universal nature of our music and message. The abstraction of man and woman to separate deities. The return to its animal-esque essence and cravings. It is an Ode to the Mother. Made by a Mother. A procession to celebrate its beauty."
He continues..."The song was written to honor the passing of our drummer, Bjorn Lebon' s mother. Before writing and recording we knew we wanted to honor our mothers on the next album. We wanted to get each one of them in the studio to interview them, ask them about life, love, motherhood, their sons, getting older, death and pain, so we could possibly take some of these words with us, into the next album. We ran out of time, and the only one we were able to interview was Paulette, Bjorn's mom. She talked about him, about almost losing him, about life's joy and pain. It was a beautiful moment for all of us. We stowed our plans for later, and little did we know that a month later she got diagnosed with Cancer. The strong woman died a few months later. Partially written, the song had a prophetic nature. It is the song that brought us together, in that moment, that phonecall. We knew time had come to come together, and write that album, that became Mass VI."
"The video was made by Tine Guns, the mother of our guitar player Mathieu Vandekerckhove's son, Wolf. She is an amazing photographer, director and video artist. She knows AMENRA better than anyone, and was able to capture all the emotion and weight of the moment in moving image. I am proud to say that all the people responsible for this movie are my close friends, and I could not have wished for better companions to accomplish this hard task."
