"EUROPEANS ATE GROUND-UP EGYPTIAN MUMMIES!!!! ALL THE TIME!!!"
sounds much more dramatic than
"Europeans sometimes consumed ground-up Egyptian mummies, or fluid found inside the chest cavities of mummies, or a type of tree resin that became associated with mummies because it kind of looked like the bitumen used in the embalming process, or the dried and ground flesh of very specific European dead- most likely a bit of all of the above at various times in various places. but it's hard to say what the proportion of each was- and at least one early Middle Eastern physician, Abd al-Latif al-Baghdadi from modern-day Iran, also advised the use of the Body Cavity Liquid variety hundreds of years before the first documented use of mummy by Europeans. so it was a medicinal thing in the areas from whence the mummies came, too. unsurprising seeing as a lot of cultures- including Europeans -have done Corpse Medicine with their own people for centuries. there was also been pushback against the medicinal use of mummies in Europe since at least the 16th century; it remains unclear how popular the notion was at any given time. so the answer to Is This A Good Symbol For The Effects of European Colonialism In Egypt remains a resounding 'ehhh...?'"
"because the whole idea is, is it not, that Europeans were literally consuming the dead bodies of a non-European people who would have had no reason to sell their dead without a European market. and that's kind of true! there was a market that created a demand! but they were also already putting the bodies to these uses closer to home before Europeans started, because this whole thing began with both Arab and European doctors misinterpreting other Arab doctors who were talking about the medicinal qualities of tree resin. so really it's not as simple a situation as we might like to believe."
"and Mummy Brown paint is like this whole other situation where it was supposed to be made from ground-up mummies but often wasn't because Cost-Cutting, and a lot of artists didn't really like it anyway, and others used it thinking the name only referred to the color, and one time Edward Burne-Jones attempted an Egyptian funeral for a tube of Mummy Brown paint because he was so horrified with the origins, so while that's a more straightforward as an Oh Shit Violent Colonialism situation, people merrily waltzing into shops and buying one tube of Dead Egyptian Person, please, my good man! wasn't quite as widespread as one might now think"
"for me, the more compelling image of Europe Fucking Egypt Over is that of a white archaeologist peering curiously into a pit where Egyptian people are working tirelessly to excavate a tomb, their names to be lost to history in favor of whatever rich white person they toiled for. even that image is not without complicating factors- I, imagining it, am a white woman who cannot ask those Egyptian men what they think and feel about all their role in all this -but to me it seems more reliable than the VERY complex and often misinterpreted history of the mummy trade, even as I understand it after like an hour of research"
"on the OTHER HAND, does it even matter if people in the Middle East were already doing mummy medicine, when Europeans increased demand? does it even matter if Europeans felt bad or at least grossed out about Mummy Brown paint or if it wasn't ~always~ real mummies? maybe it doesn't! maybe my instincts as a history worker to say It's More Complicated are clouding my judgment on the nature of colonialism! or maybe they aren't! or maybe different people will think I'm right or think I'm full of shit and that's just the nature of doing public history on The Tungles!"
"anyway I have COVID and should probably go to bed now"
"this article and the Wiki page for Mummia are very well-sourced"

ATTENTION ARTISTS!!
I have been going down an art history hyperfixiation at the moment, so I’m going to make it all of you lovely people’s problem.
I have an art challenge for you! Throughout history, there have been multiple famous painters that use ‘limited palettes’, which are palettes that only have a few specific colors and nothing else. This would add a level of challenge while also making their art distinct.
In this event, you must use a different color palette used by famous painters for 7 days.
RULES
You can do this digitally or traditionally
ONLY THE PALETTE OF THE DAY, NO OTHER COLORS.
You dont have to use every color listed in the designated palette, because some of them are VERY long.
Some of the colors (i.e: vermillion, cadmium, lead) are actually TOXIC paints. DO NOT USE THE ACTUAL TOXIC PAINT. This is for your safety; please use the shades similar to it.
Make sure to use the tag #limitedpaletteweek so I can see :D
Have fun!
Day 1: Anders Zorn
Ochor Yellow, Ivory Black, Titanium White and Vermillion
Day 2: Paul Gaugin
Prussian blue, Cobalt blue, Emerald green, Viridian, Cadmium yellow, Chrome yellow, Red ochre, Cobalt violet, Lead white, Zinc white
Day 3: Rembrant
Lead white, Bone black, Ochre, Sienna, Umber.
Day 4: Fredric Remington
Prussian Blue, Bone Black, Flake White, Vermillion, Cad Red, Cad Yellow, Chromium Yellow, Chromium Orange, Emerald Green, Chromium Oxide Green, Hooker’s Green
Day 5: Emile Grupe

Guess what character I’m attempting to cosplay? It’s a certain malevolent Jester we all love to hate.
Ewww that second one lol
TRUST THE PROCESS. I used construction paper instead of newspaper for the mask. This mask is a trial and error thing (unless it comes out splendid, then I’ll use it instead)
For some Venetian masks, they use some sort of charcoal oil called Bitumen to “age” the mask. I assume it’s what cracks the paint to give it a “cracked marble” look (idk the terms, man) so imma try this water oil mixture thing to see if it works the same way as bitumen (probably not. Im going in blind. Wish me luck)

Who wants to see a bit of art that I did for Death Shall Come on Swift Wings by @lennjamin-o7 ???
Too bad so sad you're seeing it anyways!
Listen, Lenn said that the type of clothes that Philza would be wearing would be Mesopotamian. You think I'm not going to jump on that?? I so am. Also, the jewelry is beautiful, I'm very tempted to make some in that style (even if I'd never wear it)
Let me link the fic here before I ramble too much: https://archiveofourown.org/works/50266048/chapters/126974530
I can't sing the praises of this fic enough. It's got language barriers, I love that shit, and the way Lenn formats it--oh my GOD please read it!
Ok, so, more details on the art and process if anyone wants them, as well as the scribble sheet I was taking notes on.
So most of my reference for the jewelry came from pictures of artifacts from the royal tomb of Ur and Queen Pu-abi's jewelry. I would KILL to see the artifacts in situ but oh well.
This is my scribble sheet. Highlights include complaining about the article saying that the only reason jewelry was found in men's graves and daggers found in women's graves were bribes for the gods of the afterworld, and a mild breakdown once I found out what bitumen was. My brother suffered through extended rants on both but he deserved it.
Some notes:
-Lenn says that Phil was a god of Magic (simplified explanation ngl) and the Sumerians were obsessed with Lapis Lazuli. Maybe that's why Lapis is used in enchanting, Phil was obsessed with the stuff. If we're assuming Minecraft Enchanting rules in this setting.
-Sumer is actually where we get the measurement of time from! They were the ones who liked the number 60, and 24, and all that. I noticed that there was repetition of 12 and 8 in the jewelry I saw, especially with Pu-abi's choker and the 8-point rosette. If I had made Phil wear Pu-abi's choker, it would have been an 8-point star/flower...both for simplicity and also because I think the love of 12 as a base may not have been used so much as 8. I could go on and on and on, but I'll stop there
-Carnelian, Lapis, and gold were the most common material used in jewelry, so I went with Phil having predominantly Lapis and Gold, with a little carnelian mixed in. If I were to make a version of this with Techno, he'd have predominantly carnelian. If I cared more about the symbolism of stones I'd go look that up but I also know I'd start looking like a conspiracy theorists if I do that
-Philza's clothing and jewelry are very understated; I figured this would be what he would wear when he was more relaxed and just chilling, and so potentially what outfit he got trapped in for thousands of years.
-I was thinking about adding beaded strings draping over his wings, but if this is meant to be a chill-time outfit, he probably wouldn't deal with that. Or he took them off before going to destroy the world, I imagine they'd get tangled the hell up
-I wonder if the people who trapped him stole all the jewelry around the palace. I wonder if they ended up in museums...though Phil would probably just take them back and nobody would really protest. But imagine if he DID humor the curators of the museum even a little
-the jewelry was done with acrylics, including metallic for the gold, and the rest was watercolor
-I'm probably going to experiment with metallic paint for the feathers, but that's not right now.
Anyways, that's it!
#philza minecraft#philza#death shall come on swift wings to him who disturbs the peace of the king#I'm also going to throw the art in Lenn's askbox like a cat dropping off a dead bird#I had maybe too much fun with this#Sohr's Art

A Poem, A Friend Shep-en-Mut "The painted wooden face was known to me. She stood in the dusty museum sun, Painted eyes lengthened with kohl. Azure, terra-cotta, white, Emblazoned cartonnage. The Isis wings, spread in care and love. Curving protective Neckbet and Nepthys. Beneath, the corticated skin, Black bitumen. Eyeless, cracked and black, Dessicated viscera, wrapped apart. Leaving child and husband, moving through satin bands of shadow, Singing in the ecstatic sun. Feet hissing through the silken sand She carried the Milk Jar and a Palm frond, Worshipping and serving each day. This lady was the songstress of Amun-Re, Her songs curved upward in the great Temple of Thebes. The stone beauty of the face of the God above her frailty Gave her voice a scope of praise denied to our dessicated senses When death stooped on her, claws and beak ripped. Then feathers lay outstretched in love. Horus wings, Night Heron beak, Having slain, now standing guard in fearful phalanx. Leaving the echo between the roof trees. Her flesh must be pickled, cured with cinnamon and myrrh. The skull, frail as a blown egg, Emptied of its convolute majesty, Stuffed with delicate resinous rags. When the sucking natron has had its meal Her shell will taste the shriving sun and wind once more. Blow gently, shine kindly down, Amun-Re, on thy slave. She shall be wrapped in fine linen Layer on layer, and laced like a shoe. The last we shall see in linen and plaster and paint. May her journey be safe through the dark tunnels May her soul sing in light before her God, In soft peace. The holding wings enfold my friend. Priestess of Thebes. Singer of Amun-Re Bearer of the little Milk Jar." - Elizabeth Sigmund

This photo from the Formula 1 mood board, with the girl in stockings in the back seat makes me think that Kate might have given Anthony a sexy surprise when they got together.
Anthony has received many sexy surprises from Kate. He's also given her a few sexy surprises.
He's been known to wait for Kate to come home from work, posed like a renaissance painting completely naked, combing his little moustache.
"Can I interest you in a little... moustache ride this evening?"
And Kate just groans, "Why is this... working though?"
Anthony grinned, sighing dramatically, "I'm handsome, and I drive very fast cars for a living and I have this sexy moustache. Do I need to go on?"
"No, roll over so I can take my ride now please."
But honestly, Kate works out very early in their relationship that it's very easy to get Anthony to take his pits and change his tyres when the team wants them. Get his brakes cleaned and his wings adjusted.
All she needs is a pair of stockings and the seat of his car.
"Do I... actually want to know how you managed that?" Edmund sighed as Anthony sped into pit lane when Kate sighed, "Time for a tyre change Ant, your rear right is wearing unevenly."
The wheels hit the bitumen and Anthony sped off again hooting through the radio 2.4 seconds!! Let's Go!!
"I don't think you do." Kate sighed,
"Can I have the stockings with the dart up the back this time, please?! I even let them clean my brakes!" Anthony called through the radio.
"No, I really didn't need to know that." Edmund groaned.

Umbria.
Just the shadow of its past, saved and damned by the rain which flooded the world.
A piece of land hidden, covered by the shadows of its always-green mountains, where the great paladin Orlando decided to lay down for the last time.
The obscurity of my origins still makes me a bit of weird out; the uncertainty of my true self, the vague ideas and the hours spent thinking about who am I.
Somehow I ended up here, between mountains' blood running over our little valleys - the creeks - and the tombs of our ancestors, who are still reading how the bird are flying in the sky upon them.
There is something holy in these dusty old medieval towns, where saints and ancient priests went to - with their bare feet - village by village, town by town, countryside by countryside, seducing torment and tired people to embrace some enlighten God.
Lights that shine upon the ruins of the last domus - with their black and white mosaics -, over the tomb of the ancient foreign King and over the little pottery shops.
I still don't know the faces and the dialects of the majority of my people, living too far, in other mountains and valley, where roads are badly made and at least made by bitumen.
We had some rail transport, but most of them was destroyed during WW2 and never rebuilt.
...
Maybe in my blood this unusual marriage - holiness and darkness - is what makes me who I am. The union between spirituality - regardless Christianity or our Ancient Gods - and an obscure nature, made by myths, legends, heroes, monsters, hidden far away, between the woods of our mountains, spying on us and be seeing back by us.
Maybe I am just a girl painted on a Maiolica plateau surrounded by creatures of the forest and my imagination and by holy figures in a realistic colourful scenario of my countryside, with my hometown in the background.

Application of different bitumen in road construction!
Although bitumen sounds very technical, we usually refer to it as asphalt. However, bitumen coating for concrete is frequently utilized for covering roadways in addition to offering a waterproofing option. The many types of bitumen coating used in road building are highlighted here.
Cutback bitumen: Bitumen is typically heated to decrease viscosity. In some circumstances, liquid binders like cutback bitumen are preferred. To reduce the bitumen's viscosity in cutback bitumen, an appropriate solvent is needed. For constructing and maintaining bituminous roads in cold weather, cutback bitumen is employed. Cutback bitumen comes in a variety of forms, including rapid curing (RC), medium curing (MC), and delayed curing (SC).
Bitumen emulsion: Bitumen is suspended in a finely split state in an aqueous medium and stabilized by appropriate material to create a liquid product known as a bitumen emulsion. The emulsion contains around 60% bitumen and the rest is water. When the emulsion is placed on the road, it degrades, releasing water as the mixture begins to set. The bitumen grade affects how long it takes to set. There are three different kinds of bituminous emulsions: Rapid setting (RS), Medium setting (MS), and Slow setting (SC).
Bituminous primers: The distillate in bitumen primer is absorbed by the road surface on which it is applied. As a result, the surface's porosity affects the absorption. On stabilized sur and water-bound macadam base courses, bitumen primers are helpful. On road construction sites, bituminous primers are often made by combining petroleum distillate with penetration bitumen.
Modified bitumen: The characteristics of bitumen and bituminous mixtures can be enhanced by specific additions or a combination of additives referred to as bitumen modifiers. Modified bitumen is bitumen that has been treated with various modifiers. Based on the demands of extreme climate fluctuations, polymer-modified bitumen (PMB) or crumb rubber-modified bitumen (CRMB) should only be used in the wearing course. It should be highlighted at tight temperature control during construction is essential for the operation of PMB and CRMB. The following are some benefits of utilizing modified bitumen.
Less prone to daily and seasonal temperature fluctuations
Increased resistance to deformation when the pavement is high
Improved aging resistance qualities
Greater mix fatigue life
Improved bonding between the aggregates and the binder
Avoiding reflective and cracked cracking
The mix type and structure have an impact on the bitumen's desired qualities. The following qualities are often desired in bitumen.
The bitumen shouldn't be very sensitive to temperature changes; it shouldn't melt or become unstable in the hottest weather, and it shouldn't fracture in the coldest weather if it gets too brittle.
When combining and compacting, the bitumen's viscosity should be sufficient. This can be accomplished by heating the bitumen and aggregates before mixing, using cutbacks or emulsions of acceptable grades, or both.
The bitumen and aggregates used in the mix should have sufficient affinity and adhesion
The best bitumen paint and other materials for the construction industry are offered by Bituroll. We have a long history of creating a variety of adaptable, environmentally safe, specialist waterproofing materials for different uses.

Hannah grafts a new plum variety onto her existing plum tree to double her fruit production.
Hannah’s Greengage plum tree is an old favorite. It’s a cultivar which produces medium sized green fruit that is rich, sweet and tasty. However, this tree is not producing as well as it could. They can be prolific producers after only a few years and are partially self-fertile which means that the flowers on one tree can cross-pollinate with each other to produce fruit. Self-pollination is not always reliable, so Hannah is introducing a pollination companion.
The Golden Drop plum has similar fruit, they’re a bit larger with a more balanced flavour. Rather than clearing a new space for another tree, she’s grafting this variety onto the Greengage tree. The small branch cuttings of the Golden Drop are called scion wood, and these will be fixed onto the existing plant which is called the rootstock. Grafting is a technique where two different types of plants are merged to grow as one. Growing Greengage and Golden Drop plums on the same tree is not only space savvy, but also time efficient because scion wood will begin fruit production earlier than a new baby tree.
Take scion cuttings in deep winter when the tree is completely dormant. You can store them in the fridge until late winter or early spring, which will be the best time to do the grafting process. Under the surface of the bark is a thin green layer called the cambium, this is where all active growth occurs and where the plant will produce new cells to join the two pieces of wood together. On either side of the cambium layer are the xylem and the phloem which transport water and food throughout the plant. When these three layers join up successfully, the new branch becomes just another part of the tree.
When you want to increase pollination and get loads more fruit off your tree, it’s good to have a few grafting techniques up your sleeve so you can choose the right one for your situation. Before grafting, it’s a good idea to sterilise tools with a blend of metho and water.
Whip and Tongue:
This technique creates Z-shaped puzzle pieces with increased surface area which helps the layers join up and keep a firm hold.
1. Locate where you want to graft the new plant (the scion) onto the exiting plant (rootstock). The stems should be of similar thickness, so that they fit together well. You may need to prune the rootstock to a suitable spot. Plan for the buds on the scion to face upwards and outwards.
2. Slice the rootstock at a sharp angle, this is the whip. Then make a short cut straight down around 1/3 in from the high end to make the tongue. Do the same on the scion, so the shape matches up and slots into the prepared rootstock.
3. Fit together the scion and rootstock, making sure at least one side of the union has the cambium layers touching. The great thing about grafting is that close enough is actually good enough.
4. Wrap the union with grafting tape, so it's nice and secure. You may also want to paint the ends with bitumen rubber or graft sealing paint, so it doesn't dry out.
Cleft Graft:
This technique creates V-shaped puzzle pieces and is more ergonomic when working with established trees or awkward angles.
1. Cut the rootstock at a point that has the same diameter as the scion. Then split it down the centre to create a cleft, this is where the scion will be inserted.
2. Cut the scion with a double bevel that tapers to a single point (V) and adjust the cuts until it is thin enough to insert snugly into the cleft.
3. Line up the union so that the cambium layers meet. Don't be tempted to centre the scion wood perfectly into the rootstock branch; it's rare that they'll be exact. You may want to put a little tilt in it, so that you know at least one or two points of cambium layer make contact.
4. Wrap the union with grafting tape and finish with sealing paint.
Now all that’s left to do is wait for spring when the grafts will take!
