"EUROPEANS ATE GROUND-UP EGYPTIAN MUMMIES!!!! ALL THE TIME!!!"
sounds much more dramatic than
"Europeans sometimes consumed ground-up Egyptian mummies, or fluid found inside the chest cavities of mummies, or a type of tree resin that became associated with mummies because it kind of looked like the bitumen used in the embalming process, or the dried and ground flesh of very specific European dead- most likely a bit of all of the above at various times in various places. but it's hard to say what the proportion of each was- and at least one early Middle Eastern physician, Abd al-Latif al-Baghdadi from modern-day Iran, also advised the use of the Body Cavity Liquid variety hundreds of years before the first documented use of mummy by Europeans. so it was a medicinal thing in the areas from whence the mummies came, too. unsurprising seeing as a lot of cultures- including Europeans -have done Corpse Medicine with their own people for centuries. there was also been pushback against the medicinal use of mummies in Europe since at least the 16th century; it remains unclear how popular the notion was at any given time. so the answer to Is This A Good Symbol For The Effects of European Colonialism In Egypt remains a resounding 'ehhh...?'"
"because the whole idea is, is it not, that Europeans were literally consuming the dead bodies of a non-European people who would have had no reason to sell their dead without a European market. and that's kind of true! there was a market that created a demand! but they were also already putting the bodies to these uses closer to home before Europeans started, because this whole thing began with both Arab and European doctors misinterpreting other Arab doctors who were talking about the medicinal qualities of tree resin. so really it's not as simple a situation as we might like to believe."
"and Mummy Brown paint is like this whole other situation where it was supposed to be made from ground-up mummies but often wasn't because Cost-Cutting, and a lot of artists didn't really like it anyway, and others used it thinking the name only referred to the color, and one time Edward Burne-Jones attempted an Egyptian funeral for a tube of Mummy Brown paint because he was so horrified with the origins, so while that's a more straightforward as an Oh Shit Violent Colonialism situation, people merrily waltzing into shops and buying one tube of Dead Egyptian Person, please, my good man! wasn't quite as widespread as one might now think"
"for me, the more compelling image of Europe Fucking Egypt Over is that of a white archaeologist peering curiously into a pit where Egyptian people are working tirelessly to excavate a tomb, their names to be lost to history in favor of whatever rich white person they toiled for. even that image is not without complicating factors- I, imagining it, am a white woman who cannot ask those Egyptian men what they think and feel about all their role in all this -but to me it seems more reliable than the VERY complex and often misinterpreted history of the mummy trade, even as I understand it after like an hour of research"
"on the OTHER HAND, does it even matter if people in the Middle East were already doing mummy medicine, when Europeans increased demand? does it even matter if Europeans felt bad or at least grossed out about Mummy Brown paint or if it wasn't ~always~ real mummies? maybe it doesn't! maybe my instincts as a history worker to say It's More Complicated are clouding my judgment on the nature of colonialism! or maybe they aren't! or maybe different people will think I'm right or think I'm full of shit and that's just the nature of doing public history on The Tungles!"
"anyway I have COVID and should probably go to bed now"
"this article and the Wiki page for Mummia are very well-sourced"

True Blue Steele (Deanās Hot Like A Sunrise)
Read on AO3 || Main Masterlist
Dean Winchester x Aussie!Reader
In Australia we have a guy called Bubble OāBill. Heās an icon. A delicious blend of chocolate, caramel and strawberry ice cream with a chocolate back and bubblegum nose. This is Deanās reaction to him. 1000 words (donāt count them š)
A/N: I planned to give Dean a Bubble OāBill ice cream, I conquered - and squeezed in as much Aussie slang as I could. Glossary below the fic for any non-Aussies who dare to read. This was written for @ambiguous-averyās Summer Snapshot Challenge
Thereās nothing like an Aussie summer. Itās no different from anywhere else youāve been in the world, if youāre honest, but that isnāt what you tell people. No Australian does.
Youāve already warned Dean about the drop bears and their love of Vegemite sandwiches. Told him to avoid standing under any tree. And, hey. You once had him believing Crocodile Dundee was your uncle. Lived down the street from you growing up. That part was half true.
Jokes aside, thereās something magical about the sunburnt country. The sea air on the coast, the fragrance of wattle and eucalyptus swept through it. The sand, the dirt, the bitumen on the road that sticks to your thongs and breaks the fuckers, leaving most of the population barefoot and shirtless.
That was you once. A feral kid running around town.
But thereās a monster to hunt now, for some rando reason, and you and Sam and Dean are here hunting it down.
Only sometimes you need to refuel.
Sometimes Dean does too.
While heās living it up with his newfound addiction to meat pies and sausage rolls, and Samās god knows where, youāve wandered across the street to the servo, gunning for lollies, chips and, best of all, the ice cream youāve been craving since you hit the ground.
You step out onto the main drag. The edging of the famous bright blue and pink wrapper in your hands.
Itās been a long time since youāve had one, and you might just have two more in your bag.
Youāre quick to draw, much like your beloved is with a real gun, tearing the plastic open, careful not to lose his nose. You pinch the stick between finger and thumb as you get rid of your rubbish. Take your first delicious bite and cross the street.
The sun draws a sheen to your head, but the creaminess of Billās chocolate hat and crispy chocolate backing counteracts the heat. Soothes the tip of your tongue.
āYou didnāt tell me they do bacon ones, too,ā Dean says as you step up to the picnic table heās all set up at. White paper bags and empty tomato sauce sachets littered in front of him. Hints of bottle-green paint chipped below it, all blending into the grass before you. Even the ocean looks green today.
āItās just diced ham. Nothing special.ā You shrug. Take another bite of your ice cream, only to splinter the base in two.
Your palm reaches out to catch a large flake, lip swiping low to reach a sliver of the strawberry layer that caught your chin as you moved.
āWhatās that?ā Deanās pastry lined shadow points to the cowboy in your hands.
āA Bubble OāBill.ā
Dean repeats it like the name is holy. Eyes lit up as he comes closer to inspect the face, nose to nose, with yours and with Billās. āIs that what I think it is?ā
āItās an ice cream,ā you say.
āYeah. But-but itās a cowboy one. You guys donāt have cowboys here.ā
āNo one has cowboys anymore.ā You snort. āBut, yeah, heās a cowboy. You want one?ā
Deanās eyes light up like itās the last smile heās ever going to give. His freckle-dusted cheeks, as pink as the bubblegum nose on your Bill.
āYou got me one?ā
āI got you two.ā Youāll just pretend you hadnāt planned on eating all three. Not when he looks the way he looks. A child on Christmas. One whoās been given a million bucks, and out too long in the unforgiving Australian sun.
Youāll forgive him this once for not listening to you about slip, slop, slapping. Heās the Rhonda to your Ketut, hot like a sunrise, raccoon eyes and all. Looking mighty adorable as he takes his first bite. His brilliant greens, candy-like against the equally green gumball nose.
āSo whatās with the cowboy?ā he says.
āDunno, why?ā
āFigured you guysād have that blue dog or that guy with the bucket for a hat as an ice cream over a gunslinger.ā
You stare into the distance for a moment at his comment, dumbfounded. Not sure whether to be surprised he knows who Bluey is or that heās heard of Ned Kelly.
āHow the hell do you know who either of them are?ā you say as you pluck out your gumball with precision so you can finish the strawberry centre.
Dean just looks at you like you insulted John Wayne. But while his eyes narrow at you, his tongue still works his Bill. āHey, Ledgerās no Leto,ā he says between licks, twisting his arm to scoop up a drip forming at the side. āBut he sure beat Nicholson. And that dog is cute like Dory.ā
Cute comment aside, āDonāt you mean Nemo?ā
āHeās not blue.ā He swipes his head through the air, matter-of-fact, and youāre just as dumbfounded as before,
āSheās not Aussie.ā
āShe wouldnāt go for a guy like me, either.ā His non-eating hand grabs yours, intertwining his fingers, squeezing gently. āNot like you.ā
āWell, Iām not a fish.ā
You turn towards the surf, sticking the whole stick in your mouth to get the last morsels of ice cream, dragging it back with your teeth. You pucker and pop your lips when you release it, knowing heās watching.
āNo, youāre not.ā He chuckles. āYouāre making mighty fine work of that stick, though.ā
You grin. Wiggle your brows and hips a little. Play into the sultry look heās giving you and rub your thumb over the back of his hand. āIf you donāt hurry up and eat that other ice cream, Iām making work of it, too.ā
Thereās no way youāre letting that thing go to waste. Youād gladly eat it and get two more. Who cares about the belly ache after?
But Deanās grabbing it and peeling back the wrapper, before you can so much as blink.
āGet your own,ā he says.
āIt was mine,ā you spit back, and he feigns hurt to insult, to a playful smirk.
He puts the bullet-hole end of Billās hat up to your mouth, but you donāt bite, knowing heāll just pull it away. You know him too damn well, so you do what any sweet girl would do in a pinch, and push it into his nose instead.
Of course, you donāt leave him this way.
You kiss the strawberry off his chin, lick the caramel from his top lip and let him taste them both on his tongue. āBut youāre mine, too.ā
Obligatory Jensen chewing gum because why not.
True Blue Aussie Glossary
True Blue: genuine, quintessentially Aussie. Someone or something can be true blue.
Drop Bears: feed on the tourists. Give them a Vegemite sandwich and they might leave you alone.
Vegemite: that black, salty spread no one outside of Australia likes. Iām telling you guys, itās delicious on toast when done right. Even Mark Sheppard says so.
Sunburnt country: itās a nod to a poem we (at least, my generation) learnt in school.
Wattle: is a native Australian tree. Bright yellow and tiny flowers.
Thongs: lol - just in case anyoneās scratching their head who hasnāt seen me or anyone else use this one before. Flip-flops are sticking to the road there, not the underwear kind (we call them g-strings or g-bangers - I donāt know why).
Rando: random. We shorten everything.
Servo: short for service station. AKA a gas station.
Lollies: candy. Except itās anything but chocolate. Think gummy bears, bubblegum, lollipops as a collective.
Slip, Slop, Slap(ping): a campaign we had here to wear sunscreen. Slip on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen, and slap on a hat.
Rhonda and Ketut: the greatest love story of all time (itās a bunch of TV commercials selling car insurance). Rhonda has a beautiful brake foot, and sheās hot like a sunrise. Ketut is her Balinese toy boy. In one of the commercials her sunburn forms raccoon eyes where her sunglasses had been.
Bluey: that adorable blue heeler. If you donāt know her, youāve been living under a rock.
Ned Kelly: a famous name in Australian history. He was a bush ranger. Heath Ledger played him in a movie based on his life. I figured Deanās love of movies might make him aware of the role.
Ten points to Gryffindoor if you spotted any extra slang or references!
I wanted to squeeze in another pun about Rhonda and Ketut at the end, or a āI just want milk that tastes like real milk,ā but they just didnāt fit. Hope you enjoyed ā¤ļø

THE MOURNING AFTER.
ā³ synopsis: mirio knew since you started dating in first year that you were the one. for years, you'd assimilated into each other's routines irrevocably. it's just a shame it couldn't continue into forever.
ā³ character/s: togata mirio
ā³ warnings: fluff to angst, death, grieving, graphic description of injury
ā³ word count: 1k
ā³ notes: i'm sorry to do this to our sunshine boy, but i love angst-
š«ššŖš®šš¬šš¢š§š š«š®š„šš¬Ā /Ā šš”šš«ššššš« š„š¢š¬šĀ Ā /Ā š¦šš¬ššš«š„š¢š¬š šØš š¦šš¬ššš«š„š¢š¬šš¬Ā /Ā š°š¢š© š„š¢š¬š
your voice was the soundtrack to mirio's life as of his first year at ua. the unique harmonisation of your vocal cords echoed through his eardrums for months before he finally asked you on a date. it murmured him to sleep ā he always snuck into your house or dorm at nights ā and chimed him awake without fail.
people used to talk about the angel on their shoulder as a guiding voice, but mirio always thought of you as his compass. not an angel, not a devil, just you; a melody that eased his aching heart and whisked away his fears when he needed it most. even when you weren't by his side, your voice reverberated in his skull.
"lemillion? that's a cool hero name."
"you're improving so much! i'm so proud of you."
"i love you, quirk or no quirk."
your touch warmed his skin regardless of how many layers he wore, though not as hot as when you first seared his hand with your kindness. the absence of your fingers intertwined with his dampened his signature smile.
the knots in his shoulders dissipated beneath your hands, and the fatigue from training took their place. he once thought to buy a weighted blanket, but your head on his chest overrode that decision. the pins and needles in the morning was worth every millisecond that you remained in his arms the previous night.
mirio relished every gentle squeeze of your hand before a crucial battle and each tender kiss when he came out alive. a pout occupied his features every time you gave him a peck on the cheek until you kissed him properly.
despite the affection you had given him that morning, a smile failed to cross his lips. the chaos of war competed with his inner voice ā your voice ā as all for one's forces clashed with heroes. you were nowhere to be seen, but he wasn't granted the privilege to fight by your side.
he would perpetually regret not fighting for that honour.
a sharp ring possessed mirio's eardrums as a hush finally fell upon the city. the adrenaline coursed through his veins despite the peace that settled throughout the decimated streets. a relieved sigh nearly escaped his lungs, but his stuttering heartbeat blocked it.
the ringing grew louder when he spied your figure being carried by deku. his hurried footsteps drowned out the sound of your name falling from his lips.
"i'm sorry..." deku mumbled when your weight transferred to mirio's arms. "i tried to save them, but-"
"it's ok."
the comfort your skin would normally provide mirio triggered an isolated chill beneath his torn hero costume. the pros stared on in sorrow, but said nothing, even when his knees collided with the fractured bitumen.
"can you hear me?" he asked weakly. a thumb caressed the side of your face and smudged the blood along your face like a stroke of paint. "we can go home now."
your face remained statuesque, and your larynx failed to sound again. the quiet percussion of your breathing didn't join his, but the deafening silence said more than he wished for.
"it's over..." he rasped, holding your head to his with an unmistakable tremor. "it's over..."
onlookers weren't sure if that was a reprieve or a burden. they didn't know you properly, but they wouldn't deny the tragedy that was your untimely fate. mirio planted a prolonged kiss to your icy lips to distract from the deep gash that tore your side open. the tendons and veins nearly spilled onto the ground had his hand not held onto your waist for dear life.
"i love you." he twisted the promise ring on your finger absentmindedly. "always will."
mirio reluctantly slid your ring from your hand and pulled his necklace out from underneath his costume. a matching ring rested against his chest, and he added your blood-stained one to the chain dangling around his neck for safe keeping.
your corpse was lifted from his arms, but your weight had yet to free his mind as he stared at the blood-stained road beneath his knees. tamaki hesitated from behind mirio before reaching a light hand to grasp his shoulder in solidarity. nejire sniffled quietly and knelt beside them, wrapping her arms around the usually smiley boy's still shoulders.
the days following were a blur for everyone, though mirio wasn't certain a day had even passed when you weren't there to greet him each morning. by now, the blood that coated your ring had been washed off and forever rested beside his heart. he changed the chain for a sturdier one, for he refused to take it off even to shower.
tears hadn't fallen from his eyes still. they didn't until he graduated ua and became a pro hero.
there was a party that night celebrating their successful promotion to pro heroes, but he didn't stick around long. he exchanged the rowdiness of freshly graduated students for the ambience of the cemetery. he always visited every week with a new bouquet of flowers ā god forbid there were no flowers on your grave for more than a few seconds ā and a story about his week.
"hi, my love," he began, crossing his legs as he sat before your headstone. "i graduated ua today... wish you were here to graduate with me."
the wind rustled his hair, but your voice didn't grace his ears.
"i miss you," he admitted to the breeze. "i keep waiting for you to walk into the classroom at any moment and tell me it's ok, that it was just a dream." calloused fingers adjusted the flowers wrapped in tissue paper. "we always talked about what we'd do when we were pros," he continued. "all of my plans included you, so i'm not sure where to go now."
he could imagine the words you'd say to him so clearly he thought you were truly there for a fleeting moment. mirio's blue eyes met yours in the photo he'd chosen to leave at your grave, then your visage blurred. a broken sob seized his shoulders and air hiccupped through his esophagus in irregular beats.
"i wish you didn't go alone," he wailed. "i'm sorry i wasn't there." his lips quivered uncontrollably as his burdened tears fell to the granite slate that barricaded your body from him. "wait for me, please. i'll make you proud, then maybe we can finally be together again... forever this time."
still, no response. there never would be one ever again.

According the ancient Greek historian Diodorus, the wealth of Ancient Babylon was derived almost entirely from bitumen(essentially crude oil). Diodorus claims they would extract bitumen from the ground then use it in nearly everything from warships to pottery. It was used as a sealant to waterproof ships and homes, it could be refined into a paint, and was burnt in Babylon's kilns and forges to fuel their industrial production.
After reading this I'm convinced the Diodorus somehow time traveled to modern day Saudi Arabia and mistook it for ancient Babylon.

ATTENTION ARTISTS!!
I have been going down an art history hyperfixiation at the moment, so Iām going to make it all of you lovely peopleās problem.
I have an art challenge for you! Throughout history, there have been multiple famous painters that use ālimited palettesā, which are palettes that only have a few specific colors and nothing else. This would add a level of challenge while also making their art distinct.
In this event, you must use a different color palette used by famous painters for 7 days.
RULES
You can do this digitally or traditionally
ONLY THE PALETTE OF THE DAY, NO OTHER COLORS.
You dont have to use every color listed in the designated palette, because some of them are VERY long.
Some of the colors (i.e: vermillion, cadmium, lead) are actually TOXIC paints. DO NOT USE THE ACTUAL TOXIC PAINT. This is for your safety; please use the shades similar to it.
Make sure to use the tag #limitedpaletteweek so I can see :D
Have fun!
Day 1: Anders Zorn
Ochor Yellow, Ivory Black, Titanium White and Vermillion
Day 2: Paul Gaugin
Prussian blue, Cobalt blue, Emerald green, Viridian, Cadmium yellow, Chrome yellow, Red ochre, Cobalt violet, Lead white, Zinc white

Who wants to see a bit of art that I did for Death Shall Come on Swift Wings by @lennjamin-o7 ???
Too bad so sad you're seeing it anyways!

Listen, Lenn said that the type of clothes that Philza would be wearing would be Mesopotamian. You think I'm not going to jump on that?? I so am. Also, the jewelry is beautiful, I'm very tempted to make some in that style (even if I'd never wear it)
Let me link the fic here before I ramble too much: https://archiveofourown.org/works/50266048/chapters/126974530
I can't sing the praises of this fic enough. It's got language barriers, I love that shit, and the way Lenn formats it--oh my GOD please read it!
Ok, so, more details on the art and process if anyone wants them, as well as the scribble sheet I was taking notes on.
So most of my reference for the jewelry came from pictures of artifacts from the royal tomb of Ur and Queen Pu-abi's jewelry. I would KILL to see the artifacts in situ but oh well.
This is my scribble sheet. Highlights include complaining about the article saying that the only reason jewelry was found in men's graves and daggers found in women's graves were bribes for the gods of the afterworld, and a mild breakdown once I found out what bitumen was. My brother suffered through extended rants on both but he deserved it.

Some notes:
-Lenn says that Phil was a god of Magic (simplified explanation ngl) and the Sumerians were obsessed with Lapis Lazuli. Maybe that's why Lapis is used in enchanting, Phil was obsessed with the stuff. If we're assuming Minecraft Enchanting rules in this setting.
-Sumer is actually where we get the measurement of time from! They were the ones who liked the number 60, and 24, and all that. I noticed that there was repetition of 12 and 8 in the jewelry I saw, especially with Pu-abi's choker and the 8-point rosette. If I had made Phil wear Pu-abi's choker, it would have been an 8-point star/flower...both for simplicity and also because I think the love of 12 as a base may not have been used so much as 8. I could go on and on and on, but I'll stop there
-Carnelian, Lapis, and gold were the most common material used in jewelry, so I went with Phil having predominantly Lapis and Gold, with a little carnelian mixed in. If I were to make a version of this with Techno, he'd have predominantly carnelian. If I cared more about the symbolism of stones I'd go look that up but I also know I'd start looking like a conspiracy theorists if I do that
-Philza's clothing and jewelry are very understated; I figured this would be what he would wear when he was more relaxed and just chilling, and so potentially what outfit he got trapped in for thousands of years.
-I was thinking about adding beaded strings draping over his wings, but if this is meant to be a chill-time outfit, he probably wouldn't deal with that. Or he took them off before going to destroy the world, I imagine they'd get tangled the hell up
-I wonder if the people who trapped him stole all the jewelry around the palace. I wonder if they ended up in museums...though Phil would probably just take them back and nobody would really protest. But imagine if he DID humor the curators of the museum even a little
-the jewelry was done with acrylics, including metallic for the gold, and the rest was watercolor
-I'm probably going to experiment with metallic paint for the feathers, but that's not right now.
Anyways, that's it!

#philza minecraft#philza#death shall come on swift wings to him who disturbs the peace of the king#I'm also going to throw the art in Lenn's askbox like a cat dropping off a dead bird#I had maybe too much fun with this#Sohr's Art

A Poem, A Friend Shep-en-Mut "The painted wooden face was known to me. She stood in the dusty museum sun, Painted eyes lengthened with kohl. Azure, terra-cotta, white, Emblazoned cartonnage. The Isis wings, spread in care and love. Curving protective Neckbet and Nepthys. Beneath, the corticated skin, Black bitumen. Eyeless, cracked and black, Dessicated viscera, wrapped apart. Leaving child and husband, moving through satin bands of shadow, Singing in the ecstatic sun. Feet hissing through the silken sand She carried the Milk Jar and a Palm frond, Worshipping and serving each day. This lady was the songstress of Amun-Re, Her songs curved upward in the great Temple of Thebes. The stone beauty of the face of the God above her frailty Gave her voice a scope of praise denied to our dessicated senses When death stooped on her, claws and beak ripped. Then feathers lay outstretched in love. Horus wings, Night Heron beak, Having slain, now standing guard in fearful phalanx. Leaving the echo between the roof trees. Her flesh must be pickled, cured with cinnamon and myrrh. The skull, frail as a blown egg, Emptied of its convolute majesty, Stuffed with delicate resinous rags. When the sucking natron has had its meal Her shell will taste the shriving sun and wind once more. Blow gently, shine kindly down, Amun-Re, on thy slave. She shall be wrapped in fine linen Layer on layer, and laced like a shoe. The last we shall see in linen and plaster and paint. May her journey be safe through the dark tunnels May her soul sing in light before her God, In soft peace. The holding wings enfold my friend. Priestess of Thebes. Singer of Amun-Re Bearer of the little Milk Jar." - Elizabeth Sigmund

Moments in Time: Chapter 2 (sneak peek)
Should have this done in the very near future, just gotta finish editing the part where it jumps back to Doc and Lightning...

Cycle 9: August 12th, 1936
āAnnette?ā
A Cadillac series 62 Sedanette looked up from the engine that she had been rebuilding, her striking, Dartmouth green paint hidden beneath a bulky, leather tool belt.Ā There were splotches of oil and grease all over, but she didnāt seem to notice or care.
Idling near the breezeway was a blue Oldsmobile model 30E coupe, one Otis Glenrunner.Ā Otis was Annetteās father, and patriarch of the once-sizable Glenrunner family in Dawsonville.Ā He was also the proprietor and chief mechanical engineer of Glenrunnerās All-in-One, a full-service garage and convenience store serving all of Dawson County, Georgia.
āOi, Pa,ā Annette said happily, stowing her tools on the magnetic strips of her tool belt and rolling over to meet him.
He smiled as she nuzzled his front right fender affectionately.Ā āYou knowā¦you should still be resting.ā
āIāve been cooped up for three weeks, Pa,ā She pursed her lips āMy platinā has been hard for 24 hours, almost double the recommended time, and this engine aināt gonna rebuild itself.ā She gestured behind her towards a disassembled 221 cubic-inch, flathead V8 that was spread out across the entirety of her workbench.
āAlright, if thatās what ya wanna doā¦ā
āIt sure is.ā She smiled, broadly.Ā āItās so much easier to work on things, now!āĀ She made a graceful turn before pushing herself as tall as she could with her front suspension.Ā āI can actually look down into an engine without havinā to get me up on a lift!ā
Otis beamed at her proudly.Ā Annette had just finished her 11th-year growth spurt, and though he knew right from the start that she would mature into the newest model of the 62-series, he was expecting something more in keeping with her brothers: An egg-crate grill, protuberant hood, big, rounded steel fenders reminiscent of a truck, and large bumpers.Ā But Annetteās model, the sedanette, was sleek and stylish in a way that heād only ever seen in Packards and Talbots, with in-line front fenders, a smaller, rounded grille, opulent chrome stylings and gorgeous, upturned fins on her rear fendersā¦a novel design element that would, undoubtedly, make its way to other makes and models in the future.Ā Ā Ā
āSoā¦whatācha need?ā Annette asked, suddenly, snapping him away from his thoughts.Ā
āDo ya have a minute to talk?Ā Weā¦umā¦ā He paused, unsure of how to bring up a topic that heād been dreading for the last four months.Ā āā¦We gotta discuss somethinā important.ā
Annette nodded.Ā āItās about me beinā eleven now, right?ā
āYeahā¦ā
She chuckled.Ā āI was wonderinā when youād be bringinā it up.ā She looked around the garage.Ā It was Monday and all of Otisā appointments, thus far, had been quick and easyāoil changes, wheel alignments, and the like.Ā He didnāt have any afternoon clients, but there was always the possibility that anyone shopping next door could hear them.Ā āDo you wanna talk about it here, orā¦?ā
āNot here,ā He gestured down the breezeway beyond the shop.Ā āFigure we could talk in the kitchen,ā He smirked at her.Ā āYou still craving moss and crab?ā
āMoss, more so,ā She admitted, sheepishly.Ā āCrabs are cuteā¦I feel bad every time I gotta eat one.ā
Otis chuckled as they started down the hall.Ā āAt least you aināt craving bitumen...ā
Annette laughed and gave her father a playful bump on his front fender.Ā āWaitā¦you craved bitumen?Ā Really?āĀ Bitumen was the sludge left over from petroleum distillation.Ā Despite being edible, fresh batches had the same pungent smell and texture as the waste products that their own bodies produced.Ā Ā
They rolled into the kitchen.Ā It was a quaintly-decorated space with a single window illuminating wall-to-wall chestnut cabinets, a pantry, marble countertops, a small washbasin-stove combo, and a table large enough to accommodate their whole family at the same time.
As Annette crossed the threshold, she took note of the table and froze, sapphire blue eyes wide in disbelief.Ā
The entire thing was covered in lettersā¦and they were ALL addressed to her. āWhatā¦?āĀ She gave the older car a questioning look.Ā Ā
Otis frowned.Ā āWell, youāre eleven, nowā¦ā He averted his gaze.Ā āThemās marriage proposalsā¦ā
