The land of beautiful sunsets : Bir
"The gentle wind kissed my cheeks softly the pristine meadow had a sight to behold My heart fluttered hard This time, the grass was greener on my side "
Crack of Dawn
Everyone comes across a moment in their life when they gather the courage to do something for the first time in their life and I did it too. City and college life had me gripped in the continuous loop of tiring schedule and my head in between books. I chose to travel solo for a few days. Choosing a particular place was a real struggle but after a lot of internet surfing and considering numerous factors I settled for a beautiful place famous for its sunsets, cafe's, monasteries, and paragliding :- BIR.
REACHING BIR
The lively colors, flags, and the mountains had a perfect chemistry together
I had booked a semi-sleeper Volvo from ISBT Delhi Kashmere gate to BIR. The bus departed around 9 in the evening and reached Bir around 7 in the morning at the nearest market to The Hosteller in which I had booked a bed in an 8-bed dormitory. I called and asked for the directions and it was quite easy to locate my hostel. The view from The Hosteller was spectacular, the lush green mountains, open grounds with flags, and the cold breeze it all had my heart at the very first sight.
TIP:-There are other options available too, either you can book a direct Volvo according to your budget or you can book a train from Delhi to Pathankot, take another toy train to Ahju which is only 3 km away from Bir.
DAY 1: "FINDING A HIDDEN GEM"
The sky had its own charm that day
I was welcomed by Joey the doggo. After having an omelet, strong coffee, and stuffing my backpack into my bed I was ready to start my day. The hostel was all empty except me, the staff, and 2 other guys. I was amazed to hear their traveling stories. Our host joined us and told us what could be planned for the day. We decided to go for a hidden spot that our host had discovered on his own. We rented 2 scooters from a nearby dealer, put on our helmets and started our Journey of the day.The day was bright, the sun was sparkling over our heads and the wind cold but soothing. It was a sort of day you can mold into anything and we all were effortlessly making it the best. I won't reveal the spot, it would be better if you discover it on your own. ;) (It was a mountain with a small room on top which enabled us to have a 360-degree view)
It took us around 15 minutes, the next task was to climb around 200 steps and then climb on a not so steep mountain. Finally, after 25 minutes we stepped on the top of the mountain. My mouth fell open at the sight of whole Bir-Billing, marked by monasteries, clouds, and the sun still making it through the gaps in-between "bright". We played some songs and sat there silently for about 2 hours looking at the wonders of nature.
DAY 2: “PALPUNG SHERABLING MONASTERY”
Breakfast and meeting new travelers
A strong coffee, a good book, and light rain; What else do you need?
Next day we had our breakfast at the hostel only, as it was raining heavily and we sat with three new comers who had been traveling for about 2 weeks in the Himalayas and had booked beds in the same dormitory as ours. As it was the starting of September and the paragliding sessions had still not started the whole BIR was quiet and ours to explore. The afternoon went by talking and listening to the music of heavy rain and the wet leaves reminding us of the existence of little things we usually forget to appreciate in our daily life.
Visiting the Monastery in the rain
“Peace”
The sun was starting to fall and the rain had almost stopped, we picked our scooters and departed for the Palpung Sherabling Monastery, the way had become more beautiful because of the rain. The small huts on the way with small streams of water by their side, mountains in the background and small drizzling had held my eyes tight. It took us 10 minutes to reach there. The monastery had a beautiful view of green grass around and monks moving around with books in their hand pressed against their chest. It was all surrounded by the sounds of children playing, woman chatting and birds chirping. The prayers had been done so we went inside the monastery and enjoyed the peace and beautiful carnation. We directly went to nearby Cafe and had our dinner.
TIP:- Bir is famous for its monasteries, there are many monasteries like Chokling monastery, Nyingyang monastery, Tsering Jong monastery so you can visit as many as you like. Do you love exploring cafes? Bir is THE PLACE with amazing cafes like June 16, ara cafe, Garden cafe and many more to satisfy you stomach with tasty food and your heart with amazing views.
DAY 3:"LOOSING TRACK AND ENDING UP AT A BEAUTIFUL PLACE"
Accidentally finding a spot
Mountains covered in Green
Can you hear the rushing of water?
After a decent breakfast in the hostel as it was raining a little in the morning, we sat for a while, talking. Then we picked our scooters and went to find the Gunehar waterfall our host had told us about. We parked our scooter where the road ended and walked by the side of village locals, sheep, chickens. We asked the locals and decided that it would not be difficult to locate. Once we crossed the Gunehar village, the mountains were more close, and the east and west sides of the open valley were divided by a river. We climbed on a small mountain and enjoyed the super green view, the cold breeze, and the peace. We couldn't find the waterfall and in the end, we all laughed for we had seen the eternity and natural wonders but the goal, well unsuccessful yet happy with a day so wonderful we went again to the hostel to have some light food and some rest.
A night worth remembering with fellow travelers
Around 10 in the evening we all sat together with joey dosing off by my side and our manager telling tales about his experiences and amusing stories in The Hosteller with some local drink dangling somewhere in between our hands and our smiles. We all sang, shared music, and poetry. The sleep was nowhere around us so we decided to take a walk up to the paragliding site which was a kilometre away. We picked a light bag with the necessities and reached the site in 20 minutes. We couldn't locate a single soul apart from us and the peace around us was loud. The paragliding site was stretched in front of us in an open meadow. We laid there by the side of road starring at the stars and the site stretched in front of us, feeling the biting night wind, listening to music for 2 hours.
TIP:- The paragliding season generally starts from the 15th of September and is a busy and wonderful season to be in Bir. You can enjoy the paragliding tournaments too.
DAY 4: “MUST VISIT PLACES”
Gunehar Waterfall
Not even one of us could take our eyes of this beauty
We still had a curiosity for Gunehar waterfall so we decided to go with our host. We booked a cab and departed again. It started to rain lightly and the weather turned amazing. Finally, we reached THE WATERFALL, it was a spectacular view. We spotted many butterflies, dipped our legs in the super cold water, and sat there. One of us took a bath too, the water was so cold I didn't dare to even think of taking a bath. Once we reached and enjoyed a cup of coffee we bid goodbyes to our 3 friends as they had to leave for another journey.
The Northern Cafe
Cafes and books have a history in common , I think :)
Once the sun was nowhere to be seen we went to The northern cafe to have SIDDU, the traditional Himachali cuisine, also the view of The Northern cafe had my heart and is my favorite place in Bir. Also KARA and BUDDY, the golden retrievers welcomed us with love. All thanks to the fellow friend who suggested me this beautiful place.
DAY 5: "THE BIR MONASTERY"
Either the borders of a white sari or stupas, that’s where I like golden the most
When life gives you lemons, just sit and relax
Everybody left, except me and a friend whom I meet the first day We went to Glider's Pizzeria near the paragliding site but this time with us was joey too. We had a decent Pizza and cold coffee served by a beautiful lady in her late 40's who turned out to be the manager of the Cafe. After a little chit chat, it was time to visit a monastery, led by a narrow alley with one side lined by mountains closing it and the other by an open valley. Joey sat in between my legs with his face out of in the air to enjoy the beautiful way. The Bir Monastery has an amazing vibe with monks making their way peacefully around. The interior is different and there is also a shop within the boundaries where you can buy colorful prayer flags, bracelets, and Buddha figurine. At 6 in the evening I bid goodbye to my last fellow traveler and enjoyed the evening reading and scribbling.
DAY 6: "LAST LAZY DAY"
Travel far enough, you meet yourself
~ David Mitchell
I didn't want to move my lazy ass on the last day, so I spent it with joey, The Hosteller's staff playing cards, cricket and went to have lunch at The Northern cafe again with my diary to enjoy the view and my last moments in Bir. As I was sitting there I realized how these little steps can move your life, can shift your mind and change how you look at people around you.The staff, my fellow travelers and the beautiful Bir itself made my heart want to have more experience in travelling and surely has a major hand in my other solo trips. It made me trust strangers, laugh with them, and forget about my worries. I came back not just to have a fresh start in my life but also with memories.
TIP:- You can also enroll yourself in other activities like camping, shopping on Bir road, mountain biking and most importantly go to billing which is 14 km away from Bir.
You can rent mixed bed dormitory room in hostels like Zostel, The Hosteller, goStop, the bunker Bir or you can book a private room too in the hostels or hotels around.
In love with sunsets? Bir is especially famous for its sunsets, the sky changes color magnificently and let you have one of the most memorable sunset views.

A Foodie’s Guide to Bir Billing – The Paragliding Capital of India
Bir is a town situated in the west of Joginder Nagar Valley in the state of Himachal Pradesh in northern India. Now popular as the “Paragliding Capital of India“, Bir is likewise a prominent centre for ecotourism, spiritual studies and meditation. Bir is also home to a significant Tibetan refugee settlement with severable known Buddhist Monasteries . While Billing is the take off site for paragliding and Bir is where the landing site is; collectively it is referred to as “Bir Billing”.
In the past few years, Bir has become quite popular with the travellers, specially with those who are living the Digital Nomad Life. Popular hostel chains such as Zostel, The Hosteller, The Bunker etc have opened up properties in Bir, catering to the demand of the growing travellers, and likewise the Cafe culture has also grown and developed in the past 2-3 years.
A lot of creative minds, who chose to escape the city life and move to the mountains, have made Bir their home now! And the fact that there are direct buses plying between Bir and Delhi on a daily basis, has contributed significantly in the growth of tourism in the Paragliding Capital of India.
All these factors have made Bir Billing not only a popular Weekend Getaway destination, but also one of India’s growing Digital Nomad Hotspot.
I was fortunate to have spent around 2 weeks in March 2020 (Before Coronavirus aka COVID – 19 was declared an Pandemic by WHO), in Bir Billing, getting High on Himalayas, with a bunch of amazing people, and trying out different dishes to Eat in Bir Billing, on a daily basis, which helped compile this Bir Billing Food Guide, which mainly highlights what’s special to Eat in the different cafes and restaurants in Bir Billing.
These places have been listed in chronological order, with respect to their location, as you walk from Choughan Chowk towards Landing Site in Bir.

Steamed and Fried Momos – Ram Bahadur Cafe
If you have a craving Momos, there’s no place better than Ram Bahadur Cafe !
This small ordinary looking food joint, holds a special place in the hearts of everyone who stays in Bir!
They have got Vegetable / Chicken / Mutton as a filling, which can be enjoyed either steamed, or fried. And my recommendation would be the Chicken Fried Momos, with spoonfuls of the yummy spicy chutney!
PS – Their momo chutney is to die for – just yummmm!

Thukpa and Devil Momo’s – Nyingma Restaurant
Another few steps from Ram Bahadur Cafe towards Gandhi Chowk, and you’ll find Nyingma Hotel – a bright yellow structure, on the Left side of the road.
This will look like one expensive restaurant, because of the plush interiors, but trust me, the rates are pretty economical, and the food tastes yummy.
While the restaurant serves a variety of dishes, I found the Thukpa and the Devil Momos to be the highlights at Nyingma Restaurant. And Ginger Lemon Honey tea of course.
Unlike a lot of places, where the Thukpa turns out to be either bland, or too spicy, the Thukpa here is just perfectly balanced, and pretty heavy too!
Devil Momos are basically fried momos, tossed and served in a spicy garlic gravy.
If you are looking for a place where you can chat with your friends, while having some really sumptuous food, Nyingma Restaurant is the place to be!
TBH, I found this to be one of Bir Billings hidden gems, with respect to this Bir Billing Food Guide ! You will mostly find locals here, rather than the tourists and travellers!

Hogging on Momos in Bir, be it fried, steamed or the devil momos, will forever remain one of my Most Memorable Experiences in the Himalayas.

Home Cooked Food – Kuckie’s Cafe
Kuckie’s Cafe deserves a special mention in this Bir Billing Food Guide !
Why ? You may ask ?
Well, ask any one who has been staying in Bir for a while, where they go to when they crave some Home Cooked food, and the answer will be unanimous – Kuckie’s Cafe !
The food served by Kuckie Aunty is simple, but yummy, and not that heavy on the pocket. The moment you step in Kuckie’s Cafe, you’ll feel as if, you’ve entered the living room of your house, and having a few words with Aunty will make you feel at home.
Whether you are looking for a quiet place to read a book, or work, or simply have a conversation – Its very easy to find a spot for yourself at Kuckie’s Cafe.
BTW if you are looking for a place to volunteer, Aunty is always on the lookout for a helping hand.
Yummy Home Cooked Food
Ghar ka Khaana
Kuckie’s Cafe
Hot Chocolate – June16
The strategic location of June16 Cafe, makes it one of the most popular and frequented cafes in Bir Billing, where travellers can be seen throughout the day, sipping a hot beverage like hot chocolate or coffee chatting with other travellers, and Digital Nomads, engrossed in their work, while sipping some yummy Hot Chocolate, which is what I would recommend you to try out as well.
Hot Chocolate @ June 16 Cafe
Vada Pav and Cutting Chai – Bombay Local
If you are craving some authentic and yummy Maharashtrian street food, such as Vada Pav and Pav Bhaji, along with the famed Cutting Chai, Bombay Local is where you should go to.
The Vada Pav is economically priced at INR 40, and will definitely take you back to the streets of Mumbai or Pune.
Vada Pav @ Bombay Local
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Pasta’s and Fresh Green Salads – Paloma Vegan Bistro
Probably the only Cafe in Bir Billing, that caters only to Vegan Food.
Paloma Vegan Bistro serves some really delectable cakes, pastas and fresh salads, which you should definitely try.
Fresh Green Salad @ Paloma Vegan Bistro
Himachali Siddu – The Northern Cafe
The Northern Cafe is one of the best places to catch the famed sunsets of Bir, with a panoramic view of the landing site in front, and the mighty Himalayas on the back.
While the food is a bit pricey here, its one of the few restaurants and cafes in Bir Billing, where you can have the traditional Himachali Siddu. Also to try are the yummy pakoras, while enjoying the sunset.
Also, if you are a Digital Nomad, and are looking for a quiet place to work, I would highly recommend you to make The Northern Cafe, as your workspace during the day, when there aren’t that many travellers present.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Mint Ice Tea – Musafir – The Traveller’s Cafe
If you are a traveler and are interested in the Indie Music scene, you might be aware about Musicathon Bir. Musafir Cafe is where it all started!
The Mint Ice Tea is sort of a legend, and I highly recommend you try it at Musafir – The Traveller’s Cafe, while enjoying the sunset, with soft Indie Music playing in the background.
If you are an artist, you are going to love the vibes at Musafir Cafe for sure.
I’ve also heard that their chicken curry is also quite sumptuous. So if you happen to stay here post sunset, you might want to check it out.

South Indian Food – Avva’s Cafe
Strategically located beyond the Landing Site in Bir Billing, overlooking the green terraced fields, Avva’s Cafe, serves the best South Indian Food in Bir Billing. Period.
Yes, dining at Avva’s cafe, will be a bit heavy on the pocket, but the moment you’ll have your first bite, you’ll realise, that its worth every penny.
The idlis are going to melt in your mouth, the sambar is perfectly balanced and is neither too sweet nor too spicy, the coconut chutney is something that you’ll keep asking more and more, the dosas will be crisp with just the right amount of filling. And did I forget to tell that, you’ll get Rasam with kaala chana on the house.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Avva’s Cafe has one of the Best views in Bir Billing, from where you can see the gliders fly in the sky, all day long.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Bnoffee Pie – Silver Linings
Another quaint cafe, famous with artists, digital nomads and the local community is the Silver Lining Cafe, just opposite Avva’s Cafe.
What usually happens is that, travellers have a heavy meal at Avva’s Cafe, and then cross the road and make their way to Silver Lining Cafe, where they just chill, connect with other travellers, and enjoy their cup of coffee!
The Bnoffee Pie along with Coffee is what I’ll recommend you to try at Silver Lining.
Bnoffee Pie @ Silver Linings
Anything and Everything – Kaafila
Tucked in the bylanes of Chaughan village, amidst bright yellow fields with the backdrop of snow clad peaks is a quaint cafe named Kaafila – from the streets of Bombay that offers you a slice of Bombay in the mountains.
From the iconic Bombay wada pav to pav bhaji and other mouth watering delicacies of mumbai street food, Kaafila serves it all.
Occasionally, you can find artistic souls creating soothing music or just leaving their footprints behind by painting a part of them on their art wall. Also, on bright sunny days they bake amazing sweet treats too giving you a complete experience of a guilty food trip filled with tons of entertainment as you connect with fellow travellers!
They also host pizza and burger nights, live sports streaming nights, BBQ and bonfire nights and gaming nights where the community of travellers meets and interacts with each other.
Musafir Cafe as mentioned above in this Bir Billing Food Guide, was previously where Kaafila, is today.

Vegetarian Thaali – Suryansh Bhojnalaya
This is the only place in this Bir Billing Food Guide, which is not near the landing site in Bir Billing, but on the highway from Bir to Palampur. Its 4 – 5 KM from the landing site, and the best way to go there is in a cab / your own vehicle if applicable.
The speciality of Suryansh Bhojnalaya serving only Vegetarian food is the Himachali Thaali and its pretty simple and straightforward affair. The food is sumptuous, healthy, and very economical.
One Thali for INR 150, is sufficient to feed two people, if they are not that hungry.
Himachali Thali @ Suryansh Bhojnalaya
Maggi and Chai – Multiple Places
This goes without saying, that the joy of having piping hot Maggi, while sipping Chai, is an experience thats synonymous with getting High on Himalayas.
Any any trip to the mountains is incomplete, if you haven’t sipped hot Chai, and slurped the Masala Maggi, while enjoying the view of the mighty Himalayas.
Getting Maggi and Chai in the mountains, is very easy, and can be found at multiple places through out Bir Billing, but the ones where you’ll have the best experience, are literally in the lap of the Mountains, away from the town.

Living rough, mobile rations, and rumours
Private Diary and Journal of a Light Horseman
Sgt William Peterson
2nd Australian Light Horse Regiment
EL-ARISH, SINAI PENINSULAR 3rd JANUARY 1917
Had very little sleep last night. I was awakened by a loose horse galloping about and then the rain came down very heavily for goodness knows how many hours. The blanket which I have stretched over for a roof began to leak and hey presto! the water commenced to ooze through and dripped through. However I got over to one side and dodged a considerable portion of it but some of the “bedclothes” [ahem!] got wet.
“Bedclothes” - good word that. Sounds homely. My mattress is a good one there is plenty of it in fact is spreads over the whole face of the Sinai Peninsular – SAND! And I have had same mattress now for many a long month now and may have it for a long time yet.
I was awake until close on 3 this morning and during that period I did a most extraordinary thing [to me extraordinary] I sat up during the night and consumed 4 slices of bread and jam. The reason for such an extraordinary thing is this. Since we have arrived at El Arish we have been on what is officially known as “Mobile Ration” which consists of:
Bully Beef Biscuits [army pattern Huntly and Palmers No 5 armour plated, fitted with rivet holes ready for rivetting on to any tank which has a shot hole in it, guaranteed to withstand all animates – and hammers!]. Cheese; very good and appertising but most frightfully binding Raisins, to act as a laxative and counteract the cheese so to speak. Figs – dried, preserved, don’t get them too often Tea and sugar, plenty. Milk. The “Ideal” brand also good. Marmalade ! Marmalade ! Marmalade ! And still more Marmalade! Nufsed. I will not waste any more good English in these pages re Marmalade as I want all the space to record other things but I think hard. Bread. Fairly often in fact we get it almost daily now.
That is a “Mobile Ration” No fresh beef and no vegetables which is the new essence of life hope to be put on those two in a few days now. So I might say that pro tem we are being badly fed. The camels available for bringing our stores and horse feed etc from Railhead are inadequate. I don’t know why. I must not question these things and the railhead is now about 6 miles from El Arish and huge gangs of the Egyptian Labour Corps [E.L.C.] are working at high speed to bring the railway up here with as little delay as possible. Hence the ‘mobile Ration" Hence the inadequacy of good nourishing food, and hence the Bread and Jam stunt in the middle of the night.
It is the first time since our arrival in Egypt from Gallipoli that I have complained about bad rations and ordinarily we are fed fresh beef and vegetables in abundance but just at present things are “tight”. In a day or so things generally will alter. There is a large A.I.F. Canteen back along the line at BIR-EL-mazar but they have not been able to get any stores up to us yet. my stomach rebels at Bully beef having had enough and to spare of that “muck” [a very suitable term] on Gallipoli.
Went out to exercise the horses this morning along the sea shore we walked them close to the waters edge and it was good fun watching the antics of them as each big breaker came ashore, sometimes coming up to the girth. The wind has been blowing something terrible during the night and this morning and waves were very high. There is a small mine sweeper run ashore – close by where she ran ashore several days ago in a gale. Great waves are breaking over her and she lies helpless on one side.
There is some sort of a mad rumour to the effect that Australia has asked for a separate peace, sounds too good to be true. Kaiser Bill will be saying Gott strafe Australia! He has “strafed” everyone else up to now.
There is also another rumour much nearer our hearts than that and that is “Get ready to move at 12 hours notice”! We may be going to take Rafa it may be soon and it may not eventuate for a few days but there it is.

Gelmiş Geçmiş En İyi 12 Yabancı Dizi
Gelmiş Geçmiş En İyi 12 Yabancı Dizi
Yabancı dizi denince akla gelen efsane olmuş birbirinden güzel 12 diziyi yazımızda sizlerle paylaştık. Keyifli okumalar..
How I Met Your Mother
Televizyon tarihinin belki de en ilginç yapımlarından biri olan How I Met Your Mother, dünya genelinde en sevilen sitcom dizilerinden biri durumunda. Ted ve Marshall’ın nasıl tanıştıklarıyla başlayan dizi, efsane karakterlerle sitcom denince akla ilk gelen diziler arasında yer alma özelliğini sürdürüyor.
Dr. Who
Two Broke Girls
Max ve Caroline isminde, hayat görüşleri çok farklı iki garsonun eğlenceli hayatını ekranlara taşıyan dizi, tam 6 sezon devam etmişti. Karakterler arasında geçen diyalogların sosyal medyada mizah malzemesi olarak kullanıldığı yapımın dünya genelinde birçok seveni bulunuyor.
Supernatural
The Cosby Show
En eski yapımlardan biri olan The Cosby Show, Bill Cosby’nin yer aldığı televizyon dizisiydi.
The Walking Dead
The Big Bang Theory
Sitcom denince akla ilk gelen yapımlardan biri olan The Big Bang Theory’nin olmadığı bir liste elbette düşünülemezdi. Oldukça zeki 2 ev arkadaşının karşı dairelerine taşınan Penny ile yaşadıklarına odaklanan yapım, 12 sezon sürmüştü.
The Vampire Diaries
The Office
Günümüz ofis yaşamını Dunder Mufflin Kağıt Şirketi aracılığıyla bizlere aktaran dizi, oldukça komik diyaloglara ve harika bir kurguya sahipti. 9 sezon boyunca devam eden dizi, aynı zamanda birçok ödülün de sahibi olmuştu.
Lost
Game Of Thrones
