Plastic Bags And Sacks Market Dynamics: Global Growth and Trends (2023-2032)
Tumblr media
The plastic bags and sacks sector is predicted to continue its upward trend between 2024 and 2032, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 32.30%. From its projected USD 1725.8 million in 2023 to USD 21430.34 million in 2032, the market will continue to grow.
The global plastic bags and sacks market is a significant segment within the broader packaging industry, driven by various applications across different sectors such as retail, food and beverage, consumer goods, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture. This market is characterized by the widespread use of plastic bags and sacks due to their versatility, durability, and cost-effectiveness. Plastic bags and sacks come in various types, including biodegradable, compostable, and conventional plastic bags, each catering to different consumer needs and regulatory environments.
The demand for plastic bags and sacks has been influenced by several factors, including urbanization, increased retail activities, and consumer preference for convenient packaging solutions. However, the market faces challenges such as environmental concerns and stringent regulations aimed at reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable alternatives. Innovations in materials, such as biodegradable and compostable plastics, are gaining traction as they offer a potential solution to environmental issues while maintaining the functional benefits of traditional plastic bags.
Plastic bags and sacks are harmful to the environment for several reasons:
Non-biodegradability: Traditional plastic bags are made from polyethylene, a type of plastic that takes hundreds to thousands of years to decompose. This long decomposition period means that plastic bags accumulate in the environment, contributing to pollution.
Wildlife Threats: Plastic bags pose a significant threat to wildlife. Animals often mistake plastic bags for food, leading to ingestion that can cause blockages in their digestive systems, leading to starvation or death. Additionally, animals can become entangled in plastic bags, which can result in injury or drowning.
Marine Pollution: A significant amount of plastic waste ends up in the oceans, forming large gyres of floating plastic debris. Marine life, including fish, seabirds, and mammals, is severely affected by this pollution. Microplastics, formed from the breakdown of larger plastic items, can be ingested by marine organisms, entering the food chain and potentially affecting human health.
Chemical Leaching: Plastic bags can leach harmful chemicals into the soil and water as they break down. These chemicals can contaminate groundwater and soil, affecting plant growth and entering the food chain through crops and water sources.
Resource Consumption: The production of plastic bags requires significant amounts of fossil fuels, contributing to resource depletion and greenhouse gas emissions. The extraction and processing of these resources also cause environmental degradation.
Litter and Aesthetic Impact: Plastic bags are a common form of litter, often found in streets, parks, and natural landscapes. This litter not only detracts from the aesthetic value of these areas but also contributes to pollution and potential hazards for wildlife.
Waste Management Challenges: Plastic bags are challenging to recycle due to their lightweight and flexible nature, which can clog machinery at recycling facilities. As a result, many plastic bags end up in landfills, where they occupy space and contribute to long-term environmental issues.
The plastic bags and sacks market is experiencing several notable trends driven by environmental concerns, regulatory changes, and evolving consumer preferences. One of the most significant trends is the shift towards sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives, such as biodegradable and compostable bags, as consumers and governments increasingly prioritize reducing plastic waste. Regulatory measures, including bans and taxes on single-use plastic bags in various regions, are accelerating this transition and encouraging innovation in sustainable materials. Additionally, there is a growing emphasis on recycling and circular economy practices, with companies investing in advanced recycling technologies to repurpose plastic waste into new products. Consumer awareness about the environmental impact of plastic pollution is also rising, leading to increased demand for reusable bags and other sustainable packaging options. Furthermore, technological advancements in material science are enabling the development of stronger, lighter, and more versatile plastic bags that meet both functional and environmental criteria. These trends collectively indicate a market moving towards greater sustainability and innovation in response to global environmental challenges.

Biodegradable Plastic Bags: A Key Player in the Packaging Industry By 2023 to 2030
Tumblr media
The Global biodegradable plastic bags & sacks market is forecasted to grow significantly, with a projected US$ 2,668.59 million in 2023 at a CAGR of 7.70% and expected to reach a staggering US$ 4,492.20 million by 2030.
The wide range of applications for plastics in sacks and bags, together with the inadequate disposal of these materials, will probably compound the pollution problem caused by conventional plastics derived from petroleum. Biodegradable sacks and bags are made from a variety of natural plant products, including polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), polylactic acids (PLAs), and corn. They also include chemicals to aid in the breakdown process, which lessens their negative effects on the environment as a whole and on aquatic life specifically. People prefer these biodegradable bags to conventional plastic items, particularly for food packing and quickly-moving consumer goods.

Why Juco Shopping Bags Have Gained Popularity?
Tumblr media
The world is witnessing a drop in the use of plastic bags as information began circulating about its adverse effects on the planet. Sustainable materials such as Juco shopping bags are slowly replacing plastic bags in the market. Consumers love the transformation from plastic to jute shopping bags. Reportedly, Bangladesh witnessed a massive production of jute fiber in 2020 i.e. 804 million tons. Following are the advantages that draw more and more people in to buy jute shopping bags.
1.       Low maintenance
Let's first address the elephant in the room. Plastic bags are mostly used as one-time-use bags. You can't expect one plastic bag to last for years to come. So, what's the substitute? Jute bags which is last for several months or even years.  All you need to do is get some hot water, dip a cloth in it, and wipe the bag clean. Avoid washing it to prevent the natural fiber from losing color.
2.       Fashionable
Jute bags are super flexible allowing you to unleash your creativity on it. Given their bounce and flexibility, you can mold it into desired shapes & sizes. Dye or paint your favorite patterns or texts. High quality Jute santa sacks have been manufactured for Christmas and it's safe to say that they performed extremely well.
3.       Reusability
The lifespan of a jute bag is around 2 years and can last longer when maintained properly. You can take it along every time you go out. Here's an interesting fact: once you complete the cycle of using it 30 times, you contribute to reduced waste and carbon footprint as compared to when you used plastic bags before. Every time the bag gets wet, make sure to dry it. This way, the original condition will remain intact for a longer period.
4.       Environment friendly
Did you know that jute requires very less effort for cultivation? Well, yes. Farmers can produce a fresh batch of jute at the interval every 4-6 months. The fast-planting methodology not only requires very less area but also brings fertility back to the soil. Natural rainfall is enough for the jute plants to thrive. Pesticides and fertilizers are out of the picture. Moreover, compared to other plants or trees, jute has an amazing capacity to absorb CO2 and release oxygen into the atmosphere.
Conclusion
Jute bags are your pathway to reducing your carbon footprint during shopping. Replacing plastic bags with juco shopping bags may seem a minute change, but it can go a long way in reducing the overall impact on the earth. Make a sustainable choice today for a sustainable future.

That Reusable E.Leclerc's Bag? It’s Rescuing an Indian Industry.
Tumblr media
Jute processed into yarn at the Hukumchand mill
India’s deep-rooted jute industry has struggled for decades, undercut by cheaper synthetics. Now its bags are a sought-after biodegradable alternative.
When shoppers in places like America take a woven reusable bag to the store, they aren’t just saving the planet. They are reviving a storied industry thousands of miles away in India.
Jute, a coarse fibre used to make fabrics like burlap, has been cultivated for centuries in the warm and humid climate of the Ganges Delta. Some of India’s jute factories have been in operation for more than a century, and today the country is the world’s largest producer.
But in recent decades, the industry has struggled as less expensive synthetic substitutes have flooded the market. Farmers turned to other crops, cheap labour moved elsewhere and mills deteriorated from lack of investment.
Now, though, what had been jute’s weakness is its potential strength. As much of the world seeks biodegradable alternatives to synthetic materials like plastics, Indian jute is making its way around the planet, from supermarkets in the United States to fashion houses in France to wine producers in Italy.
“Natural is fashion now,” said Raghavendra Gupta, a top official at the Indian Jute Mills Association, a trade body in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, which is home to 70 of the country’s 93 jute mills. “There is nothing more eco-friendly than jute.”
Much of the hope for a revival of India’s jute industry rests on bans on single-use plastics that dozens of countries, including India, have enacted in recent years.
For years, the industry mostly produced burlap sacks to hold rice and other grains, supported by government mandates. Now it is pushing to branch out into decorative fabrics, floor coverings, curtains and — most significantly — reusable shopping bags.
The global jute bag market is expected to grow from $2.3 billion in 2021 to $3.38 billion in 2026, Mr. Gupta said. Shopping bags accounted for a quarter of the roughly $400 million in jute products that India exported in 2021, and over the past five years, the country’s jute bag exports had more than tripled, Mr. Gupta said.
The United States is by far the largest export market for all Indian jute products, growing by 25.5 percent last year to almost $100 million.
“The bags are pulling this industry out of sleep,” said Varun Agarwala, the executive director of Ballyfabs International[1], a manufacturer in Kolkata[2]. “They are called a bag for life: affordable, robust and environmentally friendly.”
On a recent morning, hundreds of workers, heads down, stitched bags made of jute and cotton inside the Ballyfabs factory in the Howrah district[3] of the eastern state of West Bengal. The company exports jute bags to over 50 countries on five continents. Its customers include Trader Joe’s[4] and E.Leclerc[5], a French supermarket chain.
Mr. Agarwala said that after his company had invested in updated machinery and robotic printing, a worker who once made 100 bags a day could now make 500 to meet demand. After an expansion in May, the company now has the capacity to produce 75 million bags per year.
Ballyfabs’s efforts are part of a modernisation push by the industry and the Indian government. In recent years, the government has created several programs to help farmers improve production and companies purchase more modern machinery.
Diversifying the industry’s products will help it open export markets and slowly decrease its dependence on the government as a major customer, experts said.
“Starting from seed technology, skill upgrading, mill machinery up to fibre production, we are improving everything,” said Gouranga Kar, the head of the government-run Central Research Institute for Jute and Allied Fibres,[6] “and that has led to our exports doubling in the last two years.”
Almost all of the world’s jute is produced in West Bengal and in Bangladesh. When the Indian subcontinent was divided by the British in 1947 and Bengal was split into two regions, the new borders separated jute factories in India from fields in what would become Bangladesh.
Over the decades that followed, raw jute cultivation started picking up in West Bengal and a few other Indian states. The industry flourished along the Hooghly River in West Bengal, where the first jute factory had been established by a British businessman in 1855.
By the 1980s, though, many factories had shut their gates as the jute market was eroded by plastics. To sustain the livelihood of more than four million farmers and tens of thousands of mill workers, the Indian government ordered that all grains and 20 percent of sugar be packed in coarse sacks.
Now, as the industry seeks a wider consumer base, companies are experimenting with the design, style and shape of jute bags, producing smaller souvenir bags for stores and hotels and larger bags for fashion houses and supermarkets. They are also making new textiles by mixing cotton with jute.
Jute is more durable than cotton, needs fewer resources for its cultivation and has a shorter growing time. To many, it has a rough aesthetic appeal. And cheap labour keeps its costs down.
Tumblr media
Jute has been cultivated for centuries in the warm and humid climate of India’s Ganges Delta.
Jute also provides a longer stream of income to farmers because they can first sell its leaves as a vegetable. Later, its inner stem is used to manufacture paper, while the outer layer produces fibre. The leftover sticks are used to make charcoal and gunpowder. The plant also absorbs carbon dioxide at a high rate.
The Indian jute industry has faced a worker shortage as educational levels rise in Bihar[7], Uttar Pradesh[8] and Odisha[9], poor states where jute factories have traditionally drawn most of their labour. And the factories, with their noisy machines, have had a hard time luring younger workers.
On a recent afternoon, workers lined up outside one of the biggest jute factories in Asia, the Hukumchand Jute Mill[10] in southern West Bengal. The mill operates 24 hours a day, and the machines stop only during 10 holidays each year.
Inside, migrant workers offloaded jute bundles from trucks. Within seconds, they started cutting off the sticks’ hard roots to feed the raw material into a line of machines. Soon after, another group of workers fed the fibre into spreader machines, where an emulsion was applied.
A few yards ahead, machines threw out big rolls of jute. A drawing machine later fed the jute into spinning frames, where it was spun into yarn. After a winding and beaming process, the yarn was transformed into fabric in the loom. It was then cut to the required size, and the resulting bags were later printed, bundled and prepared for dispatch.
To reduce the worker shortage, the industry will have to draw more women, said Samir Kumar Chandra, a top official at Hukumchand Mills. While female workers have a higher output, Mr. Chandra said, the industry has long been inhospitable to them because of unequal wages and inadequate facilities for women, among other issues. But companies are now offering better benefits to women, and the number of female workers is slowly increasing.
At the other end of the process, the lives of tens of thousands of farmers engaged in raw jute cultivation have improved significantly in recent years, said Shabnum Kineer, a folk singer and farmer.
Ms. Kineer said that after working for a decade with jute, she had become quite knowledgeable about its cultivation and harvesting. She now advises farmers on how to maximize production of jute, which is planted each year between the two rice seasons.
“When they listen to me, I feel proud about it and people respect me,” said Ms. Kineer, who is transgender, a group often shunned and abused in India. “And in the last decade, my income has also tripled.”
