just curious, have you read binti by nnedi okorafor? i’m a bit reminded of her worldbuilding style when i read your star trek fics, if that makes sense
when i saw this i had not read binti by nnedi okorafor but now i have!! and it was beautiful and i really found the world-building fascinating as well as the rest of the story. and i have to thank you so much for bringing these stories to my attention!
i'm not going to claim that my star trek fics are like this bc that is so deeply flattering that i can only shy away from it (how is someone supposed to react to a part of their writing being compared to a quality of an award winning novella--i can't accept that fully but oh wow thank you so much), but i will say that there are details in okorafor's story that appeal to me and drag my interest and inspire me to want to write more. and i think if wanted to try to boil down what these details are it'd come out to something like: physical reality is more creative than the general narrative of physics supposes.
(apologies for how long this got--i am incapable of stopping once i start)
obviously the word "creative" invokes something like a designer, someone who put it all together. and i definitely don't believe in god but i also think that "god" serves as a interpretive interlocutor between how people expect physical reality to be and how it's beyond us--at least to people who aren't consistently enmeshed in theoretical physics or any other field/area of science that engages more with abstraction than materiality. and i love how okorafor takes the aesthetics of spirituality and extends that to tech. how she collapses the space between tech and art:
Tumblr media
[...]
Tumblr media
okorafor even invokes "god" multiple times, all in relation to the himba people that binti is a part of. and the way she reworks the theme of "innovation" is the expression of "god" in tech--creativity in material realities:
Tumblr media
even just the suggestion that innovation and technology can be "small, private" and for "traveling inward" to explore the universe is fascinating enough--then she adds on this idea of "treeing"--of meditating so deeply on mathematics that physical parts of the world can "harmonize" with other parts through that power of mind and noticing and "inward" travel. it's wonderful.
Tumblr media
she then has mathematics and harmonizing language with this conceit of "information" being found in certain material and how that material can be the medium of communication:
Tumblr media
[...]
Tumblr media
and that's not even getting to the way the red clay functions in the story and as a part of the world. the clay has information, data, and healing purpose, but the first time binti is asked to explain it to one of the meduse she says:
Tumblr media
so all of this adds up to binti being in the right place and the right time in order to return what was stolen and save lives--when she says she's a master harmonizer, it's a layered claim in the story: she can create astrolabes, she can communicate with her edan--very old tech, she can physically communicate from her people to the meduse with the otjize she kept with her as she traveled outward in the universe, and she can use language.
Tumblr media
[...]
Tumblr media
i tend to be more interested in language as a physical gesture. as a thing that is wholly reliant on the body. i've always been more drawn to phonetics than semantics, and all the potentially significant ways a body can express itself. i just like meter and sound and gesture etc. obviously that's a part of how okorafor engages with "language" in this story but largely "language" arrives through mathematics--through something as abstract and rational and creative as mathematics--through a practice with "getting closer to 'god.'" and that's so beautiful in terms of the idea of "harmonizing," implying a peace and understanding between conscious beings that always exists so long as someone can tap into it.
binti's role in the story reminded me a little of the narrative/cultural role of the "peaceweaver" in early medieval poetry/culture. the sort of diplomatic conceit behind marriages of daughters to neighboring kings, but instilled in the actual person of the daughter/new wife, the woman who is now "weaving" peace through her ties to both kingdoms. binti of course isn't acting as diplomat through this cultural custom (the politics of medieval power structures are not really there to cause this role to exist to begin with) but the word "peaceweaver" is a word that suggests a creative engagement in material reality. she is weaving material together, she is weaving people together; the word poetically collapses the space between her abilities in a feminine craft and her abilities in her political role. and there's something like that happening with binti's "harmonizing"--her role as "harmonizer."
Tumblr media
[...]
Tumblr media
so despite the fact that the conceit of "language" is depicted as something that is an abstract truth that can be accessed, okorafor is still arguing that "communication" is a product of the person. so long as the person is not barrier-ed or diminished. so long as that person has always been able to communicate their self to the world around them, in such a way that the person does not keep that self apart from the world. "treeing"--engaging with fractals, self-similar mathematical patterns in perpetuity--being both the accessing of material truth and "god"--allowing for treating with other people. between people. with a result of cultural harmony.
Tumblr media
with binti's edan i was reminded also of the golden compass in his dark materials. pullman depicts the compass as a piece of tech more than a piece of magic, even if magic definitely exists in-universe. and the way lyra has a special relationship to this tech, then looses it, then decided to figure the relationship out the hard way: binti's relationship with the edan is very like this but also okorafor writes it so that binti has already done the hard work of figuring out the tech, with her studies and meditation throughout her life (practices of her people), and by the end of the story she just needs to understand her understanding. and there's something about the fact that she is using "god" instead of fully rejecting it, as the story demands lyra does, because the relationship one can have to an object, a piece of tech, can be personal--and the personal is necessarily spiritual (the emergent property of self-consciousness, implementing an abstract meaning on that which might not inherently contain it--the "to be" rather than "not to be").
and the way binti's body is warped at the end of the story, changing her relationship to everything around her, mirrors the way she has carried her people's clay with her as communicative tool and personal expression and cultural honoring of her land and family and loved ones. she is still looking inward for the universe, it's just now the universe has become a part of her body.
anyway i was deeply interested in this story because i the speculative/sci-fi question that has most attracted me is the question of how biology and culture interact and how that interaction can produce something like technology or progress. it's an eco-critical question at the core because it's a question of how to be in the world and of the world while still not limiting the creativity that is as natural to our mind as any other part of the human body. it's how i read something like this novella as well as something like sir gawain and the green knight. it's like: when you're studying any aspect of biology, there's a tendency to see the description of, say, cellular respiration, and think, even unspoken, "who the hell came up with this. this is so impossibly complex. how does it even work??"
and the answer is "it works because that's how matter works. it works because that is how matter is. it works because it was inevitable for matter to behave this way in the conditions created because matter behaves this way and that is what is and that is it."
and so the "creativity" in that reality is not so much authored as it is the ongoing process of everything. trying to interpret and apply a culture that respects that is like...the project of climate activism, i guess. but maybe i'm getting to far into the umbrella Issue here. i just wanted to say that i loved this novella and i'm so so flattered by what you said and i find world-building details like the one's okorafor wrote to be fascinating and inspirational! <3333

Weekly Reading Update (01/29/24)
Tumblr media
Reviews and thoughts under the cut
The Realms of the Gods by Tamora Pierce (9/10)
This concludes my reread of the Immortals Quartet! I'd probably place this series as my second favorite of the Tortall books; I feel like it gets overlooked, which is quite unfair because Daine's magic is just so interesting. This particular book completes the story very well, and it also involves the main romantic pairing getting together, which I enjoyed far more than I thought. Things fell into place a little too easily for my tastes, but it's overall a very good conclusion.
Year of the Reaper by Makiia Lucier (8/10)
This book started off very slow, so I wasn’t sure if I would like it. However, once we got into the meat of the story, I enjoyed it! I think there’s a particularly good plot twist in this one, and I actually really liked the main character. He feels like if the typical, tortured YA love interest were the protagonist instead, and seeing him be a little foolish or impulsive was refreshing. Like I said, it takes a while to get into it, I wasn’t even sure what the main plot was going to be for a while, but it’s pretty well-paced after that.
The Past Is Red by Catherynne M. Valente (9/10)
This was an incredibly intriguing novella about waste and global warming. It's a bit shocking and unique with the plethora of cursing and a very unreliable narrator. After I finished this book I felt hollow inside, and it makes you think about the issues of pollution and what it could mean for the future, especially the people who will live then and don't deserve that kind of world. The main character and narrator, Tetley, has a very distinctive voice, and she will often admit to lying to the reader about various things. The only thing I disliked was that at some points it felt like Tetley was going through terrible things just to make her go through terrible things.
Crystal Dark by Julie E. Kramer (2/10)
This is the lowest I have ever rated a book I finished. This is a YA fantasy romance novella, and it is self-published. It shows. I truly believe absolutely no editing went into this book. Most of the writing is either overly simplistic or worded in the most convoluted, backwards way that I simply could not tell what the author meant. There are basic grammar mistakes, typos, and a major side character's name is misspelled at one point. The plot is rushed to the extreme and makes absolutely no sense; why Ceia wouldn't use her magic to flee from an incredibly dangerous situation is never explained. The romance, if you could call it that, is forced and has no build-up, and the "villain" is so cartoonishly evil and defeated with a flick of the main character's hand. There is no explanation for the worldbuilding, and things are just spontaneously introduced to make sure the protagonists always have what they need. It is lazy, poorly constructed, and I can't believe someone put this into the world in this state.
The Absinthe Underground by Jamie Paction (6/10)
Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed by this book. It has a great premise, the aesthetics really come through, and it's got a cute sapphic romance. The execution falls short with just the lack of space for the story. Things happen far too quickly when there are many scenes that really need space to breathe. It affects the tension and doesn't give much room for the side characters to show their personalities. The writing tends to tell instead of show, which may contribute to the rushed nature of this book. This book could have been quite good, but it ends up being somewhat mediocre.
Remote Control by Nnedi Okorafor (36%)
The last Nnedi Okorafor book I read was Binti, which I wasn't a huge fan of, but I'm liking this one a lot more. Sankofa is a very intriguing protagonist, and I'm very interested to see where the story is going. It seems to skirt the line between fantasy and sci-fi, especially when it comes to Sankofa's backstory. This book is a whole 100 pages longer than Binti, and I think it's much better for it.
Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman (30%)
I'm really enjoying this so far. The way of storytelling, told through mission reports, chat records, and not-Wikipedia pages is very interesting and utilizes all kinds of unconventional, visual methods. There's some great humor in it too; the characters definitely feel like teenagers.
Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas (19%)
I've been pretty lukewarm on Throne of Glass for the most part. I hear this book is where most people really start to like the series, so I hope it's the same for me. I will say it's moving at a good pace so far, and I really like where the plot is going. The rescue mission angle brings a lot of suspense, especially since it's a character I actually care about. On the other side, Chaol is being so annoying and it makes his perspective drag for me.

📍 TAMARIND SQUARE, CYBERJAYA
Tamarind Square is a business park in Cyberjaya, Selangor. This place is very popular as it is known as aesthetic park since it’s full with greeny trees. The park is such a great place to take pictures for your Instagram. 😉
I went to Tamarind Square twice with my aunt. It has Supermarket and many cafes there. By cafes, I meant those ‘hipster’ cafes if you were wondering. I just think the cafes that I went to is just ‘Instagrammable’ and not a good place if you want to find and eat good food. I had to go back and explore more cafes there that has good food.
Anyways, don’t you forget to wear pretty outfits before coming here! Taking pictures at the park is a MUST.

FEATURE: They Never Go Out of Style: Y2K Fashion Trends, Nagbabalik

Interview with Sayada Ramdial
We’re back at it again with interviews, this time with the wonderful Sayada! Her illustrations are full of personality and color-- traits that dance beautifully together as the artist reliably captures her subject. It doesn’t matter what the concept or topic is, because a client would always be able to trust that Sayada can execute and personify anything. This trait also makes her an invaluable contributor to Square Carousel, since our challenges can vary wildly from month to month. And she has some very wise words, to-boot, so keep reading below for more!
Tumblr media
An untitled editorial piece Q: Looking through your portfolio of work, I feel like you could successfully illustrate just about any subject I could possibly conjure! Food, people, houses, forests, animals, fantastic or imaginary things... you have a strong grasp on all of it. Was it a conscious choice, to be so versatile? And how do you manage to keep it all cohesive?  A: Thanks so much, that's so sweet! No, I wouldn't say it was a conscious choice, it just comes out of necessity. If I need to draw something, I'll usually figure out how to do it rather than figure out how to avoid drawing the thing that may be challenging. As for keeping it cohesive, I'm not really sure! All I can consciously do is stick to the same brushes and color palette as the rest of the body of work it belongs to. I feel like 'style' is just the accent your hand speaks with when translating what's in your brain.  Q: I absolutely love that metaphor! It rings very true for me, too. Now, explain your process for us, from start to finish.  A: If it's for a specific assignment, I'll read through the brief or any of the materials given, and highlight the parts I think are important or that I may want to pull from when illustrating. Then I'll start thumbnailing for each of the illustrations, looking up reference as needed. Then I'll send thumbnails to the client to see if they have a preference or notes, after which I'll do a larger sketch per illustration and send that off for approval. Then the fun part- inking and coloring digitally in Photoshop! I do inks first, then flat colors, then shadows on another layer, then any other details like highlights and texture on other layers. Once the finished artwork's approved, the process is complete!
Tumblr media
"Into the Jungle”  Q: I see that you also enjoy making repeat patterns. Do you carry the same methods and concept over to this type of work, as well?  A: With repeat patterns, it's a lot less structured since the composition is more nebulous. I never really do thumbnails or even sketches when I do my patterns (probably because it's all been personal projects). If it's in Photoshop, I'll illustrate the objects and then copy and flatten them, so that I can move around the elements and place them in ways that work visually and make for a good and seamless repeat. In Illustrator, it's a similar process, but with groupings instead of flattened image elements.
Tumblr media
“Bananarama”  Q: Tell me about your dream job.  A: I would love to do illustrations for food packaging. Fancy delicious chocolate companies- hit me up and include a lifetime's supply of your product in the contract please!
Tumblr media
“Camembert Wedge with Apple and Sesame Crackers”  Q: What is the best piece of advice you've ever received?  A:  Some general advice that I've seen that I fully agree with: Foster relationships with your peers and support each other. Because trying to be friends with your heroes, or stoking jealousy of others' successes? That's just a waste of time. Build your own community and uplift each other as you all become more successful. Some less general advice: Avoid accidental tangents.
Tumblr media
“Green Honeycreeper on Acerola Branch” Q: I feel like that advice is so relevant today, in the world of Instagram celebrity and constant comparison. I’m so glad to have you as a peer, Sayada! Does your life and history influence any of your selected subject matter? If so, how?  A: I think for any artist this is unavoidable, whether it's intentional or not. For me, being a Caribbean woman I think has definitely influenced my aesthetic. I love using vibrant colors, drawing a variety of people instead of sticking mostly to a certain race or body type, and drawing nature, all of which I can trace directly to the environment that formed me.  Q: What do you enjoy most about being an illustrator?  A: Aside from being able to draw for a living, the flexible schedule is often a great thing.
Tumblr media
Sayada’s workspace  Q: What's your recent reading list look like?  A: The GAG Handbook and embarrassingly little else. The last books I read though, was Binti, as well as the Hilda and the Troll- both of which I recommend!  Q: If you had to choose between the ability to time travel or teleportation, which would you choose and why?  A: Teleportation, 100%! I live too far away from too many loved ones. I'd love to be able to visit everyone anytime I want, and without having to deal with airports too! I think time travel would be too risky in many ways. (I'm boring.)  Q: Cats or dogs?  A: I'm a Dog Person™, but I do love my roommate's cat too.
Tumblr media
Sayada herself!  Q: Anything else you would like the readers to know?  A: I've been extremely lucky to be where I am today. Even if I still haven't “made it”, the fact that I'm still able to pursue this career path is a privilege for which I'll always be grateful. Also, if you're an art director, Hi, I'm available for work! You heard the woman! If you’re looking for the perfect illustrator to hire (or just appreciate excellent artwork) check out her portfolio here.

Binti review
Tumblr media
Rating: ★★★½☆
Blurb: Binti is the first of the Himba people to be offered a place at Oomza University, a college in outer space. Accepting means giving up her place in her family, but Binti is willing to pay the cost. Her journey to the stars is interrupted by the Meduse, an alien race that has become the stuff of nightmares, warring against Oomza University and its students. If Binti hopes to survive this war not of her making, she will need the gifts of her people to broker peace.
I enjoyed all the weird, futuristic elements of Binti, and I think it hit the right balance of explaining the things that had to be explained as much as possible without cluttering up the novella. I love that the spaceships are giant living creatures! I would probably enjoy a longer novel by Nnedi Okorafor that delves deeper into her vision of the future.
However, within this shorter framework, I didn't feel as hooked by the plot as I did by the ideas and aesthetic behind it. It took me a while in the beginning to warm up to Binti's voice (which is less acceptable in a book like this, where 20 pages are 20% of the book). But in the end I think the way Binti's lack of experience with the outside world combined with her intelligence made her a very interesting character.
A big pro is how Binti's Himba traditions are essential to the story. It literally could not be the same plot if she wasn't Himba. I love when books take the little aspects of a character's minority identity and make them a linchpin of the story rather than a passing detail. While Binti faces prejudice within the story, her heritage is never a weakness, and the way it's worked in is really great.
So while Binti hovers between 3 and 4 stars for me, I think it's definitely worth reading because it's so short that there's no time wasted even if you don't love it, and it's an interesting novella. I may not continue with the other Binti books, but I will definitely try another of Nnedi Okorafor's books in the future, like Akata Witch or Who Fears Death.

Problematic:
Putri Norizah (1991) Bruneian / Malaysian - singer-songwriter. - Supported the 2019 new laws in Brunei that targets LGBTQQIP2SAA+ people with punishments up to the death penalty as well as other harsh laws that target women, ethnic minorities, and religious minorities in Brunei (the punishment of death penalty for those with same-sex attraction and those who commit adultery have been overturned but many these harsh laws that criminalize these things still exist and nevertheless, she vocalized support whilst the punishment was still the death penalty).
