I saw the first episode of Bleach Thousand Year Blood War at NYCC and it was great. (Mostly Spoiler Free)

Saturday was a great day for me as a Bleach Fan as I and several hundred people got to watch the triumphant return of Bleach to the screen after nearly a decade being off the air. And it was incredible.

The setup was incredible. We got to see many fans who put a lot of work into their Bleach Cosplay. We got confirmation on the four Bleach movies coming out in one box set. And Masakazu Morita, the voice of our protagonist Ichigo Kurosaki, had a message thanking the fans and counting down the episode, ending it with his signature BAN-KAI.It was a great experience.

So this takes place between chapters 480 to 484.

The Animation - The most noticeable change is the animation. Seeing the episode is like creating a beloved classic video game in the Unreal Engine. The color gradient was incredible. The voice sync was great. The particle effects were on point. But most importantly, it is not shy on the blood. The injuries are there and unflinching. The blood is bloody.

The Voice - Morita hasn’t lost his touch in 10 years. He and the rest of the crew have had great practice lending their voices to Bleach Brave Souls. The only change has been to Yamamoto’s voice. His voice actor, Masaaki Tsukada, had passed away. But his replacement, Binbin Takaoka who has been voicing the Captain Commander in Brave Souls, was so in line with Yamamoto’s gravely voice that there’s hardly a discontinuation. And Yhwach’s voice at the end of the episode? Goosebumps

The Setup - We begin in Mayuri’s lab as they are explaining the disappearance of Hollows. Afterwards, we finally come back to Karakura Town, where we are set up to meet our main group. Ichigo, Orihime, Chad, and Uryu are given glamor shots and reminders of what they can do against a battalion of Hollows

The Music - If Tite Kubo’s art is the heart of the anime, then Shiro Sagisu’s music is the soul. He knows exactly the kind of music we need. The Sternritter song from the second trailer makes its official debut in the episode. But the remake of Ichigo’s theme “Number One” is played throughout the reintroduction to our main group. The cheering was loud throughout this scene. We were so pumped.

Final Thoughts

Tomorrow, The Thousand Year Blood War will make its worldwide premiere. Bleach Fans will be eating good for the next few months.

Saga of Tanya the Evil Blitzes Japanese Cinemas in February of 2019
