"The best fantasy audiobooks for adults sweep readers away with deft narration. I cannot recommend them more for fun listening.
Audiobook sales have skyrocketed over the last five years. As of 2023, audiobook revenue grew to $2 billion, continuing the trend of growth in the space. With the rising accessibility and affordability of audiobooks through apps like Libby and Hoopla, as well as the growing collection of audiobooks on paid platforms like Spotify, Audible, Libro.fm, and Audiobooks.com, it’s unsurprising. It has never been easier to listen to your favorite books.
There is nothing better than listening to heroes conquering proverbial or actual dragons in fantasy worlds. Or, better yet, listening to those dragons get vengeance because they were never the bad guys in the first place. Whatever the story, a good audiobook can completely change its reception.
It’s important to point out that what makes a good fantasy book does not always make a good fantasy audiobook. So, I took into account how the narrator or narrators sounded at regular speed as well as 2x, 3x, etc. Sometimes a narrator sounds excellent, and then you want to get through the chapters a bit faster and realize you cannot understand them at all in 2x. I also took accessibility into account so all the fantasy audiobooks for adults included in this list can be found on Spotify Premium, Libro.fm, Audible, and Audiobooks.com."

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: Babel, (or The Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators' Revolution) by R.F. Kuang, Narrated by Chris Lew Kum Hoi & Billie Fulford-Brown
I have finished my review of #Babel by @kuangrf (courtesy of #NetGalley)- what an absolute delight!
4.75 🌟 (rounded to 5) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 5 out of 5. PLOT: This book focuses on our main character, Robin Swift, who is taken from his homeland of Canton as a child after his mother’s death by a mysterious scholar named Prof Lovell to study languages. With nothing to lose, his situation appears to be an improvement on the poverty he experienced back home – but it quickly becomes apparent how…

Books read in September
Babel, Or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators' Revolution R.F. Kuang 🎵 read by Chris Lew Kum and Billie Fulford-Brown I loved this book so much that the second I finished listening to it from the library I went and bought a paperback copy. Magic schools and anti-colonialism, what's not to love? Everyone should read this book.
The Faceless Old Woman Who Secretly Lives in Your Home Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor 🎵 read by Mara Wilson A tragic meditation on revenge. I love that they were able to give us her backstory in detail while still allowing the Faceless Old Woman to remain mysterious.
How Rory Thorne Destroyed the Multiverse K. Eason 🎵 read by Nicole Poole An interesting twist on classic fairy tales. It is the fifth multiversal fairy tale novel I've read this year, and the only one purposefully chosen for that unintentional theme.
Lords and Ladies Terry Pratchett 📖 I always enjoy a Discworld Witches book. Probably would be funnier if I was better versed in Shakespeare. Also a multiversal fairy tale novel.
Paved Paradise: How Parking Explains the World Henry Grabar 🎵 read by Rob Shapiro Let's get rid of free parking and street parking!

My media this week (27 Oct-2 Nov 2024)
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
😊 The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh (Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney #3) (Claudia Gray, author; Billie Fulford-Brown, narrator) - A really enjoyable cozy mystery in this austenverse. I did genuinely want to keep reading to find out the solution. However, I'm finding the will they/won't they/miscommunication/misunderstanding BS about Juliet & Jonathan's relationship is really starting to grate, even though the reasons for all the non/miscommunications are marginally reasonable & in character. But I was still quite annoyed with it, and I think I might be over this series for it. By the end at least J&J had talked and are on the same page about their feelings - now the obstacles are external at least, which gives me a bit more patience with it? probably my annoyance will be faded by the time the next one is published & I'll be happy to pick it up again.
😍 A Year in the Life of Sarge's Person (BlueSimplicity) - 189K, incredible post-WS recovery fic - loved how Bucky-focused this was (steve doesn't even appear until like 2/3 of the way thru the fic), loved his found family and of course I loved Sarge. Instant forever fave, stayed up until 2am reading which at my age is no small thing.
🙂 Specks of Silver (vanderloo) - 82K, lightly magical Suits fic- liked the 'small magic' style of this world
🥰 King & Queen (RELIC #3) (Maz Maddox, author; Kirt Graves, narrator) - dino shifters AND drag queens!!!! dino shifters AS drag queens! so much fun!
💖💖 +108K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
an outlier that should not be counted (dadvans) - 9-1-1: bucktommy, 7K - fluffy, cute, very 🥰
Conquest (the_deep_magic) - The Eagle of the Ninth: marcus/esca, 7K - 🔥🔥🔥
Let Me Be Your Porch Light, Baby (AidaRonan) - Stranger Things: steddie, 7K - fuck yes mothman! here for all the monsterfucking!
A Dream Through Open Eyes (neapeaikea) - 9-1-1: bucktommy, 16K - cute, cute, cute!!! love a teacher!Buck AU

Reading This Week 2024 #37
Hello hello, audiobooks and comics for my reading this week, huzzah (i am sleepy and getting to writing this late, expect only short comments)
Finished:
Babel by R.F. Kuang, audiobook read by Chris Lew Kum Hoi and Billie Fulford-Brown i think most of my opinions on this book are in last week's post or my friend's DMs. interesting turn for the ending which sorta commits in a way i didn't expect
Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie, audiobook read by Adjoa Andoh been meaning to read this for ages and ages and i had such a good time. the gendering of people in the narrative voice of this is a great touch. am i right in thinking of that as a response to like, gendered language in The Left Hand of Darkness?
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll, audiobook read by Katie Leung read for my beloved friend rey so i could understand its alice in wonderland love
A Single Man by Christopher Isherwood, audiobook read by Simon Prebble read for an upcoming queer lit book club. kinda bored of it, except for the mcs sorta-crush on his student that leads to him like. offering his house as a getaway for the dude and his girlfriend?
Something That May Shock and Discredit You by Daniel M. Lavery, audiobook read by the author i posted my opinion on this yesterday but: if you have ever liked a tumblr post that quotes this book, just please go read the whole thing. its a trans memoir for people fed up with the formula of trans memoirs
The Wicked + the Divine: The Faust Act written by Kieron Gillen, art by Jamie McKelvie i've liked some of Gillen's other work so i'm checking this out. i've been meaning to for ages
Bloom Into You, Vol. 4 by Nakatani Nio, translated by Jenny McKeon oh my godddd the teenage horniess. what a series
Started/Ongoing:
Bury Me When I'm Dead by Cheryl A. Head ages ago i asked for mystery/detective stories that didn't star cops and i'm starting to check out that list. might not continue this bc the audiobook isn't grabbing or intriguing me that much, which is wild bc it starts with the protagonist being kidnapped
The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler part of the aforementioned list. its shorter than bury me when i'm dead so i've sunk a bit more listening into it, but tbh the publishing-era typical misogyny is really off putting to me
Squire written by Nadia Shammas and Sara Alfageeh, art by Sara Alfageeh really gorgeous YA graphic novel that i am Eating Up. very excited to continue with it

[Free Audiobooks] Beyond Magenta: Transgender Teens Speak Out by Susan Kuklin & Loveless by Alice Oseman [Award-Winning YA LGBTQ+ Interviews & Coming of Age Novel]
The annual SYNC Summer of Listening program encouraging literacy among teens by giving away a themed weekly pair of audiobooks—1 modern or non-fiction, 1 classic or drama—returns for another year, courtesy of sponsor AudioFile Magazine and participating publishers.
This 9th week's theme is “Celebrating the Rainbow Spectrum”, with stories about people of various different genders and sexual orientations, available from Thursday June 22nd through Wednesday June 28th:
Beyond Magenta: Transgender Teens Speak Out by Susan Kuklin, read by a full cast, from Brilliance Audio/Candlewick. This is a non-fiction narrative pieced together from interviews with six transgender and non-binary teens about their lives and identities before and after coming out and transitioning. The book won three awards according to its Wikipedia entry, including the Lambda Literary Award, as well as being a finalist or selection for several other honours, and frequently appearing on challenged and banned books lists.
Loveless by Alice Oseman, read by Billie Fulford-Brown and others from Scholastic Audiobooks. This is a standalone YA contemporary coming of age novel starring a sheltered teen with no previous dating experience heading off to begin university, and finally exploring her feelings and the possibility of an asexual/aromantic identity as she makes friends and learns about the various forms of love, platonic, romantic, and otherwise. The book was a recipient of The Bookseller Awards' YA Book of the Year.
The freebies are available via Overdrive's Sora service (listenable via browser on their website, or via their mobile app for iOS & Android devices). To claim them, you'll need to register on the SYNC website with a valid email address to use in a Sora account, using the setup code and directions in the instructions in SYNC's FAQ (no need to re-register if you've participated in previous years' giveaways), clicking “Borrow” to add them to your Sora library as a permanent loan. NB: if you need to free up space on your device later, follow the instructions in the FAQ to only “delete files” and DO NOT “Return” the title, which would remove your future access.
Offered worldwide through Wednesday June 28th until just before midnight Eastern Time, available via the Sora website and app. You can also browse AudioFile Magazine's planned season list to see what will be offered in the weeks ahead and if there's anything you'd especially like to get.

Review: Pretty Face (London Celebrities 2) and Making Up (LC 3) by Lucy Parker
Pretty Face / Lucy Parker / aBook narr. Morag Sims / Harlequin Audio / contemporary romance
Making Up / Lucy Parker / aBook narr. Billie Fulford-Brown / Harlequin Audio / contemporary romance
Lucy Parker’s London Celebrities series is a solid touchstone for contemporary romance. A large part of this success comes from the premise/external conflicts in each book, which revolve around stage or television productions (and the actors, directors, critics, makeup artists, and other personalities that make these shows run). There’s a fun “behind the scenes” feel to each novel, and some installments (Austen Playbook, Pretty Face, and Act Like) feature lovely inter-text that brings various scripts to life.
All that said, I didn’t binge-read the series when I first discovered it in July 2019 (not all the books were available at that time, obviously, but I wasn’t ravenous for the next release).
The series as a whole is extremely one-note: there’s always an “enemies lite” vibe between FMC and MMC at the start, which is thawed and/or resolved by the end of Act I, and consummated with a “one jalapeño” heat level sex scene. Parker’s focus is character development and transformation, and she makes this more dynamic by slotting it into a world few of us see firsthand. Tbh, it feels like Parker’s editor forced her to include a sex scene or two for marketing purposes, but the books would be more comfortable as women’s fiction with fade-to-black intimacy. This would set a clearer expectation for the deep exploration of familial and friend relationships, which get just as much (refreshing, excellent) attention as the core romance in each installment.
There’s no need to read these in order, so if you’re interested in checking out the series, my ranking from best to least-best (because none of them are bad):
Austen Playbook
Act Like It
Pretty Face
Headliners
Making Up
Narration throughout the series is consistently great! Morag Sims and Billie Fulford-Brown are familiar names to romance audiophiles, but if you’re new to aBooks, they’re a wonderful intro.

My media this week (3-9 Dec 2023)
just fucking spatchcocked him
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
😊 The Late Mrs. Willoughby (Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney #2) (Claudia Gray, author; Billie Fulford-Brown, narrator) - another perfectly serviceable, decently entertaining historical cozy mystery feat. Austen characters and their progeny. Plot's pretty basic but it's still cute to see Jonathan Darcy (autistic king) and Juliette Tilney (mom's adventure sense, dad's common sense) solving murders again. The 'obstacles' to their romance are typical for a series like this but still annoying [tbh in more deft hands they might be more angsty and less annoying but it is what it is]
😍 The Charming Man (Zenaidamacrouras1, author; Late_to_party_81, artist) - 65K, shrinkyclinks no powers AU - just a delightful fic with adorable art (TEXTILE ART!) - I'll let the author's summary speak for itself: "Tldr: Steve has an eventful three weeks. Longer version: Steve Rogers is quite happy with his pleasantly simple life working as a graphic designer, chatting with his best friend Sam who has the desk next to his, eating the same gluten free sandwich for lunch every day, and staring out his office window hoping to catch a glimpse of The Charming Man walking by. Unfortunately, life has a tendency to get complicated without our permission, particularly when Steve begins to suspect that a certain evil corporation is doing criminal things that decidedly grate on his nerves." Great banter/hilarious lines - even the secondary characters get great lines plus some fine quality angst.
😍 Proper English (England World #1) (KJ Charles, author; Bella Lowe, narrator) - reread, love love love. The origin story of fluffy Fen & practical Pat getting together and solving a country house murder.
😍 Think Of England (England World #2) (KJ Charles, author; Tom Carter, narrator) - reread. Another country house mystery featuring blackmail and treason being resolved by Daniel Da Silva (poet & spy) and Archie Curtis (blond viking himbo, about to have a gay awakening) with secondary but crucial support from Fen & Pat
😊 Lessons In Chemistry (Brenda) - 42K, stucky no powers college AU - I’m not often in the mood for a college AU but this hit the spot
💖💖 +46K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
Cupid's Rugby Ball (softestpunk) - The Sandman: Dreamling, 5K - h/c meet cute with instalove, as is only correct for this pairing 😆
you'll never be blue ([currently anonymous]) - The Cabots (Cat Sebastian): Peter/Caleb, 3K - "Caleb and Peter, adjusting to living together." Perfectly captured the character voices! {written for the Fic In A Box 2023 exchange, authors not yet revealed}
