We had been postponing the North Goa trip for some reason or the other long enough. In our last semester we knew that if we didn’t go this time, it isn’t going to happen for us! So, finally, in a group of five, we decided to elope to Goa for the weekend and started with North Goa.

We flew for a three-day trip, packed our bags in less than an hour and left for the North Goa journey and Places to Visit in North Goa.

Scenic beaches, thrilling water-sports, partying spots, and architectural landmarks make North Goa the best traveller’s delight. Let us now Explore some Places to visit in North Goa.

Sinquerim Beach

If you a sports lover, Sinquerim beach is all for you. At the first day of our trip to Goa, we went to Sinquerim beach, North goa for trying a few cool water sports.

We took a banana boat ride and jet skies and spent the rest of the day dipping in the water.

Activities :- Scuba Diving , Windsurfing , Water Skiing , Dolphin Sighting trips , Jet skiing , Swimming , and Paragliding.

Anjuna beach

It is clean and tidy, and you would find mostly foreign and newly married couple enjoying Cool water sports there. It is also one of the best honeymoon destinations in winter in India.

Calangute Beach

To reach Calangute beach we booked a two-tier bus and reached Panjim at 11.00 AM. It took us 40 mins to reach.

We spent that day chilling at the beach and eating Goan food in Goa at one of the beach shacks. While crabs, prawns, lobsters and all kinds of fish are a quintessential part of Goan Food in Goa, that you should try for sure in your goa trip.

Vagator Beach

Vagator Beach is approximately 21 km far from Panajim , by road there are many buses and taxi stand that will drop you at beach till now. November to March is the right time to visit the Beach because at this time in Goa the temperature did not go below 15 to 17 degrees. So , It would be nice to go this time. Vagator beach very hot during summer , you will not be able to enjoy the beach at this time. Vagator Beach is beautiful in itself.

Activities :- Jet skiing , Parasailing , Dolphin Watching , Bumper Ride and Road ride.

Ashvem Beach

The Serene Ashvem Beach in North Goa

After going through loads of work, we want to take break from our daily life. Sea beaches are so refreshing and we like to experience the cool breeze while walking along the shore. All the tiredness goes away when the waves come rolling with the cool water and touches our feet. We like to run to the sea for this wet touch of Mother Nature. Ashvem Beach in Goa is such a beautiful beach where you can relax and spend your holidays into the calm and peaceful environment. It is 30 km away from Panjim in North Goa in the Pernem Taluk. The nearby beaches are Morjim and Arambol.

Reaching there

The beach is located near Chopdem village Panchayet. Local bikes and taxis are available from Panaji which you could hire and reach there. The distance of Calangute and Ashvem beach is 20 km, and you need to take the Aguada- Salim Raod to reach the beach. The nearest airport is Dabolim Airport which is 54.6 km and the nearest railhead is Thivim station which is located at a distance of 18 km.

About Ashvem Beach

Being less crowded the beach remains clean and peaceful. The greeneries around and the line of palm trees along the beach makes the landscape look much beautiful. Most of the tourists in search of peace get to this beach and find the connection with nature. The beach is well maintained and you can avail the umbrellas and the sun beds along the shore for free. There are yoga and meditation centers too where you can have mind and body refreshing retreat. Beach Features on Ashvem Beach

During the monsoon the waves are too rude and hit the shore harshly. So it can be dangerous to go there in monsoon. And therefore during these months the nearby shops and shacks remain closed due to fewer crowds.

What to do

Walk along the beach or do some beach activities. Training facilities are there for surfing. Sit under the umbrella or have sun bath, whichever is your choice. If you want to have lunch, then go the vendors selling foods near the beach in small huts. You can bring those foods and have your lunch where ever you want. If you wish to stay overnight then there are lodging facilities in eco friendly huts built along the shore. The government has kept the place almost natural and did not hinder in the creation of nature by building concrete hotels around. Altogether, you can see that the Ashvem Beach is fully natural and this is one of the beaches in Goa where you can spend quality time with nature, doing everything in a natural way. It’s finally time to move on…After more or less 5 weeks of what I have considered an extended holiday, we have finally booked our tickets and are about to embark on the next leg of our trip…

Kerala.

It has been a dream to be able to base ourselves somewhere, hire a bike, have a regular exercise regime and to have the freedom to go anywhere and do anything. We did so much while in South Goa:

Friends

We made a new friend, Lena. A young woman from Norway with a free spirit and a big, wild heart. – Norway, we will see the northern lights you have to offer! –

We bumped into a friend from a past life! Lily. Lily and I used to live on each end of a hill on a gold course campus in Spain. We were literally inseparable for the years that we spent together. Then life of course sent our paths in other directions and we lost touch for many years. Two years ago, thanks to the wonders of social media we reconnected and it so happened that Lily was on her way home following those two years in Australia and wanted to do a spot of traveling before she returned. And so, we met up in India for a very short but well needed three-day reunion.

A bestie visited all the way from the UK. Kirsty had never been to India but braved the flight over and joined us for ten days in Palolem. We showed her as many beaches that we could, took her for a hike and even crossed the boarder into the state of Karnataka for a day. It was so nice to have a bit of home with us for a while and it was the perfect way to end our stint in Goa. – She even managed to survive the many ant invasions in our porch/kitchen! Well done Kirst hahaha! –

Adventure

We did a fair bit of exploration after basing ourselves in Palolem. We visited so many beaches, and even discovered ones that were completely untouched by tourism, trekked through the jungle to discover some waterfalls and did many a road trip. Here are some of my recommendations:

Beaches

I’ll dish out some short but useful tips for each beach and you can decide if you want to visit or not. – But all of them truly are worth a day there! –

Palolem: Lively and colourful. It has grown exponentially since our last visit. It’s known as a party beach and has really cute californian style beach huts all along the beach front.

Agonda: A bit more up market and family friendly. Huge stretch of beach. We didn’t spend a lot of time in Agonda, but there is a friggin’ amazing sunset view point on a plateau on the south end of the beach. a must see!

Patnem: We spent most of our beach days here. Smaller than Palolemand Agonda. Lots of beach front yoga spots.

Cola: Another must see. If you are taking a scooter be careful on the way down its steep and rocky but really fun. There’s a fresh water estuary you can either swim up stream or take a kayak but it’s only a short distance, maybe 10 minutes so your choice. If you go on to the south side of the beach and cross over some rocks when the tide is low then you can have a nice secluded area of beach all to yourselves.

Polem: The most southern beach before crossing the boarder into Karnataka. Small but picturesque.

Xandrem:Absolutely untouched by tourism, this beach was hard to find so if you are looking for an adventure day then take some time to find this one. It was literally like walking into the movie “The Beach”. Highly recommended!

Cabo De Rama: The beach is further North past Agonda and a bit of a drive but again one I would certainly recommend. A small slice of paradise and very quiet.

Waterfalls

We went on a hike for Brad’s birthday and were hoping to see a few waterfalls but we got lost, took a wrong turn and walked for miles with no luck until the end haha but I will recommend some below:

Mainipi: This was the one we originally wanted to find but took a wrong turn and didn’t realise until we were riding home that we went to the old hiking route. Definitely check it out it looks pretty awesome and you can also swim there!

Savari: This was the waterfall we ended up seeing and it was stunning with a small pool to dunk in at the bottom. It was refreshing to say the least!

Dudsaghar: We didn’t actually visit this waterfall but we heard a lot about it so I thought I would recommed it for those who may be interested. It’s further north than the two above near Colva, heading towards Arambol in the North of Goa.

There are literally tons of waterfalls you can go check out but if I could give you any advice it would be to go when the waters are abundant, so after the monsoon season would be best! But google search some more to go to, they are literally jaw-dropping! Netravali looks absolutely insane, the water actually drops off a cliff onto a bunch of rocks which then descends and become the waterfall that people visit. Crazy!

There is so much to do, anywhere you go. All you have to do is explore!

Tomorrow we are taking our first long-haul train. 13.5 hours all the way to Kerala. So. Excited! bye Good-Goa. You have been truly incredible. And a wonderful home away from home. But now it’ time to move on.

By Road

There are buses every hour to Anjuna from Mapusa (8 km). For tourists arriving from Mumbai, Mapusa is the jumping-off point for the northern beaches. There are frequent local buses to Panaji, which is just 18 km away. One can also hire a motorcycle or a taxi from Mapusa to reach Anjuna.

Arambol Beach

It is 50 kms from Panaji and is a unique beach in the North Goa. The beach is both rocky and sandy and at the same time much sought after. It is 16-km-long sea beach. Arambol Beach has a sweet water pond right on the shore. The beach has adequate body surfing and there are several attractive bays at walkable distance. Arambol beach in Goa, India, can be a sheer delight if a person is looking for just the sea, himself and tranquility.

How to get there

You can take one of the many buses that regularly ply between Arambol and Mapusa and Arambol and Chopdem. It takes around 40 minutes to reach Arambol from Chopdem for a distance of 12 km. On market days you can take boats to Anjuna. To move locally, hire taxis or bikes that are easily available.

Agonda Beach

It is 37 kms from Marmagoa. The beach is small, picturesque and secluded; and is much sought after for its serenity

How to get there

It is really difficult to reach Agonda Beach because it falls a bit away from the main road and no local buses ply here. It also gives an element of solitude at the beach, as you won’t find many tourists here. The best way to reach this beach is by a scooter or motors bike.

Baga Beach

Baga Beach is a small yet perfect beach located between its two equally famous cousins, Colva on one side and Calangute on the other. It is a serene place to enjoy some private moments if you don’t like the hustle and bustle of Colva or Calangute beaches. The beach is ideal for fishing with international tourists marinating in the sun and domestic visitors paddling the boat. The beach mesmerizes the tourists with its brown sand and palm groves which come fairly close to the water’s edge. On one side of beach is the Baga River offering a pleasant diversion for children and water lovers. The meeting point of the river and the sea is bordered by a group of black rocks against which the sea crashes in dramatic explosions of spray.

Calangute Beach is about ten minutes from Mapusa, and thirty minutes from the state capital, Panaji. There are frequent buses to Panaji and Mapusa from Calangute. Most buses from Panaji terminate at Calangute and a few trudge further on up to Baga. Mapusa is 8 km away from Calangute

Benaulim Beach

Benaulim is a quiet and pleasant beach lying at the end of Colva beach. The Benaulim beach is still undiscovered by the domestic tourists which further adds to its charm. Being a fishing beach, it gets fairly crowded in the evenings and on weekends. The Church of St John the Baptist is situated on a hill beyond the village and is worth a visit. On the arrival of the monsoon, Feast of St John the Baptist (Sao Joao) is celebrated as a thanksgiving on the beach. Young men wearing crowns of leaves and fruits tour the area singing for gifts.

The nearest airport is at Dabolim, which is 29 km away from Panaji and 68 km from Colva.

By Rail

The nearest railway station is at Karmali, 11 km away from Panaji. Panaji is 39 km away from Colva.

By Road

There are frequent buses from Colva running to and from Margao (also Madgaon; 6 km away) from where one can take a bus to Panaji, which is 33 km further ahead.

Cavelossim Beach

The soft white sands, the black lava rocks, beaches south of Benaulim where you explore the Cavelossim Beach. This beach is more clean and quiet than most of the famous beaches of Goa. There are numerous beach shacks offering a variety of Goan dishes and seafood at reliable rates. There are several food joints around Dona Sylvia where you can get entire package of good food, liquor and beverages, nice service, and a pleasant service at quite reasonable rates. In addition to it, there are facilities for Dolphin watching at Betty’s Place as well as boat trips for Dolphin watching at River Sal.

How to get there

There are plenty of transportation facilities available to reach these beaches from Margao. From Cavelossim village, Margao is 18 km away and buses and autos are available easily. You can also hire taxis from Dabolim Airport (41 – 48 km) to reach the beach resorts here. To move locally, use cycles and scooters that are available on hire.

Calangute Beach

It is 16 kms from the capital city Panaji and is the most popular holiday resort in Goa. It is also known as “The Queen of Beaches” and consists of excellent accommodation facilities at the tourist resorts and cottages. It is on the shores of the Arabian Sea of North Goa. The name of the beach is a distortion of the local vernacular word, ‘Koli-gutti’, which means the ‘land of fishermen’. Some connect it with ‘Kalyan-gutti’, the ‘village of art’ or ‘Konvallo-ghott’, the ‘strong pit of the coconut tree’ as the village nearby is full of coconut trees. It is believed that with the Portuguese invasion, it got distorted to Calangute. Once upon a time Calangute was the most haunted beach all hippies during Christmas celebration when psychedelic hell broke loose. The best time of the year to visit this beach is between the months of September and March.

It is 6 kms from Marmagoa. Colva is one of the most popular beaches in South Goa. This beach is the pride of ‘Salcete’ and the only rival to Calangute by its scenic splendour. In Colva sand, sea and sky blend in enchanting natural harmony. It consists of excellent accommodation facilities at the tourist cottages. It is evening and weekend days destination for the natives. While driving to Colva from Marmagoa you pass through the large Church of Our Lady of Mercy, Nossa Senhora das Merces, built in 1630 and re-built in the 18th century. It is at heart of the longest unbroken stretch of beach in Goa from Marmagoa to Cabo de Rama. Colva is pleasant and convenient place to stay giving an opportunity to swim safely.

Dona Paula Beach

It is 7 km from the state capital Panaji. Dona Paula Beach is an idyllic picturesque spot and gives a fine view of the Zuari River and Marmagoa Harbour. This is an idyllic spot to relax and sunbathe Water scootering facility is very popular at this beach. The beach is near the rocky point between the Mandovi and the Zuari. At the Dona Paula Bay, two of Goa’s famous rivers meet the Arabian Sea. The beach is named after Dona Paula de Menezes and is also called the ‘Lovers Paradise’ due to a myth attached to the place. Cabo Raj Bhavan, the official residence of the Governor of Goa is situated on the westernmost tip of Dona Paula.

The Dona Paula Beach is well connected by road. Seven kilometers from the capital city, regular bus and taxi services are easily available. The Kadamba Transport Corporation (Government of Goa Undertaking), and Maharashtra and Karnataka State Road Transport Corporations operate buses from and to Goa.

Majorda Beach

From Bogmalo to down south, there is Majorda beach bellying the Majorda Beach Resort. Majorda is the village where the Jesuits, fond as they were of the good things of life, discovered the best Goan toddy (sap from the coconut palm), which they used to leaven the bread. Naturally, then, Majorda is the place where the Goans were first trained in the delicate art of baking European breads. Threfore, the Majordans are still Goa’s best bakers. As per the Goan version of Ramayana, the Lord Rama was abducted as a child and brought up at Majorda. Later, in pursuit of Sita, he camped at Cabo de Rama-a headland further south-where the stretch of developed beaches ends.

Majorda is located at a distance of 18 km from Dabolim Airport and connected to Margao with buses, motorcycle taxis, and taxis.

Miramar Beach

It is 3 kms from Panaji. Miramar is a golden beach of soft sand girdled with palm trees facing the Arabian Sea and is nearest beach from Panaji. It is one of the most popular beaches in Goa. To watch the sunset from Panaji this beach is the best location, only fifteen minute’ walk along the Dayanand Bandodker Marg riverfront avenue. The beach is an urban beach where the Mandovi River meets the Arabian Sea. It is not a safe beach to swim because of the strong undercurrent.

Palolem Beach

It is also 37 kms from Marmagoa. The beach is situated at west of Chaudi. It is one of the most enchanting beaches, but at the same time relatively deserted. It is situated in the backdrop of Western ghats. It has 1.5 km crescent shaped beach and lies on the southern coastline of Goa amidst outstanding natural beauty. It is fast emerging as a popular spot for day-trippers from Colva and Calangute beach.

How to get there

Palolem is just 3 km away from Canacona Railway Junction, now on the Konkan Railway. You can hire taxis and auto-rickshaws to reach Palolem beach from Margao, 40 km away. There are regular buses from Margao to Palolem that would drop you at Canacona village.

Vagator Beach

The soft white sands, the black lava rocks, the coconut palms, the lush green landscape, nature playing its own tunes, and the sea turning from aquamarine to emerald green-Vagator overlooked by the 500-year-old Portuguese fort, leaves each visitor dumbstruck. Also, the world-famous Anjuna Beach lies to the south of Vagator. Vagator beach if still rich with rural life. So a large number of fishermen in their traditional attire can be observed on the beach. Anyone patient enough to listen to the numerous stories of the sea can explore their stock of stories.
