do i scare you?
âAlright, just three more shops and then I can head back.â
It was three days from the U.A. sports festival. Everyone was excited and preparing for the event, gathering cameras and new DVRs to record the matches. The mall was barely stocked, leaving a lot of people to wander around blankly in hopes of buying up whatever they needed the moment the shelf stockers opened a box.Â
Atsuko, luckily, wasnât bothered. Sheâd merely gone to pick up the things her father asked her to get. All of it items the school had put on hold. Especially new microphones since Kasumi had been asked to co-host with her father and Present Mic. Vlad King was a little bummed he didnât get to be involved, but Atsuko was glad. It meant he got to be dragged over to the nurses tent with her and her mother.Â
Looking back, she realized her family wasnât normal. For one thing, her mother and father werenât married in the traditional sense exactly. Her mother was Marianne, the current nurse and former Hero of Elspie. Sheâd been married once before to a man named Mykolas Darnell, who was her older brotherâs father. When Darnell had gone missing on a rather difficult mission, heâd been presumed dead. And since the two got married in Elspie, their marriage ended at his first assumed death. The law there was made so that one did not accidentally commit bigamy should they remarry and their âdeadâ spouse returned.Â
When Darnell was gone, Atsukoâs father stepped in to help raise Clement. Eventually, the two decided to marry. However, just like with Darnell, they got an Elspie marriage. Regardless of how strange many saw it when they learned about it, they were happy. In the end, that was all that mattered.Â
Some time later, she herself was born, and not long after that, Darnell turned up catatonic but alive and in need of constant care. His family refused to help, so he was transferred to Japan and placed in the Hall of Fame wing of the hospital. Every week, her mother and brother visited Darnell and checked up on his health. Sometimes Atsuko tagged along and both she and Marianne tried to heal him. Darnell was healed, but he could not awaken. Whatever happened on that mission, one thing was certain.
It must have been hell.
Atsuko didnât mind her familyâs odd arrangement. They were happy. And they had strong bonds and healthy lives. Thatâs all that mattered.Â
Though Atsuko would be lying if she said she didnât wish she could help her mother and brother more.Â
As she finished collecting her list of items, she noticed something strange shining on the ground near the fountains. Upon further inspection, Atsuko found the light reflecting off a small compact mirror in the shape of a shell. It was mostly in shades of blue, opalescent and smooth. It reminded her of mermaidâs treasures. The mirror was clear, reflecting her smile back at her.Â
âSo pretty...â
âU-um...â
Atsuko looked up, nearly taken aback by a pale silver stare.Â
âIâm sorry. Do I scare you?â
âNo, not at all. Iâve just never seen eyes like yours before. Theyâre really pretty.â
âThank you...â She glanced down at the compact. âThat um...â
Atsuko smiled, holding it out. âIs this yours?â
The mystery girl nodded. âYes...It is...â She gingerly took it back, holding it close to her chest. âIâm very sorry for inconveniencing you. Thank you for finding him.â
âHim?â Atsuko was intrigued. The girl had a very soft voice that was light and clear, much like the small compact she held. She didnât look from around here. Perhaps a visitor from out of the country?
âYes, itâs a him,â the girl said. âMy brother and I have similar quirks called âMirrored Eyesâ. He can use his power to trap someoneâs mind in a mirror...And I can remove them from the mirror, provided the body is nearby. And weâre the only ones who can see the image of the person trapped in the mirror.â
A chill ran down her spine. Atsuko stared at the compact, a sick twisting in her stomach. âSo...thereâs someone trapped in that mirror?â
The girl nodded. âI ran from my brother after stealing a lot of mirrors from his collection. I returned most of the ones I managed to rescue but...this one is hard to locate the owner of...He doesnât have his memories, you see...â
âHave you tried talking to a hero-â
âNo!â The girl started to panic. âIâm not here legally. I ran away from home to stop my brotherâs evil. I canât go to heroes. Theyâll send me back before I can help the man in the mirror. Then my brother will...heâll...â
âWoah, calm-hey wait!â
The girl turned and ran. Atsuko went to give chase, only for her bags to begin to split open. She hurried to gather her wares, but by the time she managed, the mystery girl had vanished. After weighing her options, she decided to call her dad to come get her immediately. Sheâd have to finish picking things up another day.Â
Right now, she needed to be at the ready, in case the mystery girl appeared again.
When her ride arrived, Atsuko was surprised to be greeted by both Vlad King and Present Mic. Both looked rather worried, quickly getting the things in the car as they also gave her the once over.
âEverything okay?â Vlad asked.Â
âYes dad,â Atsuko assured. âI just saw someone very strange today. I think sheâs in trouble.â
âSomeone in trouble?â
âYeah. She looked about between mine and Clemâs age. Black hair, sounded a bit American I think, and she had silver eyes.â
Mic sighed. âDamn. Sounds like the thief weâve been trying to track down. Sheâs been spotted all over the place. First time we heard of her in Musutafu specifically. Last call was in Hosu.â
âWeâll keep an eye out for her,â Vlad assured. âHopefully we can find her before the chaos of the sports festival.â
And with that, they all got into the car and left the mall. And all the while, Atsuko only had two thoughts on her mind.Â
What is that girlâs name? And I hope sheâs okay.
She sat alone in the abandoned apartment building, waiting for the instant ramen to finish. Ever since she came to Japan, she had been scraping by just barely. Sheâd had to do criminal things to survive; stealing from convenience stores, sneaking into shops and taking clothes that had been marked on clearance, and even going so far as to sneak into a girlsâ locker room at a gym to get showered during her first day there.Â
The trip to Musutafu city was hard on her. But she was hoping sheâd be able to find the man she was looking for.
She slowly opened the compact, smiling at the bright green eyes staring back at her. âGood evening.â
âHello Suellen,â the man greeted. âI saw the strangest girl looking at me. She wasnât you.â
Suellen nodded. âI know. She was a local.â
âDid she know where my body was?â
âNo...I donât think so at least...â She looked down, feeling guilty. âShe mentioned asking Heroes for help and I panicked. Iâm so sorry.â
The man smiled, putting a hand to the glass. âHey, itâs okay. I donât blame you for getting scared. Weâll find my body in time. And maybe Iâll figure out who I am. But you need to stay safe first, okay?â
âOkay.â
âYou managed to find a place to rest?â
âMh-hm. The family that owned this place left for vacation for the next two months and left a key under the welcome mat, so I can use it in the meantime. Iâm careful to make sure no one gets suspicious.â
âOkay. Just donât overdo it, okay?â
âOkay.â
âIâve got to rest now. Iâm keeping watch while you sleep again.â
âGot it.â She stared at him, pouting slightly. âIâm sorry...but itâs weird not being able to call you by a name...can I call you something until we learn your name? Like, um....maybe Victor? Or Alvin or something? Michael? I just...need a name.â
The man in the mirror closed his eyes, thinking carefully. âHmh...I think....Michael would be okay for now. Until we learn my real name.â
Suellen smiled. âOkay Michael. You rest up. Iâll wake you when itâs time for watch.â
With a single nod, Michael vanished from sight and the compact closed on its own. Suellen grabbed her chopsticks and prepared to enjoy her meal.Â
