As the UK Government heralds “freedom day” today, which is anything but, a prominent government scientific advisor has admitted that face masks do very little to protect from coronavirus and are basically just “comfort blankets”.

Dr Colin Axon, a SAGE advisor for the government told the London Telegraph that medics have given people a “cartoonish” view of how how microscopic viruses travel through the air, and the masks have gaps in them that are up to 5000 times bigger than Covid particles.

“The small sizes are not easily understood but an imperfect analogy would be to imagine marbles fired at builders’ scaffolding, some might hit a pole and rebound, but obviously most will fly through,” Axon said.

“Once a particle is not on a biological surface it is no longer a biomedical issue, it is simply about physics. The public has only a partial view of the story if information only comes from one type of source,” Axon continued, adding “Medics have some of the answers but not a whole view.”

Noting that the “mask debate is about the particle journey,” Axon explained that “Masks can catch droplets and sputum from a cough but what is important is that SARS CoV-2 is predominantly distributed by tiny aerosols.”

“A Covid viral particle is around 100 nanometres, material gaps in blue surgical masks are up to 1,000 times that size, cloth mask gaps can be 500,000 times the size,” Axon urged.

The professor noted that “those aerosols escape masks and will render the mask ineffective,” adding “The public were demanding something must be done, they got masks, it is just a comfort blanket. But now it is entrenched, and we are entrenching bad behaviour.”

“All around the world you can look at mask mandates and superimpose on infection rates, you cannot see that mask mandates made any effect whatsoever,” Axon further noted, adding that “The best thing you can say about any mask is that any positive effect they do have is too small to be measured.”

Axon’s comments echo those of Dr. Anthony Fauci, who wrote in February 2020 that a typical store-bought face mask “is not really effective in keeping out virus, which is small enough to pass through material.”

Fauci later reversed his position after the CDC began recommending that Americans wear face coverings. Similar recommendations were then made worldwide, with World Health Organisation officials even recommending that masks remain INDEFINTELY.

Social media networks have long censored and deleted information pertaining to the efficacy of masks, or lack thereof, despite numerous credible studies concluding that they are largely useless at stopping the spread of COVID-19.

A study in Denmark involving 6,000 participants found that “there was no statistically significant difference between those who wore masks and those who did not when it came to being infected by Covid-19,” the Spectator reported.

“1.8 per cent of those wearing masks caught Covid, compared to 2.1 per cent of the control group. As a result, it seems that any effect masks have on preventing the spread of the disease in the community is small.”

While the government says that from today masks are optional in the UK, many train companies and other businesses have said that they remain mandatory, causing widespread confusion.

Good Jesu: what will you do with my heart?’

I have always loved the writings of the Carthusians and have found them to be be both beautiful and challenging. But recently I came across a homily given on the occasion of a jubilee celebration of a priest's ordination. The homily focuses on the love and commitment of Carthusians martyred under the reign of Henry VIII, in particular St. John Houghton. It speaks not only of the beauty of the priesthood and the sacraments but also what God can accomplish in hearts open to His love and grace. It speaks of the grace that is both needed and offered when we are faced with the difficult challenges and choices of life, no matter what our particular vocation may be. The following is a rather lengthy excerpt from the homily (one that I found deeply encouraging) and I hope you enjoy it:

“The story of the Carthusian martyrs is not as well known as it should be. No doubt this is because, in the great tale of the early English Reformation, the figures of Sts John Fisher and Thomas More tower over all others, for many and obvious good reasons. And yet nobody becomes a martyr without some extraordinary qualities—tenacity, faith, holiness—that make it possible to face all the consequences of simply doing the right thing when it is required. And yet how difficult that simple thing can be, even in small matters.

The monks of the London Charterhouse (who provided most of today’s saints) were renowned for their holiness of life in the early sixteenth century. It had become fashionable to grumble about monks at that time, but nobody grumbled about them. Thomas More, who could be rather scathing about monks who were no holier than they should be, actually lived with the London Carthusians for several years, and contemplated joining them. Carthusian monks, following a somewhat different and stricter form of the Benedictine life, have as their proud boast that they have never needed reform. Theirs is, and always has been, a very silent and recollected life: The London community in the sixteenth century was led by Prior John Houghton, a relatively young man, already with a reputation for sanctity. You will understand, then, why Henry VIII was particularly keen to get him and his community on side. Being widely respected, they would lend authority to the King’s claims to the headship of the Church in England.

When presented with the King’s demands that the London Carthusians recognize his claim to the headship of the Church in England, the community took three days to pray about it, on the last of which they celebrated a Mass of the Holy Spirit. During Mass, at the elevation, the whole community actually had an experience together that they unanimously identified as the Holy Spirit breathing in the chapel, and which gave them courage for what was to come—courage they would sorely need.

John Houghton, together with two other priors from the North, went to speak to Thomas Cromwell, the King’s strong arm man in religious matters. We can be sure that with his lawyer’s training, St John tried everything to make it possible to take the oath of allegiance to the King, without, however, compromising principle. Nothing availed, however, and all three were arrested, the charge being that —and I quote — ‘John Houghton says that he cannot take the King, our Sovereign Lord to be Supreme Head of the Church of England afore the apostles of Christ’s Church’, which rather makes it sound as if the apostles had also usurped what was the King’s rightful position.

In any event, he was condemned, of course—Cromwell had had to threaten the jury with treason charges themselves in order to achieve it, and the three priors together with a Bridgettine priest and a secular priest were all dragged to execution together. St Thomas More, by now in the Tower of London, watched them from the window of his cell setting off, and commented to his daughter who was visiting that they looked just like bridegrooms going to their wedding, a comparison that St John Fisher was also to use on the morning of his own death.

King Henry was insistent that the priests should be executed in their religious habits, to teach other religious a lesson, one presumes. This meant that after St John was cut down from the gallows, still alive, to be butchered, the thick hairshirt he wore under his heavy habit had to be cut through by the executioner, who had to stab down hard with the knife. And then, finally, as the executioner drew out St John’s still beating heart before his face, he spoke his last words: ‘Good Jesu’ he said, ‘what will you do with my heart?’

‘Good Jesu, what will you do with my heart?’ These are words that can speak to us at any stage, indeed in any moment in life, because we are daily confronted with choices between good and evil, or even simply between good and better. These words place the element of choice firmly in the Lord’s loving providence, praying for his grace to help us make the right decision.

When it comes to lifetime choices, however, St John Houghton’s words become more eloquent. There are any number of ways one can give ones life for the Lord—martyrdom is only one, albeit just about the best. One can also give ones living life for Him, by living in the married state, by working in any number of vocations in the world, and, of course, by spending ones life in consecrated religious life and/or the Priesthood. I think that the key element that identifies when a job becomes a vocation is when there is an element of self-giving to it—or in other words, when there is at least an element of martyrdom.

I have always been very struck by the story of Blessed Noel Pinot, a martyr of the French Revolution, who, having been arrested when about to celebrate Mass, ascended the scaffold to the guillotine dressed in the same Mass vestments, reciting to himself the same words we said today ‘Introibo ad altare Dei’. The mother of St John Bosco said to him on his ordination day; ‘remember, son, that beginning to say Mass means beginning to suffer’. These words come home to me and strike at my conscience, but I increasingly think that I can never really be worthy of my priesthood until I pour myself more entirely into it. There is nothing worth having that does not carry its price label, and the price label for following the Lord is imitating him in all things or, as He said Himself, taking up our cross daily. The question is not what do I want (the answer to that is straightforward: I’ll have an easy life, please, involving some nice dinners in agreeable company) but what does He want. In fact, ‘Good Jesu, what will you do with my heart?’ Because whereas my little wants are rather petty and contemptible, his are wonderful beyond comprehension. And very often beyond my comprehension, anyway.

Thanks be to God that the priesthood of God’s Church does not belong to me but to Christ, that I do not exercise it, but he exercises it through me. Thanks be to God that the sacraments we offer do not depend on our worthiness but on His.

What a wonder it is that the Lord loves us at all! And yet he does, and is happy with the feeble struggle and great labour we make of bearing his sweet and gentle yoke, he rejoices as a parent does when guiding the first steps of a child or when speaking his first words. Caused by grace, these shallow twitches in our lives towards doing the Lord’s will and setting aside our own desires are no matters of mere jubilees and quarter centuries, they are the stuff of eternity leaking into time. These things are signs of the Kingdom of God, where, in eternity, eye has not seen nor ear heard what good things God prepares for those who love him. Which is why we pray with St John Houghton: ‘Good Jesu: what will you do with my heart?’”

Deadbird: The Underground Cool (and Racking) of Arc’teryx

Canadian brand Arc’teryx has endeavoured to excel in one area: outdoor apparel.

Despite its association with the best-of-the-best, industry-leading (and expensive compared to competitors) outdoor gear, the brand has been embraced, adopted, and re-contextualized by groups that Arc’teryx never ever considered designing for, namely graffiti writers, rackers, the occasional skateboarder, and lately the capital “F” fashion crowd.

Because of its logo, Arc’teryx product is often colloquially referred to as “deadbird” by some aficionados. So what has Arc’teryx done to deserve this street-level credibility?

The following is a series of interviews conducted over email, Instagram DM, Reddit, and Google Forms. Some quotes have been condensed for brevity. Arc’teryx declined to answer questions for this article.

Graffiti artist Victor Ving highlights Arc’teryx products for their utility and hardiness, telling me, “I was put on to Arc’teryx from some Pacific-Northwest friends. A graffiti writer who chose to remain anonymous told me, “Racking has been part of graffiti since the ’70s. Arc’teryx is part of the graffiti subculture, strictly because of racking. No other reason at all. Kids would rack jackets because of their high price-point and ease of selling them.” Adding additional background, they note, “The top tier at the time was The North Face Summit Series, and if you could find it, Steep Tech gear. I found a store that had these [Arc’teryx] jackets, with this sick bright blue color that no one else offered at the time. I checked the tag and it was $500. I couldn’t believe it. Even two Summit Series [jackets] weren’t close to that. I took an Alpha shell and two Gamma soft shells and that was it. It started an addiction, an appreciation and a brand loyalty that has been a part of my life ever since. Racking happens for several reasons, firstly to make money, and secondly to have the best jacket money can buy on your back, while not paying a thing for it.”

Nick Kusto is an artist who spends his time between Dublin and Berlin. Kusto mentions he is fond of products like the Sinsolo and Motus hats, as well as vintage jackets. He continues, “GORE-TEX has always been popular amongst writers, a friend of mine has it [GORE-TEX] tattooed in massive block letters across his stomach.” Kusto mentions the planning that can go into Arc’teryx heists, noting, “People travel all over Europe and Scandinavia looking for the easiest shops to steal it, renting out cars and hitting all the stores on the way. It’s easier in small towns.”

When I see another person wearing it, I always give them a head-nod and acknowledge them.” Wellington also draws comparisons between the cult appeal of Arc’teryx and the Ralph Lauren-obsessed Lo-Life crew, noting, “To me, Arc’teryx is the modern day POLO for a certain level of people. People trade loot photos among eachother, and show off their rarest pieces, always bragging about the missions that scored them the most.”

Toronto-based graphic designer Brendan G explains the practice of stealing Arc’teryx by noting, “The [GORE-TEX] Pro shells are worth up to a rack in CAD, and it’s easy money if you know what’s up. I rate it, the world is burning and we’re in a late enough stage of capitalism that I don’t give two shits if somebody steals from a large company.” Brendan also touches on the brand’s appeal off the mountain, “It’s also a high-key flex to be wearing a thousand-dollar technical jacket meant for belaying in the Himalayas on your run to the bar. Too bad it’s become mainstream enough that it’s low-key corny now, thanks Virgil and all the fakers paying retail!”

London-based Bennett gave me his first name, but preferred to remain otherwise anonymous when speaking about Arc’teryx, telling me, “Graffiti is a largely outdoor hobby, so you want good clothing to help with the elements.” Bennet also highlights the price point of Arc’teryx as a factor that sets it apart from other brands. “The gear is well made and looks good, and isn’t generally affordable to everyone. This makes it stand out against The North Face. Always GORE-TEX models, they tend to be the most expensive and therefore desirable to me.” On the topic of racking, Bennett responds, “Love it. If the clothes are there, and can be got for free, then fuck it. Take them. Save yourself some money.”

An anonymous responder from Denmark told me, “Arc’teryx is hard to steal and expensive, which makes it more popular. Also Arc’teryx is good quality. When I started racking, it was The North Face that was the top brand in the graffiti world.” They went on to note, “The best story I can share is about a shop in the city center of Copenhagen. Ricky Wilson’s 5-bed Cornwall home is for sale

The Kaiser Chiefs frontman thought his rock’n’roll days were almost over when he bought this bolthole. The band is back in the charts and he’s selling up for £1.5m, says Hugh Graham.

Ricky Wilson is all grown up. The lead singer of Kaiser Chiefs emerged in the early Noughties with the rabble-rousing hits I Predict a Riot and Ruby, and backed them up with raucous stage antics: crowdsurfing, climbing scaffolding and high kicks. (He broke both ankles at one gig.) Critics dubbed the band heirs to Madness; he even had a feud with Oasis. All very rock’n’roll. For his efforts, Kaiser Chiefs have scored seven Top 10 albums; Wilson, 42, also spent three years as a judge on the TV talent show The Voice.

Yet Stratton House, his Regency pile in Falmouth, is not very rock’n’roll at all. The five-bedroom home is done up in William Morris-esque floral wallpaper, and dotted with antiques, family heirlooms and Persian rugs. “When it comes to decor, I don’t have rock-star tendencies,” Wilson says. “I don’t have chandeliers made of saxophones or a breakfast bar made out of a Chevy. I’d rather sit in a wingback chair.”

There is one item, however, that screams rock star. In the front hall, amid the cornices and columns, is a motorcycle. “I’ve never ridden it,” the singer confesses. “I’m terrified of motorcycles. I’ve taken the test twice and failed due to my inability to turn left. But it’s a thing of beauty. It’s a replica of the one Steve McQueen had in The Great Escape. I use it to dry tea towels on.”

Wilson has embraced domesticity. He bought the house in 2012, two years after stumbling across Falmouth by accident. His Turkish holiday had been cancelled when the ash cloud from an Icelandic volcano halted his flight, so he and his girlfriend at the time got in a car and drove west.

“We found a last-minute cottage in Falmouth. I walked into town to buy some bread and milk, and I had this intense feeling that I could live here. I instantly felt comfortable. You only have those moments a few times in your life — I’m a great believer that you have to jump on those feelings.”

Stratton House captured his imagination because, he says, it’s one of the few houses in Falmouth that faces the sea, rather than the river. Wilson, who grew up in Leeds, says he’s always yearned for the sea. “In the winter, I like to close the shutters, put the fire on and listen to the ocean battering the house. I bought a telescope so I could look out to sea and feel dramatic, romantic and wistful, but it doesn’t work.”

He spent four years and £500,000 renovating the home

Living by the sea has done wonders for his mental health, too. “When I cross the border into Cornwall, I feel stress can’t reach me,” says the singer, who uses Stratton House when he’s not at home in north London. “The sea air combined with the wooden shutters helps me sleep so well. There is a direct correlation between time spent in Falmouth and not being riddled with anxiety.”

Renovating the house, though, was not easy: it took him four years and about £500,000. “It’s like being in a band,” he says. “When I started out, I did things that I couldn’t be bothered to do if I was starting out now. It’s mind-boggling that I had the passion to see it through.”

The singer favours a surprisingly trad style, including antique mirrors

He lowered the entire floor of the basement to create a two-bedroom garden flat. All the bathrooms were redone and layouts were changed. His proudest achievement is the creation of a secret door that conceals a sun room. “That was a boyhood dream, to make a bookcase that was a secret door. When you push a certain book, the bookcase swings open. Sometimes I don’t tell guests about it until day three. It comes as a real shock.”

They might be more shocked to learn that the frontman of Kaiser Chiefs has damask sofas and antique mirrors. He’s “in love” with the Shaker kitchen by a local company, Williams Creative Homes. If his house was on Through the Keyhole, he says, nobody would guess it was his. “I’m old-fashioned, I like traditional stuff. My grandmother had an antiques shop, but it was really a junk shop. I buy a lot of junk, but it’s junk that I love — eBay is a terrible thing. If I had a vice, it’d be that.”

He’s never had rock-star parties here, and mostly goes unrecognised in Falmouth, which he calls “a magnet for good people”, with an artsy university. “Kids give a place life and urgency. Unlike a lot of seaside towns, it’s not just fading away.”

A perfect day would be walking his labradoodle, Reedus, from Gyllyngvase beach to Swanpool beach, where the cafe “has the best hot chocolate in the world”. “Then I potter around. I might go to Trago Mills, this fantastic DIY store, buy a screwdriver and feel like a proper person.”

Damask sofas add to the home’s style

When Wilson bought the house, he was thinking of winding down his pop-star life. “The general consensus is that you should only be a pop star for four or five years. I had outlived my time. I was ready for a quiet life in Falmouth. Then I got my second wind and my career took off again.”

Indeed, the band’s latest album, Duck, made it to No 3, and they’re now touring. So he is selling up for £1.5m, with the estate agent Ian Lillicrap handling the sale. “Now I don’t spend any time there. It’s wasted on me. It needs to be lived in.”

Yet Wilson, who is engaged to the stylist Grace Zito, credits the house with changing his life. “It spurred me on to do things I never thought I would do. I bought a dog, which is like having a practice kid. I got a Barbour jacket. It’s, like, ‘What’s happened to me?’

It has also given him the bug for projects. He’s now looking for a house in London after selling his old home in Highgate. “I’m into finding houses that need a bit of love. And, at the risk of sounding schmaltzy, saving them for another generation. I am respectful of this house. I talk to it and ask it how it is. When I shut the door, I say goodbye to it. I treat it like a member of the family. Houses do take over your life.”

So it’s official: restoring houses is the new rock’n’roll.
