How to maintain artificial jewellery?
Artificial jewellery has become a favorite accessory for many due to its affordability, versatility, and stylish appeal. Whether you're looking for statement earrings or dainty necklaces, artificial jewellery allows you to experiment with various trends without breaking the bank. But just like any other piece of jewellery, proper care is essential to maintain its charm and shine over time. If you're wondering "How to maintain artificial jewellery?", this blog will provide you with all the essential tips to keep your jewellery looking brand new.
At Jewellery Hat, India's fastest-growing fashion jewellery brand, we specialize in stainless steel, anti-tarnish jewellery, including earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and rings. Our pieces are designed to last long and come with a lifetime replacement warranty on the polishing. In this guide, we will explore the best ways to maintain your artificial jewellery and answer the important question: "How to maintain artificial jewellery?"
Understanding the Need for Artificial Jewellery Maintenance
Artificial jewellery is crafted from a variety of materials like stainless steel, brass, copper, and alloys. While it is much more affordable than real gold or silver, it is also more prone to tarnishing, fading, or losing its luster over time. Maintaining artificial jewellery is crucial if you want to extend its lifespan and keep it looking as vibrant as the day you bought it.
One of the most common concerns among jewellery lovers is "How to maintain artificial jewellery?" The good news is that with proper care and some basic tips, you can preserve the beauty of your artificial pieces for years. Let's dive into the step-by-step guide on maintaining your jewellery.
1. Regular Cleaning: Key to Maintaining Artificial Jewellery
The first step in answering the question "How to maintain artificial jewellery?" is to clean it regularly. Over time, artificial jewellery can accumulate dirt, oils, and grime from daily wear. This buildup can dull the appearance of the jewellery and lead to tarnishing.
Cleaning Tips for Artificial Jewellery:
Use a Soft Cloth: After wearing your jewellery, wipe it down with a soft, lint-free cloth. This helps remove any sweat, oils, or makeup residue that could tarnish the metal.
Mild Soap Solution: Mix a few drops of mild liquid soap with warm water. Use a soft toothbrush or cloth to gently scrub the jewellery. Rinse it under clean water and pat it dry with a cloth. Avoid soaking your jewellery for too long as it could damage certain materials.
Avoid Harsh Cleaners: Never use harsh chemical cleaners or polishes on artificial jewellery. These can erode the protective layer and cause the metal to tarnish or discolor.
Stainless Steel Care: If your jewellery is made from stainless steel (like the pieces from Jewellery Hat), you can simply wipe them clean with a soft cloth. Stainless steel is naturally resistant to tarnish, but regular cleaning will help maintain its shine.
Regular cleaning is one of the best answers to "How to maintain artificial jewellery?" By incorporating this into your routine, your jewellery will retain its sparkle for much longer.
2. Proper Storage for Artificial Jewellery
Storing artificial jewellery correctly is another vital aspect of "How to maintain artificial jewellery?" Improper storage can lead to tarnishing, tangling, and scratches, significantly reducing the lifespan of your jewellery.
Storage Tips for Artificial Jewellery:
Use a Jewellery Box: Store your artificial jewellery in a jewellery box with compartments to prevent pieces from scratching each other. Velvet-lined boxes are ideal as they provide a soft surface for your jewellery.
Anti-Tarnish Pouches: For additional protection, store your jewellery in anti-tarnish pouches. These pouches are specifically designed to prevent tarnishing by reducing exposure to air and moisture.
Separate Storage: Avoid storing multiple pieces together. For example, keep your necklaces separate from your bracelets to prevent tangling and scratches.
Avoid Humidity: Store your artificial jewellery in a cool, dry place. High humidity can accelerate tarnishing. Consider placing silica gel packets in your jewellery box to absorb moisture.
Proper storage practices play a crucial role in "How to maintain artificial jewellery?" Storing your pieces with care will prevent damage and keep them looking their best for years.
3. Protect from Chemicals and Water
A significant part of "How to maintain artificial jewellery?" involves keeping it away from harmful substances that can cause tarnishing and damage. Chemicals found in everyday products like perfumes, lotions, hairsprays, and cleaning agents can degrade the quality of artificial jewellery over time.
Tips to Protect Jewellery from Chemicals:
Apply Products Before Wearing Jewellery: Always apply lotions, perfumes, and hairspray before putting on your jewellery. This reduces direct contact with chemicals that can cause fading or tarnishing.
Remove Jewellery Before Swimming: Chlorine in swimming pools and saltwater can corrode artificial jewellery. Make sure to remove all pieces before diving into a pool or the ocean.
Avoid Cleaning with Jewellery On: Remove your jewellery before cleaning the house or using any harsh chemical products. Cleaning agents can be highly corrosive and cause irreversible damage.
Water exposure is another factor that can cause damage to artificial jewellery, especially if it contains metals prone to rusting or tarnishing. Stainless steel, like the pieces offered by Jewellery Hat, is more resistant to water damage, but it’s still a good practice to minimize exposure.
4. Regular Inspection and Maintenance
While daily care and cleaning are important, regular inspection is another vital aspect of "How to maintain artificial jewellery?" Over time, even the best-cared-for pieces can show signs of wear and tear. Catching these early can prevent further damage.
How to Inspect Your Artificial Jewellery:
Check for Loose Stones or Clasps: Regularly check your jewellery for any loose stones, beads, or clasps. Addressing these small issues early can prevent you from losing an entire piece or stone.
Look for Signs of Tarnish: Keep an eye on any tarnishing or fading on your jewellery. Some materials tarnish faster than others, and it's best to treat them immediately to prevent further damage.
Polishing and Recoating: At Jewellery Hat, we offer a lifetime replacement warranty on the polishing of our stainless steel pieces. This ensures that your jewellery always looks its best. If your pieces start to look dull, contact us for polishing and maintenance.
Regular inspection and polishing are key elements in "How to maintain artificial jewellery?" By staying proactive, you can enjoy your pieces for a long time.
5. Handling Artificial Jewellery with Care
Handling your artificial jewellery with care is crucial to ensuring its longevity. How you wear and remove your jewellery can impact its overall condition.
Handling Tips:
Remove Jewellery Before Sleeping: Wearing jewellery to bed can cause it to snag, bend, or break. Always remove your jewellery before going to sleep.
Avoid Wearing Jewellery During Physical Activity: Engaging in sports or exercise while wearing jewellery can cause physical damage. Rings and bracelets are especially prone to bending or scratching during physical activity.
Handle with Clean Hands: Oils from your skin can transfer to your jewellery, causing it to tarnish. Always handle your pieces with clean, dry hands.
By treating your artificial jewellery delicately, you can avoid unnecessary wear and tear, ensuring it stays in great condition. This is a vital part of understanding "How to maintain artificial jewellery?"
6. Why Choose Stainless Steel Jewellery?
At Jewellery Hat, we pride ourselves on offering high-quality stainless steel jewellery that is designed to last. Stainless steel is an excellent choice for artificial jewellery because it is durable, anti-tarnish, and requires less maintenance than other materials.
Benefits of Stainless Steel Jewellery:
Durability: Stainless steel is much more durable than other metals commonly used in artificial jewellery, such as brass or copper. It resists scratches and is less likely to dent or warp.
Anti-Tarnish: One of the biggest advantages of stainless steel is its resistance to tarnishing. Unlike other materials that can tarnish easily, stainless steel retains its shine and does not corrode.
Hypoallergenic: Stainless steel is hypoallergenic, making it a great choice for individuals with sensitive skin or metal allergies.
Low Maintenance: Stainless steel is easy to care for. Simply clean it with a soft cloth and store it properly to maintain its shine.
Choosing stainless steel jewellery is a great way to minimize the need for maintenance while still enjoying beautiful and stylish pieces. At Jewellery Hat, we offer a wide range of stainless steel, anti-tarnish earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and rings, all designed to last a lifetime.
Conclusion: How to Maintain Artificial Jewellery
In conclusion, learning "How to maintain artificial jewellery?" is essential for ensuring that your favourite pieces stay looking new and stylish for years to come. By following these tips—regular cleaning, proper storage, avoiding exposure to chemicals, and inspecting your pieces regularly—you can extend the life of your artificial jewellery.

The Beauty and Significance of Gold Anklets for Kids"
Introduction
Gold anklets for kids are more than just a piece of jewelry; they are a blend of tradition, fashion, and sentiment. Whether gifted as a token of love, worn for cultural reasons, or simply as a stylish accessory, these delicate ornaments hold a special place in many families. In this blog post, we’ll explore everything you need to know about gold anklets for kids, from their historical significance to the latest fashion trends and safety tips.
Historical and Cultural Significance
The history of anklets dates back thousands of years, with evidence of their use found in ancient civilizations such as Egypt and India. In many cultures, anklets are considered a symbol of good luck and protection. For example, in Indian tradition, gold anklets are often given to newborns and young children during special ceremonies as a blessing and a way to ward off evil spirits.
Fashion Trends
In recent years, gold anklets for kids have become a popular fashion accessory. Modern designs range from simple gold chains to intricate patterns adorned with charms and gemstones. Personalized anklets, featuring the child’s name or initials, have also become a trendy choice. These pieces can be worn with traditional outfits or as a stylish addition to everyday wear.
Safety Considerations
When it comes to children’s jewelry, safety is paramount. It's essential to choose designs that are free from sharp edges and have secure clasps to prevent the anklet from accidentally falling off. Opt for hypoallergenic materials, especially for children with sensitive skin. Gold purity should also be considered; 18k or 22k gold is often preferred for its balance of durability and purity.
Buying Tips
Selecting the right anklet involves several considerations. Measure the child's ankle to ensure a proper fit, allowing some extra length for growth. Check the quality of craftsmanship and ensure the jeweler provides a certificate of authenticity. It’s also wise to set a budget beforehand, as the price can vary significantly based on design and gold purity.
Caring for Gold Anklets
Proper care will keep the anklet looking beautiful for years. Clean it regularly with a mild soap solution and a soft brush. Store it in a soft pouch or jewelry box to prevent scratches. It’s best to remove the anklet during rough play or sports activities to avoid damage.
Personal Stories and Testimonials
Parents often share touching stories about the significance of gold anklets in their families. For instance, one mother described how her daughter’s anklet was a gift from her grandmother, symbolizing the family’s enduring bond and tradition.
Conclusion
Gold anklets for kids are a beautiful blend of tradition and fashion, offering both aesthetic appeal and cultural significance. Whether you’re looking to buy one for a special occasion or simply to adorn your child, understanding the history, trends, and safety considerations will help you make an informed choice.

Select a design that reflects your personal style.
Take into account the fabric and weaving technique used to create the saree.
Make sure the saree is of the highest quality.
Have fun shopping for your new paithani silk saree!
History of Paithani Silk Sarees
The Paithani silk saree is a traditional Indian garment that has been around for centuries. It is made from fine silk and is characterized by its intricate designs and beautiful colors.
Originally, the Paithani silk saree was worn by the royal families of Maharashtra. It was considered to be a symbol of wealth and status. Over time, the Paithani silk saree has become more popular and is now worn by women all over India.
If you're thinking of buying a Paithani silk saree, it's important to understand the different types that are available. There are many different designs and colors to choose from, so you will be able to find the perfect saree for you.
Understanding the Different Variants
Paithani silk sarees come in different variants, and it's important that you understand the differences before making your purchase. Here are the three main variants:
Classic Paithani: The quintessential Paithani silk saree, with a peacock design that is celebrated for its artistry.
Banarasi Paithani: A type of Paithani silk saree that is famous for its gold and silver brocade work.
Maharashtra Paithani: The most contemporary variant, with a more contemporary pattern and design.
Maintaining and Caring for Your Paithani Silk Saree
Now that you’ve found the perfect Paithani silk saree, you’ll want to make sure it stays looking its best. To keep your Paithani silk saree looking beautiful, here are a few tips.
First and foremost, make sure to only hand wash your Paithani silk sarees. The fabric is delicate and might be damaged if you put it in the washing machine. It's always best to use a mild detergent or soap specifically designed for delicate fabrics, and rinse with cold water until all the soap is off. Then, lay flat somewhere cool and let dry naturally.
It's also important to not iron or use a steamer on the saree; instead try using a clothes brush or soft towel to restore the fabric back into shape after drying. You should also avoid direct sunlight, as this can fade the colors over time and cause it to weaken and wear out more quickly. These are just a few tips for keeping your Paithani silk saree looking its best for years to come!
Latest Designs & Styles in Paithani Silk Sarees
If you want to stay up-to-date with the latest designs and styles in Paithani silk sarees, you need to check out the options available online. So, how do you choose the perfect paithani silk saree? Here are a few tips to help you out:
First, consider your body type. Not all paithani silk sarees are created equal – some styles will look better on certain body types than others.

Best Marble Granite and Natural Stone Vs Worst Artificial Quartz and Tiles
White marble is classic and timeless. Elegant Greek columns and powerful Roman walls gleam white in the sun, and white and gray-veined statues stand guard in art museums. For millennia, we’ve loved the soft, white-gray stone. Marble is mined around the world and graces monuments like India’s glorious Taj Mahal and Turkey’s beloved basilica, the Hagia Sophia. Our love of marble hasn’t faded — from clocks to kitchen counters, white marble is the trend of the decade.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSnQ1gLqJak&t=24s
Marble is a metamorphic stone that forms from limestone. As limestone is softened from heat and pressure, it re-crystallizes into vast marble deposits. The swirling grey and colored veins result from impurities such as iron oxides, clay, silt, or sand.
Each slab of marble is unique, giving a personalized touch to any space. For timeless appeal and premium texture, you can’t go wrong with a marble countertop. However, marble is not well-suited for every project. Keep reading to learn about marble’s quirks, and about beautiful marble alternatives that provide the look of marble without the maintenance.

The Popularity of White Marble
Carrara and Calacatta are two popular White Marbles
Minimalist and elegant, the bright tones of marble complement nearly any interior design scheme. White marble gets its coloring from a lack of impurities — the grayer the marble, the more it is influenced by other minerals like iron and sand. Two of the most popular strains of white marble are mined in the warm Italian hills — Carrara and Calacatta.
Both types of marble are white with twilight-gray veins. You can only see their differences when you compare them side by side. Carrara tends to have soft, indistinct veins and a grayer background. In contrast, Calacatta marble has a bright white background color with bold and dramatic veins.
Widely available and affordable, Carrara marble is less expensive than Calacatta. Its affordability and availability have made it making it the most popular marble for interior design. Whether it’s Carrara, Calacatta, or a different type altogether, white marble is especially striking as kitchen counters and splash guards, bathtub surrounds, accent flooring, vanity tops, and fireplace surround.
White marble is one of the most stunning natural stones, tending to brighten and elevate a space. Its popularity has lasted since the earliest cultures, and it doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere soon.
Why You Might Not Want Marble Countertops
Despite its beauty, white marble may not be the best choice for everyone. The stone has a reputation for being easily chipped, stained, and etched — a marble counter requires regular upkeep and maintenance to stay in excellent condition. Before you decide on a marble countertop, consider these three questions:
1. How Much Do Marble Countertops Cost?
Marble Countertops cost $2,500 on average
The cost of marble varies based on where it was mined and the number of impurities it contains. The average price range for marble is anywhere from $60 to $150 per square foot. On average, a square foot of marble costs around $80. In general, grayer marbles like Cararra will cost less than bright whites like Calacatta, which can run you $180 per square foot. While marble is not the most expensive stone, it is significantly more expensive than other leading materials like some granites and quartz.
An average marble countertop will run about $3,000. At the high end, a new counter could cost you almost $10,000. For homeowners on a smaller budget, you can find less expensive options than Italian marble — high-quality Makrana marble, mined in India, can sometimes be found for only $12 per square foot.
The color of the marble will also affect its price tag. As a general rule, the whiter the marble, the more it will cost you — marble with tints of pink, beige, and gold will often cost less than striking white Calacatta. While calculating the price of new marble countertops, also consider the costs of labor and installation as well as tools and equipment.
2. How Durable Are Marble Countertops?
White marble is a strong material — the Greek Parthenon has stood for over 2,000 years. But its strength doesn’t automatically make it right for counters.
Marble is vulnerable to stains
Marble is porous, which means it absorbs liquids. To withstand normal kitchen or bathroom wear and tear, marble needs to be sealed every 1 to 2 years. Marble is vulnerable to stains, so you will have to act quickly to prevent spills from leaving permanent marks. Stains seep deep into the rock and are difficult, if not impossible, to reverse.
Acidic substances such as lemon juice easily scar marble. This effect is called etching, and it removes the polish from the surface of the stone. While they may not be visible in bright light, etching scars pop in dim or slanted light. The effects of etching are more visible on polished marble finishes than honed marble.
Softer and more brittle than granite or engineered stones, marble chips and scratches easily. After sustained use, marble countertops often develop nicks and gouges.
3. Is It Hard To Care For Marble Countertops?
The critical component in caring for a marble countertop is sealing. Because marble is a porous stone, it has thousands of tiny, interconnected channels and gaps between its grains. These small spaces in the stone easily absorb liquid, which isn’t ideal for a countertop. A sealer is a liquid that is applied to the counter to block the pores of the stone, preventing other liquids from entering and staining the counters. While sealing won’t make your counterstain- or etch-proof, it will go a long way to prevent wear and lengthen the life of your stone.
Marble Countertop Maintenance
Sealers come in two broad categories — water- and solvent-based. Both are effective, but water-based sealers are more friendly for indoor settings — their fumes are less harmful than solvent-based products. As always, using a penetrating sealer is highly recommended. These sealers are designed to be absorbed by the stone and seal from within, and they work with both polished and honed textures.

New Tools, New Generation, Old Friends, and Old Values
The trick with marble countertops is to regularly reseal them. Many experts recommend you reapply a sealant every 1 to 2 years — at the least, reseal every year. If you forget to reseal your countertop or don’t have the time, your marble will be at a greater risk for staining. Because marble is a relatively soft stone, it is prone to chipping and cracking. Avoid rubbing against your counter with jewelry or other metal pieces of clothing — you could accidentally chip off a piece of the marble.
Besides frequent sealing and attention to chipping, marble is not hard to clean. With a bit of water and gentle soap, you can wipe away most dirt and spills. But nothing can postpone etching forever — marble will develop a patina as it ages, even if you religiously reseal it.
Alternatives to Marble Countertops
If white marble is a little beyond your budget or you can’t devote time to its upkeep, don’t worry — there are plenty of durable options that retain the look of marble without the high-maintenance.
Stones That Look Like Marble
Stone can be divided into two broad categories — natural and synthetic. Natural stones include granite, limestone, and marble. Alternately, synthetic or engineered stone is man-made and formed by fusing various minerals and compounds. The most common engineered stone is quartz.
In this guide, we will talk about the most popular natural and engineered stone — granite, and quartz. Both granite and quartz are favorite countertop stones, and both come in a range of affordable to high-end prices.
Granite That Looks Like Marble
Known as the earth’s oldest building material, granite is an igneous stone — it forms from the solidification of molten rock. This makes it hard, durable, and highly heat-resistant. Composed of feldspar, quartz, and mica, granite occurs in thousands of color variations from dusky grays to coral pinks. Some strains of granite can resemble marble — while it might not reach the bright white of Calacatta marble, some granites closely resemble the grayer Carrara stone.
Granite is a perfect option for a homeowner who loves the look of marble but wants a more durable, etch-resistant surface.
Benefits and Disadvantages of Granite Countertops
Granite makes a sturdy, stylish countertop. Some of the stone’s benefits include:
Durability: Granite is more heat-resistant than marble and much more scratch-resistant. Because it forms under intense pressure, granite is one of the toughest naturally occurring materials on earth.
Eco-Friendliness: Because granite is a natural stone, it is less processed than quartz or other engineered stones. It requires less carbon emission in its processing, giving it an environmentally-friendly edge over synthetic alternatives.
Wide Range of Use: More durable than marble, granite has a broader range of applications. These vary from countertops to flooring and wall tiles, stairs, thresholds, and desktops.
While granite countertops have many advantages, consider these potentially negative characteristics of the stone before you purchase.
Porous: Although not as porous as marble, granite will need to be expertly sealed to prevent stains.
Price: While not as expensive as high-end marbles, granites are not the most cost-effective countertop options. Depending on quality, the cost of granite can range from $60 to $175 per square foot.
Granite can provide the real-stone look and feel of marble countertops, making them an attractive alternative for homeowners who don’t want marble’s intensive care.
Types of Granite
Granite comes in a wide range of colors and patterns, and several types resemble white Carrara marble. Here are some of the most popular imitations:
Bianco Romano: This icy stone features streaks of gray and beige. With a light color and detailed pattern, Bianco Romano granite is a striking addition to any bathroom or kitchen. This stone stains easily, so it requires a strong sealing agent.
Glacier White: Cool, light-to-dark veining makes this creamy granite interesting and appealing. Slabs include flecks of subtle colors such as beige, reds, and pinks. Glacier White granite goes well with white or dark cabinets and can range from pale to dark gray.
Colonial White: Quarried in India, Colonial White granite features a cotton-white background with deep gray specks and splashes. Some slabs will be grayer and beige-heavy than others.
White Ice: This bright granite is mined in Brazil, and features blue-gray veining contrasted with a snowy background. In many slabs, sparkling quartz deposits catch the light, adding a dazzling effect to a counter.
While granite may not have the exact veining structure as marble, it’s possible to find close matches that will add sophistication and durability to any space.
Quartz That Looks Like Marble
Quartz is an engineered stone made from at least 90 percent of ground quartz combined with polyester resins. These added materials bind the minerals and give the stone color. Because quartz is synthetically engineered, it can come in virtually any color, from natural grays and beiges to bright reds and vibrant blues.
Low-maintenance, quartz is an ideal material for countertops. It requires little upkeep to stay in pristine condition, and holds up exceptionally well to age and wear. Retaining the appearance of natural stone, quartz is an attractive and sturdy alternative to marble countertops.
Benefits and Disadvantages of Quartz Countertops
Quartz has several attractive components besides a beautiful look:
Non-Porous: Quartz is non-porous, which means it doesn’t need to be sealed. Its dense
grain makes quartz antimicrobial — it won’t absorb or retain harmful germs and bacteria.
Durability: Quartz doesn’t stain or scratch like marble, which makes it ideal for high-traffic areas such as kitchens. You don’t have to worry about chipping or scoring the surface, which is perfect for counters that get a lot of use.
Wide Range of Use: Like granite, quartz can work well in a variety of settings beyond countertops. Consider adding quartz to workstations such as desks or vanities.
Quartz counters are lovely and lasting. But make sure you account for the stone’s less-attractive qualities before you invest in new counters.
Price: Depending on the grade of the stone, quartz countertops can cost the same as natural stone, at about $60 to $100 per square foot. However, quartz quickly goes up in price — when you factor in the price of installation, a quartz counter can cost $100 to $200 per square foot.
Not Eco-Friendly: Because quartz is an engineered stone, it requires high levels of processing. To cut back on environmental impact, consider purchasing quartz that is regionally manufactured to minimize the gas emission of transportation.
Types of Quartz
Quartz countertops come in a range of colors and patterns that mimic white marble. Here are some of the most popular types:
Calacatta Nuvo: With a white background and wide, gray veining, Calacatta Nuvo quartz is a popular choice for marble-esque counters. Produced by Caesarstone, this quartz is meant to mimic Calacatta marble but with more durability and a less-expensive price tag.
Silestone Helix: This white quartz has soft, light gray vein patterns that fade into a soft white background. Subtle, Silestone Helix will complement any space without drawing too much attention.
Misty Carrara: Another Caesarstone product, Misty Carrera is smoother and less dramatic than Calacatta Nuvo. Perfect for bright and open spaces, Misty Carrara adds a contemporary and clean look to the bathroom or kitchen counters.
Vena Statuario Bianco: This quartz features defined gray veining that gives it a natural appearance. The pattern varies between blocks, adding to its natural appearance.
Sugarbush: Produced by Allen + Roth, Sugarbush quartz features cream and gray veining. Imitating warm marbles, this quartz will add an opulent touch to a countertop. Translucent and gray particulates glisten in the light, adding a subtle sparkle to this quartz.
Beautiful and non-soluble, quartz is a long-lasting addition to any space. With plenty of options resembling marble, quartz countertops provide the look of marble without the worry of frequent sealing or permanent etching.
Other Solid Surface Options for Countertops
If you’re looking for something other than natural or engineered stone, don’t worry — the market is full of non-stone materials for lovely countertops.
Alternatives to white marble
1. Solid Surface
Solid surfaces are composites made of synthetic materials such as mineral dust and resin. Combined to resemble natural stone, solid surfaces are non-porous and highly stain resistant. Because they are synthetic, solid surface materials can be made to fit any shape — they are the perfect option for people working with curved or unusual counter shapes.
2. Ceramic or Porcelain
Made from clay and minerals, porcelain counters come in a wide range of styles and colors, and many marble imitations are available. Ceramic surfaces are scratch, heat, stain, and bacteria-resistant, so you can prepare food directly on the counter without worrying about damaging the surface. Porcelain is non-porous, so it doesn’t require a sealing agent. This low-maintenance alternative will last for decades.
3. Ice-Stone
For a sustainable marble alternative, consider Ice-Stone. Ice-Stone materials feature a white background dusted with flecks of recycled glass. Distinctly affordable, Ice-Stone countertops cost between $5 and $20 per square foot. The glass catches the light, adding a bright, sparkling effect to your counter.
When should you choose marble or an alternative?
Once you’ve considered the alternatives, decide whether or not marble is the best material for your countertops. Here are a few instances when marble might work for your project.
If You Have the Time and Resources: If marble fits your budget, it will create a stunning countertop. If you have the time to commit to regular sealing and immediate cleaning, your marble will last for years in beautiful condition.
If It’s Not in a Heavily Used Area: Marble is easier to maintain in areas that aren’t heavily used. Bathroom marble generally lasts longer than kitchen marble — typically, bathroom counters experience less use of the acidic products that will quickly etch the stone.
If You Don’t Care About Wear and Tear: Some people enjoy the “story” of worn, etched marble. If you are comfortable with a stone that will show some stains and etchings over the years, you’ll be less stressed by marble’s gradual corrosion.
When Not to Choose White Marble
For some projects, it might be best to consider an attractive marble alternative. Consider these factors as you make your decision.
If You’re Trying to Keep Costs Down: Marble is undeniably beautiful. But it comes with a continuing investment, both of time and money. Depending on the grade of marble, it can cost more than many other alternatives. But the real cost of marble is the upkeep. If you can’t devote time to regularly seal and clean your counters, marble may not be the best option.
If It Will Be Heavily Used: Marble placed in heavily used areas will inevitably face the wear and tear of daily life. If near an entry, your counter will have keys and objects tossed onto them regularly, and children or pets may cause scratches or spills. In this case, consider putting a marble counter in a more gently used location.
If You Want Your Counters to Stay in Perfect Condition: If marks and stains will cause you to stress, marble is probably not the best material for your counters. Consider a more durable option such as granite or quartz. Also, consider the longevity of your counters — if you need your counters to last for decades in a pristine condition, marble may not be the best choice.

She’s wearing Ugg boots; her hair is tousled. Despite the 6 a.m. call time, she declines a coffee and instead reaches for an old-fashioned doughnut hole. Lachman (whose first name is pronounced Dee-chen) is poised but low-key, nowhere near the fiery intimidator she portrays in her latest project, the Netflix original series Altered Carbon.
The museum is closed today, quiet save for crew chatter and the clang of gown-draped hangers on the stylist’s rolling rack; art hulks off the walls in the shadows of unlit corridors. Following months of stunt work, emotionally taxing scenes, and 16-hour days on set, the stillness is welcome. Lachman spent the summer in Vancouver, British Columbia, where Altered Carbon filmed its first season. Between network events and promotional appearances from São Paulo to Seoul, she’s savoring the post-production time off at home, just being Mom. Mathilda turns 3 in May, and her favorite things are scribbling, Sia music videos, and the family dog, Whisky. Deep love for family is an attribute the 36-year-old actress shares with her character, Rei. Perhaps the only trait they share, she says — that, and a fondness for action.
When it comes to that devotion, Lachman refers to a full-body, teeth-gritting sensation, a compulsion to hug tightly, to fuse, to be together forever. Rei takes the sentiment to an extreme, but Lachman relates. “That whole idea that I’ll just eat it,” she says, in her soft Australian drawl, which she dropped for the role. “Like I say to my daughter sometimes, ‘I just want to eat you up, I love you so much.’ ”
When we catch up by phone after the museum shoot, a few weeks before Altered Carbon’s premiere, she delves deeper into the idea of eating one’s feelings and shares a story about her four-legged childhood friend, a Jack Russell terrier named Singhi.
“When I was leaving Adelaide to pursue acting in Sydney, I found two of her little furs on my jacket,” she recalls. “I didn’t want to throw them away because I felt like that was throwing my dog away. I didn’t want to keep them because I thought I would lose them. So I swallowed the two little dog furs. I imagined they’d be absorbed into my body and we’d kind of be a part of each other.”
“When I was leaving Adelaide to pursue acting in Sydney, I found two of her little furs on my jacket. I didn’t want to throw them away because I felt like that was throwing my dog away.” Dichen Lachman
Lachman had shrugged off the role of Reileen Kawahara when she didn’t hear back from casting for four months. It was an uneventful lead-up. She received sides, sans any contextual clues to the plot, and submitted a self-taped video audition.
Then she got the call.
“What is this?” She’d actually forgotten. “There’s no callback? Do they want to see me again?”
“No,” Lachman’s agent told her. “They just want you to do the role.”
“I subsequently found out Laeta was a fan of Dollhouse [2009–2010] and The 100 [2014], so she was familiar with my work,” the actress says. “This is the biggest show I’ve ever been a part of … I just feel lucky to have been a part of it and humbled watching everyone’s work on the show.” The 10-episode, multimillion-dollar series, which became available for streaming Feb. 2, is one of Netflix’s highest-budgeted undertakings yet.
An adaptation of the 2002 cyberpunk novel by Richard Morgan, the first in his Takeshi Kovacs trilogy, Altered Carbon stars Joel Kinnaman as Kovacs (pronounced Ko-vach), a body-swapping soldier summoned to solve a murder in the year 2384. Human consciousness has been digitized and can be “sleeved” into new bodies, establishing a world in which the rich live forever and reprobates evanesce in the dark, debauched underbelly of society.
“It’s woven in such an intricate fashion, you can’t really say the show is just one thing,” Lachman explains. “It’s a love story. It’s a murder mystery. It’s action packed. There are all of these philosophical ideas, too. You walk away thinking, If I could live forever, would I even want to?”
Lachman portrays Kovacs’ sister, first appearing in episode one as a figment from his past; she gets her big reveal midway through the season. (At the risk of leaking a spoiler, let’s just say Lachman’s grand entrance is badass, evidential of the months pre-production she spent training in Japanese combat.)
Along with Kinnaman, the cast includes James Purefoy as a “re-sleeved” murder victim in search of his own killer; Martha Higareda as a well-meaning cop intent on closing the case; Renée Elise Goldsberry as Quellcrist, a futuristic Robin Hood hell-bent on quelling elitism; Will Yun Lee as Kovacs’ “birth sleeve”; Ato Essandoh as Kovacs’ gun-slinging ally; and Chris Conner as the personified consciousness of a hotel where Kovacs resides. These characters are complicated and not always who they appear to be. The plot is layered with flashbacks, visions, and alternate virtual-reality dimensions. Timelines seem to intertwine, leading the viewer through a supremely satisfying plot twist to a finale that may very well render all of us worthless until the second season finally airs. According to Kalogridis, “the biggest success is that the whole thing actually makes sense
“We lived with my uncle
and my aunts, my grandfather, and my cousins in a tiny
little apartment. So I had a really …” she pauses,
“colorful childhood, almost
of another era.”
Lachman was born in 1982 in Nepal. At that time, more than 90 percent of the country’s population of 15.7 million worked in agriculture, fielding rice, sugarcane, and oilseeds. Fewer than one in 10 owned a telephone. There was no FM radio. No television stations. Terrain continues to hinder development, but modern-day residents can tune in to Altered Carbon — Netflix extended its streaming services around the globe in 2016.
“I was there until I was about 7,” Lachman recalls. “I think we had Superman, Supergirl, and Police Academy, but no real TV to speak of.” Those VHS tapes were her immersion into science fiction. “We shared electricity with India at the time, so three or maybe four nights out of the week we didn’t even have electricity; mostly it was candlelight. We lived with my uncle and my aunts, my grandfather, and my cousins in a tiny little apartment. So I had a really …” she pauses, “colorful childhood, almost of another era.”
Lachman’s father, a Sydney native, was trekking through the Annapurna region of the Himalayas when he met his would-be wife, originally from Tibet, who was working at her family’s restaurant, a backpacker/tourist destination. “He told a friend, ‘I’m gonna marry that woman,’ ” Lachman recounts of her parents’ meeting. He did. The family moved to Australia when Dichen reached school age. “I remember taking my cousin to school [in Nepal]; it was in a hut, and they were still writing on slate with chalk. My father thought I’d have more opportunities if we were in Australia, so we moved to Adelaide.”
She was 23, living on her own in Sydney and dabbling in low-budget films — not long after the dog-fur incident — when she landed the role of Katya Kinski on Australia’s long-running soap opera Neighbours, a veritable breeding ground for Aussie exports. (Margot Robbie, Chris and Liam Hemsworth, and Russell Crowe are all alums.) A leading role in Joss Whedon’s sci-fi series Dollhouse brought Lachman to California in 2008.
Here, she met husband Maximilian Osinski, who is also an actor in the sci-fi/superhero sphere. Both have appeared in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC, albeit in different seasons, and worked together on TNT’s end-of-days drama The Last Ship. Most recently Lachman portrayed alien ringmaster Roulette in Supergirl’s second season. Then Netflix came calling.
“It’s so refreshing because all of the women are such intricate, complex characters,” Lachman says. “They get to be beautiful and fierce, and they hit back. I think this is largely due to Laeta really wanting to show us off like that, to give us more than just a one-note character.”
As Kalogridis puts it, fierce women are the backbone of the show; they promote an underlying message of “owning your body and owning your power.”
Kalogridis has a stellar team, from set decorators and fight choreographers to visual effects artists and cinematographers, whose credits read like a best-of sci-fi list: Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America: Civil War, War for the Planet of the Apes, Wonder Woman, The Martian. “This was definitely a labor of love for a lot of people,” she shares. “It’s not a movie, but it’s not necessarily what you associate with TV. It’s sort of occupying an interesting in-between space.”
“We were world-building,” adds costume designer Ann Foley, who joined the Altered Carbon team after four years with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., during which time she dressed Lachman. “That was one of the things that really drew me to this project — helping Laeta build and develop this world. One of the challenges when you’re doing anything futuristic is trying to keep it grounded and relatable so people don’t get distracted by the costumes. You don’t want to pull anybody out of the story.”
Foley orchestrates a visual crescendo through the season in ensembles that define each character and provide covert signals to the viewer. Lachman’s commanding wardrobe evolves alongside Rei’s tumultuous story arc; androgynous Samurai- and Sōhei-inspired combat gear metamorphoses into regal, sinewy shapes. Threading together her range of looks is one choice color. “You see so much green in the world where Reileen and Kovacs grew up,” says Foley, referring to scenes filmed in Vancouver’s verdant forest near Widgeon Falls. “You’ll see there will always be an element of that color in her costume, because that helps to inform who the character is.”
In Episode nine, Rei sits with Kovacs and tries to express the intrinsic bond she has always felt with him — a full-body, teeth-gritting sensation, a compulsion to hug tightly, to fuse, to be together forever. Despite hundreds of years of separation, in this world where one’s consciousness can live forever, occupying different bodies, Reileen has never stopped loving her brother. They are family, and family comes first.
“Remember what Mom used to say?” Reileen asks Kovacs as they sit at a small table in a seedy Moroccan-style hookah lounge. She chooses each word slowly and carefully. “ ‘I love you so much, I could eat you up.’ When you were arrested, they put me in an orphanage. All I had left of you was one of your old shirts … They ripped that shirt out of my hands — I can still feel it tearing, the threads still in my fingers. I knew they were going to take those too. So I swallowed them. Just to have something, anything, left of you.”
That passion is the characteristic Kalogridis saw in Lachman and the reason she sought her out for the role. “She brings a real depth and age to a character,” Kalogridis says. “I absolutely believe her version of a woman in her late teens/early 20s and a woman who is 255, 260 … Dichen’s just a very old and interesting soul. She is the warrior goddess.” Lachman has ventured a long way from Kathmandu, from Adelaide, and from Sydney, but as with all of us, the sum of her past experiences defines the person she is today.
“There’s a moment,” Lachman says, “where [my character] discovers Takeshi in the yukuza warehouse, and they just start killing everyone around them. She looks at him and smiles. There was all this action happening around us, and I had to try to cover my laughter because I kept thinking, I can’t believe I’m doing this. Who am I?! I’m originally from a Third World country, then a sleepy little town in Australia, and I’m running around like Rambo on this set with hundreds of stunt guys and people shooting guns at each other …
“This is what I dreamed about.”

Red Baraat with The Higgs @ The Satellite (6/29/18) // Show Review
“The South Asian Red Wedding...Celebration is Coming.”
Article by Pam Gwen
Photos and video by Katy Carolyn Ramage
The Earth and The Moon are natural satellites that aren’t easy to miss. THE Satellite, however, is.
“Wait, wait, wait. Siri says we’ve passed it already.”
My best friends and I whip around Silver Lake Boulevard and finally spot the venue through the dim Marquee labeled, “FRI RED BARAAT & THE HIGGS” The valet driver charges us $5 dollars. Parking, for a bargain? In Los Angeles?! Ahhh, it’s the simple luxuries in life.
I spot a “Dreams of LA: Food and Spirits” sign, but it is an artifact of the past, worn-down and unlit. Today, the Satellite hosts up-and-coming local bands, comedy nights, and eclectic DJ nights from Gay Asstrology (Cancers enter FREE all Cancer season long) to Dance Yourself Clean (EVERY Saturday).
I motion our UCLA Radio giveaway winners to will-call and congratulate them on scoring tickets. On the dance floor, a crowd is swaying in unison to the Orange County cerebral jam band, the Higgs. The 4-piece band: John Lovero on guitar and vocals, Garrett Morris on drums, David Barsky on bass and vocals, and Jesse August Jennings on synth, keyboard, and organ. Named after the Higgs-Boson particle as it unifies a variety of forces. Similarly, the Higgs fuse the forces of progressive and alternative rock, blues, and reggae in their electrifying songs.
Jennings of The Higgs
Jennings is in his own planet, defying gravity with his fingers as he masterfully glides over his set-up. An electric fan blows his hair in an upwards direction towards a retro fluorescent sign labeled “The Higgs” with an astronaut perched on it. The influences of the Grateful Dead, Phish, and Wilco seep through the oscillating sounds of the Satellite. The Higgs grin at each other and bask in the glory of their alluring set.
My friends and I go up the stairs to the second bar and immediately, five of us sardines in the photo booth. After roaring at the comically claustrophobic photos, I peer through the Satellite’s glass wall that reveals the dance floor. I notice the legends of Red Baraat finally piling on stage.
Red Baraat
Sunny Jain, the frontman of Red Baraat, was born of immigrant Punjabi parents. Jain grew up in Rochester, New York which established his framework for music. His mother played Bhajans (in Hindu this means “sharing”), known for their spiritual ideas and melodic ragas (melodic structures for improvisation in Indian music). Sunny’s father constantly banged his Indian banjo and harmonium to classic Bollywood music. His Jainism background was also combined with the Western influence of his sibling’s love for progressive-rock, pop, and hip-hop.
At age 4, Sunny began learning North Indian percussion and rhythm. Sunny played the Indian tabla, but at age 12 he began learning the vocabulary of jazz through idols like Max Roach and Philly Joe Jones. Growing up, Sunny's teachers encouraged him to drop his Punjabi background and focus on American music theory. Nonetheless, when he began to compose his own music, he knew he wanted to celebrate the inclusivity of his musical backgrounds.
In 2005, Sunny brought his culturally encompassing music to the surface at his own….wedding. He melded North Indian rhythm Bhangra with jazz, rock, hip-hop, and funk along with 30 of his talented musician friends. They performed for Sunny’s baraat. In India and Pakistan, a baraat is a massive marching procession of the groom’s wedding party before they reach the wedding venue. It is a joyous celebration of brass music, singing, stomping, and hand-clapping that can last for 5 hours.
In 2010, Sunny wanted to spread South Asian wedding celebrations to the masses and thus, Red Baraat was born (his mustache, however, was born in 2012). The band name came to fruition because to Sunny, red is a symbol of love, energy, and revolution. They have inspired conservative elderly in walkers in Pennsylvania to get up and dance. Furthermore, they have split their audiences in halves for epic dance battles. The band has cited inspirations from Primus, Miles Davis, Flying Lotus, Gogol Bordello, and Gurdas Maan. NPR has asked Red Baraat to perform for their Tiny Desk Concert series twice and has dubbed them “the best party band in years.” Red Baraat has performed for Obama at the White House, Bonnaroo, the Paraolympics in London, globalFEST, and an exorbitant amount of South Asian weddings.
At the Satellite, Red Baraat begins with chaal rhythm in “Punjabi Wedding Song (Balle Balle)” off of Chaal Baby. The band’s sonic palate is bewitching. The 50-pound gold sousaphone Kenneth Bentley is breathing life and bass into is enchanting. The gigantic sousaphone looks as if it could be its own satellite, its vibrations orbiting the atmosphere of the stage. Unlike Desiigner in his song Panda, Sunny is yelling his version of “rrrrRRAAA” that I find loveable. Full of passion, Sunny freely parades on the stage with a dhol strapped on his shoulder, decorated by white rope and a plethora of black tassels. I have never been privy to a dhol and my initiation to it is mind-blowing. On the double-headed drum, Sunny crafts a tight stampeding pulsation with two uniquely curved sticks.
On June 29th, Red Baraat released their latest album, Sound the People, influenced by the South Asian diaspora. Recorded at Studio G in Brooklyn, New York, the album is Red Baraat’s battle cry -- written weeks after Trump’s inauguration. The patient percussion of “Ghadar Machao” produces goosebumps on my arms. Derived from Arabic, Ghadar means “revolution.” I feel as if I’m at a protest, ready and determined to line-up and congregate. My arms vigorously fist pump to Sonny Singh’s beckoning voice as he sings in Punjabi, to English, and even in Spanish. Red Baraat’s candor on the political climate invigorates the crowd to joyously mourn and mindfully release anger. “Ghadar Machao” is a superb folk anthem of immigrant solidarity.
Tears flow down my cheek, but I wipe them away as the dynamic beginning of “Hey Jamalo” off of Sound the People begins. Its cadence is trance-inducing and forces every single person in the room to dance. Hips are surging, feet are stomping, arms are flailing, and there’s headbanging everywhere. The blending of Sonny Singh’s trumpet and Jonathon Haffner’s soprano saxophone is consuming alongside Chris Eddleton’s explosive drumming. The elements of North Indian Bhangra, New Orleans brass, and ska-punk in “Hey Jamalo” obliterates every box Sunny was advised to conform to as a young musician.
Rays of electric blue light gleams on Jonathan Goldberger during his psychedelic rock guitar shredding on “Moray Gari Suno” off of Sound the People. The track is an homage to 1960’s Chutney music from Trinidad with flavors of Indian and Caribbean music. The charismatic synergy and variety of Sunny, Sonny, Jonathan, Kenneth, Jonathon, and Chris’ personalities permeate the raw energy of Red Baraat. Their individual expertise as a cohesive unit cultivates the visceral sonic textures and booming improvisations of their stellar performance.
Red Baraat falls silent and Sunny invites two personalities from the crowd for a dance-battle on stage. The dancers in the center front shy away to the corners, but a courageous fan in a green shirt gets on stage. A minute or two passes and worry falls on Sunny’s face. In that sliver of a moment, I knew it was time for me to put down my notebook and jump into battle. My pulse raced as I stared into the many eyeballs shooting at me from down below.
I closed my eyes and breathed into the present moment, “It’s a Friday night with no homework, work, responsibilities, and worries. You’re on stage with Red Baraat. You. Got. This.” I opened my eyes to all my best friends, partner, and the crowd cheering me on. In a flash, the raucous of “Shruggy Ji” embroiders itself into my veins and overtakes the entirety of my ligaments. I stare into my opponent’s eyes and we both laugh. The members of Red Baraat are smiling and parading around the stage. Accompanied by their presence on stage, I feel as if I’m floating and in a utopian dimension of ecstasy and triumph.
Pam Gwen, a dancing queen, with Red Baraat
As I disembark on stage and reenergize, Red Baraat is instantly revitalized and to the next song. Sunny powerfully grabs the mic and announces, “Now this next track is Punjabi bluegrass. The original track is “Gora Mukra” meaning “fair-skinned face”, but we’ve inverted it to “Kala Mukra” meaning “dark-skinned face.” It is an act of defiance against glamorizations of white skin, subjecting women’s potential to only marriage, and a bunch of other shit like that. Let’s party.” “
Ingrained with a colonial mentality growing up, I was adamant about scrubbing my brown skin off with papaya soap to achieve the fair-skin my Filipino culture idolized. In the past year, I have found that locating myself in my Filipinx heritage has helped me formulate who I can become. “Kala Mukra” is my hymn of postcolonial consciousness. Within each measure, I feel an inner emotional and spiritual catharsis.
“Kala Mukra” features Ali Sethi and is murderous and frenetic. The track’s preamble is Sonny, Jonathon, and Kenneth’s feverish trumpets, the heartbeat is Chris and Sunny’s frantic percussion, and Jonathan’s spiraling Afro-Carribean groove riff is the comedown.
As I look around the variety of beautiful skin colors around me, I find healing. As the bridge of “Apna Punjab Hove” begins, my friend, who hasn’t been dancing much tonight, begins tearing up the dance floor. My friends and I know that he is a professional Indian wedding dancer and we go berserk -- we’ve never seen him dance in the flesh before. As we circle around him, a woman in a kurti and another in a blue pin-up dress begin doing classical Indian dance moves. To their left, two men pair up and do Bhangra, a Punjabi-style dance. From beginning to end, Red Baraat puts its crowd into a loving trance, lulling us into hedonistic dancing for what seems like an eternity. Their infectious and magnetizing energy is an experience in itself. A sense of world peace is exposure to Red Baraat’s revolutionary and humanitarian virtuosity.
