Dexter Family Newsletter 2019
Dexter Family Newsletter 2019
As I reflect back on our year, I canât help but think of Charles Dickens and his classic lineâŠ..It was the best of times, it was the worst of timesâŠ...and how appropriate it might be to summarize our 2019.
It was the age of wisdomâŠâŠ.as in Kelsi completing her first year in grad school at Rockhurst University in Kansas City. If you didnât know Kelsi and listened to her talk about school, you might think she is barely passing.  If I had a nickel for every time Kelsi told me something likeâŠ.That final exam did not go well; I did terribleâŠ.Only for me to later find out that she got something like a 107 on the test, well then I might have a lot of nickels to jingle in my pocket.  Kelsi is getting all Aâs as usual and well on her way to graduating in 2020 with a Masters in Speech Pathology.  She is enjoying her classes and her clinical training, and has a great supervisor who is guiding her to be gainfully employed later in 2020, most likely in a school setting.  Nic is also excelling at Rockhurst and working on his Doctorate in Physical Therapy. What impresses me most about Nic and Kelsi is that they indeed have wisdom in their respective areas of study. In other words, they really seem to know their shit.  Meanwhile, Kaylee Jo is now in her sophomore year in high school where she obsesses about getting good grades, which she always does.  Ava Jae is in 8th grade and doing well.  Donât tell anyone, but, I consider her my smartest kid.
It was the age of foolishnessâŠâŠ.as in Mike spending countless hours managing and competing in a mere 7 fantasy football leagues, or in Mike completing his 42nd Old Chicago World Beer Tour.  Along the way, I earned a leather lettermen jacket which Kelly just today told me that I looked like my Dad when wearing it.  I took that as a compliment and proudly wore it about town where people looked at me in awe, as they often do, but, I digress.  Mike also became a more well-rounded drinker in 2019. You see, I was lucky to get to spend a lot of time with my eldest daughter this summer who not only got me addicted to the Crime Junkies Podcast, but also too good wine.  Credit is also due to the great Tackes family for showing me the redeeming virtues of drinking wine and now even whiskey.  So donât be surprised to see me knocking back a Red Cab or sipping a bourbon in a cool sophisticated fashion.  If only, I had known about these things years agoâŠ..what might have been, or perhaps not been, like 42 beer tours. Â
It was the epoch of beliefâŠâŠ..in love and marriage as Kelsi became Mrs. Nic Arnone on August 10th in what turned out be an awesome ceremony and beautiful day for the two of them.  When they were both working on details like what are we having for having for dessert a couple of days before the big day, I was frankly a little worried, but, as it turns out the two of them are master wedding planners.  Everything was great from the venue, to the decorations, to the caterer, to the photographer, and most importantlyâŠ..to the bartender, backed by yours truly stocking the bar.  Yes, we had an awesome reception and we were so blessed to have so many of you travel all the way to Kansas City to celebrate with us!  In case you werenât able to be there, rumor has it that there is video available of Mikeâs fantastic wedding toast speech.  Sure, there are critics like Kaylee and Ava who will say, it wasnât all that, but, most of those at the reception gave me high fives for my performanceâŠat least the ones who were drinking that is. Kelsi is most happy that as a Speech Therapist that I finally learned how to pronounce her new last name.  For those of you who donât know, you need to emphasize the last âeâ in Arnone as it is an Italian name.  After meeting Nicâs family, I finally believe he is indeed Italian, after I had long presumed he was Norwegian or Swedish given his fair skin, blue eyed, blonde hair good looks. Â
It was the epoch of incredulityâŠâŠ.and speaking of family heritage, Mike took the Ancestry DNA test in 2019. Upon arrival of the test kit, I was in great disbelief as to how hard it actually is to fill up a one ounce test tube with saliva. Trust me, it was challenging.  As it turns out, I am 59% English, 33% Irish, 3% Swedish, 3% German, and 2% Norwegian, which makes me 110% Awesome, which I didnât need a DNA test to know. So far, it is incredulous that I have not found any long lost rich relatives who want to connect with me, but, I will keep the hope. Speaking of incredulous, Ava will be in high school next year, while Kaylee will have her Driverâs License in as few as 17 more days!  I for one canât believe we all survived her driverâs training, which started in local parking lots and proceeded to hairpin turns, around tight corners, at the speed of light. Only A.J. Foyt could have pulled off some of the harrowing driving miracles that I witnessed at times this summer!  But, we all survived, and with no dents in our vehicles!  I joke (sort of); Kaylee is actually a very good driver and was even told that she best driver in her Driverâs Ed class.  So you can feel safe when you see her drive by you in her 2007 BMW, which Drew gave to her as a Christmas present to her shrieking delight.  This is now the 2nd time Drew has given a car to one of his sisters.  I can only hope that he has another one to hand down to Ava in a few years.  The good news for Ava is that Drew has said that his next car will be a Tesla.
Even more incredulous is that a once self-proclaimed liberal, who once carved a pumpkin in the likeness of then candidate Barack Obama is morphing into a conservative right before our very eyes. Â Yes, people are in a state of disbelief over these developments. Â While he does not yet host a show on Fox News, many have looked in disbelief at Mike as he shares his theories on the likes of capital punishment. Â Not to mention, the poor teachers of Dunlap who look to their email boxes in fear that they might receive another long diatribe from Mike on what is wrong with our educational system. Donât worry, Mike still has a few liberal ideas and is still proud of President Obama. Â But, might we see a Trump carved pumpkin on Mikeâs doorstep in 2020? Â
As a final point on incredulity, I bet you canât believe how long this newsletter is as I canât believe you are still reading it. Â Donât worry, more good stuff is coming.
It was the season of lightâŠâŠfor Nic and Kelsi who enjoyed an awesome honeymoon trip to Disney and the bright beaches of Ft. Lauderdale.  Kelly and Ava also traveled to sunny Florida, with stops at Disney and the beaches of Tampa-St. Pete, while attending Avaâs Starquest World Dance Finals in Orlando.  Ava and her dance teammates at MLSD continued to shine on the dance floor, while bringing home lots of trophies along the way.  Ava and her DMS POMS teammates also brought home a trophy from the State Finals this year in the Jr. High Division. Ava is again on the DMS POMS team and also spending lots of time at the MLSD dance studio.  We canât wait to see her compete again in 2020, which will include her first ever solo performance. And, her latest dance project involves trying to teach her Dad how to dance in Tik Tok videos with her!  These will surely go viral. Meanwhile, Ava is still AvaâŠ.always energetic, always wanting to do something, always wanting Starbucks, and always, always asking me for something or to do something.  She is my constant season of light.  In fact, I sometimes think of Ava as Carol Anne like from the Poltergeist movie.  You see she has a life force that is hard to match and keeps me smiling, cursing, smiling, yelling smiling and speaking of yellingâŠ.. Kelly might occasionally yell at Ava (as she is this very minute!) and/or Kaylee for their continued inability and/or unwillingness to do seemingly simple things like throw a wrapper in the actual garbage can, maintain a room where you can actually see the floor, etc. Kelly is still Kelly, the straw that stirs our drink, the one who tries to keep us in check, and the one we, including our dogs can all rely on.  Kelly continues to work with awesome kids, who happen to have a few special needs, at Dunlap Middle School.  I likely have said this before, but, they, like us, are lucky to have her. Â
The season of light was also in full effect for Drew in 2019. Â Like most people do, he took a month vacation, this time in sunny South Africa, where he did things like go on a safari, dive into the ocean in a shark cage to see a Great White, see the great water falls of Victoria Falls, hang out in the desert of Namibia, and lounge on the beaches and climb the mountains of Cape Town. Â He also spent a month in Manhattan for work. Drew lives in the River North area of Chicago, where we all enjoy visiting him. Â Thanksgiving in Chicago was a highlight. Â In January, Drew has plans to visit Vietnam for a few weeks and make a stop at Boracay in the Philippines. Â Yes, it sucks to be Drew. Â He will also have extended work assignments in Boston and Washington, D.C., so stay tuned to his social media pages for amazing photographs and drone videos to document his journeys.
It was the season of darknessâŠâŠ.for both Mike and Kaylee, who unlike the rest of the family did not feel the sand under their toes of the warm sunshine upon their faces.  The longest trip these two took in 2019 was to Rochester, Minnesota, in the midst of winter, to attend Kayleeâs Speedo Sectional Championship Meet.  Despite the cold and snow, we both had fun.  And in the hopes of coming out of the darkness, I admit to the world (and mostly Kelly) that I received a speeding ticket on the way home, while dodging potholes and trying to stay interested while driving the monotonous roadways of the northland.  This has been a secret that only Kaylee and I have shared, with Kaylee often smiling and blurting out a whoo-whoo-police siren like sound anytime she felt it necessary to seek favor with me, while in the presence of my wife. So, Kelly, my beautiful, loving, forgiving wife, now you know and Kaylee, you have nothing to hold over my head any longer, at least for the time being.
It was the spring of hopeâŠâŠ.for Kaylee and her commitment to the sport of swimming. She continues to love the sport, and work hard, and has renewed resolve to achieve her goals.  She has a group of great friends on the team and is driven by Jersey Mike, her new coach, who yours truly worked hard to recruit to Peoria, along with the rest of it was the PAWW team.  Kaylee made a tough decision to forgo her high school swim season in favor of making a greater training commitment.  I was proud of her resolve in making this decision and remain proud of her in all aspects of what she does, and who she is, with the great exception of her sense of what a clean room is J. Â
It was the winter of despairâŠâŠ.as Kelly and Mike look around their house and dream of home improvements in 2020, while still wondering how we can pay for things like dance classes, swimming, and college.  Kelly and Mike did close out the year by replacing our 20 year old kitchen appliances.  Back to those kids who canât seem to hit the broad side of a barn with a wrapper, let alone a waste basket, we purchased a fancy new waste can in a last ditch effort to solve the problem. The new stainless steel trash can is our new pride and joy and opens automatically at the wave of the hand.  While enjoying all this new technology, our dryer just went out, so back to Shermanâs we go!  Speaking of technology, Kelly and Mike finished the year with a fun night in Chicago where a true life robot delivered âforgotten toothbrushesâ to our room. In addition to home improvements in the New Year, more resolutions for Mike include meditation, yoga, and drinking more wine (but only the good stuff).  I think all three of these can likely be done at the same time.
Yes, it was the best of times, it was the worst of timesâŠ.Like all families, we had some challenges to deal with, but those were far outweighed by many blessings. I am very lucky to have an awesome wife, four awesome kids and new son-in-law, our two awesome dogs Tahyo and Isla, along with our awesome family and friends.  We have had a wonderful Christmas as a family and look forward to a great 2020! Thank you and Merry New Year to you all!  May God bless you in new ways in the New Year!
P.S. â I consider this a living document in that I will likely be asked to edit for omissions, inaccuracies, offenses to my beloved family members, or over the likely fact that I wrote some of the same exact words last year.

When should you book a Wedding DJ for a destination wedding?
So you are all set to get married, congratulations! Planning your wedding can be daunting, but the best thing you can do is to break down tasks into smaller, and manageable ones. As soon as you finalize the venue, you should book a DJ for your destination wedding. We usually come across a common question from various planners and couples: "When should the destination wedding DJ be booked? Trust us, Don't leave it to the last minute!
We always advise the following â if you are planning a destination wedding, it is best to have the DJ booked three months ahead of the day. With just one month to go, it is NOT the best time to start searching for a DJ and book! We get a lot of inquiries and many are often for the weddings planned within a month or two, so, unfortunately, we have to reply âsorry, we are already bookedâ, which is a real disappointment.
In addition to this, coordinating with a DJ band to travel for a wedding isn't always straightforward. As DJ professionals, we have to take care of other prospects such as accommodation & travel bookings, or hiring of the equipment from reliable companies. Plus, we require extra days off for the settlement, which is why it is essential to discuss all details in advance.
The best destination wedding DJ professionals are very much in demand and get booked ahead of time. Reluctance to book early can lead to significant disappointment. Once booked, you will have the time to plan the finer details with minimal stress. Your wedding is meant to be a celebration of your love, and when it arrives, you should be dancing to great music.
We feel honoured to have DJ'ed in several countries such as Italy, Ibiza, Germany, Austria, Poland, Thailand, Amsterdam, Portugal, Malta, Azores, Poland, Switzerland, Florida, Sri Lanka, Croatia, Russia, Japan, Cambodia, Vietnam, New Zealand, Norway, China, Maldives, India, Greece, Cyprus, Miami. Just name the location and we are willing to travel to do DJ gigs on your special day, whether you need us for your Spain wedding a DJ or wish us to be part of your French wedding. Wherever you wish â we will have you covered!
As your destination wedding DJ, it will be our pleasure to learn more about your story and be part of the special day. So feel free to get in touch by filling out our booking form!

A Dying Town, a Crumbling Hotel and the Water That Could Restore Both
MINERAL WELLS, Tex. â Equipped with a flashlight, Laird Fairchild unlocks a side door of the Baker Hotel and begins a darkened 14-story ascent to the top.
Along the way, each floor reveals a grim tableau from decades of neglect. Graffiti and vandalism. Crumbling plaster. Shards of glass. Stripped walls. Broken, uprooted boards that once collectively served as brilliantly polished dance floors.
For much of the early and mid-20th century, the Baker and its North Texas city shared a vibrant economy. Lithium-laced healing waters gave Mineral Wells its name and turned it into an internationally famous spa and tourist destination. T.B. Baker, a Texas hotel magnate, opened the hotel bearing his name in 1929.
A towering Spanish Colonial Revival hotel in the heart of Mineral Wells, the Baker closed in 1972 and has stood as an inescapable reminder of the cityâs economic misfortunes over the past 47 years.
Now, however, energized business leaders are rallying behind a planned $65 million renovation to reopen the Baker in 2022 and cement a downtown revitalization that has been underway for several years.
âThis is not a renovation of a building,â said Mr. Fairchild, a co-founder of Hunter Chase Capital Partners, a real estate developer in Southlake, more than an hourâs drive northeast of Mineral Wells. âThis is a renovation of a town.â
For decades, the Baker embodied elegance, with a guest list that included Clark Gable, Judy Garland, Marlene Dietrich, the Three Stooges and, according to local legend, Bonnie and Clyde. But advances in medical science eroded Mineral Wellsâ appeal as a health resort, and the cityâs economy plummeted after the shutdown of Fort Wolters, a military base where helicopter pilots were trained during the Vietnam War.
As businesses closed and jobs vanished, some disgruntled residents began calling their city âMiserable Wells.â
Mineral Wells, with a population of just over 15,300, had a poverty rate of 23.5 percent in 2017, according to census data, compared with a state average of 14.7 percent. Median household income was $39,292, lower than the statewide median of $59,206.
Nevertheless, a surge of optimism has begun taking root throughout Mineral Wells as Mr. Fairchild works with Randy Nix, a local developer, and other community leaders on what they hope will become a 21st-century update of the cityâs glory days. The efforts have given rise to yet another nickname: âMiracle Wells.â
At the center of the redevelopment is the Baker, which has what Mr. Fairchild called a âcultlike followingâ across the globe, with thousands of followers on Facebook. City officials say they are repeatedly asked about the hotel during out-of-town trips. The Chamber of Commerce receives about 100 requests a year to hold weddings there.
âThereâs something about that hotel,â said Mike Allen, who was on the City Council for 22 years and served as mayor for 10 years before retiring in 2018. âIf you pay too much attention, she will put her claws into you.â
Mr. Fairchild said he had become enamored of the imposing building more than a decade ago. Working with a longtime friend and business associate, Chad Patton, he successfully negotiated with the hotelâs owner, Times Industrial Limited Partnership of Mesa, Ariz.
They declined to reveal the purchase price, but they offered broad outlines of a complicated financing package heavily dependent on state, federal and local tax incentives.
âItâs kind of like putting together a complicated puzzle, and each piece is required in order to make the puzzle work,â said Mr. Patton, a first vice president and branch manager at Wells Fargo Advisors.
The Baker project is the capstone in revitalization efforts that Mr. Nix began spearheading several years ago. Without a vibrant downtown, he said, any effort to reopen the Baker was likely to face the same fate as past unsuccessful attempts to bring the hotel back to life.
âAll of these years, we in this community have been sitting here waiting for somebody like Laird to come along and build the Baker, thinking itâs going to save this town, and I say itâs not going to happen that way,â Mr. Nix said. âUntil this community steps in and does something about itself and starts bringing in tourism, the Baker Hotel will never be a viable project.â
One of Nixâs key undertakings is focused on the Crazy Water Hotel, which opened in 1912, burned to the ground and then reopened in 1927, two years before the Baker. Like other things in Mineral Wells, it bears the nickname of the recuperative waters that supposedly helped cure a woman in serious mental distress.
Mr. Nix, owner of Nix Rental Homes, was among 10 local business leaders who put up $200,000 apiece to form a public benefit corporation to convert the seven-story Crazy Water Hotel into upscale apartments that can also be used for short-term rentals when tourism begins to take off. He said the project exemplified the communityâs renewed commitment to revitalizing Mineral Wells, saying he expects 150 investors to be on board when the hotel fully reopens in December 2020.
Restaurants and night life have also returned to the once-moribund city center, along with murals that brighten aging storefronts. Another Nix family project is the downtown Market at 76067, named for the ZIP code, where more than 100 vendors across two stories offer an array of items, from antiques to contemporary cuisine. An urban park is also part of the city master plan.
The goal is to transform Mineral Wells into a leading tourist destination in picturesque North Texas hill country, which will help draw more diverse industries and businesses to expand the cityâs economic base. Mr. Nix said tourism was a natural for the region, pointing out the cityâs proximity to the popular Possum Kingdom Lake, state parks and a 100-mile stretch of the Brazos River.
As part of that vision, the Bakerâs developers espouse the brand âPalo Pinto chicâ in describing plans to cater to a diverse clientele, including business conferences, school proms, reunions and weekend travelers looking for a small-town getaway. A major goal, Mr. Fairchild said, is to convert the Baker and Mineral Wells into âthe wedding capital of North Texas,â if not the entire state.
Mineral Wells still has abundant supplies of âcrazy water,â which will enable the Baker to reopen a second-floor spa as part of a larger fitness and wellness center. A private elevator will ferry patrons to an outdoor, Olympic-size pool downstairs. Workers will also reshape the interior into 157 spacious rooms instead of the current 450.
During a tour of the hotel this summer, Mr. Fairchild pointed out tarnished features from the hotelâs glamour days, and with a little imagination, it wasnât hard to picture a â30s-era celebrity being escorted through the lobby or lounging poolside, surrounded by autograph seekers.
Brass chandeliers, badly in need of polish and refurbishing, hung in the lobby. An acoustical dome in the ceiling once amplified the voices of guests so they could be heard by anyone in the room.
Mr. Fairchildâs favorite part of the hotel, he said, is the spacious Cloud Room on the top floor, which, as it did in the past, will host special events such as weddings and reunions. Now, however, its floors are destroyed, and the walls are marred with graffiti. A young oak tree has somehow taken root on the ledge outside, 14 stories above the sidewalk.
Planners are confident that the vast majority of residents eagerly await the Bakerâs re-emergence.
âWhen I was growing up here, there wasnât anything going on, and there was no reason for it to,â said Perri Leavelle, a co-owner of the Brazos Market and Bistro downtown.
Now, âitâs better than itâs ever been in my lifetime,â she added. âItâs exciting that Mineral Wells is right here on the forefront of people coming back to downtowns all over the nation.â

Donât Ruin Your Wedding Photography Career Before It Starts
So, you are about to embark on your first solo wedding shoot of your career. Youâve got butterflies in your stomach, youâre stressed, and the pressure is most certainly setting in. Donât panic, read this carefully and you will be well prepared for photographing the most important day of someoneâs life.
A little background on me, Iâm the founder of Mott Weddings destination wedding photography studio in Vietnam. Iâve shot weddings all over the world for over a decade. Iâm also on a reality TV show about photography show so I obviously know what Iâm talking about because the TV doesnât lie (wink wink).
Now that you know me well, do you take me as your lawful wedding photography coach? Read this and then say, âI doâ in the comments section.
Here Are Your Vows
1. Get Experience
First things first, get some experience as a second shooter with a veteran wedding photographer. Watch him/her closely, not just on how they cover the wedding but how they interact with the couple and the guests and how they handle all situations.
2. Communication
Leading up to the wedding you should have a nice talk face to face with the bride and groom. If you canât meet in person have a video chat on Skype. Seeing someoneâs face is a good icebreaker and it makes things personal in an ever eroding impersonal world. Use this time to cover the details of the wedding day and to get to know each other.
3. Things to Talk About
I have my list of things I need to cover and it goes as such. If these questions can be answered by the wedding planner and you have a direct line of communication with the planner then no need to cover it twice.
â First off, what did they like about my work and why did they hire me. This might seem strange but itâs important. If they love my portraits I need to know why. I typically ask them to pick their favorite 3 images on my website and their 3 least favorites. Doing this little exercise helps guide me to know if they are more partial to artistic compositions and it just helps clear up what they specifically like about my photography.
â Listen to any concerns or questions they have and be a good listener and take notes.
â I ask why they picked their particular venue. This helps me understand what they like about the location and how to incorporate that into my images.
â How did they find me, itâs just always good to know whatâs working well in your marketing strategy or if they met you through a past client that is also helpful information.
â How many guests. Itâs good to know for many reasons.
â Do they have a video team? This is a long winded one so if the answer is yes read my next vow.
4. Working With a Video Team
The conversation must happen before the wedding and this is extremely important. You need to ask the couple flat out, is photography or video a priority to them? Yes, in a perfect world we are both the priority but letâs be real. If photography is their priority then this information needs to be communicated to the video team by the bride and groom or from the wedding planner, but preferably by the couple. This isnât a license for you to be an ass to the video team and you arenât their boss. They have a job to do too, so be polite and courteous and think for them as well.
Talk to the video team about where you want to be for the big moments such as walking down the aisle, first kiss, cake cutting etc. Be assertive and let them know where you will be shooting from during these key moments and they will appreciate the heads up because it will give them time to prepare.
Most video teams I work with are quite accommodating. However, Iâve had some bad apples with teams of 6 shooters and they were in all my frames. It can be a mess, again if photography is a priority then you need to be able to gesture to them to move out of the frame without any awkwardness.
If video is their priority, then after you pick up your crushed ego get on with it and do the job the best you can. If they have a big team and you are shooting solo just inform the couple that this could hinder you from getting unobstructed shots of the key moments. Of course, you will work hard not to let this happen, but float the possibility out there just so you are covered. Also, your contract should cover this as well.
5. Have A Contract
Donât ever shoot a wedding without a signed contract. I donât care if itâs your family or friends, have a contract that is fair but that covers your butt for everything. You can find templates online or if you have a budget hire a lawyer. If any changes are made to the contract make sure itâs not just verbal, get everything in writing.
6. Gear
Remember this is a wedding, you donât get do-overs. Have at least 2 of everything, overdo it with redundancies.
â Have enough batteries for your strobes and for your cameras. Bring a charger just in case. Batteries donât always charge properly so just be extra careful and check everything. Pack as if itâs a two-day shoot without power.
â Donât be cheap on memory cards, buy fast and reliable cards and but a lot of them. I use SanDisk and I like 32gb cards. Iâm wary of the huge cards such as 128gb because having so much of the wedding or the whole wedding on one card is dangerous.
â If you have a professional camera that has two memory card slots shoot with 2 cards in your camera at once. Set one slot to RAW and the backup slot for overflow in high-quality JPEG.
â Shoot with two cameras or at least bring two cameras. You should never be at a wedding with one camera, if something were to go wrong youâre f&*#$%.
7. Work Your Butt Off
Weddings are physically and creatively exhausting, you canât take a moment off physically or mentally. Itâs like youâre doing a photography triathlon or ironman; candidâs, portraits, detail shots, repeat. You must be tuned in the entire day and they are long days. The only time Iâm taking a breather during a wedding is when I eat and even then, Iâm trying to stay within eyesight so I donât miss anything. A little side note, try to schedule your eating time with theirs. Typically, the shots of people shoveling food in their faces arenât great so thatâs a great time for your break.
You owe it to the couple to be enthusiastic and to work as hard as you can the entire day so climb that tree, get on the ground for that unique angle, and run to capture that moment. You shouldnât be hanging out during âslow timesâ on your phone off to the side yawning. You should be trying to get cool detail shots or thinking of your next creative shot you can capture. The whole day you are building a story so there is always something to shoot.
Photography is subjective and people will judge your pictures with some judgment based on how they perceived you and your work ethic. If they see you on your phone or hiding off to the side, trust me, they wonât want to like your images. Iâm 40 years old and I love it when people pull me aside and say how impressed with how hard I work. Donât forget either, their friends who are engaged could be watching too, weddings are filled with possible future clients.
8. Two is Better Than One
If you can get an assistant or better yet a second shooter do so. This will free you up to be more creative and not just to get basic coverage shots because you are worrying about not messing up. Hopefully, you can bill the couple for it but even if you canât sell them on a second shooter, take a small loss and hire someone as a second shooter.
If the couple doesnât want to hire a second shooter, be honest with them about the limitations. For example, you canât be in two places at once so if the groom is getting ready far from the bride you might not be able to get coverage of both. This stuff might seem obvious, but again, most people are reasonable but this covers you from letâs say, unreasonable people.
9. Be Proactive
This is extremely important, donât give up so easily. If things are running late and you arenât going to have any light for the portrait session, speak up. If you can discuss with the planner or the couple about the best place for speeches or the cake cutting, voice your recommendation. This isnât to say that you are running the show and that you should be bothering the couple at all but some weddings donât have a planner or some have bad planners so give your advice for these things if they are crucial to getting a good shot.
Every couple and every wedding is different but use common sense and gauge the situation and when you see an opportunity for a good group shot or portrait opportunity ask the couple nicely if they mind stepping aside for a few minutes.
Donât be shy going up to groups of people hanging out and asking them for a shot. Again, be proactive.
10. Portrait Session
I fight for a solid hour for portraits with the bride and groom and I ask that if the video team joins me that they shoot naturally and that they donât direct the couple. This is my time to shine as a photographer and the couple is going to be anxious to get back to the party so you want to make this as painless as possible while still delivering those images that will hang in their house and forever encapsulate their special day. Having multiple people directing is annoying for them and it will eat up half your time if youâre waiting for the video team to do everything.
I also suggest for the couple do the portrait session just after the ceremony and after the family portrait session and preferably during magic hour (the last hour of daylight). This is the most flattering light and itâs where I get my most iconic images. Some couples donât mind seeing each other before walking down the aisle so they want to do mid-day portraits. Iâll do it but I just explain and more effective, Iâll show them the difference in past pictures between good and bad light.
Have a game plan for your locations for that hour. Scout the day before if you can and even better scout at the exact time youâll be doing the portrait session the next day. If thatâs not possible, scout early the day of the wedding before you officially start. The last thing you want to do is to be figuring everything out on the fly, have a plan.
11. Family Portraits
Have the couple make a list of shots and either you print it out or have the wedding planner do so. Before the wedding have them assign a vocal friend as the facilitator, someone who knows both sides of the family well to help get things organized.
I like to work big to small so that I can release as many people as possible to go enjoy themselves for cocktail hour. I do every combination on two cameras, one close and wide and one farther back with a slightly longer lens. I overshoot the group shots to cover myself from people blinking or making weird faces or not looking at the camera.
I ask all the men to button their top buttons on their jackets and women to put their bags off to the side and for everyone to place their drinks off to the side and lastly sunglasses off. I make sure no one is standing directly behind me shooting over my shoulder to avoid people looking in the wrong direction, avoid collisions if I back up quickly and to save time so we can maximize our portrait session time. I politely ask everyone to stand off to the side and remind them that the couple will deliver the photos to them.
If you are using natural light, make sure you have a location scouted carefully and that the largest group will fit within your frame. Have the venue keep a ladder handy just in case.
12. Details
Besides the obvious of the rings, dresses, and shoes, ask the couple if they have any family heirlooms or any details that are special to them that they want you to focus on. I typically shoot all the details right when I arrive to check them off my mental shot list and this prevents me from forgetting anything.
13. Back It Up
If you are shooting solo itâs hard to back up as you go but try your best. If not, back up the second you get home or to your hotel room and put the images on multiple drives and in multiple locations. Meaning when you travel, one drive should be in one bag, and another drive on you or in a different bag. Dump each card one at a time onto separate drives. All this is tedious but you must do it, no exceptions.
14. How Close Can I Get?
I talk to the couple ahead of time. I tell them I get most of my best shots when I can get up close and personal. However, I also want to respect their space so I try to move in and out quickly and during the ceremony be conscious of blocking peopleâs views and of invading peopleâs space too much. Having a conversation ahead of time will help you avoid awkwardness later. Use your best judgment about gauging people and know when to give them some space and when itâs okay to get close.
15. Deadlines, Deliverable, and Retouching
Your contract should be clear about this but itâs helpful to remind people about things if it comes up. If someone says âoh he can just photoshop that guest in laterâ or itâs raining and the bride says â you can make it look sunny in photoshop rightâ be upfront and honest.
Regarding deadlines, donât miss your deadlines for any reason whatsoever.
16. Churches
Some churches restrict where you can shoot from. Ask ahead of time where you can and canât go and plan accordingly so you have the right lenses. The lighting can be tricky too, so experiment ahead of time.
17. Wedding Planners
If the wedding planner didnât hire you directly or refer you directly, you donât have to listen to them as if they are your boss. Relax wedding planners reading this, donât get angry at me just yet. The client is your boss for that day and that is where your loyalties lie and they are who you must answer to if you donât deliver.
Most planners are wonderful to work with and the good ones will make your life a lot easier but Iâve worked with bad ones too. Iâve had a wedding planner or 2 try to boss me around with telling me to get them shots of their setups while I should be shadowing the couple. I do my absolute best to get the wedding planner as many extra shots as I can but my priority is getting the best shots for the couple.
I once had a wedding ceremony run late and the wedding planner wanted to cut my portrait session short. The light was about to be perfect, it was hiding behind the cloud but I could clearly see it was going to emerge with glorious light beams. I was going to need an extra 15 minutes or so and I asked the couple directly if they would be ok with waiting it out. The wedding planner gave me a look of death, then off to the side she told me not to ask them anything schedule related directly, ask her first she insisted. I didnât allow myself to get bullied and the couple was more than willing to make their guests wait 15 minutes for their salads and guess what, they loved that shot. The wedding planner hated me but the couple loved me, I can live with that outcome.
18. Bite Your Tongue
Not literally, that would hurt. People are going to get drunk and some guests will just flat out be rude or condescending. Suck it up and donât cause any issues, itâs a wedding so smile and be happy and take it as a lesson in patience or taking the high road, or just punch a tree (sorry tree community) later or whatever you must do.
Note: Justin Mott does not endorse the abuse of trees or any plant life for that matter.
19. How to Deal With Photography Enthusiast Uncle Ned
Without failure, youâre going to run into that friend or relative with all the camera guy that says, âdonât worry I wonât be in your wayâ but inevitably they will be in your way. I typically address this in my initial talk but if it still happens just politely talk to that person and let them know you have a job to do.
While Iâm on this topic, if the venue has their own photographer they should never be shooting any situation with guests in the shot, basically the entire day. The occasional venue tries to sell the couple on âwe will get you extra shots for free.â Address this in that initial talk, the couple might not realize that this person could mess up your shots and gives you one more person to worry about. If they venue wants pictures of the set up for their own purposes thatâs fine but that photographer shouldnât be present when the ceremony starts.
Again, this is rare stuff but itâs all necessary because it does happen and it covers you.
20. Say Goodbye And Say Thank You
Donât sneak off at the end of the night, say a proper goodbye to the couple. Of course, some circumstances can prevent this but do your best. Also, if the video team was working around you all day, thank them for putting up with you.
21. No Excuses
Everything Iâve stated is all to be recommended and not demanded, except for the contract part. Donât use these as excuses for not getting everything you need to deliver a great selection of images for your client. At the end of the day, these things are just there to help set expectations and prevent problems. Things will go wrong, things discussed will be forgotten, etc, donât make excuses and do everything you can do get what you need and so with a smile and with good manners.
