Best Triathlon Bikes for Competitive Cyclists
The right triathlon bike could have a serious impact on your performance in competitive cycling. Several factors influence how well you can perform during an Ironman competition or a sprint event, and investing in the best triathlon bikes for your needs is one of them. With dramatic advancement over the years, we have seen the improvement in ergonomic triathlon bikes, speed- and aerodynamically-enhanced, improving a cyclist’s performance.
In this blog, we will discuss some of the best triathlon bikes close to the upcoming year 2024 while addressing which features are the most important ones during the purchase of a triathlon bike and discussing the best ones on the market.
Key Features to Consider in a Triathlon Bike
1. Fit Range and Frame Size
The right fitting is one of the most critical factors when you are in search of a triathlon bike. A tri bike that is a size too big or too small could lead to discomfort and a decrease in performance. Today, you can find many brands offering tri bikes with adjustable frame sizes so that you are able to set it up perfect for yourself in terms of comfort and a riding position that optimizes speed.
2. Integrated Hydration
For long races, hydration is absolutely crucial. Thankfully, most triathlon bikes have fitted hydration systems that enable a rider to drink without altering their position. Select a bike with suitable hydration equipment that does not interfere with your aerodynamics.
3. Aerodynamics
Aerodynamics is the most fundamental feature when it comes to a triathlon bike. The more aerodynamic the bike more speed can be attained with less effort due to lesser drag. Search for tri bikes having aero handlebars, deep-section wheels and slender frames to minimize drag.
4. Comfort and Stability
As stated before, a triathlon bike is needed for a long duration, thus it must be fast as well as comfortable to ride on. If the race is like an ironman endurance event, it will require a bike that is versatile and has a steady smooth ride. Reasonably sorted geometry greatly assists in addressing the fatigue problem.
5. Acceleration Stiffness
The rate of acceleration is dependent on how stiff is the triathlon bike’s frame. Stiff frame improves energy transfer which helps in attaining speed quicker. Ensure your bike provides responsive acceleration allowing high wattage outputs when necessary.
6. Managing Tightness
As a triathlon cyclist, you will appreciate good handling when moving in tight corners with a bike although maneuverability during difficult sections of a course remains equally paramount. These two concepts of stability and maneuverability go hand in hand with speed. Go for a bike that has nice steering response and is capable of going at higher speeds without losing confidence.
7. Ease of Assembly
When buying a bike from an online store or an imported bicycles dealer, make sure that the bike is easy to assemble. In the case of imported cycles, some come ready assembled while others don’t. If you are not familiar with tri or tt bikes for sale then buying one that is easy to put together makes a lot of sense as it will save you time and trouble.
8. Value
Lastly, it is essential to strike a balance between how much you are willing to spend and performance. Generally speaking, high end triathlon bikes tend to boast of the latest advancements in technology, but it is possible to find very good tri bikes for cheaper prices. Aim for bikes that value and respect costs, more so if you are new to this sport or more interested in shorter distances only.

7. Cadex Tri

Factors Influencing Your Choice
1. Race Distance
As mentioned earlier, several types of triathlon bikes are meant to be used for a specific distance. If sprint or Olympic-distance is the target, then choose a bike that is known for good handling and fast acceleration. For long events such as Ironman, try to look for a bike that is both comfortable and stable.
2. Budget Considerations
Bikes are available at various price ranges and your budget should allow you to easily bike that meets your requirements. Premium bikes tend to be at the higher end of the budget range but even low-cost options can offer basic characteristics. A bike that you can afford should be the one that you select.
3. Fit and Personal Preferences
What makes one triathlon bike more appealing than the other depends upon what makes you more comfortable, and how the bike performs while riding. Great fitting can help you find the right type of triathlon bike that requires balance.
Expert Tips for Competitive Cyclists
1. Pre-purchase Considerations
It’s important to find the right triathlon bike for you, but more paramount is to have a fitting session where a professional is able to fit you well. A fitting session will help you get the right shape and angle on your bike that will suit your body.
2. Maintenance Tips:
Every athlete understands the importance of well-maintained equipment as advised triathlon bike brings peak performance. Lubrication of the chain need to be done regularly, tire pressure must be checked from time to time, and hydration mechanisms must continue to operate correctly.
3. Upgrading Components:
Installing new components on triathlon bikes such as wheels, handlebars, or saddles improves the performance significantly. An overhaul to lighter and more aerodynamic components works wonderfully for higher speeds.
Conclusions:
There has been a lot of innovation in bicycles used for triathlon competitions, but the best triathlon bike for you in 2024 will be one that provides the best aerodynamics and comfort making you highly efficient. Whether it is imported bicycles or tri bikes for sale make sure to look for premier features that closely coincide with your race objectives. For Day 10: Travel, Simon's Month 2024 hosted by @youngroyals-events <33
Simon and Wille hike Salto Ángel (Angel Falls) in Venezuela.
Read on ao3 or below the cut!
“We’re almost there, long legs,” Simon teased, clutching the straps of his backpack tighter and looking down at the trail behind him.
“Easy for you to say after your fucking triathlon,” he puffed, leaning against the rail. Wille had been so tied up with the crown lately that he hardly had time to eat and sleep, and Simon only took a little bit of pride that he could outpace Wille on their jogs (and apparently hikes). He’d also developed a bit of a tummy, which Simon loved with all of his heart. Wille looked healthy and manly, not like his pale and anxious teenage self, and it made Simon so proud of how far they’d come.
“It was not a triathlon, Wille. It was a half marathon with an optional biking component at the end.” It was one of those marathons for charity, and Simon had only agreed to it as an excuse to spend time with Rosh and get out of the castle for something other than work. It also made Kristina happy; something about philanthropy and the children’s hospital that the marathon benefitted. While Simon did care about that, he thought there were perhaps better ways to contribute to the cause. Yet he didn’t mind the perks, and Wille certainly didn’t either.
“Whatever, come here,” Wille panted, finally gaining on Simon and leaning in for a sweaty kiss.
“Gross,” Simon laughed into his mouth, making no moves to stop it. Malin rounded the bend behind them. Simon had a feeling she was not his biggest fan at the present moment either.
“It’s just a little longer until we get to the lookout point. I promise.” He sounded more confident than he felt. Wille shucked his backpack onto the ground and reached for his water, looking out at the valley below them. He winced when he reached back down. Their backs were also not what they used to be.
“Let’s go then,” he smiled, bumping Simon on the shoulder and trailing Joakim.
Salto Ángel came back into view, impossibly tall and fast. The closer they hiked the louder it was, and the tighter mist clung to their clothes. Simon felt a small surge of pride that Venezuela was home to the tallest waterfall in the world. He had been planning to take Wille for the last couple of years, but the timing had never been right. They finally convinced Kristina to let them go, of course with a full security dispatch and the help of the Swedish embassy. They were just in time for the court’s slow season and the Southern hemisphere’s winter temperatures. Linda and Sara stayed behind for this particular adventure, likely preferring time with their family on the coast, but at that moment Simon wished they could’ve been there. The spray formed a thin layer on his face, hopefully masking the tears brimming behind his eyes.
Wille draped his arm across Simon’s back and tucked his head on his shoulder. “Thank you for sharing this with me,” he breathed. Simon turned and kissed the side of his head, lost for words. They stood there for minutes, taking in the sound of the waterfall and birdsong. Simon wondered how many people had bathed, drank, and frolicked in these waters before him; what kinds of legends or gods people found at the base. He felt such extreme longing, a difficult feeling that sat low in his stomach he was so used to ignoring. But here, with this view, in his motherland with the person he loved most, he felt surrounded by it.
Wille pulled away, gentling his phone from his pocket to take some pictures. After some scenic shots, he turned and took one of Simon, who quickly wiped away his tears. Malin had them pose in front of the falls, directing them into the spot with the best angle of the falls behind them. Suddenly, Wille told her to stop, then fumbling for something in his jacket pocket.
He pulled out a ring box and flipped it open. “Remember?” He asked Simon, grinning widely and reaching for Simon’s hand. Amidst the chaos of travel Simon had completely forgotten that Wille told him - no, promised him - they would take their engagement photos at the falls. Of course Wille schlepped their rings across the many flights and boat rides it took to get to this single hike.
Simon slid Wille’s ring onto his long finger, a simple yet beautiful white gold band with one gold accent that perfectly inverted his own gold ring with a white gold accent. He placed his hand over Wille’s chest, feeling the rise and fall of his ribs, the gentle beating of his heart. At each shutter of the phone camera, they moved slightly, looking at each other and kissing. Simon could’ve never in his wildest dreams they would be here, all these years later, in each other’s company like this. They made it.
Notes:
Thank you so much for reading! Fun fact: Salto Ángel, or Angel Falls, in addition to being the world’s tallest waterfall, is also inspiration for the magnificent waterfall in Pixar’s UP! I understand that travel to the falls is very difficult (lots of flights and boat rides), and there have also been a lot of socioeconomic and political challenges in Venezuela in recent years that I by no means wish to gloss over with this ficlet. However, plenty of people travel through all kinds of situations to be able to go to their homelands, despite how much stark privilege that entails. I hope that the people of Venezuela get justice (their upcoming elections are July 28th), and that the humanitarian crises will end. Fic sources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angel_Falls To learn more about Venezuela's humanitarian situation: https://www.hrw.org/world-report/2024/country-chapters/venezuela I also did not like much of the coverage I found, mostly from BBC and AP, it felt very clearly neoliberal and colonial in its messaging, so if anyone has any more resources or research, or anything else on the subject they want to share as long as it's not hateful, please feel free to post in the comments <3   Part 2 of this ficlet will be for Day 16: Venezuela!

Star Trek TNG and DS9 Crew Olympics
The summer Olympics sports each main crew member would be best at or most interested in. (Taken from the official 2024 sports list).
TNG
Jean-Luc Picard - Fencing (While he likes horses, this is clearly his favorite activity, and I don't see him wanting to really train a horse for all that).
William Riker - Beach Volleyball (He'd go for something team-oriented and this suits his casual fun-loving vibe).
Data - Climbing (The blend of physical ability and mental calculations would appeal most to him).
Geordi LaForge - Athletics Running (Seriously, LeVar Burton was a ridiculously speedy runner with any distance and ground, that I've worked it into my fics as a Geordi trait).
Beverly Crusher - Road Cycling (Something with a steady endurance feels right for her).
Worf - Athletics Hammer Throw/ Shot Put/ Javelin (Something to show off his strength and physical ability while keeping his probable feelings of not wanting to accidentally hurt anyone).
Deanna Troi - Artistic Swimming (Feels very "pretty" and also somewhat unusual).
DS9
Benjamin Sisko - Wrestling (Captain of the Starfleet Academy wrestling team).
Kira Nerys - Shooting (Give her a gun and targets, she'll be perfectly happy).
Jadzia Dax - Judo (She'd love to throw people around and maybe be thrown around herself).
Julian Bashir - Triathlon (Tennis is the obvious choice, but I think he'd like to push himself with running/swimming/biking).
Miles O'Brien - Canoe/Kayak (He loves doing this so much he keeps wrecking his shoulder).
Odo - Rowing (Relates to his kayaking outings with Miles, but also appeals to his sense of orderliness).
Ezri Dax - Rhythmic Gymnastics (Something fun and playing into her physique).
Feel free to add on with your thoughts and for other crews!

In light of current global events, what sports do you think pynch would play in an Olympics AU? I just know the olympic village is littered with lube and condoms
anon i LOVE this question! 😍 i am not a sports girlie but i think of this au often and i was just watching the womens skateboarding final and wowowow they were so talented jeez. okay lemme put everyone in a sport:
adam is a trihard triathlon kinda athlete imo he swims and bikes and runs. he does it all! 🏊🚴🏃
ronan is either tennis (cause canon) or boxing could be cool for him! esp if niall was an olympic boxer and declan is also competing 🥊🎾
gansey is rowing DUH 🚣
blue is a gymnast methinks! she’s tiny and can do flips and shit and calla is definitely her coach 🤸‍♀️🤸🤸‍♂️
noah is in skateboarding!! 🛹
henry could either be another rower orrrr gymnast orrrrrr even a coach imo. he’s got the managerial vibes to me. 🥇
but YES all of them in the olympics village on their cardboard beds in the best shape of their lives high off adrenaline from a win (or loss) and needing to get that pent up energy out somehow/where/w someone? i love olympics aus but alas i am sports illiterate so i cannot write one i can only observe.

2024: milestone after milestone
living with my partner after two years long distance was such a nice reward, and confirmed that everything was right
realised my dream of going to the australian open
and going to attica(!!) and having a kangaroo meat pie
before coming back to the table and getting engaged(!!!!!!)
unfortunately we wanted to elope but family had other ideas
leading us to plan our wedding in just three weeks
it was such a great day but yeah, not what a little girl dreams of
anyway!
turned 30 on the 2/2 - glamped/biked around riesling country in adelaide which was goooorgeous
i was conferred my phd on the 22/2 which was cool
recieved dean's commendation for outstanding theses
submitted our manuscript for publication after so much tweaking
married on the 3/3
so yeah it was pretty full-on time tbh
we packed up our entire home, facebook marketplace was our best friend
my husband flew to saudi two weeks later, sending us back into the trenches of long-distance with a new challenge of time zones
i started my long goodbye to alcohol on a trip with friends to kangaroo island - lots of wine, laughter, and swimming with dolphins!
packed up my suitcase, ready to live out of it for the next three months and moved back into my childhood room in brisbane
spent easter with my sister, our grandparents and their siblings which was so lovely
went to san diego for a conference and for some reason, we were invited to the first class bar area on the plane (i can only assume an attendant heard my colleague and i talking about our cancer research which was very unexpected and nice)
flew to sydney for two weeks to complete requested experiments from reviewers and said goodbyes to all my friends
and finally received my saudi visa after much faffing around
my first business class experience to saudi was the qatar qsuite and it was heaven 40k feet above earth
all our stuff from adelaide arrived a few days after me, i set up the entire house
the compound is amazing, so much green space and although it hit 46C in summer, the lack of humidity makes it bearable
lack of alcohol was hard at first but then you just don't seem to think about it? there are tough days where you wish you had a whiskey sure but you get through it
worked on the paper revisions back and forth for months on end
we went to paris and bordeaux just before the olympics and stayed in chateaus and drank beautiful wine and did lots of fine dining
the saudi way of life is very much "inshallah", it's not very conducive to a western way of working which has been a steep learning curve
being here finally gave me the TIME to plan, order and cook whatever my heart desired instead of feeling like a total chore and hindrance during my phd
we went to turkey and bought rugs, drank, explored the landmarks, and went back to my hammam that i dreamt about re-visiting since 2018
saudi racing is fun but as no drinking or gambling, you just sort of sit around and gasbag with friends the entire time hahaha
the women like to engage with me and ask lots of question and the kids like to show off their english and be super cheeky with me!
in general, saudi's are the kindest people and feel the need to impress! same with the pakistani and indian expats!
there is such a sense of non-urgency yet things happen at the last minute - it's truly a wonder
i don't dress much differently to australia which made me realise i am quite modest (and that's fine). i try not to wear an abaya to show expat women that you can still be #stylish
i recieved lots of compliments from saudi women on my outfits which makes me feel FANTASTIC
i did however have to buy new racewear for here ofc which is fine
we went back to paris for racing of the arc at longchamp and explored a bit more, caught up with friends, lots of good food and museums, climbed the eiffel tower etc.
started doing mini triathlons are managed to get a sub-1hr 400m swim/8km bike/2.5km run which i was stoked about
made friends with someone at the australian embassy which was been wonderful - we went to a gala dinner onsite and i think that's a once in a lifetime experience
flew back to australia for the holidays which was again, another insane trip of three weeks in a suitcase
brisbane for a few days, to adelaide for racing (we were guests of honor which was hilarious) and to catchup with our friends and chicken schnitzels; back to brisbane and then to sydney
for my graduation gift, we booked a hotel under the sydney harbour bridge which was like a staycation in our own city. that was such a treasured part of my year
the uni dress people gave me a faulty phd bonnet which was too late to be fixed which resulting in a botched graduation photo with VC :( i got it replaced it after the ceremony but i still haven't recovered from the embarassment and anger!!!!!!
we flew out that night to hong kong for the international racing and catch ups! saw romantic warrior win up close <3
and then flew home just in time for christmas (we had a moo deng angel for our fiddle leaf) and spent christmas at the ritz carlton in riyadh which was unparallelled luxury
oh the manuscript was finally published on the 12/12 in nature communications (v prestigious, v proud) but bc of the embargo, i missed out on doing all public inteviews and tv appearances as i was no longer in australia :---(((((( honestly, the whole process sucked and really jaded me as a scientist - i know it's publish or perish but they just make it so demanding and hard
also they charged us 10k USD to publish which is an actual joke as they don't do any print versions, we could used that to perform more experiments
oh the patent was finalised too so now i can say i have officially found a potential cure for cancer
in bed at 10:30pm on new years because honestly, i think we celebrated every week of this year in a different shape or form
2025
just not sure hey!
i can't seem to get a job here try as i might
going to sweden to mid-jan to ski (read: apres bc i don't ski lol) with friends from australia and america! i am scared of the cold but we shall see
saudi cup is a big time here as the richest horse race in the world
we may be moving compounds which is slightly annoying
our cancer therapy will move into clinical trials in the first half of the year so i am really hoping that we can do some good in the world and make a difference to some families
we have tickets to the imola and monaco f1 gps!!! hoping to do lake como between the racing and we have a yacht for monaco!!!!!!
we may be moving to *** mid-year but stay tuned/fingers crossed
but other than that, inshallah it will be a good year!

Tumblr media
Good morning!  I hope you slept well and feel rested?  Currently sitting at my desk, in my study, attired only in my blue towelling robe, enjoying my first cuppa of the day.
Welcome to August!  The eighth month of the year.
After breakfast, The Mighty Josiah and I went to the park.  I had promised him two hours as I had a Zoom 1-2-1 at 1.30.  It was 28 degrees, so I am noticeably redder!  Not brown, that would take a lot more sun and a miracle!  For lunch, Josiah wanted Burger King and, to avoid consulting a building society for another mortgage, I just bought lunch for him.  (I don’t really need any food!)
To supplement his education, his parents have invested in Kumon, to ensure the basics (English and maths) are solid.  Christ, judging by some of the posts and comments on social media, a lot of adults could benefit from Kumon!
So, while J did some Kumon, I did some writing!  I am definitely coming around to the idea of an exclusive window, probably seven days?  This non-fiction book may be a little too explosive for promotion and marketing, so I’ll just make it available for seven days and, when it’s gone, it will be gone!
Today will involve a lot of Zoom 1-2-1 meetings.  As you can imagine, Zoom meetings with me are very casual and informative.  All I’m trying to do is help people.  For me, in essence, this is the best part of the job: helping people.  When I joined the industry in 1981, I knew absolutely NOTHING!  Less than nothing!  I knew about music but I knew nothing about the industry, and no one offered to teach me!  If these students listen to me, I can help them!
When we came in from dinner last night, I caught up on the day’s highlights from the Olympics.  That quad sculls rowing gold had me on the edge of my seat, the diving girls were superb and I take my hat off to the triathlon medal winners for swimming in that dirty water!  And, no matter what people say, I think the BMX bike has a place in these games; pretty bloody exciting!
Have a throbbing and thrusting Thursday (with hopefully a few thrills through your thoroughfare?)  I love you all.

ranking the tdi challenges best to worst:
paintball deer hunter: I ACTUALLY LOVE THIS CHALLENGE SO MUCH like wouldn't that be so fun??? sorry but I LOVE this challenge
horror challenge: I think this one is universally loved like. what isn't fun about a little horror? it's also PERFECT for me because I LOVE the concept of horror but HATE actual gore. like the stick-together, classic tropes, ect. but I hate gore. so this was so fun for me!
cooking: I do really like cooking myself so this sounds so fun. team bonding and all that really.
tri-armed-triathlon: this is like one of the best episodes ever and the challenge is so cool. yeah.
trust challenge: also really fun I love mini-challenges like this. makes for fun dynamics as well.
cliff diving: it was definitely fun and a great intro to the show. the jumps characterized everyone, and the first two episodes are def some of my favorite.
boney island canoe thing: I really liked this one there was a lot of team bonding and just a fun challenge honestly.
phobia factor: facing your greatest fears? the challenge of all time.
camping in the woods: genuinely just sounds like fun. the scary stories were cool too. fun episode and challenge.
x-treme challenges: I love the mini-challenges they're so fun. this one isn't my favorite bc I think only the skiing one was actually fun the other two were meh.
talent show: obviously it's basic but it's a classic. you can't go wrong with a talent show. plus, you get to see what certain characters are good at and that's really fun.
awake-a-thon: had some of my favorite moments of the whole show, and also a great challenge for characterization. also just a fun challenge idea.
wheel of dares: def fun espec for final 3 like. yeah.
hide & seek: a classic game. basic but fun.
finale: it was good but I feel like the finales of every season were just. underwhelming. except for world tour.
animal hunt: I don't care about it that much.
chef's whole thing: idk it was good ig but like. idrc. the episode was really good but the challenge was meh.
dodgeball: really basic I don't really care about it.

the one where duncan got eliminated: whatever I'm out of here.
scavenger hunt: also just okay idrc.
brunch: I get it but ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew ew
10 second wheel of fortune: this one was actually so boring. only mini challenge episode that bores me like what.
bike challenge: OMG I saw this episode and was like "bike challenge! sounds so fun!" it was not fun. It was so poorly written. genuinely sucks. WHY WERE THE RULES LIKE THAT like there were so many other ways to make the challenge actually work I could go on for days. why did they care about passing the finish on each others' bikes? why does immunity matter when the last person is auto-eliminated? like OH MY GOD
.

if you can forgive the jockposting for a moment, i have found myself in what the kids call, An Situations.
so there is a triathlon, a race happening May 19th. It's a 400m swim followed by a 12 mile bike and then a 4.1 ish mile run. As tris go it's about as short and sweet as you can get and the atmosphere of this particular race is extremely casual. it's fun, grandmas do it in teams with their grandkids, people will take the entire day and complete it at a leisurely walking pace with snacks and potty breaks, it's chill.
its also somewhat of a landmark race. pre-covid registration opened 7 pm March 5th and all 1600 spots filled up by 705pm the same night. if you wanted to race you had to set several alarms for the registration and find a spot with fast internet. Since pandemic protocols went in there is now a virtual event, where you do the swim, bike, and run on your own time and submit your splits. which. yeah. okay. that is technically a solution but that's stretching the definition of a race while not meaningfully improving anything. but what it has done is significantly lessened the clamor around the in-person event..
which means that despite completely forgetting about registration a week ago there are still open spots. I love this race, I've done it for years. I like to think of it as my annual personal summer sport debut, because it falls right around my birthday and the end of break-up season. I don't do it every year because life happens and the registration debacle, but I've done it a lot.
however. despite being very much a personal best/ individual performance kind of thing, triathlons are best enjoyed with someone else. a race buddy, someone to chat with in the locker room and on the pool deck while you're waiting around, someone to cheer for, someone to get post-race chicken nuggets with. someone to, y'know, race. i am lacking.
everyone i have historically done this with has moved away/too many commitments/had babies/quit racing/ect. I can not bribe/blackmail/threaten/coerce/con any of my family members. I am not well situated to join a training group of people who are already going to do it. all my friends who do not do triathlons are aware of what a triathlon would entail and can not be convinced, despite this one being the super easy entry-level version.
so my conundrum is this. i have raced the full solo experience where I drive me and my gear to the race alone, get ready set and go, all by my onsies, and then clean up and go home. it kinda sucks. it's just a crowded sprint workout with an expensive tee shirt. I love racing and I love this race, but I'm not inclined to spend the time, money, and effort to do it without someone to do it with. WHICH IS MADE PAINFULLY ACUTE BY THE FACT THAT THERE IS THE OPTION TO GET ONE OF THOSE COVETED SPOTS THAT USED TO GET SNAPPED UP LIKE CANDY.

Assumption: You aren’t super athletic/muscular, though idk you also seem like someone who loves to hike and be outdoors so I could be very wrong
CORRECT
Athleticism is so relative, but where I live now, I am not. It's not even CLOSE. I am a weak little baby among titans. People are endeared, nay, fascinated. You don't ski double black diamonds? Why are you here? I live in a place where people move to for sport. Last summer, I went on a mountain biking date and pretended I had to go piss in the woods because I need to crouch down and maybe think about dying for a minute or two before continuing. I have neighbours in their seventies who could probably smoke me in cardio because they've been doing the same winter and summer recreation here for four or five decades while keeping up a farm.
I've done one ill-advised triathlon, and used to be on a roller derby team and strength train pretty consistently. I can trek long distance comfortably and chop wood and stuff! But I am not as swole as I should like to be. I feel like a kitten that's been taken away a bit too early from its mum. I am very small and ferocious and trying my best and also napping a lot, but one day! One day! I hope I shall be able to call this Incorrect.

Did I miss part of the course?
The last time I wrote, we had just bought new shoes and some new inserts. So how have they been doing? Well, there's been some good and bad. Katy is loving her new shoes, and has been making great progress with her running. In fact, she ran a Turkey Trot, in which she completed a 7km course in just about an hour. So proud! I think she was more shocked than anyone. At the end, she asked the organizers if she had missed part of the course, thinking she had skipped a lap or something. She started looking up the track because she just couldn't believe she had finished it so quickly! I opted not to do the Turkey Trot, in part because I hadn't been running yet, but also because it was freezing! It was about 28 degrees that morning, so I decided to sit that one out. That being said, I have FINALLY started to see some progress with my knee. I think the shoes were a bust for me, but I the knee wraps might actually be working, just to stabilize the patella. Strengthening the quads and doing my PT the last month or so has finally paid off as well. So, over the last couple of weeks, I've started to jog on the treadmill, and I've been able to slowly up my intervals to almost two minutes. I'm just so happy to be finally making some progress towards my running goals.
What else? Well, I hit 40km on the bike, taking about 105 minutes to do so. That's the distance I need to hit for the triathlon, so it's satisfying to hit that mark. In the pool, we've been starting some new drills, each one becoming more challenging than the prior set of drills. But what is more is that we started on breaststroke. I had the naivete to think that breaststroke was an easier stroke, but I blame Katy for that. She calls it a "recovery stroke". What the hell is she talking about? It's like I'm just flailing my legs in the water - I'm not even sure they're doing anything. The motion is really awkward and the instructor said it's a really technically challenging stroke, and the hardest to master. I've started a few drills to try and work it into my swimming routine. Katy is already pretty smooth with it, but she's started working on her butterfly. I tried 25m of it, and it was one of the most physically exhausting things I've ever done. I mean, my god... how does anyone do 200m of that? That's going to require A LOT of core strength.
We've also been back to play badminton a few more times, continuing to work towards being able to play a competent match. We're getting there. Slowly...
The goals for December are 2.5km running. Katy has already hit that and I probably won't get close to it quite yet, but if I can get to 1km by the end of the month, I'll be quite pleased. Goals in the pool are 750m freestyle and 100m breaststroke, and we want to hit 50km on the bike. I'm still trying to push Katy to get back on the bike. One of these days... We'll probably do another swim lesson towards the end of the month and work on butterfly. On the schedule, we had our first events scheduled for the end of the month! Those include the 50m free, 100m free, and 200m free. We'll see if we do it this month or push it into January, but we could probably do those soon. We need to investigate the new 50m pool and see when the longer lanes are open and if they'll let us use the starting blocks (which I still need to learn how to dive off of). We'll probably push our badminton matches until January too just to try and master them as best as we can.
We keep pushing forward. I'll write again in a few weeks!

Are Triathlon Training Camps Beginner-Friendly?
If you think about starting triathlons but aren't really sure where to get started, you may consider joining a triathlon training camp. With all the intensive swimming, cycling, and running, though, are the camps even beginner-friendly?
Triathlon training camps are structured programs catering to building up one's competencies in the three core triathlon sports: swimming, biking, and running. These usually last from a couple of days to a full week, with expert coaches leading them. Do not be concerned; Mallorca Triathlon Training Camp will address every level of athletes, including complete beginners.
Do the camps cater to all fitness levels?
You won't be thrown into the deep end literally or figuratively at the triathlon training camps. If you are still mastering the basics or building up your endurance, the camp will adjust its approach to meet you where you are. More importantly, you will be surrounded by other participants learning themselves, so really, there isn't an intimidation factor.

Lactate Threshold Test: A Comprehensive Guide for Triathletes Time matters in triathlon performance. Each second can make the difference between achieving a personal best and hitting the wall. A lactate threshold test gives athletes vital insight into their body's unique response when exercise intensity increases. Many triathletes rely on perceived effort or basic heart rate zones for training. However, precise lactate threshold testing provides a scientific way to boost performance in swimming, cycling, and running. The results from both laboratory procedures and field testing methods can help you steer your training plan for more effective workouts. Understanding Lactate Threshold Basics The science behind lactate threshold plays a vital role in maximizing our triathlon performance. Let's dive into this fundamental concept that influences our training and racing in all three disciplines. What is Lactate Threshold and Why It Matters Lactate threshold marks the exercise intensity where our body produces more lactate than it can remove. Athletes can maintain effort at this threshold for about 30-45 minutes while running and a bit longer on the bike. This threshold becomes especially important to triathletes because it determines sustainable race pace, particularly in Olympic-distance events. Lactate threshold's significance stems from its direct link to endurance performance. Better training allows us to work at higher intensities without crossing our threshold, which leads to faster race times in swimming, cycling, and running. The Science Behind Blood Lactate Production Our muscles create lactate even while resting, with levels usually between 1-2 mmol/L. This production rises as our bodies work harder during exercise. In stark comparison to this popular belief, lactate isn't the cause of muscle fatigue. It actually serves as a fuel source and helps maintain our muscle's acid-base balance. Several factors influence lactate production: - Exercise intensity and duration - Individual fitness level - Muscle fiber type composition - Training status and adaptation Different Types of Thresholds in Triathlon Triathlon training involves several important thresholds: Aerobic Threshold (AeT): This level shows where our anaerobic system starts contributing more to energy production, though aerobic metabolism remains dominant. Long-course triathletes can sustain this intensity for 3-4 hours, making it essential to their performance. Anaerobic Threshold (AT): This occurs when the body can't clear lactate as fast as it accumulates, marking the shift from steady-state to non-steady-state exercise. Sprint and Olympic-distance triathletes need to focus on this threshold as it matches their race intensity. Functional Threshold: This practical measurement approximates our anaerobic threshold for each discipline. Cyclists often use Functional Threshold Power (FTP), while runners might refer to Critical Speed or Threshold Pace. These thresholds guide how we structure our training effectively. To cite an instance, see how half-Ironman preparation emphasizes aerobic threshold development, while sprint-distance athletes train near their anaerobic threshold. Training improves the relationship between these thresholds. Our aerobic threshold meets closer to our anaerobic threshold as we get fitter, creating what we call the "threshold window." This adaptation lets us maintain higher intensities longer and directly enhances our race performance. Laboratory Testing Protocols Lab testing gives us the most accurate way to measure our lactate threshold and provides precise data to optimize training. Let's look at how controlled testing in a lab environment can give us reliable results. Step-by-Step Lab Testing Process Here's the equipment we need before testing: - Lactate analyzer and test strips - Heart rate monitor - Exercise equipment (treadmill, swim ergometer, cycle ergometer) - Blood sampling supplies - Timer or stopwatch - Recording sheets The process starts with a proper warm-up period of 10-15 minutes at low intensity. This vital step lets our oxidative energy pathways reach their best capacity. It also helps reduce any anxiety-related lactate production that might affect our results. Here's how the main testing protocol works: - Start at a low intensity (around 100-125 watts for cycling) - Bump up the workload every 3-4 minutes - Take measurements in the last 30-60 seconds of each stage - Keep going until we see by a lot more lactate buildup - Write down all data (power/speed, lactate reading, heart rate, RPE) at each stage Blood Sampling Techniques and Best Practices Getting blood samples right is essential for reliable results. We clean the sampling spot really well with alcohol and let it dry fully before collection. We always wipe away the first drop of blood since it has tissue fluids that could mess up our sample. The best results come from consistent sampling methods throughout the test. Your finger or earlobe needs to be warm for good blood flow. Interpreting Laboratory Test Results We look at our results using several proven methods. The Modified Dmax method works great to match sustainable race pace, especially for Olympic-distance triathletes. This method finds our threshold by measuring the maximum perpendicular distance between the lactate curve and a line that connects our first and final measurements. Our data shows two important transition points: - LT1 (aerobic threshold): The point where lactate starts rising above baseline - LT2 (anaerobic threshold): Where lactate builds up by a lot more These breakpoints help set our training zones and find the best race intensities for all three disciplines. Comparing results over time shows how much our lactate threshold has improved, which suggests better end Results Interpretation Pitfalls We often face several traps when we look at our lactate threshold test results. Our biggest mistake comes from relying on fixed lactate values (like 2mmol/L or 4mmol/L) as universal markers. These numbers show population averages and don't reflect our individual physiology. Other interpretation errors we often see include: Testing Environment Impact: Lab versus field testing conditions can give us different results. The same power output might show different lactate readings based on temperature, humidity, and elevation. Individual Variability: Our lactate response changes with nutrition, fatigue, and stress levels. We need several tests under similar conditions to get reliable baseline values. Progress Assessment: Looking at improvements can trick us when we see changes in our lactate curve. A leftward change doesn't always mean better fitness - it might show incomplete recovery or inconsistent testing. Understanding these common mistakes helps us get accurate, useful data from lactate threshold testing. Regular testing with the right protocols lets us track real improvements in our triathlon performance. Using Test Results in Training Our ability to turn lactate threshold test results into training zones is vital to boost performance. Let's see how we can get the most from our threshold data in swimming, cycling, and running. Setting Training Zones Based on Threshold Lactate threshold test results are the life-blood of creating precise training zones. These results help us build individual-specific intensity frameworks that optimize training adaptations. Here's an example of zone structure based on threshold values: Zone Intensity% of Threshold Primary Use Z1 Recovery 100% High-intensity intervals Periodizing Training Around Threshold The most effective threshold-based training uses strategic periodization. Our training usually follows a polarized or pyramidal model. The choice depends on race distance and current phase. These factors matter in threshold-based periodization: - Keep 75-85% of training below threshold - Add specific threshold sessions in build phases - Modify intensity distribution based on race distance - Plan for individual recovery needs - Track adaptation through regular assessment Base phases need sub-threshold work to build aerobic capacity. Race season preparation requires more specific threshold sessions that match target race intensities. This progression optimizes both aerobic and anaerobic energy systems. When to Retest Your Threshold Regular threshold testing will give a precise picture of our training zones as fitness improves. We test every 6-8 weeks, but timing varies based on several factors: - Training Phase Impact: Maintenance phases every 6-8 weeks - Performance Changes: Notable improvements or drops in training performance - Recovery Status: Full recovery must happen before testing - Race Schedule: Tests must align with key events Scheduled tempo workouts serve as informal threshold checks. Heart rate response during these sessions shows when zones need updates without full threshold testing. Recovery weeks give us a chance to do shorter threshold tests. We focus on disciplines showing the most change. This method keeps zones accurate while minimizing testing's impact on training. Each discipline - swimming, cycling, and running - can show different threshold changes. One sport might improve faster than others. Sport-specific testing and zone setting become essential because of these individual responses. Sport-Specific Applications A triathlete's success depends on becoming skilled at the unique threshold characteristics of each discipline. Our testing shows that lactate threshold appears differently in swimming, cycling, and running. Each sport needs its own approach for the best performance. Swimming Threshold Considerations Swimming threshold tests need special attention to technique before we look at metabolic measurements. Poor stroke mechanics can hide true threshold capabilities. Technical proficiency must come first for meaningful testing. These key factors matter for swimming threshold assessment: - Stroke efficiency and mechanics - Pool versus open water variations - Upper body muscular endurance - Technical limitations versus metabolic capacity Our initial swimming test protocol uses critical velocity testing, which links closely to lactate threshold. Time trials at 200m and 400m distances help calculate threshold pace. A swimmer that demonstrates excellent form we introduce testing on the swim ergometer. Conclusion Lactate threshold testing is the life-blood of triathlon training success. We have a detailed understanding of threshold testing protocols that range from laboratory measurements to field assessments. This knowledge helps us train smarter in swimming, cycling, and running. Experience shows that athletes achieve meaningful performance improvements through accurate testing, proper interpretation, and sport-specific application of results. Success comes from more than just running tests - it's about using the results strategically. Athletes maintain optimal training zones that grow with their fitness levels through careful periodization and regular retesting. Each sport needs its own approach, which makes sport-specific threshold training vital to succeed in triathlons. Third Coast Training provides both Lab Testing and Field Testing Options. You can schedule a consult to discuss your training needs. The right threshold data and proper training zones help athletes push their limits while avoiding overtraining. This approach leads to achieving performance goals in swimming, cycling, and running. https://thirdcoasttraining.com/2021/01/12/lactate-threshold-testing/ Read the full article
