her fondest memories were composed of moments heavy with cigarette smoke, bright purple nail-polish, the scent of burning sage and the beatles. her parents were big on that whole aesthetic, and phi loved everything about it. she remembers sitting on her father’s lap as her mother danced in the middle of their living room to “yellow submarine”, skirts swooshing against her legs, smile bright and wide against the candlelight. her father would wrap his fully tattooed arms around her and laugh full and loud and she would feel safe. she would feel loved. she would feel happy. that was home.

her parents were good people with bad habits, that was how she liked to describe them.

“keep the car door locked, phi. open it only when you see us.” her mother would tell her, hands on both sides of her face as her father jimmied the lock off the door of a particularly large house. phi would nod and smile in obedience before watching her parents tip-toe up the cobblestone pathway of other people’s homes, coming back with sacks upon sacks of shiny objects that phi wasn’t allowed to touch. then they would drive away and head home, “hey jude” playing softly on the radio.

her parents get caught when she’s around thirteen years old. she’ll never forget the look on her father’s face as he’s forced to the ground by men with guns, her mother screaming for them not to take her daughter. “she didn’t do anything! she didn’t know anything!” it echoed in her head like a broken record, throat raw as she tried to claw her way to get to them, only to have to watch them leave her behind on the back of a squad car. that was the day her world went off kilter.

she doesn’t do well in foster care. they call her ‘the runner’ because she always manages to wiggle her way past her foster guardians to visit her parents in jail. time after time, she would find them, talk to them, beg them to take her home because she didn’t like her ‘new parents’. there was always something wrong with them. they didn’t like beatles. they took away all her healing crystals. they wouldn’t let her dye her hair. “they aren’t you…” she just wanted to go home.

she gets adopted at fourteen, and she’s almost positive the walters see her as more of a pet than a daughter. they’re blonde, just like her, and she thinks they’ve adopted her mostly because she looks good with the rest of their perfectly pristine furniture. she hates them almost immediately, but they’re definitely her ticket out of foster care, so she rides it out for a while. they take her ‘home’ and they’re probably the blandest people she’s ever met. the antithesis of her true parents. her hatred for them grows, and she doesn’t even feel bad for pocketing whatever valuable item she might find.

by the time she’s eighteen, she saves up (steals) enough money to pay for a terrific lawyer for her parents. she hasn’t seen them as much as before, but god she’s so close to getting them out, getting them home. she’s sure they wouldn’t mind that it’s been only a few months since her last visit. they’ll forgive her. they always do. she makes her way to where they’re being held with high hopes and a warm heart. she leaves with mascara running down her cheeks and trembling legs, escorted by more than a few police officers, reminiscent of the day they took her parents away from her.

death penalty is legal in about thirty states. south carolina is one of them.

she runs away not too long after. she has more than enough money to get her by for a few more months, but by the time she gets to louisiana, she only has enough money to pay rent for another two. she pokes her nose into a couple of job openings, attempts to waitress for a bit (she ends up being fired on account of burning some customers with spilled coffee) and tries her hand at retail (she gets caught stealing a few earrings), before finally making her way to the front desk of an auto-shop that may grows to be her saving grace.

for the first time in a long time… she doesn’t want to run away.

her fondest memories were still heavy with cigarette smoke, and painted nails (her own, long and noisy against counter tops). they let her play the beatles and they don’t take away her sage, and things… things are good. now though, there’s the sound of loud motorcycles revving and the nose-wrinkling scent of wax. there’s nights spent guarding the door and the clinking of glasses swimming with whiskey… and it was home… it was now her home.

( + ) eccentric - if there was one thing her parents have ingrained in her system, it was that individuality should be a pillar trait in one’s psyche. be colorful, be loud, be you. go against the grain and make sure people knew who you were while you did it. phi was more than happy to comply, of course. from her fashion, to her mannerisms, to her beliefs, there was not an inch of conformity to be found if she could help it. she enjoyed bright colors and long nails, ostentatious outfits and odd knick-knacks. also, prepare to be blessed with sage when you enter the auto-shop, she has a few rolls hidden under her plants.

( + ) charming - she flourishes at the front desk for a reason. she’s a tad bit of a talker, but surprisingly not the obnoxious kind. when you’re in foster care, you tend to meet a lot of people, take notice of their ticks and understand how to read them. because of this, she adapts herself to each person, tickling every nerve for easy charming. when asked how she does it so effortlessly, she jokes that she’s cast a spell on the free mints she gives them.

( + ) cunning - you don’t get away with stealing from your adoptive family for two years without having a little meat up in that old noggin. phi lacked many things. she wasn’t the strongest, wasn’t the best at school, wasn’t the prettiest, but if there was one thing she knew how to do, it was slither her way through situations in a very machiavellian fashion. be wary of her smile, for it holds more than mirth on many occasions.

( - ) reckless - despite her skill in evading trouble, she does little to avoid it altogether. she’s more than reckless with her decisions. she enjoys to steal when upset with someone, and she does so without thinking of the consequences. her decisions are made almost purely out of emotion and she sees no reason to change that part of herself. it gets her into more trouble than you would think, and sometimes her smile won’t get her out of it.

( - ) tactless - what gets her in trouble most of the time is her tongue. why? she can never seem to hold it. what comes into mind is exactly what she says, and it doesn’t matter who she’s talking to. whatever authority you might have, she doesn’t feel the need to put a filter, and that more than anything may lead to her demise if not careful.

( - ) manipulative - she knows how to play people, knows how to be the puppet-master when no one expects it from her. she hides behind sweet smiles and carefully picked words, and most of the time, her dirty work is done by someone else because of a quick kiss and a flutter of her eye-lashes.

Caelum works at the tattoo shop with Carina, Jalev works at the flower shop next door.

Jalev is best friends with Carina, who keeps trying to convince them to get a tattoo

They tell her that if she can show them a good design that they like then they'll cave.

Carina is obsessed. She spends all of her free time trying to come up with a good design, but nothing works.

So she tells Caelum about the deal, and he starts helping draw up sketches and designs.

(He's never met Jalev, so he's just going based off of what Carina tells him.)

He's asking her questions all the time and he's not sure at what point it stops being about the designs. He starts seeing things during his day and thinking 'ha, I bet Jalev would like that!' But he can't exactly say why he thinks that.

He finally gives Carina his design, a little bouquet of flowers with a ribbon around them that has a quote from Jalev's favorite book on it.

Jalev loves it when Carina shows it to them and agrees to come in that weekend to have it done.

They hand the design to Caelum who grins and says "Hey! You picked my design!"

And of course then they fall in love and live happily ever after the end

Avanda's would say 'at your service, m'lady' which would really annoy her. As a princess, everyone introduces themselves like that, so that's no help to her.

Ewan's would then probably be 'Oh please don't call me that, and I'm perfectly capable of taking care of myself.' He serves Avanda's family for years, and as a guard fits into the 'silent guardian' for a very long time. He works with her for years, but doesnt actually speak to her for a very long time. He knows that it will be her to say those words to him though.

Nyar's would say 'Yes Captain' He's honestly more excited to find that he'll be promoted to Captain than he is about finding his soulmate.

Carina's would be something kind, 'I believe you.'

Thane's would be "Shakespeare? Really?" So he tries to only quote Shakespeare to the people that he thinks could be the one. This just means that he quotes Shakespeare to anyone and everyone he finds attractive.

What is the dorkiest thing Kell has ever done? The gentlest thing Doc Mercy has ever done? The angstiest thing Joey has ever done? The dumbest thing Sebastian has ever done? Your favorite thing that Thane or Ariel have ever done?

These are like the BEST questions holyshit.

UHM.

Kell is actually a giant dork. Giving piggyback rides and trying to learn to sexydance come to mind. He was also best friends with a mini dairy cow when he was a kid, and he has recently spent some time making his friends cute smells-nice gifts he has yet to hand out that are intended to help keep them safe.

Oh maaaan, I cannot even count the number of times Doc Morgan has patiently and tirelessly worked to put someone back together. When Thane took a silver bullet ricochet to the skull, Morg stayed right by his side for three days, providing medical support until he’d finished regenerating and regained consciousness. He’s creepy, but he’s a good doctor. He works his ass off to help his patients meet their treatment goals, whether that’s a fully functional transplanted demon eye or a complete overhaul of the ol’ meat sack’s secondary sexual characteristics. He cares about his job and his patients. He might find their low-level pain kind of funny and their squeamishness alternately hilarious and aggravating, but genuine suffering, or the people he has chosen to care about being unhappy in their bodies or life circumstances, it does bother him a lot. He’s not a bad guy. He’s just selective in who he regards as worth his time. Ranking highly on the “look how soft”ness scale is the so fucking careful way he treated Danny when Danny was dealing with discontinuation effects from the benzodiazepines the vampires had him on during his captivity in Houston. He was the one who rang Sebastian’s bell about Danny needing a shitton of actual therapy, not just . . . whatever it is Sebastian does where he can make you not feel like shit just by touching you, and who suggested using Sebastian’s emotional manipulation the way researchers have been using MDMA in therapy for PTSD. He’s a good egg, even if you wake up from sleepovers at his house with rude Sumerian words tattooed on your gall bladder. There were demons in there and he was just trying to help out.

I think Joey had a major angst montage after her mom died and she had to quit school and come back to take care of her kid brother. Like, she was happy to do it and it was the beginning of a great thing, she wound up opening her own tattoo shop, but it was a painful time. Picture her in Draculaura pink and black, kneeling on her mother’s grave and sobbing “I don’t know how to do this!” and then it starts raining. I mean, that’s not a cheerful image, but man, she had a rough time for a while. She doesn’t do the humorous kind of angst. She just isn’t constitutionally suited to brooding.

My fave thing Thane has ever done is probably getting caught in the shower singing that Fireflies song. Thane cannot sing. Mattie caught him making . . . song-like noises . . . and was utterly charmed. Thane was mortified, but also cracked up. There was a whole dynamic there I won’t go into but the gist of it is that it was really sweet and slightly vulnerable.

My fave thing Ariel ever did was . . . wow, it’s hard to pick. Tabletop Ariel? Maybe the super-gross “forearmed” pun he made at Eddie after his (Ariel’s) severed, semi-digested arm hit him (Eddie) in the face. He laughed himself sick, threw up a lot because seeing the arm was just a little disturbing, then went and blew up the bad guy. Maybe the time he fed Twizzlers to a dragon. Non-tabletop? IDK, probably how he falls in love with chickens really easily, but his affection for a big Dorking rooster named Captain Dorkington McNugget was not returned, and he got attacked a lot. Also, literally his entire wardrobe is fantastic. He has two settings: “Ridiculous but Also Ridiculously Attractive” and “Post-Apocalypse and Apocalyptically Hot”. The sheer number of stupid tee shirts he owns gives me life.

ETA: NO!!! No my fave thing Ariel has ever done is definitely work at Penguin Hut!

DA RP Write-up #13.1

Our crew is back again with a vengeance. I’m running this campaign, though for the middle part I’ll be handing the reigns over for Boshara’s player in an experimental move called “I want to play as Cahair more”. :D But yes, it is time for that Avvar campaign I’ve been planning on since last December. I feel very prepared which is a new and exciting feeling. Let’s see how our heroes fared in the Southern Wildlands. First they gotta get there though, and that was like half of the session, so let’s start with that.

Before even that, gotta note that I asked previous GM and Cahair got some new tattoos. Very small, since there wasn’t much time, but tattoos none-the-less. He now has some new ones on the back of his neck.

Character goal “Cover this boy from head to toe with tattoos” is on the go.

Shortly after leaving Tevinter, Randy takes our crew to the captain’s cabin to discuss the next move. He, as we know, needs to return to Orzammar and he had promised to take our heroes with him next time.

But before he can just waltz back in, he needs to find out more about the fertility rune his dad was making, mainly how he can make more of them.

That means, we got to visit some Avvars.

Cahair is immediately onboard, since he has Avvar friends in the south, so finding them won’t be a problem.

Humbert and Boshara especially are a bit miffed by this detour, but since it seems to be the only way, we all agree to this plan.

A further motivator is the fact that our ship is running out of lyrium. All the damage the ship took in Tevinter made us lose a good chunk of our stocks, and it doesn’t look like it’ll last very long.

There’s only two people who absolutely need the lyrium; Humbert, being a templar and Konstantine, bc he would like to stay awake.

Elspet would need it for healing too, if there are accidents.

Severe rationing is issued and enforced by Kanuuna. Things still look pretty dire by the time our heroes get to Ferelden.

It will take us about 3 months to get there, which means 3 months worth of ship-upkeep, namely food and crew’s pay. Let’s make some money, shall we?

Our heroes first stop at Rivain.

Humbert gets some passengers on board.

They are a family looking for adventure, so our crew does their best to entertain.

Randy does some intel gathering on what would sell well in Antiva, and because of that information Elspet finds her new calling in perfume-making.

Alf and Boshara... contribute. Namely they pretend to be beggars.

Next up it’s Antiva.

Our heroes buy some wine from there to get to sell in Ferelden.

Alf goes and gets a letter from Arkaitz, which delights him to no end. He also goes and sells the perfume to our friend Berengrad the banker, who pays for them handsomely.

Konstantine takes Humbert back to Varjokaupunki to try to get some lyrium.

They find out that something is going on with the Orzammar’s carta, as the lyrium shipments have stopped. Due to that lyrium prices are at all time highs.

They get few bottles anyway.

Boshara... contributes. She tries her hand at pretend-fortune-teller, gets in trouble and spends an evening in jail.

We have decided to try to make jewelry out of the gem stones we got from Berengrad as part of Alf’s inheritance.

Cahair designs them, finding a new hidden talent for jewelry design. He mostly draws inspiration from elven motifs.

Randy makes them. Elspet helps, since Randy has been a weapon smith before, not a jeweler.

The first two fail out of the bunch, but there’s some genuinely fantastic ones out there. Most notably Randy sets the storm opal we got into a white gold fitting. That will bring us big money if we manage to find a good enough buyer for it.

Then final stop is Kirkwall.

Alf finds out more about the Orzammar’s carta’s situation. They haven’t been heard about in a while, and people don’t know what’s up. There’s some lyrium, but even this close it isn’t getting much cheaper, and our heroes really don’t have the funds.

Humbert finds new passengers and gets into a street fight for four gold. ...Worth it?

He also tries to get in contact with some of the templars, but Kirkwall’s templar-commander is rather strict, so there’s no luck.

Randy goes to meet our old friend Riki and uses her contacts to sell some of the jewelry he made.

Elspet goes to visit an old friend, the elf from the market stalls. She agrees to part with some of her herbs, if Elspet makes a perfume for her, which she does.

Boshara gets herself some magical armor, being the first one in our group to do so.

Our heroes hop off near West Hill. Kanuuna will be in charge of the ship and Jelaina will be in charge of money gathering, while our heroes are gone. Lumme has been proven responsible enough, and is given charge of the mages, seeing that due to the lyrium situation Konstantine is barely awake more than few hours/day.

Out of the crew Pitkä-Breck and Merle will be coming with us to Orzammar.

It has been a while since our heroes (aside from Elspet and Cahair) visited Ferelden. There has been some changes. Namely Arl Howe has quietly resigned and moved his family to Free Marches, probably because of the information our heroes uncovered about his nasty human-trafficking businesses. His son, Nathaniel, has apparently been given to the templars.

At West Hill our heroes do some personal shopping: tent, bedrolls, walking shoes.

Humbert and Cahair get into a fight bc Humbert calls Avvars barbarians, and neither of them have the patience. It ends with Humbert going to be a crank outside.

Since he’s missing out on the shopping, Cahair buys him the shoes and makes Boshara deliver them to Humbert.

Humbert is so very happy at Boshara about the gift, that she doesn’t tell him they’re from Cahair.

Our heroes rent a cart, put Barbamama, the bronto, in front of it and leave towards Redcliffe.

Cahair tells a bit more about Avvar-customs to our heroes, namely that they use patronymics/matronymics. Inspired by this, everyone tries to see what theirs would be. Alf Sensen brings everyone a lot of delight.

The talk turns to Boshara’s mother. Namely Humbert wants to know how much she knows of her and if they had any contact.

Boshara admits that she knows very little. She learned a lot more from realizing that Cahair’s dad was her mom’s brother, than from the Chantry folk.

Oh yeah, Cahair and Boshara are cousins. Now everyone knows.

Cahair says that maybe they should visit their parents’ clan one day to find out more. Boshara isn’t sure whether they’d like her there, her being a half-elf. Cahair says it depends a lot on the circumstances.

This brings us to wonder whether Boshara’s dad was another mage or a templar, and the power imbalances in templar-mage relationships.

Humbert gets really flustered by this, and the conversation shuts down quickly afterwards.

Our heroes leave Barbamama, Merle and Pitkä-Breck to Redcliffe and head out to the wildlands by foot.

They travel for several days before Cahair announced that they’re getting close. Soon they spot an Avvar hunting group in the distance.

Cahair goes to talk to them, and brings back one, Dara Tyrdirsen, the thane’s (who’s Cahair’s personal friend) son.

Boshara is immediately enamored by his tallness and muscles.

The conversation goes south immediately since Randy introduces himself first. Dara starts acting much more stiffly then, saying that his mother would no doubt want to talk to them.

So off towards the Steppenwolf Hold we head.

Cahair asks what Randy’s dad did, bc clearly it was something wrong, and Randy says he doesn’t know.

Boshara picks some flowers to give to Dara later. Elspet tries to help but she’s too medically oriented to pick pretty plants instead of useful plants

We reach the Steppenwolf Hold and are guided to one room, where Thane Tyrdir Allasdotten meets visitors.

Soon she arrives, a tall red-headed woman, followed by a wolf.

She stops to hug Cahair, while the wolf is very curious about Randy and Aarli Hauveli.

Tyrdir asks of Randy’s intentions and his father’s fate. Randy admits readily he has no idea what his father exactly did, just that he made some fertility runes with the Avvar’s help.

Tyrdir tells that Mandulfr has stolen a god, namely Rilla of the Fireside, the goddess of fertility.

She says that there’s a witness to this in her hold and goes to get him, so they can hear the whole story.

The man Tyrdir brings back is a tranquil mage by the name of Kaino. He is from Kinloch Hold, and Boshara knows him well. Randy also remembers him. He recounts the tale of Mandulfr’s antics.

The group that went to Rilla’s cave, consisted of five people: Mandulfr; Runa, who was playing Mandulfr’s wife; her brother Ivar; an Avvar-guide by the name of Asta and Kaino.

Asta brought them near Rilla’s cave and told they should get some offerings, so Mandulfr ordered her to get them. She brought some nugs, but Mandulfr didn’t think it was good enough, so she went out and got a boar.

They entered the cave and the first room was a lake, which they had to cross by certain stepping stones.

Asta helped Runa and Kaino over, and while she was doing so, Mandulfr stabbed Ivar and pushed him into the lake.

Upon hearing that Ivar had accidentally dropped into the lake, Asta jumped after him and almost drowned, had it not been for Mandulfr.

They didn’t tell Runa about Ivar’s death, saying he decided to stay behind.

The next room was the offering room. Mandulfr ordered Kaino, who couldn’t see in the dark, of course, to stay at the room’s entrance while the others went to give the gifts.

While Runa was giving her gift, Mandulfr stabbed Asta and rolled her off the cliffside.

When Runa came back, he claimed Asta had gone ahead of them. Then he made her drink poisoned wine.

THE END.

Kaino tells that he doesn’t exactly remember what happened at the inner sanctum of Rilla’s cave, but that the Avvar were rather pissed off when they came back, and Mandulfr left Kaino behind, presumably as a distraction to help his own escape.

Tyrdir has a proposition to make. It’s clear (to her at least) that Randy, by the virtue of being the inheritor of his father, will have to atone for his deeds.

She asks that Randy takes a pilgrimage to Rilla’s cave and release Rilla from the rune she is trapped in.

After that he may ask her if she is willing to help with making more fertility runes.

As Tyrdir wishes Randy would do this pilgrimage of his own volition, because he respects Rilla and wants to wipe out his father’s crimes, and not because the Avvar want to, she offers Cahair as a guide and Kaino as a help for Rilla’s release.

Randy agrees to this, and everyone else says they’ll come along too.

Now our heroes have their mission all set out. But before they can leave, they’ll have an evening to get to know some Avvar-folk. We’ll see how that goes in the next exciting episode.
