What's Going Through SH’s Head Right Now 🤔
He may be overthinking it, feeling stressed, or even drinking a bit, which caused him to post the Forbes article from 26th November 2023, on his IGS.
Just to clarify, The Sassenach Blended Scotch Whisky won The World's Best Scotch Whisky award just in Singapore 2023 🇸🇬 The award was presented by the Tasting Alliance, who are well-known by SH and don't require more lengthy introductions.
In 2019, Tasting Alliance created the SWSC, which stands for the Singapore World Spirits Competition. This organisation is responsible for organising the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the New York World Wine And Spirits Competition, both of which are very well-known by SH who was awarded gold medals in this competitions. The SWSC’s methodology is the same as the San Francisco competition, but it also focuses on Asian spirits producers, bottlers, and products that are available to Asian consumers.
The competition has gained popularity among consumers in the Asia-Pacific region, despite accepting entries from all over the world, including Scotch single malt, American Bourbon, Chinese baijiu, and Korean soju. In 2023, the competition received an entry for rakija, a type of fruit brandy commonly made in Croatia and other Balkan countries.
San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2023
Tomatin 36-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky has been awarded the 'Best in Show' title in the whisky category at the 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC). The whisky is part of the distillery's Prestige Collection, which positions it among the finest whiskies in the world, and its master distiller is Graham Munson.
New York World Wine And Spirits Competition 2023
In 2023, the New York World Wine and Spirits Competition voted the single malt from Islay Ardbeg 25 Years Old as the best scotch. This award is part of the Tasting Alliance group of wine and spirit competitions, which includes the San Francisco World Spirits and the Singapore World Spirits Competitions.
How do SH’s fans decide what whisky to buy when faced with a plethora of options, especially if they don't drink or know very little about spirits? Some may choose to stick with the only brand they know and have been buying but not drinking for the last three years, while others may opt for the most aesthetically pleasing bottle, hoping to impress the person they will give it to. 🤷♀️

The Singapore World Spirits Competition has only been in existence since 2019. But in that short sum of time, it has grown into one of the most important annual judgings in all of Asia. A big reason why it attained so much stature so rapidly is because it’s run by the Tasting Alliance. These are the same folks responsible for the San Francisco World Spirits Competition—which is regarded by many in the industry as the gold standard of booze contests.
This year saw thousands of entries roll in across all major categories of adult beverage. Several weeks ago we were here talking about the best bourbon winner. It was an eyebrow-raiser, to say the least; a brand that didn’t enjoy widespread recognition, even amongst ardent aficionados of American whiskey. That all changed after the announcement of the accolade, underscoring just how valuable these contests can be for brands.
Today we’re taking a look at the top-ranked scotch from the Singapore Worlds Spirits Competition. And it’s bound to generate its own fair share of rancor. The honor belongs to The Sassenach Blended Scotch Whisky.
Why is this a controversial pick? Well, most notably it’s a blend. That means it includes a combination of malt and grain whiskies plucked from across the Scottish landscape. The conventional wisdom of the day holds that blended scotches are somehow inferior to their single malt counterparts.
If you don’t know the difference between the two categories, don’t kick yourself. It’s relativelystraightforward: single malt is whisky distilled from malted barley—and only malted barley—in a pot still at a single distillery. Blends, by contrast, can combine any number of single malts, often times collected from dozens of distilleries, and then married against a lion’s share of grain whisky.
And there lies the rub, in that last bit. Grain whiskies can come from a number of different ingredients—chiefly corn (but sometimes wheat and rye and other cereals). They are distilled in large column stills, which results in a markedly lighter flavor profile. Some deride this liquid as merely scotch-flavored vodka. Being that this component often makes up the majority of the booze in any blend, it’s a short jump to blended scotch being lesser then.
But here’s a not-so-little secret: blends can be beautiful. They are often times more accessible and “easy-drinking.” Hence why they are far and away the most popular style of scotch on the planet. And when rendered properly, they can serve up a kaleidoscopic array of tastes which is difficult to achieve when you’re only working with malt sourced from a single distillery.
And that brings us back to The Sassenach. This marmalade-hued hooch is undeniably complex. It holds a bouquet reminiscent of the sweet shop: marzipan, candied orange peel and ginger. Upon the palate is a smattering of heather, ripened stone fruit, and dried apricot. It fades after the sip in a subdued sweetness—butterscotch and nutmeg are both apparent. Overall, the 92-proof scotch leaves you with little resistance but plenty to contemplate.
For anyone who remains dismissive of the blended style, this bottle stands as a testament to the follies of your preconceived notions. Although it does so at a relatively hefty price: it typically retails at around $125 per 750ml.
The Sassenach is also a celebrity spirit. It was launched by Scottish actor Sam Heughan, back in 2020. That revelation will inevitably be met with a degree of blowback from a certain subset of drinks enthusiasts. But it’s not really a discussion worth engaging in, because either a whisky is good or it isn’t. And the Singapore World Spirits Competition makes it plainly clear in which camp this one belongs. And that brings us back to The Sassenach. This marmalade-hued hooch is undeniably complex. New Year Gift Ideas
Johnnie Walker Blue Label Blended Scotch Whisky
Johnnie Walker Blue Label is one of the rarest blended whiskies available in the world. A honey-colored whisky with a spicy, smoky fragrance.
The first sip is surprisingly sweet and honeyed, then the smoke gently creeps in like fog at dawn, softly surrounding the edges of the tongue giving way to a luxuriously long, warming, smoky finish. Best served neat, along with an ice-cold water to enhance its powerful character.
Jameson 18 Year Irish Whiskey
Jameson 18 Years was made to make any occasion memorable. This is an 18-year-old whiskey, the kind of thing you only pull out for best mates. And if you want to impress them just throw this line into conversation: “It’s a unique blend of three signature distillates matured in the finest oak for almost two decades and is given a final marrying period of at least 6 months in a fresh American oak barrel, adding a unique complexity and elegance’. Ok, that is a mouthful. Just let the bottle do the talking.
Its long lingering finish carries the theme of the wood, spice and toffee right through to the end.
Macallan 12 Year Scotch Whisky
Macallan 12 Year is a classic sherry-cask-matured Speyside that makes a very good gateway into the single malt category. Flavors of fruitcake, warmed bread, soaked raisins, and clove lead to a warm, medium to long finish noted with pear, cigar and peppery clove notes.
Deliciously smooth, with rich dried fruits and sherry, balanced with woodsmoke and spice. Described by F Paul Pacult, the renowned international whisky writer, in his book Kindred Spirits as 'simply the best 12-Year-Old single malt around'.
Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon
Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon, the world’s first single barrel bourbon whiskey produced at the Buffalo Trace Distillery at Frankfort, Kentucky, and launched in 1984 by master distiller Elmer T. Lee. The presentation, taste and finish are all excellent. A staple bourbon for any collector or home bar enjoyer.
A deep, satisfying nose of nutmeg and spices. Powerful dry vanilla notes in harmony with hints of honey amid strong caramel and corn. A medium finish composed of returning corn and nutmeg flavors. Best served neat or on the rocks. Bottled at 46.5% ABV/VOL (90 Proof).
Sheridan's Coffee Layered Liqueur
Sheridan's Coffee Layered Liqueur is consisting of two bottles that resemble a terrific Irish coffee when layered in the correct proportions. One section is filled with a black liqueur, consisting of coffee and whiskey flavors, while the other is filled with a white liqueur of milk white chocolate. The ausschank blend in these ingredients with one unique pouring spout in the bag.
A beautiful blend of dark coffee chocolate liqueur with a silky-smooth vanilla cream liquor. Tilt the glass to allow the dark chocolate liquor to layer below the cream and it will resemble the best Irish coffee you’ve ever had. It contains 15.5 per cent alcohol by volume. A must try!
Patron Xo Cafe
Patron XO Cafe is a dry and low-proof coffee liqueur. It’s a combination of Patron silver and the essence fine coffee. This liqueur is a blend of vanilla, chocolate, and coffee aromas. It also has a light tequila taste and chocolate notes. It is recommended to Store it in the freezer. Avoid repeated re-freezing
It is excellent for sipping after dinner, as a premium cocktail ingredient, or as a unique and delicious dessert topping. It is delightful in Martinis or on vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!
Johnnie Walker Red Label Blended Scotch Whisky
Johnnie Walker Red Label is crackling with spice and bursting with vibrant, smoky flavors. It’s a blend that combines light whiskies from Scotland’s East Coast and more peaty whiskies from the West, creating an extraordinary depth of flavor. Johnnie Walker Red Label tumbles onto your palate with the freshness of spray from a breaking wave, bringing the unmistakable zing of aromatic spices - cinnamon and pepper - fizzing over the center of your tongue. There’s a suggestion of fruity sweetness, like fresh apple or pear and a mellow bed of vanilla, before the Johnnie Walker signature of a long, lingering, smoky finish.
Enjoy Johnnie Walker Red Label in any way you like - on its own, over ice, or long with your favorite mixer. We recommend Johnnie Ginger.
Hendrick’s Gin
Hendrick’s Gin is created via an absurdly inefficient, yet quite glorious process. In essence, to make one gin, we first create two. One on an old-fashioned pot still, yielding a rich and intricate spirit. The other on a long-necked Carter Head, producing a delicate, more refined spirit. Each still is infused with an unusual symphony of 11 botanicals. The gins from the two stills are then married together and graced with refreshing infusions of Rose and Cucumber.
This odd method of making gin enables Hendrick’s to taste light, yet intriguingly complex. The result is a wondrously refreshing gin with a delightfully floral aroma, elevating any cocktail and all occasions.
Escape the conventional, and embrace the delectable. Please enjoy the unusual responsibly.

Top Ten Premium Whiskies Perfect for Christmas
Maybe we're biased, but whiskey is one of the most meaningful gifts in our opinion. Because the options appear to be unlimited, you must know what the person likes in order to select the perfect present, which means you may personalise a bottle to the individual.
Alternatively, you can introduce a spirit fan to something completely new and thereby open another door of enjoyment. Harbor View Wine and Liquors is one of the best Wine and Liquors Shop in Syracuse.
You can now acquire fantastic whiskies for less money. However, for those looking to splurge, either for themselves or as a gift, we have compiled a list of the top 10 to inspire you.
Here are our picks for the top ten premium whiskies.
Johnnie Walker Blue Label Gift Set Includes 2 Glasses
Blue Label is a legend in and of itself. This rich and somewhat smoky whiskey is made up of some very ancient malt and grain Scotch whiskies and it's said that just one in ten thousand casks makes the cut. This lovely gift set not only includes the ever-awesome Blue Label, but it also includes a pair of very spiffy branded tumblers to enjoy said whiskey from! Should make an excellent present.
Forgotten Gems Caperdonich 23-Year-Old Whiskey 70cl
Have you ever tried a Caperdonich single malt? The distillery is now closed, and the majority of the distillery's whiskey went into blends, however in this case, absence helped the heart grow stronger, and people only recognised what we missed after it was gone. Fortunately, the Forgotten Gems obtained 30 bottles in order to release this beauty.
70cl Yamazaki 12-Year-Old Whiskey
Yamazaki 12 Year Old, the flagship single malt whiskey from Japan's first and oldest malt distillery, was the first Japanese whiskey to be awarded a gold medal at the International Spirits Challenge in 2003, and many more followed suit.
70cl Midleton Very Rare 2023 Whiskey
Midleton's annual Very Rare series began in 1984 and has been an annual highlight in the world of Irish whiskey ever since. Master distiller Kevin O'Gorman selected a variety of pot still and single-grain Irish whiskies to mature in lightly charred bourbon casks for the 2023 release. It has a fruit mélange, deep pot still spice, and a thick creamy mouthfeel.
70cl Dalmore King Alexander III Whiskey
Dalmore King Alexander III is a stunning Highland single malt Scotch whiskey that looks as wonderful as it tastes. It's a blend of numerous good whiskies aged in casks of wine, Madeira, sherry, Marsala, Kentucky bourbon, and Port. King-sized whiskey.
Fiona Macleod 33 Year Old - The Islay Whiskey Company's Character 70cl
Islay whiskey matured for over 30 years and is in short supply, so take advantage when a bottler like The Character of Islay Whiskey Company gets their hands on any. Fiona Macleod has been aged for an astounding 33 years and has a taste profile that includes ripe oak, rich smoke, and flashes of bright tropical fruit.
70cl WhistlePig 15-Year-Old Whiskey
In rye terms, this is an old, old whiskey from the always dependable WhistlePig. The 15-Year-Old expression is a pure rye whiskey that was finished in Vermont oak barrels with a long toast and strong char. Because of the shorter growth seasons and harsh winters, Vermont oak has a tight grain pattern that can alter the flavour profile of the whiskey, implying that there's some tree terroir at work here!
70cl Glen Scotia 21-Year-Old Whiskey
Glen Scotia is a single malt Scotch whiskey aged in a blend of refilled bourbon barrels and refilled American oak hogsheads before a six-month finish in first-fill oloroso sherry casks from Campbeltown distillery Glen Scotia. It is non-chill filtered and bottled at 46% ABV with natural colour. It's pure Glen Scotia, and it's all the better for it.
Bunnahabhain 17 Year Old (2004 cask) Warehouse Nine Whiskey 70cl Hand-Filled
This 17-year-old single malt Scotch whiskey from the Islay distillery was hand-filled from Pedro Ximénez sherry cask from its legendary warehouse nine! It was bottled at 54.1% ABV and is truly one-of-a-kind whiskey.
Whiskey Royal Salute 21-Year-Old Signature Blend 70cl
The 21-year-old Royal Salute Signature Blend, one of the best blends ever manufactured, was first prepared to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II's coronation. It has been matured for at least 21 years in honour of the 21 Gun Salute fired at the Tower of London during Royal celebrations, and it comes in a classic blue Wade porcelain decanter.

The World’s Best Single Malt Scotch—According To The 2023 International Whisky Competition
The 14th edition of the International Whisky Competition took place earlier this year in Bardstown, Kentucky. Out of thousands of entries, the field was whittled down to three medalists per category, just like the Olympics: gold, silver, and bronze for each. Atop that, the contest doles out an annual top prize to its “Whisky of the Year.” Those results were just announced, so it’s time we take a…
