HALESTORM's LZZY HALE And JOE HOTTINGER Announce 'The Living Room Sessions' 2025 Tour

Lzzy Hale and Joe Hottinger of Grammy-winning hard rock band HALESTORM have announced an intimate tour featuring the two of them performing acoustic, stripped down versions of HALESTORM favorites and the music that has inspired the band. Dubbed "Halestorm's Lzzy And Joe: The Living Room Sessions", the tour consists of 12 dates in January 2025. A full list of dates is below.

In a September 2024 interview with PK of Louisville, Kentucky's ALT 105.1 radio station, Lzzy spoke about the progress of the recording sessions for HALESTORM's follow-up to 2022's "Back From The Dead" album. Lzzy said: "We've had three separate sessions in the studio with — we're making a record with [producer] Dave Cobb. And he's actually a huge closet metal fan, and so he's really excited. And so we're making this great music, but we're constantly touring. So we've had, like, three different sessions in the studio. We're probably — what? — 70, 80, maybe, percent there. We have a studio in our house and so I'm doing a lot of the finishing touches on vocals and sewing everything up, doing solos and all that. And then we get back in in December to just say, 'Okay, this is good.' And then, yeah. And then there we are. So we're excited about it. We really are."

Cobb has shared in nine Grammy wins, including four for "Best Americana Album" and three for "Best Country Album". He's also been named "Producer Of The Year" by the Country Music Awards, the Americana Music Association (twice) and the Music Row Awards, and has been a Grammy nominee in the category.

HALESTORM and I PREVAIL recently embarked on summer 2024 co-headlining tour. Produced by Live Nation, the trek kicked off on July 9 in Raleigh and ran through August 17 in Las Vegas. HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD and FIT FOR A KING served as support. April 8th - April 15th 2023

I know it’s going to be a well over a week’s worth of multi-day post, but my wife’s father passed away. I’ll try to chronicle the week and maybe reflect on it on the end.

April 8th:

My wife comes back home from work. As she is about to head to bed she gets a call from her sister that her dad is on his last breaths. We quickly find her a flight to get on and she packs last minute. We spend some time together and plan out when I should head out. I take her to the airport and she leaves. I forgot that there was a birthday lunch. I go to that and hangout. I come back and take the dog to the beach. I call a friend and chat with him a bit. I text another to see how he is. Also my crown popped off. I had to go to a buddy’s house to see if someone could help me put it back in. I spend some time with them and watch UFC. After I head home and head to bed.

April 9th:

Forgot that it was Easter Sunday. I wake up to the text that my wife's father passed away. I am running around doing bunch of errands and cleaning the house as best I can. I was thinking about going to a social event, but I head to my friend’s place to drop off a blue apron mean and to hang out. It was good to talk to someone about some of the events that transpired over the past couple months. 

April 10th:

I finish packing. Fortunately the dentist was able to squeeze me in the morning to get my temporary crown put back in. I walk the dog, finish some more errands, and take the dog to the boarding place. I head to the airport and head to Springfield. I got into town around 9 PM and my brother in law picked me up. I met some of the family at my wife’s mom’s house and we hung out. We went to bed a bit early.

April 11th:

I decided to go for a long run. I ran for about 7 miles. I took a shower and I’m trying to remember what I did. Well for lunch all the family came over to my mother in law’s place for lunch to hang out and eat. I saw all my nieces and nephews and we hung out there. For dinner we went to a Mexican restaurant and ordered 3 towers of margaritas. I guess it’s only fitting that we celebrate the life of their father. When the family members that were staying over at my mother in law’s place came back we all drank whiskey and played cards until pretty late. It was a good evening. 

April 12th:

Today was the funeral. In the morning we all got ready and had breakfast. We took pictures. The funeral was around 1 PM. There was a short service and then some light snacks at my mother in law’s place after. People hung out for a while. For dinner one of my brother in laws and I went into town and bought bunch of liquor for drinks and groceries for dinner. We grilled venison and pork and made daiquiris and bunch of other stuff. There were some people who stayed over longer and we kept making drinks and chatting. I’m not going to lie I got really really drunk. 

April 13th:

Woke up hung over but not the usual kind. Said good bye to family that were leaving. A few of the brother in laws took me out to the lake to go fishing. We were out there for about 5 hours. I caught 3 fish. After we got ready for dinner. What we caught was what we ate. We gutted the fish and cleaned them. One of my brother in law deep fried them. We had a pretty big dinner. We came back to my mother in law’s place and had a quiet conversation and went to bed.

April 14th:

The ladies wanted to go get brunch so one of my brother in law took time off to show me around town. We just hung out most of the day. We saw some trailers he needed to see and we went to go shoot some guns and got pizza afterwards. For dinner we went to another brother in law’s house and had Chinese food and hung out. We all decided to go to a quarter arcade nearby and took 10 kids and 8 adults. We all had fun playing really cheesy arcade games and what not. The wife and I said our goodbyes to the remaining family and headed to my mother in law’s place.

April 15th:

Woke up and slowly packed. The wife and I helped my mother in law clean up some of the furniture after all the visitors. We had an early lunch and she took us to the airport. Came back to San Diego around 5:30 pm. Came home and picked up our dog. We picked up some groceries and made dinner at home. The wife went to bed early because she was tired and I stayed up a little bit late to catch up on this.

Reflections:

When I got the news that my father in law passed away, I texted a few close friends, “This thing called life is short. Hug your kids and call your parents.” Don’t know if they actually did that or not, but it was more of a coping mechanism for me. The other thing to as I saw my 4 brother in laws carrying the casket of their father, it just reminded me the mistake I made in waiting a bit longer to have kids. We should’ve tried earlier. My ignorance, hubris, and whatever else failed me. I don’t know if I’ll ever have kids of my own. This recent episode really showed me the importance of children. Children are suffering, long lasting, joyous, sorrowful. It brings out the best and worst of us, but I think it is what we are evolved to do. Somehow in today’s culture children are seen as just burdens. They are burdens and they are much more than that. Jordan Peterson says that early on you get to choose your suffering, but if you wait too long time will eventually choose it for you. I don’t know what lies ahead for me and my wife. It’s not like we haven’t tried. We tried to choose the suffering, but maybe we haven't tried enough. I don’t think the window has closed quite yet, but I know it’s closing pretty rapidly. There are some hard decisions we have to make either way. May God be with us if he is out there. God if you are real, I’ll make the sacrifice like you required Abraham. Maybe there are more things I need to sacrifice.

I grew up in Springfield, Missouri and one of the things I liked the most is plentiful of restaurants. Good restaurants are available at most, and more than most of the Midwestern towns. Next, is that people do not know the word lazy. There is no excuse to be a couch potato in Springfield because your calendar will be filled with events throughout the whole year. Some of these athletic games I enjoy are Monster Dash, Tour de Ozarks bicycle race, Bass Pro Shops Conservation Marathon, Balloon Release, and many more. At most, your wallet will be glad that you move here. In this city, you can save a lot because of the low cost of living.

Diaper Bank of the Ozarks looks to expand to Joplin, Mo. area

The diaper Bank of the Ozarks is working to reach more families outside of Springfield. The diaper Bank of the Ozarks already serves not only Springfield families, but also families in 58 counties. The diaper bank is also adding Joplin, Mo. The diaper bank estimates they would need an additional 60,000 to 100,000 diapers a year on top of the approximately 1 million diapers it expects to hand out in 2019. The new effort started when the pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Joplin contacted the diaper bank for help with a new program. Based on estimates, around 60, 000 to about 100, 000 diapers are necessary addition on top of the approximately one million diapers it expects to be handed out in 2019. It is good news that the pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church in Joplin had contacted the diaper bank to seek help for the new program. When I came to Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park located in Springfield, Missouri last month, I notice that this place is well-maintained and very peaceful. I like the beautiful trees and flowers. I enjoy looking at the orchid. It’s fascinating to see and to look at. I can tell that the ground is somewhat wide, but there are walking pathways all around and going to the lake. I have been here several times, but every time I visit the place, I always see an improvement, and I see something different. This place never fails to make me feel better; that’s why I love it here.

3 Branson Scenic Railroad

Adjacent to the Downtown Historic District on the city's east side, the Branson Scenic Railway takes customers through the foothills of the Ozark and down the historic trails of the transportation age. Traveling either north or south of the Historic Depot , the Branson Scenic Railway navigates a lush landscape with tunnels, trestles, and the true Ozark Desert . Restored passenger cars are part of the history of the Branson Scenic Railway, and all ticket buyers are encouraged to browse the connected collection of classic carriages during the nearly two-hour tour. The Branson Scenic Railway offers special events throughout the year in addition to its regular rides, including a Travel by Polar Express train for the holidays and a dinner train offered on Saturdays from April to October.

5 Cavern of the Talking Rocks

A Closer Look at Bentonville’s Red Barn

Red Barn in Bentonville is reinventing the way people think about community, culture, and the built environment. This new type of neighborhood – called an agrihood – was developed by Green Circle Projects to bring Ozarks Living to everyone in the Bentonville community. This gorgeous property has a working farm, a treehouse, greenhouses, a farm stand and so much more. We recently had the chance to ask Matt O’Reilly, Development Director at Green Circle Projects, more about Red Barn. He shared the project’s vision and beautiful images of the property with us. As always, Bentonville is reinventing the wheel for community-based projects!

TSG: So what exactly is an Agrihood?

RB: It’s a neighborhood-farm sandwich. They come in many shapes and sizes.  As far as we know Red Barn is the first that's fully "for lease." The purpose of Red Barn is to provide "Ozarks Living" to those relocating or living in the area that may not otherwise be able to find or purchase suitable housing. We have a mix of townhomes and flats, with a total of 11 different floor plans. There’s something for everybody here.

TSG: What sparked the idea for Red Barn?

RB: Green Circle has existed at the intersection of sustainability and real estate development since it began. As the chairman of Springfield, MO's Natural Environment Strategic Planning task force, I was surprised to find a majority of our "objectives" to be centered on the local food economy. Since that time we've been developing properties that do more than just "green building", furthering the crucial relationship between the built environment and the localized food economy.

TSG: Where did the name of your company and the community come from?

RB: It has several meanings. If you combine all the words in different combinations each combination explains something about the company, Green Circle Projects. Also, our logo is a green circle, which came from the shape on top of the sign of our first project. I like calling things based on something that is physically identifiable at the site..."Red Barn" (at the Red Barn), "Quarry Town"(at a Quarry), "Green Circle Shopping Center" (the shopping center with the green circle out front) and “Farmers Park” (the place where the farmers market is).  

TSG: Why did you decide to locate this in Bentonville?

RB: We wanted to move here so we started looking for project opportunities in the community in hopes of having enough of a reason to open an office here.   This is the project that emerged once we identified the site. Like the main character in the book "The Fountainhead", I believe there's one project that best suits each site. The challenge is to find that one project amongst all the various constraints.

TSG: What is your favorite thing about the lifestyle provided at Red Barn?

RB: I love all the trails it's surrounded by . . . and the trees. The project won Bentonville's "Grow With Trees" award in 2019, the first time it's been awarded to a commercial housing project.

TSG: What is a little known fact about Red Barn?

RB: We have a few little known facts, actually! The original Red Barn was in the Barns of Benton County book. It has a treehouse and campsites in the woods at the center of 5 trails, which is why we refer to it as the “Ultimate Trailhead”. Also, the buildings all have solar power, we have about 200 chickens and two Great Pyrenees patrol dogs named Ruby and Raven. The large "greenhouses" on the property are a very progressive tool for intensive crop production and they are actually called rolling high tunnels. They change position based on the season.

TSG: Can you tell us some of the other experiences besides living places available to the community at Red Barn?

RB: The farm is a working farm and produces food for area restaurants. Residents can learn farming skills in exchange for lending their time. Residents and neighbors can also buy eggs and produce in the Grange (the community room).  

Although the community is now fully developed, there are still plenty of ways to support Red Barn. The farm stand in the Grange is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and sells fresh eggs and a variety of greens and veggies. Weekly deliveries are also available within a 2-mile radius for a nominal fee. Click here for more information and to sign up.

A Global Shortage of Magnetic Tape Leaves Cassette Fans Reeling

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.-- Steve Stepp and his team of septuagenarian engineers are using a bag of rust, a kitchen mixer larger than a man and a 62-foot-long contraption that used to make magnetic strips for credit cards to avert a disaster that no one saw coming in the digital-music era.

The world is running out of cassette tape.

National Audio Co., where Mr. Stepp is president and co-owner, has been hoarding a stockpile of music-quality, wide magnetic tape from suppliers that shut down in the past 15 years after music lovers ditched cassettes. National Audio held on. Now, many musicians are clamoring for cassettes as a way to physically distribute their music.

The company says it has less than a year’s supply of tape left. So it is building the first manufacturing line for high-grade ferric oxide cassette tape in the U.S. in decades. If all goes well, the machine will churn out nearly 4 miles of tape a minute by January. And not just any tape. “The best tape ever made,” boasts Mr. Stepp, 69 years old. “People will hear a whole new product.”

“Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda insisted that “The Hamilton Mixtape,” a 23-track album based on the hit Broadway musical and released last year, be available in cassette format. Brooklyn post-punk trio Big Bliss’s cassette debut last year earned music-blog reviews and gas money on the band’s first tour, even though the musicians didn’t have a cassette player when the tape was released.

Metallica is a repeat customer of National Audio, and the company’s 45 employees have produced cassette soundtracks for installments of the movies “Star Wars” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” and a surprise release by the platinum pop act Twenty One Pilots. It left the factory in unmarked boxes.

Most customers are up-and-coming bands, hobbyists or eccentrics who order 50 to 500 copies at a time, including a man who claimed to have recorded the sound of grass growing, according to Mr. Stepp.

Mr. Stepp’s father sold reels of background music to restaurants and factories. The family started National Audio in 1969, buying an early type of tape and loading it into cartridges for radio stations. The company began selling cassettes a few years later.

When tapes took over the music business, outselling vinyl records by the early 1980s, National Audio stuck to the spoken word. The company produced continuing-education lessons for lawyers, magazines read aloud for the blind and blank cassettes.

For years, Joyce Meyer Ministries, an evangelical Christian group based in Fenton, Mo., ordered 250,000 blank tapes a week on which it dubbed sermons and self-help advice. Listeners of “How to Hear From God” and “Eat & Stay Thin” kept Mr. Stepp prowling for supplies long after most music fans switched to compact discs. When competitors scrapped their cassette equipment, National Audio would send a truck and offer pennies on the dollar.

“They were laughing as we drove away because they were putting in CD-replicating lines,” he says.

The joke was on them. Cassettes are cool again, particularly with listeners raised on earbuds, MP3s and streaming music. Sales are small but rising, according to Nielsen Music data.

The founders of Burger Records, an independent label run from a Southern California strip mall, grew fond of the cassette format a decade ago when their band, Thee Makeout Party, was touring in a van equipped with a cassette deck. The band had copied records to cassettes so they would have tunes to play on the road. They decided to sell their own music on cassette.

Burger has sold some 500,000 copies of about 1,000 different releases on cassette, ranging from new bands to reissued albums by Green Day and Weezer. Other labels chuckled at first. “When they realized they could make a buck or two on these things, they started doing it themselves,” says Burger co-founder Sean Bohrman.

Nostalgia and analog chic aside, cassettes solve two dilemmas: the high cost of making vinyl records and getting fans to buy digital downloads, particularly when bands are touring. A hundred cassettes packaged with download coupons can be made in a few weeks for a few hundred dollars, compared with months and thousands of dollars for vinyl. They often sell at retail for as little as $5 each.

“Plus, tapes fit in your breast pocket, which is pretty great,” says Mr. Miranda, the “Hamilton” composer.

National Audio got small orders from Burger and other record labels. Then Pearl Jam called. The Seattle rock band needed 15,000 copies for a 2011 box set. Smashing Pumpkins followed. Metallica wanted 20,000 replicas of its original demo tape.

Mr. Stepp’s company has had to rely on repurposed equipment, including an 80-year-old machine built to seal cigarette packs with cellophane. It was modified to wrap cassettes. National Audio has a Noah’s ark of spare parts to keep what Mr. Stepp calls its “orphaned” gear running.

“It’s the finest equipment the 1960s has to offer,” he says amid rows of whirring duplicators.

Tape-making is complicated. The process includes a finely calibrated slurry of metallic particles and polyurethane, miles of Mylar, 48 feet of ovens, a small amount of radioactivity and a very precise slicer. Employees broke an elevator while hauling in a 4,600-pound component that squeezes tape to a shine.

Mr. Stepp, who owns National Audio with his wife and adult children, hopes to ship the first cassettes made with the new tape by January. After that, he plans to start selling bulk tape to other cassette makers.

He is working the phones to promote the new product and take orders. Mr. Stepp says he treats every customer alike, whether they order 50 cassettes or 15,000, recalling that the company’s first order from Joyce Meyer Ministries brought in just $35.

“You never know who you’re dealing with or who that person will become,” he says.
