Frigid Bitch 2019 Results
Frigid Bitch - back for year 6!
Tumblr media
Continuing tradition as probably the biggest ladies/non-binary bike race in the universe with over 100 riders, this year’s Frigid Bitch expanded with first-time-ever-offered pre-registration and MORE PODIUMS. Held at Threadbare Cider in Spring Garden, at 10am on Saturday, February 16th, 2019, racers started flooding in to stock up on gear, check out the competition, and pick up their maps & manifests.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As always, there is a one hour window for racers to frantically plan their routes, forge alliances, and make friends. A few local ladies’ racing teams showed up in force, and some veteran Frigid Bitch ride-or-die gangs side-eyed up their matching kits and focused efficiency with determined fuck-it, let’s-do-this attitudes. New racers met riding partners on-site, and a handful of volunteers showed up to take in the crowd before heading out to their no-longer-secret positions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A quarter to go-time, everyone was hustled outside to unlock their steeds and gear up for the start line.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
THE CHECKPOINTS
Grandview Overlook Every year, for the out-of-towners, suburb queens, commuters who never stray from the beaten track - there’s always one checkpoint that everybody knows how to get to. Not that we’d make it easy! Pittsburgh’s famous overlook is a slag up Mt Washington, and with the main thru way closed, racers had to either bump it up via shattered sidewalks, or find away around. Volunteers were ready with a toast at the top!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fineview Overlook In a city of hills and bridges you’re gonna have a lot of overlooks … Grandview’s much lesser known cousin on the Northside had racers figuring out how to find their way above the ballfield. Anyone who actually followed the map to this checkpoint found themselves climbing one of the toughest Dirty Dozen Hills….oh, did we do that? Whoops!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Herr’s Island Keep following the map in the other direction, and it’d take you down Rialto St (another Dirty Dozen Hill! Who drew this?!) and across the 30th St Bridge to Herr’s Island, haven of local crew teams and isolated Pgh elite. Everyone knows it’s there; most cyclists have zero reason to ever trek over. On the far end of the island, through some woods & down some steps to a gravel lot in a crumbling wall, volunteers were waiting with a camp fire to check off numbers of the racers who hiked-a-bike or threw down and hustled on foot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
5 Points Speaking of hike-a-biking, the furthest checkpoint from the start was tucked away in Pgh’s mountain biking mecca, Frick Park. There’s only one spot in the woods where 5 trails spike together in a star formations, colloquially known as…. FIVE POINTS!!! Entering the trail from Beechwood Blvd in Squirrel Hill, anyone who made it this far had to off-road their ride down dirt paths and over exposed roots. But hey, there was hot chocolate at the bottom!
Tumblr media
Murray Hill Not far from 5 points, Murray Hill Ave gave everyone the opportunity to experience off- roading on a one of the most quintessential Pgh urban this-is-actually-still-a-road terrains (second only to massive potholes): brutally steep cobbles!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Iron Eden Metal Works Oh, but there were potholes. Snaking the back way up & down bombed-out Sassafras St, nestled in the shadows of the Bloomfield Bridge, lies a two-tiered & strange-looking structure. ~By night!~ a times-past underground venue in the woods, ~by day!~ a rustbelt relic: Iron Eden!
Tumblr media
Bonus checkpoint feature:  ~ * g l a m o u r   s h o t s * ~
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Hot Metal Bridge It’s a classic. Need we say more?
The Boob Mausoleum Probably the most infamous tomb in the Allegheny Cemetery, the WHITE mausoleum features a bafflingly intense commitment to full-blown Egyptian theme&decor. Stationed just outside the crypt’s brass-cast pillar-flanked doors, 2 ~prominent~ sphinxes stand guard over the venerable (?) White family portal. Stationed just outside the sphinxes….Frigid Bitch BEACH PARTY!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mohawk St Finally, last in line but top of the list as far as checkpoint shenanigans go; bomb down Fifth Ave from Pitt campus and right before you hit the Birmingham Bridge, there’s a set of city steps that ascend into the woods of West Oakland. They spit out at Landslide Community Farms and a pink jersey barrier where volunteers waited with a camp fire* and a case of PBR. They’d set up a beer chute along the top of the stairs and stood in suspense while racers ran up the steps, not taking the bait. Finally, the vet bitch gang of Alex K, Katherine J and Frankie M threw their bikes over their shoulders, rushed the chute, grabbed a beer, cracked it with their teeth and chugged on the way up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
*if you missed the campfire, it’s because the fire dept showed up to put it out. See? Shenanigans!
Tumblr media
Once the clock struck 2, everyone had 1 hour to race back to Threadbare. Bikes were slammed into the temp parking, road shoes clacked across the parking lot, the doors were thrown over and spoke card numbers hollered at the waiting table-side officials.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
P A R T Y   T I M E
Pizza was eaten, cider was drunk, war stories were exchanged! Multi-year Bitch Queen Elise R regaled audiences with a story that started as a complaint that she couldn’t run any red lights on the North Side because there were too many cops around, then perked up with details about bombing down towards an intersection from Mohawk, where a white SUV veered into the corner of the intersection, blocking traffic for Elise & her crew to blast their way through, waved them past and yelled “YEAH FRIGID BITCH!!!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

The Best Part
The Frigid Bitch has always been a race to promote empowerment in the cycling community, to show that underrepresented groups of people can kick just as much ass as the status quo, and to support organizations that in turn provide for  others in need. To that end, funds raised via registration fees and anonymous pledges have always been given to the Greater Pittsburgh Women’s Center & Shelter. Over the past year, another organization has provided immeasurable support for the founders of the Frigid Bitch in their hour of need. This year’s race raised $730 for the Women’s Shelter and $400 for the Women’s Law Project. It couldn’t be done without the support of our racers & our community.
Tumblr media
THANK YOU for another great year! To all of our sponsors, who are solely responsible for the joy fest you just witnessed above! To all my lovely volunteers, without whom this race would never get off the ground, and who pull out all the stops to make this the funnest goddamn alleycat in the whole universe. Thank you to my photographers, without you no one would ever know how fucking awesome this event is! Thank you to my little brother, who always finds the time to churn out another amazing race flyer! THANK YOU TO MY TEAM OF LADIES who helped me throw this race! Without you, Frigid Bitch #5 would have been the last of its kind! Thank you Di-ay, Elise #1 & Elise #2, Kat, Mattie, & Kaylin! Thank you Pittsburgh for being the only city I’d ever wish to be from! I’LL BE BACK!

Weekend Road Trip: Pittsburgh, PA
Tumblr media
Looking to do an easy road trip and catch a game, we decided to drive up to Pittsburgh with our best friend for the Labor Day weekend. I was pleasantly surprised by the options for attractions to visit, so we had no problem finding activities for after the baseball game. If you are looking to take a trip to Pittsburgh yourself, here are my recommendations based on what we experienced…
Accommodations:
Honestly, we didn’t even look at accommodations beyond Airbnb, because it is our go to for cheap and pleasant lodging. The Airbnb we chose was in the Perry North area, which is slightly north of downtown Pittsburgh. It was the perfect location, since it was in a quiet suburban neighborhood with easy parking, but was still minutes away from downtown. The Airbnb itself was ADORABLE and well thought out, with its coffee/tea bar, wifi info framed throughout the house, and complimentary toiletries. Jennifer is a great host, so I highly recommend staying with her if you are in Pittsburgh.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Attractions:
We started our weekend with a visit to Randyland, a kaleidoscope of color, found objects and architectural elements assembled together into a quirky outdoor space. Your eye is drawn every which way, and the artist itself in a very enthusiastic tour guide if need be. Photo-ops abound at Randyland!
Tumblr media
We then ventured over to the PNC Park to catch the Cincinnati Reds vs Pittsburgh Pirates game. Though it was rainy and chilly when we went, it is an enjoyable baseball park with stunning views of downtown and the river. The baseball and football stadiums are situated closely together, so it’s an entertaining area for sports fans, with lots of close options for food/drinks if need be. Be prepared to pay a pretty penny for parking, street parking is non-existent in this area.
Tumblr media
On our second day in Pittsburgh, we drove over to University of Pittsburgh/Cathedral of Learning area, found easy (and FREE) parking, and enjoyed a pleasant walk through the campus area towards the museums. Take a peek inside the Heinz Memorial Chapel if you walk through the campus lawns. This beautiful gothic church has stunning stain glass and architectural details, and at the time we were visiting had an instrumental concert playing. (St Paul Cathedral is another place to visit for stunning gothic architecture)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though there are a plethora of museums to choose from in Pittsburgh, we chose to visit the Carnegie Art & History Museum. Unfortunately, it’s not cheap to visit each museum, so we wanted the most bang for our buck. With our student IDs, we got admission to the museum for $10 ($20 for adults) and were able to enjoy two museums for the price of one! The exhibits we enjoyed the most were the ancient architecture, dinosaurs, and modern art.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the museum, we drove up the hill to the Mt Washington neighborhood, which has observation decks with gorgeous views of the city. You can also take a ride on the historic Duquesne Incline, which are cute trolleys that slowly scale the hill ($5-7 for a round trip ticket). We popped into the local ice cream shop for twisted cones to enjoy before our trek to the bottom on the incline. The line wasn’t bad waiting for the trolley at the top, but once off, we saw the long line waiting for us from the bottom (so be prepared to wait in line for this adventure). Before getting back in line to return to the top, we explored the shops and restaurants at the Station Square.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
 Restaurants/Bars:
We enjoyed some local beers at the baseball game, I recommend trying I.C. Iced Mango, but didn’t venture to any other bars besides the Tiki Lounge. Being a retro enthusiast, one challenge on my bucket list is visiting tiki bars in each city we visit. The Tiki Lounge is in an area of town with plenty of bars to choose from (if tiki isn’t your thing) but I enjoyed it’s fun Polynesian decor and my Blue Hawaiian drink. We enjoyed all the restaurants we visited, which we chose based on local to our attractions and reviews on Yelp (our go-to restaurant rater). Central Ave Slice was a local pizza shop we ate at in the Perry North area. It’s in a town with great small town vibes and has delicious New York style pizza. Stack’d Burgers near the University of Pittsburgh offers a dizzying array of customizable burger choices, and Little Tokyo Bistro has delicious sushi and hibachi grilled food. We also enjoyed some ball park food at PNC Park along with a Pittsburgh staple, a Primanti Brothers Pittsburgher Cheese Steak.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All in all, Pittsburgh was a great city to visit and it would be nice to visit again to see some things we missed, like the Andy Warhol Museum. Hope these recommendations help you on your own trip to Pittsburgh!

The Western PA Pizza Tour
So last week I hopped a plane in Nashville and headed back to my hometown of Mt Pleasant, PA. I landed in Pittsburgh and wasted no time getting my fill of something I love as much as life itself....pizza!!! And let me tell you Western PA has no shortage of pizza and it mostly being served up by Mom and Pop shops and bars.
Mineo’s Pizza House
My first stop was Mineo’s Pizza House named by Tasting Table (a website for culinary enthusiasts) as the best pizza in all of Pennsylvania and one of the top 26 pizza places in the Country in May of 2017.
Mineo’s has two locations in the Pittsburgh area. Their family has been making pizzas since 1958. I dined at the Squirrel Hill location with my longtime friend that I’ve known since High School Rob Nace. Mineo’s is open till 1AM so if you get the craving late, they got your back.
We rolled in around 11:30pm and bellied up to the bar to order up a few Peroni drafts and an 8 cut....yes I said cut since most pizza joints in the area call their slices cuts. We waited maybe 20 minutes and out to the bar our pizza arrive. “Here Yinz Go” said the kind lady, who was obviously born and raised in the area with that unmistakable Western PA accent.
Tumblr media
I admit at first I was a bit skeptical when I saw the large amount of cheese on this pizza. This is normally a no no because as we know too heavy on the toppings makes for a sloppy soggy mess. However this was not the case here. Buried under all that beautiful cheese was a generous helping of pepperoni (Rob’s half had mushrooms..SMH). I took the first bite or two with a fork, only to realize just how perfectly done it was. The crust was crunchy yet had a nice chew to it. All with the ability to hold up all that beautiful cheese, which is grated in house daily along with house made dough and sauce.
The pizza was outstanding! Its so obvious that the family took pride in their pie, as you can always taste the difference when quality ingredients are used. The sauce has a unique spicy goodness to it, the cheese was of excellent quality and the crust had a very unique flavor all its own. So if your ever up around Da Burgh, you must try it. They also send pizzas via FedEx if your an out of towner and really gotta have one . Check out www.mineospizza.com
Lobingier’s Pizza
As I made my way back to Mt. Pleasant, one of the first things I want to do is call Lobingier’s on Main St to order up one of my favorite pizzas. As a kid, you were either of fan of Lobingier’s or the Village (which is just a few blocks up Main St.) Now, don’t get me wrong, the Village has a good pie, but Lobingier’s gets my vote every day (except Sunday - cause they are closed). From my parents house, you can see Lobingier’s from the back porch so there is no wonder why it was one of my go to places growing up. I mean I used to run a tab there for pizza and cokes after school. Come on! To this day, they still have that unforgettable homemade pizza that tastes exactly the same as it did when I was a child living on Yoder Ave.  Enough with the history lesson, let’s talk pizza...
The price may have gone up through the years, as a large pepperoni has gone from $5.50 to $10.50, but the quality and taste are unmistakable. The crunch of a perfectly baked crust, that sweet sauce combined with the perfect amount of cheese and my favorite topping, pepperoni, still stands the test of time.
Tumblr media
Recently, Lobingier’s added a White Pizza to the menu. This was my first time trying it and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. For those unfamiliar with White Pizza, it’s basically a olive oil base, topped with cheese, tomatoes, and a hint of garlic and oregano. So if you aren’t in the mood for a traditional pizza, I recommend you give this one a try.
Tumblr media
Oh and don’t forget to get yourself an order of Hot Cheese Balls. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
You can check out Lobingier’s on Facebook: Lobingier’s
So Lobingier’s and Mineo’s were so good...I had them twice!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bud Murphy’s
Billed on the sign out front as Bud Murphy’s World Famous Pizza, this is always a stop when I’m home. It has a Cheers feel to my family since when you walk in and sit down at the bar, everyone knows your name. Bud’s has a wide array of standard bar fare from sandwiches, salads, deep fried goodies, and such. But again we are here to talk about pizza.
Bud’s pizza is another of many local joints with a very unique flavor. The crust has a great chew to it and just crispy enough to support the generous amounts of sauce, cheese, and of course, pepperoni. To this day when I visit Bud’s, I can’t help but think about all the times I came here as a kid, popping quarters into the Pac-Man machine waiting for that piping hot pie. Bud Murphy’s is a Connellsville, PA institution that continues to provide good food and fun for generations to come.
Sorry we were hungry....
Tumblr media
You can check them out on Facebook: Bud Murphy’s
Slice on Broadway
If you are on the North Shore of Da Burgh, specifically heading to PNC park to take in a Pirates game (Go Reds!), stop by and grab a bite here. Open daily even when the Bucs aren’t playing, you can grab a New York style slice and a cold Iron City brew.
Tumblr media
Here’s their website to check them out: www.sliceonbroadway.com
Hope you enjoyed the Western PA Pizza Tour!
Stay Salty my friends!

Mopars Hit Hard At The Gatornats! Huge Super Stock Gallery!
The NHRA has started its big national event tour in the East at Gainesville Raceway in Florida for the past 48 seasons. Traditionally held in March, thousands of fans come down from cooler climes in the North to enjoy the weather of the Sunshine State and witness often record-setting times. The Gators were blessed with excellent conditions again for 2017. Of course, for those of us with a traditional sense of Mopar history, it is a wide variety of wheels-up Stockers and Super Stockers that makes this event a lot of fun. Coupled to special displays and exhibition runs, it was again a non-stop weekend of color and speed.
One big deal at this year’s event was the season debut of the School Of automotive Machinists (SAM) Factory Stock Showdown, which features late-model Drag Pak Challengers against Cobra Jet Mastangs and COPO Camaros. This is now a combined class of FS/XX supercharged and FS/X normally-aspirated entries, though the Gators program participants were all blown XX models. Geoff Turk, whose “Blackbird SR354” Drag Pak raced in Super Stock last season, was the only Dodge ready for this early season event, having spent most of March testing between Florida and his home in Illinois. There were 17 cars pushing for an elite qualified field of eight finalists. Anyone in XX or X trim who did not make the Showdown could be rotated back down into the normal Stock Eliminator program; the finalists would run a round on Saturday and the final two rounds on Sunday.
Turk, who campaigns the stealth-black car with the help of his wife Sandy, rolled off the trailer early Thursday morning into 30-degree weather and air that measured far below sea level. The trick to Factory Stock is finding the balance between wheelstand and traction due to the 9-inch tire width. The car’s engine is built along the lines of OEM components and must be legal under strict Stock eliminator rules.
The Turk car features horsepower built by Engine Masters Challenge winner Tony Bischoff (BES Racing); this is a highly-blueprinted example of the factory Drag Pak 354 supercharged engine. The car also uses a worked Coan transmission and converter; the body was painted in stealth black when the package was built at Roush, and was subsequently dialed in by MR2 Performance and Mike Roth for class racing. The name comes from Geoff’s interest in aviation history.
By running in Super Stock, Geoff had dialed the car in during 2016 and it is now the quickest Drag Pak in history. Indeed, even in milder FS trim earlier this season, the car is so quick that it ran -1.30 under the index at a points race the weekend before the Gators. The result was that NHRA added 28 pounds to the 354 Drag Pak combination automatically. Since the LX-platform car still cannot get down to the new 3,518-lb. weight regardless, it will have no effect. In fact, the car actually runs a little heavier than the 3,550-lb. minimum in the Factory Stock Showdown.
The first shot Thursday yielded an 8.264, placing him into the field which ranged from 8.15 to 8.39. Those numbers had tightened up after the second round of qualifying, so though the Dodge had run a solid 8.204, it remained sixth in the program, which now ranged from 8.10 to 8.23. As a result, Geoff decided to make the class eliminations round that afternoon, but conditions had changed and the Blackbird spun the tires right at the launch. This would set up a first-round meeting on Saturday afternoon with Chris Holbrook’s Mustang, which was the number-two qualifier. Unfortunately, it had the same result; a light wheelstand that almost immediately unloaded the tires to end the Blackbird and 354 Drag Pak’s efforts in the first SAM Factory Stock Showdown.
Meanwhile, action continued in many other classes, and the following pictorial will give you the Sportsman lowdown from Gator-town, Mopar style!
Geoff Turk brought out the only Drag Pak for the season-opening SAM Factory Stock Showdown. This photo was taken during the excellent qualifying sessions on Thursday, with the resultant 8.20 putting the car into the program.
Turk’s great-looking car makes use of the legendary hypersonic ramjet spy plane of the United States military for graphics. Living up to its namesake, the Blackbird is the quickest and fastest Drag Pak presently in existence.
The car uses a “spec” 354 Drag Pak engine that has been approved for the class and blueprinted by BES Racing. Keeping the “stock” in Factory Stock is a big part of NHRA’s challenge for 2017. The Chrysler engineers are already working on the next generation of the engine.
This year’s big Super Stock wheelstand winner was a tough call, but it had to go to Brad Plourd of Holly Pond, Alabama, who consistently put the nose of this FGT/L ’74 Duster way in the air and maxed out the wheelie bar travel. He went four rounds, and several additional photos are in the gallery.
For the late models, there were a number of cars in Stock that also got air. The prize for 2017 goes to Stephen Smyth of Uxbridge, MA. Running in his family’s Port-A-Tree ’09 Dodge, Smyth kept the fans on their feet during qualifying and class with runs like this, though the car finally got up too high and cost him a round-one victory.
One of the cars going furthest in eliminations of any Chrysler vehicle was long-time Mopar competitor Wes Leopold Jr. The former Max Wedge racer from the Pittsburgh area is now competing in Competition Eliminator with an A/SMA ’05 Avenger. He went to the final round in the highly-technical division.
Driving furthest into Super Stock was the GT/LA 2000 Sebring of Michael Volkman, who used consistency to advance to the final round. Like Leopold, the pressure was on and a foul start was the result.
Leah Pritchett agreed to drive an SRT-built Challenger Drag Pak experimental between her runs in the Papa John’s Pizza fuel dragster. With some tuning work, the car eventually ran a 9.30 best, with Papa John Schnatter’s Camaro in the other lane.
Pritchett took the effort seriously, seen here talking with SRT engineer Mike Rossey as they dialed the car during the weekend. Though she did not win Top Fuel, she is still the points leader leaving this event.
Dennis Breeden was top qualifier in Super Stock with his 2010 Challenger. The Plainville, Indiana native went 9.43 on the 10.55 index, good enough for the sixth spot.
In Stock, it was the 1963 383 Dodge of Thomas Auger of Florida. This car will be familiar to some enthusiasts, as former Top Fuel driver Jim Bailey raced it during the past several seasons with Max Wedge power.
2016 US Nationals Hemi Challenge winner Jimmy Daniels was part of the strong SS/AH Hemi car field, with five entries on hand this year. He ran an 8.22 best.
Notwithstanding, Dan Zrust’s Barracuda went furthest in eliminations out of all the ’68 Hemi machines, making it to round three and losing on a “heart-breakout,” 8.979 on an 8.98 dial in.
Coolest OEM-look muscle car honors should be assigned to Jerry Hatch from Lubec, Maine. A ’70 Challenger classed into SS/EA, this EV2-paint with Six Pack power put up both big numbers and big wheels-up launches. He eventually went to the semi-finals of Super Stock.
Big Dave Collette qualified seventh with his 2011 Challenger, classed in FSS/F. The Perryville, Maryland-based car features colorful paint and was another popular car for the Mopar fans to cheer for. Alas, he went home after round one.
Ohio resident Bob Marshall’s 1965 “Dodge Material” Hemi Coronets have been part of Gatornationals since the 1970s. He keeps this car a little lower to the ground these days but it is still a popular machine. It was also the only B-Body Hemi car at this year’s event.

The 5th Annual Frigid Bitch: …not the coldest, …not the warmest, …not the longest…
Tumblr media
At 9am on Saturday February 17th, 2018, the race organizer drove down to the north shore trail to check for ice and found herself staring at the river. There was no trail. Pittsburgh was flooded, the Point was underwater, the steps and railings leading down to the trail were protruding out of 10 extra feet of river along with signage and street lights. Well shit. That would fuck up the route map. Or would it? One of the checkpoints was on the West End Bridge, (or more accurately - under it, in the pedestrian tunnel) and most cyclists would either know or check the map and see the best way to get there is to take the trail. But from the kayak rental station under the Three Sisters Bridges to the Carnegie Science Center, the trail was The Allegheny. Well, if anyone follows the map and ends up staring into the river, we’ll chalk that up to race-day obstacles. They’ll just have to find their way around it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Set up started early at Spirit, bike-rack equipped cars were already in the lot, and randonneur extraordinaire Monica VanDieran popped in first thing for the second year in a row to grab her spokecard, manifest and shirt. A steady stream of ladies rolled into the upper lodge to register and claim a corner to huddle over their maps and start plotting routes. An hour later an announcement was made that the race would start in 30 minutes and we were at 95 registered racers, so call your friends! Pittsburgh Babes on Bikes had decided that for our 5th year, in an attempt to beat all known previous records of ladies cycling fields, 100% of the registration fee would be donated to the Greater Pittsburgh Women’s Shelter if the race broke 100 riders. 10 minutes later Ngani Ndimble and Franky Montenegro registered as 99 and 100 and a great cheer erupted around the hall. In that moment, hundreds of dollars were pledged to the Shelter and the Frigid Bitch established itself as Pittsburgh’s biggest ladies’-only race ever. Ten minutes after that, the rules and general info for the race were announced from the stage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Make as many checkpoints as you can. Go in any order, via any route. Ride however you want, but DON’T GET HURT. Watch out for potholes. Make sure the volunteers get your spokecard number before you roll out! If Paul Beaver tries to make you do something stupid, don’t listen to him. Don’t give my volunteers any shit. Unless they’re Paul Beaver, then give him as much shit as you want. Checkpoints close at 2, race ends at 3. You must be back at Spirit at 3pm! When you get back, FIND ME to check in. Any questions???
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From there, the crowd started heading outside to gear up, unlock their bikes, and pile onto the street. One of the volunteers walked out and said “Damn, there’s so many ladies out here! It looks like we’re about to take down the government or something!” Still 5 minutes from the start, the clusterfuck on 51st street started to back up towards Stanton ave. Incoming brunchers were stuck between Butler st and Spirit, and very few racers felt inclined to make way. The clock ticked towards noon. Returning 2017 racers laughed that the light at the end of the street would again be red for the start, so at the last second the proverbial starting shot was moved to the moment that light turned green. A panicky last-minute rider showed up to register, and 106 kick-ass Frigid Bitch racers surged forward towards the checkpoints!
Tumblr media
THE CHECKPOINTS The Button The closest checkpoint to the starting location was the Button, a concrete slab on the side of the river that doubles as a semi-secret hang-out spot. The route map showed a set of railroad tracks at the end of a nearby street, which had to be followed on the diagonal across an off-camber grassy stretch. Originally, volunteers were going to stand on the button and make racers ditch their bikes, climb down a rooty mud cliff, and clamber up next to them to get credit for the stop. HOWEVER, when the guys arrived to set up the checkpoint, they immediately realized that was not going to work. The button was completely submerged in the river. No trace of it was there to be seen. So instead, they built a fire on the traintracks and told racers they’d make extra points for shotgunning a beer (untrue). "A" for effort!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stanton Ave Another nearby checkpoint was not at all secret - the top of the well-known brutally long climb that is Stanton Ave. Impossible to approach from any direction without slogging up one of many hills, your only option is steep or steeper. A lot of racers opted to get this checkpoint out of the way first, and then stop for a minute for one of Bruce’s hot toddies at the fire station. Hell yeah!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Troy Hill Stairs For anyone who decided to hit the button first and then make their way west, the next checkpoint down the river was the massive staircase that connects the sidewalk along route 28 to Troy Hill. Shane was hanging out at the bottom to let everyone know that the checkpoint…was much closer to the top. Some carried their bikes with them (most ditched them with Shane, who ended up fixing a few), hiked up the winding steps and were greeted by a cheerleading squad toting pickles, pineapple, whiskey, and a cowbell. Zack was hopping around and playing “Ring My Bell” by Anita Ward over and over and over on his boombot, and Ryan was yelling for racers to…wait for it…. ring the bell! to get credit for the stop. Frigid Bitch volunteers are the best!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The West End Bridge Further down the river past the flooded out North Shore, riders had to find the staircase leading up to the West End Bridge’s pedestrian tunnel! Helpfully, Paul Beaver had decorated them out with balloons, and Tim brought back his creepy friend to point the ladies in the right direction. Colin had set up a camp stove with mulled wine and coffee in the tunnel for anyone who needed to heat up some. There was a group of ladies who sure enough, not realizing the river was flooded, not knowing another way around, made it to the washed out section of the trail and decided they were gonna just ride through the water, fuck it. “I didn’t know when I showed up for this race that I’d be biking through the Allegheny River!” Drenched, they rode with frozen feet, until Tim pulled a couple pairs of socks outta his truck and doled em out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Water Tower on the Hill In the middle of the city, the diva of the checkpoints was the Hill District Water Tower. Anyone following the route map would go across Bigelow Blvd (either up the fast-paced bridge and through a shitty intersection, or along the sidewalk and then up and down the stairs to the pedestrian overpass), up a gnarly hill, up a worse hill, up a staircase, up a brick road, and then either find the dirt trail through the park or climb up a grass embankment where volunteers made them hug the water tower before they could move on. It ruled! Even riders who trekked their own way to the tower found themselves winding up potholed-nightmare roads and climbing other staircases.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Wheel Mill and Pocusset The two furthest checkpoints out were also some of the most straight forward - pretty much everyone knows where the Wheel Mill is, and Pocusset is a street that’s been turned by the city into a cyclist-only road connecting Squirrel Hill to the Greenfield Bridge. The Wheel Mill, almost at the city limits, was the furthest checkpoint from the start. The lack of traffic on Pocusset is great, but it’s also a super windy hill, and one rider bombed down it so fast in her determination to kick ass she slid out, terrifying the volunteers. She knows how to power through tho, and made it to the finish beat up but in good time. Pittsburgh was flooding, but the temps were freezing and halfway through the race snow and sleet had started falling. When riders finished and bolted down the steps of Spirit to yell out their spokecard #s, water sprayed from their helmets, down their faces and careened off their noses and gloves to spray anyone around them. Alex K said she had to ride her fixie from the button to the finish line with her signature heart-shaped sunglasses clenched in her teeth bc they were all snowed over. Ladies arrived, soaked and grinning about how hard and terrible and awesome the race was. Women who had just moved here a few months ago came out and met new cyclists, complete strangers rode together, one racer said she had been spectating at the Dirty Dozen when a woman she didn’t know asked her if she’d ever heard of the Frigid Bitch. “No, but I googled it and it looked fun so I just came out!” They were packing into the bar, taking over the tables and floor space, ordering pizza and drying out while the numbers were crunched and the results were tallied.

The Donation This exhilarating bitch of a race definitely has its obstacles - from the cold, snow, ice, floods, stairs, mud, brick… - but registration fees won’t be one of them. As long as we are running it, it will always be $5. With 106 registered racers, all of whom made it to the minimum 1 checkpoint, the registration money in its entirety will be donated to the Women’s Shelter this year. Inspired by that goal, registration #s were matched by two outside benefactors, bringing the amount raised to $905. Congratulations to all the ladies who hauled themselves to Spirit; YOU made that happen! Two decades ago 100 pro cyclist women raced the streets of Pittsburgh in pursuit of the US championship and a $25,000 prize purse. This year at the Frigid Bitch you broke that record in the pursuit of alley-cat glory and support of victims of domestic violence. Pgh Babes on Bikes is so proud, and grateful for making our 100+ rider dream come true, we are going to bump that number up to $1,000. Cuz it just feels like a good number to put on a check. THANK YOU to all of the racers who came out to bust apart records, kick ass and grant wishes. Thanks to all the volunteers, for showing up, cheering, bringing hot booze, doing hilarious shit and gettin creative with your stops! Thanks to the photographers for memorializing this race forever and catching everyone’s glee and embarrassing moments! Thank you to the video team; we CAN’T WAIT to see what you do with the race footage! Thank you to my lovely assistants and stage bouncer, and to my little brother for the epic, amazing, incredible artwork. THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS, who donate mountains of swag so no matter how big our numbers get, everyone gets rad stuff!

Frigid Bitch 2017 Results
The Frigid Bitch 2017 was epic. Not the same way 2016's Bitch was epic: no snowstorms, no ice, no subzero wind chills. This time, finally, the Frigid Bitch did not manage to fall on the coldest shittiest day of the year. February 11th 2017, while bookended by cold as fuck weekends, was a testament to the upswing in unseasonably warm weather, lending some cheeky volunteers to dub it the "Tepid Bitch." Nevertheless, the event smashed records if not with the temperature, with the crowds. Eighty-two women came out to race; exactly twice as many as last year, and a number that is surpassed in Pittsburgh's women's races only by the 1997 US Pro Women's Championship at the Thrift Drug Classic (a race that, perhaps relevantly, offered a $25,000 prize purse to the 100 women field).
Tumblr media
Local racers met at Spirit to register, chow on pizza brunch, and strategize their routes. Comin in hot from Philly was a car full of killer ladies, burning time stuck on the turnpike trying to make the start!
Tumblr media
Everyone else got their manifest at registration; the Philly babes got theirs via text message.

Crowds of exuberant ladies lined up on and took over 51st st in Lawrenceville, tucking their spoke cards into their wheels, picking their layers, talking route and generally havin' a good time.

At 1pm the whistle blew and they were off! Aaand the light at the end of the street immediately turned red to give advantage to those willing to run it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CHECK POINTS! The 9 total checkpoints were split into 4 open for the first hour of the race, 4 open for the second, and one open the whole time. The split in times for checkpoint locations essentially doubled the distance racers had to ride to hit every spot, and forced them to gamble on whether their speed got them to final checkpoints before they closed. Rialto Though one of the closest checkpoints from the start, as one of the 13 hills hundreds of riders race up every November for the agonizing Dirty Dozen LINK , Rialto was definitely the most intimidating chunk of this year's Bitch. Racers huffed it up the 27% grade…or took the sidewalk stairs.

Free Ride Pittsburgh's best DIY non profit bike work shop brought racers out to the edge of the East End.

The Cathedral of Learning Towering above Pitt campus and taking up a whole city block, the Cathedral is kinda hard to miss. Hardest part was probably finding the right entrance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Schenley Oval A staple of the urban Pgh racing scene, racers sped down Washington Blvd to check themselves off at the barren mid-winter bike track. The Point When the fountain at Point State Park was used as a checkpoint at the very first "frozen fountain" themed Frigid Bitch, racers belted across a crackling frozen snowscape towards the popsicled volunteers in the distance. This year? Less snow, more step riding.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Penn Brewery It's the oldest brewery in Pittsburgh, people generally know where it is! Need we say more?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Phipps Conservatory A lot of racers decided to hit the Cathedral as the last of their first-half checkpoints and then immediately sail the very short distance over to Phipps, where volunteers were waiting. With smiles. And cookies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Highland Park Reservoir Another staple loop for Pgh urban cyclists and checkpoint in the original Frozen Fountains Frigid Bitch, the HP Res was significantly less icy this year.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Penitentiary Looming at the very end of the North Shore Trail, the Penitentiary stands as a portal to Riverview Park, the Mckees Rocks Bridge and Neville Island, home of Pgh's abandoned velodrome. Tho it was the furthest checkpoint from Spirit, over half the racers bolted up and down the trail setting Strava records to make it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THE FINISH Racers had to make it back to Spirit before the cut off, make it snappy with the bike locks and elbow their way through crowds to find ALK and get a time in.
Tumblr media
Ladies grabbed pizza, ordered drinks, and compared race strategies and routes during the hour it took to crunch the results. Three prize tables were set up next to the stage with a mountain of swag donated from all our amazing sponsors, enough for literally every single one of the 81 racing women to go home with multiple grabs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They gabbed, they took stock of the goods, and they waited, until finally….

MEGA THANKS to all of our sponsors, without which I doubt we'd have gotten 80+ women to show up and race! Thank you to all the dudes (and some ladies) who volunteer every year, usually having to lounge around in freezing temps for a few hours and always smiling. I can never thank our photographers enough, without yinz we wouldn't have the hundreds of killer photographs to turn into profile pics, instagram posts, and, crucially, race hype for next year! Thank you Spirit Pgh for hosting, Bike Pgh for lending the racks, Di-ay and Qat for helping screen the shirts and bandanas, Mattie Cannon for being a general day-of assistant, and Thomas Kempen for the AWESOME flyer image! If you loved reading about this race but wish it had been a rough snowy icy for-real FRIGID event, check out the results from Frigid Bitch 2016.
