Long thread - overall Ted Lasso theory
After S2, I felt that Rupert was a silent owner/investor in the VC firm & that he was going to use it ruin Rebecca. I felt the offer from the VC to Keeley was fishy because they gave her the news via an email. Keeley could’ve just informed everyone of her news. We didn’t specifically need that scene, seeing her receive an email, so including it is a clue. Now as of S3, I’ve got an idea of what’s going on.
TLDR: Yes, it's a crazy theory & likely debunked next week, but this is a crazy season. Football is just a distraction. Rupert played the long game and is out for revenge, alienating Rebecca from Keeley, alienating Nate from Ted and trying to destroy AFC Richmond through financial ruin and/or scandal. Keeley, Higgins and Nate will work together to bring him down, save the team and save Rebecca because they are a found family.
Rupert is a narcissist and plays the long game. He hates that Rebecca bested him in the divorce and he hates that Ted humiliated him in front of a pub full of people & saved Rebecca embarrassment at the auction. Rupert also told Rebecca that she would end up alone if she left him.
Rupert is seeking revenge. So what does he do?
He works on a vulnerable Nate. He buys West Ham and gives Ted’s protegé an offer he can’t refuse, taking him away from Ted (post S2)
Who is Rebecca’s protegé? Keeley. But Keeley isn’t as gullible.
The VC funds Keeley’s own PR firm. This separates her from Rebecca.
There was a big “hint” in Keeley & Rebecca’s chat about her moving on. She pointedly tells Keeley, “Promise me you will not go and work for him”. To me, that’s huge foreshadowing (S2E12).
So I think Rupert is funding Keeley’s firm. I thought the firm would force Keeley to represent West Ham but that hasn’t happened yet. It still could.
What has happened? Jack.
Jack has come to mentor Keeley. She is the head of the VC who funded the company. Where do we meet her for the first time? At a West Ham game.
What happens? Over the next seven weeks, she seems to replace Keeley’s other mentor and best friend. Keeley then misses out on being there for Rebecca. Rebecca is alone… just like Rupert said she would be.
So if Rupert is secretly in charge of the VC, he has separated Nate from Ted, and he’s separated Keeley from Rebecca (and unknowingly from Roy as well).
And it’s possible Bantr is legit but also it might be a scam - if you screen grab, the visual interface on their app had errors which are kind of fishy (the show is known for its attention to detail & this is an Apple show).
So my more far-fetched theory is that Rupert is somehow hacking the app and getting information on people, kind of like another famous billionaire named Rupert whose tabloids had a famous phone hacking scandal years ago in England. Art imitating life?
This could wreak havoc for Sam and Rebecca but again, it could also lead to it being tracked back to him.
Speaking of Sam, I do recall that Rupert specifically mentions he would put Obisanya back to defence “where he belongs”.
Sam comes into his own in the new position, proving Ted was right and Rupert was wrong.
Then the whole Dubai Air scandal. Dubai specifically requested Sam knowing full well that Sam is Nigerian and that their parent company is wrecking his country. I’m sure Richard Cole (Rupert’s friend) did that purposely. I think the oil company thought it was being clever using a footballer.
Dubai Air unsurprisingly pulls out their support after Sam’s protest. Sam Obisanya now has an enemy.
So Richard Cole, Rupert’s friend, now hates Sam Obisanya and Rupert is likely ticked he has been proven wrong by Ted who moved Sam to forward.
Going forward my belief/theory is that Keeley is the key in bringing Rupert down with the help of Higgins and eventually Nate.
Whether Keeley figures out Jack is working with Rupert or Jack confesses due to feelings for Keeley I’m not sure yet. But regardless, Keeley finds out and I think this will be at the same time she and Roy begin to reconnect. He will believe in her and it will help make her stronger. In turn, she gets him to truly open up and it frees him to be a better man to everyone, including himself.
She enlists Higgins as a long-time employee of Rupert’s and her trusted friend and this will provide Higgins the opportunity to truly repay her for his complicity with Rupert. Higgins knows Rupert's secrets that others don't. He knows how he works. He can help Keeley find stuff either in their club or perhaps even more far-fetched going and working for Rupert. The offer was there and it's easier to find stuff on the inside. (Unlikely, but it would harken back to Higgins line, "I'm not a spy, Rebecca". 😁)
Nate will be able to show his regret by helping bring Rupert down and he is forgiven. And who knows? Maybe even Bex will help out.
Having Keeley be the one to discover all this shows how competent she really is even if things go sour with the PR firm - which may hot happen. The other members of the VC might be happy to get rid of Rupert. We'll see.
Possible things that happen? They end up stopping leaks from getting out about Sam & Rebecca? Or maybe stuff gets out about Sam & Rebecca and they figure out that Bantr must be compromised.
I think the point is that Keeley, Higgins, Ted et al will rally around and protect Rebecca. She will see she is loved.
Also, if they can prove that Rupert is behind the VC and Bantr, there might be some conflict-of-interest laws and security laws he’s breaking by them being AFC Richmond’s sponsor. Potentially criminal if he’s a “silent” partner. Cooking the books at AFC Richmond is also a possibility.
So yes, it's all crazy, but this show drives me crazy! Tune in next week for a brand new theory once this all has been debunked!
