Why Eucalyptus Sheets Are Expensive?
Up until recent years, there were only a few material choices for bedding. In the mid to late 2000s, companies started joining the “green” movement. More innovative and eco-friendly ways were created to make the most comfortable sleep environment. Now a day, Shopping for the best bedding can be a difficult task. It can be a time-consuming process through trial and error while wasting money on a product that either irritates your skin, becomes scratchy after just a few months, or contributes to many hot, sweaty, sleepless nights. So yes, finding the perfect sheet set can get complicated.
Eucalyptus Sheet, crafted from Eucalyptus Trees is the best fiber for bedding purpose in both seasons because they are cool in summers and warm in winters. In 2009, Valley Forge Fabrics partnered with a company in Austria that was producing eucalyptus fibers. These fibers were so soft, so incredibly durable, and all without the use of any harsh chemicals like the 12 toxic chemicals bamboo use to process. Not only were the eucalyptus fibers eco-friendlier to produce, it was found that they are significantly healthier to sleep on, than typical bamboo or cotton sheets. These amazing sheets are the absolute best sheets to buy. These sheets are comfortable and luxurious of all other fabrics as they have natural tendency to fight with allergenic and bacterial infections. Also it is softer and heat resistant fabric which makes then extremely unique of all.
Here are some of the key features which make these sheets expensive among all other fabrics like cotton and linen.
Cool Sheets:
With all the lovely things summer brings, sticky, sweaty nights are definitely not one of them. If you live in an area like Karachi (Sticky in summers), Multan (Hottest of all) with only a low-powered window AC unit to keep you cool as the temperature rises, you know the struggle. The solution to those summer nights that are just too irritating and uncomfortable, try eucalyptus sheets. These sheets have tendency to remain Cool even if it’s Sunstroke outside. The breathable fabric is cool to the touch and able to help regulate the body temperature.
Moisture Proof:
These sheets have tendency to wick away any moisture and sweat which leads towards comfortable sleep. We all exhale warm, wet air when we sleep, and faster drying fabric result in a much healthier and clean bed.
Hypoallergenic Stuff:
§  The Fabric is completely hypoallergenic and it resists bacterial growth which is the key feature to make this fabric ecofriendly. This fabric dries 30% faster than Polyester and Cotton, allowing less opportunity for bacteria to grow. Eucalyptus sheets are most popular for its ability to clear congestion due to colds, coughs, flu, and asthma. The luxury bedding naturally repels dust mites, bed bugs, pet dander, and more.
 Process to Make the fabric:
To make such kind of sheets 100% Eucalyptus Lyocell is used which makes them cool and extremely luxurious.
 Process of coloring the Fabric:
Another main feature which is totally different from other fabrics are that they are dyed with natural ingredients like pomegranate, turmeric and gardenia which are then dried, ground into a powder and mixed with water to create a dye bath. These dyes are mostly available in six beautiful color sall of which come from plant-based natural dyes. The peaceful light blue hue, is dyed using indigo, safflower, and rose, while the darling blush shade comes from a combination of walnut, turmeric, and gardenia which makes it free of chemicals.
 Washing Process:
When we talk about washing than 90% of the energy used to wash your linens and clothes goes to heating water. It is highly recommended that for washing purpose, one should quit heating and switch towards cold water to slash emissions and preservation of color. One more feature which makes it an ecofriendly fabric of all is that it soaks less water than cotton and any other fabric that is normally used.
 Importance in the Market:
One of the reason this fabric is prioritized in the market is that this fabric gets softer after every wash which is a completely opposite feature than any other fabric. If someone says that it is the fabric that is breathable than cotton and softer than linen, it wouldn’t be wrong.
 Growth of Eucalyptus Trees:
Mainly grown in the areas like Austria and Czech Republic, this fabric has an extremely rare market which makes it expensive of all other fabrics. Eucalyptus is best for those with sensitive or easily inflamed skin.
Easy to Use and Comfortable to Set:
With deep pockets that fit mattresses up to 20 inches thick, this sheet set is a good pick for large beds, too. Twin-size sets include one pillowcase, and all other sizes include two. The fibers are also less prone to wrinkling, making these sheets look and feel luxurious with less care. The hospitality industry was always aware of all the benefits eucalyptus sheets were offering and has incorporated them into their bedding programs across the World.
  Thread Count:
Thread count has not always been particularly important in the purchasing of sheets. But once textile companies began experimenting with the manufacturing process to create materials with thread counts over 1,000, customers took notice. Now, thread count, the number of individual strands of thread in a square inch of fabric, is virtually synonymous with quality when it comes to bedding. While thread count alone isn’t the only way to tell a bed sheet’s quality, it remains a fairly reliable indicator of a sheet set’s softness and durability, as well as its price tag.
 Pricing:
In terms of cost, you can find sheets for around the same price from other popular home startups. Snowe's queen-sized Sateen Set is $220 after discount, Brook linen's Luxe Sateen is $159, and Parachute's Sateen Set is $149 (though it costs an additional $100 to add a top sheet). Obviously, Buffy's set is unique in being made from eucalyptus fiber. Buffy's sheets are among favorite sheets of all-time. They're wonderfully silky and cool-to-the-touch, and they actually deliver on being softer than any linen sheets and more breathable than any cotton sets, these Sheet sets range from $169 to $229 and a queen-size set will cost you $199.

Home flooring is a simple and classic way to sell your home for more money on the market today. Home flooring takes a beating every single day whilst entrusted with a monumental task: determining the design tone for your whole household. The picture-perfect pages of your Pottery Barn Pinterest board don’t reflect the family pet shedding settled deep into your living-room carpet fibers or the typical wear-and-tear of your wood floorings.
You can bet, though, that prospective buyers who visit your home for showings have those magazine images in mind. They not only would like floors in excellent condition, however materials that go with the purpose of every room and appear like a million bucks.
” Flooring, in my point of view, is usually an affordable expense, yet you get a much higher yield on your financial investment,” suggested Leighann Russell, a real estate professional in the Atlanta area who’s got 329 transactions under her belt to date.
Our experts undertook all the ROI investigation around several styles of floorings and identified what’s trending (spoiler: hard wood’s still king), and also spoke to an interior designer with 30 years of expertise who has her own line of hard wood flooring.
So the short answer to “does new flooring increase home value?” is yes– if you’re wise about your selections. The right upgrades also make your home sell more quickly on the market. Follow these 5 expert strategies to get the most out of this practical property financial investment.
1. Pick Wood Flooring to Sell Your Home For More Money
Sometimes you simply cannot beat a classic. And even when it relates to houses and the kind of floor purchasers really like, hardwood floorings have definitely stood the test of time.
Through the 18th century, wood made floors progressed from bare lumber, to check or geometric decorated planks to go well with the ornate decor of the times. In the late 1800s, the glossed wood floorings so prominent in American houses today began being manufactured in mass. These days, any prospective buyer who walks into a home will probably gush over the stunning hardwood floorings if your house can provide it.
54% of house prospective buyers want to spend more for wooden floorings when acquiring a home– up to $2,080 more, according to data coming from the National Association of Realtors.
Tumblr media
And revealing that wood floorings aren’t solely preferred among luxury home prospective buyers, a 2017 survey from the National Association of Home Builders found that 87% percent of buyers in the $100,000 to $149,999 price range desire wood floor.
Both timeless and extremely versatile, hardwood is even more durable over the long haul than carpet and rugs. Both of which have to be replaced about every decade. Re-coating wooden floors every three to 5 years or refinishing them every Eight to ten years can make them last for the long haul.
What should you project to invest in the total plan that is hardwood flooring?
Installing about 300 square feet of pre-finished hardwood floor sells at approximately $2,700 to $3,800 nationwide, also including building materials and labor costs. (By means of comparison, adding the equivalent amount of carpets costs a nationwide average of approximately $1,300 to $1,800.).
Rates fluctuate by location and contractor, of course. The very best method to find out just how much the job would cost you is to assemble a handful of estimates from nearby experts.
However, to get a range for your area, Porch (which possesses data on over half a million projects) offers this Hardwood Floor Install Cost Calculator that gives you a rate range personalized to your ZIP code.
How Do The Various Types of Wood Differ in Costs?
Even within hardwood floors, there are various cuts, degrees of thickness, and lumber varieties that impact cost:
Stained Red Oak: Among the most common wood-strip flooring all over the country, stained red oak costs around $3.30 per square foot.
Black Cherry: Black Cherry, which has an all-natural cinnamon pigmentation that deepens with age, costs about $4.90 per square foot.
Rusty-Hued Heart Pine: Sought-after in Southern households considering that frontier times, rusty-hued heart pine falls in between at about $4 per square foot.
White Ash: Light in color but sturdier, white ash costs around $5.60 per square foot.
2. You Can Do Wood– And Floors That Resemble The Appearance– On A Budget
If you like the look of wood however need to improve your floor on a budget, you’ve got various options at your disposal. Carpets and vivid throw rugs are still well-liked, and environment-friendly and organic materials and cutting-edge styles mean that homeowners have more flooring options than ever.
Vinyl: Versatile however not as sturdy Long-inexpensive sheet vinyl floor can be found in a range of contemporary designs like artificial hexagon marble mosaic tile, porcelain, and even stained and distressed reclaimed wood. Despite the fact that it will not improve your house’s value as well as the true wood floor since it’s not as long-lasting. Sheets of vinyl flooring merely cost from $0.75 to $4 per square foot, plus setup, and can last from 10-20 years. Vinyl planks and tiles cost around $5 per square foot, however, homeowners generally can install those themselves.
Linoleum for the Long Haul Linoleum is another long-wearing but extremely versatile alternative, running about $4 to $6 per square foot for sheets and tiles, and about $7 to $9 for click-together pieces, plus installation. It’s created from renewable building materials, recyclable, and naturally antistatic as well as antimicrobial, though not water-proof. It additionally requires resealing almost every five years or so. Installing about 300 square feet sells for approximately about $1,100 to $1,400 nationally.
Pick Wood With Character Hardwood floor additionally is available in a variety of “grades” which describes the particular qualities of the product. Lumber is naturally occurring and bound to have some character! Some lumber backyards promote affordable oak flooring, with more variation in shade, knots, and streaks. You can get “rustic” or “utility” grade wood with more blemishes and imperfections– or some might say character– for a discount. In the right place, sheets of 2 × 4-foot plywood that are stained and sealed as flooring planks can produce a rustic look for a fraction of the price tag, about $0.70 per square foot.
Grab A Paintbrush For A Quick Remodeling Other affordable options for new flooring include carpet tiles, which cost under $2 per square foot in a range of tones and styles; and painting the floor. Yes, paint can cover wood, cement, tile, or linoleum flooring that have actually seen much better days, and there are specialized items that make the preparation and surface stunning. Nationwide, the typical cost of painting 300 square feet of flooring varieties from about $400 to $900. Get motivated by these 22 painted floor designs from Home Flooring Pros, which offers in-depth customer guides on home floor covering.
3. Select Floors That Make Sense For The Space’s Daily Traffic
Looks matter when it pertains to flooring, however so does standard daily use.
Kitchen areas and entryways need a material that can handle heavy foot traffic, one reason that ceramic tile is a frequent choice here– and why a more difficult wood such as oak or hickory holds up well here, too.
Tumblr media
However, solid wood floor covering is a poor option for a basement, where high humidity can warp the wood. (A crafted wood flooring is more stable).
Because of humidity and water, a strong wood floor likewise is a bad choice for bathrooms. (Check out this guide from the National Wood Flooring Association for more ideas about selecting types of wood flooring and finishes.)
The floor covering’s foundation likewise will influence your spending plan and flooring option. For example, if you rip out carpeting to find concrete or tile underneath, your brand-new floor covering requires to be a click-together drifting choice or floor covering that can be glued down– nothing that needs nails.
4. Select Colors With Broad Appeal That Fit Your Home’s Design
Russell stated she’s seen that a lot of buyers tend to desire “tile in the bathrooms; hardwoods in the main” part of your home– but that does not mean you’re limited to the shade of brown.
For wood flooring, some color combinations and textures expected to be popular in 2019 are neutrals stemmed from nature, stated Emily Morrow Finkell, a Georgia interior designer with 30 years of experience who sells wood flooring through the Emily Morrow Home Collection.
These consist of:
Dark charcoal black that results in a matte, silky appearance.
Rich brown, particularly in walnut woods.
Bermuda stone gray, a go-to backdrop that bridges other design and color styles quickly.
Off-white similar to French limestone.
Matte off-white is similar to gesso and plaster.
Interior design junkies: watch on these patterns. And for sellers, discover something that’s in style but also fits with your house and interest a vast array of purchasers.
Russell added that purchasers like floor covering with gray and brown tones because of the maintenance element. “People aren’t going as dark since it shows everything,” she said.
5. Be Aware Of The Overall Flow In Between Living Spaces
If you do pick to change your floors to improve your home’s value, make certain to watch on the big picture– how well the floor covering flows from room to room. Purchasers do not like floors that create a patchwork of colors and finishes.
A professional flooring business will take a look at your home’s floor plan to examine that each shift between rooms looks right– which with wood, for instance, might involve sanding and refinishing surfaces so that they’re level and the color matches well.
“You absolutely don’t want to walk into the foyer that’s a cherry color, and then your dining room and your living room off to the left and the right are 3 shades lighter,” Russell stated. “You want to match it to what you already have as good as you can so that you get that flow sensation when the buyer first strolls in the door.”
Purchase Flooring as The ‘Canvas’ Of The Home
As Morrow Finkell explains on her site: “Home interior design begins with the floor. The flooring is your blank canvas and it determines every design decision you’ll make once it’s down.”.
Not every home buyer is a design aficionado. Regardless, your floors are among the first things they’ll discuss when they stroll into your home due to the fact that it sets the whole tone. Pick your products based upon toughness and style, and it will be a financial investment you won’t be sorry for.
Long-inexpensive sheet vinyl floor covering comes in a variety of modern styles like faux hexagon marble mosaic tile, porcelain, and even stained and distressed reclaimed wood. It will not improve your home’s value as well as real wood floor covering since it’s not as long-lasting, sheets of vinyl floor covering just cost from $0.75 to $4 per square foot, plus installation, and can last from 10-20 years.
Hardwood flooring likewise comes in different “grades” which refers to the particular qualities of the material. Other economical options for brand-new flooring include carpet tiles, which cost under $2 per square foot in a range of shades and styles; and painting the flooring. Get motivated by these 22 painted floor designs from Home Flooring Pros, which provides thorough consumer guides on home floor covering.

Tumblr media
WILMINGTON, Del. – A bio-based materials company, a maker of wearable medical sensors, and a bakery-café were among the 10 Delaware small businesses recognized Thursday as awardees of the second round of EDGE Grants from the state Division of Small Business.
Governor John Carney, Secretary of State Jeff Bullock, and Division of Small Business Director Damian DeStefano announced the companies at an event Thursday at the Carvel State Office Building in Wilmington.
“It is incredible to see what the innovative entrepreneurs in this state are accomplishing,” said Governor Carney. “Their companies span a wide range of industries, but the one thing the owners share is the drive and determination necessary to start then grow their businesses. I am glad the State is able to support their work through initiatives like the EDGE Grant program.”
EDGE Grants provide a 3-to-1 match for each dollar an eligible business spends on qualified expenses that improve the company’s long-term chances of success, from market analysis to website design to acquiring essential equipment.
The State awarded grants this round to 10 companies, listed below. Five STEM Class companies are receiving a total of $495,000, and five Entrepreneur Class businesses are receiving a total of $216,000.
“EDGE Grants are helping to level the playing field for promising Delaware small companies as they compete with more established, larger businesses,” said Secretary of State Jeff Bullock. “And this program is just one of the many ways the Division of Small Business, since it was created under the Department of State three years ago, has made a strong, positive impact on the state’s economy by assisting hardworking business owners.”
EDGE launched in May, and the first grant round took place over the summer. In the second round, which opened in September, almost 100 businesses applied for funding.
Sixteen finalists – eight STEM Class and eight Entrepreneur Class – gave public presentations before a panel of expert judges on December 18 and 19 at Delaware Tech in Dover, after which five winners in each category were chosen.
“Several companies that applied in the first round but were not successful in winning a grant took advantage of the opportunity to work with the Division’s business resource managers to strengthen their applications for this time around,” said Division Director Damian DeStefano. “That is what this program is about. The grant funding is incredibly important to those who win, but EDGE also provides a way for all applicants learn how to improve their businesses.”

How the white plywood box manufacturer’s domain work?
Plywood manufacturing is growing continuously and diversifying in the industry. Plywood is the sheets that are arranged alternately with the veins along and across the board. In such a way that the board is balanced and resists similarly in all directions. The layers are glued with phenolic resins under very high pressure and the outcome is a light material, very resistant and with its characteristic multilayer edge.
There are a variety of products in plywood such as wooden boxesdesigned for transporting, storing and collecting culture: books, films, and records. The white plywood box manufacturers make use of high quality wood and white ply to make the boxes.
Which wood is used to make the ply?
Plywood can be manufactured from hardwood, softwood or both of them. Softwood use for making plywood is Douglas which is a very popular one although pine, cedar, and redwood are quite common. Hardwood that is used for making plywood are ash, oak, mahogany, and maple. Composite plywood can also be used with solid timber and it is preferable when there is a requirement of thick sheets.
Additional materials like plastic, fabric, Formica, resin-impregnated paper or even metal can be added to the face and back veneers to improve the durability of plywood. These are added on the outer layer to prevent it from corrosion, abrasion and to resist moisture.
Types of plywood:
There are mainly four kinds of plywood:
Structural plywood: This can be used in permanent structures where high strength is required. It can be made from hardwood or softwood and used for flooring, bracing panels, beams, and formwork.
Internal plywood: This plywood has a superb finish and used for non-structural applications such as wall paneling, furniture, and ceilings.
External plywood: This plywood can be used on the exterior surfaces where aesthetic finishing or decoration is required. It cannot bear load or stress.
Marine plywood: This plywood is treated using the preservatives, varnish or paint to resist water damage and it is used in shipbuilding and to resist fungal attacks.
Today plywood has become the first choice of many builders and homeowners. Below are the benefits of plywood:
1. Plywood looks beautiful
Plywood looks so amazing if a good quality veneer is used, it looks just like a plank of real wood.
2. Plywood is strong
Plywood is quite strong and has great strength and it solves all the issues that occur in natural wood. The strength of the plywood is distributed evenly while the solid wood just tends to be stronger along the grain.
3. Plywood is lightweight
It is lighter than the solid wood and that makes plywood more perfect for making furniture. Heavier solid wood is difficult to carry when crafting furniture or when using it for other commercial applications. Wooden packaging boxes can also be made from plywood easily.
4. Plywood comes in large sizes
Standard plywood sheets come in large sizes with lengths of at least 1800mm and width at 1200mm, with this size one makes a lot of engineered wood products.
5. Plywood works great with curved surfaces
On making curved surfaces with a block of solid wood, the edges would probably be uneven or rough. Plywood is the best option to fit any curved surface smoothly and very easily.
6. Plywood offers more value for money
There is very little wastage when using plywood as every square inch of it is utilized. Because it is lightweight and transportation is also not an issue, so it is more value for money.
Tumblr media
7. Plywood is eco-friendly
Plywood is the most environmentally friendly product created by man. It uses wood but manufacturing plywood requires lesser wood than solid wood products. This means more timber is conserved and that makes plywood an eco-friendly product.
8. Chemical resistance
Plywood does not get corrode and can be used for chemical works as durable and cost-effective material.
An extremely versatile product that is used for a wide range of structural, interior and exterior applications. It can be tailored to match an extensive range of applications.

10 Secrets to Finding Quality Secondhand Furniture
Tumblr media
In the market for a chair or kitchen table? Instead of new, why not try new-to-you? Buying secondhand is one of the best ways to save big on furniture.
Thrift stores, online marketplaces and estate sales are loaded with well-built furniture that’s served families for generations. Finding the best pieces just takes a little patience, vision and practical advice.
Over the past 30 years, I’ve bought and sold hundreds of pieces of secondhand furniture and decorated my home with some of my most prized finds. Here are my secrets to finding quality used furniture.
What to look for
As with most things in life, separating the gems from the junk takes a discerning eye. From credenzas to club chairs, here’s what to look for.
1. Good bones
Whether you want a finished piece or a refurbishing project, look for furniture with good bones.
What does that mean? Drawers should slide easily, hinges should work and upholstered pieces should have sturdy, solid wood frames. Plastic or fiberglass items should be free of cracks, chips or obvious fading.
It’s easy to be tempted by beautiful old furniture that’s simply too far gone. Some shabby pieces will never be chic. Before you buy, ask yourself, “Do I have the skills to handle this project? How much of an investment in new tools and time will this require?”
2. Strong joints
A joint is the point where two pieces of material meet and connect. Creating a strong joint — one that will keep a drawer, chair or cabinet door intact for generations — requires a bit of expertise.
When considering a piece of wood furniture, examine how it’s put together. Look for the following types of joints:
Dovetail: Dovetail joints are used to connect the sides of a drawer to the drawer front. These strong joints feature trapezoid-shaped “tails” on one piece of wood that interlock with identically shaped cutouts on the other.
Mortise and tenon: This simple joint is made when a mortise (a hole or slot in one piece of wood) receives a tenon (a tab protrusion in another piece of wood). This joint is usually secured with glue or a small pin.
Finger: Finger joints are similar to dovetail joints. Each piece of wood has a series of interlocking shapes that fit snugly together to secure the joint.
Pocket-hole: This type of joint is made by butting one piece of wood against another and securing them with a screw. The screw hole is pre-cut at a 15-degree angle to create a tight bond and flush surface.
3. High-quality veneers
A veneer is a decorative covering applied to a less expensive material. In older furniture, veneers are usually thin layers of high-quality wood — think tiger maple or mahogany — laid over solid wood.
Since matching and applying replacement veneers is an art form all its own, look for furniture with intact veneer.
Also, keep an eye out for “bookmatched” veneers, a technique that involves aligning two sheets of veneer so that wood grain patterns mirror one another. Because of the time and skill involved, furniture with bookmatched veneers is especially desirable and increasingly hard to find.
4. Hotel cast-offs
When hotels renovate, they often donate their old furniture to local thrift shops or sell it to the public at deep discounts.
Commercial hotel furniture is some of the best furniture out there — easy to clean and built to take a beating. And since dozens of pieces are donated at the same time, find matching sets is a breeze.
Word of caution: Don’t take a chance on hotel mattresses. They’ve had a rough life and may harbor bedbugs and other ickiness.
5. Valuable vintage brands
Though flipping vintage furniture might not be your main goal, it never hurts to score a hot collectible.
Look for brands like:
Heywood-Wakefield
Knoll
Herman Miller
Lane (specifically, Lane’s Acclaim series)
Not only are these companies known for high design and craftsmanship, they’re also popular with collectors around the world.
6. Pieces that fit your lifestyle
Let’s face it: Furniture made generations ago was made for lifestyles that no longer exist. Huge armoires, hulking dining room tables, intricately carved china hutches — these pieces may be beautiful and well-crafted, but are they relevant for you?
Look for pieces that won’t cramp your contemporary lifestyle.
Before you buy, ask yourself: “Will this be difficult to care for? Will it take up too much space? Will it be hard to move? Does it have a single purpose, or can it be used in different ways as my needs change?”
What to avoid
Everyone knows to skip furniture with missing drawer pulls and broken legs. But let’s dig deeper. There are some things you should never buy used. In the hunt for the perfect piece, you should also avoid the following.
1. Bad smells
When it comes to bad smells, it’s not just upholstered pieces you have to worry about. Solid wood is surprisingly absorbent. Over time, odors from cigarette smoke, pets and mildew can slowly penetrate wood furniture, leaving pieces with a permanently “off” smell.
In the battle of bad smells, I’ve learned to make a hasty retreat. Trying to eliminate years’ worth of soaked-in odor can turn a fun weekend project into months of hard labor. Life’s too short. Give each piece of furniture a quick sniff test and avoid the stinkers.
2. Staples
Avoid furniture that’s constructed using industrial staples instead of screws, nails or one of the joinery methods mentioned earlier. Not only are these pieces mass-produced, they’re also mass-produced hastily and without regard for durability.
Staples can come loose easily, especially when used in particleboard. This type of furniture falls into a consumer category I cynically call “pre-landfill.” You don’t truly own pre-landfill items, you merely rent them for a short time until they fall apart.
3. Granite paint
Granite paint was an unfortunate trend in the early 1990s. This faux finish was liberally applied to lamps, dressers, end tables — nearly anything that was standing still. And because the paint had to be thick enough to produce a granite-like texture, it’s almost impossible to remove.
Unless you’re ready for a big restoration project involving chemical strippers and a lot of scraping and sanding, avoid any piece of furniture with this coating from hell.
4. Children’s furniture
While technically not something to avoid, buyers should exercise caution when shopping for secondhand children’s furniture.
Some pieces are donated after a manufacturer’s recall. Other pieces may have been broken and improperly repaired, resulting in a product that’s unsafe for youngsters.
Inspect each piece carefully while buying at a thrift store in Destin FL and after buying remember to properly anchor furniture that might pose a tipping hazard.

Waterproof Fabrics
By Kellie Rose
PUL, or polyurethane laminate
Laminated Cotton
Ripstop
Oil Cloth
ProCare
PUL, or polyurethane laminate
PUL is a bit of a special kind of waterproof fabric as it has the marvellous magic properties of being waterproof, but breathable. So why is this important? Well it’s very special because it means you can make waterproof items of clothing and cloth nappies and your body heat has a better chance of escaping in to the atmosphere through fabric so you sweat less! Brilliant.
Composition: PUL has 2 sides to it, one side is made from a polyester knit which means it has a slight stretch which is great for clothing as you get a bit of “give”, important when you’re moving around as there’s less chance of a seam giving way under stress. One side of the polyester knit has a laminate coating applied so it’s slippery and shiny; this is the waterproof layer. PUL is a soft flexible fabric which doesn’t really crease and it air dries in super quick time and  it doesn’t fray when cut. The PULs we stock contain no lead, phlalates or BPAs so are suitable for products intended for children under 12.
Right or wrong side? : I often get asked if there’s a right or wrong side to PUL and as far as the “waterproof-ness” goes there isn’t really, you can have either side as the right side and it will work just the same. That said, for aesthetic and comfort reasons the knit side is often used as the “right” side as it usually has a pretty pattern or colour and as the laminate side is shiny it’s probably more comfortable to have this away from the skin or it’d be a bit sticky. You can line your garment of course which will over come this, and cloth nappies usually have an inner fabric which is closest to the skin, or PUL is often used as a shaped wrap which goes around a fitted nappy which has no waterproof layer of it’s own. In pocket cloth nappies the shiny side is often used as the “right” side simply because it makes stuffing the nappy easier.
What is Sandwich PUL? As well as single layer PUL we also stock sandwich PUL which works in the same way but instead of being composed of 2 layers of fabric there are 3 layers. The layer of laminate is sandwiched in between 2 layers knit fabric. This is especially helpful if you don’t want to have the shiny laminate side against the skin as it’s hidden away between the knit layers. It’s also stronger so if you are applying a kind of fastener such as KAM snaps, extra reinforcement isn’t required around the fastenings.
Uses: Cloth nappies and wraps, anoraks, waterproof trousers, wet bags, swim bags, changing mats, changing bags, mattress protectors, pillow protectors, baby bibs, picnic blankets, incontinence products, anywhere you need a waterproof, breathable layer.
A special note regarding our own brand of white PUL … we get this manufactured ourselves here in the UK and it has some very special properties:
It is double laminated which means it lasts longer and is less likely to delaminate over time, especially helpful for high laundry items
It is weldable which means it welds to itself when very high heat (like an iron) is  applied (use a pressing cloth). This seals the seams making them completely waterproof
It’s fungistatic which (apart from being a brilliant word) means it inhibits the growth of fungi, very helpful when used in a  nappy, to line a wet bag  or on items such as bibs which may be left wet or damp for some time
Laminated Cotton
Laminated cotton isn’t  completely waterproof, but more water resistant so it’s probably not the best choice for a cloth nappy or for something like a wet bag. People lean towards laminated cotton when they’d like to have a natural fibre on one side of the laminated fabric, it’s also thinner and more pliable than PUL. Because it’s a natural fibre that’s BPA free it’s also considered safe to use for foody makes such as lunch bags and sandwich pouches.
Composition: Laminated cotton is another 2 layer fabric where a high quality 100% cotton sheeting has a film of laminate applied to the right side of the fabric. This fabric has much less of a stretch than PUL and is favoured when you’d like  a natural fibre as part of your garment rather than polyester. It doesn’t fray when cut. It’s PVC-free, and BPA-free and as such is often a fabric of choice when making items for under 12s or food related. It’s pretty and pliable with a nice hand and drapes well, making it ideal for garments and a plethora of other fabulous items.
Right or wrong side? : The laminate is applied to the right side of the fabric, this means that the wrong side is 100% cotton and so can be comfortably worn against the skin.
Uses: Laminated cotton has a lovely hand and is perfect for use in children’s wear, rain coats, bags, baby bibs, play mats, changing bags, place mats, table cloths, sandwich bags, lunch bags, craft aprons, purses, pencil cases.
Ripstop
Ripstop is the real rufty-tufty of waterproof fabrics that we stock. It’s a nylon threaded material that is pretty resistant to tearing or ripping. It’s so tough and strong it’s used a lot in camping equipment such as tents but it’s also used in things like hang glider wings and hot air balloons… not that I imagine you’ll be making your own hang glider any time soon but it shouldn’t be disregarded as it’s also useful for smaller scale applications around the home and is especially good for the garden and it’s much more economical to buy than some of the other waterproof fabrics. I use it as an under high chair cover to save my floor from toddler food accidents and I didn’t even hem it <gasp!>. Because it’s so durable it’s great for outdoor applications and would make great  covers for outdoor furniture or perhaps a BBQ. Bear in mind ripstop isn’t completely waterproof, it’s better than laminated cotton but if wet items are left sitting on it for a long period the wet will seep through. It’s for this reason  I think PUL or ProCare are a better choice for wet bags, but for short term wet applications like a swimming bag that just houses soggy togs for a few hours I think it’d be fine. It can be used in clothing but bear in mind it isn’t breathable.
Composition : Ripstop is made by weaving nylon threads together through a base material. It has an interlocking weave which gives it a distinct raised box pattern on the fabric and it’s because of this  weave that it’s difficult to tear. It’s not a breathable fabric and it doesn’t have any stretch. It doesn’t really fray when cut. It’s a bit noisier than some of the other fabrics in this genre and has that familiar rustle sound!
Right or wrong side? : the patterned side is the right side, this is for aesthetic rather than performance reasons.
Uses: Boot bags, wet bags (although I believe PUL or ProCare perform much better for this application), rain coats, waterproof trousers, ruck sacks, wash bags, pencil cases, kites, wind breaks, shower curtains, splash mats, table cloths, peg bags, tote bags, changing bags, outdoor bunting, outdoor furniture covering, nappy wallets.
Oil Cloth
Once upon a time oil cloth was actually a closely woven cotton cloth covered in boiled linseed oil to give it waterproof properties,  times have changed and things are a little less messy with today’s oil cloth.
Composition: Oil Cloth is a PVC product and is 100% vinyl and is completely waterproof. It’s very shiny, durable and quite thick so isn’t as pliable and easy to work with as some of the other fabrics in the category. It doesn’t fray when cut. As oil cloth contains phthalates it isn’t intended for projects for children under 12.
Right or wrong side? : the patterned side is the right side, this is for aesthetic rather than performance reasons.
Uses: Table cloths and protectors, bags, pencil cases, book covers, aprons, coin purses, place mats, floor mats, totes, drawer liners, place mats, garden caddies.
ProCare
ProCare  is a very durable totally waterproof barrier fabric. It’s more of a functional fabric than one that will add some pretty cheer to your makes but it does have a few special properties. It has a really high laundry tolerance, over 300+ washes the manufacturers claim. It’s also food safe making a great choice for lining a lunch bag or sandwich wrap. ProCare also meets duty, laundering and material safety standards for use in medical and institutional products. ProCare is not breathable.
Composition: ProCare is 25% polyester and 75% vinyl. It has no real stretch and does not shrink. It can be seam welded with an impulse sealer. It’s free of lead,  phthalates, BPS or brominates and is FDA GRAS compliant for contact with foods.
Right or wrong side? : One side has more texture than the other but both are quite similar. There is no functional difference when using either side of the fabric.
Uses: Wet bag linings, snack and lunch bags, mattress protection, baby bibs, furniture protection, pet and veterinary pads, changing mats

Eco-Friendly Vegan Leather: Everything You Need to Know
Hiya Gorgeous,
I was blown away by the response to one of my recent blog posts, What the Fast Fashion Industry Doesn’t Want You to Know. I know how passionate this community is about the environment, animals and other humans. But your overwhelming positivity, support and enthusiasm for this topic really knocked my socks off!
Your excitement also left me more determined than ever to band together to save our precious planet. When our individual contributions start to add up, we have the power to change the world.
Something else stood out to me about the fast fashion blog post: I got a lot of questions about my favorite ethical, sustainable and cruelty-free brands. Many of you wanted more specific eco-friendly shopping how-tos and tips. I’m thrilled to say that today’s post is the first in a series all about that—and we’re kicking it off with the ultimate guide to vegan leather!
What’s the problem with leather?
If you read my post about the fast fashion industry, then you’re already aware of some of the issues that come along with exploiting animals for their fur, skins, etc. Animal agriculture requires massive amounts of land, water, fuel and feed. This industry is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than all of the world’s transportation systems combined, and percent of the Amazon rainforest has been cleared to make way for pastures or for growing feed crops (source).
When it comes to leather specifically, the picture doesn’t get any better. The leather tanning process is often incredibly toxic. People who work in tanneries or live near them are exposed to harmful chemicals used to process, treat and dye animal skins. This often takes place in developing countries where child labor isn’t regulated, proper waste management systems aren’t in place, and workers aren’t well-protected or paid (source).
And our innocent animal friends endure horrific conditions. They’re often confined to overcrowded indoor spaces without access to sufficient food, water or fresh air. They suffer through painful procedures without anesthesia (like castration and branding) and face countless other forms of unimaginably cruel treatment (source).
We can do better. Animals, other people and the environment do NOT need to suffer for our wardrobes. That’s where eco-friendly vegan leather alternatives come in!
What is vegan leather?
Two vegan leather alternatives you may have heard of are PVC and PU. PVC is a petrochemical product that is heavily processed from start to finish. Many companies have moved away from using it because it requires fossil fuels to produce, contains toxic chemicals like Phalates (not safe for the environment or people!) and creates an enormous amount of waste (source). If you see PVC or its derivatives on a tag, you can bet it’s not a sustainable vegan leather alternative.
What is PU leather?
PU (polyurethane) is a popular vegan leather alternative. Many brands say it’s more eco-friendly than PVC, but do a little research and you’ll find a lot of mixed opinions. Some say that PU production results in just as many toxic emissions and waste as PVC, and that calling it sustainable is simply not true (source).
PU proponents, on the other hand, say that it’s a better option than animal exploitation and overall its environmental footprint is smaller than that of leather. My team and I did a lot of research on this since we know PU is widely used by the brands we’re sharing later in this article. There’s no easy or straightforward answer, but for the most part we agree that PU does less harm than leather.
A note on conscious consumption.
That brings me to an important reminder: Products of all kinds (purses, shoes, sheets, kitchen tools, you name it!) are only as sustainable, ethical and kind as the company they come from… no matter what they’re made of. Know the brands you buy from. Learn about the materials they use, their factory standards, how they treat their workers and how they manage waste. A purse made with PU from a brand with strong environmental and social practices is very different from a similar bag from a less conscious brand.
And here’s a hint: If a brand doesn’t provide clear, specific info about how they’re protecting people, animals and the environment, proceed with caution. Companies who prioritize this stuff speak up about it. Let’s demand more transparency!
Love the environment as much as I do? Get more sustainability tips and my free Starter Kit:
A peek into the future: more sustainable vegan leather alternatives!
Some brands are creating truly innovative vegan leather options out of organic and recycled materials. They’re more eco-friendly than the standard alternatives we discussed above, but are often more expensive, harder to find and not as broadly appealing (either because they don’t mimic the leather look and feel people want, or aren’t as high-end looking). But as the demand for sustainable vegan leather grows, I suspect we’ll see these options continue to improve and become more widely available.
Here are some of the coolest, most innovative materials that stood out to me:
Piñatex: Fruit is even more awesome and versatile than I thought—this incredible vegan leather is made from pineapples! It’s beautiful, watertight and durable. Plus, the company that manufactures it has some fantastic sustainability and social practices (learn more about them here). My fave cruelty-free watch brand, Votch, has an entire  collection of piñtatex watches.
MuSkin: This vegan leather is made from another one of my favorite plants—mushrooms! More specifically, it’s made out of the cap of a parasitic, inedible variety called Phellinus ellipsoideus (source). I don’t see a whole lot of MuSkin products available yet, but I bet that’ll change soon.
Apple peel leather: You read that right! An apple a day does more than just keep the doctor away. Companies like Veggani are using industrial apple peel waste to create environmentally friendly pieces like this gorgeous crossbody bag.
Recycled materials: Recycled rubber, recycled car tires, recycled plastic… oh my! Lots of companies are repurposing materials that would otherwise sit in landfills (or the ocean, rivers, forests, etc.) by creating shoes, bags, belts, etc. out of them. Rothy’s, for example, uses plastic water bottles to make their super cute (and machine washable!) shoes.
Get the ultimate guide to eco-friendly vegan leather alternatives—the best materials, top brands and more!
18 Eco-Friendly Vegan Leather Alternatives
There are so many wonderful companies out there dedicated to making fashion a kinder, more eco-conscious business, and I’m thrilled to highlight some of them today! This list is purely for your info and to support you on your eco-friendly journey—I’m not sponsored or getting paid to promote any of these brands.
Note: These brands use a variety of materials. There are plenty of options if you want to avoid PU!
GUNAS (maker of high-end purses, wallets and shoes) believes that just being vegan isn’t enough—they’re looking out for other humans and the environment, too. And here’s something that really sets them apart: They encourage conscious consumerism. So rather than pushing you to buy fast and often like so many of the brands we’re familiar with, they want you to take your time and make careful decisions. I love this more purposeful, minimalist approach!
Whatever the season or occasion, you’ll be able to find the perfect pair of vegan leather shoes from Bhava. I’m eyeing these strappy sandals—what color is your fave? Bhava also does a great job explaining some of the problems with leather and fast fashion, along with what they’re doing to change the face of footwear.
Svala helps protect animals in more ways than one. Not only is their line of purses and wallets cruelty-free, they also donate a portion of the profits to charities like WildAid, whose mission is to end the illegal wildlife trade. Svala also buys carbon offsets to reduce their environmental footprint and uses recycled plastic bottles to line their bags—yay!
Rafa makes beautiful, hand-crafted vegan shoes in Los Angeles, California. While they keep a few things in stock, most items are made to order. This allows the Rafa team to dedicate time and quality craftsmanship to each unique pair. Check out this short and sweet video about how (and why!) they do what they do.
This is a trend I didn’t think I’d see again—fanny packs! HFS Collective’s belt bags are designed to “free you from your baggage.” That means more hands to pet every pup you meet, carry green drinks and do other stuff you love.
I mentioned Rothy’s in last year’s eco-friendly holiday gift guide, and this is still one of my fave brands for comfy shoes that can be dressed up or down. Their pointed toe flats are the perfect versatile basic. The uppers are made of 100 percent post-consumer water bottles, and the other parts of the shoe are made of a mix of recycled, non-toxic, vegan materials. Even their shoe boxes are biodegradable!
A pair of easy-to-wear slides is a must-have for the warmer months of the year, and Indosole has totally nailed an eco-friendly option. Not only do they come in some great colors, they also give a second life to a pervasive waste product—car tires!
Noani (meaning No Animal—yes!) has vegan leather belts for everyone in your life. They use innovative eco-friendly materials like eucalyptus and apple fibers. Plus, they’re committed to maintaining safe, fair working conditions for everyone involved in creating their products.
I love how transparent VEERAH is about the materials they use to make their luxury, sustainable, vegan shoes (check out a detailed list here!). Plus, can we talk about these gorg bright blue pumps made from apple leather? Anyone who thinks eco-friendly and fashionable don’t belong in the same sentence should get a load of those!
MooShoes is a vegan leather lover’s dream. Unlike the other brands on this list, this store is a hub where you can get goodies from a variety of cruelty-free brands. Their NYC location was the first cruelty-free retail store of its kind when it opened back in 2001 and they’ve since expanded to LA. But no worries if you’re not close to either of those locations—the website is easy to use and jam-packed with shoes, bags and more that’ll satisfy all style sensibilities.
I think that Angela Roi makes some of the most beautiful cruelty-free purses out there. That said, I’d love to see them expand the info available on their site about their sustainability practices and working conditions. Transparency is where it’s at, folks!
Looking for some comfy kicks for walking the dog, running to the store and everything in between? You’ll love Native Shoes, which are cruelty-free AND easy on the planet. In fact, Native has committed to making all of their products 100 percent lifecycle managed by 2023 (learn more about what that means here).
This circular purse from Hozen is so cute! And there’s a lot more than meets the eye here—Hozen donates 10 percent of their profits to Mercy for Animals (one of my favorite orgs!) and makes their products in small batches to avoid wasteful excess stock.
Nae (stands for No Animal Exploitation—so good!) has something for everyone. These desert boots are a great wardrobe staple. And who doesn’t need a simple, everyday black belt?
One of the wardrobe essentials I’ve had trouble finding in cruelty-free form is a vegan leather moto jacket! Then I came across this piñatex stunner from Altiir. It’s certainly not cheap, but could be a worthwhile investment if you wear it a lot and keep for years to come.
Labante London makes gorgeous purses, wallets and other accessories out of recycled materials. According to their website, they’ve already saved 10 million plastic bottles from languishing in landfills! I’m a big fan of this functional, timeless wallet.
Beyond Skin has a wide range of sandals, boots, heels, flats and more available in a variety of fun prints and fabrics. They’re also really upfront about their business and sustainability practices, which means you can buy with confidence. And how about these must-have mustard sandals? Love!
Have a favorite sustainable, cruelty-free brand I didn’t mention? Shout them out in the comments below!
I want to hear from you!

The Surprising Truth on How Often You Should Wash Your Sheets
Everyone knows the extraordinary feeling of sleeping on freshly cleaned sheets – there is nothing quite like it! Washing and cleaning bed sheets is an important thing to do regularly and even though it leaves people feeling good after they clean their sheets, many people are not consistent with washing their sheets on a regular basis. It may be surprising to learn that the average person changes their sheets roughly every 24 days – according to a survey of 1,000 Americans. The longer you go without washing your sheets you leave your bed open and vulnerable to dust mites, dead skin accumulation, dirt, and eventually odors.
Dust mites are a commonly found allergen in bed linens that are so small that they are not visible to the human eye. These critters are attracted to your bed sheets as they thrive on dead skin which has collected within your linens. The average human sheds 1.5 grams of skin a day – which can feed nearly 1 million dust mites. Therefore, cleaning your sheets regularly is important to removing dust mites and fighting off other odor-causing allergen/debris.
How Often Should I Wash My Sheets
The reality is that most people do not wash their sheets enough. As we mentioned the average American washes their sheets every 24 days, but is that often enough? According to a report by CNN, ideally you should be washing your sheets once a week in a hot water cycle to properly clean and disinfect your sheets. Also, you must take into consideration the different circumstances that could affect the condition of your sheets such as if you sweat at night or if you have a pet that lays on your bed with you.
Another consideration you must take into account is if you are sick or recovering from an illness – if it is something contagious you will want to strip the sheets and wash them in hot water to kill any bacteria or germs that have accumulated in your sheets. If your washing machine has a sanitize option, you will want to select that option for cleaning your sheets after becoming sick.
Washing your sheets every week can also be helpful for those who suffer from allergies. As we discussed earlier, dust mites are a commonly found allergen inside bed linens, and they can wreak havoc on your allergies. That is why the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America recommends you wash your bedding at least once a week to eliminate the potential allergen source that is gathering inside your bed sheets.
How Often Should You Wash Your Comforter
Do you sleep with your bulky comforter or duvet every night? If you do, this may mean that you need to ramp up your washing of these bulkier items. The typical rule of thumb is that you should wash these items 2 to 3 times per year. However, if you frequently use this item than you will want to increase the number of washes you perform on this linen.
Also, if your comforter is not covered and is the linen most exposed when your bed is made this will mean you will need to regularly wash your comforter along with your bed sheets. You may have to perform multiple washes in order to wash both your comforter and bed sheets – and it is suggested to wash your comforter in its own washing cycle.
How Often Should You Buy New Sheets
The sheets that you sleep on every night can become worn or ragged overtime when it undergoes more and more washes. This can leave your sheets in need of replacement sooner than you may have expected. However, sometimes, if you take really good care of your sheets, they can last your for forever! Although it may sound like a good economical decision to keep your old sheets, the quality of your sheets can wear and leave you needing to swap out these sheets for some new replacements. It is recommended that you replace your bed sheets ever 2 to 3 years.
Should You Wash New Sheets
When you purchase new bed sheets a big question that many people have is whether or not you need to or should wash these sheets. Some new linen packaging will indicate if you should wash the sheets before use, while others may not. But regardless, with any new sheets it is a good idea to wash them in hot water before you use them. This is mainly due to the fact that chemical treatments may be used on these items during the manufacturing process – and to properly remove these chemicals you will need to wash the sheets with detergent and a laundry chemical remover additive.
