We are quite excited to host chef, restauranteur,
author, and activist, Meeru Dhalwala, who will share her compelling story of creativity through the lens of June’s global theme ‘reverie’.
Register
Meeru moved from Washington, D.C. to Vancouver in February 1995 and has since been cooking and running the kitchens and menus at Vij’s and Rangoli restaurants. Vij’s has been hailed by the New York Times as “easily among the finest Indian restaurants in the world.” (Rangoli closed after 17 years in May 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic). Meeru also wrote all three award-winning Vij’s cookbooks.
In 2021, Meeru created a small community business built from her learned ethics in the food industry: My Bambiri (baby) Foods. My Bambiri sources from BC organic farmers and sells on income-based pricing: three price options based on a family’s specific finances. She has also partnered with Food Stash Foundation to sell My Bambiri at their markets for low-income families who face many economic and social barriers. In October 2022, Meeru relaunched her annual international food fair called “Joy of Feeding” that is held at the UBC Farm Centre for Sustainable Food Systems.
Meeru holds a MSc in development studies from Bath University, UK, and brings her passion for humanity into her business and cooking practices. She is one of Vancouver’s most prominent promoters of women in business, climate change and sustainability, and healthy-elegant cooking. She proudly sits on the Board of Directors for the Green Party of Vancouver. For her professional and community work, Meeru has received honorary doctorates from both University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University.
Every month we like to ask our speakers a handful of probing questions to give us a deeper glimpse into their life and relationship with creativity:
How do you define creativity and apply it in your life and career? I imagine and then come up with ideas. Lots of ideas, of which most aren’t realistic, but contribute to the final ideas that I/we can execute. I love the process of ideas popping or slowly coming to form in my head. I love the crazy ideas that are impractical and the ideas that could make stories if I were a novelist. I say the word “IDEA!” in the Vij’s kitchen and staff stops whatever we’re doing, get excited and hear the “IDEA!” Half of them result in all of us just laughing b/c while even saying it, I realize it’s not practical or just sounds silly coming out. My kitchen staff doesn’t rely on me to run the daily kitchen—cooking, ordering, loading, prep, etc.—but they rely on me for my “IDEA!” And if I love my idea, I don’t let it go.
Where do you find your best creative inspiration or energy? From running in my neighborhood—not any neighborhood or trail. Running is combination of my familiar surroundings and my body igniting me—my brain is dancing while my body is doing all the physical work. Whatever is on my mind—whether my family, trying to save some aspect of the environment, imagining being dead, imagining my comfort place on this earth, a work issue, coming up with recipes, etc.—it’s done with abandon while I’m running. Within 10 minutes, I lose myself in imagining, pondering…and daydreaming about my past in relation to today.
What’s one piece of creative advice or a tip you wish you’d known as a young person? Find a solo activity during which you feel abandon and…yes, lose yourself in reverie! I run. All those times when I was crying or stressed about my home life or school life, if I had gone out running and released that stress energy, the weight would have lightened and so many windows would have opened. Doesn’t have to be a physical activity—it can be knitting or drawing.
Who (living or dead) would you most enjoy hearing speak at CreativeMornings? George Eliot or Graca Machel. Intellectually attuned and gracefully passionate, brave women. Middlemarch is still relevant as a compelling storyline and observation on humanity’s social concoctions. Women and children’s rights activist Graca Machel was the First Lady of Mozambique at an important and crucial time. Her husband (the President) was assassinated via a plane crash. Later, she became the First Lady of South Africa, as wife of Nelson Mandela.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done? Fly to Vancouver from Washington D.C. to meet a guy I was talking on the phone with for a month (back in 1994) and, after spending 5 days with him, deciding to marry him asap. I left my hometown, friends and career in human rights and economic development to move to Vancouver. It resulted in a new and completed unexpected career, two beautiful children and 17 years of marriage. I don’t know how, but I grabbed the confidence in love before it escaped in the form of common sense.
If you could open a door and go anywhere, where would that be? My partner is a dry suit (meaning he dives in cold waters) scuba diver and travels to all waters of the world to dive, take photos. His “comfort place” in this world is the silence and being solo under water—complete opposite from mine. He lies there with his camera, watches and waits for creatures to swim, fully in zen mode. This level of silence and alone-ness intimidates and fascinates me. I would LOVE to turn myself into an invisible and weightless being, and be on his shoulder while he does this. I would not want to disturb his zen. For me, this would be like magically living in a dream.
What are you proudest of in your life? Giving motherhood my all, by which I don’t mean just love. The most important moment of my life so far is when I first looked down at my newborn and felt/saw the look in her wide eyes, settling on her mom’s face. I call this “Newborn Eyes”. Newborn Eyes are the energy of my personal life. I’m proud of fully and honestly engaging with my two daughters as humans and not as my extensions. I’m proud of calling them out on their shit and not worrying if they like me or not, or if they’ll rebel. I’m proud that I never stopped being me for the sake of being a mother.
If you could do anything now, what would you do? Have each human above the age of, say 6, in this world watch the animated documentary film “Flee” for its subject matter and b/c its engrossing storytelling. I want all of us watching at the exact same time so we are aware of sharing this experience together, as one. So, a bit of magic or super sci-fi high tech required here. Some of the bravest and most loving people in this world are “refugees” and “migrants”. These are labels for some, but for me they are my mom and dad.
What books made a difference in your life and why? The Employees by Olga Ravn. This book is potentially our real future with real humans co-existing with AI types of humans. It’s beautifully written. It’s a very short book and I read it twice in a row.

Speakeasies in Vancouver
Bagheera
Nightlife in Vancouver can be great as mentioned in other blogs, we have clubs with all types of music. We have festivals around the city and also nighttime events. However, there's something I feel that is not talked about enough!  And that is speakeasies. I have always had this peculiar interest in knowing about them. When I heard of bagheera and all the attention that was causing, it immediately sparked my curiosity.
All the things I was hearing about that place were about the nice cocktails, the good vibes and the music. At the beginning I thought: “oh great, another vancouver restaurant”, however, I caught me by surprise when I noticed that all the reviews and videos were talking about a speakeasy. At first I couldn’t believe it, it would be my first opportunity to visit one of these special places here in Vancouver.
I found lots of videos talking about bagheera and the whole experience. Located in the heart of Chinatown and focused mainly on offering a unique experience with food and drinks based on Indian cuisine. It has the outside appearance of any other shop around there. Even though it has what I would consider a “sketchy” entry, the inside is completely worth it. As you walk in the first thing you see is a betting booth for horse racing. They greet you and ask you if you would like to bet on any of the horses. Here’s the trick to make it inside, you have to place a bet on ‘king Louis’. After a couple minutes your server comes out and takes you inside and seats you. As simple as that, you are in on one of the coolest speakeasies Vancouver has to offer. From fancy cocktails to delicious appetizers. Bagheera is definitely the place to go if you want to experience something new.
Tumblr media
The stockroom
This second speakeasy is located I would say in a better part of town, specifically talking about Yaletown. With a different vibe than the other one, but still remarkable enough to create a big fuss around town. This speakeasy has a different type of vibe, hiding behind a burger shop is the famous Stockroom. Honoring its name, the entrance of this place looks as if you were going to the backroom of the burger shop. They have a partnership with Hundy burgers, which means that the cover up it’s completely functional.
You can start the night and have fun having a really nice and good burger. This one in particular doesn't have a password in particular. It's more of a walk-in type of speakeasy. However, if you don’t  know what goes behind those doors then you might get fooled and think it's a regular burger shop. It happened to me before, where I walked many times around this place and thought it's just a regular burger place. The vibe inside the stockroom is a bit different, the music is cool and the best part is the different amount of cocktails they have, with a variety of prices ranging between 8 to 20 dollars per beverage.
To access this fun speakeasy you just need to go through the right side of the burger bar, there is a hallway that remarks the entrance of a back room, however if you push through that door you will find the amazing Stockroom. I would definitely say that this speakeasy is fun and a good combination between a place to eat with a good place to have some drinks afterwards, definitely a must.
Tumblr media
Arcana spirit lounge
This speakeasy is what I would consider out of this world. It is located in one of the most interesting streets to shop for all sorts of cool and vintage stuff. I am talking about Gastown. You can clearly see from the cover up that it is going to be a different experience. I believe that the exact words I would use to describe this speakeasy are spooky and fun. Hiding behind the doors and a sign outside that displays ‘Pet Psychic’, anyone would think it is a modern yet funny place where you can get a personal reading of the tarot cards accompanied by pets.
However, this can not be far from what it really hides. A mysterious vibe is what I would say to describe Arcana. It is definitely for the spooky lovers. It has lots of references for horror movies and the cocktails they serve are inspired by that. They also serve food. I would say that people who enjoy spooky and all the witchcraft vibes would love this place. I would consider Arcana a must visit on special days like Halloween.
They also serve food which is a point in their favor. I also believe the prices to be very high compared to the other two speakeasies it ranges between 17-25 in beverages and 20 and up for sliders and main courses, however, I feel that you are paying for the experience more than the food or drinks itself, without taking any recognition of their quality and presentation, which is something to consider remarkable and unforgettable. If you want to get spooked and have a great time then Arcana is the place for you.

Planning Your Journey from Vancouver to India: Delhi, Mumbai, and Amritsar
When planning a trip from Vancouver to India, choosing between Delhi, Mumbai, and Amritsar can be exciting yet challenging. Each destination offers a unique experience, with vibrant cultures, historic landmarks, and delicious cuisine that make India a world-renowned travel destination. Whether you're looking for flights to Delhi, Mumbai, or Amritsar, here’s a guide on what to expect, along with tips for booking flights, planning your itinerary, and making the most of your journey from Vancouver to India.
Finding the Right Flight to India
Flights from Vancouver to India are quite popular, as India is a favored destination for travelers interested in history, culture, and spirituality. Flights to Delhi, Mumbai, and Amritsar operate regularly, giving travelers multiple options for direct and connecting flights. Air Canada, British Airways, Emirates, and Qatar Airways are some of the top airlines that offer frequent flights from Vancouver, each with varying stopovers in major cities like London, Doha, and Dubai.
When booking flights from Vancouver to India, start by comparing prices across these airlines and travel dates. Typically, flights to Delhi are more frequent and may be slightly more affordable than flights to Mumbai or Amritsar due to Delhi’s popularity as a major entry point into India. However, for those looking to visit specific regions, flying directly to cities like Mumbai or Amritsar may offer a more convenient option. To get the best prices, book your flights well in advance and consider setting up fare alerts to monitor price drops.
Vancouver to Delhi: The Gateway to Northern India
Delhi, India’s capital city, is often considered the heart of the nation’s history and culture.  Flights from Vancouver to Delhi typically take around 17 to 20 hours with one stopover, depending on your chosen airline and route. Delhi is the perfect starting point for exploring North India, as it connects easily to destinations like Jaipur, Agra, and the Himalayan regions.
Once you’ve arrived in Delhi, prepare for a sensory journey through bustling markets, awe-inspiring monuments like the Red Fort, and spiritual sites such as the Lotus Temple. For a dose of history, the Old City offers a mix of Mughal-era architecture, while New Delhi boasts lush avenues and modern landmarks. Flights from Vancouver to Delhi are often direct or have one stopover, making it a straightforward journey for travelers.
Vancouver to Mumbai: Experiencing India’s Entertainment and Business Hub
Mumbai, often called the “City of Dreams,” is the country’s financial and entertainment capital. Flights from Vancouver to Mumbai typically involve one or two stopovers, taking anywhere from 18 to 22 hours. Mumbai’s skyline, dotted with towering buildings and historic structures, sets it apart from other Indian cities. For travelers interested in Bollywood, finance, and a fast-paced urban experience, Mumbai is an ideal destination.
After landing in Mumbai, explore the Gateway of India, the iconic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, and the vibrant beaches of Juhu and Marine Drive. The city is also known for its diverse street food scene, so don’t miss out on trying Vada Pav, Pav Bhaji, and local chaat. Although Vancouver to Mumbai flights are slightly longer than those to Delhi, the city's energy and culture are well worth the journey.
Vancouver to Amritsar: Diving into Sikh Culture and History
For those drawn to the spiritual and cultural richness of Punjab, Amritsar offers an unparalleled experience. Flights from Vancouver to Amritsar often involve at least one or two layovers, making the journey around 20 to 24 hours. Amritsar is the spiritual center of Sikhism and home to the Golden Temple, a stunning gold-covered sanctuary visited by millions of pilgrims and tourists each year.
Beyond the Golden Temple, Amritsar provides a close-up look at Punjabi culture through its folk music, dance, and cuisine. The Wagah Border, located just a short drive away, is another must-visit site where you can witness the daily ceremonial border closing between India and Pakistan. Flights to Amritsar may require a bit more planning, but the city’s spiritual ambiance and welcoming atmosphere make the journey worthwhile.
Travel Tips for a Comfortable Journey
When booking your flights, consider these tips to make your journey from Vancouver to India as smooth as possible:
Plan Layovers Wisely: If you prefer shorter layovers, prioritize airlines like Air Canada and British Airways, which often have faster connections.
Choose Direct Flights Where Possible: While not as common, direct flights to Delhi can save time and energy, especially if you're traveling with family or have a tight schedule.
Travel Light: Packing efficiently can make transiting through airports easier. Carry essentials in a small bag, including travel-sized toiletries, snacks, and a change of clothes.
Stay Hydrated and Move Often: Long flights can be tiring, so drink plenty of water, and take short walks up and down the aisle to stay comfortable.
Research Local Customs: Learning a bit about each destination’s cultural norms can enhance your experience and help you connect with locals more easily.
Whether you’re exploring the historic sites of Delhi, enjoying Mumbai’s cosmopolitan flair, or experiencing Amritsar’s spirituality, each city offers something uniquely Indian. By planning ahead and choosing the right flight options, you’re sure to have a memorable and rewFlights to Amritsar
arding journey from Vancouver to India.

The Pits and Rocks of Silver Star Mountain
Many people wandering the Olympic and Cascade mountains have come across mysterious pits or piles of rocks. Probably the best-known system is on the ridge south of Silver Star Mountain, in southern Washington. Archaeologists have mapped and counted at least twenty-six pits, trenches, and rock piles here.
Pioneers called the Silver Star Pits the "rifle pits" in memory of a group of soldiers traveling from the Vancouver Barracks to Fort Simcoe, in eastern Washington. Native Americans ambushed the soldiers as they crossed the Silver Star Mountain, and, the story goes, the soldiers dug several pits and built low rock walls to protect themselves from the attacking Indians. After a day or two, the soldiers slipped away and returned to the Vancouver Barracks. However, a look at the pits makes it clear that it would have taken longer than one day for the soldiers to make them. This doesn't mean people didn't take cover in the holes and trenches, but they probably didn't build them.
Other pioneers told stories of Native Americans using the pits as hunting blinds. They would wait in the pits near the top of the ridge, while other members of their group went through the bottom of the deep valley, driving game uphill toward the hidden hunters. When a Native American elder was shown a picture of one of the pits, he looked at the archaeologist with pity (at his ignorance) and said, "Oh, that's a refrigerator pit."
The elder explained that while hunting, and gathering, the people had to store their food somewhere. They excavated holes in the loose rocks, lined them with leaves, put in the food to be stored, and covered the pits with more rocks. This insulted the food and kept out small scavengers.
However, this doesn't explain all of the pits at Silver Star and elsewhere. Perhaps the answer to the mystery lies in the fact that many people consider mountains and other high places sacred, perhaps because of their isolation. It is likely that many of the pits were dug and rocks were piled as rituals for a vision question: part of the spiritual life of Indian youths. Boys approaching manhood would go into the mountains or other sacred places where the spirits were close. Their aim was to see visions of the past or future, and find a spirit guide who would give them power for the rest of their lvies.
The youths would not eat or drink, and stayed awake day and night without a blanket. The boys would engage in heavy physical work to weaken their bodies in order that the spirits would show themselves. They would gather rocks and pile them into walls or mounds, until exhaustion brought on the visions.
In 1992, Weird Washington's Jeff Davis worked for the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. He hiked up to Silver Star Mountain several times and tells this story.
The Pits are located about a half mile past the highest point on the ridge. On one visit, I was mapping out the pits, expecting my boss to arrive and help. It was a windy day, and I had trouble with my measuring tape. Several times I heard my boss's voice. It was only a few words, or a phrase, and then silence. But each time I looked up, no one was there.
I finished my work and left. I found out later that my boss was at the top of Silver Star Mountain, a half mile away, with a film crew. They spent several hours walking over the peak. The only explanation we had was that the wind carried my boss's voice a half mile across the peak to the pits.

6 Reasons Canada Should be at the Top of Your Travel List
Is this the year you plan to witness the majesty of Niagara Falls, or hike through the rugged beauty of the Canadian Rockies? Will it be the year you taste maple syrup fresh from the source, or experience the thrill of watching a whale off the coast? If you are considering a visit to Canada, the answer might be, “Yes!”
To ignite your sense of adventure, here are some compelling reasons why Canada should be at the top of your travel list. On top of that, this blog adds a guide on how to prepare for a Canada trip, including visa and entry requirements, travel insurance for Canada, and so on.
6 Reasons that Make Canada a Great Tourist Destination for Indians
Canada is a popular travel destination due to its comfortable surroundings, colder climate, and the presence of vibrant Indian communities, making it an ideal choice for Indian travellers. Here are some of the reasons why Canada can let you have a great time.
Tumblr media
Adventure sports
Canada is famous for its majestic mountain ranges, rivers, tranquil lakes, and far-reaching forests. Due to its topographical advantages, Canada offers various kinds of adventure sports. Some of them are:
CN Tower EdgeWalk in Toronto
Exploring the West Coast shoreline on Vancouver Island
Swimming with Whales in Newfoundland
Visiting Quebec's Ice Hotel
Cycling through Icefields Parkway in Alberta
Kiteboard at Prince Edward Island
Tidal Bore Surfing in the Bay of Fundy
Experience Wonderland's Leviathan in Toronto
Bungee Jumping in Nanaimo
National Parks
Canada's vast and stunning geography provides endless adventures. It consists of 37 national parks and 10 national park reserves, representing 31 of the country's 39 terrestrial natural regions. These protected areas showcase Canada's ecological diversity, preserving iconic landscapes across its vast and varied terrain.
From glaciers to towering peaks, the national parks of Canada are a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. Some of the best national parks in Canada are Banff National Park, Jasper National Park, Yoho National Park, Waterton Lakes National Park etc.
Wildlife in Canada
Canada boasts a rich biodiversity of above 80,000 classified species, and scientists believe there are many more that await discovery. From iconic species like bears and moose to lesser-known plants and insects, Canada's wildlife reflects vast landscapes and varied ecosystems.
Due to its cold weather and natural beauty, the wildlife in Canada is as exciting as ever. You can spot snow leopards or any of your favourite animals in the snow-capped mountains during your visit.
Seasons to Enjoy
Canada's weather varies depending on the region, so it is not always hot or cold. In general, the weather is pleasant for most parts of the country. During the colder months, you might experience snowfall, especially in certain regions. If you're interested in experiencing a white Christmas, planning your trip around Christmas time is ideal.
The festive season in Canada is marked by beautiful decorations, sales, and shopping sprees, creating a joyful atmosphere. Fall is especially stunning, with trees changing colours, making it a picturesque time to visit.
Friendly people
Being a mixture of British, French and American influences, Canadian culture embraces diversity and multiculturalism. Naturally, Canadians are friendly and welcoming in the broadest sense. They are accommodating and polite, which fosters positive experiences for Indian travellers in Canada.
Besides, Canada’s diversity fosters a rich tapestry of cultures, offering various places of worship, cuisine, and communal spaces. Therefore, you can explore all the best parts of Canada and experience the warm hospitality of Canadians everywhere.
Culinary Delights
When travelling from India to Canada, you can rest assured that you will find a variety of Indian food options to enjoy. Canada offers a wide range of vegetarian, non-vegetarian, and vegan dishes.
You will be delighted to discover numerous street food vendors and high-end dining establishments nationwide. Some popular Canadian street foods include Halifax Donair, poutine and hot dogs.
Final Words
Opting for travel insurance for Canada is wise, as healthcare is not free for Indians. While Canada has an excellent healthcare system for residents, tourists may face hefty bills without insurance. So, opting for travel insurance online can come in handy. Moreover, for activities like scuba diving, skiing, and others mentioned in the adventure sports listed above, additional coverage is often necessary.
