Chai Love You
Kate Bridgerton still had little desire for Anthony to splash around his money on expensive gifts, despite her change in title. She appreciated living comfortably, sure, she would not deny that, but spending the family fortune on lavish clothes and hats was not something that brought her a great deal of joy.
Of course, to every rule there is an exception. They had barely stepped off the boat in Bombay, but Anthony could already see how Kate was settled in a way she never was in England. More than anything else, the flavours of this city and country were refueling Kate’s soul. Anthony tried to appreciate them, but his English palate recoiled from the amount of chili.
Anthony, like any respectable doting husband, insisted on shipping whatever spices Kate desired back to England. Unlike most gifts proffered by her husband, Kate welcomed this one most happily.
Now here Kate stands, one week past her honeymoon, as the only Bridgerton who knows how to turn on a stove, making herself chai long after everyone else has gone to bed.
“What are you doing?” Anthony asks softly, leaning against the doorframe to the kitchen.
“Oh,” Kate turns, slightly startled, “I didn’t mean to wake you when I got up. I’m making a pot of chai,” she looks back to the stove, lightly stirring the mixture of milk and spices.
“I’m most impressed you know how to,” he replies amusedly, pressing himself off the wall.
“You’re impressed I know how to make a drink native to my culture?” she raises an eyebrow.
“No, of course not,” he rushes to clarify, “that you know how to use the,” he spares a look combining embarrassment and disdain, “stove.”
“You cannot be serious,” she snorts unbecomingly, falling into uncontrollable laughter that is much too loud given the hour of night.
“Did the cook not make chai this afternoon?” Anthony huffs, resting against the table in the centre of the room.
“She did…” Kate says slowly.
“What is it, Viscountess? Lady of the household?”
“Evidently my written instructions were not clear enough. The chai the cook made was, for lack of a better descriptor, inadequate.”
“Would you like to hire a second cook? One who specialises in Indian cuisine?”
“That’s most thoughtful of you to offer,” Kate smiles, placing a terracotta cover over the flame once her chai finishes brewing. “If a household this large has always had only one cook, then I shall not change that. I will just have to teach the cook of my culture’s food.”
“And you will do a most excellent job, of that I am certain,” Anthony grins proudly.
“I will do my best, to teach a cook how to cook,” she hums bemusedly.
“Is your chai adequate, my love?” he asks fondly, watching each delicate movement of the cup to her lips.
“It is perfect,” she sighs happily, unsure how she went without it for so long during the last London season. The two months since they had left India was long enough.
“I shall see to it that we always have the ingredients you require on hand,” Anthony promises, bringing her empty hand to his lips.
“If the Bridgerton fortune is to go to a collection of spices you cannot pronounce, I will ensure it does not go to waste. I shall see to it that you learn to love chai.”

QUEEN !
This is dedicated to a person who worked as a mirror for me .
A normal girl born and brought up in a simple and humble sub-urbs of Delhi , India . Just like any other girl of her age who grew up in the similar simulation. yes I said simulation and not situation because this entire atmosphere in which she and a lot of other girls grew up was a carefully curated environment developed over centuries which was designed to be a death-well for any women who dares to dream.
Her name is Rani , meaning Queen . But ironically she does not even have the courage to take any decisions for herself and was raised to believe that that's how things should be . God bless her !
So she grew up being the perfect girl , sweeter than the sweets that her dad sells in his bakery . Oblivious of her beauty and talent . One day she meets her dad's best friend's family and their son , who is enticed by her beauty and grace and immediately falls in love with her . He tries his best to get her to like him and eventually he succeeds . And they decide to get married . Two days before the marriage the dude calls her up and says that he doesn't want her anymore . She is heartbroken . Tries to convince him but fails . I don't know if anyone knows this but in an Indian household , if a marriage is cancelled 2 days prior to the set date .. you are FUCKED!! That is the best and the most effective way to flip off an entire family and the shame will linger on in the form of rumors through out generations .
So with teary eyes , shattered soul and a non-existent sense of self, our dear Rani hid herself inside her room which was her cocoon , Oh ! if those walls could talk they would have sung about the dreams and aspirations that she sacrificed to bring "honor" to her family .
After taking her time to process the massive trauma that she had to go through , she decides to go on her dream Honeymoon trip all alone . She had planned for this , saved up for this since her teenage years . She decided to go on her own . Mind you, she had never crossed a road on her own . So she was in for an adventure of her life-time .
She goes to Paris , the most romantic city in the world. She dreamt of going to this place with her husband . But she was there all alone , looking at the Eiffel Tower all alone , couples kissing and snuggling all around her . She was tormented by memories of her ex but still she stormed through . She made unconventional friends with big hearts . A strikingly gorgeous and charming vijaylekshmi who helped her get out of her break-up blues . Vijayalekshmi has casual sex , is a mother to a lovely son and has no husband . Basically , an alien creature for Rani . But she saves her from a cop and later on helps her navigate her raw emotions .Now comes one of my most favorite scene in the entire movie . Rani goes to a disco club and she gets drunk accidentally and she starts ranting and she rants to everyone and anyone about India , how beautiful it is , Her battameez boyfriend who ditched her 2 days before marriage ,she was a very obedient child but still this happened to me ,she is always alone , had to even fight bullies alone, her uncle who died because of cancer even though he was a tea-totaler , vijayalakshmi's unholy ways , how she has finally succumbed to alcohol. The 5 stages of grief all in a relatable montage . And Vijayalakshmi consoling her.
Tumblr media
There is a scene in the club where she dances with rage as she remembers a day when her boyfriend scolds her for "dancing with other girls" in a public event . She lets her hair loose and literally does the dramatic version of shake-it-off which was so beautifully captured that it was just evident in her eyes that she was questioning and stating "Look at the things I did for you but why did you still leave me ..well fuck you I'll dance like a true Queen" . Then she re-discovers her fashion sense as she transforms from the naive Indian girl to a self-aware one. Simple but powerful message .
Now the second part of her honeymoon, Amsterdam , She bids farewell to Vijayalekshmi who now wears Rani's signature blue kurthi and has a rediscovered the bond to her roots in India . A hug and a Thumkha later she enters the train to amsterdam .
She enters Amsterdam and goes to the hostel that Vijayalekshmi booked for her and discovers that she has to share the room with 3 men. Well...Shook to her core she rushes downstairs and demands for another room but in vain. She returns to her roommates and tries to sleep in the room but can't do it so eventually sleeps outside and dreams about the ex that broke her heart and her family .She was gentky woken up by her room-mate who told her to sleep inside and then the rest of the guys slept outside even though they clearly didn't want to.
This part of the movie deeply touches a silent truth that is known to all in India . Men and women are grown in a such a way that a single touch or contact with the other gender is seen as a "bad signal" . Hugging a man ... eww... if its not my husband then no.. The label of being a man /women is given so much power that they forgot to teach us that You are Human first ..Gender comes second.
Rani eventually comes to understand this . She sees beyond the carefully knitted veil of misogynistic inhumane lies and she starts to value the friendship and company of these 3 men . Empathises with them and makes memories with them . They in turn helps her fight her past trauma and helps her to instill a sense of self . Slowly , she finds confidence . That is marked by another one of my favorite scene from the movie . The one where she drives a car on her own .
Rani realizes that she lacks purpose in her life . She stumbles across an oppurtunity for being a chef and she makes a big decision to participate in it on her own . This is an important decision because she made thus decision on her own . And her friends helped her . She succeeds obviously . Then comes the next favorite part of the entire movie, her first kiss. It was with a very handsome foreigner . He was ranting about how he thought that she was pretty and stuff but she was just thinking about how to do a "lip to lip " kiss. And then we have the first extremely awkward kiss. Why did I like this part? Well cause my first kiss was shitty as fuck . I would've done anything for a perfect first kiss with the love of my life.. But this part showed me that it doesn't always happen that way and THAT'S OKEY. In my case it was a forced and fucked up one but yea whatever ..everything doesn't happen the way we want that's the basic lesson.
Her ex starts to chase after her during this time and she ignores him . Even though sometimes the world around her becomes colorless , her friends and the kindness in their hearts become her light through which she is able to slowly realize her worth and taste the sweet freedom of being independent . She understands that she was actually out of his league and decides to choose her happiness over others. This is marked by the scene where she meets her ex but decides to leave him and go meet with her friends instead. She spends time with them , hugs them and bids them farewell.
In that room she and her friends left certain pieces of their past selves . She left her marriage invitation card and her old self. And came back to India as a true independent Queen , who knew her self worth , power and potential .
"Within my heart , Within my soul
I'll find a space , calm and whole ."

December 2023.
People bustling down in the streets below, the homely cafés, white and sparkly snow cascading down from sky which had orange, pink and blue scattered over it with the CN tower piercing through the sky. Toronto had always been one of Advika's favourite places in the world, the place always helped her relax and destress.
The sound of the front door shutting breaks her subconscious state and she turns back to look at her Canadian best friend, who was joining her in the balcony with two paper cups in his hand.
"I got us some hot chocolate." Shawn said, handing her one of the cups and she muttered a small thank you. She'd never been used to the snow and chillness since it never snowed at most of India, especially where she lived, which was in the South of the country.
Shawn Mendes had been Advika's first friend from the music industry and was also one of the most important people in her life. She'd been signed to Island Records a year after him and he always guided her through work, since he'd got his big break even before Advika joined and knew how hard it was for a newcomer to settle into the fast moving world of music.
The curly haired duo got along well instantly, their love for acoustic music, Harry Potter, romantic clichés and their struggle with anxiety creating a trusting bond very soon. Many rumours of them dating had come up but it never changed a thing between them or made it awkward. They always had each other's backs on both professional and personal fronts- album releases and tours, award functions and galas, crushes and heartbreaks too.
Which is why as soon as Advika's tour ended, she took refuge at his Toronto condo without hesitation, needing some space from the brain clogging tour stress and her break-up with the green eyed Formula 1 driver.
“How’s the tune coming up?” he asks referring to the hour she spent, trying to make a tune for a song she'd been working on for a while.
“Like shit, it feels like my creative energy has been burnt out” she groans, staring at her guitar as if a miracle would occur and finish the song she was working on.
“You need to give yourself a break Advi, all you keep doing is making songs, releasing them and then touring all over the world non stop ever since you’ve come into the industry." he sighs, giving her a concerned look "You didn’t even stop working during the pandemic while everybody was giving themselves a break because of the lockdown. And for god's sake speak to your team about making your tour a little less congested, it's clearly making your health or your personal life worse. ”
"I couldn't help doing that. Try having to be alone in your home for months without being able to step out because the entire world is shut. It's not at all lonely Mendes." she responds sarcastically.
"You need to lighten the weight in your head, what's going on in there?" he asks as they both sit on the couch and look at the view in front of them.
"You worry too much Shawn, I'm alright" she shakes her head, giving a weak chuckle.
"Don't give me that bullshit, you're very easy to read." he gives her a pointed glare "Not to mention, all you've done ever since you came back is sleep and you still look like a train wreck."
"I'm just tired." she sighs "Both physically and mentally. The tour drained all my energy out and things with Charles really hit the rock bottom. I don't know why, but it hurts so much. Which feels so ridiculous because even though we were dating, it wasn't for too long and it didn't make much progress either because we weren't able to spend much time with each other."
"Your mom wasn't wrong you know, you do get really attached to people very soon." he tells her and she leans her head backwards on the wall, feeling exasperated.
Advika would've felt so much better right now if her parents were around. Her appa (father) wouldn't have been happy about her being in a relationship, because he was rather narrow minded, but nevertheless would've helped her reduce her overthinking whereas her amma (mother) wouldn't have minded the relationship and would've given her some relationship advice too. She cursed fate for messing life up like that, all she had was her parents and the accident took them away six years ago.
Her parents had always been supportive about her passion for music, but convincing her amma to agree for signing to Island Records definitely wasn't easy because she stated that her daughter was too naive and trusted people easily, which could cause a lot of trouble in the entertainment industry. after a lot of convincing from the head of Island Records, promising that they'd make sure they would take care of a fifteen year old Advika, her singing career took off.
Naysha, Ria and Shawn's families did treat her like their own, but nothing replaces the void that the loss of parents leaves in a person.
"Please don't tell me you both never had a heart to heart conversation atleast once." he tells her, looking bewildered.
"Of course we did. We've spoken about how exhausting travelling for our career gets but then it doesn't matter because we're lucky enough to get to do what we're doing. We've also spoken about losing important people and the healing process, he's lost people who were very close to him and I've lost my parents. Yeah, there have been heavy conversations. What I meant was that long distance relationships progress really slow and the both of us wanted more than that." Advika explained, taking a sip of the warm beverage in her hand.
"Do you think wanting to keep the relationship on the private side was a bad idea?" Advika pondered.
"Not at all." he nodded his head "Especially with the way people were taking pictures and videos of the both of you when spend the summer break together this year, it's okay that you wanted to keep it away from the public eye until it became a very stable relationship."
The media and fans adored Charles and Advika. The pair first met at Paris to work on a photoshoot for Giorgio Armani, since both of them were the brand ambassadors and a connection sparked instantly. Advika being a huge Formula 1 fan and Charles being quite fluent in music helped them bonded over both the topics and time flew very quickly in those two days, his charm and her compassion blending together effortlessly.
They had also done a few interviews together and attended fashion weeks hosted by the brand, which brought in a lot of public attention towards them. Everybody could see the spark between them.
Advika shook the thoughts away from her head. There was no point reminiscing about the past anymore, she reminded herself. What was the point of a flickering spark when they couldn't even be around each other?
Shawn was probably right, she really needed to take a break.
August 2022.
"So, what do you think of Monaco?" Charles asked Advika, who had her back leaning against the railing of his Yacht.
"It's such a beautiful place." she tells, a happy glint in her eyes "I'll be honest, I normally don't like places which are sunny but I've actually fallen in love with the places here. And I think the beaches here are definitely making me want to stay here."
"I don't think I've been more grateful for paparazzi not being allowed without a permit here, the people aren't making you uncomfortable no?" he asks, referring to how people around them were constantly taking pictures of them.
"That's alright, it's nothing new. Something that we get to experience all the time we're at a public place." she nods her head in understanding" Plus, Formula 1 is a very loved sport at Monaco, so it's understandable that you get a lot of attention here. They love you."
Always so emphatic and sweet, he thought as her words brought a smile on Charles face.
"You look really pretty today." he tells her, admiring how her dusky skin shined under the Monacan sun.
"Says you." she retorts and he gives her a playful look.
"I know you're modest but you can admit that you look good, it's totally alright." he tells her and she rolls her eyes at him.
"Was your plan to make me blush the entire time because it's actually going really great." she tells him, her cheeks getting redder.
"Your cheeks are more red than my sun burn so yes, I think my plan is going really well." he continued teasing her.
"You really need to apply your sunscreen, love." she tried, knowing that he won't listen because she'd been trying to convince him into applying it.
"It's not a big deal Vika, I'll be fine." he shrugs it off lightly and she glares at him in response.
"Alright, I'll do it but only if you ask me to do it in French." he completes with a small smirk.
"Maybe you could teach me how to."
"Pouvez-vous appliquer un peu de crème solaire, mon amour." he tells it slowly with gaps so that she could slowly repeat it after him. (Can you apply some sunscreen, love)
"Je vais le faire, chérie" he replied, wrapping his arms around her waist and placing a kiss on her forehead, noticing the usual red tint that formed on her cheeks whenever he called her "chérie". (I'll do it, darling.)
"You really know how to charm me with your cheesiness Leclerc." she tells, looking up at him.
"You can't blame me for doing that, I've missed you." he chided light heartedly.
"I missed you too, I wish my team kept a longer break in the middle." she sighed, a small frown making it's way onto her face.
"It's alright, you can do it for the next one." he said, rubbing small circles on her waist to calm her down. He noticed during their video calls that tour stressed her out and drained a lot of energy, although she'd never admit it because she loved meeting her fans and singing for them.
When they started dating, she'd been touring for two months and half a year into their relationship now, she'd been done with only three-fourths of it which Charles found really ridiculous because she had to travel every three days and then sink into lots of practice and with breaks of a week's duration coming up once in three months. He had no idea how she managed all the stress that came with a schedule like that, the last thing he wanted was for her to feel more stressed about the fact that they barely got to meet because of their very active work schedules.
"Shall we have food now, des gamins?" Pascale approached them, smiling and they nodded their heads in agreement. (kids)
"I'll help your mum with arranging everything." she told him, slightly tip toeing to place a peck on his cheek "You still haven't applied your sunscreen."
December 2023.
Charles had been a wreck of mixed emotions and he honestly had no clue about how to sort it out.
He missed Advika. He missed everything about her, even those video calls which he thought he hated. He missed the gleam in her eyes, the way her curls were a tangled mess every morning, the blush that appeared on her cheeks every time he said something cheesy and would call her "chérie", he missed the sound of her laugh which ringed even at the smallest jokes and her voice, god that was the one thing that had him holding on despite the long distance. Her voice and the smile that she always had on, no matter how shitty things were for her.
He got tired of the fact that they couldn't be around each other and instead of figuring out a way to be around each other more or at least wait until her tour ended, he just cut it off.
That was a decision worse than the ones his team made last year.
"Tu vas bien, mon fils?" the sound of his mother's voice breaks his chain of thoughts, bringing him back to the moment. (Are you alright, son?)
"Yeah I'm just thinking, nothing much really." he nodded his head at her.
"Sure, the look on your face is definitely saying it's much." she replies sarcastically "Do you want to talk about it."
"I was just thinking about everything that happened with Advika." he sighed and a look of concern appeared on her face.
"Well, do you feel guilty about breaking up with her on a day which was very important to you?"
Damn, what was it with mothers and being so blunt.
"No maman" he whined at her "I feel guilty for letting her go so soon, elle me manque déjà tellement." (I miss her so much.)
"Then talk to her about it. From what I've noticed about her, she's been the most understanding out of all the girlfriends you've had so far. I'm sure she'll at least listen about what you feel."
"She definitely will Maman" he agreed with her "But if we do decide to get together again it won't work out, especially with the way our schedules are set up."
"I think that's ridiculous. When two people really want to be with each other, no matter what comes in between they'll give their best to make sure they stay together despite all of it."
Charles could only accept those words in silence as a response, flying into deep thoughts again.

Pattie Boyd: ‘George and I nearly drowned in a riptide on our Barbados honeymoon’

Pattie Boyd lives in London with her husband, Rod Weston, and their dog, Freddie. A Sixties model and now an acclaimed photographer, she was formerly married to Harrison and Eric Clapton.
I was three years old when my parents moved to Kenya to live with my grandparents. We had a beautiful, big rambling house. The garden went on into the wilderness, it wasn’t unusual to see giraffes and lions wandering in.
Growing up in Africa shaped me. I remember very clearly riding bareback on my horse through woodland. I got used to the unusual. Going to bed one night I heard a noise. Underneath the door was a snake, slowly slithering into my room. I was frozen, absolutely riveted, he was huge. I was nineyears old and I started screaming.
I was sent to boarding school in England when I was ten and it was quite a shock to the system. The other girls didn’t know what I was talking about. Africa was all I knew.

George and I nearly drowned on our honeymoon in Barbados. We stayed in the middle of the island and explored the north coast. One glorious day we went swimming and to my horror I realised that there was a riptide. I was swimming towards the beach and not moving. I realised that if we were to swim parallel to the shore, we might get away from the current. I was terrified. I remember Mick Fleetwood said to me once, it is a weird thing when you know you’re drowning, you start swallowing water and everything becomes euphoric. George and I finally made it to the beach and sat there panting. The waiters brought us sandwiches and we ate the whole lot in shock.
India with the Beatles was a magical time. We were in an ashram, surrounded by like-minded people. The maharishi kept insisting it was very important for us all to learn meditation, for us and for the world. He said things were going to escalate and get faster and meditation would give us the tools to slow life down.
The Beatles would sit on the ashram steps with their guitars, jamming together and singing. They wrote so many songs there, everything from The White Album. The whole vibe was gentle and calming and inspirational.

Touring with Eric was new to me because I never went on tour with George and the Beatles. America was eye-opening. When Eric went on stage, the audience would stretch back as far as the eye could see. I used to sit on the side, drink in one hand, camera in the other. During the encore the audience would lift their lighters into the air and the whole auditorium would be filled with flickering lights in the dark. I love to capture beauty with my camera. It’s like anything fabulous: it’s not going to be there for ever.

Eric didn’t really like travelling otherwise. I think when you’re a musician and you tour, then the idea of travelling for a holiday is not high up on your list.
A place I’ll always love is Venezuela. I went in 1994 when I was single and discovering who I was again. I did a day trip to Angel Falls, eventually reaching the top of a mountain that looked down over an incredibly steep edge. The idea was to go hang-gliding, something that had never crossed my mind before. I said, “Blow that! I’m not jumping off this cliff!” Suddenly an elderly Indian lady ran past us and leapt off the mountain as we watched in horror. Well, we had to do it then, didn’t we? Clutching my camera to my chest, I jumped into nothing. I felt like a condor in the air — I was jumping to freedom.

Peru is a special place. I went there with a female shaman, and I knew I was going to take ayahuasca [a plant-based psychedelic drug]. Greedy me, I ended up doing it twice. It was amazing. We also knew that we would be shedding a lot, both physically and spiritually. Just before we started I noticed a huge snake curled on one of the eaves. Six hours later we walked out and I saw the snake’s skin lying on the floor. The symbolism was clear. I never did ayahuasca with George and Eric, they weren’t adventurous like that.
Growing up in Kenya helped me not to be frightened in life. I am excited because there are more things to see, more adventures, and I don’t like to repeat things, I don’t see the point. There is always something new around the corner.
