And so in time crocodiles became symbols of Sobek, a water god of fertility, and Kom Ombo temple was erected in one of these places in southern Egypt where the swelling flood was first observed every year. In that sacred space, near the riverbank where wild crocodiles lay sunning themselves, captive crocodiles led an indulged life & were buried with due ceremony after death, but in the same time Ancient Egyptian were beleiving that it is apower of evil and they have to controll it, evil because the big crocodiles attacks animals and farmers
So the same temple was dedicated also to Horus, the falcon-headed god,the son of Osiris the god of the other life & Isis godess of magic. The dam,(111 metres) high, with a crest length of (3,830 metres) and a volume of (44,300,000 cubic metres), impounds a reservoir, Lake Nasser, that has a gross capacity of (169 billion cubic metres), Building Aswan High Dam created a big lake, Nasser lake, creation of Nasser reservoir necessitated the costly relocation of different Ancient tourist sites such as Abu Simbel & Philae temples.
Proceed the tour to visit Ancient Egypt granite quarries, where you will see one of best tourist sites in Egypt showing us how ancient Egyptian were working to cut the obelisks from the granite quarries.
No rock speaks such volumes as Hatshipsut queen Unfinished Obelisk, it speaks of the power of the pharaohs, of the triumphs of quarrying and its unimaginable failures. Had it ever made it out of its stone cradle and assumed its position before Karnak (or wherever its creator planned to place it), it would have been the greatest obelisk ever raised, a monument worthy perhaps of "Wonder of the Ancient World" status. As it is, the Unfinished Obelisk is the obelisk raisers most grievous tragedy, a lasting reminder of the limits of human engineering. After visiting Aswan tourist sites, ( OPTIONAL LUNCH ) and transfer for any other direction in Aswan such as Aswan hotels or airport or train station. You can change the last day itinerary in case if you want to go to visit Abu Simbel Temples (Optional tours), then after coming back from Abu Simbel go tho visit the ex tourist sites of Aswan.

Friday, August 9 - King George River
Today was our last excursion day in the Kimberley and it was spectacular. We have come to really enjoy this area, which has so much colorful ancient sandstone, much older and harder than what we have on the Colorado Plateau. The rocks here are older than the black rocks in Westwater or the Vishnu Schist in Grand Canyon, and in fact have outlasted lava flows, which came later, but have since mostly been ground away for nothing.
The Kimberley region is huge - larger than Germany - and extremely sparsely populated. Most of the land belongs to aboriginal peoples, and we are able to visit areas by previously arranged permits. Although I had never heard of the Kimberley area before reading about this trip, it is well known to the many Australians on our cruise, and is fast becoming a popular destination because of the remoteness, beauty and wildlife. We feel lucky to have experienced this very special area.
The King George River was not "discovered" by white men until 1911, as the mouth is hidden between two low sandbars and not really obvious, except by air, or very close sailing. As a result it was named for King George V, although I'm sure it has an aboriginal name. At low flows it is not truly a river, but actually an estuary that winds about 12 kilometers into the interior where it runs into an 80 meter high cliff. The river itself continues another 100 kilometers inland as a freshwater river. At the head of the estuary is a double waterfall that has carved two separate channels deep into the 1.8 billion year old King Leopold sandstone. It usually starts gushing in April - by now in the dry season, both sides are mere trickles compared to the higher flows. For the local Balanggarra people, the falls represent the incarnations of the male and female rainbow serpents.
We took our time going up the river, spending time watching a peregrine falcon on an osprey nest - had he taken over the nest, or just driven off the osprey - we weren't sure. Further up there was a little mangrove area with woolybutt gum trees (a type of eucalyptus) on the slopes above. We spotted some rock ledges probably used as nests by other pergrines, and stuck our nose up in a narrow little channel. We also saw a very large green sea turtle, and later on, a dolphin, although other groups also saw a crocodile and a snake. We took our turn at the waterfalls - and in the shade behind us was a crew boat with champagne (again), so we toasted the falls before heading back, mostly at full throttle.
The bay where we anchored is called Kalooma Bay, and is named after a WWII transport boat that was attacked in 1942 and grounded here inside the sand bank area. The passengers were transported across the bay, and many took part in a long walk out to civilization, guided by local aboriginal peoples. The captain and some of the crew made repairs as best they could to the ship, refloated her, and limped without a rudder to nearby Wyndham, where she was attacked again in two days later and sunk. This all happened at about the same time as the crash of the C53 just south of here, and both shortly after the bombing of Darwin.
Since we had had our excursion in the morning, we attended a great lecture on the early days of WWII in Australia. As I've mentioned before, I had always assumed only Darwin was bombed, and then only the one time. In fact, Darwin was bombed close to 100 times, and there were lots of incidents all over northern and northwestern Australia. Most of the Australian forces were fighting in Europe, helping to defend Britain, so the defenses in Australia often fell to young, barely trained defenders. One of the interesting things is that many Australians do not hold Churchill in high regard, since he seemed to care little for the defense of Australia, and even after Darwin was attacked, he wanted Australian forces to come to the aid of India by fighting in Burma. It's fascinating to hear about history from another point of view.
After our early evening expedition recap there were a couple of more short presentations - the last one was a tongue in cheek presentation about "drop bears" - we know them as koalas - and how to protect oneself from these murderous, vicious creatures. It seems it involves smearing oneself with anti-drop bear substances such as Vegemite, and staying away from trees. I guess we should consider ourselves lucky since we are outside of the main drop bears (thylarctos plummetus) area!
Tomorrow will be a sea day, as our next stop will be Darwin, where we will change over some passengers and crew, and then set sail for Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. We will miss the new friends we made, but will try to keep in touch, and maybe see them again on another voyage - this segment in the Kimberley has gone altogether too fast!

Lucky Ladies eat the Supermarket Poke
On Friday morning, the guys and I played tennis at the hotel before packing our bags for Kaua’i. After a kerfuffle with the taxi company, we got to the Grand Hyatt just before dinner. We ate high quality sushi at Stevenson’s Library on the premises.
Peggy arranged a tour of Hanapepe Valley and Waimea Canyon for Saturday. Our guide for the day, Noah, was knowledgeable, chill, and a great orator. We stopped at many different lookout points along the route, each of which gave us a different perspective of the canyon.
During the drive, Noah told us the tale of Humehume, the lost prince of Kaua’i. In the 1800s, the King of Kaua’i paid an American captain to take his 5-year-old son, Humehume, to the States for an American education. It is said that the King did this in the hopes that his son would return as an ambassador and help protect the island from being conquered.
From that point on, Humehume’s life was filled with strife, manual labor, and misfortune. With a stroke of luck, Humehume was finally reunited with his family by some Christian missionaries when he was in his twenties.
Noah was filled with tales like this. He was also knowledgeable about the local plants and was able to pick fresh guava fruit off of the trees he spotted from the road. We stopped at Ishihara Market for some of the most affordable, high-quality poke we’ve ever had.
Next up, we went to the Allerton Garden for a sunset tour. There, we learned about a variety of endemic and non-native plants that grow in Hawaii. The highlights of the night were the bamboo forest and the Moreton Bay fig or Australian banyan trees.
The following day, we left the resort in the afternoon to get to our 5-hour long Nā Pali Coast sunset cruise. The staff on board the Lucky Lady were all super friendly, chill, and helpful. From the boat, we were able to view Waimea Canyon from below, along with beautiful ridged sea cliffs. We were also lucky enough to see flying fish or mālolo. I got a little sea sick in the last hour or so but kept it together.
On Monday we got up early for a tour of the southeast side of the island. First, we visited Poipu Beach to see the sea turtles resting on the sand. Our next two stops were lookouts of the Menehune Fishpond and Wailua Falls.
Between stops, Jon insisted that we stop at a 7/11 so he could try some pork buns. After Jon’s snack, we stopped at a Hindu Monastery and an overlook of ‘Ōpaeka’a Stream. The monastery had a mini Banyan tree forest and a beautiful view of the north fork of the Wailua River.
Our next viewing spot was of the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge and lighthouse. There, we saw red-footed boobies and white-tailed tropicbirds.
En route to our next destination, a metal plate on the bottom of our guide’s car partially detached and began dragging along the road. We hung out for a while before our guide’s friend came and took the plate off.
Continuing with the tour, we went to Black Pot Beach which provided us with a view of the shoreline and mountains. The water on this beach was shallow and calm for hundreds of meters. We took nice pictures from the pier and then went on our way. The last stop of the day was the Hanalei Valley lookout, where we were able to see the taro fields.
We went back to the hotel for a quick change and then headed back out for dinner at Merriman’s. There, we celebrated Peggy’s big birthday and had the best fish of the trip, Macadamia-Crusted Mahi Mahi. We got Peggy a complimentary birthday mousse and candle that she almost sent back due to the lack of chocolate. After dinner, we got sucked into a bamboo store, bought some clothes, and were tempted by a mattress.
The next morning, we popped champagne at Brennecke’s before heading to the airport for the final leg of our trip.

Moonshine, shotguns, buried cash: Bruce Campbell on 'The Evil Dead' in East Tennessee.
There are plenty of structurally sound homes scattered throughout East Tennessee's woods for tourists to enjoy, yet some prefer to visit the ruins of a Morristown cabin. Of course, it's the only cabin in the state once surrounded by demonizing trees and where zombies could be found locked in the cellar. A handful of circumstances led a Michigan film crew to East Tennessee in the late '70s to film the low-budget movie "The Evil Dead." More than 40 years later, the film is till very much alive in horror-enthusiast circles, with a special virtual screening scheduled for Jan. 23. The screening will include behind-the-scenes commentary from producer and actor Bruce Campbell, who recently spoke with Knox News about his time in East Tennessee and what's next for the "Evil Dead" franchise.
Check out our conversation with Campbell and visit bit.ly/WatchwithBruce to purchase tickets, starting at $25.
How'd you end up in East Tennessee?
The crew planned to shoot the film in Michigan, but as delays got longer and the weather got colder, the thought of shooting outdoors in the North sounded less appealing.
"There were plenty of isolated cabins in Michigan that would have done the trick, but we went south," Campbell told Knox News.
The crew connected with folks from Tennessee's film commission, who then connected them with a local to drive them around.
"And we checked out half a dozen different possible places and finally found this creepy-ass place outside of Morristown," Campbell said.
He visited the cabin a few years back, although there's not much left of it.
"But it's private property, you know — 'Stay the hell off,'" Campbell said. "The usual deal (in) Tennessee: Shoot first, ask questions later. I never encourage people to go see it because part of the placed burned down in the '80s, but part of the fireplace still exists."
That hasn't stopped people from showing up at conventions with bricks to show Campbell, as the site has become a tourist destination of sorts.
Was the cabin as scary as it looks?
Fans of "The Evil Dead" might be surprised to learn the cabin was more scary than it appeared on screen.
"It had no power," Campbell said. "It had cow s--- on the floor. We had to knock doors and ceilings out and stuff. There was a lot of work to do. The locals showed up after a thunderstorm and said, 'Hey, have you seen Clara?'"
The story goes that people were once killed in the cabin during a storm, but Clara ran off.
Clara was rumored to come back to the cabin during storms and would have been an old lady at the time of filming "The Evil Dead."
"And so we were waited to see with bated breath if anyone caught out of the corner of their eyes some old woman crawling through the underbrush whose name happened to be Clara," Campbell said.
What was your experience in East TN?
Coming to East Tennessee in 1979 was a "fascinating cultural experience," Campbell said.
"It was all new," he said. "In 1979 you knew Tennessee was not Michigan. ... It changed in Kentucky, and we drove down."
Being that Campbell was a producer, he went to a bank to take out $10,000 in cash that he recalls smelling like dirt. He asked the woman at the bank if he was imagining the smell.
"Oh yeah, people still bury it in their back yard," he recalls her saying.
The crew tried their first moonshine in Tennessee, which they acquired along with marijuana from a local.
"We learned a lot about moonshine," Campbell said. "Too much. Too much."
Why did you decide on horror?
Campbell's early "Super 8" movies were slapstick style — "very 'Jackass'-like," he said.
But that changed after "The Evil Dead" director Sam Raimi, Campbell's high school friend, went off to college.
"He was sort of studying humanities or something and studied like the Sumerian book of the dead," Campbell said. "And that kind of caught his attention."
They knew they wanted to get into the movie industry after high school; they just didn't know what kind of movie to make.
"We sort of thought horror would be pretty safe," he said. "It's cheap, you don't have to have name actors, you can use regular street clothes and cars. Nothing had to be glitzy or fancy. If we did a comedy, you'd have to have John Candy or somebody. But, in this case, you were off the hook. Horror was very forgiving."
Raimi was interested in the subject matter, Campbell said. Once "The Evil Dead" story was selected, he was all in.
"We also thought no holds barred," Campbell said. "This movie is potentially unrated. Let's not pull any punches."
What were some low-budget tricks?
Being that the film was low budget, Campbell said, there were some tricks the crew used to make shots work.
"Every hour of every day on that shoot we were faking it," he said.
The moonshine they couldn't drink went onto the fire just before cameras rolled to make the flames roar.
"So we learned how to do that real cheaply," he said. "We learned to just use a real shotgun with real ammunition. That was just the easiest way to do it. ... The shadow passes over the window, you turn and you blow the window out with the shotgun just standing right there — no safety glasses, no earmuffs, no nothing.
"So simpler times, but stupider times. Hell yeah."
How do you illustrate fear on camera?
Illustrating fear on camera is just like illustrating any other emotion: You fake it, Campbell said.
He remembers someone at a Q&A criticizing his "Evil Dead" performance for being over-the-top.
"Sir, excuse me," Campbell recalls saying. "Can you verify sitting in that chair right now how you would react if your (girlfriend's) eyes turned white and she flew up into the air and got possessed and tried to rip your throat out? Would you react like Clint Eastwood? I would scream like a girl."
Campbell said his performances are "protected" by the fact no one knows how they actually would react. And while many modern films require even more faking, due to computer technology replacing sets, "The Evil Dead" had an advantage.
"You don't see anything anymore," Campbell said. "At least with the first 'Evil Dead,' you're in a real cabin in the middle of nowhere in the Deep South in 1979. I mean, it was weird as --- already.
"So, the nice little edge that 'Evil Dead' gets is it's a little docu-horror once you get deeper into the shoot and we all get a little crazier."
Why have you stuck with the franchise?
One of the reasons Campbell continues to be a part of the franchise is his love for his Ash character.
"He has no skills," he said. "In this case, the guy who saves the world from evil multiple times is — by the time he gets to the TV show, he's doing mescaline, he's drinking his ass off, he smokes reefer constantly. This is my kind of hero."
What will the screening be like?
The virtual watch party and live commentary will be different than what some fans are used to. Campbell will have the ability to stop and start the movie to share his thoughts.
"My problem with commentary always in the past is you see something that triggers it — a stunt or a punch in the face — and you tell about what happened," he said. "But then, you tell that story and you look back and you missed three other stories you could have told if that film hadn't just rolled along."
What's it like to watch yourself?
When asked what it's like to watch a young version of himself on screen, Campbell explained how being an actor is a double-edged sword. On one hand, every bad photo taken of Campbell is out there for the world to see.
"But then your best work is documented," he said. "That's what's awesome. Because a lot of guys go, 'I remember back in the day the chicks thought I was hot.' And most people are like, 'Yeah, yeah — sure pal.' At least I can suggest a couple of movies that I go, 'Well, this is me when I could do s---.'"
What's next for 'Evil Dead'?
Campbell said he's planning to shoot the next "Evil Dead" movie in New Zealand later this year. The film will be set in a modern-day urban setting.
While he couldn't share much about the film, he did emphasize that "it's out of the woods."
"That's the best thing to say," he said.
Campbell also has a film called "Black Friday," in which he plays a manager at a toy store invaded by aliens on Black Friday. Campbell said he's interested in doing a drive-in tour and that it would make "a whole lot of sense" to show 'The Evil Dead' somewhere near Knoxville.
"Maybe I'll see you there in East Tennessee with this new movie," he said.
What are the challenges of COVID-19?
Campbell filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic in December, even though he had no clue what to expect.
"The whole crew looks like Darth Vader," Campbell said. "In proximity, you have to go beyond the mask. You have to put the shield too. The good news is Tom Cruise would shout at us, of course, if we had any problems with COVID."
In all seriousness, he said. the industry has been doing a good job taking precautions making sure work can be completed safely.
"Everything's more complicated, but it can still be done," he said.

10 Places Where The Jetset Are Skiing This Season
#1 Courchevel, France
The highest of Courchevel’s five villages, officially simply called Courchevel, is the prestigious place to stay in this French resort in at one end of the 600km Trois Vallées ski area. Still often known by its erstwhile moniker, 1850, not only is it the main lift hub, with gondolas heading up in three different directions, it is home to huge numbers of four-star, five-star, and Palace status hotels, luxury chalets and some pricey shops.
#2 Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy
Italy’s chicest destination is an ancient mountain town in the Dolomite mountains surrounded by soaring cathedrals of sandstone. In Cortina, the business of skiing and snowboarding plays second fiddle to the social sport of seeing and being seen outside and inside the elegant boutiques and antique shops lining the pedestrianized main street, Corso Italia.
The center of the village is dominated by a green and white bell tower and a glittering confection of grand 19th-century mansions. Encroaching twilight is the signal for Cortina to come out and play – a colony of voluminous fur coats and designer ski wear gathers noisily in the Piazza Venezia at the start of the evening passeggiata. Then, much later, the party atmosphere is transferred to intimate wine bars, expensive restaurants, and a smattering of softly-lit nightclubs
#3 Verbier, Switzerland
Some Swiss resorts may match Verbier for luxurious chalets and hotels and vibrant après, but none quite have its cool cachet – and that’s large because none can rival its challenging high-altitude terrain. Anyone who can handle Verbier’s itinerary routes, never mind the couloirs, can consider themselves pretty darn good.
Along with black runs and unmarked off-piste runs to explore with a mountain guide, the itineraries (which, though loosely marked, are not formally controlled or patrolled) are where many experts spend their time. From the top of the ski area, Mont Fort at 3,330m, there is only one black run and serious off-piste to be tackled with a guide – but everyone should ride to the top for the views.
#4 Lech, Austria
Few resorts have a more exclusive image than Lech. Princess Diana was its most famous patron and other past visitors include the Jordanian royal family, the Dutch royal family, and Monaco’s Princess Caroline. But despite its blue-blooded guest list, Lech is far from showy.
The original cluster of inns has expanded in both quality and quantity, and there are three five-star superior hotels, along with some award-winning restaurants. The car-free satellite of Oberlech above the village, once the summer domain of shepherds and cowherds, has also grown almost into a resort in its own right, with huts replaced by expensive hotels. While many Austrian resorts are well known for lively après ski, Lech best suits more sophisticated, cocktail-sipping types.
#5 Megève, France
The epitome of aristo chic, Megève, a former farming village, was founded in 1916 by Baroness Noémie de Rothschild, who decided that France should have its own St Moritz. It succeeded in attracting the rich and famous – in the 1950s French singer, Sacha Distel was king, sharing bubbles with Yves Montand, Brigitte Bardot, and Jean Cocteau among others.
Today, it is home to nine five-star hotels and five Michelin-starred restaurants, as well as several of the world’s finest mountain spas. Glittering boutiques and galleries line the traffic-free medieval center and ancient cobbled streets, and mean, along with an outdoor ice rink, splendid church, and horse-drawn sleighs, that Megève suits those looking for an all-round winter holiday, not just pounding the slopes.
#6 St Moritz, Switzerland
Welcome to the world capital of winter glitz – walking the streets in high season, it would seem that Prada and Bogner are the sole manufacturers of ski wear and that mink fur coats are mandatory. St Moritz is divided into three villages, Dorf, Bad, and Celerina, around or near Lake St Moritz, with Dorf having the pick of shops, nightlife, and restaurants.
However, there’s more to St Moritz than bling. Its position close to the border with Italy and a ski area high point of 3,305m gives it a rare combination of both snow and sun reliability. It was also the first all-round winter-sports resort in the world and boasts a myriad of on and off-snow attractions from skating and bobsleigh to polo, horse racing, and cricket on the frozen lake.
#7 Aspen, USA
During the 1880s Aspen in Colorado enjoyed a brief silver-mining boom and then, after decades of neglect, its historic core was brought back to life thanks to the American skiing boom of the late 20th century. Glamorous and fashionable, it is delightful to stroll around in the evenings, window shopping in designer boutiques from Dior to Moncler, and enjoying the varied restaurants and bars, of which there are over 100.
Aspen has four separate ski areas – Buttermilk, Aspen Highlands, Snowmass, and Aspen Mountain. Aspen Mountain, with long cruising blue runs and short, steep blacks, is accessed from town by gondola, while the other three are reached by free shuttle buses. Buttermilk is the smallest and least challenging, Snowmass the most extensive with terrain for all, and Aspen Highlands has both easy intermediate slopes and the super steeps of Highlands Bowl.
#8 Kitzbühel, Austria
This medieval town with its heavily buttressed walls and delicately painted frescoes, set against the beautiful backdrop of the Wilder Kaiser mountains, is one of the most beautiful in Austria. Pretty, pedestrianized streets are lined with luxury hotels, smart fashion boutiques, and wickedly expensive cafés.
Judge by the fur-clad clientèle browsing shop windows, and Kitzbühel also might seem the ritziest resort in Austria. However, while there is a wonderful choice of four- and five-star hotels, even at the top end of the tree prices don’t reach stratospheric heights. It’s also one of those rare resorts that genuinely appeals to non-skiers, and has a buzzing nightlife scene.
#9 Courmayeur, Italy
This traditional mountaineering village sits at the foot of Mont Blanc at one end of the Mont Blanc tunnel, with Chamonix in France at the other end. The heart of Courmayeur is the pedestrianized Via Roma, lined with smart boutiques and enticing bars and restaurants, as well as delicatessens and shops selling antiques or homewares. Restaurants both in town and on the mountain are of a particularly high standard, and Courmayeur is one of the spiritual homes of the long, lazy lunch.
Courmayeur is less than two hours from both Geneva (116km) and Turin (150km), making it ideal for a short trip. Well‑heeled Italians from Milan and Turin arrive en masse on Friday evenings, thronging the designer boutiques and cocktail bars. Fortunately, since the ski area is a compact 36km, only a small number hit the slopes – they come for the party rather than the piste.
#10 Zermatt, Switzerland
There's a busy, prosperous feel to the center of Zermatt, with ambling fur-coated couples, designer shoppers, and Japanese or Chinese tour groups rubbing shoulders with purposeful mountaineering types. Switzerland’s most famous resort also brings together every scenic Alpine cliché, from the world’s most photogenic mountain, the Matterhorn, to streets lined with a jumble of blackened, weathered, wobbly-looking chalets.
Views from everywhere on Zermatt’s varied, extensive slopes are stunning, including from its outstanding mountain restaurants and spectacular gondola lift to the resort high point of Klein Matterhorn at almost 4,000m. Plentiful long, scenic red and blue runs will satisfy intermediates, while itinerary runs (avalanche controlled but not patrolled) and off‑piste challenges are the main attraction for experts, especially those willing to ski tour or heliski. For extra mileage, Zermatt is linked to the slopes of Cervinia in Italy.

Spring Break 101
Many times, money is the sole factor for stopping students from participating in Spring Break. We only have four years to participate in these weeks of a lifetime, though. In this blog post, I have some of the best tips to make sure you have the time of your life while saving money and also staying safe.
1) Book Early
I’m sure you’ve all heard the term “the early bird gets the worm” – this is true when booking vacations! There is a catch to this tip, however. Often times, it saves money to book the hotel and other excursions early. However, with flights, it is best to book seven weeks in advance. If you are planning a Spring Break trip for March in July, it is not a good idea to book your flights that far in advance. In fact, it is likely that the flights may not even be available for that time. Going off of when to book to your flights, studies show that Tuesdays at 3pm is the most assured way that you will snag a great travel deal. Do your best to use some of the tips and tricks mentioned in my past blog post, such as kayak.com and hopper.com and you will save a ton of money on flights while also booking your hotel for a small fee.
2) Use Student Discount Websites
A couple of my favorite Spring Break planning websites are studentcity.com and gobluetours.com. They have representatives who are also students. If you request information, they will be there to help you every step of the way and can remind you of dates and deadlines to help you save money. On top of that, they offer tons of information about the destinations you are going. They have videos from past Spring Breaks, a look at the hotels they have to offer, and pricing for each and every option. If you gather a group of 16 people or more, you can actually all get discounted prices for your spring break trip. Another feature of these websites that I love is the ability for everyone to pay separately. This means not having to charge 20 different people on Venmo and taking all of the money out of your own bank account. With studentcity.com, each person can make their own account and pay there. The payment plans also make these options incredibly helpful. They only require a $50-$100 down payment and allow you to pay off the trip monthly or bi monthly leading up until the month before your trip.
On top of all of this wonderful stuff, they give you the opportunity to buy traveler’s insurance for an incredibly low price. This means that if you get sick before the trip and are unable to go or get sick while on vacation, they will cover a majority of your expenses or the cost of your whole trip. You truly have nothing to lose while booking with these platforms and that is why they are some of my favorites. Last but not least, they offer staff on site and give you a wristband to wear with a number to call if you or someone needs a student city staffer. Spring break can be a ton of fun, but it can also sometimes be dangerous, so Student City does their best to make sure their travelers are covered if anything bad were to happen. All of their staff members are trained and willing to help no matter what the scenario. They have tents located around the resorts and up and down the beach so that you can always find someone if a scenario calls for you to!

3) Spring Break Wardrobe
Though this may not be a consideration for most people, this is certainly a consideration for me. I know that I love to go on vacation with some fresh new outfits to rock on the beach, the booze cruise or at dinner. Make sure to plan ahead and find out when the retail deals are. Black Friday is obviously one of the number one money saving days in retail. If you are anything like me, though, and choose to spend that day with your family instead of in a crowded mall, lifehacker.com says January is the best time in the year to buy clothing.
Being that we live in Wisconsin, we can sometimes predict when retail stores are going to launch their summer clothes. It probably isn’t going to happen in November when it is starting to get cold. That is, however, when a lot of swimsuits, shorts, dresses and tank tops will go on sale. Make sure to pay attention to those sales and grab the items so that when your trip comes in March, you will have brand new and untouched clothes that you got for a fraction of the price they were when they came out in April!
4) Excursions
Groupon is one of my favorite money saving websites when it comes to vacations. They offer you coupons on things from drinking and dining to snorkeling to beach chairs. Browse Groupon continually to see if you can save money while booking the extracurriculars you plan to partake in while you are in tropical paradise and escaping the cold weather.
Another one of my favorite sayings is “The more, the merrier” – this is especially true when booking activities to participate in on your vacation. Often times, companies will offer group discounts for those who want to go snorkeling, rent paddleboards, do a sunset dinner cruise, whale watch, etc. Take advantage of that and round up as many people as you can!
5) Alcohol and Food
Depending on where you go, alcohol will have different tax rates. If you’re going to South Padre Island, the island will certainly jack up their prices while all the Spring Breakers are there. I mean why wouldn’t they? It’s genius! Try to pay attention to where booze is the cheapest, though. If you have room for it, stock up on your alcohol while you’re in Wisconsin and transport it down there. It’ll save you a ton of money.
Mexico, however, has way different laws on alcohol than does the United States. You could try to pack a bottle of Bacardi in your carry on, but I’m going to go ahead and guess that the TSA will have something to say about that one. If you don’t have an all-inclusive package at your resort in Mexico, seek out a local liquor store or a Walmart and buy and make your own drinks. Most resorts in Mexico allow people to have their own alcohol on site and also allow guests to bring their drinks down to the pool. Make sure to check the resort’s policy on that, however, because many of them differ and we don’t want anyone getting in trouble for violating the resort’s rules.
Like alcohol, food can get expensive at both airports and resorts. Do your research before hand to try and find local spots that offer cheap meals and drinks for spring breakers and tourists. As mentioned n my first blog post, don’t be afraid to ask the locals where good places to eat are. They live there and likely have for a while, so they are very aware of the good spots to go to and which ones to avoid. When flying, try to bring your own snacks from home instead of purchasing the $9 bag of chips that they may offer you.
6) Nightlife
Another feature of Student City spring break that I love is the ability to buy a travel pass. This travel pass is anywhere from $50 - $100 and gets you into a variety of night clubs for every night you are there. Along with that, they offer you drink discounts, food discounts and sometimes even free drinks and food. These cards are so incredibly worth it because often times the covers can range anywhere from $15-$50 a night. If you go out for 5 nights, that adds up really quick. Purchase the party pass from Student City and you will have VIP access to these night clubs and be able to skip the line. You will also be with other Student City spring breakers, so you may have some people you met from the resorts that will also attend those nightclubs. Plus, you know that everyone is ready to have fun!

The Weekend Warrior 9/3/21: SHANG-CHI, CINDERELLA, WORTH, MOGUL MOWGLI, YAKUZA PRINCESS, YEAR OF THE EVERLASTING STORM, and More
There’s only one new wide release this week but I’m not gonna say this movie title five times, because it’s so freakin’ long, that I can only really say it once. But it’s a good one! There’s also so many limited releases that as always, I just couldn’t get to all of them. (Word of warning: This column was finished under the influence of Churches' excellent new record, Screen Violence.)
Marvel Studios’ second movie of 2021, SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS (Marvel/Disney) stars Simu Liu as the “Master of Kung-Fu” from the comics, making his very first appearance in any live-action form that I know of. I have to say that I loved the comics as a kid and was truly bummed when I sold my whole collection, knowing that a lot of the great run of the comics from the ‘70s and ‘80s that have never been reprinted. That being said, this is Marvel’s first solo character introduction going all the way back to Brie Larson as Captain Marvel back in March, 2019, and before that, you’d have to go back November, 2016 for Doctor Strange, since Black Panther was introduced in Captain America: Winter Soldier.
Shang-Chi is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who broke onto the scene with indie films like I Am Not a Hipster and the better-received Short Term 12, which also introduced much of the world to Larson, and then the two of them made an adaptation of The Glass House. Cretton then directed Michael B. Jordan, and again, Larson, in Just Mercy for Warner Bros., which grossed $36 million in early 2020 but never quite achieved the Oscar hopes some were expecting. Still, all that work with Larson paid off, because it got him a meeting with Kevin Feige and Marvel for him to pitch this.
Granted, Simu Liu is a bit of an unknown quantity, having not made too many movies and being best known for the sitcom, Kim’s Convenience. On the other hand, his co-star Awkwafina has been building quite an impressive career from her roles in the 2018 hits, Crazy Rich Asians and Ocean’s 8, plus her starring role in the indie, The Farewell, for which she won a Golden Globe (but really should have gotten an Oscar nomination). She’s taken that success to put it into her Comedy Central show, Nora from Queens, while also providing her voice for lots of animated movies, including this year’s Disney animated movie, Raya and the Last Dragon. Most who have seen the movie early have mentioned that her comic chemistry with Lu has stolen the movie and oddly, her “best friend” character Katy seems to be heading towards a larger part in the MCU.
If we look at movies based around characters who received solo films before appearing anywhere else in the MCU, we get the aforementioned Captain Marvel movie, which had an insane $153 million opening weekend, doing even better than the Distinguished Competition’s own solo female movie, Wonder Woman, even though the latter was definitely better known. Captain Marvel ended up grossing over $400 million domestic and over a billion worldwide. The Doctor Strange movie that preceded it, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, didn’t do quite well but still opened with $85 million and made $232 million domestic. A year earlier, Marvel Studios’ attempt to make Ant-Man a thing led to one of their bigger disappointments with that opening with “just” $57 million and grossing $180 million domestic. (That also cost $30 million less than Doctor Strange and $45 million less than Captain Marvel, but when you get to those budgets over $100 million, every dollar counts to making back that budget.)
As with many MCU movies, Shang-Chi has been receiving rave reviews with a strong 92% on Rotten Tomatoes from over 140 reviews (at this writing). My review of this is over at Below the Line, and I loved it, too. The big selling point for Shang-Chi is that like Black Panther was to African-Americans, this character is to Asian-Americans, being able to see the first Marvel movie starring an Asian-American, as well as a mostly Asian cast that includes the great Tony Leung and Michelle Yeoh (who also starred in Crazy Rich Asians).
There are a few factors to bear in mind, and not just the COVID Delta variant one that we’ve been hearing so much about -- there’s no denying that things are getting worse, and hopefully this can be quelled before there’s another shutdown. This weekend is the four-day weekend with Labor Day on Monday, which has never been a great weekend at the movies, partially because schools have either started or are about to start and people just stop going to movies, despite there having been plenty of early September hits like Warner Bros’ It. September is definitely a new month for Marvel to release a movie, but with all the delays due to COVID, it’s a good (I’m not gonna use the term “experiment) to see if Marvel really can withstand the proverbial 12-month release calendar rather than their movies needing to be released over the summer or holidays or any other month.
Unlike the recent Black Widow, which had a substantial $80 million opening, Shang-Chi is not being released simultaneously on Disney+ via Premier Access, which presumably will mean more people will have to go see the movie in theaters during its 45-day run before heading home, but the question really is “Will they?” Besides Crazy Rich Asians, which did incredibly well among non-Asians, there haven’t been a ton of movies with Asian casts that have done well just due to the fact -- I mean, look at the recent Snake Eyes from Paramount Pictures. It didn’t get nearly as good reviews, but it’s another superhero movie with a mostly Asian cast, and that community didn’t get behind it at all. Maybe we can say the same about Raya but that also was released much earlier in the pandemic.
With that in mind, I do think Shang-Chi is good for a four-day opening between $53 million and $57 million, although I don’t think we can expect this to have the same impact as a Marvel movie with a well-known character or actor in the lead.
This weekend’s four-day box office should look something like this:
1. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (Marvel/Disney) - $55.6 million N/A
2. Candyman (Universal) - $13.2 million -40%
3. Free Guy (20th Century/Disney) - $11 million -16%
4. Paw Patrol: The Movie (Paramount) - $7 million +6%
5. Jungle Cruise (Walt Disney Pictures) - $4.5 million -10%
6. Don’t Breathe 2 (Sony/Screen Gems) - $2 million -30%
7. Respect (MGM) - $1.8 million -20%
8. The Suicide Squad (Warner Bros.) - $1.3 million -35%
9. The Protégé (Lionsgate) - $1.4 million -43%
10. The Night House (Searchlight) - $800k -39%
Hitting Amazon Prime Video on Friday (as well as select theaters in New York and L.A.) is Kay Cannon’s musical CINDERELLA (Amazon), which was originally going to be released theatrically by Sony Pictures in January, but it then became one of the first movies to have its production be shut down by COVID, so everything was delayed, and then Sony just decided to sell it off to Amazon, but considering everything going on, that may have been the wise choice, since I have a feeling more people will see this on Amazon then would have gone out to theaters with COVID, school starting, etc. Either way, you can read my interview with Kay Cannon over at Below the Line.
The movie stars pop star Camila Cabello In the title role of the musical was the brainchild of James Corden, who is no stranger to musicals. In fact, he seems to appear in almost every single one, or is that me? The nice thing is that you already know the story, as that hasn’t changed much, although Cannon definitely gives it a more modern spin in terms of Ella being far more feisty and a truly modern woman despite living in times where women aren’t allowed to do their own thing. Ella wants to be a designer, and she’s already making progress as she sews beautiful dresses in the basement where she’s kept by her stepmother (Idina Menzel) and taunted by her stepsisters (Maddie Baillio and Charlotte Spencer). One day, she meets the Prince Robert (Nicholas Galzitine) in the woods and has such an effect on him that he decides to hold a ball and invite all the women in the land in order to find a princess.
Like I said, pretty much the same story that we’ve seen in so many adaptations and quite a few musicals, and really, what probably will stand out more than anything is how talented Cabello is, considering that this is her first acting role in a major feature, and she kills it. I wouldn’t say that I love all the song choices, but I did love most of the arrangements, and there are so many great standout moments like “Shining Star” performed by Billy Porter as Cinderella’s “Fab G” (replacing and gender-switching her Fairy Godmother) and Menzel’s performance of her own song she wrote for the movie is a definite showstopper.
Obviously, casting the likes of Menzel and Porter means you have a couple ringers, but Minnie Driver is also great and even Pierce Brosnan kind of makes up for his horrific singing performance in Mamma Mia! This time, he gets something more in his range. And James Corden is in it, but it's such a small role that even those who truly hate him don't have enough time to do so.
It’s probably a cliché to say that this Cinderella won’t be for everyone, and I’m sure many critics had their knives out for it sight unseen. Personally, I know tons of fans of musicals and movies like Into the Woods, and yes, the Pitch Perfect movies, who will really enjoy what Kay Cannon and her talented cast and crew have done with the story. Kay Cannon’s Cinderella is a movie that’s more about fun entertainment than anything particularly cerebral, and in days like these, maybe that’s all that is needed sometimes.
There's a ton of other interesting indie films out this week… some of them are even good!
A movie that many (hopefully) will view with interest is Bassam Tariq’s MOGUL MOWGLI (Strand Releasing), co-written by and starring Riz Ahmed, which premiered all the way back at the Berlin Film Festival in February 2020. Besides it being of interest due to Ahmed’s presence, Tariq is also rumored to be directing the new Blade movie for Marvel Studios, starring Mahershala Ali, so many will (hopefully) be checking out this movie for that reason alone. (It certainly grabbed my interest.)
In the movie, Ahmed plays Zaheer who raps under the pseudonym of Zed, but he’s a Pakistani living in London at odds with his parents and the Muslim traditions put upon him. Just as he’s about to go on a major tour that could give his career a much-needed push, he suddenly loses the ability to walk and is diagnosed with a muscular disease that will involve stem cell therapy.
Okay, yes, this is another movie involving Ahmed as a performer who is hit by a debilitating condition much like his Oscar-nominated turn in Sound of Metal, but this is a very different movie that also deals with culture and religion and other things that just had much of an impact on me. Zaheer is told by his doctor that after the procedure, he would be unable to have kids, so he should freeze his sperm, and there’s a scene that I personally experienced when I was told the same before my stem cell transplant.
As much as this is very much a family drama, there’s also an interesting almost horror element to Mogul Mowgli as Zameer is constantly being plagued by hallucinations and nightmares, but there’s also some light humor in the fact that his main competition, another Pakistani rapper named “RPG,” is a bit of an idiot. But this really is Ahmed’s show, and heck, I might go so far to say that I think Ahmed’s performance in this movie is even better than his performance in Sound of Metal if you can believe that.
Mogul Mowgli proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that Riz Ahmed’s Oscar nomination was no fluke. He is clearly one of the best actors we have today, and he also shows that lacking the right material, he’s just going to write his own. It's opening at New York's Film Forum on Friday, and I'm not sure where else.
Brazilian filmmaker Vicente Amorim’s action-thriller YAKUZA PRINCESS (Magnet) -- which has played a couple recent genre festivals like Fantasia in Montreal -- really should be my kind of movie. Based on the Manga of the same name, it’s set in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where I used to live as a kid, believe it or not, but it’s also one of the largest Japanese communities outside Japan. In this environment comes newcomer Masumi as Akemi, who was orphaned as a child and left in Sao Paulo, but she later learns she’s the heiress to the Yakuza crime syndicate. She ends up meeting a badly scarred-up stranger with amnesia (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) who believes an ancient katana sword might bind their fates.
Like I said, this should be my kind of movie, because I love Yakuza films and crime films set in the world of Japanese crime, and as I said, I lived in Brazil, so that country still hold a place in my heart. Unfortunately, I’ve seen a lot of amazing Yakuza films from the great Takashi Miike, and this one is just so erratic in terms of pacing and tone that it really took me quite some time to really get into it.
Unfortunately, this movie at its core feels like another Kill Bill wannabe where Amorim relies so much on being super-stylish and throwing in lots of fast editing to make up for the lack of originality or any real substance.
The writing in the movie isn’t great, at least at first, but it’s also far too obvious how new and green Masumi is as an actor, because she delivers her lines and swordplay with very little charisma, and Rhys Meyers isn’t much better. In fact, the film’s best parts are the ones in Japanese, but that’s in the second half where the movie slows down considerably. There is the expected amount of gory swordplay and people being shot in the head, but there’s also way too much unnecessary exposition, much of it in bad English.
There’s just no way around that this is a movie that tries to jump on a genre bandwagon that has been handled so much better by Japanese filmmakers, while this just fails to keep the viewer interested beyond its soundtrack and the score by Lucas Marcier and Fabiano Krieger, which is pretty fantastic. Sure, it’s pretty violent and gory, but at times, it relies too much on viewers really only being on board for that. Other times, it feels like a patchwork of elements that don’t necessarily work together but also feels so derivative of so many better films.
Essentially, Yakuza Princess is yet another overly stylish action movie that’s better when everyone is fighting rather than talking. I had a hard time staying interested, and I’m not sure if that would have been exacerbated if I saw this on the big screen vs. a screener. Unfortunately, you'll only get to see on the big screen in certain regions, because it's mainly being released VOD.
Hitting Netflix on Friday after a week at New York’s Paris Theater is Sara Colangelo’s drama WORTH (Netflix), starring Michael Keaton, Stanley Tucci, and Amy Ryan, which premiered all the way back in January 2020 at the Sundance Film Festival. In the movie, Keaton plays Kenneth Feinberg, an opera loving lawyer and college professor who is commissioned to start the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, which has to come up with the amount of money that the families of those who died in the terrorist attacks will receive.
As you can probably expect, this movie is a laugh a minute… no, I’m kidding, this is a well-written and acted, but also often rather dry drama that’s about a serous topic, but it also feels like it comes so late after 9/11 that it doesn’t feel as relevant anymore, even with the anniversary coming up soon.
The movie is very much a spotlight for Keaton, who sports a heavy Massachusetts accent but still delivers a solid performance as the man with the unenviable task of trying to calculate the payouts for the people who lost loved ones in the 9/11 attacks. But Keaton doesn’t just deliver himself, he also brings out the best from everyone else in the cast, not too surprising from Ryan or Tucci, but there are also lots of pleasant surprises, including Shunori Ramathan and some of the actors playing the people who lost family members.
More than anything else, the movie is very much about the excellent script by Max Borenstein (who mostly has written a bunch of Godzilla and King Kong movies, oddly enough), and in that sense, it reminds me of Tom McCarthy’s Spotlight or the recent The Report, which are both solid movies but also very dialogue-driven ensemble dramas. Colangelo does a fine job with the film's pacing, which much have been a difficult task.
The only real problem with Worth is that it's so filled with crying and drama it's pretty hard to take for two hours straight. Basically, it’s one of those very good movies that you really have to be in the right headspace to get through it.
Michelle Civata's THE GATEWAY (Lionsgate) is a crime-thriller set in rural St. Louis with Shea Whigham playing Parker, a social worker who is trying to protect his client, a single mother (Olivia Munn) with a young daughter, whose husband was just paroled from jail with a drugdealer (Frank Grillo) trying to get him back on the payroll.
I wasn't sure about this one at least as it started, even with such a solid cast, which includes Bruce Dern as Park's estranged father, and it certainly started out a bit erratic with some scenes and characters working better than others. What works in the movie's favor is Whigham is such a good actor who rarely gets juicy roles like this one where he can be at the center of the story, and The Gateway shows that maybe this shouldn't be.
Despite a woman as director and co-writer, the whole thing comes off as fairly macho, clearly influenced by filmmakers like Scorses, but the fact that there's heart and real characters at the center of the movie that doesn't offer some degree of action -- gunfights, car chases and such -- does make The Gateway far better than it could have been.
Unfortunately, things start to fall a bit in the last act, although there are some great scenes between Whigham and Dern, and I generally like what the movie is trying to say about family. Because of that, The Gateway ends up being a decent indie crime thriller that doesn't veer too far from others but gives Wigham a long-deserved leading role to show his stuff.
The Gateway will open in select theaters, and be available via Apple TV and other digital platforms Friday and then be available on DVD and Blu-ray on Tuesday, September 7.
Sean King O’Grady’s thriller WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING (IFC Midnight) stars Sierra McCormick as teenager Melissa, who ends up trapped with her family in a house after trying to shelter from a storm… and boy, did this movie remind me of this awful recent movie called John and the Hole that IFC released last month. And this one really isn’t much better, despite starring great actors like Vinessa Shaw and Pat Healy.
Honestly, I have no idea why anyone would read the script by Max Booth III (based on his own novella, no less) and think, “Boy, this would make an interesting movie,” but this is the age we live in where everyone is trying to make something cool and woke for the kiddies, and in this case that comes in the form of Melissa’s goth girlfriend Amy (Lisette Alexis) who shows up (in flashback) as so that they can do some incantations which may be causing all the weirdness. It’s as if the filmmakers thought that throwing in a bit of The Craft might save it.
I probably was most disappointed by Healy, since I’m such a fan of his work, but he isn’t given much to do except rant and rave and yell a lot, and he really comes off like an asshole, which is not a great look for him.
O’Grady throws all sorts of things at the family like a not particularly scary stupid looking rattlesnake that has them screaming horribly and some kind of… werewolf or something? (I don’t know ‘cause we never see it. We just see its tongue which Melissa rips out.) Honestly, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen worse acting, which just makes the family even more annoying.
With a really stupid premise that is barely able to carry a movie, if you’re gonna call your movie We Need to Do Something, then for EFF’s sake, DO SOMETHING! Man, this movie frustrated the hell out of me.
Also out on Friday is the anthology film, YEAR OF THE EVERLASTING STORM (NEON), which features an amazing roster of filmmakers, including David Lowery, director of the recent The Green Knight, Jafar Panahi, Anthony Chen, Laura Poitras (CITIZEN4), Apichatpong Weerasethakul, and others, taking a semi-documentary approach to share their thoughts on living in a pandemic… I watched the Panahi and Chen segments but never got to the rest, but if I do, I'll add my thoughts on the film as a whole when I have a chance. The movie opens at the IFC Center in New York this Friday and then in Los Angeles at the Laemlle Royal next Friday.
I wasn’t able to get to Safy Nebbou’s WHO YOU THINK I AM (Cohen Media), based on the best-selling novel from Camille Laurens, but it stars the great Juliette Binoche, a single mom and middle-aged professor who is ghosted her 20-something lover so she creates a fake Facebook profile for 24-year-old avatar named “Clara” who is friended by her ex’s roommate. This opens at the Quad Cinema in New York on Friday as well as in L.A. at the Landmark, and I hope to get to watch it soon.
Another movie I’ve been looking forward to seeing since it premiered at Sundance but just haven’t found the time is Lyle Mitchell Corbine Jr.’s WILD INDIAN (Vertical), starring the great Michael Greyeyes as a native American man who decades earlier covered up a classmate's murder, but now has to deal with a man who wants vengeance for the secret he's trying to keep as he tries to protect his wife (Kate Bosworth) and boss (Jesse Eisenberg) from that secret. Sounds pretty amazing and man, I wish I could just fit in more movies with everything I have going on right now.
Chad Michael Murray plays the title role in Daniel Farrands' TED BUNDY: AMERICAN BOOGIEMAN (Voltage/Dark Star PIctures), which hits VOD and DVD this Friday, but unlike last week's No Man of God, which deals with Bundy already in prison, it deals with Bundy still on the prowl and the law enforcement agents who eventually brought him down including detective Kathleen McChesney (Holland Roden) and rookie FBI profiler Robert Ressler (Jake Hays). I haven't had a chance to watch this yet, but it would have been nice if they released the two movies in chronological order, no?
A great doc that played at the Tribeca Festival a couple months back and will hit Showtime this Friday is Sacha Jenkins’ BITCHIN’: THE SOUND AND FURY OF RICK JAMES (Showtime), an absolutely fascinating look at the controversial funk and soul star whose catchy dance music of the '70s led to drugs and worse offenses in subsequent years. This is a fantastic doc that I wish I could watch again, but I don't have Showtime. Waugh waugh...
Others that came out this week or weekend:
AFTERLIFE OF THE PARTY (Netflix)
STEEL SONG (Gravitas Ventures)
SAVING PARADISE (Vertical)
Next week, the new horror movie from James Wan, Malignant, as well as Paul Schrader's The Card Counter, which I think might be going wide next week, too.
