Ishbel MacAskill often referred to as The Gaelic Diva passed away on March 31st 2011.

Ishbel was born in my hometown of Loanhead on the outskirts of Edinburgh in 1941 and was put up for adoption. Her adoptive Parents, Allan and Christina MacIver, natives of Broker, Isle of Lewis. When she was 12, she moved with her family to Stornoway, the Island’s capital, where she attended the Nicolson Institute.

Her numerous radio and television performances and countless world-wide live appearances established her position as probably one of the best internationally-known Gaelic singers.

Ishbel’s singing took her to venues throughout the UK, Ireland, Europe, Asia, Canada, USA and Australia. Her recordings are always in demand at home and abroad and significantly, sell to people who have never before heard the Gaelic language. Whether her audience was Gaelic speaking or not her English introductions to these centuries old songs of love, war, sea and landscape, exile and life itself made each one a memorable experience.

Her profound respect for the tradition was gently balanced by a humorous irreverence in her witty observations on the reality of Highland life and culture. Are there specific restrictions on importing animals from out of the US? Like, can I import one animal but not another unless I get certain paperwork? I’ve searched around for answers but I’m completely lost.

You can import and export domestic animal remains to and from the US without paperwork. The only exception are dog and cat fur products. Any and all dog or cat fur products cannot be imported, exported, sold, or traded within the US due to the Dog and Cat Protection Act. Skulls and bones are ok though, as well as wet preserved specimens.

All wildlife requires customs forms and import paperwork, which you need to be in contact with a customs broker to handle all the paperwork and fees. One of the exceptions to this is if you're bringing a tanned hide or cleaned skull of species that is allowed to be imported in personal belongings. For example, I bought a tanned red kangaroo hide in Australia and brought it in my personal luggage. They're allowed to be exported/imported so once it was checked though customs it was fine.

There are some other exceptions if the remains are documented for non-commercial use or scientific research, but the best and safest way is to have the animals handled through a broker. If customs decides that anything looks suspicious or doesn't have proper paperwork, then the remains can be seized by customs and you can end up in a lot of legal trouble with some nasty fines.

So generally speaking, if it's a domestic animal then it's fine (aside from dog and cat fur products). Anything else has to be imported through a broker.

Being the Archbishop of Canterbury used to look like quite the cushy gig. Sure, the mitre is a bit ridiculous and overseeing royal weddings, with live global TV audiences in the billions, would be a tad nerve wracking.

Still, it still looked like a relatively plum appointment, what with getting the keys to Lambeth Palace and never having to run a parish bake sale ever again.

So let’s just pity Justin Welby who got the posting in 2013.

Welby will go down in history as the first leader of the Church of England to become embroiled in controversy after an Oprah Winfrey TV special and the first leader of a world religion to be called in to stymie a possible Netflix story arc.

(Hard to see Pope Francis taking a break from his day job to have to deal with the cardinals wanting to make a reality show …)

According to the Mail, His Majesty is of the view that if the Sussexes stayed away from London it could end up being a “greater distraction” than having the duo in the royal family’s midst, which is why Charles “is prepared to make concessions to persuade them to attend.

On the table for Harry is “a high-profile seating position in the Abbey or an informal assurance that he will be able to keep his titles as an inducement to attend”.

The big hitch to the King’s plan comes in the form of heir to the throne and the Bane of Necklaces Everywhere, Prince William, who reportedly has qualms over his dear old Dad’s scheme. The Mail has reported that Willy “fears that unless Harry’s visit is tightly scripted, he could steal the limelight by, for example, going on a walkabout in a deprived London borough with Meghan”.

(A quick side note: If two people can “steal the limelight” away from a once-in-a-generation event by doing nothing more grandiose than wandering about Dagenham while people make TikToks then it does not say much about the robustness of the new King’s reign.)

Which is to not say that the Duke and Duchess of Netflix are keen as mustard to play ball and are currently teaching their children Archie and Lili how to bow and curtsy or the best way to get a regal Jack Russell off your leg.

That Tony Robbins assertiveness podcast that Harry has been listening to (I’m guessing) would seem to have worked, because, per the Mail’s sources, the Duke wants certain “terms and conditions” to be met in return for their presence.

A source has told the Mail: “All the indications are that Harry is being advised to agree to nothing at this stage and ‘play it long’ right up to the last minute, which is making negotiations with him very difficult.

“Harry’s camp made clear that the idea that he would just attend the coronation and behave himself but then be stripped of his titles was a total non-starter.

“While he might decide at some point to discard his titles of his own volition, he objects to the idea of being forcibly stripped of them.”

(Well, of course he might ‘object’ to them possibly losing their Sussex titles given it is not in their interest to find out if Netflix is quite so generous if the cheques suddenly have to be made out to Mr and Mrs Mountbatten-Windsor.)

So let’s zoom out here, bigger picture time and all that.

For Charles, this looks like he is pursuing a containment strategy, some way of minimising the chances of the Sussexess staging some sort of TV tantrum right at exactly the moment Justin is anointing him with oil or he is reciting the coronation oath.

His calculation would seem to be that it is safer to make a few “concessions” and keep the Sussexes’ sweet rather than having to worry about what they might be getting up to in Montecito.

But can or will this appeasement of sorts work? If the King decides to go down this road, would it ultimately work in his favour or could it go down about as well as that time the Archbishop’s chaplain Cardinal Thomas Wolsey failed to help Henry VIII get that divorce he wanted from wife number one?

In the last 12 months we have had two major royal events – the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee four-day celebration and then her funeral in September – both of which Harry and Meghan not only attended but were on their best behaviour.

They did not stage any rogue walkabouts in Brixton or give any interviews to roving breakfast presenters or do anything so controversial as blink at an inopportune moment. Gold stars all around!

And yet, looking back at both of these historic outings and Harry and Meghan’s very presence hovered, blimp-like, over proceedings. Their very presence back behind Palace gates and The Firm’s handling of their return were huge stories.

After all, what would you prefer to read about? A septuagenarian taking part in a lengthy (well, hour-long) religious ceremony or the latest glamorous instalment in this royal soapie? In getting to watch as the Prince and Princess of Wales clap eyes on the Sussexes for the first time since Spare and all of its juicy, often gossipy, family revelations landed?

The more I think about it, the more I wonder, can Charles win the fight for public and media interest if they go?

Let’s imagine that, come May, Harry and Meghan jet into London and things go swimmingly. We would end up with photos of the Duke and Duchess within lipgloss-sharing distance of the Waleses and no one throwing a punch or bursting into histrionic tears.

Headline writers the length and breadth of Fleet Street would start to busily work on their ‘brothers united’ puns and have to shelve that old favourite, ‘Splitting heirs.’ It would be the biggest – or at least the most clicked, read and shared – story of the day.

Or, let’s imagine that things go the other way and that having the Waleses and the Sussexes sharing a pew would trigger a repeat of Commonwealth Day 2020 when the froideur between the two couples was so obvious they could have triggered a new Ice Age. It would be the biggest – or at least the most clicked, read and shared – story of the day.

It is not as if Harry and Meghan are shy about popping up on TV screens and sharing their feelings about his family.

Harry and Meghan have the King over something of a barrel. (Only the very best sort of barrel of course for His Majesty though.) Spare would seem to have hit its mark and the way things stand now, with just over three months to go, is that Charles is willing to capitulate in order to avoid further dramahhhhh.

it  all  began  in  ms.  kelly's  freshman  english  class  .  or  ,  at  least  the  english  period  .  while  mark  reid  and  jessica  beachley  were  both  home  -  grown  queensland  aussies  ,  and  proud  ,  they  had  never  ran  into  each  other  before  their  freshman  year  of  high  school  .  or  ,  actually  ,  it  was  the  end  of  their  freshman  year  .  ms.  kelly  ,  the  young  new  english  teacher  ,  had  decided  to  start  up  a  new  project  her  first  year  of  teaching  .  pen  pals  between  all  her  english  periods  .  she  wrote  down  all  her  students  names  on  a  piece  paper  ,  cut  them  up  ,  put  them  in  a  hat  ,  plucked  them  one  by  one  and  assigned  them  as  pen  pals  for  the  school  year  .  it  was  randomized  ,  even  by  gender  ,  and  no  -  one  would  be  the  wiser  of  who  they  were  writing  to  and  vice  versa  .  they  would  only  be  able  to  address  each  other  by  nick  -  names  that  could  not  hint  to  their  identity  .  by  a  wave  of  luck  ,  it  just  so  happened  mark  and  jessica  got  paired  .  throughout  the  year  ,  the  pen  pals  became  the  best  of  friends  .  ranting  ,  venting  ,  sharing  ,  every  piece  of  themselves  with  the  other  .  it  was  only  at  the  end  of  their  freshman  year  ,  the  day  before  summer  break  ,  that  ms.  kelly  revealed  who  the  partners  were  .

freckles  ,  otherwise  known  as  jessica  beachley  ,  was  the  classic  girl  next  door  .  known  around  town  as  the  surfer  tom  -  boy  girl  ,  she  always  had  a  bright  smile  on  her  face  and  a  swim  -  suit  underneath  ,  happy  and  loud  everywhere  she  went  .  attracting  attention  no  matter  the  place  ,  for  her  good  looks  and  sunshine  personality  .  in  high  school  ,  she  did  academically  well  but  focused  all  of  her  efforts  out  of  the  classroom  on  the  waves  .  it  was  no  surprise  to  anyone  when  she  decided  to  take  surfing  seriously  ,  a  mostly  male  dominated  sport  at  the  time  ,  and  ended  up  winning  four  national  titles  and  twenty  -  two  asp  women's  championship  tours  .  she  transformed  women's  surfing  ,  retiring  after  having  her  third  child  and  instead  stepping  into  a  global  brand  ambassador  role  .  

cherry  ripe  ,  otherwise  known  as  mark  reid  ,  was  the  stereotypical  athlete  with  a  too  big  ego  and  a  restless  body  .  known  around  town  as  the  troublemaking  quarterback  ,  a  love  -  able  golden  retriever  who  would  often  chase  his  own  tail  just  for  the  hell  of  it  .  he  did  academically  well  ,  and  while  he  was  gifted  at  football  and  pursued  it  in  college  ,  there  was  no  chance  of  going  pro  for  him  because  he  wouldn't  dare  think  of  leaving  his  hometown  .  instead  ,  his  future  consisted  of  being  a  father  to  three  and  a  real  estate  broker  who  did  well  enough  to  support  his  family  .  though  ,  if  anyone  asked  ,  he'd  often  claim  his  high  school  girlfriend  turned  wife  as  the  money  maker  in  the  family  with  a  proud  grin  on  his  face  .

after  ms.  kelly  revealed  the  freshman  year  pen  pals  ,  mark  reid  took  a  chance  and  approached  jessica  beachley  .  or  well  ,  he  found  out  her  address  from  others  in  the  town  and  ended  up  continuing  their  pen  pal  letters  by  sticking  one  in  her  mailbox  the  first  day  of  summer  vacation  .  jessica  ,  thinking  the  gesture  was  cute  ,  continued  their  letters  still  signing  off  with  their  pen  pals  nick  -  names  .  though  they  knew  of  each  others  identity  ,  it  wasn't  until  one  week  before  sophomore  year  that  the  pair  decided  to  hang  out  in  person  .  from  then  on  ,  mark  was  hooked  on  her  and  chased  her  relentlessly  while  jessica  attempted  to  keep  them  in  the  friend  -  zone  because  she  had  too  many  goals  in  life  and  didn't  want  to  be  tied  down  by  a  relationship  .  in  the  end  ,  the  summer  break  before  junior  year  ,  the  pair  began  dating  .  the  rest  is  history  .  to  this  day  ,  mark  calls  jessica  freckles  .

after  winning  her  first  pro  event  in  australia  ,  jessica  gave  birth  to  the  first  reid  child  .  a  girl  who  was  a  lovely  as  could  be  .  and  while  many  believed  that  would  be  the  end  of  her  career  ,  she  returned  to  surfing  just  a  month  later  reaching  the  final  in  japan  .  three  years  later  ,  she  would  once  again  give  birth  .  this  time  ,  a  reid  boy  ,  kieran  .  throughout  the  pregnancy  she  obtained  various  health  conditions  ,  especially  back  pains  ,  that  would  three  years  later  ,  two  years  after  the  birth  of  the  third  reid  baby  ,  retire  her  from  the  game  .  

the  reid  family  was  a  happy  one  .  the  first  born  energetic  ,  firm  ,  brilliant  .  the  second  born  spontaneous  ,  wild  ,  joyous  .  the  third  born  quieter  ,  intelligent  ,  a  master  -  mind  .  the  three  filled  their  child  -  hood  home  to  the  brim  with  moments  that  would  be  engrained  in  all  their  beings  .

from  a  young  age  ,  kieran  reid  took  after  his  mother  .  drawn  to  the  beach  as  a  child  ,  he  often  spent  his  days  on  the  back  of  his  mothers  board  or  playing  in  the  sand  .  never  once  afraid  of  the  water  ,  instead  daring  enough  to  go  further  out  with  each  step  he  took  .  with  his  mothers  help  ,  he  first  rode  on  a  surfboard  when  he  was  six  months  old  .  by  the  age  of  five  ,  he  was  surfing  on  his  own  .  since  the  reid's  believed  in  allowing  their  children  to  decide  their  own  fate  ,  they  supported  him  heavily  when  he  stated  he  wanted  to  make  a  career  out  of  surfing  .  at  the  age  of  thirteen  ,  kieran  became  the  youngest  surfer  ever  to  compete  in  the  vans  triple  crown  of  surfing  ,  which  consists  of  three  big  -  wave  surfing  contests  .  he  had  previously  won  five  amateur  awards  .  while  he  did  not  pass  the  first  round  in  the  vans  triple  ,  he  had  scored  higher  than  a  professional  surfer  twenty  years  his  senior  .  kieran  would  later  go  on  to  win  the  vans  world  cup  of  surfing  at  nineteen  and  twenty  -  one  ,  the  youngest  contestant  to  win  the  honor  .

because  of  his  boy  -  ish  charms  and  handsome  looks  ,  kieran  was  selected  to  be  an  ambassador  and  model  for  various  surfing  companies  throughout  the  world  .  though  he  began  in  australia  ,  as  he  competed  in  areas  such  as  hawaii  and  california  ,  his  resume  continued  to  grow  .  it  had  just  happened  that  while  in  california  ,  while  on  shoot  for  a  surfing  board  and  suit  company  ,  the  photographer  sent  some  of  his  raw  photos  to  a  colleague  who  ended  up  wanting  to  book  him  for  luxury  brands  .  he  then  began  modeling  and  shooting  commercials  for  various  brands  .  at  fifteen  ,  an  agent  reached  out  to  his  parents  about  wanting  to  book  him  for  an  up  -  coming  show  in  hollywood  .  though  he  had  been  flattered  ,  and  believed  it  to  be  way  over  his  head  ,  he  declined  due  to  wanting  to  focus  on  his  surfing  career  .  throughout  the  years  more  offers  trickled  through  ,  he  declined  them  all  with  a  true  apology  .

at  eighteen  years  old  ,  while  riding  a  wave  at  banzai  pipeline  in  hawaii  ,  kieran  suffered  from  a  broken  wrist  ,  broken  arm  ,  and  ankle  ligament  tear  .  while  it  didn't  end  his  surfing  career  ,  he'd  later  go  on  to  win  titles  and  acclaims  ,  it  put  things  into  perspective  for  him  .  he  decided  to  take  a  chance  and  take  up  one  of  the  acting  auditions  requested  of  him  .  easily  charmed  by  the  australian  boy  ,  their  only  complaint  was  the  thick  accent  rolling  off  his  tongue  .  pushed  into  dialect  classes  after  ,  and  learning  how  to  hone  an  american  accent  ,  he  quickly  began  his  acting  career  .

easily  casted  into  the  teenage  heart  -  throb  roles  ,  his  first  role  was  for  a  disney  channel  movie  as  troy  bolton  in  high  school  musical  .  though  no  one  had  expected  it  ,  it  had  done  tremendously  well  and  would  later  go  on  to  become  a  series  of  three  movies  which  would  rocket  his  career  into  becoming  the  face  of  other  franchises  .  juggling  acting  ,  modeling  ,  and  surfing  had  proven  to  be  more  difficult  than  he  believed  and  led  to  another  round  of  injuries  for  the  male  later  on  in  his  career  .  in  december  2019  ,  kieran  qualified  for  the  2020  olympics  despite  missing  much  of  the  2019  world  surf  league  men's  championship  tour  due  to  an  acl  injury  .  at  the  olympics  ,  he  was  eliminated  in  the  quarterfinal  round  to  japan's  kanoa  igarashi  .  retiring  from  surfing  in  2021  ,  after  another  getting  injured  at  the  boost  mobile  margaret  river  pro  ,  he  had  missed  majority  of  the  season  and  decided  to  hang  it  up  for  good  .  now  only  focusing  on  acting  and  modeling  as  his  career  .  though  he  would  always  reference  australia  as  home  ,  and  has  grown  attached  to  hawaii  throughout  the  years  of  competition  ,  his  residence  has  been  in  california  for  the  last  nine  years  .
