Not really directly related to the previous reblog, but I feel like classical/traditional (or really just like, pre 1920s architecture tbh ) vs contemporary architecture is something that a lot of people on the left kind of get stuck on in the wrong way. Even if reactionaries fetishize "traditional" architecture, I don't think it's fair to blame it's widespread esteem on purely reactionary tendencies among the general populace. There has been a variety of studies that have found evidence that certain types of architectural environments can have positive or negative neurologic, psychological or sociological effects, and even without I think it's worth considering the fact that if a great majority of people claim to like a particular aesthetic more , and that is the aesthetic that shapes the environments within which they live, then maybe they should be able to live in an aesthetic environment that has what they want, so long as it is something achievable with other goals.
There is a particular affinity that socialists often have for like, specific styles of modern (although not really contemporary anymore) architecture, especially brutalism, in spite of their more general negative reputations. Part of this comes from an affection towards the specific social forms which were being achieved thru buildings in that style; large scale , inexpensive social housing, public infrastructure and schools , etc. Brutalism, at least some examples of it, also has an advantage of being relatively unobtrusive because of it's rough and stone like exterior , many brutalist buildings blend into the urban form more easily than other types of modern construction. That said , while its suitability to utilitarian function was one of Brutalism's advantages , it was never uniquely suited to it, and in fact many brutalist buildings were flawed from the start (even compared to other contemporary buildings) and the move away from Brutalism is as much a consequence of those flaws as well technological advancements in production that made Brutalism no longer the most economical way to build as it was its unpopularity among the public and reactionaries.
Any type of architecture in general is eventually going to have to come to grips with the fact that the, unless there are unforeseen drastic changes, the world is probably going to reach it's max population within the lifespan of a lot of new construction. In many industrialized countries, the population has already plateaued, in some it has already started to decline. The increasing trend towards urbanization and density will mean that this effect will have a significant lag in many cities, but eventually (probably in the next 20-30 years in some places) architects will have to contend with the fact that the economic model of building construction is going to permanently change. Obviously the initial impact is going to be in residential architecture, i.e. at some point there will be basically zero demand for truly *new* housing, and almost all of the demand will be for *better* housing. But the economic effects of the end up population growth will also mean that there will a be decline in demand and capacity for all types of new construction, and what is made will likely have to be much more sustainable and longer lasting than what was made with the assumption of endless future growth. Personally , at least, I think if they are building what could very likely be the permanent or near permanent urban form, then its essential that is designed in an aesthetic style that is pleasing to the future generations that will live in it as well.
#architecture#Brutalism#I actually like brutalism#Or rather I like some brutalist buildings#But it's a very flawed architectural paradigm#I thought the brutalist buildings at my community college were pretty#But I wouldn't want to live in a brutalist building or in a whole neighborhood of brutalist architecture#Unless it was the best option I could afford
