Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, Phedre's "I fucked up" song from Rameau's Hippolyte et Aricie. I actually imprinted on Bernarda Fink's recording, but that's harder to find. One of those rare pieces of music that makes me wish I drove, so I could roll around with my windows open scream-singing along with this and make other people listen to French baroque opera for a minute.

The last movement of Michel-Richard DeLalande's De Profundis. I want this played at my memorial service because it is six and a half minutes of gorgeousness that probably no one there will have heard before, and I want very badly for them to hear it.

To help make up for yesterday’s delinquency, for my second selection in today’s celebration of the works of George Frideric Handel, I’ll give you perhaps my very favorite aria of his, “Mio cor, che mi sai dir?” from the opera Rinaldo. In this aria, Goffredo has reached the end of his rope as he has not only lost his daughter to the machinations of the enemy, but now the hero Rinaldo as well, whose poor judgement has led him to jump into the sea at the call of a siren. This frantic, raw aria is the first time we really see Goffredo lose his cool in this opera, and the result is both heart-wrenching and exciting, especially when sung by someone like the incredible Bernarda Fink.

The English translation of the preceding recitative is extremely loose, as you’ll notice. The aria is in the original Italian, sung by one of our outgoing seniors, Angela Oldham Barca (18). Chausson et autres, par Gilles Thieblot

Un peu de pub pour mon camarade Gilles Thieblot , prof de musique, musicologue, qui a écrit des petits livres (170 pages) que tout mélomane sérieux devrait posséder. (La preuve : je les ai !) Il a déjà sorti chez Bleu Nuit éditeur : Lekeu, Lalo, Bizet, Falla. Et le dernier en date : Chausson. Tableau synoptique à la fin du livre. Biographie et discographie sélectives, avec même un renvoi vers des émissions de radio. Entre biographie et analyse musicale, partitions à l'appui, c'est une excellent introduction à la vie et à l'oeuvre d'un compositeur. Il y avait la petite collection Solfèges du Seuil, il faut aussi compter la collection Horizon, de Bleu nuit éditeur. (91 titres parus.)

J'ai réécouté la superbe Chanson perpétuelle en lisant l'analyse associée, page 154. Gilles souligne : « Volontaire ou pas, mais placée fort à propos, sous les mots « J'en eu un grand frémissemenrt / Et puis je ne sais plus comment, / Il est devenu mon amant, » une furtive citation du motif du désir de Tristan. » Puis : « L'accord de Tristan » accompagne les mots « Je ne dormais bien qu'en ses bras. » » Ce qui rappelle l'inspiration très Wagnérienne de Chausson. Même sans aimer le premier (c'est mon cas) on peut aimer le second.

Au disque, chercher la très belle version de Bernarda Fink, avec l'Ensemble Ader, chez Accord. Pas trouvé sur Youtube, mais Sandrine Piau c'est très bien aussi :

Hello followers! As we wrap up our season here at Musica in Extenso, I am as always about to head into my teen opera workshop’s summer production. This year we’re presenting our (fairly radical) adaptation of Handel’s Rinaldo. So for a taste of where my mind is right now, here’s one of my favorite arias from that opera, “Mio cor, che mi sai dir?” sung here by the incredible Bernarda Fink.
