Comoedia, 5 February 1934 (note the picture of Harry Baur by the masthead!) So I learned that the 1934 Les Mis film premiered two nights before a far-right anti-government riot! And you can feel that there was a crisis about to happen in this account of the movie's premiere:
A rough start to the night: there’s the taxi driver’s strike and there’s the parliamentary crisis. The latest information passed from mouth to mouth and most journalists arrived late, bearing the most recent news. “So Emile Fabre is jumping ship?” [Fabre was the director of the Comédie-Française and was apparently being pressured to leave.] “It’s a scandal!” “It’s disgraceful!” “What folly!” “And who is replacing him?” “George Thomé.” [Thomé was a musician as well as the former director the Sûreté.] “Seriously?! They’re going to be cuffing the Comedie-Francaise.” Emile Fabre makes his entrance, followed by his charming daughter. He is just as soon surrounded and interrogated. “I don’t understand! I don’t understand!” “No one understands.” “There is too much to understand.” Our editor-in-chief, who has not always been fond of Emile Fabre, is spotted by his side; he shakes his hand cordially and I note that Pierre Lazareff [editor-in-chief of Paris-Soir] notes this effusive sympathy. A political star enters!...M. [François] Piétri [briefly the Minister of Finance]…thoughtfully and hurriedly, he passes by on swift feet which recently exercised a wise retreat that was, if I dare say, a step ahead of wisdom. He joins Mme. Piétri….It’s impossible to get him to open up!... Caught up in the commotion of the crowd, I hear this brief dialog between a political columnist and a deputy: “And how are your ‘misérables’ doing?” “They are waiting for their Monseigneur Myriel!” The huge Marignan theater is too cramped for this crowd of guests. Luckily Jean-José Frappa and his second in command, Mme. Audibert, thought of everything, took care of everything… And everyone is able to get to the coat check and find his place easily. Because the taxi strike and political events delayed hundreds of people, who then arrived all at once and with haste, this was not an easy task. Who was there? Tout-Paris...I randomly noted with my pencil: Messueirs Paul Abram, Achard, De Adler, Berneuil, Archimbaud, André Aron, Arnaud, Louis Aubert, Aubin, Kujay, Kertée, Azaïs, Bacré, Barthe, Baschet, Baudelocque, Harry-Baur, Bavelier, Robert de Beauplan, Antonin Bédier, Pierre Benoit, Mme Spinelly, Charles Delac and Marcel Vandal, Léon Benoit-Deutsch, André Lang, René Lehmann, Bellanger, Mag Bernard, Tristan Bernard, Jean-Jacques Bernard, Louis Bernard, Dr. Etiënne Bernard (all the Bernards!)...Bernheim, Bernier, Guilaume Besnard, Bétove, Bizet, Blumsteien, Mme Rocher, Boesflug, Pierre de la Boissière, Bollaert, Bouan, Boucher, Robert Bos, Pierre Bost, Paul Brach, Henry Roussell, Charles Burguet, Pierre Brisson, Simone Cerdan, Henry Clerc, Albert Clemenceau, Pière Colombier, Germaine Dulac,Henri Diamant-Berger, Julien Duvivier,Jean Epstein, Fernand Gregh, Mary Glory, René Heribel, Tania Fédor, Alice Field, Jacqueline Francell, Mary Marquet, Florelle, Marguerite Moreno, Françoise Rosay, Becq de Fouquière, Jean Servais, Vidalin, Maria Vaisamaki, Orane Demazis, Rachel Deviry, Rosine Deréan, Jacques Deval, Christiane Delyne, Renée Devillers, Jean Chataigner, Germaine Dermoz, Léon Voltera, Robert Trébor, our director, Jean Laffray, Lucie Derain, Paul Gordeaux, Jean Narguet, Parlay, Suzet Maïs, Antoine Rasimi, Renée de Saint-Cyr, Jean Toulout, Mady Berry, Yolande Laffont, Jean Max, Parysis, Charles Gallo, Léo Poldès, Jean Fayard, Edmonde Guy, Mario Roustan, Paul Strauss, Cavillon, Emile Vuillermoz, Josselyne Gaël, Charles Vanel, S. E. Si Kaddour ben Gabhrit, the duke and duchess of Mortemart, Madame Henry Paté, Marcel Prévost, Louise Weiss, Alfred Savoir, Henri Duvernois, Paul Gémon, magistrate Maurice Garçon, magistrate Campinchi, Sylvette Fillâcier, Jean Heuzé, Pierre, Heuzé, Mona Goya, Simon-Cerf, W.E. Hœndeler, Georges Midlarsky, Michel, Nadine Picard….and others I must be forgetting…pardon me!....Silence!....
In the glow of the half-light from the screen….there are applause! Not since les Croix de bois has a movie been so highly anticipated and now it is time for the verdict….Raymond Bernard can be sure that the audience is rooting for him. Our eyes are full with light and pretty colors. This Paris night is practically magical…and departing from that magic, we are plunged into the great river of les Misérables, into the furious waters of this social storm. Luckily André Lang and Raymond Bernard have made the trip for us. What contrast! From the spectacle of an elegant and distinguished gathering, we move to the misfortunes of Jean Valjean.
The audience picks up on everything that could be an allusion to the present times. But of all these allusions, one stands out. It’s the lament of two gossips, at the moment when the barricades are rising. “What sad times!” “We’ve barely made it through the cholera…and here is the Republic!” Thunderous applause and mad laughter. When, on the barricades, the Republic calls on us to act, the spectators think of other promised actions which haven’t happened and they forget to applaud. But the whole audience is prodigiously virtuous; whenever a good deed is shown on the screen, when some sentence about the heart graces the white canvas, it is punctuated by applause. After the first film, stop!... Time to eat! There’s a mad dash to the punchbowl. In the haste of this day of crisis and running late, many in the audience did not have time for dinner….the buffet, in the blink of an eye, is emptied and the dry drinks make vindictive and impassioned discussions flow. High and low, here and there, everyone was speaking of the Parliment's chances and the intermission bell sounds in an atmosphere charged with electricity. The two other parts of the film, cut by another intermission, each end with a double ovation for Harry Baur, both in the lobby and in the theater. The little Gaby Triquet is passed from person to person towards a chocolate eclair, which she leaves a trace of on the cheeks of Harry Baur. And then as usual everyone rushes to the coat check. Then we go to the fifth floor of the Marignan building. There, in an unoccupied apartment, dinner waits for us. There are more than a thousand of us around little eight-person tables. Ten thousand meters of film, that will make you hungry! Three orchestras pour out waltzes, tangos, and other tunes, while the masters of the hotel fill up our cups. And that continued to six thirty in the morning, in an atmosphere of charming cordiality as each person attested to the pleasure of seeing French cinema accomplish such a feat. Bernard Natan and Raymond Bernard were too surrounded for me to speak to them. Besides, what could I say to them that they haven’t already heard ten times, a hundred times, a thousand times that evening, which was the apotheosis of cinema and of Les Misérables. -Jean-Pierre Liausu

Laissez-vous conter l’église Saint-Amans
Episode 1

A suivre…

Noir, Retro and Streamline/Modern Comics
Retro Comics in childhood
In childhood, when reading Metal Hurlant (the Latin version of Heavy Metal), I was exposed to many of the European comic artists. Some were either a noir, retro and/or streamline modern.
Of course that back then I didn’t realize it. In fact, I didn’t like much any kind of black and white comics, even if I did read them.
Still, I liked some of them, even the ones that didn’t rely heavier on the shading and chiaroscuro techniques that make a good noir comic.
When I was a kid, I liked anthology Franco-Belgian comics that now I realize are noir. When back then I tried to figure out why I liked them, I thought I liked them because of their retro and streamline modern styles.
My favorite bande dessinée (FB comics) artist is Denis Sire. Pity that most of his output is in French, a language that I still don’t command.
Pity that we lost him last month. Maybe now he is in a better existence, in a world featuring female persons that look more like the pin-up-like girls he used to draw than the women of the earth.
Denis Sire said that his main influences were the Will Eisner and Dave Stevens’s Bettie Page’s illustrations.
Sire’s illustrations of Lisa Bay attest to that statement.
The Metal Hurlant anthologies were I knew all of my favorite Europan comic artists was very noir. Even if it was an outfit owned by more SF-oriented authors, was the conduit for all those noir and retro artists to run the show, which they did.
Recent Noir and Retro Comics I read
I said in my previous post on horror comics that Hellblazer should be like scripture for those horror fans that read comics. Tonight I say the same for those who, like me, like a blend of horror with noir.
Some runs of Hellblazer (like for instance the one that Corben illustrated) can definitely be called horror noir.
I have read more than two-hundred issues of this series, and not a single run did let me down. Except maybe for Constantine’s season in Ireland. If that run was the less noir of all, I guess it was due to its hippy-flavored story and location.
That said, I want to mention Sin City, a comic that I didn’t put in my list of horror comics for obvious reasons. I thought of it, and realized, that even if minuscule if compared to other books, it has several horror elements.
I mean, besides the violence and gore, there is a certain creep factor to the Roark’s and their backstory.
Of all the noir comics I read, I must say Sin City is my favorite. Even if it lacks more of the supernatural and takes itself way too seriously, like I believe it does.
Going on a superhero tangent, let’s not forget Watchmen. This series has a noir run, which I haven’t read. But the original Watchmen series of around a dozen comics also integrates elements neo-noir to its story and art.
The Crow is neo-noir horror and each run works upon the original story with different characters. By the way, The Crow, Watchmen, and Sin City all have fantastic movie counterparts, that highly recommend watching to those who love film noir.
Last but not least, Lobster Johnson. It’s part of the Hellboy series and it's so heavily noir in its art that I’d say it’s my second favorite after Sin City.
Outro
But my retro love goes way back than streamline modern, noir and neo-noir styles. I also love everything belonging to the Gothic and Anglo styles. Specially Anglo style, I love everything retro in the Anglo sensibility.
By Anglo-retro I mean everything salvageable from the Elizabethan, Georgian, Regency and Victorian periods. But back to noir and retro.
I chose noir as a subject of study. Until I arrive at not just encyclopedic knowledge of it, but also some higher realization that I still don’t know what will be.
I made a search for story type noir in comics.org and got more than 1500 results. 1179 in English, so noir is popular, at least with artists, writers and publishing houses.
Comicbook realm.com gives 61 results for the query “noir”. I wonder why there’s such an imbalance between both sites, I’ll find that out.
I leave you with a piece of trivia about comics with noir stories in English. Based on a query in comics.org:
The oldest American Comic Books with a Noir Theme

Manhunt
The hand of fate

Test Drive Unlimited 3 Confirmed to Be in Development by KT Racing, Kylotonn
March 5, 2020 7:34 AM EST
Test Drive Unlimited 3 is possibly on the way and I’m excited.
Test Drive Unlimited was an open-world racing game that launched in 2006 and was developed by Eden Games. It allowed players to drive around a tropical island in a number of vehicles. In 2011, a sequel arrived and introduced more in-depth multiplayer features. In 2018, the servers shut down, and well, things have been quiet as to whether or not a third installment is to arrive in the future.
It seems as if Test Drive Unlimited 3 is in development but it’s being developed by a different studio, as subtly confirmed in an interview from GamesBeat who spoke with Benoit Clerc, Nancon’s head of publishing. “We bought five companies. But they represent eight studios.” Clerc begins when answering a question about Nancon’s acquisitions in 2018 and 2019.
“The first company is KT Racing, Kylotonn. They’re based in Paris and Lyon. They’re specialized in racing. They’re doing off-road racing with WRC (World Championship Rally), and they’re doing two-wheel racing with Isle of Man TT.”
Kylotonn has previously worked on FlatOut 4: Total Insanity, WRC 5, 6, 7, and 8, and V-Rally 4 to name a few. In 2016, Bigben acquired the Test Drive brand, later in 2018 they acquired Kylotonn.
“They’re currently working on our biggest project by far, which is the next Test Drive Unlimited game.” he mentions but doesn’t share any further details throughout the interview.
youtube
WccfTech brings up a rumor that hit Reddit 2 months ago from an apparent developer working at Ubisoft Paris who shared details of Test Drive Unlimted 3. Of course, take information from rumors with a pinch of salt, but so far, the leaker has accurately revealed that the game is published by Bigben Games and being developed by KT Racing, Kylotonn.
The map is said to be based somewhere in South America this time around and is to be bigger than Ubisoft’s The Crew with the team wanting to apparently make it roughly the same size as Fuel’s world. There might be around 90 vehicles at launch, but there are apparently licensing issues that might see the number drop.
Houses may make a return and the physics engine sounds like it’s being taken from WRC 8. Multiplayer looks to be a focus, and the game is rumored to release in late 2020. The leaker suggests that the game may be out later “looking at the current state of the game” and could be a PS5 and Xbox Series X title with PS4 and Xbox One being possible. It may also be heading to PC as an Epic Games Store exclusive for a year and will then hit Steam and Google Stadia.
According to comments from the leaker, they say”I havn’t [sic] actually seen the game myself” and that the game was in development in 2017 with a small team, and in 2018 the whole team started working on it.
I guess, if the 2020 release date is to be believed, we’ll see a trailer or an official announcement hit the internet at some point this year.

Nacon Revealed A New Test Drive Unlimited Game Is In The Works
Test Drive Unlimited, the long-dormant open-world racing game series that predates genre classics like Forza Horizon or Burnout Paradise, will make a return. Rumours and leaks have been swirling around of alleged Test Drive Unlimited 3, developed by KT Racing and published by Bigben.
But today, a new Test Drive Unlimited game has been confirmed to be in the works.
In an interview with VentureBeat, Nacon’s head of publishing Benoit Clerc have confirmed that they are indeed making a new entry, with KT Racing at the helm. This is the developers behind the official WRC games, among many other Nacon (previously Bigben) published games.
It’s just an off-the-cuff mention, as Benoit is listing all the studios and games under the Nacon banner. But it’s an interesting tidbit. Benoit describes the new Test Drive Unlimited as their “biggest project by far”.
The whole interview is also worth a read, as it talks about the recent rebrand of Bigben to Nacon, and how they are playing in the so-called AA gaming space, compared to the usual AAA and indie titles.
Nacon has a comparatively huge array or racing games coming, all covering various niches, just in 2020. We have strategic off-road racing traversing uneven surfaces (Overpass), a motorcycle game (TT Isle Of Man 2), and the recently announced monster truck sim, Monster Truck Championship. Now we can add an open-world arcade racer into that growing list as well.
