Each piece of food given is a blessing. A blessing by the Lord, and his Father. Each piece of clothing is God's charity upon him. With each blessing, he must keep in mind his own sins. He knew his sins in and out, his Father having reminded him time and time again. The things he need be wary of. His lack of restraint, his lack of manners, but most importantly his appearance. His existence was a punishment in itself. He would prove himself to his Father.

Methods, Blue Lines
This was the one I was excited for!!
So, the bell is ringing, but we're ignoring it for now to talk about places. We've discussed them a little before in call changes, but let's get them straight.
Each bell has a number, and each bell has a place. The number of the bell you ring will not change, it's like that bells name. The place of the bell will change.
Places are usually marked like '1st' or '2nd' rather than '1' or '2', and that's how I'll be referring to them.
Your place is essentially just when you ring in the order. The 2nds place bell rings second. The 1sts place bell leads, ringing first.
Now, when we were ringing call changes, we were swapping around the places of two bells at a time, and doing that with stretches of unchanged ringing in between.
What we're going to do now, is have most of the bells change their place on every stroke (each time the bell actually rings, handstroke and backstroke) in some kind of pattern. The bells are never actually going to stay in one place for very long. These are methods (in the loosest meaning of the term)
Here is where I bring in the Blue Line! This magical thing is like sheet music for bell ringers. It tells us the pattern of places our bell needs to ring in. It's one way to easily learn a new method.
A blue line graph can look like this:
(Images taken from the app 'Methodology', my lifesaver)
Each row is one 'change'. This graph shows us the changes made by the treble. We can see it starting in rounds, before moving out to 2nds place, then 3rds, and so on right out to 6ths. It stays there for a blow, before coming back in again. If we traced through every other number, we can see they'd do much the same thing.
This is what it looks like with every bell having it's own line:
(Image taken from the Association of Ringing Teachers website)
Now, this looks fairly straightforward. You only have to keep track of one of these lines, and you're basically just going up and down.
Here is another blue line graph:
(Image taken from the ringingmethods.co.uk site. Another very useful one)
Top left shows what one section of it looks like all together. From there, reading the chunks left to right, top to bottom, is one full 'Plain Course'
This is Canterbury Delight Minor. You'll see the treble, in red, does the same thing in each chunk. This is pretty standard for a method. But the 2, the blue line, is all over the place!
As I get into talking about methods, you're going to see these diagrams a lot as I explain what's going on, so get used to them.
Next up, we'll look at that first blue line graph again and work out what's really happening there. As an aside, at some point I'll give a very brief history on bell ringing as a whole, and a recap/dictionary of some of the terms we use.

Funny interaction time: someone said I had sexy hands. I asked what was sexy about them, they said the scars and callouses, said that they gave the impression of someone who worked with their hands, who was strong and manly.
The scars? Cats. The callouses? Bellringing. But yes I do know how to use a circ saw thankyou for noticing.

All he could do was hold onto the man who raised him. The Archdeacon; His master; His father. He did not speak for the longest time, a guttural sobbing being the only noise that could be produced in this moment. This long, horrific, moment. He knew he had limited time to relish in his masters embrace. Finally, he was able to form an apology.
"i'm sorry. i'm sorry. i am.. so sorry. forgive me. i won't ever leave again. i am safe here, not out there. you were right, master, you have always been right."
While the poor boy didn't necessarily always deserve mercy to be shown, the instinct to practice compassion toward the hunchback at certain times resided somewhere deep within the Archdeacon. It was a habit ... a duty ..... even a need at times and the man would be cruel and ignorant to ignore it and continue to deny him.
Dropping to the floor without a worry or care regarding his clothing or physical proximity to the wailing bellringer, the stoic male who hadn't said anything since first approaching, slowly scooped up the sobbing, deformed husk of Quasimodo before gently pulling him in to his body to cradle him - much like in a way that he had done when the boy was much younger. However, such an act of charity had still been far and few between.
While the boy's clear agony pained the Archdeacon, he had no intention of coddling the mongrel in any other way than this. In fact, if anything, Claude was only there to remind the boy once more ... again and again, that the world was cruel ... and he was the only one who could truly bring him comfort ..... and safety.

Alright, I’ve left some tools, high-quality wood, some preserves, a couple of books with wonderful illustrations, sewing supplies, a blanket, soap, candles, socks, underwear, mittens, a hat, bandages and rubbing alcohol, some fresh fruit, some dried fruit and meats, some drawing charcoal, a couple different kinds of tea, and a little bear made out of cloth. That’s all I can fit in the satchel. It’s at the bottom of the stairs on the left, I’ve placed it inconspicuously, but grab it quickly before anyone else does. 🤫 This is non-negotiable, consider it thanks from the city for ringing the bells 💙💚
Do you need anything else? If any of the clothes don’t fit I can get different ones.
... all of this. for me? i could not ask for anything else in a million years..
i went down to retrieve the satchel. i brought it back up with me. i do not know where to even begin with what i've received. .. some of these things i've never even seen before. all of it is such high quality- i don't know if i deserve to wear these clothes. i don't know if i deserve this food. i.. unfortunately don't think i can. my master- he'd get too suspicious. i am so eternally grateful, and since you say it is non.. negotiable, i will keep them stashed. perhaps some day i will be able to make use. in the meantime, i will make you something with this wood. please return tomorrow and check the same spot. you will see a gift.
...
the bell tower seems ever so bright tonight, thank you.

Bell control, rounds
Hello! I'm just about to ring and frankly this bit is pretty easy (in theory, takes a bit longer to do in practice) so let's make it quick.
Bell is ringing!! Yipee!!
Speed up? Sure! Take in rope/come up your rope/shorten your rope, and the many other ways ringers will tell you the same thing. This means: bring your hands up the tail end (rope part that you're holding) by a little bit.
When your hands go up for the backstroke, there's less rope for the bell to use to swing with, your body is keeping it from going that bit further up, so it doesn't swing as far, ringing faster. You also grab the sally higher up, which does the same thing. Don't let that bell get to the balance point!
Slow down? Hell yeah. Let out rope, move hands down tail end so bell has more space to swing, and get up to that balance point to linger. Catch sally slightly slower, and on both strokes be careful not to let it bump the stay because it'll come down pretty fast and that's not what we're trying to do here! Taking notes? Don't! You can't read them while ringing.
Now, you're probably not asking yourself what Rounds is, but I'm going to tell you anyway! Let's give all the bells a number. Lightest bell, highest pitch, is number 1. Each heavier bell gets a higher number. Remember this, it's about to come up a lot.
We're gonna assume our fictional bell tower has 6 bells. So our heaviest, lowest pitch bell is number 6.
In rounds, bells ring in this order:
123456
Descending scale!! That's it. This is where everything starts from. You follow the bell that rings just before you, and make small adjustments to your ringing speed to hopefully fit in just behind them.
And this repeats, again and again, until it doesn't. That's rounds, baby!
Anyways, I'm off, next few posts will be smaller stuff before I get into call changes. Might introduce you to the blue line!
