On Identifying as VS Being
Now and again a being will ask if there is a label that describes being alterhuman that isn't defined by identifying as. I'm not especially interested in the distinction. Arguably there isn't one. Nonetheless it's a thread of thought I'm interested in pulling.
Because identifying as and being does feel different, doesn't it? Identification is what one does, being is what one is; Identification is an act, being is a state.
In most alterhumans the act and the state are congruous. We identify because we are, we are because we identify. It isn't hard to conceive there is someone for whom this is incongruent.
I am a dragonborn, but identify as dragonkin. For whatever reason, these feel distinct to me.
Input and experience sharing is very welcome. I am very interested in hearing what people have to say.
#alterhuman#nonhuman#otherkin#therian#This doesn't get into the nuance of identity in this framework#Which is itself a state of being#and the result of identifying#Being a fictive my fictionfolk-ness feels very passive#The fictionkin in our system feel proactive in their identity#Bloodkin Babbling#Don't get caught up in the semantics in the use of alterhuman in the first sentence#I'm using it as a catch-all for whatever label is relevant
