More on the RvB Warriors AU
((other characters I forgot about/failed to mention earlier as well as Flyoming lore that includes important events))
Freckles: After Spitestar (Church) died, Heavyheart (Caboose) found an injured pitbull in the woods. He helped nurse the dog back to health, and eventually returned home with the canine. The entire clan lost their collective shit, but no one could really talk Heavyheart out of keeping him, so... he stays. He’s picked up a handful of words, but he can’t speak full cat yet. When the twolegs invade the BGC’s territory, Freckles ends up protecting a majority of the clan cats, staying behind with Thunderspot to fight off the twolegs. He’s thought dead (or captured) for a bit, but returns later on to help defeat Felix and Locus.
Lopez: Another dog, this one being much more aggressive towards everyone in the clan (he’s a mutt that was found as a puppy in the woods, abandoned by his owners). Crimsonfur claims to have “tamed him” but everyone knows that’s bullshit. He’s been known to actually help a few times, but he typically just scares off intruders and hangs out around camp. He’s learned to do a majority of the repairs around camp, so all the dens are in perfect condition when he’s around. Currently MIA, but he’ll come back... he always does.
Sheila: A kittypet that occasionally visited the BGC’s territory, acting as an occasional confidant/mother figure to anyone who needed her. Eventually she passes away, having been incredibly old.
((I think that’s all the characters I haven’t covered that I know about (save for people from rvb14 and onward) but I’ll add more later probably))
MORE LORE UNDER CUT THAT I FEEL LIKE WRITING RIGHT NOW
- The shit that happens with Owlfur is Wild and I’m about to get into it (as well as get into Flowerstar and Owlfur’s relationship). - I’m Flyoming trash, so that ship still sails in this AU, but I’ve had to do some minor tweaking to the timeline since I made Tucktail Flowerstar’s son. (An easier solution would be to just take that out but Fuck That I love the “Tucker is Florida’s kid” theory). - Before PFL fell apart, Flowercreek became Very Aware that Jaggedstar was a dangerous individual, and he feared for his life. On top of that, he fell pregnant (he’s trans) and feared that Jaggedstar would kill his kits, as Flowercreek is the unofficial medicine cat of Motherclan, and although he never had proper training, he was worried it would still be considered inappropriate for him to have children. - At this point, Flowercreek had been secretly mated to Owlfur for several moons, so Owlfur was well aware that Flowercreek was pregnant and was excited for the kits to arrive. However, he also didn’t trust Jaggedstar to not harm his children, and agreed to help Flowercreek get the kits away from the clan once they were born. - The birth went badly. Flowercreek and Owlfur left the clan for the night once Flowercreek went into labor, and although Owlfur and him tried their best, two out of three of the kits perished, while the last one- the runt- barely survived. - Still, they had to get the poor kid to safety. After naming him Tuckkit, Flowercreek set out alone with the kit to find him a new home. Heading deeper into the woods, he ran into a young warrior; Crimsonfur. - Crimsonfur went to attack him, but upon realizing that this intruder had a kit, he begrudgingly stopped, and after having a long conversation with Flowercreek about his situation, he agreed to take Tuckkit with him back to the BGC clan. - After all of this, Flowercreek and Owlfur were absolutely Devastated, but life continued on. Several moons later, PFL finally fell apart. Flowercreek missed the entire fight, and came home to an empty, blood soaked camp, and no sign of Owlfur anywhere. - Depressed, Flowercreek left, and soon ran into another clan’s patrol... that included his beloved son! He recognized him right away, although the then Tuckpaw was unconvinced at first that this was his father. Still, the patrol agreed to bring Flowercreek back to camp with them for shelter. - It took a long while, but Tuckpaw soon accepted that Flowercreek was indeed his father, and once convinced he bombarded his dad with questions; who was his other parent? Where were they? What’s their name? Flowercreek answered vaguely, which frustrated Tuckpaw to no end and created a rift between them. - Despite knowing that they were related now, Tuckpaw struggled to build a relationship with Flowercreek. Even after his dad became leader, Tuckpaw could never really connect with him. - After Flowerstar’s death, Tucktail was left feeling guilty for not bonding with his father while he was alive, and also frustrated that he Still didn’t know who his other parent was.
Owlfur’s Lore
- During the PFL battle, Owlfur was badly injured by Losteye. He escaped in the midst of the infighting, running off to twoleg place. - He lived as a rogue for a long while, surviving off scraps and fighting off anyone who came too close. He mourned the loss of his mate- who he believed to be dead- but refused to give up on living. - He eventually ran into Cinderstalk and Losteye, and he attacked them both on sight. Despite Cinderstalk and Losteye working together, Owlfur managed to do fairly well, even killing Losteye in the process. Cinderstalk immediately chased him into BGC territory, where she delivered a blow she believed had killed him. This would not be the case. - Cinderstalk left Owlfur out to rot, but he miraculously survived. Later that same day, Fixcoat was foraging for herbs, only to find a mangled Owlfur. Feeling bad for the rogue, he dragged an unconscious Owlfur back to camp under the cover of night (as he knew this was Cinderstalk’s doing) and set him up in a concealed nest at the back of the medicine den, a curtain of leaves and vines keeping him hidden from sight. - One day while visiting the medicine den for something mundane, Tucktail heard a distinct coughing. He went to the back of the den to investigate, only to find a barely conscious cat. Deciding not to tell anyone that he knew about this strange rogue (not even Fixcoat), Tucktail began visiting Owlfur nightly. - At first, Owlfur refused to answer Tucktail’s rambling through the curtain, but after a long while, he decided to talk back. It started as small talk- where was he from? What’s his name?- that soon turned into deeper conversations. - Very soon, Owlfur realized Tucktail was his missing son, and his behavior changed entirely. He became much friendlier with Tucktail (he’d previously been very short with him), and began asking about his lineage. Hearing that the previous leader- Flowerstar- was his father only cemented Owlfur’s theory. - Unfortunately, this didn’t last. Owlfur soon recovered and left the clan without saying goodbye (he didn’t want Cinderstalk to find out he was alive and try to finish what she started). Tucktail was disappointed, but not overtly so (he had no idea at the time that Owlfur was his other father). - Rumors of an elusive white cat with black paws being active near the clan soon circulated through camp, and Tucktail was happy to hear it, just glad that Owlfur was still alive. - After Tuckkit Jr’s birth, the sightings ceased, and Tucktail assumed Owlfur had moved on (a shame really; he would’ve loved to introduce his kit to him, as Owlfur had acted almost fatherly to him in the past and Tucktail wanted the experience of showing his offspring to his parents). However, that quickly changed. - Out of seemingly nowhere, Tuckkit began wandering off a lot at night. This deeply worried Tucktail, as he didn’t want his child to get hurt. However, when Tuckkit began telling his father about “a nice white cat in the woods”, Tucktail relaxed, believing that Owlfur was watching over his kit. - Cinderstalk soon found out about Tuckkit’s “new friend” while out on a night patrol, where she spotted a very much alive Owlfur chitchatting with an incredibly excited Tuckkit. She pounced, slashing Owlfur across the muzzle before picking up Tuckkit and taking off back to camp. - Once home, Cinderstalk forced Spitestar to call a clan meeting, where she explained who Owlfur was and why he was incredibly dangerous, and she warned her clanmates to keep a close eye on their borders. The news devastated Tucktail, and he quickly began resenting Owlfur, believing that the elderly cat was after his son. - For a long while, things were quiet; Tuckkit stopped wandering off at night, no one had seen Owlfur in awhile, and Tucktail began to feel like his son was safe again... that is, until Owlfur finally struck. Late at night, he attacked alongside the remnants of the AI clan (the only ones who came were Pigeonfeather (Gamma/Gary) and Lizardstrike (Omega/O’Malley)) and stole Tuckkit from the queens/kings den. - The clan devolved into chaos, where a lot of people were injured. In the end, it was Spitestar, Tucktail, and Cinderstalk left conscious to fight off the three intruders. Spitestar managed to lose a life due to Owlfur attacking him, which triggered Tucktail to go all out, pinning Owlfur to the ground. (By this point, he’s learned that Owlfur is his other father, as Owlfur had told Tuckkit he was, in no uncertain terms, his biological grandfather. Besides, while still being cared for by Fixcoat, Owlfur had admitted to Tucktail that he was once in a romantic relationship with Flowerstar). - Although it killed Tucktail inside to do so, he bit into Owlfur’s throat, snapping his neck and killing him in order to protect his kit and clan (before killing Owlfur, he whispered something along the lines of “sorry, dad” or “tell dad I love him” into his ear). - After Owlfur’s death, Pigeonfeather revealed why Owlfur had tried to kidnap Tuckkit; Tuckkit has been blessed by Starclan, and therefore is bound to have some sort of magical powers (think the Big Three in the 3rd arc of the Warrior Cats books). Not only that, it had already been revealed by Fixcoat that this was true, so everyone in the clan believes that Tuckkit is destined to become the clan’s future leader/protector. - Suddenly, Lizardstrike attacked, killing Pigeonfeather (as he wanted the kit’s powers for his own personal use). He then attacked the other cats, who he badly injured. Scooping up Tuckkit, he began to go on his merry way. - Realizing that he was being separated from his father, Tuckkit began to cry, and out of seemingly nowhere, it began to rain. While staring up at the sudden downpour, Lizardstrike was unprepared as a bolt of lightning hit a nearby tree, sending it crashing down on top of him. - Seeing the tree falling, Cinderstalk used the last of her strength to spring forward and knock Tuckkit out of Lizardstrike’s mouth, smacking the kit away before the tree could hit him, too. - Once the dust settled, Cinderstalk and Lizardstrike were dead, crushed underneath the tree. The threats to Tuckkit’s safety gone, the downpour stopped, and Tucktail quickly ran and comforted his son, mourning the loss of so many lives in one night, including his other father.
((That’s pretty much all I got right now... stick around for more bullshit lore at some point in the future))

THE MOST DOG-FRIENDLY NATIONAL PARKS
THE MOST DOG-FRIENDLY NATIONAL PARKS: For any dog-loving traveller, leaving behind our furry friend can often be the hardest part of going on any vacation. Most national parks have strict pet policies and limit them to small areas of the parks. Luckily, there are quite a few national parks that are very pet friendly! So whether you are planning on a just a day trip or a longer stay, there are many national parks to visit that are pet friendly. Here are some of the best national parks to bring along your canine companion! Acadia National Park* Acadia National Park on the coast of Maine is quite a pet friendly park! Dogs are welcome on almost all of the 120 miles of hiking trails that Acadia has to offer making it a great option if you're looking to hike with your pooch. Pets are also welcome on all 45 miles of carriage roads within the park. There are only a few trails that require iron rungs for climbing, making them the only trails that do not allow animals. Dogs are also allowed in nearly all of the public areas at the park - even on the shuttles that go around the park. The only places they are not allowed are Duck Harbor Campground, Wild Gardens of Acadia, Echo Lake Beach, and Sand Beach during high season (mid-May to mid-Sept). Your pup is welcome to join you anywhere else in Acadia National Park making it an ideal spot for your next adventure! Click here to read about the Best Things To Do in Acadia National Park! White Sands National Park White Sands National Park in New Mexico is another park very welcoming to pets. You can explore all of the trails in the park together! The only place that animals are not permitted is inside buildings. Dogs must be leashed but are welcome on all trails, sand dunes, and picnic areas. If you are planning on visiting White Sands, be sure to pack plenty of water for both of you. The dry desert air and high elevation can lead to dehydration and the only place with water access is at the visitors center. Click here to read about the Best Things To Do in White Sands National Park! Hot Springs National Park Located in Arkansas, Hot Springs National Park is a unique national park. The park encompases a historic downtown and forested hiking area. If you're eager to explore the hiking trails, all 26 miles of the available trails are pet friendly for you and your leashed dog. In the historic district, animals are not permitted in the bathhouses at the park, but you and furry friend are welcome to enjoy a stroll on the sidewalks on Bathhouse Row and along the Grand Promenade. If you are looking for a longer stay at the park, Gulpha Gorge campground is a great option if you're looking for a pet friendly camping option. Click here to read about Hot Springs National Park! Cuyahoga Valley National Park Cuyahoga Valley National Park, located outside Cleveland, Ohio, offers 125 miles of trails throughout the park - and your dog is welcome to join you on pretty much all of them! There are many different types of trails passing through fields, wetlands, and woodlands, so it's a good idea to check in with a park ranger to figure out which trails are most suitable for your needs. The only places where pets are not allowed include inside any park building (with the exception of service dogs), on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad Train, and on the East Rim mountain bike trail. Click here to read about the Best Things To Do in Cuyahoga Valley National Park! Petrified Forest National Park* Not only does Petrified Forest National Park permit dogs at the park, they're encouraged to join you on your visit! You and your pup are welcome on all the trails throughout the park and in the backcountry - as long as dogs are leashed. Keep in mind that there is no access to water in the backcountry, so be sure to pack enough water for both of you on your adventure. You and your canine companion can also camp in the park if you'd like. You'll just need to pick up a free backcountry permit at the Painted Desert Visitor Center or Rainbow Forest Museum. There are no established campsites, which means you can camp wherever you'd like to within the park! Click here to learn more about Petrified Forest National Park! Grand Canyon National Park* Located in northern Arizona, Grand Canyon National Park is another park that is very pet friendly! You and your dog are welcome to enjoy all 13 miles of the South Rim Trail. Yavapai Lodge is located inside the park and has pet friendly rooms if you are looking for an overnight option. Animals may also be boarded at the South Rim Kennel. Whether you plan to visit Grand Canyon National Park with or without your canine companion, it is important to note that the high elevation and dry climate can lead to dehydration. Even if you're only planning a short stroll or hike, be sure to bring plenty of water - and don't forget a dog bowl! Click here to read about the Best Things To Do in Grand Canyon National Park! * These national parks participate in the Bark Ranger Program. Jay-Z and the NFL partner on entertainment content and social activism. The NFL is partnering with Jay-Z in a deal that "will put him in charge of managing some entertainment options for the league and will tie into the sport's social justice endeavors," according to the Washington Post and other sources. Jay-Z’s Roc Nation agency will become a co-producer of the Super Bowl halftime show, but the deal "does not contain a provision for him to be the halftime performer." Roc Nation "will choose entertainers who will perform in NFL content throughout the season." Jay-Z said that he "believes that Roc Nation will have the freedom" to produce the "kind of entertainment that it wants." The community activism portion of the partnership "will be tied into the NFL’s existing 'Inspire Change' program with its players.” While Jay-Z faced many questions surrounding his alignment with the NFL while Colin Kaepernick – who Carter has supported quite vocally – remains unemployed, as Carter rightly pointed out, his involvement will likely direct a lot more money to social justice issues. This is a huge win for the NFL, and the potentially positive impact of Jay-Z being willing to join forces with the league — especially now — cannot be overstated.
The LPGA and Group1001 announce a new official LPGA Tour event coming to Boca Raton, Florida in January, 2020. The first edition of the Gainbridge LPGA at Boca Rio will be held January 20-26 at Boca Rio Golf Club. The event will feature a 108-player field competing for a $2 million purse over 72 holes of stroke play. Boca Rio Golf Club, founded in 1967 and designed by Robert von Hagge, is situated four miles from the Atlantic Ocean on 200 acres of native Florida wilderness with no developed real estate. “We are thrilled to support women’s professional golf and to provide a platform for the sport’s best to compete and showcase their talents,” said Dan Towriss, Group1001 CEO. The new event will be one of two LPGA Tour tournaments held in Florida in January. The year will kick off with the Diamond Resorts Tournament of Champions January 15-19 in Lake Buena Vista, one week prior to the Gainbridge LPGA at Boca Rio.
With television revenue rolling in, Power 5 schools are engaged in a new kind of arms race, paying significantly more money than ever before to coaches in so-called non-revenue sports. USA Today examined how much money each Power 5 public school paid its head coaches in 23 sports other than football and men's and women's basketball 2013-2018. In that five-year span, total compensation for those coaches grew 43%, almost the same rate of increase as that of football coaches (51%). In 2005, D-I schools spent more on scholarships than on coaches and administrative pay. Since then, the latter have pulled ahead. In 2005, $736 million was spent on scholarships, $721 million on coaches’ pay, and $686 million on administrative pay. By 2018, $1.92 billion was going to coaches’ pay, $1.72 billion to administrative pay, and $1.7 billion to athlete scholarships. That “compensation for coaches in lower-profile, money-losing sports has been growing at a similar rate to football raises red flags for some athletics directors worried about budget crunches.” It also raises red flags for NCAA critics, who look at skyrocketing salaries in non-revenue sports alongside unpaid student-athletes and see a broken system.
The completion of a $315 million renovation has transformed the 96-year-old Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum from "ravaged to ravishing," according to the Los Angeles Times. The "wide concourse and new concession stands are welcome, and the views from the 1923 Club on the rooftop are dazzling." Every fan will "benefit from enhancements made during the two-year process." Every seat in the stadium is "new and wider and is equipped with a cupholder." Capacity will be 77,500, down from 92,348. Signs on the tunnels were "added to help fans find newly numbered seats, and new video boards and more than 600 TV screens will make it easy to follow games." There will be "more concession stands and the restrooms will continue to undergo improvement during the season." The Times noted 21 of 22 suites at the Coliseum have been sold at prices that ranged from $7.5-10 million with a "commitment of 20 years.” The renovated building will be a much more desirable destination for Trojans fans for years to come, and for Rams fans in their final season before the new Los Angeles Stadium at Hollywood Park opens next year.
It’s back to school time, and in Washington DC, Monumental and EVERFI support STEM. As students across the nation are returning to the classroom, Monumental Sports & Entertainment Founder and Chairman Ted Leonsis is "spearheading a multipronged effort to improve schools and fuel economic growth in the impoverished neighborhoods" around Entertainment & Sports Arena in DC's Ward 8. According to the Washington Times, the initiative, called "Forward8," includes "pushing for the expansion of advanced science, technology, engineering and mathematics" programs in DC schools. Monumental’s Beltway neighbor, education technology leader EVERFI, is likewise proactive in community engagement, empowering more teachers, citizens, and students to get involved with game-based, incentive driven online education that fosters greater comprehension, retention, and behavior change. By bringing together the public and private sectors to change the way education is delivered, EVERFI is equipping today’s learners across the nation with the skills they need to become tomorrow’s leaders, while Monumental is leading the way toward helping improve education, the workforce of tomorrow, and the community in their own backyard.
Formula One has recorded a modest year-on-year rise in revenues for the second financial quarter of 2019, going from $585 million in 2018 to $620 million in its latest financial filing. Operating income rose from $14 million to $26 million over the same period, according to SportsPro. The global motor sport series’ ten teams also saw an increase in their combined payments between April and June from $307 million to $335 million, with the figure directly linked to the overall revenue increase. Formula One’s owners Liberty Media in a statement further explained the overall change in revenues: “Broadcast revenue increased primarily due to contractual rate increases. Advertising and sponsorship revenue increased due to revenue from new sponsorship agreements entered into beginning in the second half of 2018. Other Formula One revenue decreased in the second quarter primarily due to the mix of races, which resulted in lower TV production and Paddock Club revenue.” Formula One CEO Chase Carey also told investors that Liberty Media is making "good headway" in its moves to add a second race in the U.S. Miami and Las Vegas remain the two potential landing cities.
Nike launches first shoe subscription service, two years in the making. According to Fast Company, the retail giant launched the Nike Adventure Club, which sends a pair of Nike or Converse kicks to kids at regular intervals. Club members can receive them on a monthly, bimonthly, or quarterly basis. Each pair of shoes works out to $50-$60 a pair — which puts the service on the higher end of the kids’ sneaker market. What’s more, when a child grows out of a pair or they get worn out, you can send shoes back — either in the Adventure Club box or by requesting a prepaid shoe bag — to the company, and even include non-Nike shoes you want to get rid of. If a shoe is in good condition, Nike will donate it to a nonprofit. But if it has reached the end of its life, Nike will recycle it through its Grind program, which breaks down athletic footwear to turn it into other products, including running tracks and playgrounds. Because of this, Nike is pitching the program as a way to make kid’s shoes sustainable.
Louisiana state commission approves bond sale for Superdome upgrades. Louisiana's State Bond Commission has given the Mercedes-Benz Superdome's governing body the "go-ahead" to sell up to $350 million in bonds to "fund its stadium upgrade project," according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune. The approval is a "major step" for the venue's $450 million makeover. It comes after committee members quizzed Saints President Dennis Lauscha and SMG Executive Vice President of Stadiums and Arenas Doug Thornton about "why the spending was needed and how much the state of Louisiana would have to contribute." Thornton said that they "had studied alternatives for more than two years, including various renovations as well as building an entirely new stadium." Even though the Superdome received $336 million worth of upgrades in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and before it hosted Super Bowl XLVII in 2013, the new upgrades are needed to keep the building competitive based on NFL benchmarks and new stadiums nationwide competing for Super Bowls and other mega events. By 2025, the end of the Saints' current lease, the Superdome is projected to have a total fiscal impact of $19.9 billion.
The Cleveland Browns open up training camp and help puppies find homes. According to The Athletic, more and more NFL teams are limiting public access to training camp, but the Browns are doing the opposite. The team has expanded camp over the past few years to make it more fan- and family-friendly and has added several sets of large bleachers, food trucks and beer stands, and games for kids and teens. The highlight of the training camp is Browns Puppy Pound, which adopts out puppies from the Northeast Ohio SPCA during every open practice. More than 110 dogs have been adopted thus far in training camp this year and more than 450 puppies have been adopted through the partnership since the Puppy Pound debuted in 2015. By bringing the dogs to a place where people are happy to be going, the Browns have helped nearly 500 dogs find homes.
The annual Gagne-Bergeron Pro-Am raised over $450,000 for children’s charities in the Boston area. The event took place on August 8 and featured 10,000 fans in attendance to watch the annual charity hockey game. Now in its 11th year, the event has funneled $2 million to charity since its inception. Notable names who participated in this year’s event includes Paul Stansy as a representative of Golden Knights on the ice. According to Le Journal de Quebec, Philippe Boucher Foundation, the Maurice Tanguay Foundation and the Simple Plan Foundation will benefit from the money raised at the event which included the participation of 21 NHL players and other amateur players at the Videotron Center in Quebec. Hockey is a close-knit community and by bringing together notable names in the off-season, fans stay engaged with players while also helping those in need.

They stared at the news reports all week and tuned in to NOAA satellite footage for Hurricane Michael updates. It had been true for years, but now these people could honestly say they were in the cone of uncertainty. The category 2 storm had just left the Caribbean and was gaining strength as it plowed north through the Gulf of Mexico, heading straight to the Big Bend area of Florida and Suwannee Roots Revival at the Spirit of Suwannee Music Park. Ask Dog Island and Cedar Key what it’s like when a hurricane smashes into the beaches in this part of the world. Ask Mama Lila’s guesthouse on Fort Morgan beach. When hurricane force winds lift the water up and out of its basin, things disappear. Maybe not the best place to ride out a hurricane. With folks from Tallahassee evacuated all the way to Fort Myers, what kind of derainged animals would drive straight toward the storm to go camping in the woods at a music festival? A rare breed, to be sure and it certainly boggles the mind.
It was a family reunion in every sense of the word. Friends made at Suwannee Music Park are as strong as the bonds of kin folk and tend to last for years. As time passes, the family membership continues to swell to the point where there are no strangers in the park. Welcome to Suwannee Roots Revival 2018: Feeder Band Family Reunion

000 WTNT34 KNHC 082041 TCPAT4 BULLETIN Hurricane Michael Advisory Number 9 NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL AL142018 400 PM CDT Mon Oct 08 2018 …MICHAEL BRINGING HURRICANE-FORCE WINDS AND HEAVY RAINFALL TO WESTERN CUBA… …STORM SURGE AND HURRICANE WARNINGS ISSUED FOR THE NORTHEASTERN GULF COAST…
A Hurricane Warning has been issued for the Gulf Coast of Florida from the Alabama/Florida border eastward to Suwannee River.
Folks like Moonshine Gary and Shannon traveled east on I-10, navigating fallen trees on the interstate with emergency vehicles close behind them. Others drove straight through the eye of the storm, headed for Live Oak. The group that met up Tuesday night, set up camp in the woods and waited together for the worst of the storm. By that time it had strengthened to a category 4 and it was anyone’s guess what was going to happen if the storm landed near Live Oak. As it would turn out, the hurricane turned left as the night went on and smashed into Panama City. Other than a few, light sprinkles, the park and party crowd remained untouched. The rest of the weekend showcased weather so perfect it could only be Suwannee Roots Revival.
Once again, the Kamp Happiness relaxation installation served as a commons area for this year’s family reunion. Friends made at Suwannee Music Park can be as stout as any kin folk and as the years pass, festival friends end up at each other’s weddings and funerals. They came all the way from South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia and all parts Florida. They brought their vans, trucks and recreation vehicles and surrounded each other like a wagon train. The RV crowd hooked up by the bat house, giving everyone a reason to occasionally visit the farm field. Thank you Peanut for the purple butterfly and the mad skins.

New at Suwannee Roots Revival:
Roots Welcomes Darth Waffle: The newest member of the Suwannee Roots Revival media team hit the dirt running and covered the entire festival from withers to brisket. Katie Walthall could be seen dragging her camera to and fro, backstage and yonder, catching great photographs of the performers and festivarians. A media pass will only get you so far. For some places, it takes a lanyard and a great pair of legs. Check out the beautiful writing and photographs on her website and like her social media outlets on Facebook and Instagram.

Dead Cat Pleasure Palace Hours of Operation: Since MagnoliaFest 2002, the Dead Cat Pleasure Palace has been providing a “sense of place” for festivarians everywhere and most certainly at the Spirit of Suwannee Music Park. It’s open-air relaxation station serves as a perfect place to enjoy a cuddle puddle next to the roaring campfire. For years this commons area has effectively served the needs of festival participants while also meeting the needs of Kamp Happiness personel when it comes to the much needed and deserved rest that comes after a day of intensly passionate sillineszs. Up until this year, everyone’s consideration and personal responsibility had been appreciated, but due to this year’s repeated incidents and a few bad apples, new guidelines have been enacted. Imagine the scenario; It’s 5:30 am and you’ve finished playing bluegrass music at Slopprygrass. Your head hurts and your fingers are cracked and tired. It’s all you can do to drag your dirty, bare feet back to your own campsite. As you get ready to crawl into your tent for a few, scant hours of rest, you notice a form sleeping under the covers, in the darkness. Who could this be? You came here by yourself and playing “hard to want” has worked out predictably poorly. But this could certainly be preceived as some kind of overt message. perhaps a seriously flirty advance by a desperate, unknown caller. It would be stranger than fiction. Only after inspecting closer and finding the dirty, bare feet were probably size 11 and belonged to a young Auburn graduate who had drank too many shots of warm crotch whiskey. Precious he was, all bundled up in great grandmother’s quilts. With a cool front, pushed in by the storm, it was going to be a chilly night and no one needs to catch a sniffle. There’s always tomorrow night.
Ask your mom if all cops are racist.
Hey bitch, get out of my tent. Lady, you’re fine right where you are. Suwannee Roots Revival 2018: photo by Jill Wickham The next night would prove to be no better. A lovely causasian couple found their way into the palace toward the close of the night, in hopes of finding some Wifi and complete some photo editing discuised as soft-core pornography. They would close out the evening popping each other’s chigger bites and again, fall into a blissful slumber in a hotel whose blinking neon sign clearly read, “No Vacancy”. Check our website and social media sites for updates, but until further notice, the Pleasure Palace hours of operation are from nine until nine. Thank you, in advance, for your consideration.
Free Range Strange: The brightest and best in bluegrass and hippy-funk wasn’t always playing on the main stage. Tim, Sunnie Rae and Chase from Free Range Strange took a break from their busy Florida touring schedule to visit the jam circles of Roots Revival. Thanks to all who participated in sharing a beautiful noise, especially Sunnie Rae, who helped make everyone look a little better. Both Tim and Chase were lovely additions to nearly every bluegrass circle, and other than a few scattered instances loosely labeled as “moral terpitude”, confusion and tweakish behavior was unusually scant.
Roadtrip Mojo: After several festivals, we finally hooked up with Jeff from RoadTrip Mojo. Through Spring, Wannee and Lockn’, it was time to band with our new brothers in the Florida social media intereweb. Check out their website and get in on one of their sweet camping giveaways. If the statute of limitations has, indeed passed, there promises to be more foot-stomping fun at Hulaween in just a few days. Eeeek.
These flowers are just one of the reasons Kamp Happiness installation has been so successful, Suwannee Roots Revival 2018: photo by Jason Nail
Personal Fires: Don’t get all heady just because someone in your camp wants to have a personal fire. Sometimes things can get a little intense around the group fire and it’s a pleasure to back into your own space while your head unwraps itself. Unfortunately, in this case, a new Hawaiian shirt from Eddie W. caught fire from a candle in the Dab Den and filled the room with carcinogenic rayon gas before emergency services arrived. Considering the levels of responsibility usually associated with the Dead Cat Society, the reason for this incident has been traced back to Beth’s Million Dollar Bacon.
Samantha Fish, Suwannee Roots Revival 2018: photo by Jason Nail
Suwannee is for lovers: Congratulations to Zane and Dr. Jen who got engaged at this year’s party. Be wary single festivarians. Music weekends in the woods are great places to meet crazy hippy chicks and before you know it, you’re proposing during Keller’s Bluegrass Gospel Church. It’s about as dangerous at a gondola at Telluride.
Kamp Happiness and friends, Suwannee Roots Revival 2018:
Where’s TooMuch?: For the fifth year, the folks at Kamp Happiness were good enough to let us dangle in their camp and share in their fellowship and music. Their blinking art installation served as a musical campsite and meeting spot for many of the Suwannee regulars. String music could be heard flowing from the camp all hours of the day or night. Morning versions of “New Dehli Train” set the stage for greatness into late night jams as the Kamp Happiness Family Band somehow managed to hold togerther a lengthy set of bluegrass classics in four-part harmony. Kamp Happiness VIP award winner for 2018 was Thomas Gerard Larose, who managed to entertain the troops with his morning Deadhead lounge piano stylings and prepare homemade barbecue tempe in spite of his recently debilitating hot tub injury. Thanks to Peter, Darth Waffle and Moonpie for assisting with the loading and unloading of his production equipment. Who knew one could use a handicap trailer to sneak contraband booze into the venue? if you’re self medicated and attempt a swan dive into a hot tub, you may well end up braking your shell. Especially when the bones are so old as to render modern, carbon dating equipment virtually useless. After a certain passage of time, one’s bones become brittle and maintain the structural integrity of burnt paper.

Let Oteil Sing: Roots welcomed Bassist Oteil Burbridge and his Oteil & Friends project featuring guitarists John Kadlecik and Scott Metzger, multi-instrumentalits Jason Crosby, drummer Jay Lane, percussionist Weedie Braimah and vocalist Alfreda Gerald. They tore up Thursday night with their unique sound and set the tempo for a long night of music and laughter.
Oteil and Friends, Suwannee Roots Revival 2018: photo by Jason Nail
Golf carts: Thanks to Kendall, Ted, Cameron and Kent for keeping the golf carts rotating timely and efficiently throughout the park. It can be a long haul from the bat house to the Loop and it’s nice to catch a lift, especially with some hillbilly driving while blind. From now on, local officials have mandated that remote breathalyzers be attached to the ignition systems of every golf cart in the park. These protective measures were put in place after Kendall drove his golf cart off the metal bridge into the Suwannee River. As time passes, his memory shall never fade.
Some go for the music. The rock and roll jams on stage, Leftover Salmon and all the late night pickin’ circles one can stomach. Some come for the sauce. The handles of warm crotch whiskey and double IPAs along with one of the best combos of the festival, sangria and Aderol. Have no illusions dear heart, these are worthwhile pursuits, but the last real reason to see this and most other festivals is the family. Goofballs and slack jawed rednecks from the contiguous U.S., all heading to the same place, in spite of the hurricane west wind.
As always, thanks to Erin Scholze at Dreamspider Publicity and Events for letting nailtravels and Kamp Happiness be small cogs in the larger machine of beautiful fellowship and fun. Best job ever.
So take a nap and a shower. Get those feet clean and wash the smoke out of those clothes. Hulaween is next week and it will be another round of finest and brightest anywhere. Look for the South Florida charter of Kamp Happiness next to the Poncho Tree and Luke’s Lake. Live

Description:
Is your Dog driving you crazy? Are You ready for the Psych Ward?
“Discover Dog Training Secrets Tom Hanks Wished He’d had on “Turner & Hooch!”
Finally! Dog Training Book Secrets Revealed: in my simple to use ‘take-you by-the-hand’ dog training system. The secrets that are nothing like anything previously used. This dog training ebook system is only available to dog owners who purchase through this website!
You will see results immediately… even if you have never had a family dog before! If you have tried but failed to train “that darn dog”… THESE are the professional Secrets you want!
The same strategies I used for years to handle dozens of ‘unruly’ dogs at a time in my dog grooming business, are revealed to you in this simple to use step-by-step system.
Are you at the end of your rope with your dog’s insistence on grinding his snout into every guest that comes through the front door? Or do you have a new puppy that is not potty trained and just don’t know where to begin?
If you are like the many dog owners I met every week in my dog grooming business, frustrated with a misbehaved dog, then you are certainly not unique. I know because I saw it every day. For example does your dog…
Has this behaviour got you at the end of your rope? … And generally just driving you absolutely crazy?
It’s Not Your Fault But You Need Help and You Need It Fast!
I’ve been there and I know what it feels like to have a misbehaved dog.
Our family dog Luke was full of energy that just didn’t know what to do with himself when we brought him home as a young puppy. We didn’t want to go through the painful experience of a misbehaved puppy so we trained him to avoid all the pain and made owning a family dog the enjoyable experience that it is suppose to be.
Available to you now in this cutting edge book are the same secrets I used day in and day out to manage sometimes as many as 25 to 30 dogs in my dog grooming store. My book is written in easy to understand everyday language to help people like you who came to my store day in and day out with dogs that just needed a little help in the training department.
I had to write it because I saw so many unhappy dog owners who could simply turn it all around into a pleasant situation if they just had a few simple secrets. Most of my customers were amazed at just how easy it was to turn their dog from a nightmare to a “good dog!” It was my duty to share these secrets and strategies’ so you can start to enjoy a well-trained dog or puppy fast.
Frankly I was amazed at the positive feedback and results my customers were getting when I first started sharing my training secrets. But I also know that your dog will even love you more for it.
Thanks to the training secrets that I share in my book “Dog Owners Boot Camp” even first time dog owners are achieving miraculous success. You to will discover just how easy and fast it really is to have a well-trained dog as a pet.
Owning this book will make your dog training confidence soar. Your Friends and neighbours may even come to you for advice. But wait . . . there’s even more!
Thanks to this SUPER-SIMPLE Dog Training System made for “REGULAR PEOPLE” with little or no training experience, you’ll quickly discover that training your dog can be SIMPLE AND FUN.
Your friends might even start calling you”The Dog Guru” when they hear about your great success with your pet!!
Frankly I’m not just saying this because it sounds good; I am just repeating what many happy owners have said after reading my book. Here is what one happy customer said after he started using my system:
“I was at the end of my leash with Max when I got your book. I was almost going to put him up for adoption but your training tips showed immediate results. Within 2 days Max was not jumping on guests anymore. My wife was amazed and it really has made a complete difference in our house”
Jim Ledbetter, Orlando, Florida
And this is what another dog grooming storeowner wrote to me:
“Working with so many dogs at the same time such as you have can be a real challenge. You can easily lose your patience in a dog-grooming store so your information was a real saving grace. It has made my job so much easier and less stressful. Another great bonus for me is how much better I have been able to train my own dog Copper. It has made it easier when I get home each day to enjoy seeing Copper rather than just not wanting to see another dog. Thank you it really has made a big difference”
Julie Milne, Cleveland, Ohio
Imagine…. what it would be like for you to open your front door and have your dog sit at your side, well behaved while you greet your guest. You are in control. Your dog obeys your every command. No, you are not dreaming in color… it’s easy to do!
Imagine… Taking your dog for a walk… no more constant tugging at the leash and wanting to chase everything ‘Hooch’ sees. Can you imagine what it would not be like having a sore arm from trying to restrain your dog?
When you ask him to heel… He does.
When you ask him to stay he does… Every time!
When you are walking with your dog in a park you don’t have to worry about him straining at his leash to see the other dogs because he will stay in your control awaiting your commands.
Can you see yourself in that park, no more embarrassment, the envy of all other frustrated untrained dog owners? Because if you don’t… you will want to get your copy of ‘Dog Owners Boot Camp’ and start right now!

The Only Dog Training Book That Trains Owners and Their Dogs
How many people do you know that think training their dog is yelling louder each time they give a command? They think the dog is hard of hearing so they keep yelling the same command over and over again and expect different results. Is this not the definition of insanity?
They give a command and when the dog doesn’t follow it they punish the dog. What does the dog think when you punish him after giving a command? The dog thinks they should never do what you are commanding. You see it all the time and some of us are even guilty of unintentionally doing it with out even realizing we do it.
Our dogs get confused and rightfully so. They want to please us but just don’t know how to because of the mixed messages we send out. Your dog likes it when he can please you and this is why ‘Dog Owners Boot Camp’ is making such an impact on dogs and their families everywhere. Dog training has to train the owner first and then the dog will be a willing happy servant giving unconditional love.
A well-trained dog is just so much more fun for both you and your family. Your dog will be happier, healthier and love you more for it.
Once your dog is well trained you will find that you involve him in the family events more often and this alone will mean more exercise and better health for your dog. You owe it to your family and your dog. In fact it’s the right thing to do.
Bottom line is that a properly exercised and trained dog will bring you and your family more pleasure and for more years.
The more exercise your dog gets means:
‘Less Poor Behaviour Problems and More Family Fun’
Remember that training your dog is much easier and simpler than you think… When you know how!
Here’s the ‘fun and easy’ way to train your dog and get results immediately:

‘Don’t take my word just read what Renowned Personal Coach to veterinarians worldwide Dr. Steve Kornfeld, D.V.M. had to say in his foreword to this amazing book’
It is rare, among the many books written annually on pet care, to find one that is both comprehensive and spoken from the heart. “Dog Owner Boot Camp” captures the essence of owning, caring, training and enjoying our beloved canine friends.
As a veterinarian in practice for the past 14 years, I am exposed to numerous magazines and books on every subject related to owning dogs. “Dog Owner Boot Camp”, in a unique way, discusses the mutual commitment between humans and dogs as if written by a dog! Very wisely it examines humans’ behavior from a dog’s perspective; what dogs desire from their masters and why they sometimes push the limits.
If dogs ever came with an operational manual, this book gets pretty close to being one. Packed with useful and insightful new information and ideas on being dog’s best friend, it covers the entire gamut of dogs’ life, their needs, desires, hopes and dreams. It covers both the mundane of the day-to-day life of dogs and their owners and the esoteric, new developments in holistic dog treatment. It rolls in the mud, it runs in a pack and it fraternizes with dogs. It seems to truly capture what drives dogs’ behavior and how to enjoy them to the fullest.
It takes you through the steps of finding the right dog for you and for your family; is it going to be a purebred or a mutt from the animal shelter? It then takes you through the life stages of your dog and the intricacies of every stage. It then delves into the mysteries of dog behavior, how to curb undesirable traits and how to help your doggy friend develop new ones. Grooming, an important routine in dogs’ life, is exhaustive. You will understand exactly what is involved in grooming your dog, how to find the right groomer and how to avoid costly mistakes in dealing with them.
Dogs, like people, have basic physical and mental needs. They, just like us, sometimes get sick. Understanding many of the potential ailments dogs are plagued by, can alleviate your friend’s suffering and at times save his/her life.
The chapter on saying goodbye to your friend is very touching and heart warming. This chapter in our relationship with our dogs is always difficult to process. Yet your friend, as a last wish, would like for you to remember the many years of mutual giving; this memory will guarantee your friend will live forever.
This book is a really top-dog companion to all dog owners and dog lovers. Having a great reference book like this one on your shelf is a great gift to give to your dog. Steve Kornfeld, D.V.M. Oakland, CA

Wildlife Park to focus on Black Bears in June
Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park will be focusing on Florida’s Black bears during the month of June. There will be displays and hands-on activities in the Visitor Center and in the Discovery Center throughout the month. A special program on Living with Black bears by Lori Lindsay is scheduled for Thursday, June 21, 2018 starting at 1:00 pm and will be held in the Florida Room at the park’s Visitor Center. There will be no charge to attend the program. Lindsay has been working as a Bear Response Contractor with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for four years; and has been working with Black bears and doing educational programs on this subject for about 8 years. She says, “Bears have become a passion of mine, and I love being able to share information about bears in hopes of keeping bears on our landscape, while keeping both bears and humans safe.” Lindsay adds that “Animals have always been an interest of mine - I was an assistance dog instructor for 13 years, and still enjoy doing some dog training now.” She is a Florida Master Naturalist Land Steward and is currently working on completing her Florida Master Naturalist certification.
The Florida black bear is rebounding from endangered status. It is the largest mammal to live in the Sunshine State. In her program, Lindsay will be covering basic bear biology and behavior, and things to do to remain safe when living or recreating in bear country. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has a brochure available titled A Guide to Living in Bear Country with lots of valuable information on Black bears and how we can coexist with them. According to this informative pamphlet you can learn a great deal about these mammals. Black bears are shy animals and generally not aggressive towards people. When a bear stands on its hind legs, it is merely trying to get a better view, rather than acting in a threatening way. If a bear huffs, snaps its jaws or swats the ground, it feels threatened.
Female bears often roam in springtime. FWC photo. Black bears might “bluff charge” when cornered, threatened or when stealing food. Stand your ground and then slowly back away. Always respect bears – they are large and powerful wild animals. Black bears are the only species of bear in Florida. The Black bear once roamed the state’s entire 34.5 million acres. They are now considered a threatened species. The estimated bear population number is now approximately 4050, or just over 4000 bears estimated to be in the state. Florida’s Black bears are black with a brown muzzle and may have a white chest marking called a blaze. Adult bears can weigh from 150-400 pounds, with males usually being larger than females. Females have their first litter at approximately 3 ½ years of age and generally have one to three cubs every other year. The breeding season runs from June to August with cubs born seven months later.
Bears are amazing climbers. Bears of all ages are excellent climbers and will climb trees when they are frightened. Eighty percent of a Black bear’s diet comes from plants (fruits, nuts and berries), 15% from insects and only 5% from meat. The FWC recommends that you do not intentionally feed or attract bears. If a bear is eating something on your property, take note of what it is and secure it after the bear has left the area. To discourage bears it is important to properly store and secure residential garbage and other bear attractants such as trash and recycling containers, bird and squirrel feeders, game feeders, pet foods and bowls, barbecue grills and smokers, pets and small livestock, livestock feed, compost piles, beehives and fruit and nut-bearing trees and shrubs.
Bears are notorious for seeking human garbage in trash cans. FWC photo. These attractants can be secured by using electric fencing to protect gardens, compost piles, apiaries and livestock. FWC recommends that you store garbage and recyclables in bear-resistant containers in a secured area. Also feed your pets indoors or bring their food dishes inside before dark. Remove bird and wildlife feeders. Never approach or surprise a bear. Keep as much distance as possible between yourself and the bear. Make sure you are in a secure area, and the bear has a clear escape route to leave the area. Then yell, bang pots and pans to scare the bear away. Do not turn your back on the bear or run from it. Back away slowly into a house, car or building. The FWC says you can help conserve Black bears by purchasing a Conserve Wildlife license plate at your local tax collector’s office or online at BuyAPlate.com.

Endangered Species: Childhood Abandonment Of The Wilderness
Over the past 20 years our children have become increasingly alienated from the natural world. They have abandoned our open spaces and wilderness where unstructured imaginative play has existed for as long as the human species. Youthful expeditions that discovered shortcuts to school and secret hiding places are being eradicated by societal fears and impending litigation. Days spent building forts in the woods and swimming in ponds are quickly fading from our social history. At best, the constricting radius children are allowed to travel around their homes limits them to the trusted patches of grass and concrete in the front yard.
The effects of this nature deficit on the physical, emotional, and spiritual health of our youth are popular topics in the social laboratory. Sacramento State University offers a course solely examining the effects of television on our youth. It is considered a likely contributor to childhood obesity, aggressive behaviors, and Attention Deficit Disorder.
It is a curious abandonment from a parenting philosophy that once produced some of the best lessons of childhood. Kevin Smith remembers growing up in Camarillo, a small coastal farm town in California. “As kids my brother and I, along with several neighborhood friends, would spend hours playing in a large wheat field at the end of our street. We would dig holes and build ‘forts’ with whatever we had laying around the house. Sometimes our parents would let us camp out overnight. This would all disappear twice a year when the land owner plowed the field so he could replant wheat for his cattle.”
Natasha Morisawa, a Bioterrorism and Emergency Preparedness Analyst in Pasadena, California, remembers walking her dogs for hours with her sister. They toured local parks, learning the neighborhood along the way. “Not just our street or block, but details about the blocks between our house and the park; details that we would never know if we rode in the car.”
The Electronic Nanny
What is blamed for the disconnect? The ever-rising popularity of video games, television, and computers are obvious targets. For the first time in history, early life experiences are formed more by LCD pixels and cartoon characters than insect collections and treehouses. A study conducted by Kaiser Family Foundation found that US youth now spend an average of five hours a day–40 percent of their awake hours–in front of electronic devices. And the behavior starts young. Children under the age of two years old will spend over two hours daily in front of a media screen.
In 1997, the American Academy of Pediatrics(AAP) focused their studies on the potential health risks that television, movies, music videos and video games present to our youth. Since then, it has been linked to a number of conditions. It is generally accepted as a contributor to childhood obesity and hypertension by encouraging inactivity. Compounding the problem, the most commonly advertised foods during children’s programming are high in fat, sugar and salt. Academically, there is a relationship between excessive television viewing and a decline in reading and comprehension skills. Emotionally, media overexposure can contribute to aggressive behaviors and desensitization to violence. As children grow into young adults, conditions with body image, sexuality, and self-concept may also develop from the portrayal of unrealistic scenarios.
But researchers aren’t ready to say that digital and media entertainment are completely to blame. They may only be symptoms of greater challenges; something to fill a child’s time due to lost options.
The Criminalization of Play
In today’s communities, money has become a powerful source of retribution. Mental anguish, embarrassment and disrespect all have a price. We sue over ruined pants and a neighbor’s blowing leaves. Playtime is not exempt from this system. The fear of litigation from a child falling from a tree or tripping at a creek crossing is too great. Nervous homeowners dissolved any play in their yards, fearful that a slip on wet grass could lead to losing their home, their retirement, or their own child’s college fund.
As youth are increasingly locked out of undeveloped lands, Park and Recreation departments scramble to create equitable outdoor experiences. A replica of the lost opportunities. They erect plastic molded climbing walls, cushioned groundcover, skate parks and water slides.
The Information Age
In 1980 Turner Broadcasting launched CNN introducing America to a new news format. A 24-hours-a-day endlessly looping news format. Not far behind, cable television multiplied our channel count from five to hundreds. How to fill all those channels, all those hours? Repetition. Hour after hour, network upon network. Repeat daily.
In 1989, the World Wide Web was born. The internet provided a platform for accelerating information around the globe. Once connected, the public no longer had to wait for delivery of news through television and print media-they could hunt for it. An avenue to know practically anything we wanted at any time, ad nauseum. Our hunter gatherer nature was aroused.
Parents embraced the new format, collecting information that would keep themselves and their children safer; a parent’s ultimate responsibility. But what do they ultimately find?
A twenty second internet search presents these results:
* A non-family member abduction occurs every nine minutes in the united states.
* There are 4 million pet dog attacks in the US, mostly on children.
* As many as one in twenty adults has active pedophile thoughts or tendencies. (Global Children’s Fund)
* About 1000 children die from drowning.
* Every year approximately 250,000 children are brought to the emergency room due to a bicycle injury.
Then the newspaper arrives and headlines reinforce the threats. “Oxnard Man Shot to Death”, “Bird Tests Positive for West Nile Virus”, “Mountain Lion Sighted on California Rooftop”. Television carries us further from home. “A Chino Hills Park is closed after a coyote attack on a two year old…”
“Police are searching for a 14 year old girl that went missing from her Bel Air home early Tuesday…” With information like this appearing by the strike of a keyboard or the push of a remote control, it is understandable why parents are fearful. There are a world of threats leaned up against our front door.
Enter the Free Range Kid.
The Free Range Kid Movement
Last month Lenore Skenazy of New York City was labeled the “Worst Mother in the World” by public critics across the country. What does a mother need to do to garner such virulent disapproval across America? She dropped her nine year old son off at a department store in New York, and challenged him to return home safely.
At his pleading, Skenezy left her son inside a New York city Bloomingdale’s. He wanted the challenge of finding his way back, alone, one subway ride and a bus connection from their home. Mom gave him a subway map, a Metro card, a twenty dollar bill and some change for a phone call. She told him what to do if he got lost. Then she returned to their home and waited. He found his way back without incident, mother and child both thrilled by his accomplishment.
When Skenazy mentioned the event to friends and acquaintances she was met with unrestrained condemnation. She was reminded of a recent abduction of a young girl in Florida.
“How would you have felt if he didn’t come home?”
“I don’t want to be the one on TV explaining my daughter’s disappearance.” And that was before Skenazy put it in writing. As an opinion columnist with a typically humorous slant, she hardly expected the massive reaction that was coming when she documented it in her weekly New York Sun column.
As the controversy grew, Skenazy started a blog and message board where opponents and supporters gathered to debate. Some visitors embrace her parenting decision completely, some agree philosophically but are unable to engage in the practice, and others outright condemn the experience as criminal.
The debate spawned a new parenting approach; or rather, a return to an old one. The Free Range Kid Movement was born. Despite accusations to the contrary, Free Range Parents don’t discourage bicycle helmets, car seats, or airbags. They don’t encourage running with scissors. They want a return to the lifestyle that existed before the information age-including the risks that come with it. They believe it is essential to training children’s independence and decision-making abilities. Free range parents allow their pre-teen children to walk to school alone. To ride their bicycles to the library. To play in the woods unsupervised.
Free Range Parents also come armed with their own counter-statistics. That a child is 40 times more likely to die in a car accident than be abducted. That, contrary to statistics broadcast on the Today Show, the US Justice department shows a decline in child abductions since 1988. And since 1980, death rates dropped by about half for children between the ages of five and fourteen.
Ventura County is home to two of the safest communities in America, Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley, though you wouldn’t always know it. Even for parents that agree with the philosophy of the movement, they don’t find it quite so simple to practice. “I think there is a generalized feeling that the open spaces are wonderful in a supervised situation, but that unsupervised there is too much potential for a predator to be lying in wait, whether it be one of the human or animal.” Says Heather Quaal.
Natasha Morisawa agrees, “I think I would like to be more of a ‘free range parent.’…But for now, I will acknowledge my vulnerability and do what I can so that I can raise these boys in the best world I know.”
One side will argue that the reason the numbers are down is because their children are better protected from the threats. The other side will argue that the threats never existed in the first place. With many parents, the risk is too great or too frivolous. Some make little distinction between free range parenting and the criminally negligent.
Nature Cures
What is generally agreed by both sides is the effect this nature deficit is having on our youth. The responsibility to nurture healthy, confident and curious children hasn’t changed. Childhood obesity, caused by the body taking in more calories than it burns, has tripled since 1960. In addition, Type 2 diabetes, mellitus, hypertension, and obstructive sleep apnea are all conditions that can carry directly into adulthood. Nature experiences have been increasingly abandoned as one of the most effective cures to these conditions.
In his book Last Child in the Woods, Richard Louv acknowledges the challenge. “Parents already feel besieged by the difficulty of balancing work and family life. Understandably, they may resist the idea of adding any to-dos to their long list of chores. So here is another way of viewing the challenge: Nature as an antidote. Stress reduction, greater physical health, a deeper sense of spirit, more creativity, a sense of play, even a safer life-these are the rewards that await a family when it invites more nature into children’s lives.”
The American Academy of Pediatrics agrees. It believes increasing physical activity and shifting to a healthy diet can reverse many of the recent childhood illness trends. Psychologically, it finds that outdoor physical activity increases self-esteem and self-concept, just as it decreases anxiety and depression.
The debate between cause and symptom will continue, but is ultimately irrelevant to the child sitting passively in their living room today. As children fall further out of sync with nature, they miss the lessons nature has provided for youth during all of human existence. By keeping our youth indoors, we risk confining them to a very small, often paranoid world. Parents may need to reinforce in themselves that muddy hands and an occasional skinned knee are part of growing up. Through this, their children will learn about a world of mysticism and surprise, amusement and challenge that exists beyond their electronic world. A world that is waiting for them past the screen door.
