Lady Zorro #1
Tumblr media
Lady Zorro #1 American Mythology Productions 2020 Written by Pat Shand Illustrated by Vincenzo Carratù Coloured by Beezzz Studio Lettered by Natalie Jane Interior Layout Assists by Larry Watts & Mike Wolfer     Who is Lady Zorro? Like an avenging phantom, Lady Zorro haunts the arid wastes of the southern California desert, defiantly fighting against the tyrannical forces of the Spanish Empire, but how did she come to be a revered, legendary figure in Native American folklore? In an all-new take on the Zorro mythos, we'll learn those answers and more in this special, one-shot tale of supernatural adventure that introduces you to a Lady Zorro we have never before seen! A secret cabal of Spanish Army soldiers who call themselves "The Pr digo" are using stolen, Native American magic to power their reign of terror over the native inhabitants of Alta California, and no one but Lady Zorro stands in their way. But will her incredible, acrobatic and sword skills be enough to stem the slaughter, led by the hideous, transformed Father Serra, who wields dark magic and commands an army of monstrous, demon coyotes? It's an all-new Lady Zorro for an all-new generation of readers!     I liked this story a lot. I think that it spins out of a previous arc makes a lot of sense considering what it was we saw there. Then to have her take up the mantle in his name and carry on a tradition of helping those who need it gives her life new meaning and that is quite evident as we see throughout these pages. The way that this is being told is great because it's not just a gender swap it's done with purpose and as an homage which if you've followed the latest arcs you'll understand why. Pat does this with some really great respect and I am thoroughly enjoying how we see the introduction of her as she moves through the pages.     The way this is being told is really extremely thoughtful and well rendered. The story & plot development we see through how the sequence of events unfold and how the reader learns information is presented beautifully. The opening is dramatic, intense and thoroughly entertaining while it seems more than a tad bit confusing. Odd and supposedly ceremonial in a way well you'll have to see it really engages the reader in strong way. This leads me into the character development we see here. I really like the way that we get to know these people. While the situations and circumstances find them revealing more about them by how they act and react there are also some very quiet times where we get the opportunity for those little things that say volumes. The pacing is great and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way it helps to create the books ebb & flow.     The interiors here are really to see. The linework is strong and interesting and how the varying weights are utilised to bring out the attention to detail is extremely well done. Our Friar or Padre or whatever he's supposed to be has this really nice hairy body which is something we don't see a lot of any more and I wish we would. The way we see backgrounds being utilised and how the work within the composition in the panels bring us a nice sense of scale, depth perception, the utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show this really good, solid and strong eye for storytelling. I am also really appreciating the way that we see the colour work here as well. The various hues and tones we see within the colours utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is rendered extremely well.      This is the start of something exciting. The way that this has about is so organic and so natural that it just feels right. We've barely begun and while she may have found a new identity to hide behind she's still that same frightened young woman who lost her brother and saw things that should have been impossible. So I will be interested in seeing how her personal growth and development works alongside her new persona. Shops will not be closed forever so you are going to want to contact your store and let them know you'll want this when it comes out.

Zorro Sacrilege #4
Tumblr media
Zorro Sacrilege #4 American Mythology Productions 2019 Written by Mike Wolfer Illustrated by Alex Miracolo Coloured by Beezzz Studio Lettered by Natalie Jane     The explosive conclusion to ZORRO: SACRILEGE is here!     Faced with the prospect of either exorcising the possessed inhabitants of the town or killing them all to free their souls, Zorro must sacrifice everything to destroy the evil once and for all! This is blazing supernatural action like you have never seen before as a legendary hero must face the very legions of Hell!     This single issue feels like it's changing the way Zorro sees his world forever. Don Diego has played the part of the playboy for so long that in this role he has never done more or less what is merely on the surface. He has his workshop where he creates, invents, new weapons to use in crusade against injustice and never once did he stop and think where his family's money came from.. I absolutely love the fact that this man, Don Diego De La Vega, is confronted by an enemy whose existence is older than even the natives of this land. This enemy, this Diablo, has done more for not only furthering the emotional side of Don Diego but has enlightened him in ways that no one else has yet been able to do.     Mike has proven his skills and talent as a writer many times over and yet here we are with an issue that has the emotional punch of Canelo Alvarez hitting you in the jaw. This changes how we see Zorro as well as he sees himself and to be able to do this while in the midst of this battle is beyond anything I could have wished for. The story & plot development for this is amazingly well done and how we see the information released so that we don't grasp what is truly happening until Zorro does is marvellous to see. The character development with Zorro and Muat is dynamic and impactful in so many ways. That it's always moving and feels like liquid running down a slope in ways that you cannot predict. With the pacing and how it allows the reader to see the twists and turns and the revelations make the ebb & flow of the story just pure dynamite.     The interiors here are superb. The linework we see is exquisite and how the varying weights are manipulated and utilised to bring forth this attention to detail is rather stunning. The faces, facial expressions and body language not only bring us more characterisation but also provide a sense of movement and fluidity. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a strong and talented eye for storytelling. The only thing I want to see more of are backgrounds, when we do see them they are sensational for enhancing the moments and providing a sense of size and scale to the book. The use lines to show movement isn't necessary and instead I'd love to see backgrounds utilised. The colour work is beautifully done as well. It is nice to see the darkness and heaviness of the situation come through in how the colours are utilised.      If you have ever been a Zorro fan, wanted to see what he's all about, or just want to read some of the finest storytelling around you need to be asking your shop for this. It also sets up the Lady Zorro comic that'll be out soon as well. The respect to the past, tradition as well as the present and even the future are all within these pages so do yourself a favour and find this today.

Zorro in Swords of Hell #3
Tumblr media
Zorro in Sacrilege #3 American Mythology Productions 2019 Written by Mike Wolfer Illustrated by Alex Miracolo Coloured by Beezzz Studio Lettered by Natalie Jane     Don Diego's vacation is far from relaxing. An accident in the lucrative tin mine on the Asistencia grounds kills several Native American workers, who are unceremoniously buried in the graveyard outside the Mission's walls. Later that night, a terrifying supernatural manifestation attacks and murders a monk within the sanctity of the chapel, while Muat's brother Lanu is whipped to death by the Spanish soldiers who are sworn to protect the Asistencia. Zorro jumps into action that night to investigate the mysterious murders. But inside the chapel, he comes face-to-face with a horrific, supernatural force that tells him that Zorro himself is the key to stopping the coming nightmare of possession and death within the walls of San Leticia Asistencia...     I love what these folks are doing with the Legend of Zorro! I mean at this point in time both the Spanish and Native American's believed strongly in the supernatural and the old gods, well the Native American's at least. So it is only natural that we would see Don Diego and his alter ego fighting these forces throughout his journey's on the continent. I am sure that back in the day it was considered unthinkable to do what we do now and so it is with great pleasure that I read these adventures as I feel that they are an extremely natural fit for the time, era and peoples of the land.     I am thoroughly enjoying the way that Mike is telling this story. The way that we see the plot & story development and the character development working so well together and being so essential to one another, as if one were Zorro the other Don Diego, is superb to see. With the addition of the pacing which picks things up beautifully which allows the release of information, revelations and the myriad of twists and turns to create a very quick feeling ebb & flow to the book. Now I like to talk about going off-script quite a bit but in this case we really aren't doing that instead the reader becomes to engrossed by what's happening on the page we don't have time to do anything else. Mike keeps us riveted on the pages and we just can't get enough.     Alex's work on the interiors is very comic book style oriented which is delightful. Still I would like to see a bit more finesse with the linework so it can really bring out more attention to detail. I mean there are moments like seeing the statue on page four that looks incredible and I want to see more like that! I wouldn't hurt to make the dead scarier and the spirits less cute either, just saying because this doesn't exactly evoke fear in anyone. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels does show a solid eye for storytelling. The book would also benefit from stronger use of backgrounds. The colour work however is delightful. There is some nice choices in colours and the various hues and tones being utilised to show shading. That night sky from the window was stunning. The dead flesh could've been creepier though or at least different than the colour of the soldiers shirts.      I am having a lot of fun with this story and how we see it unfold. In typical fashion we see someone who doesn't know of Zorro, a damsel who is not in distress per se and some corrupt soldiers as well those running the Asistencia. Secrets abound in this place where demons and the dead have free reign including inside the chapel which is supposed to be hallowed ground. Can Zorro stop the darkness from spreading or all who reside here doomed? Well next issue will bring us to the climax and close out this chapter and I can't wait to see what it's going to be.

Zorro in Galleon of the Dead #4
Tumblr media
Zorro in Galleon of the Dead #4 American Mythology Productions 2020 Written by Mike Wolfer Illustrated by Alessandro Miracolo Coloured by Beezzz Studio Lettered by Natalie Jane    Trapped aboard the rotting ship that sails between life and Hell itself, Zorro and Lady Zorro face the ultimate showdown against their unkillable foe, El Hijo del Muerte! Now saddled with the title of Captain of the ship of hideous horrors, Zorro must find a way to relieve himself of that duty if he is ever to return to the land of the living, and the key just might lie in the nightmarish, lower decks of the zombie-infested vessel! This one's the big finale, in a tale so chock-full of frights, plot twists, and action that you'll be gasping for breath as Zorro battles the beasts of hell on the Galleon of the Dead!    This has been a great story and it’s nice to see if finish off so strongly.  It’s been a minute since this started but honestly when a story is good and you remember everything you’ve read in it thus far you know that a small wait is well worth it.  Plus the story has Muat who after her adventure with Zorro took up the name and mantle to make a difference and help others like she was helped so I am in for her anytime and every time.    I am very much enjoying the way that this is being told.  The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceedingly well.  The character development that we see through the dialogue, the character interaction and how they act and react to the situations and circumstances that they encounter is extremely well rendered.  The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the action packed pages revealing more and more of the story we’re amazed at what this Galleon is capable of.    I like how we see this structured and how the layers within the story continue to grow, evolve and strengthen right up until the last page.  The layers contain the characterisation, the plot twists and motivations and some other interesting bits and while some work with the main arc they all add depth and complexity to the story.  How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is achieved extremely well.    I love the classic comic book style artwork that we see here.  The linework is nice, clean, crisp and tight and how the varying weights are being utilised to create the detail work is fantastic!  I am enjoying the creativity and imagination that is on display here as well.  I’d love to see more backgrounds being used as when we do see them they add so much to the moments and how they work within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the book marvellously.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling.  The colour work is beautifully rendered as well.  The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work show a solid eye for how colour works.     I’ve long been a proponent of how American Mythology has taken Zorro into the supernatural realm and with stories like this one it is easy to see why it feels so fresh, new and exciting.  Honestly because it really is.  Adding in Lady Zorro to the mix and the legacy of Zorro is firmly entrenched in the world both the physical and the mystical thanks to some smart, intelligent and witty writing along with great characterisation and superb interior artwork.
