Letters From Watson Liveblog - Apr. 30
The Stockbroker's Clerk, Part 2 of 2
Tumblr media
I don't think we've ever seen Holmes bite his nails before. This case must either make him more concerned than usual or he's developed new habits in Watson's absence.
Tumblr media
How odd and unexpected. I wonder what happened? Did Pinner's fake alter-ego brother die or something? Maybe that's how he's going to end the scam, by pretending that he needs to take the time to grieve.
Tumblr media
Pycroft is pretty quick on his feet with these names. Not to mention the places they are from being different too. That's a nice detail to add to make it more convincing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have to say, Holmes and Watson are absolutely killing it with these fake identities. I almost thought I was reading about completely different characters here, with Watson especially. They're truly embodying the spirit and soul of an accountant and a clerk.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A sudden, mysterious knocking noise, coupled with a low, gargling sound makes this story feel like it's taken a quick turn towards something Edgar Allen Poe-like.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah, this feels even more like Edgar Allen Poe, with the gargling noise being Pinner choking to death and the knocking noise being his heels repeatedly hitting the door. You could make a ghastly poem out of this.
Tumblr media
And look at that, Watson gets to do some doctor stuff. Looks like he has to work today after all.
Tumblr media
Were hiring arrangements mostly verbal back then? I would think that there would be some sort of contract and signature attached, even in the late 1880s or 90s, and more so for clerks and accountants and the like who would presumably be working with a lot of documents.
Tumblr media
This story has a surprisingly large amount of people pretending to be other people. Pinner pretended to be two brothers, Holmes and Watson got to pretend for a little bit, and the whole crux of the case is someone taking on Pycroft's identity.
Tumblr media
My question is how these guys even knew Mawson's office had hired Pycroft in the first place. Mawson's put out an advertisement, but responses were by letter only, so how did they know Pycroft was the one who got selected.
Tumblr media
Like the good ol' days back at Baker Street. Holmes could have read it aloud himself, hell he read out the headline, but no, Watson's the one who read the paper before so he gets to do it now.
Tumblr media
So there were brothers! I wonder if Pinner based the behavior of one of his fake identities on his actual brother then.
Tumblr media
And apparently the grief was genuine, which is sort of sweet, if not also harrowing that Pinner decided to kill himself by door hanging after his brother was arrested.
This was a nice story that ultimately got more interesting as it went on. I feel like the case could possibly have been extended to have Holmes and Watson actually go to Mawson's office to help in stopping the robbery, but it is what it is.

Beddington Lane Halt station & signal box c1935 by Frederick McLean Via Flickr: An old photograph of 'Beddington Lane Halt' signal box, signals, and single platform station. The station was originally named Beddington, was renamed Beddington Lane in 1887, in 1919 it became Beddington Lane Halt, then reverted back to Beddington Lane in 1969. The original negative is now part of the John Mann collection. If you know who the photographer was please send me a message and I will credit them. Ms Chapman: This isn’t an issue for Alberta, but I thought it was interesting, which is why I noted it down. At two degrees warming more than 70 per cent of Earth’s coastline will see sea levels rise by .2 metres. When you think about .2 metres – I still think in feet. Huh. What is that, like, two-thirds of a foot?
Member Irwin: Dude, you’re asking the wrong guy. Ask the doctor.
Ms Chapman: You were the teacher, though. Okay. Anyways, it seems like a small number, but in terms of the impact it can have on coastal flooding, beach erosion, and salinization of the water supply – and that’s one of the big risks. Did you secretly do the math there and then just not tell me?
Member Irwin: You’re right. You’re right.
Ms Chapman: Yeah. Okay. Good.

Ms Chapman: One thing I noticed was that one of the first lines of argument that was offered up by the bill sponsor was the Constitution, and the bill sponsor waxed poetic for quite some time about the glory days gone by when the Governor General was able to exercise the powers of reservation. Oh, to go back to the glory days before 1878. Apparently, in the years before 1878 it was common for the Governor General to intervene to use these powers of reservation and disallowance of federal legislation. It was a little bit weird for me – I’m going to be honest – to wax poetic about a time when we were a British colony and the Crown would intervene in the Legislature, but you know what? It’s not 1870 anymore. It’s 2023, and here in 2023 we . . .
An Hon. Member: It’s 2024.
Ms Chapman: It’s a good thing we don’t have to write cheques anymore, right? It is 2024.
