Kamala Harris 4 President: Is She ready 4 Prime Time?
Joe Biden has literally slipped on a banana peel. Following his dismal performance at the 1st Presidential Debate, he has made a series of blunders that now has him under a microscope. It's gotten so bad, that folks are criticizing the way he walks up the stairs of Air Force One... Biden made several appearances to shore up his Social Capital, but few were effective. From his interview w/ George Stephanopoulos, to his 'Big Boy NATO Summit' to his telephone interview on MSNBC's 'Morning Joe'; Joe Biden has raised more questions than providing answers. An increasing number of Congressional Democrats, Elites, & Big Money Donors- from Chuck Schumer, to Jeffrey Katzenberg, George Clooney & Rob Reiner are asking him to step down. Political Pundits across many platforms have expressed publicly how Joe Biden is weakening Congressional Democrats running for Re-Election.
Biden has been adamant about staying in Office, but has recently said that he's open to discussion. Black Politicians & Democratic Shills like Whoopi Goldberg, Roland Martin, Symone Sanders, D.L. Hughley & Joy Reid continue to Circle the Wagon, but hardcore Biden advocates like Joe Scarborough & Van Jones have admitted that his Poll #s are damaging the overall Democratic Party. The Question being asked is: if Joe Biden steps down, WHO is capable of defeating Donald Trump in the General Election? California Governor Gavin Newsome, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, & Maryland Governor Wes Moore have been tossed around; but none of them have enough National Recognition to compete against Trump. 'The View's' Sunny Hostin has stated that Black Women will abandon the Democratic Party if Kamala Harris is not chosen as the heir apparent, but is Kamala Harris 'Presidential Material'?
Presidential Politics IS a Blood Sport. When a Candidate runs for POTUS, their Record of Service is on full display. There is a reason why Kamala Harris hasn't been mentioned before now. Many assume that she is being left out because of her Race, but Political Pundits admit that NO ONE really likes her. Kamala has wore several hats during her Political Career, but she has few accomplishments to tout for her Years of Service. As District Attorney of San Francisco, Attorney General of California, & U.S. Senate Member, Kamala Harris has been detrimental to Black Californians. Her Record is one of disenfranchisement & incarceration of Blackfolk. Harris, Nancy Pelosi, & Dianne Feinstein share responsibility for the Current State of Black America in The Bay Area. She was originally touted as the '1st South Asian (i.e. Indian) American Woman elected into the U.S. Senate', but has somehow been mysteriously transformed into a 'Black Woman'.
For The Record, Kamala Harris is neither Afrikan American or Black. Her Mother is Brahmin & her Father is Brahmin & Irish Jamaican; her Father's Irish side were Slaveholders. She was born in Oakland & later relocated to Berkeley, after her parents separated. Kamala was bused to a predominantly White Elementary School, before her Mother relocated to an affluent Community in Montreal. She attended Junior High & High School in Montreal before returning to America, to attend Howard University. THIS is where Kamala's 'Black Experience' begins. Rumor has it that she became a Sweetheart of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. (a Kappa Diamond) & later pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Post Grad, Kamala returned to The Bay Area, where she became associated w/ Democratic Party Power Broker & former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown. The former Mayor positioned Kamala on a couple of Commissions (that paid $400K over 5Yrs) & her 1st run to become San Francisco District Attorney.
Kamala Harris has been very fortunate during her Political Career, but her tenure as Vice President has exposed her flaws. She's had a revolving door of Staffers that cite factions & infighting w/i her Camp. Harris has been described as crass & vulgar towards her Staff- dropping F- bombs & denigrating them during Meetings. Former Speech Writers say they were confounded by her inability to follow Scripts. Aside from Abortion Rights, no one can point to an Issue that Harris has championed w/ consistency. Her tenure as Vice President has been compared w/ Dan Quayle's. Joe Biden put Kamala in charge of the Southern Border, but he was forced to issue an Executive Order; to clean up her inability to stop the flood of Illegal Immigrants coming from All Four Corners of The World. Kamala Harris is not known for promoting Pet Policy Projects, like Al Gore or Michelle Obama; She's better known for:
Wearing Chuck Taylors w/ Pearls
Putting hot sauce on her Collard Greens & washing them in the bathtub (???)
Cos Playing Black Americans &
Cackling when she's flummoxed
Currently, Kamala Harris is a weaker opponent against Donald Trump, than Joe Biden. She's only being considered, because the Biden- Harris Campaign Fund can't be accessed if another group of Candidates are selected. Somewhere between $100M- $300M is at stake. A DNC Super PAC is withholding another $90M in anticipation of Biden stepping down. Michelle Obama's name has been tossed around as a potential Candidate for POTUS, but she has said on several occasions that she's NOT interested. I would be surprised if she changed her mind. Personally, I don't think ANY MAN can beat Donald Trump & the only Woman that could give Trump a Real Fight, is Tulsi Gabbard. She's a Generational Candidate that has the pedigree of Military Service, plus the Political & Social Capital needed to get Voters to the Voting Booths. Tulsi is far from being 'The Perfect Candidate', but People can visualize her having meaningful discussions w/ World Leaders. By contrast, Kamala Harris looks like a cartoon character on The World Stage; few actually believe that she can command the respect of Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, & EU Leaders.
At this point, Democrats are in a No Win situation. Joe Biden campaigned in 2020 as a One Term President, but now he dares ANYONE to take him on at the Democratic National Convention. His selfishness & egocentrism has damaged the Democratic Party's chance of holding on to The White House. He says that he wouldn't have chosen Kamala Harris to be his VP if she wasn't capable of being President, but We KNOW that he only chose her because Black Women DEMANDED a Black Female Running Mate, in return for their vote. Ironically, Kamala doesn't fill that slot figuratively or literally. She let Black Women know early in her 2020 Campaign that she wasn't going to do ANYTHING SPECIFICALLY for Black Americans. Like Joe Biden, Harris offered a 'Lift Act' that promised Blackfolk more of the same 'Rising Tide' Democratic jargon. Despite this, roughly 86% of Black Americans supported the Biden- Harris Ticket; hoping this Administration would reward their loyalty & support w/ Real Policy.
Like Joe Biden, Kamala Harris NEEDS the Black Vote to win the General Election. The Problem is, Democrats have NO INTENTION of offering anything tangible to Black America. Despite the Doom & Gloom scenarios being pushed by Democratic Shills, an increasing number of Black Americans are refusing to vote Blue w/o getting something tangible in return. Democratic Elites thought they could play 'Chicken' w/ Blackfolk, but are beginning to realize how serious We are. Black Democratic Shills have been trying to corral The Black Vote, but they don't have the same influence that they held in previous years. Kamala Harris didn't help her Cause, when she said: 'We all know about the 20 Acres & a Mule'... Her casual disregard of Black Specific Issues rivals Joe Biden's. The Fact that Democrats have been forced to admit Biden's physical & mental decline will set The Party back at least 4 Years.
As I said before, Black America sits in the Catbird Seat! The rest of the Country may dread a 2nd Trump Presidency, but it's just 'Another Day in The Life' for Us. Our Ancestors survived 8 Years of Woodrow Wilson & over 50 Years of J. Edgar Hoover. We KNOW what a Dictator looks like. We also know that Every City will burn before We comply w/ The Heritage Foundation's 'Wish List' known as Project 2025. We just have to Get On Code & Stand Our Ground. Unlike the Millions of Colonists that occupy This Land, We're INDIGENOUS & have a Spiritual Connection to it; Millennia of Blood & Bones in The Soil. Unlike the newcomers, Perseverance is in Our Genetic Memory. Donald Trump is just the Latest 'Flavor of The Month'... We already survived a Trump Administration.
The acknowledgement of Joe Biden's decline puts Democrats in a bad position so late into the Election Season. It's not even clear if Dems can take him off The Ballot in several States. The fact that Kamala Harris cannot make a seamless transition into The Oval Office is creating a Civil War w/i The Party. I heard someone classify this 'War' as a battle between Black Shills & White Donors; The Shills want Biden to Stay, while The Donors want him to Resign. If Kamala Harris was truly 'Ready for Primetime', Sunny Hostin wouldn't have to say anything- EVERYONE would be on The Same Page.
-Ultimately, Money Talks.

Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election through a successful tripartite subterfuge.
One, Biden never really campaigned. His handlers rightly assumed that the more the public and the media saw a debilitated Biden in the flesh, the less they would want him as president.
So, the Biden campaign used the COVID lockdowns to ensure that Biden stayed safe in his basement office.
Biden strategically distanced himself from disinterested journalists, using COVID as an excuse to avoid public appearances. It allowed him to run a 19th-century, front-porch sort of virtual campaign.
In his place, the liberal media, Democratic grandees, and the billionaire donor class served as Biden campaign surrogates—vastly outspending, out-advertising, and out-lawyering the underfunded incumbent Trump.
Second, again using COVID as a pretext, well-funded Democratic legal teams altered the voting laws during early 2020 in key swing states to encourage non-Election Day voting.
For the first time, majorities in many key states voted by mail-in/absentee ballots and during weeks of early voting.
We now know why the left was so motivated to push through radical balloting changes that were otherwise impossible prior to 2020 but have been mostly institutionalized since.
Non-Election Day ballots outnumbered Election Day ballots. They were far more likely to be cast by Democrats. And as the number of such ballots soared, the traditional rejection rate of non-Election Day ballots prior to 2020 fell—even as registrars were swamped.
Once obscure terms such as ballot harvesting and ballot curing became mainstream.
Ballot deadlines were extended. There was lax enforcement of incorrect ballot names and addresses or auditing the registrars’ rolls.
Rich liberal entities, such as Mark Zuckerberg and his $419 million in 2020 cash infusions, sought to absorb the work of state registrars. His aim was to “improve” voter turnout through partisan “assistance”—from funding drop boxes to monitoring non-Election Day ballots.
Three, in 2020, the enervated left-wing Joe Biden was reconstructed as a vigorous moderate “ol’ Joe Biden from Scranton.”
Biden’s stealth script was to provide a temperate veneer to the new hard-left Democratic Party.
His 2020 campaign claimed Joe was for “unity” and “moderation”—even as it camouflaged an otherwise extremist neo-socialist agenda to be implemented after November.
Can the Democrats repeat that winning formula for Kamala Harris in 2024?
Only partly.
Even without the excuse of COVID, Harris certainly will not agree to unscripted, ad hoc interviews with non-partisan journalists.
She is unable to speak extemporaneously and off the teleprompter without appearing childish.
Her handlers will ensure few opportunities for Harris to burst into cackling or to stream her puerile musings about yellow school buses or kindergarten geography.
Yet the third element of Biden’s 2020 strategy will be difficult to replicate.
The Bay Area leftist Harris—unlike the Biden of the 1980s and 1990s—never had any reputation, feigned or not, of being a “centrist” or “moderate.”
Her entire political career was one of pandering either to leftist Democrat voters in 2020 or ultra-liberal Californians in her statewide races.
She is on record of opposing fracking and off-shore drilling, private health care, border enforcement, and the traditional close U.S. relationship with Israel.
She proudly promoted the radical new green deal, defunding police forces, mandatory buybacks of private guns, and mass amnesties.
She gratuitously championed the swindler Jussie Smollett and his fraudulent claims of being a victim of systemic racism.
During the horrendous riots of 2020, she sought to raise bail for violent rioters and looters that had been arrested.
On CBS, she egged on the 2020 protests that had already turned violent with deaths, law enforcement injuries, arson, and mass looting—despite the pathetic efforts of partisan fact-checkers to claim otherwise.
Harris gushed of the turmoil: “They’re not going to stop. This is a movement, I’m telling you. They’re not going to stop, and everyone beware, because they’re not going to stop. They’re not going to stop before Election Day in November and they’re not going to stop after Election Day. They’re not going to let up and they should not, and we should not.”
What did Harris mean by “beware?”
Was the BLM- and Antifa-led mayhem really just a “movement?”
Why boast that the turmoil might be endless—both before and after Election Day?
And why connect the massive disruptions to the upcoming Election Day—unless she believes that unrest in the streets could weaken the election chances of the then incumbent president?
In sum, Harris, like Biden, is certainly capable of running a remote stealth campaign.
She will surely take advantage of 2020’s revolution in non-Election Day balloting.
Yet, unlike Biden, Harris has no credible moderate veneer—only an unapologetic radical past and a corpus of hard-left boasts.
So, 2024 will hinge on whether Republicans will expose Harris’s lifelong, hard-left ideology and extremist agendas.
She is a poor substitute for the successful bait-and-switch 2020 con of “ol’ Joe Biden,” the fake moderate “uniter” from Scranton.
I'm hoping that she shows her TRUE colors sometime during the campaign

Help the World: Eat, Drink, and Dance the Day Away at the 16th Annual Stone Crab JAM™ Music Festival November 4
Crystal River, FL – The sixteenth annual Stone Crab JAM™ Music Festival for local, regional, national, and international charities and non-profits is Saturday, November 4 from 12 noon until 10 p.m. in the historic, and bayside streets of charming Crystal River, Florida. Presented each year by the Rotary Club of Crystal River, Kings Bay Charitable Foundation this ever-growing event shares 100% of Stone Crab JAM™ Music Festival proceeds with area charities, 501c3’s, scholarships, and more. The proceeds donated from this one-day event for the 2022- 2023 fiscal year were $138,388. The first Stone Crab JAM™ Music Festival was held in 2008 as a Club fundraising effort to protect Three Sisters Springs lands from being developed. The proceeds of $35,000 were donated to the City of Crystal River’s efforts to purchase the land. Today, Three Sisters Springs is a wildlife refuge for hundreds of West Indian manatees to call their winter home and an educational visitors center that teaches about these gentle creatures and how we can help maintain their environment. Other projects supported by that first Stone Crab JAM™ Music Festival included improvements to Copeland Park, Kings Bay Park, and ongoing projects to remove Lyngbya from Kings Bay. Sixteen Years of Celebrating Stone Crab Season while Helping Charities Each year, the JAM Festival grew. Every year, thousands of attendees enjoyed “dancing in the streets” as they strolled the open-air, open-container venue with beer, seltzers, and wines while shopping for crafts, arts, and more from hundreds of vendors, and tasting a real variety of delicious foods - including, of course, stone crab claws. All while listening to six great bands playing on three separate stages throughout the venue. The Stone Crab JAM™ Music Festival celebrates the harvest season for the Florida Stone Crab. This festival offers the largest pounds/tonnage of available stone crab claws in the region. Hundreds of vendors, six bands on three stages, and kids zone make the Stone Crab JAM™ Music Festival a "must-go" event for the Nature Coast. Image by Crystal River Photography. Dance in the streets to six excellent bands playing a variety of music throughout Crystal River’s historic downtown and beautiful bayside. This is a full-fledged one-day street party with a Kids Zone, food trucks,150+ vendors, and more. Best of all – the proceeds go to nonprofit Citrus County organizations. Six Great Bands on Three Stages: Dance the Day and Night Away This fun-filled event starts at noon, and the music kicks off at 1 p.m. with The TOMMY ROXX Band - Southern Rock Tribute on Stage One, located at Citrus Ave, & Hwy 19/98 North. Autobus Park №7: Kyiv’s Abandoned Transport Circus
Kyiv might be Europe’s single greatest city for late-twentieth century Modernist architecture. It boasts many wild, eclectic, and vividly imaginative examples of the style, built during the height of Soviet monument-mania. Though amongst its steel and concrete marvels of Soviet-era architecture, one of Kyiv’s most striking modern buildings has, in recent years, also become one of the city’s most problematic ruins. Autobus Park №7 – once the pride of the Ukrainian transport industry – exists today as a decaying morgue for almost a thousand abandoned buses.

The design challenge of the Autobus Park №7 was to create an efficient depot capable of housing and maintaining a fleet of some 500 buses, in an urban environment where building space was limited. Had the building been constructed like a warehouse, or a factory, using a square plan and a regular pillar-based solution for supporting the roof, it was estimated that the total size of the building would have needed to be at least 4,000 square metres. However, an ingenious solution was proposed instead.

The chief engineers on the project, V. A. Kozlov and S. I. Smorgon, were responsible for the idea of using a cable-suspended roof. They took their inspiration from circus buildings – the cylindrical concrete-and-steel constructions which were by this time a ubiquitous feature in cities throughout the Soviet Union. By designing the building on a circular plan, and suspending concrete roof panels on cables strung between a central support pillar and the outer walls, it was found that both space and construction costs could be significantly reduced. Moreover, this design, with its organic, circular shape, lent itself more to what was then considered a modern and humanistic work environment for employees – while its form, reminiscent of circuses and Palaces of Culture, presented the bus depot not as a bland, functional box, but rather a community venue.

Kozlov and Smorgon built a 1:10 scale model to test their idea. The central support pillar would be 18 metres high, a tower of reinforced concrete with a diameter of 8 metres, consisting of 0.3-metre thick concrete walls around an inner support of solid steel with a cross-section of 0.32 x 0.22 metres. Attached to the top of this pillar, were 84 radial cables – steel ropes with a diameter of 65 millimetres. Each of these cables was able to support a weight of up to 350 tons, and the roof would be constructed on top of them: a suspended tent dome, created from concrete plates, and with a total diameter of 160 metres.
On its completion in 1973, the building was considered an engineering marvel – its hanging roof was one of the largest ever constructed, and this system of support reduced the building’s necessary size from 40,000 square metres (the estimate for a pillar-supported roof) to a footprint of just 23,000 square metres.

As much as possible, the design aimed to take advantage of natural light. The concrete plates of the roof were fitted with portholes, most of which were concentrated close around the main support tower. In the outer wall, upright glass cylinders were installed between concrete panels, serving as sturdy support pillars that both insulated the building against the cold outside, and allowed refracted light to shine into the wings of the building. This solution proved particularly robust, and most of these glass pillars have survived intact since the early 1970s until this day. Between them, these design choices resulted in an interior space and working area that enjoyed bright sunlight during the day, thus minimising the additional cost of electrical lighting.

Once operational, Autobus Park №7 was the largest vehicle depot in the Soviet Union – and it was rumoured, potentially the largest anywhere in the world. It served as more than just a garage, though. It was the base of operations for the entire fleet of buses serving the capital, including city buses, intercity buses, and also those working international routes, to Germany, Poland, Belarus and Russia. The building was fully air-conditioned, it featured a four-gate vehicle wash, and a mechanised repair bay fitted with conveyor belt systems. The building had a staff of 1,500 workers, and featured workers’ canteens, as well as a computing centre too – where teams calculated staff salaries and work shifts, as well as designing and optimising bus routes.
Sadly, the glory days of Autobus Park №7 would be short-lived. Following the break-up of the Soviet Union, many of the fleet’s international routes were discontinued. Services were gradually reduced through the 1990s, into the 2000s, while meanwhile, the building was increasingly used to store wrecked vehicles awaiting repair or decommissioning. The reduction of domestic bus routes in 2005 was a further blow, and eventually, in 2015, the autopark closed its doors for good – the building slipping into disrepair, as the once-proud circus was steadily transformed into a scrapyard.
Since it was officially closed in 2015, almost 1,000 buses have been stored inside the abandoned building. | Photo © Darmon Richter
Today, Autobus Park №7 in Kyiv seems to be locked in a downward spiral of decay. The building itself is nothing short of an engineering marvel, an extraordinary work of architecture that supporters have suggested could be adapted now into a museum, or even a film studio. In April 2018 a petition was registered on the website of Kyiv City Council, calling for the building’s preservation – but it only received 321 votes, a long way short of its target of 10,000 signatures. Even had it been successful though, good intentions don’t count for much without action and intent on the part of Kyiv City Council; where currently, any talks of potential preservation are being blocked at a bureaucratic level.
For 25 years the building has been owned by the company Kyivpastrans (‘Kyiv Passenger Transportation), whose deputy general director, Sergey Litvinov, has said that Autobus Park №7 poses an imminent risk of collapse, and, given the cost and scale of such a project, would be almost impossible to save. Meanwhile, other former transport depots around the city have already been bulldozed to make room for new residential blocks and shopping centres. Many property developers would jump at the chance of getting their hands on this 23,000-square metre plot – and from the perspective of the current owners, it is probably a more attractive financial proposition. The building is neither listed nor protected, so were it empty, there would be nothing to stop the owners from knocking it down overnight.
This rooftop capsule offered a panoramic view of the 180-metre diameter suspended roof of Autobus Park №7. | Photo © Darmon Richter
However, for the time being all parties are locked into a kind of stalemate over the building’s contents. The estimated 903 rusting vehicles stored inside (including LAZ, Volvo, Ikarus, and various other brands of urban and long-distance buses) pose a major administrative problem. These buses cannot easily be removed, or scrapped, as technically they are yet to be decommissioned from service. A new regulation that was introduced into Ukrainian law in 2013 complicated the bureaucratic procedure and created a backlog; so that all of the vehicles inside Autobus Park №7 today are – officially, on paper – still in service and awaiting audit. As such they cannot legally be taken apart for scrap, and right now, there’s nowhere else to store them in the city but here.
The vehicles have still not been officially decommissioned under Ukrainian law – which means they cannot be scrapped until the necessary paperwork is processed. | Photo © Darmon Richter
So for now, it’s a waiting game. If Kyivpastrans and Kyiv City Council are able to solve the bureaucratic headache of their vehicle decommissioning procedure, remove the abandoned buses, and then find the will, not to mention the funding, to undertake the colossal project of preserving Autobus Park №7 (while turning down more lucrative offers from property developers in the process), then perhaps the building might yet be saved. But in the meanwhile, the circus roof is sagging, and young trees are already sprouting from cracks in the concrete.
It may just be that this building, an engineering marvel of the Soviet period, having failed to find its place in a post-Soviet world, is doomed to go the same way as the regime that built it.

A thought experiment on Silicon Valley’s third era
[ read the tweetstorm if you’re in a rush]
June 19th marks the end of American slavery, July 4th American Independence and July 14th the storming of the Bastille. It’s also my 40th birthday, and I’m exploring what we can learn from the past to help navigate today’s struggles for racial justice and economic freedom.
1940-1980: “Atoms” and the military-industrial-labor complex
My dad arrived in the Bay Area in 1970-1971 to get his PhD at Berkeley - just as the area was being rebranded as Silicon Valley.
Free from the stifling hierarchy of the East, the Bay was America’s center for social, technical and institutional change. Black Panthers policed the police in Oakland, shiny BART trains crossed the Bay to SF where the Gay Rights movement was flourishing. My family tree waited a millennia for India to recognize intercaste marriage. My parents would see radical social change in America across every axis in a single generation. Bold leadership in the 60s expanded civil rights and embraced immigration. They (and I) benefited greatly from an economic and social foundation that had been laid over many decades.
Caterpillar Tractor - founded in the Bay Area - embodied the spirit of this era. It went from liberating France in WW2 to building a massive middle class, unionized labor force. Cat later moved its headquarters to Peoria, Illinois - because in this era, cities across the country - not just the coasts - had the ability to compete. Since WW2, America pursued an intentional strategy of geographically broad-based economic development - via highways, airline regulation and distributed national labs.
Caterpillar didn’t just give Peoria a chance, it also gave my dad a chance to put down roots in America by sponsoring his green card. There was no H1B limbo. The nexus of military, industry and labor unions brought immigrants, Women and Blacks into the workforce - with paid apprenticeships (not exorbitant higher education) and technically-focused community colleges paving the way for millions. My mom learned COBOL while her toddlers played in the back of class. Even Hunter’s Point in SF was vibrant during much of this period. (Of course, it was far from a halcyon era - the war machine had massive human cost globally and civil rights were far from evenly enforced in America.)
And while atoms reigned supreme during this era, the military and government patiently invested risk capital in advanced manufacturing, semiconductors and software/networking to prepare America for its future.
1980-2020: “Bits” and global capital, jackrocks and polarization
In 1980, Reagan was elected President - and I was born. This would also be the peak of private sector labor employment in the US and the beginning of global capital (and the multinational companies they backed) as the leading force in forging the social contract.
They promised us that countries with McDonald’s would never go to war with each other. Indeed the Berlin Wall fell, Asian laborers got jobs and Americans could buy cheap stuff at WalMart. Global capital (bits) put atoms inside shipping containers and sent them around the world - abstracting consumers from the manufacturing base.
The writing was on the wall for unions.
As a middle schooler, I saw Cat management and labor (UAW) locked into a multi-year strike over the future. The front line was not in a boardroom or on the picket line. It was neighborhoods, schools and community groups. I remember when a classmate whose dad was in the union talked about how folks in the factory were peeing on effigies of management - including my dad.
Naturally I knew which side I was on. Cat needed wage concessions and freedom to operate to be globally competitive. I’d read Akio Morita, TPS and Lee Iacocca. I worried about Japan Inc. eating our lunch (yes as a 12 year old!) UAW workers and families were much more grounded. They needed a livelihood and wanted certainty for their future.
---
War continued to wage into high school. We came home one day to find “jackrocks” outside of our driveway - a tool used in feudal Japan to thwart the advancing armies - horses, chariots - etc. of those in power. In <60 years, Caterpillar had gone from transforming America’s agrarian society to becoming the enemy of American workers. We had the GOP’s Contract with America (stored in my Trapper Keeper) and Clinton signing NAFTA within a couple years. Both parties supported global capital and global capital supported both parties. Maybe jackrocks worked better than voting?
Corporate America soon figured out that if your workers were in China, Mexico or the South, it’s harder for them to stick jack rocks in your driveway. If your kids go to private school or you live in a quasi-private suburb, they’ll be insulated from the wrath of the have-nots in heavily policed, declining urban centers. No peeing on your effigy or having your kid hear about it!
---
After college, I became an analyst at Bain & Company. Once an auto parts company hired us to do a “portfolio review”. I meticulously compared the costs of building mirrors in Eastern Michigan or Malaysia - creating a zero defect Excel model. Guess which location won? The auto parts company - like Cat - had the freedom to choose where to put jobs.
But what freedom did the workers have? Marie Antoinette once said “let them eat cake”. The elites of our era now say “let them move”. Social capital is critical for folks navigating change. The educated elite take the portability of social capital (embedded in college degrees and iMessage threads) as a given.
But place and social capital are deeply intertwined especially if you’re poor or a minority. While the deep introspection elites once had during 2016 has now been paved over by new crises, we should never forget that there’s a cost to society of losing its manufacturing base and jobs. How do you model the costs of broken families, drug addiction and a polarized electorate in Excel?
---
I grew disillusioned with management by spreadsheet. But I saw a bright spot on the horizon: tech. I remember opening my first iPod, getting 1000 songs in my pocket and believing that America had a shot at leading a new generation of consumer electronics when everyone a decade earlier had written us off in favor of the Japanese. Perhaps tech could bring jobs and prosperity back to the country? I wanted to be part of it.
So I moved to the Valley in 2004 and joined a VC fund. I saw how the VC funding model that Silicon Valley was built on incentivizes high-risk, high-leverage and massive-scale. It encourages companies to cherry-pick top-end talent (immigrants, marquee college grads) to build the differentiated bits. Pick the highest leverage point in the stack, outsource everything else - by building in China and/or pushing the last-mile to an ecosystem that you can control at arms length.
Tech companies could more than pay back the largely fixed costs of software / semiconductor design from the large and homogenous American market. This dynamic attracted massive amounts of private risk capital and enabled aggressive expansion abroad. This model didn’t work for everything (I got burned with cleantech) - but it worked amazingly well for broad swaths of enterprise software, consumer services and marketplaces. I saw how tech could be an incredible lever for wealth creation. But every visit back home to the Rust Belt made me wonder - wealth creation for whom?

2020+ - A thought experiment on institutional innovation and putting people first
July 14, 2020 - Q2 Earnings - CEO, MEGA TECH CORP - Hi everyone. These aren’t normal times. We’re not going to talk about our 10Q on this call. We’re here to talk about the next 10 years. So if you’re here for DAUs, ARR or CPC, you can drop off now.
We’ve been doing a lot of thinking about the race, health and economic crises our country faces. Over the last few weeks, I’ve asked our exec team to leave their homes, their Zoom calls, their DoorDash deliveries - to join protests and explore our community through new eyes.
Race & Place: On Juneteenth, we biked from Sheraton Place to Hunters Point to Tanforan. We saw the real life impact of redlining, mass incarceration of Blacks and the lack of jobs from decades ago - and how our headquarters sustain - rather than disrupt - the region’s policies of de facto segregation. We also remembered how political demagogues once imprisoned our neighbors of Japanese descent. We see today how their rhetoric affects our Black neighbors and colleagues. What might it do tomorrow to folks without legal status in ag/service industries that California depends or the H1Bs we depend on? What does diversity & inclusion mean in this context?
Jobs: The next Friday we biked from SRI to PARC to Sunnyvale and Moffett Field. Our industry once dreamed of a bicycle for the mind and embraced technical education and apprenticeship as a path in the door for Women and Blacks. Meanwhile we’ve pushed vast swaths of work to contractors or platform-mediated transactions - making it harder to use up-skilling as a talent lever like manufacturing employers did in the last era. What’s the impact on income mobility? At what point will 40 million unemployed Americans affect our share prices and the stability of society?
Climate: On Independence Day, we biked on the Bay Trail past landfills, superfund sites and the 101 - alongside poor and minority neighborhoods with terrible health outcomes. We talked about the Bay Area weather forecast for 2060 “fire with a chance of flooding”. We passed abandoned railways and dreams of regional transport - the result of which is folks commuting hours each way from the central valley to work service jobs in our campuses. We wondered about the long run political consequences of isolating our employee base inside the WiFi confines of a private bus network. Where is the voting base to drive institutional change? How many axles or tires will our commuter buses need to keep them safe from jackrocks on the 101?
Health: Last week, we rode from the old Permanente cement quarry to 101 (built by the same cement workers.) We talked about how Kaiser - a private employer of low-skilled workers - internalized their healthcare needs, pursued disruptive innovation and faced fierce clashes with the medical establishment. We thought about how COVID is exposing the brittleness of our employee’s isolation inside a private insurance bubble. No one can be healthy in a pandemic without competent public health infrastructure. Meanwhile, the growing cost of private healthcare makes it harder for tech - let alone the rest of the country - to employ American workers across the wage spectrum - exacerbating job loss and instability.
And as we spoke with others, we saw how the issues that Silicon Valley faces are not unique to one metropolitan area or one industry. It just happens to be the ultimate archetype of Global Capitalism and de facto segregated American metros.
What we now see - more clearly than ever - is that our entire company, our entire industry, our entire Valley - is built on a flawed foundation.
We can no longer just focus on the magical software bits and hope someone else figures out racial equity, employment, climate and health. This is Joel Spolsky’s Law of Leaky Abstractions on the ultimate scale. The abstractions are failing - and we’re seeing bugs and unintended consequences all around us. And the more we invest to deal with one-off bugs, the more likely we are to calcify change and imprison ourselves inside a failing stack.
It’s like we decided to build the world’s notification service on Ruby on Rails - or building an iPhone competitor on Windows CE. Fail Whale everywhere. Unfortunately, America’s democratic institutions are in poor condition. They are struggling to deal with inequality let alone looming environmental disaster. A polarized electorate - particularly at the national level - leads to populism and makes it hard for these institutions to execute meaningful, long-term plans.
We talk a lot about speech, misinformation, fairness of targeted ads etc. But it’s becoming clear that UX, linear algebra/training data and monetization in our products is just the tip of the spear to address polarization. We believe polarization is a product of the underlying conditions of civil rights, education, health and climate debt that affect Americans differentially based on race, wealth, neighborhood and region. e.g. If we care about justice, how far does focusing on the fairness of employment ads get us in a world when many people lack the skills and negotiating power to secure a living wage?
So will today’s peaceful protests for racial justice expand into tomorrow’s revolution(s) for economic freedom? If you don’t think things are bad now, think about what happens when the stimulus checks run out. Take a look at the amount of debt in the public sector, use any imagination about COVID, work out what happens to their tax base / pension returns and consider the impact on public services, public servants and their votes. MMT better be a real thing. Maybe we didn’t start these fires, but that refrain won’t save us when the flames come our way.
We’re done debating why we need to act. It’s clear America needs our help. Let’s talk about how we’re going to rise to the occasion. Our mantra will be “internalize, innovate, institutionalize”.
First, we’re going to internalize our problems. I’m here to tell you that issues of racial and economic justice are not just moral issues but they’re financial issues. Racial debt, education debt, health debt, climate debt will hit us harder and harder each year. (By the way, revolution probably won’t be great for your DCF models.) So we’re going to recognize these off-balance sheet liabilities - which amount to a few hundred billion in the US alone over the next 10 years for a company at our scale.
Second, we’re going to innovate against these systemic problems - but our only shot at making progress is if we realign the entire company’s mission to address them. This is not about optics. This is not about philanthropy. This is not another bet. We’re putting all our chips behind one bet - America. It's the country that backed us in the first place, it's where most of our people are and most of our profits. The job for our existing products, platforms and cash flows will be to advance four areas: place / race, skilling / manufacturing, health / food and climate / mobility - starting in America. The board will measure me based on job creation and diversity. It should go without saying that we’re pausing dividends and buybacks for the foreseeable future. Every dollar will serve our mission. Every senior leader will need to sign up for our new mission - and those who choose to stay will receive a new, back-end loaded, 10 year vesting schedule. We want them focused on the long-term health of society - not the whims of Robinhood day traders or strengthening the moats of existing products. We will need to invent entirely new ways to operate and ship products. As Joel Spolsky said, “when you need to hire a programmer to do mostly VB programming, it’s not good enough to hire a VB programmer, because they will get completely stuck in tar every time the VB abstraction leaks”. We need engineers, designers and product managers that will look deep into the stack, confront the racial, job access, health and climate debts that our products, our companies and our communities are built on top of. This is not about CYA process to protect cash cows or throwing things over the fence to policy. We will need to innovate across technical, cultural and organizational lines. This requires deep understanding and curiosity. This will bring more scrutiny to our company - not less. Not everyone’s going to be on board - so for the next 12 months, we’re giving folks a one-time buyout if they want to leave.
Third, we can’t do any of this by ourselves. The problems are too big. Our role will be to provide enlightened risk capital (from our balance sheet or by re-vectoring operating spend) alongside R&D, product, platform leverage to help leaders and innovators pursue solutions in these areas. Of course we will work with our peers and the public sector wherever possible - buying/R&D consortia, public-private partnerships, trusts, etc. But the new era and landscape demands that we explore institutional models beyond global capital/startups, labor unions, NGOs or government. We need models that can more flexibly align people and purpose, that innovate on individualized vs. socialized risk/reward - and that ultimately help build and sustain local, social capital. It’s difficult to say what these will look like - but increasingly figuring this out will be existential for our core business too. Right now, it doesn’t matter if you’re designing the best cameras in Cupertino or the best way to see their snaps in Santa Monica - we’re all just building layers of an attention stack for global capital. Our Beijing competitors have figured this out. ByteDance is already eating our lunch. They’re using the same tech inputs as us - UX, ML and large-scale systems - which are now a commodity - but with vastly lower consequences for the content they show - creating a superior operating / scaling model. They’re not internalizing social or political cost.
What we need in this era is the accumulation stack - where each interaction builds social capital. This is not about global likes. This is about local respect. We’ll create competitive advantage when we build products that reach across race / economic lines to harness America’s amazing melting pot and do so in ways that build livelihoods / property rights for creators and stakeholders.
With this operating model in place, we’re committing to fundamental change in four areas:
Place & Race - We’re done with de facto segregation. Over the next 10 years, 100% of our jobs will be in diverse communities that embrace inclusive schooling, policing, housing and transit policies. (Starting tomorrow, we’re putting red lines on our maps around towns with exclusionary zoning.) This is not about privatizing cities or an HQ2-style play to extract concessions. This is about investing our risk capital and our reputation to innovate alongside government. How do we bring world-class education to neighborhoods with concentrated poverty? What is the future of digital/hybrid charter schooling? Unbundled, community-driven public safety? We’ll embrace “remote-first” as a means to this end. The Bay will become one physical node alongside others (e.g. Atlanta, DC, LA) creating an Interstate Knowledge System that develops diverse talent across the country. We’re going to coordinate our investment with leading peers - since after all, this isn’t about cost savings or cherry-picking. It’s about broadening our country’s economic base.
Skilling & Manufacturing - We will 10x the tech talent pool in 10 years - by inventing new apprenticeship models that bring women, minorities and the poor into the workforce. We’ll start with our existing contractor base, convert them to new employment models with expanded benefits and paths for upward mobility. Next, we will invent new productivity tools for all types of workers - from the front office to mobile work to call center - that brings the power of AI and programming to everyone. These will be deeply tied into new platforms for work designed from the bottom-up to build social and financial capital for individual workers and teams. Last, we’re going to manufacture most of our hardware products - from silicon all the way to systems - entirely in the US within 10 years. This will require massive investment, collaboration and innovation. It may require a revolution in robotics - but we will pursue this in a way that makes the American worker competitive - not a commodity to be automated away. If we’re successful, the dividends of our investment here will have massive spillover benefits to every other sector of manufacturing in the US - autos, etc. - including ones we have yet to dream up.
Health & Food - We’re not going to tolerate a two-class system for healthcare anymore. As we convert our contract workforce to new employment models, we’re going to have to innovate on the fundamental quality/cost paradigm across our benefit stack. This may feel like a step down but it will put us (and the rest of society if we’re successful) on a fundamentally better long-term trajectory. Food is part of Health, and we’re going to innovate there too. Free food for employees is not going to come back post-COVID. Instead, we’ll use our food infrastructure to bootstrap cooperatively-owned cloud kitchens. We’ll provide capital to former contractors - mostly Black and Hispanic - to invest and own these. We’ll build platforms to help them sell food to employees (partly subsidized), participate in new “food for health” programs and eventually disrupt the extractive labor practices we see across food, grocery and delivery.
Climate & Mobility - Lastly, we’ll be imposing a carbon tax on all aspects of our own operations - which we’ll use to “fund” innovation in this space - with a primary focus on job creation. This is an area where we’re going to be looking far beyond our four walls from the beginning. As a first step, we’re teaming up with Elon and Gavin Newsom to buy PG&E out of bankruptcy and restructure it as a 21st century “decentralized” utility. It will accelerate the electrification of mobility - financing networked batteries for buses, cars and bikes along with charging infrastructure - and leading a massive job creation program focused on energy efficiency. Speaking of mobility, private buses aren’t coming back after COVID. Instead, we’re teaming up with all of our peers to create a Bay-wide network of electric buses (with bundled e-bikes) that will service folks of all walks of life - including our own employee base. Oh and one more thing - we’re bringing together the world’s most advanced privacy/identity architecture and computational video/audio to bake public health infrastructure directly into the buses. For COVID and beyond. None of this is a substitute for competent, democratically accountable regional authorities. This is us investing risk capital on behalf of society - with the goal of empowering these authorities. Yes the New York Times will have a field day with this. Maybe in time they’ll leave their bubble, enter the real world, see the sorry state of their institutions - the behavioral health and infrastructure crises on their crumbling streets - and get on board. Until then, our job is to be patient longer than they can be inflammatory.
Open technology for global progress - While we have to prioritize America given the scale of problems, the intent is not to abandon the rest of the world or hold back it’s progress. We feel the opposite - that over the coming decades each country’s technology sectors will thrive. To get there, we will continue to invest patiently - hiring, training, partnering, investing and innovating - but with a clear north star to help each country develop local leaders in new areas. Long-term, we’ll continue to contribute open technology that others can build upon.
America should be the proverbial city on a hill for everyone - not a metaverse for the rich with the poor dying in the streets. We don’t have much time so we’re getting to work now. See you next quarter.
----
This call may be imaginary but none of this is sci-fi or requires MMT. What it requires is us to care. To act. Join me on bike rides to explore our past and discuss what tangible actions Silicon Valley’s leading companies can take in the coming quarters and years. Logistics here for rides on June 19, June 26, July 2 and July 10!

The market for face masks (Washington Post) Alexis Wong, a Hong Kong-based trader who’s been exporting medical masks since the early days of the covid-19 crisis, says the business brings out every species of crook. But she likes to joke that the market for the iconic N95 mask is in perfect balance. “You have buyers with no money and sellers with no product,” she says. The international market for desperately needed medical masks is riddled with fraud. Up and down the supply chain, from factories to hospitals, opportunists are benefiting from the chaotic market as prices have quintupled. Rampant price gouging and fraud has provoked dozens of lawsuits and hundreds of cease-and-desist orders, from major mask manufacturers as well as state attorneys general. While profiteers and crooks make their fortunes, medical workers across the United States are rationing masks, recycling them and treating infected patients without them. The federal government has taken steps to address the shortages, but emergency management experts say the efforts were distressingly inadequate.
Fast in, first out: Denmark leads lockdown exit (Reuters) Four weeks after Denmark began easing its lockdown, Danes on Monday returned to cafes and restaurants, confident that the coronavirus outbreak is under control. Denmark last month became the first country in Europe to reopen schools, day-care centres and smaller businesses. It did not see a subsequent rise in COVID-19 cases. “The quick shutdown and the fact that Danes actually listened to messages from authorities about good hygiene and social distancing are the main reasons we’ve come this far,” said Hans Jorn Kolmos, a professor in clinical microbiology at the University of Southern Denmark. Unlike the French and Italians, Danes are less likely to hug and kiss as a form of greeting, which has also been a factor in limiting the spread, Kolmos said.
French-German pact (Worldcrunch) The surprise announcement of a massive pact between France and Germany to lead Europe’s response to the COVID-19 crisis marks a historic agreement, writes Lucie Robequain of Paris-based daily Les Echos. Germany’s decision to accept the principle of a common debt for European countries, signals the birth of a new union of solidarity, which is essential to claim the title of superpower. By accepting the principle of a mutual debt within the European Union, Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel have taken a decisive step in building a united Europe: A union based on solidarity, capable of transcending the particular interests of each individual member. A union capable of holding its own against the two superpowers, China and the United States.
Beaches, nightclubs? Europe mulls how to get tourists back (AP) The Mediterranean resort town of Ayia Napa (Cyprus) is known for its boisterous parties. Each summer, thousands of young foreign tourists pack the dance floors of its nightlife district after a day at the beach. But the pandemic silenced the exuberant Napa Strip district as the island nation of Cyprus went into a lockdown to halt the spread of the coronavirus. Now nightclub owners wonder when social distancing rules will be eased enough for the party to resume—and what those new parties will look like. Across southern Europe, in places where tourism drives much of the economy, officials are weighing how to entice travelers to come back, even while the pandemic remains a threat. Social distancing rules may work in restaurants, but that’s not likely to solve the quandary facing Ayia Napa’s nightclubs. Tourists in the near future will have to navigate a different set of expectations, routines and rules to counter the virus.
Global worries as infections spike in Russia, Brazil, India (AP) New coronavirus cases have been spiking from India to South Africa to Mexico in a clear indication that the pandemic is far from over, while Russia and Brazil now sit behind only the United States in the number of reported infections. The surges come even as much of Asia, Europe and scores of U.S. states have seen enough progress in their fight against the virus to focus on how best to reopen their economies. U.S. autoworkers, French teachers and Thai mall workers are among the hundreds of thousands of employees back on the job with new safety precautions. Russia registered 9,263 new cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to nearly 300,000 infections—about half of them in Moscow. Latin America has seen more than 483,400 confirmed coronavirus cases and 30,900 dead to date. The largest number of infections are in Brazil, which became the world’s third worst-hit county Monday evening with more than 250,000 infections. In India, coronavirus cases have surged past 100,000, and infections are rising in the home states of migrant workers who fled cities and towns during a nationwide lockdown when they lost their jobs.
India and Bangladesh prepare for monster cyclone as pandemic rages (Washington Post) India and Bangladesh are preparing to evacuate up to 3 million people in the path of a potentially devastating cyclone, a challenge made even more daunting by the rising number of coronavirus infections in both countries. Cyclone Amphan is expected to slam into the river delta at the top of the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday local time, bringing dangerous winds, heavy rain, surging tides and flooding. It is currently considered a “super cyclone,” only the second such storm in the area since 1999, although forecasters believe it will weaken slightly before making landfall. The pandemic is intensifying the difficulty of preparing for the storm. India has more than 100,000 confirmed coronavirus cases while Bangladesh has 25,000. Now those vulnerable to the storm are facing the unprecedented combination of a natural disaster together with a pandemic. Some evacuees say they’re frightened of catching the virus in emergency shelters, where they may face hours in enclosed spaces with little ability to maintain distance from other people.
U.S.-China Feud Over Coronavirus Erupts at World Health Assembly (NYT) A meeting of the World Health Organization that was supposed to chart a path for the world to combat the coronavirus pandemic instead on Monday turned into a showcase for the escalating tensions between China and the United States over the virus. President Xi Jinping of China announced at the start of the forum that Beijing would donate $2 billion toward fighting the coronavirus and dispatch doctors and medical supplies to Africa and other countries in the developing world. The contribution, to be spent over two years, amounts to more than twice what the United States had been giving the global health agency before President Trump cut off American funding last month, and it could catapult China to the forefront of international efforts to contain a disease that has claimed at least 315,000 lives. But it was also seen—particularly by American officials—as an attempt by China to forestall closer scrutiny of whether it hid information about the outbreak to the world. Other world leaders, in their remarks to the assembly, criticized the lack of unity in fighting the pandemic and, without naming any one country, urged nations to set aside their differences.
Parts of China’s northeast under lockdown (Bloomberg) Some 108 million people in China’s northeast region are being plunged back under lockdown conditions as a new and growing cluster of infections causes a backslide in the nation’s return to normal. In an abrupt reversal of the re-opening taking place across the nation, cities in Jilin province have cut off trains and buses, shut schools and quarantined tens of thousands of people. The strict measures have dismayed many residents who had thought the worst of the nation’s epidemic was over.

Gibraltar had been and gone. It was far too quick, the three days spent there flying by before you could fully grasp onto them, but they were still incredible . The first day had been wandering around and then an incredible dinner at the restaurant Tony recommended but you’d found some different things to do the past two days. You spent one atop Gibraltar Rock complete with a cable car ride, monkeys and Steve getting his sunglasses stolen. The final day was spent on the beach, lying on towels side by side, splashing into the sea and then running out again, the sand sticking awkwardly to your feet and legs. Steve stole you both some sunbeds after that and you spent the rest of the day sipping on soft drinks through straws, sunbathing either in silence or in quiet chatter, splashing each other in the sea and playing frisbee on the sand.
It felt like true peace.
You’d had to get a shuttle to Malaga in order to fly to your next destination. When there, it felt as if Tony had missed a trick in not including Malaga in the trip, as it was gorgeous, but the beach was far busier and you understood why he hadn’t. It wasn’t necessarily all that peaceful here.
From Malaga, came the flight to Ajaccio, Corsica, where you’d be spending two nights. You were already a little tired from the travelling, but didn’t let it bother you and this time you took the flight as a chance to sleep, your head lolling onto Steve’s shoulder within minutes of take off. 5 hours later and the man in the seat beside the two of you had to wake you up, as Steve’s head rested on top of yours as he slept too. He claimed it was because he couldn’t bear to stay awake and listen to your snoring. Cheeky bastard.
Tony had arranged a special trip for your day in Corsica, which turned out to only be a single day, since you arrived at 9pm and wanted to go straight to your hotel to sleep at that point. You’d be in Ajaccio tomorrow but leaving the next day. It was a quick turnaround.
You woke up at 9am in your hotel room and padded into the bathroom to get ready, lightly shaking Steve’s shoulder on your way past his bed in a bid to get him up. A cotton sundress and a pair of sensible flat sandals being the choice of the day, you emerged from the bathroom to find Steve sleepily wandering around the room, picking up his clothes. You exchanged smiles before he disappeared into the bathroom to get ready himself.
It was quite the walk to the tour bus, as Tony had booked you onto a coach trip that was supposed to be for people on an incredibly posh cruise, but when you asked how he’d did it he muttered something about contacts and you decided not to question him. The tour in question was one of the famous Prunelli Gorges, which Tony claimed had beautiful views and perfect photo opportunities. You had shrugged and agreed, ignoring the slight look of reproach on Pepper’s face as he booked it and the sharp words they’d exchanged afterwards. Couldn’t have been anything too worrying.
“Have you looked up what the Prunelli Gorges actually are?” Steve asked you as you walked through the streets, staring at the route on your phone as if your life depended on it. Every so often he would have to grab your elbow and manoeuvre you out of the way of oncoming passers-by, or even walls.
“No, I wanted it to be a surprise. You?”
“Same here. Do you think it’ll be like a smaller grand canyon?”
“I dunno. Maybe?” you admitted, because really, you hadn’t thought about it, but now that you were, you really didn’t know what you were in for today. It was only slightly concerning.
Steve’s phone pinged and he fished in the pocket of his shorts for it, pulling it out and seeing a text from Tony.
Tony: Make sure you hold her hand, big guy!
Following the text was a laughing emoji, an embarrassed emoji and then a few emojis that Steve wished he didn’t know the meaning of.
“Anyone important?” you asked, still looking down at the route and turning left at the end of a street. Steve was puzzled, but sure as hell wasn’t going to share the text with you and so he pocketed his phone and shrugged.
“Domino’s Pizza, two for one deal.”
“Ah damn! If only we were at home,” you joked, looking up at him with a teasing glint in your eye and he laughed, shaking his head. You definitely didn’t mean that and he damn well knew it.
Finally reaching the line of tour buses at the docks, you put your phone away in your bag and marvelled at the scenery. Looming in the not so far distance was an enormous cruise ship and there was a thick line of people streaming from it and into the tour bus area, being assigned to their various excursions. You and Steve were under strict instructions from Tony to mention his name and the codeword, wanderlust, to the security guard outside the area and he’d be sure to let you in.
I mean, if he didn’t, you were kind of stuck.
“Hello, sir,” Steve ventured, walking forwards towards the guard and you thanked your lucky stars that he was willing to do this, since you were terrified of being sent away and Tony not having worked his magic, “We’re here under the name Tony Stark?”
The man eyed him warily and you hurriedly took the last few steps so that you were shoulder to shoulder with Steve.
“Wanderlust!” you squeaked, and Steve looked at you in mild surprise, his lips pressed together to stop him from laughing at your timid tone. You scowled at him. But the guard nodded, far too seriously, and stood out of the way to let you in, pointing to a tour bus on the end of the row, number 66.
“66? You gotta be kiddin’ me,” Steve murmured to you and you chuckled and shushed him as you passed the guard with a half smile. As you walked to your tour bus, you glanced backwards and noticed that the man had a rifle slung over his back and your eyes widened of their own accord, and you shuffled closer to Steve subconsciously.
“Ah, you two must be the Stark party!” the woman beside the tour bus exclaimed cheerily in a heavy french accent that was almost dreamy. You both nodded cordially and she ticked off your names on her clipboard with a flourish, ushering you onto the bus, “Oh you are going to have a wonderful time, you’ll see, you’ll see!”
You both boarded the bus, and Steve looked back you with a raised eyebrow at the woman, but you just shook your head ever so slightly, as if to tell him not to question it. You found two seats free near the front and sat yourselves down, Steve by the window and you in the aisle, sending a few smiles in the direction of the various people around you.
“That woman scares me,” Steve whispered to you.
“You and me both,” you agreed, “But don’t worry, I won’t let the big bad woman hurt you.”
“You gonna protect me, doll?” he asked, smirking at you and you played along, placing a hand on his cheek and ignoring the effect that nickname had on you.
“Sugar, I wouldn’t let anyone hurt a hair on your pretty little head,” you assured him in your best southern accent, which just happened to be terrible. He placed his hand on top of your own.
“You make me feel so safe, Y/N.”
“Just doin’ my job,” you said, but suddenly your voice was deeper and more like a bodyguard’s, and Steve snorted, his hand slipping from yours and his forehead falling to your shoulder as you both laughed.
“Good morning cruisers!” a high pitched voice came through a microphone and ricocheted around the bus, “My name is Martina and I will be your guide for this incredible tour of the beautiful Prunelli Gorges! Let’s go, driver!”
Looking around, the seats were full and there were quite a few faces either amused or worried by the enthusiasm of the guide, Steve’s face definitely on the worried side. You tried to reassure him.
“It’s probably good to have an enthusiastic guide, Steve, at least she’ll get us all excited during the trip!”
He hummed, plainly unimpressed, in response as the coach roared to life and the driver expertly reversed out of the parking bay and onto the roads. Before long you were on what must have been a motorway here, even though it felt rather tiny. You pointed through the window towards the mountains that towered in the distance, ones that you seemed to be heading for.
“We better not be going there.”
“I don’t think we will be,” Steve laughed and you joined him. They were far too high up, after all, though you had heard of some mountain roads in Ajaccio. The thought made you shiver. No way.
“...and you’ll notice that tree on your left...oh, it’s gone. Well if you take the leaves from that and add the juice of the sap from that same trees you get a wonderful balm for skin irritation, bites and stings...”
Both you and Steve had long since blocked out the incessant voice of your guide, since apparently you’d been wrong and her enthusiasm did not enthuse the bus, instead alienating the majority of it. You tuned in just for that section about the tree though, and quickly tuned out again, even more confused by her than ever. Another half an hour later and you left the motorway, turning onto a winding road that seemed surprisingly steep.
Above you was the mountain that had been so far away. Now close. Very close.
“Steve?”
“Hm?”
“Are we going up this mountain?” you asked timidly, looking out of the window and noticing just how slanted the ground below the bus was. The roads were winding, the greenery slowly thinning out around you with every turn you took. When a car came towards you, both parties had to slow down and get the passing just right. You were beginning to feel sick.
Steve hadn’t answered you either, which didn’t make you feel any better.
Another turn later and the greenery had thinned out so much that you were able to see through it, only for a fleeting second, but you saw an expanse of trees that were considerably below you. And you were still climbing higher.
“Holy crap,” you murmured to yourself, looking ahead at the seat in front of you, feeling your heart rate pick up.
Then it hit you.
Prunelli Gorges. Gorges. You were going around the top of the gorges. Which would be below you. Far below you.
Suddenly, Pepper’s sharp words to Tony when he booked it made sense.
It was only minutes before you rounded another corner and then there were no more winding roads through the trees, feeling safe on either side. The trees fell away and there was rock on one side of the bus and a sheer cliff-face on the other. You glanced down and felt your head spin. 2500ft was your best guess for the height of the drop. Right next to you.
You heard Steve curse, and the bus slowed considerably as it took the corner and you were on the mountain road. There were murmurs throughout the bus as everyone saw what they were facing next and you saw one woman cross herself nearby, making you feel a million times worse. It felt like your stomach had already dropped the 2500ft. You cast your gaze down to the floor urgently.
“Now, don’t worry about this bit of the journey, everyone, this is the fun bit! And Luca has driven this stretch of road more times than he can count, right Luca?”
“Actually this is my first time,” he deadpanned and you snapped your head up to look at him. Martina was laughing at him as if he’d just said something funny. As far as you were concerned he was the least funny person you’d ever met in your life.
There was a turn coming up, one in which you couldn’t see where you were going anymore and it just looked like you were going to disappear into the mountain.
“You okay?” Steve asked you, peering at your face and you noticed he was an unearthly shade of white. It was likely he was looking at you to avoid looking over the side of the cliff above anything else.
“No,” you hissed, “How could Tony do this to us?”
And suddenly, Tony’s earlier text made sense. Asshole.
Steve didn’t answer and you came to the turn. You tensed every muscle in your body as you felt the vehicle shift and heard a screech from the back of the bus a few seconds later. Both you and Steve whipped round to check everything was okay and saw a woman breathing heavily with a hand on her chest.
“Our side was hanging over the edge!” she exclaimed to the man next to her, seemingly her son, who rubbed her back comfortingly. You let out a shaky breath.
“You can’t be nervous, Y/N,” Steve said and you could hear the tremble in his voice along with the attempt to lighten the mood, “You said you’d protect me, remember?”
“Only if you’ll protect me too, cowboy,” you said breathlessly and you could feel your heart pounding through your chest, closing your eyes with a wince when you felt the bus turning again. These winding mountain roads were so much worse than the previous winding roads. You wished you’d never complained about those.
“Always,” Steve said, somewhat sincerely.
The bus lurched as a wheel clipped the tiny kerb on the cliffside. Both of you jumped out of your skin and instantly you were gripping each other’s hands for dear life. You looked down at your joined hands once you were sure that the bus wasn’t falling to its doom, slightly embarrassed, but Steve squeezed your hand and gave you a tiny smile and you didn’t feel quite so embarrassed then.
Your hands stayed linked.
---
You stepped off the bus on shaky legs and Steve quickly offered you his arm to hold on to until you regained your balance, though your hand gripping his arm like a vice was grounding him somewhat also. That had been the worst hour of your life. A stark contrast to the joys of Gibraltar. You were extremely surprised neither of you had thrown up. Yet.
“I swear,” you said, swallowing thickly, “If we’re going back that way, I’m not getting back on that bus. I’ll get a taxi, I swear to everything I hold dear.”
“We won’t be going back that way, I’m sure of it,” Steve assured you, but he sounded hoarse and had to cough to regain his composure.
“You can be damn well sure of it, I won’t do it Steve!”
You’d held hands for basically the whole hour. They became incredibly clammy but neither of you really cared. Occasionally you grasp onto his forearm for some extra support and once or twice Steve made the mistake of looking to his left and seeing the drop right there and had to bury his face in your shoulder. Your other hand would come up and hold onto the back of his head at those moments and he’d take a second or two to calm before he was able to sit up again. Both of you used each other as comfort and comforted each other as best as you could. Ensuring the other was okay was the only thing that really prevented either of you from crying.
It sounded dramatic but it was terrifying. Every corner felt like a deathtrap and there was a collective gasp everytime a car came towards the bus.
Now you’d stopped at the highest of heights, where one of Martina’s friends had a caravan out of which she sold Corsican meats and cheeses. It was a strange place to stop but no one was going to argue with an idea that got them off the damn bus.
“Hey guys! Enjoying the tour?” Martina was suddenly in your line of vision and you jumped, still entirely on edge. Steve was quick to be there for you, a warm hand placed on the small of your back soothing you within seconds. You relaxed under his touch. Steve answered her for you but you didn’t hear what he was saying. Instead you focused on the way the skin of your back prickled into goosebumps despite there being cotton between your back and his hand and the way your heart had picked up again for a different reason altogether.
“Well, I have some lavender oil here, very good for calming the mind. I can put some on your wrists?”
You had the vague thought that she might be poisoning you but pushed it away and offered your wrists quickly, hoping that the oil might actually have the calming effect that she claimed. Steve did the same and the loss of his hand on your back almost made you think it wasn’t worth the oil. Almost.
Once Martina had left you alone to pester others to take some of her oil, you gestured to a table to Steve and he nodded, the two of you walking over and sitting down with loud sighs escaping you both. You took a moment to actually look around. You hadn’t been able to appreciate the scenery until now.
One view had you standing up from your chair before you’d even properly sat down in it. You walked over towards the edge of the lay-by, which, just for this rest stop had a higher wall. And down below you was the most beautiful landscape you’d ever seen in person. There were gorgeous green mountains, all sloping down into the clearest blue lake you could imagine, which curved around the land that surrounded it. It was like something out of a movie.
Steve had joined you, slightly panicked when you’d begun walking towards the edge with no explanation but understood completely by the time he was stood side by side with you. He looked out across the gorge and felt tears pricking the back of his eyes. He blinked them back.
He reached for your hand and this time, rather than just holding it, he slipped his fingers through yours and intertwined them. You looked up at him, almost as if in awe, but he kept his eyes trained on the view. You looked forwards again, heart rate slowing as you calmed, his touch seemingly having some sort of magical effect on you. After a few seconds, spurred on by his act of bravery and of intimacy, you shuffled closer until you were touching and pulled his arm around your shoulders, keeping your fingers locked together as you rested your head on his chest.
It was practically midday and the sun overhead glittered on the water. But nothing glittered as much as the happiness in both of your eyes.
---
It was yet another hour to the next rest stop, but this one was the journey down the mountain, slowly, which somehow was easier than the journey up. There were still a few hand holding moments but this time there was also some soft chatter between you as you eased and moments towards the end of the hour where you were actually able to look where you were going which seemed to be a little tiny village in the side of the mountain. You were nearly back at a normal level by now, but the village still appeared high up compared to everything else.
When you stopped this time, your legs weren’t shaky, which was an improvement and there was an actual shop that sold ice cream, which was a bonus. The meats and cheeses from before hadn’t really done it for you. You waited in the queue and got two whippy ice creams, wandering outside into the courtyard seating to eat them.
“I’m going to kill Tony,” you said through a mouthful of ice cream and Steve nodded, swallowing his own.
“I’ll help,” he agreed, “As long as we make it as painful as possible.”
You gasped excitedly.
“We can bring him up here and push him off one of the cliffs!”
Steve pointed his ice cream at you knowingly.
“Bingo!” he exclaimed, swiping your nose and leaving a little dot of ice cream there, before returning it to his mouth as if nothing had happened. You giggled, reaching over to swipe his own face but protesting when he moved his face out of the way.
“Hold...still…” you said, sticking your tongue out to concentrate as you leaned right over the table and tried to get his face, even though he was leaning away as far as he could and frantically turning his face from side to side every time you got close. Eventually, you took hold of his face with one hand and booped his nose with the whippy, grinning triumphantly at the mark left which dripped down onto his chin.
If anyone had looked over, it would definitely have seemed you were about to kiss him.
There was one fated moment where Steve thought you were going to as well.
And another fated moment where you thought you were going to.
So...
You did.
It was a fleeting kiss, but you were already cupping his face and you just leaned in and pressed your lips to his, quickly, sweetly, closing your eyes and savouring the sparks. When you pulled away and looked at him, flitting from his eyes to his lips and back again, you licked your lips.
He stood up and you were forced to pull away properly, falling back into your seat at the other side of the table with a thump. You watched him as he snatched the ice cream from your hand and walked away from you and your heart dropped.
His back was hunched as he walked away and you brought your hand up to your mouth as you processed exactly what you’d just done. You’d just ruined your friendship with Steve. You’d just ruined your friendship with Steve. You’d just ruined your friendship with Steve.
But then you watched through glassy eyes as he threw the ice creams in the bin and turned back to you, his gaze hard and unfaltering, his eyes utterly locked on you. You froze. Didn’t know whether to run or hide or beg him to forget what you’d just done, to rewind the clock, to go back in time.
He stalked over to you with a purpose you were almost sure you’d never seen from him and you stood up, opening your mouth to tell him how sorry you were when his arm was suddenly locked around your waist, tugging you against his chest, his other arm on the side of your neck as he tilted your face up to his and met you in a searing kiss.
Your back arched and he encouraged it, arm tightening around you as his lips moved against yours. You were still in shock, and all you could do was cling to his upper arms desperately as you kissed him back. He tasted like ice cream and home. That wasn’t a taste. It was likely you were delirious at this point.
He pulled away and you fisted your hand in his shirt collar as some sort of reflex to keep him close, to ensure he couldn’t get away.
“Wow,” he breathed after a few seconds of heavy breathing and you chuckled, nudging your nose against his playfully.
“Wow.”
“I didn’t mean to do that,” Steve whispered. His words hit you full force. A cold bucket of water poured over you, when you were previously warm and basking in a glow you’d never known. Your hands let go of him and you were a respectable distance away from him within an instant.
“You didn’t mean to do that?” you asked quietly, willing your legs to stop trembling right this second.
“No! No, that wasn’t what I was trying to say, I mean-”
“Because I think it was just the setting.”
You said the words without thinking. They just came out, even though you didn’t mean them at all. But your heart was shouting that danger was nearby and you were terrified of what he’d just said and the fear on his face. He didn’t want this. How could you ever kid yourself that he would want this?
Your words hit him like a van at full speed and knocked him clear off his feet. You didn’t want this. How could he ever kid himself that you would want this?
“The setting?” his voice was shaking because you were saying everything he’d dreaded you would say after a moment like this. You heard the shake and believed it to be fear of what might happen next, fear of you taking this the wrong way. Your own insecurities were both of your worst enemies. Always had been.
“Yeah. The setting. It’s so pretty. Easy to get caught up in the moment, make silly mistakes,” you said quickly, and now you couldn’t even look at him which naturally he took to be regret, “Right?”
You waited with bated breath. Wanted him to scream that you weren’t right, that you were wrong. That he wanted you. That he loved you. So that you could tell him you loved him and pull him right back to where you were just mere seconds ago, kissing with the passion of two star-crossed lovers.
“Right.”
But he didn’t.
Martina called everyone back onto the bus for the last leg of the tour, the last hour that took you all the way back to the bus bay where you’d started the day. Tension was thick in the bus. Somehow, even the terrifying cliffs were better than the icy silence that blanketed you and Steve, suffocated you slowly the entire way back. You sat rigid in your seats and when Steve’s knee knocked against yours at one point both of you pulled away as if you’d been scorched by the touch.
You walked back to your hotel in near silence, the only talking when you said “it’s a right here” or “straight on again”.
You went into the bathroom to change into your pyjamas. When you came out and Steve took your place, there were no smiles exchanged, instead eyes averted to the ground, shoulders careful not to brush each other.
Lying in bed that night, the twin beds had never seemed so far away. You both lay rigid on your backs, as if any movement might disturb the other and send them away. You were scared to breathe.
“Goodnight,” Steve whispered to you in the dark and the simple word was all it took. You turned on your side away from him and covered your mouth to hide the sobs, face crumpled up in pure sorrow.
“Night, Steve,” you managed to choke out as his tears made steady, silent tracks down his cheeks.
And so you lay, two almost-lovers in separate beds, mourning something you’d never even had to begin with.
Utterly heartbroken.
