The Battle of the Hornburg took place at the mountain fortress of the Hornburg in the valley of Helm's Deep in Rohan. The Hornburg was a great Gondorian fortress later used by the Rohirrim. It was said among the Rohirrim that no enemy had ever taken the Hornburg by assault and it was considered the strongest fortress in Rohan, stronger than Edoras and Dunharrow.
Saruman's forces used their blasting fire to gain entrance to the keep. At this moment, however, the horn of Helm's Deep was sounded, and after a moment a sortie led by Théoden and Aragorn rode forth, followed by men on foot from the keep, and the defenders of the caves, who made a break-out attempt and were driving the enemy out of the deep.
Both armies then noticed that many trees, Huorns, had moved to block a possible escape route for the Orcs. Then Gandalf, Erkenbrand, and a thousand men on foot from the Westfold arrived and charged. The Dunlendings were so terrified of Gandalf that they could no longer fight. The Orcs lost control and ran into the trees, where the Huorns destroyed them. Thus, Rohan won the battle.

some general observations as I put together notes for analyzing the Octo1 characters weaknesses from the extra battle update to Octo2. Some minor spoilers for late-game stuff.
weaknesses are definitely mechanics-driven, every character has 3 weaknesses, except Primrose and Ophilia, who each only have 2 weaknesses, which is interesting since they're each the main "support" character for their respective teams, so it's apparently harder to hit and take out the support (and from what I've heard so far about Ophilia's battle kit, she is the one you wanna take out first which is SO funny considering that like, story-wise Ophilia is just the sweetest, even if she doesn't take shit from anyone)
the rest of the travelers being balanced at 3 weaknesses each (and having access to the secret jobs), makes me think the extra battle takes place in Octo1's post-game as well, as they'd be more experienced (less weaknesses) and also work together more cohesively as a team (hence why this extra battle is so hard, ignoring the fact that it's a special post-game bonus superboss-esque fight)
like what we see with the Octo2 characters' weaknesses, every character who uses long-ranged weapons has a weakness to a short-ranged weapon and vice versa. Daggers seem to be treated exclusively as long-ranged weapons, which makes for an even balance of 3 long- (polearms, bows, daggers) and 3 short-ranged (staffs, axes, swords) weapons. The fire-ice, lightning-wind, and light-dark weakness patterns are also consistent.
there's some fancy balancing with the weapon weaknesses again, every weapon is strong against at least 2 characters, with the exception of polearms which are only strong against 1 character (Therion), and daggers which are strong against 3 characters (Ophilia, Cyrus, and Alfyn)
likewise we have some interesting numbers for elemental weaknesses, as each element is strong against at least two characters except lightning and light, which are only strong against one character each
I'm assuming the balance of weaknesses is for battle mechanics balancing purposes, since it fairly equally spreads out the potential weaknesses (and the player is expected to be using secondary jobs and secret jobs at this point, and should theoretically be able to hit any weakness), but it is interesting that polearms, lightning, and light are unpopular choices for weaknesses
for character specific observations:
Ophilia is weak to daggers (ranged counter against her melee staff), and dark (counter to her light), which makes sense overall (her main antagonist was working in the shadows along assassins, so the dagger specifically makes sense as a weakness). Nothing too surprising about her except her lack of weaknesses (despite her kindness, she is incredibly capable and aware).
Cyrus has no elemental weaknesses (makes sense given his general mastery of elements, even if he's not a magic scholar specifically), and instead is weak to swords, daggers, and axes. The daggers make sense as the ranged counter to his melee staff, but swords and axes fill out the rest of the melee-ranged weapons for his weaknesses which is very interesting (and entirely opposite from Osvald's "ranged-weapons only" weakness set). But if we consider the fact that all of Cyrus's story's major beats occur with people close to him betraying him in some way (Therese telling a lie about him, Yvon kidnapping him, etc.), it does make sense that he would have a weakness to weapons a person would need to get close to him to use.
Tressa is weak to staffs to counter her ranged polearm and bow, as well as fire and lightning. The lightning makes sense, given that Tressa's main element is wind, but the fire is interesting. Tressa does live in a coastal village, so this could be the idea of fire being the natural opposite to water, the same way we see how Ochette (who lives on an island) is weak to fire.
Olberic's a fun enigma, because he's weak to axes, ice, and wind. As a warrior (master of arms), I'd expect him to have nothing but elemental weaknesses, similar to Hikari, but we don't see that here. Axes counter Olberic's ranged polearm, and wind is Erhardt's main element in CotC (Olberc also notably has access to lightning skills in CotC to allow the player a way to break an elemental weakness w/ Olberic, and as a tie-in to the fact that Olberic is Brand god of battle thunder's chosen traveler), so the wind weakness makes sense, albeit in a somewhat tragic way. The ice weakness is surprising though, especially given that both the Highlands and Hornburg are mountainous regions (high elevations tend to be chillier), but if I had to hazard a guess I'd say it has something to do with Olberic's burning passion to protect others (ice being the counter to fire).
[It should be noted that, in-game Erhardt is weak to swords, axes, ice, and dark, so Olberic and Erhardt share the axe and ice weaknesses (Erhardt is the "Blazing Blade" so the ice weakness isn't as surprising); swords probably exist as a weakness for mechanical purposes to ensure the player can break him during the forced fight in Olberic's Ch3, although dark is surprising--perhaps it hints at Erhardt's eventual heel-face turn?]
Primrose is weak to swords (to counter her ranged dagger) and light (to counter her dark), which more or less checks out with her narratively as well. Her quest for revenge requires her to live and operate in the shadows, and shining light on it would only show the truth of the violence of her quest. I was under the impression that Simeon stabs Primrose with a dagger at the end of her Ch3, but for all I know it was a sword, and even if it wasn't, some daggers are long enough to be considered short swords.
Alfyn is weak to daggers and bows (ranged counters to his melee axe), and fire (counter to his ice). It was interesting that polearms weren't amongst his weaknesses, given the whole situation with Miguel, but if we assume the extra battles take place in a hypothetical "post-game", maybe Alfyn's lack of weaknesses to polearms is testament to his character growth over the course of his story.
Therion is weak to polearms and bows (ranged counters to his melee sword, although it is interesting to note that this may be the only case when dagger is treated as a potential close-ranged weapon). The fact that he has only weaknesses to ranged weapons is consistent with his characterization--Therion won't let anyone get close enough to hurt him (emotionally) again, so the only way to hurt him is from afar. He's also weak to ice as a counter to his fire affinity, although this makes the fact that his final chapter takes place in a cold and bitter place rather symbolic (he must go into his weakness--the cold, and also trusting Heathcote--to fulfill his quest).
H'aanit is weak to staffs (melee counter to her ranged bow), and more interestingly to wind and dark. Wind makes sense, given that H'aanit's main element is lightning, but the dark is surprising, since unlike Castti (who also had a weakness to dark because of story events), we don't see H'aanit struggle against anything "dark" except Redeye, who she's entirely triumphant against. However it's interesting to note that in CotC, Z'aanta has access to light attacks, and given that he raised H'aanit, it's possible she has an affinity to light despite not having access to it as an elemental attack. Additionally, H'aanit works alongside Eliza closely during the events of her story, and Eliza also has access to light as her main element in CotC, making most of the characters H'aanit works closely with light-aligned.
[In addition to Z'aanta and Eliza, Alaic has a weakness to dark as well, either in connection to his backstory and/or because he too has an affinity for light--potentially. I don't have a good guide to all NPC's weaknesses for either of the games, so I can't go and double-check all of H'aanit's NPC weaknesses, but it is interesting that at least 3 of the major NPCs in her story either share her weakness to dark or are definitely linked with light.]
Again, no specific direction or point I'm trying to make with these notes, just jotting them down for the sake of thinking about game mechanics and characterization ties.
#octopath traveler#I want to put together another large post with diagrams for the weaknesses and stuff but hmm that will take time#also I need to go rewatch/reread the banters bc it's been a hot minute since I played the first game#H'aanit specifically was fun to think about here though bc when I first saw her dark weakness I was like ??#as if Z'aanta wasn't on my main team for CotC#Hornburg didn't train their knights to watch out for axes and ice apparently#not quite as many ''ah-ha!'' moments bc the weaknesses really seem to be set up to balancing the battle but still super interesting#oracle of lore

"My heart has and always will be yours" - Haldir x Fem Reader
Y/n saves Haldir amid the Battle of Helm's Deep.
This is mostly angst, but there's a little fluff too!
Word Count: 1,754
My requests are always open, so feel free to message me if you have an idea! I'll write for any character from The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Rings of Power!
This is a request for @arrowlina! I hope you like what I have written!
The moon and scattered torches were the only light that shone upon the legions of men from Rohan who courageously stood their ground at The Hornburg, located at the mouth of the gorge known as Helm’s Deep. Though they fought with their all, the masses of Uruk Hai marched towards them with only the goal of taking the position, their only fear was being defeated.
Knowing just how important this location was, Galadriel and Celeborn sent reinforcements from their lands to stop Saruman’s forces from taking control. The elves who marched to provide help knew just how dangerous their participation would be; however, the fight was understood to be more important than any of them.
Y/n bowed her head at the men she had passed, noticing the hope that had returned to their eyes as she and Haldir led the other elves from Lothlorien into the fortress. Their presence was reassuring, yet Y/n knew it was going to take much more than just them being there to secure a victory.
Haldir hardly paid any mind to the men who surrounded him. Y/n watched as his eyes remained forward, most likely running through any last-minute strategies that had hit him. He did not appear to be nervous; quite frankly, there was a content expression that laced his features.
After they met up with the other leaders, it was time for them to take their positions, for there were only mere moments until the battle would commence.
“Haldir,” Y/n started turning to the blonde elf beside her, “You must know that whatever happens during this battle, my heart has and always will be yours.”
He raised his hand slowly, caressing her face before speaking, “As is mine, I look forward to rejoicing with you when the fight is over my love.”
The pair broke up at the sound of arrows whistling through the dense night air, immediately jumping into action. Each of their actions was calculated as they shouted orders at the elven troops, maintaining a fighting style that would ensure their supplies could last for the entirety of the battle.
They were aware that a massive number of orcs would march upon Helm’s Deep, however, the sheer magnitude of their attempt to break down the walls was frightening. Images of defeat flashed through Y/n’s mind, and although she tried to push those thoughts away, fear was rising within her. But she had no time to delve into it.
When the elves' support proved useless in guarding the wall, Y/n sprinted out behind Aragorn and the others, ditching her bow for a sword, and cutting orcs down as they attempted to attack her. They came at her from every direction, causing her to duck and dodge blows aimed at her. She had no time to think about anything other than the fight at hand, for she knew even the smallest of distractions could cause her untimely death.
Though Haldir had his troubles to focus on, he maintained a close eye on his elven bride, ensuring he could get to her if need be. Not that he doubted her abilities to defend herself against the Uruk Hai, but he was aware that one could easily get overwhelmed in times like this.
Fatigue had begun to fall over the soldiers, their bodies completely and utterly drained by the immense number of orcs, and Haldir was no exception. An orc that appeared to be larger than the rest approached him, and even though Haldir tried his absolute best to attack him, he found himself relying more on defense. He held up his blade, trying to shove the orc’s weapon away from him, but despite his best efforts the orc swiftly knocked it onto the ground, leaving Haldir defenseless.
His eyes slightly widened, but he refused to let the Uruk Hai see his fear. The orc lunged forward, puncturing the elf in his abdomen, and though he was in complete and utter pain, he only let a small grunt escape his lips.
As the orc reveled in the elf’s defeat, he failed to notice Y/n who was charging at him, and in one swift movement, she jumped and lodged her sword through its heart. With anger flowing through her veins, she twisted the blade further in, staring into its eyes as she watched any sign of life drain.
Turning her attention back to Haldir, she ran over to him, and somehow, the adrenaline coursing through her body allowed her to pick him up and carry him over to an area hidden away from the rest of the battle. His head was resting in her lap as her palm pressed firmly on the wound, preventing any blood from escaping.
“I-I’m scared,” he whispered, letting a tear spill from his dark blue eyes.
“There is no need to fear anything, my love, I’m here with you now, and I won’t let anything happen to you,” Y/n spoke, masking her fear with a façade of confident reassurance.
“We can’t stay here,” Haldir noted, gesturing to where the clanking of swords and crashing of armor could be heard.
“You’re right, I need to get you out of here,” Y/n replied, thinking for a moment before her ears perked at the sound of hooves pounding against the earth.
“They’ve arrived!” a voice sounded in the distance.
“The Riders of Rohan are here!” another yelled.
“I need a horse,” she muttered to herself realizing that she would have to leave Haldir alone for a moment, even in his terrible condition.
“Haldir, I must leave you here briefly, but I promise I’ll be back. I need to get a horse so I can take you somewhere safe. There’s no way we could make it anywhere on foot,” she told him, taking the pad of her thumb and wiping away his tears.
He nodded at her with a small smile, “Be safe,” were the only words he said before she jumped up and ran back into battle, with her sword in front of her.
Y/n scanned the area, her eyes locking onto a horse not too far away, its rider slain by the treacherous creatures. Sprinting to it, she grabbed onto its reins and started to lead it to the corner where Haldir was situated.
Seething in pain, she watched as an arrow grazed her bicep, though she couldn’t focus on the pain, for there was a greater task that needed to be completed. Disregarding everything around her Y/n kept pushing along, each step forward feeling like an eternity.
“Darling I’m back,” Y/n stated before looking down at Haldir whose eyes were shut, sweat beading on his face.
Immediately running towards him, she placed her fingers against his throat, checking for a pulse, and she let out a sigh of relief when his heart was still pumping blood throughout his body.
Snaking her arms underneath his, she dragged him to the horse but struggled to pull him onto the saddle. Beginning to panic, she tried to think of another way to help him up, but she was stumped.
“Let me help,” a voice sounded, and Y/n turned her head, watching as Aragorn sprinted over.
He told her to get onto the horse first, and she did without hesitation. While he pushed Haldir up onto the horse, Y/n helped to lift him; both working together to get him situated in front of her. Y/n wrapped her arms around Haldir’s waist, grabbing the reins as his head dropped forward, maintaining his unconsciousness.
“Thank you, Aragorn, I will surely find a way to repay you for your kindness,” Y/n stated, bowing her head at the man before flicking the reins with her wrists and quickly maneuvering through the crowds of orcs, elves, and men.
The sun had begun to rise in the east, the light cutting through the haze of fog that had fallen over the lands. Y/n was thankful for the horse she had borrowed, noting that it was faster than she imagined it to be, making their return to camp quicker than expected.
When she saw the healing tent in the middle of the camp, she immediately stopped the horse, gesturing for people to come and help her bring him inside. Though they were whisking him away almost quicker than she could move, Y/n refused to leave his side, desperately needing to be there with him.
Watching as they removed his armor, she noticed just how bad the wound was, she had to turn around, for it was too painful to watch. She sat in a chair nearby, watching as the healers swiftly moved around providing the help he desperately needed.
Sitting there, Y/n felt exhaustion begin to take hold of her body, and she fought her heavy eyelids from closing, though eventually she succumbed to their weight.
“Y/n,” a quiet yet hoarse said, yet Y/n didn’t wake up, she only shifted slightly in the uncomfortable chair.
“Y/n,” the voice spoke again, this time louder, making the female elves quickly open, confusion lacing her features, forgetting where she had fallen asleep.
When her eyes fell upon Haldir’s form that was lying in bed, she jumped up when she noticed that his blue eyes were open and alert.
“My love, you’re okay!” she exclaimed, kneeling on the ground next to his bed, before grabbing his hand and gently kissing it.
“All thanks to you,” Haldir said, a smile pulling at the corners of his mouth, making Y/n’s heart practically melt within her chest.
“I was only doing what you would’ve done for me,” Y/n started, tears pricking at the corners of her eyes, “For a while there, I thought I was going to lose you.”
Haldir looked at Y/n, his throat tightening as he realized how much pain he must’ve caused her in those terrifying moments. He couldn’t possibly imagine what that would’ve felt like.
“My dear, I’m sorry for the pain I must’ve caused you, but you must know that you cannot get rid of me that easily. I’m stubborn in that regard,” he replied, cupping her cheek with his hand, ignoring the soreness that had overtaken his body.
“Do not apologize, it was not your fault Haldir,” she responded, wiping away the sadness from her eyes.
“Ah yes, I should’ve remembered your stubbornness,” Y/n continued, letting a small laugh escape her lips.
“Please, for your own sake, do your best not to forget it,” Haldir smirked, pushing himself up in bed, just enough for Y/n to gently wrap her arms around him, and give him a tender hug.

It’s time! I have unblocked the tags, seen the movie, and have thoughts about War of the Rohirrim!
There are some extremely generalized thoughts here, and then more specific and detailed thoughts are below the cut to shield them from those who want to avoid all discussion of plot. Also, I have literally *just* seen it, and it’s a lot to take in what with visuals, story, music, etc. So I reserve my right to change my mind later!
I liked it! I thought it was fun and engaging, and getting to revisit treasured sentimental things like the visuals of Meduseld or the Rohan theme from the original LOTR score are just like cheat codes to my heart.
It has canon deviations. In some cases, I can see why they wanted to make changes for purposes of effective movie storytelling (changing the location of certain events, for example). In others, I think it was probably just a desire to throw in something that folks will recognize from the movies/books even though the story didn’t need it. It doesn’t upset me, but your personal mileage might vary.
There’s been a lot of attention paid to Héra as the main character, but there are other cool women characters that have been added as well. That being said, I think the movie is still a little confused/confusing in what it thinks about the role of women in Rohirrim society and leadership. And, you know, Tolkien was confusing about it, too, which is why we are still having the “what really is a shield maiden?” discussion in 2024. But it’s notable to me nonetheless.
I went to an AMC but, alas, they did not have the war hammer popcorn buckets. ☹️
More specific opinions, kind of firehose style:
I liked Héra a lot and the old lady from the Hornburg, but I really liked Olwyn! I wish they would have made her Helm’s wife/Héra’s mom so that we could have avoided the Dead Mom trope. That would have also explained how/why Olwyn was wielding such significant authority/command over the defense of Edoras and the Hornburg even though she was positioned solely as someone in service to Héra.
They went WAY easy on Helm in the opening sequence with Freca. I can understand why — they don’t want to make Helm unlikeable right from the jump — but Helm of the books was more of an instigator of that mess than Freca (Helm swung first!!!) and he was a much bigger dick about it. I think it would have been interesting to see the other iteration, which would have been a more complex, nuanced take on Helm and given him even more chance for emotional growth.
That being said, I really liked how they handled the whole “Helm wanders off into the snow each night and scares the shit out of Wulf’s army” stuff. I thought it was really cool and very effective. Two thumbs up.
I was very appreciative that they made the Dunlending general who was aiding Wulf (Tragg? I think? Nope, Targg!) a real person — smart, strategic, not bloodthirsty, with real humanity — rather than the one dimensional “savage wild man” stereotype that has so often been the Dunlendings’ narrative fate.
OKAY Fréaláf!!! Loved that guy. Handsome, noble, loyal, progressive, showing up on the ridge with the ringing of horns just in time to turn the tide of a battle. Legend.
Miranda Otto says in the opening narration that you won’t hear about Héra in the histories and legends from that time (which you’ve gotta say, right, since she’s an invented character that is literally not in any of the histories and legends!). But I wish they had followed up on that directly at the end with a more concrete explanation for WHY she’s not remembered. Fréaláf loved her and respected her! He wouldn’t have erased her from the story even if she had ridden off to some uncertain adventure with Gandalf and never returned again! So I was left a little bit wondering still, “what happened???”
EDITING TO ADD: I cannot believe I forgot to say how glad I was that the movie seemed not to care about Héra’s romantic life at all. She says very clearly that she’s not interested in getting married, and of course Wulf doesn’t like that. But we don’t spend time delving into what she actually means or why she feels that way and we don’t have her reach some weird heteronormative realization along the way that she DOES want a man even if it’s not Wulf. It’s just stated and then we move on. Maybe she’s a lesbian, maybe she’s aro/ace, maybe she just has other priorities and concerns right now. Whatever her deal is, the movie is content to let it be without drama or judgment. And I liked that.
Stopping there because this could get quite long and I’m still thinking things over, but that’s my start!

And so at length Éomer and Aragorn met in the midst of the battle, and they leaned on their swords and looked on one another and were glad. ‘Thus we meet again, though all the hosts of Mordor lay between us,’ said Aragorn. ‘Did I not say so at the Hornburg?’ ‘So you spoke,’ said Éomer, ‘but hope oft deceives, and I knew not then that you were a man foresighted. Yet twice blessed is help unlooked for, and never was a meeting of friends more joyful.’ And they clasped hand in hand.

I love the octodeck SO SO MUCH, would you be willing to share your design choices?? Like I would've expected the noble/rogue classes to be the basis for separation by suit, on top of the black/red divide between octo 1 and 2 characters
sure! i’ll actually go card by card and explain all my choices tbh, so strap in for a long post
first up, spades! my girlfriend was the one who suggested the games be the split between red and black suits, so starting from there we hashed out out placements for suits. honestly, we didn’t choose for much reason other than vibes, so the design choices weren’t much about classes/gameplay. spades is the higher ranked suit, as well as having a symbol with a sharper motif. for this, it felt like olberic and primrose were good fits, with olberic being the oldest/most battle hardened of the OT1 cast, and primrose having a sort of rightful queen motif (and she’s dangerous with a dagger.) with ophilia and tressa being chosen for jack, we decided to put tressa as spades (this one is very slightly gameplay related, she is kind of the best so we gave her the higher suit) and therion got the ace. i explain a lot about the card placements here, so following this paragraph i’m not gonna rehash it too much.
anyways, now here’s some of the design thoughts about these guys!
Tressa: for these earlier spades cards, which were the first suit i sketched, they definitely started with the lightest backround elements. i went in on a second pass and added some more detail, but tressa was the first card i drew and she had no backround at all at first. decided that a pirate ship/sea and treasure were good motifs for her
Primrose: i absolutely loved drawing her card, but then again i love drawing primrose in general. for primrose, i decided her backround elements would be birds and petals. birds are a prevalent symbol in her story, with the crows being her enemies, and primrose herself is a kind of caged bird. initially, i wanted to give her an asymmetrical card that had one half with 3 black birds (crows) while the other half had white birds (freedom). i didn’t end up liking any of the sketches for the black birds, so i decided to just do the white birds instead. still really love this card!
Olberic: olberic was a tough one to pick a backround for. i ended up going for just some vaguely mountainous shapes, but also decided to add in the gate of finis, since it’s located in hornburg. my goal with this card was to make him look regal without looking royal. i think the sword also came out really good, i really like the way the mirroring on this card came out
Therion: Therion was the first ace i drew, and i decided that since ace cards aren’t face cards, i have free rein to do whatever i wanted. and what i wanted was to not have to worry about the mirroring. so all of the aces ended up with this kind of “guy floating in space” idea, which i think is pretty fun without being overly complex. i didn’t want to over complicate the ace cards, since typically they’re pretty minimal looking. my original idea was to have each of our aces holding or interacting with their suit symbol in some way to make it interesting. the spade kind of looks like a dagger, if you stretch it out, so my original idea was to have him wield it as such. however, none of my sketches read clearly, so instead opted to have them instead present their suit as a kind of compromise. since ace cards are not face cards i also opted not to define their faces.
here’s the clubs! when i was getting to the coloring stage, what i decided to do to make things interesting visually was to use a different palette for each suit, while still keeping it clearly black suit/red suit. for the black suits, Spades got the cool grey palette, and clubs got the warm gray pallete!
as for individual notes…
Ophilia: oh boy she gave me a lot of trouble. this was mostly due to the lighting on her lantern, and trying to convey it in grayscale. i think i did a pretty decent job!
H’aanit: decided linde counted as a backround element for the hunters. i don’t have too much to say about this card other than it took me a while to grayscale it so that everything was silhouetted to an acceptable degree to me lol
Cyrus: i had a lot of trouble picking out a backround for him. i thought maybe a library or something similar, but i ended up going with this pretty generic sunny pathway to represent the bright lands in general. the big chunky brush makes rendering small details in the backround difficult (not impossible) so simpler is better if i can swing it.
Alfyn: going back to the interacting-with-suit-symbol idea, my original idea was that the clubs symbol kind of looks like a clover, so alfyn could be kind of inspecting it like an herb or something. however, the pose i first drew was too similar to cyrus, and again the symbol did not read clearly, so i scrapped it lol.
one fun thing about the way we ended up sorting the suits was that each set had 2 pairs that had team up attacks in the ot2 extra battles (olberic/tressa, therion/prim for spades, alfyn/ophilia and cyrus/h’aanit for clubs.) this was by complete accident.
now we reach the red suits! for hearts, i opted to use warm/orangey shades. onto the individual notes!
Agnea: i wanted her braid to be nice and visible in the composition, so i kept her backround elements light. just fluttering petals to fill some space i just love drawing agnea in general tbh
Partitio: i got a good way through coloring this one and decided i absolutely needed to make his coat yellow. it’s too iconic to the design. luckily, the warm red pallete accommodates it pretty well. it’s definitely a more orangey shade but with all the red it reads quite yellow. i gray/redscaled everyone specifically to avoid having to figure out color palettes for everyone that were cohesive and read well, while also making clear distinctions between suits, but partitio had to be a little bit of the exception. i did decide on warm red for hearts for him specifically perhaps….
Ochette: this was the first card i actually executed an asymmetrical design on! one side has akala in the background, the other side has mahina. they’re both right side up, but they can’t coexist. thought it was fun! this is also one of my favorite cards now that it’s finished. i did NOT like it at the lineart stage, but loved it after the color!
Osvald: osvald as the ace of hearts has been a fav placement according to my sources (tumblr tags, comments, etc) my original idea was to have him more ready to start blasting one true magic love super mega laser with the heart at the center of that, but i think having him hold/present it a little more gently is also fitting. maybe like it’s more fragile, even tho being the ace makes him the strongest card of his suit (love can make you blast lasers)
diamonds! these guys got the cooler red/pink palette.
Throné: i’m sure the snake motif needs no explanation, but the idea here was that she was entangled by the snake, like it’s holding her down.
Castti: castti also got a unique color added to her card, though it’s much less noticeable than partitio. the raindrops in her card are purple! (uh. should i exclamation point that? three cheers for horrifying evil super mega toxic rain?) i added clouds to go with the rain, but also a vine that deteriorates or recovers as it goes, whatever way you want to look at it.
Hikari: another asymmetrical card. one side hikari, one side his shadow self. i also offset the mirroring on this card a lot more, and allowed the drawings to extend down into each other more than than the other cards in this way, hikari and his shadow self intersect, but aren’t quite mirror images as much as the other cards. (does that make sense?) as for his backround, i put the castle town of ku. this one was difficult to get to read right, but i think i got it pretty decent.
Temenos: my original idea for this one would be that temenos is interacting with the diamond like the mirror shard, but again, i scrapped that idea. instead, he presents it like the other aces. not too much to say here
jokers! i got a couple suggestions for what to do for jokers, (kit, al, lyblac, oboro, arcanette) but definitely most common was people saying to incorporate caits/octopuffs in some way. i liked this one the best because jokers are wild cards, and they’re also kind of silly, so making them villains or major story characters didn’t quite feel right. with these cards, i decided that i could use any colors i had previously used to color them, so they get to be both gray and red tones. due to the variety of warm and cool tones, i actually had a ton of color to work with, and they almost even look like didn’t i gave myself color limitations on them!
for the cait card, i stared with a more accurate orange cait, but decided that i’d rather make it gray since the octopuffs were gonna be orange (or pink). besides, the cultured cait is gray so it’s fine. as for the octopuffs, i ended up just picking two that i liked and using those. i tried adding more smaller ones as backround elements, but didn’t end up liking how it looked.
and then finally, the backing! there’s a couple things going on here, and this was definitely super fun to draw because doing something more ornamental like this is outside of my usual wheelhouse. i started with the concept of the circle with the 8 base class symbols, in OCTOPATH order of the first game. in the middle is 4 flames, like the 4 that protect solista in OT2. on either side i drew octopuses, because. octo. i ended up giving them the little horns too, making them massive octopuffs. then, to round it out, i added little chubby caits to the corners, and then a smattering of stars to fill out the space, since i liked the way it looked. surrounding the flame, the stars indicate night, a sort of subtle nod to the nightfall endgame in OT2, while the stars being out imply that at least for now, it’s a normal night. the chubby caits have some teeny tiny jewels and treasure surround them, and the sparkles ended up looking like more stars, so i just added more. as the the border, it’s basically just random ornamentation lol.
and that’s it! (for interesting cards, at least. doubt anyone cares about the unchanged number cards) hope you liked the long read, i just like talking about drawing lol

The Ring has gone beyond their reach now, with but one casualty from their Company to its name so far; but that does not mean its dark whispers do not linger still within the hearts that heard it.

Even on the sweet walks of the Shire, things come along that sweep you off your feet—adventures, wizards, children. Bilbo came down, a month after he’d adopted this strange, quiet boy on a whim and a wonder, and found his whole (second) living room scattered with some unholy combination of paint, jam, and mud. Frodo sat in the middle of the mess, with dirty hands and innocence plastered all over his face.
Bilbo leaned on the door because something in that bright grin had taken his balance from him. He went for a mop. He had not felt so at home since thirteen dwarves had tumbled through his round green door. He felt like Frodo had stolen something from him and then given it back better than it had left.
Thievery, perhaps, ran in the family.

Out of curiosity, why didn't the Battle of Helm's Deep/the Hornburg and the Battle of Pelennor Fields get, well, Battles printed in any of the Lord of the Rings products?
The Black Gate got a random Gate, so it just seems like a missed opportunity.
The Lord of the Rings was actually designed before March of the Machine as Universes Beyond products have numerous review cycles with the licensor and thus have a longer design schedule. So why didn't it have Battles? Battles didn't exist yet.

So, I guess I'm supposed to be normal about Ceorl?
Ceorl who rode all alone from the fords of the Isen, to go and fetch Éomer urgently?
He didn't know that Éomer had been in prison.
He didn't know that Théoden had arisen.
He fought for weeks at the Isen, enduring the attacks and the dreadful losses there. Then he was there again, when Isengard emptied and pushed them across the river. Their camp was attacked again overnight, and the shield wall was broken, and they were overmastered.
And after that, after a sleepless night of battle, with a dinted helm and a cloven shield, he rode all day, so fast that when they found him, he could only slowly climb down his horse 'and stood there a while gasping'. Gasping!
And he has no hope then, he said that the riders coming from Edoras were too few, too late, and that they should go back to Edoras before the wolves of Isengard find them.
And when he sees Théoden, his face lights up 'with joy and wonder', and he draws himself up.
'Then he knelt, offering his notched sword to the king.' Sorry, him offering his notched sword is where I break.
And then Théoden orders that he receives a fresh horse, TO RIDE INTO BATTLE AGAIN.
My poor man has dented, broken arms, he barely caught his breath, he's horribly tired and sleep-deprived, and he has to turn around to head for what turns out to be the battle of the Hornburg!
I apologize, but I don't believe I will shut up about Ceorl any time soon.
#Ceorl#Rohan#Blohirrim#lotr#Do I reallly need to wait until chapter 11 to introduce him?#We have no indication that he fell either at Hornburg or on the Pelennor#Therefore I HC that he survived#And I have many many good things planned for him#Because it's CEORL ❤️#And he deserves it#Also poor horse!

Thoughts on WOTR Part 1/?
I had the joy of watching this in the cinemas with my friend and both of us deeply deeply enjoyed it.
TLDR: Good solid movie with compelling characters and story. Excellent homage to Tolkein. It's not pretending to be anything but an addition to the current Legendarium, an insight to a period of history which has very little actually written about (canonically at least).
Apologies for horrible grammar and spelling in advance. The following's just my thoughts on Helm, Hera, Wulf and Targg.
Spoilers for The War of the Rohirrim. It's a long one.
Helm Hammerhand
Really liked how they depicted his hot-headedness and his love for his children. I jsut adore parent and children bonds, and the weight of his love was so very clear. The whole thing was so very tragic, seeing two of your children killed and the third probably awaiting a worse fate? Tragic, absolutely tragic but so fun to watch. His temper is something that sort of parallels Wulf I think. There's a line there somewhere but I can't really voice it yet, maybe it just needs a little more time to stew.
It was a little unexpected for him to exile Wulf; it felt strange as while it was a rash decision, and while that fits his character, it didn't really make sense? From the brief sense of the culture of Rohan, it seemed family and strong relationships were extremely valued which made him purposefully exiling Wulf strange as a) it basically is an invitation to hate Helm with reason and b) he’s aged and, set up to be, wise in terms of battle and strategy which means surely, surely he would have realised the moment he said it that this would come to bite him back? This points a bit of a nitpick, but I can't help wonder if they went the way of self-exile for Wulf, what that would have changed in terms of storytelling.
Another thing that sorta applies to other characters too is how they depicted the time passing. Originally when the narrator says ‘seasons past yet no sign of Wulf appeared’ thing, Helm looked exactly the same as he did in the beginning which was his hair. If they made him grey-haired, then it would be easier to show the time passing eg, give white streaks throughout hair; in addition to this, you could have had his entire hair white in Hornburg to emphasise the extent of his grief. Might even help play with the whole wraith arc.
Speaking of which, the wraith-arc was excellent, I loved how they incorporated that view from ordinary people into it, it really sold the power and influence Helm had on his people and his enemies. The thing I really didn't like/felt negatively about but understood was how he immediately became this tough, muscled fit person especially so soon after being depicted as a gaunt, skeleton, shell of a man due to his grief. It doesn't make sense narratively too as it disrupts the whole thing about being trapped and supplies dwindling low in Hornburg. Unless he stole from Wulf’s army but still, the timeline is a little confusing and his sudden supernatural strength (despite being human) to go toe to toe with a troll broke the immersion a little.
I'm just a sucker for those story-telling narrations okay? Those implications of this becoming a legend, a myth retold again and again, there's just something about a legacy well left behind that tickles my fancy.
Hera
Loved her whole character arc except, EXCEPT, her fucking hair. I don’t mind her clothes, though her rider outfit, the one that strongly reminds me of Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff, was a little too modern aesthetic.
Starting off good/strong, I love the fact they didn’t change her thoughts on marriage. I was apprehensive for a long time throughout the movie because that’s usually how it goes, that there should be an arc, a start and an end which differs from that start belief but thank all that it didn’t go that through. She feels very ace-coded to me, the whole I'm married to nothing but death? Gorgeous. I might be a little biased here tho.
I adore how they show her intelligence and strength. The way they subtly used her skill/knowledge with horses to set up Hama’s finale was gold. I would have loved to see more of her with her horse, and the bond they had, like short stories where she travels throughout the land before nad after the events of the movie. Just the whole movie had excellent writing and storytelling. The way they had side characters like Lief and Olwyn, build each other up is such a simple but effective way. It felt very grounded, that they had a lot of history and respect for each other. It didn't feel like any side characters were missing potential/felt out of place.
Her intelligence was not in your face, not arrogant and forced and random long tirades which I adored. As much as I loved BBC Sherlock, the way they depicted his intelligence was iffy and I’m glad they didn't go that route for Hera. I don't think I have any specific scenes in mind, just overall excellent storytelling with her. Minus that one scene where she was captured by General Targg and grunts, lass you had a sword in your belt and you’re beating your hands against the man’s back? I guess shock and adrenaline and all but it felt really weird and slightly out of character. (Unless I’m remembering wrong, I hope that’s the reason)
Now, I know this is done by a Japanese company and thus has strong ties to anime (and thus main character hair syndrome), but really? Really? I can’t get over her hair. Why would you make it red? Sure you can argue her mothers could be red-haired and that her brothers had a different mother, but what does that do but detract from the storytelling? Moments such as her brother's deaths could have been made more moving (not that it wasn't, I teared up during Hama’s scene so much, just the way the music is so mournful and muted compared to previous loud battle scenes and thundering hooves, the bond he has with his old mare, ah that scene was a masterpiece). It not only visually ties her to her family more strongly, but it signals visually the transfer of the line of kings to Frealaf. I just think it was such a missed opportunity.
Actually, now that I thinking more, I really adore how she knows Wulf so well. Especially in that last battle, the way she purposefully pushes all his buttons, and fighting in a wedding dress? Any other movie I would be thinking distasteful thoughts but here? Beautiful shock but understandable. She’s been shown to fight before, she has access to armour (ill-fitting though they may be) but instead of acting sensible like Wulf probably expects, she trades defensive for psychological warfare and hell yeah, it rocks. The whole wedding dress was pointless and taunting and by Gods it was lovely.
A tiny nitpick but understandable why the producers did this; I like it when shows/movies show grime and tears on clothing to show the journey they went through but I understand animations long and time-consuming and really keeping track of all the rips and tears would be a such a pain.
Wulf
I love his design okay? He’s the typical bad/angsty lad and it's a stereotype that works for a reason. His character stays amazingly consistent, he’s so fixated on Hera and his vengeance and the lengths he goes for it, terrifying in the best way possible. While the inciting incident was his father's death, I think it came through quite strongly that that wasn’t the true reason why he continued on his attack. Someone else probably has already made a detailed explanation and breakdown so I‘ll leave this part be.
Other than that I don't have much strong feeling on him? Its a little strange, I appreciate him as a character but it doesn't really invoke in me anything strong. Good character set up with their childhood flashback where he gets the scar due to his loss of temper, good consistent decision made with reckless abandon.
General Targg
Okay, not gonna lie, this is my favourite character, besides Olwyn and Hera. Like dude’s doing his best and making so very sensible suggestions and he keeps getting ignored. He keeps getting ignored. He’s a strong, experienced veteran who served under Wulf’s father, probably knows Wulf since a young age and he’s doing his damn best to keep Wulf alive and satisfied (I would say happy but I think that’s not quite possible) despite the hilariously stupid decisions Wulf keeps making. I use the word hilarious because it is. Especially from Targg’s POV. This leads to the thing I’m most confused about; why did Targg stay? What is his motive here? In the end he’s killed by Wulf himself, despite him being a reasonable commander who had supported Wulf all this time. While it enforces Wulf’s character, it feels really strange to never see why Targg stays on the same side especially when Wulf makes a whole bunch of strategic blunders. It might be loyalty to father, loyalty to son thing but I dunno, I wish they had a scene or dialogue that just gives us a bit more info. Like, looking back the only reason Wulf is not as banged up as he should be with that personality and temper of his, is that Targg there’s to soothe things over and manage strategic decisions. I’m not saying Wulf’s stupid, he’s is smart and clever but you cannot convince me that Wulf would not antagonise (purposefully or accidentally) would be allies and Targg would have to play diplomat.
Honestly I think he and Olwyn would be those type who would meet in a bar/tavern and trade good stories with good (or shitty) drinks between them, and probably also complain about idiots who get themselves into trouble all the time. They're like the duo who could and absolutely would look at each other in a situation over their fighting charges, have their eyes meet and say get a load of this bullshit. Honestly, Targg didn’t get what he deserved, man really got betrayed while doing nothing but what he did for the entire movie, AKA making reasonable suggestions.
Side notes, I really liked the depiction of horses in Rohan. Like the bond all Rohans had for horses. There were so many scenes where I was thinking, and getting annoyed, go on kill that horse and kill its rider, like the easiest way to kill a man, get their horse to kill them for you. But then I was like, but this is Rohan. Their crazy about horses (or at least what I know, the little I do of Rohan) so it absolutely would make sense for them to not treat their horses as meat shields. Their whole country/state is (probably) based on horses and travelling place to place so while it would make economic and practical sense to keep as many horses alive as possible, I think its just neat if it’s their culture that influences this decision.
