Happy Memorial Day, Turkmenistan. On this date in 1881, the Siege of Geok Tepe was broken by Russian commander Mikhail Skobelev, following which the town was slaughtered and the Russians took control of Turkmenistan all the way up until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.

The ruins of the fort of Geok Tepe, late 1800s. The Battle of Geok Tepe in 1881 allowed the Russian empire to take full control of modern-day Turkmenistan. The Russians assaulted the fort, constructed largely of mud, with artillery and explosives, killing tens of thousands of Turkmen soldiers. The Russians moved on to conquer much of the rest of central Asia.
