Don't forget all the racism in Warcraft's writing which has actually gotten worse over the years whilst even DnD has gotten better over the years.

I mean, it’s hard for me to say Blizzard’s racist writing got worse when Warcraft Trolls were incredibly transparent stand-ins for African and Central American cultures/races from the beginning. That’s not even getting into goblins as the banking/neutral race before a goblin faction joined the Horde. Honestly, other people have written about racism in the narrative of WoW lore at length, and I wouldn’t be able to do half as good a job since I haven’t played in a while.

A key problem with Blizzard’s writing in WoW is that there is no coherent story. It’s an amalgamation of plots conceived by writers without any accountability, which results in an absurd number of retcons and contradictions. It’s a collaborative story with no central lore document. Nothing is actually set in stone. Sometimes the change is genuinely an improvement over prior lore (shadow priests, old gods, and the Void Lords, as they were elaborated upon in Legion), sometimes it’s painfully anticlimactic and nonsensical (Tyrande fails to kill Sylvanas in the Ardenweald because her powers suddenly cut out), and sometimes it’s obvious a team got written into a corner by a different team and the plot just needs to move on (no negative repercussions for Illidan killing Xe’ra in front of her Army of the Light on their flagship). That means that some quest lines are really well done, others are plagued with racism and bullshit, and every possible mix in between.

Like, how Sylvanas was handled throughout the Shadowlands expansion is peak WoW writing. Obvious plot armor, flimsy justifications for her choices because half the writers didn’t want her to be a villain, a half-assed cardboard cutout of a redemption arc so they could fridge her for later, and the cheesiest vague dialogue possible so that future retcons wouldn’t feel as disappointing. I was so excited for her to go genocidal in Battle for Azeroth, committing to a truly evil option that the players band together to stop, and then it was followed by that. Because Blizzard decided to walk back the “genocide is bad” message. For reasons.

I haven’t played WoW since the end of Shadowlands, so I can’t speak as to the changes since then. I doubt they’re better. And I want to be clear: I adored Xal’atath. I mained a shadow priest the entire time I played, which was about 8 years total. The lore of my preferred class was all about self-worship and tapping into dark power in one’s own soul until it was retconned into worshiping Eldritch horrors, and I loved both iterations. I had several now-unobtainable PVP titles. I did BGs and Arenas. I did progression raiding. I had max level toons in every class on multiple servers. My main was in the top 10 for achievement points on our server. I had over 400 days played. I was the lore nerd of my raiding guild. I did that silly trivia bot game every time I came across it in the hub city. I collected mounts, pets (before they were even battle pets) , and toys (when they still took up bag space). I spent a lot of time playing WoW and immersing in the experience.

I never played WoW for the story. The writing was always horribly inconsistent. Writers’ racial and class biases always worked their way into random quests, dialogue, and narrative beats. But you know what? I’m a POC, and that’s everywhere. WoW wasn’t unique for that.

WoW has been around for about 20 years at this point, Warcraft for even longer—so now those stances engrained in the lore aren’t as widely accepted anymore. They were always wrong. It’s just that now more people agree that it’s wrong. I’m no longer on the fringes for thinking “man, it would be nice to have a human character with my skin color” or “it would be nice to see elements of my culture shown through something other than a cannibalistic troll empire.”

D&D benefits from the fact that they release new editions, so the lore from prior editions is easier to sweep under the rug. There is no WoW 2. It’s just WoW. If D&D had taken a similar expansion process as WoW instead of editions, they’d be much more comparable. D&D racism isn’t really “better”—I just haven’t spent quite the same number of hours spent learning it to play a game.

i know the big bang theory isn't made for geeks and most of the scientific information presented in the show is incorrect but the big one that really prodded my gallbladder until bile ejected itself forcefully and violently from the nostrils is the episode where they're playing world of warcraft. as a wow player of 16 years, here's everything wrong below the readmore. idc if this gets notes im autistic and needed to vomit this out of my brain.

howard (i think) is lured by a troll woman under a bridge and gets mugged for all his gold. due to the language barriers in-game, this would be inter-faction PvP which can only happen by accepting a duel. also, players cannot be looted when they die. you can't even die in a duel. this shakily implies that he traded her all his gold, then followed her to a bridge and got ganked. if that is the case, he would be an alliance player with pvp flagging on. also, alliance can't trade with or speak with horde. (unless he was playing a demon hunter, in which case the troll would also have to be a demon hunter, and trolls cannot be demon hunters.)

raj says he's talking to an orc under a bridge in thunder bluff. the bridges in thunder bluff do not have ground beneath them. if you're "under a bridge in thunder bluff", you're about 50 feet beneath thunder bluff, in mulgore.

sheldon mourns the loss of his "battle ostrich" named "glen", implying that his level 85 blood elf was a hunter, and had a pet ostrich. these don't exist in the game. pets cannot be stolen, either.

howard says he found a tavern where black market weapon trades happen. the black market is a real thing, but it's never in any taverns. also, weapons that can be traded can just be put on the auction house. meeting someone in a tavern to give them the gold for a weapon is just way more difficult for everyone involved for no reason?

raj says other players are undressing his (female) character with their eyes, and howard tells him to stop dropping her sword and bending over to pick it up. if you "drop" (i.e., trail the weapon off your character screen and into the world) your weapon, you'd be asked if you're sure you want to delete it, and then it gets deleted. /bend isn't even an emote. raj also says he'll have sex with the goblin that raided sheldon's account. this is also something you cannot do. again, goblins are a horde race, and it seems they play horde. a goblin can't kill you if you're both players in the horde.

the main four arrive at "the gates of elzebub". not a place.

leonard tells everyone not to panic as this is what the last 97 hours of gameplay have been about. it takes 10 minutes maximum to travel anywhere in the game. unless he's referring to raid prep time. if this is the case, they would be wiped instantly. 4 players isn't enough for one dungeon, let alone a raid. also, you'd need to be really sucky at farming for potions, gems, vantus runes etc., if it takes you four days to prep. i raided with a high tier mythic guild EU and i prepped for like half an hour every raid night?

howard says a horde of goblins are guarding the sword of azeroth. weapon doesn't exist. virtually all goblins in the game are neutral and only attack you if you attack them. (venture co. and horde guards upon aggroing to an alliance player being notable exceptions.)

howard tells raj to "blow up the gates". nowhere in the game requires you to blow up gates to gain access, except uldum. raj then presses CTRL + Shift + B to cast whatever his gate blowing up spell (doesn't exist) is. not saying you can't do this, but STRL + Shift + B is such an awkward and clunky keybind. you'd use Q, E, R, F, V, Z, X and sometimes S before using B.

they're pulling off a highly challenging and intense raid with four players on laptops without mice. no.

raj begins spamming a cast key at a speed MUCH quicker than the cooldown for ANY spell in this game.

leonard says "my tail is prehensile, i'll swat him off". there are only four races in the game with tails: draenei, tauren, lightforged draenei, highmountain tauren, dracthyr, and vulpera. none of them have prehensile tails. in fact, nothing in this game has a prehensile tail that i can think of. there's like one hozen in pandaria that swings from a tree.

"tonight i spice my meat with goblin blood" you don't need to eat in wow for any reason other than gaining a stat buff, or to regain health. also, goblin blood isn't a reagent for cooking.

Sheldon gets the sword of azeroth, which isn't a thing. Also, Leonard tells him to use a "sleath spell". (reading from a transcript here.) i have no idea what this is. he also describes himself as a "rogue night elf". aside from putting the class before the race which is icky, rogues can't cast spells. also, above, sheldon was a night elf, not a blood elf. he also had a pet, making him a hunter, not a rogue. if he was a night elf, he wouldn't be able to play with the others as they seem to have horde characters.

15. sheldon couldn't just take the sword. the game would ask everyone to roll need before greed. or else it would be personal loot, where there is a small chance of the sword dropping for any player. he then sells the sword on ebay, which wouldn't be possible, as the only people he could trade a soulbound item to would be the others in his party at the time, within a 2 hour window. to be fair, howard buys it immediately so like, whatever. but it's still weird that he put it on ebay.

Fish Fridays feature: The lost Irontide and the Naga of Cataclysm: The Azsh'ir

The Irontide naga, one of whom was the Irontide Engineer, were to be part of World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, but were removed from the game after beta.

Speculation: Given the name Irontide, and the fact that one of the Irontide was an engineer, one would assume that this faction of naga would have been mechanically inclined, and able to perform feats of engineering. If that were the case the naga would have likely gained a greater foothold on the surface lands of Azeroth; one can only imagine the destruction that would follow were the naga inclined to create mechanical weapons and other items or buildings.

While it is true that the naga were overseeing operations involving complex mechanics in Outland, (for example Coilfang Reservoir), the plans for them were conceived by gnomes and built by slave labor (the Broken Draenei). It might be argued, however, that the naga were perfectly well able to build mechanics but were likely for the most part uninterested in using anything other than magic and brute force to accomplish their aims.

They have seized hold of the ruins of Vash'ir, appearing in the Quel'Dormir gardens, the Nar'shola terrace, and the Biel'Aran Ridge,all of which form a large part of the once-great city ruled by Lestharia Vashj.

Some of the Azsh'ir naga are simple warriors and patrollers, creatures to be slain in quests such as The Looming Threat, and Caught off Guard.

Some of the other naga, however, such as the Raiders, appear in an entertaining quest called "Visions of Vashj'ir Past" in which the player assumes the role of a Naz'jar Battlemaiden in past battles (more on that in another Fish Fridays post). Fun Facts and Speculation:

Some of the Azsh'ir idols of Queen Azshara, ( "Azsh'ir Idols"), are worshipped by the Bloodwash Naga (in a quest in the Blasted Lands, a murloc spirit gives you the task of destroying their idols, stating that "Neptulon is still their god" and not Azshara). This quest offers an insight into the chaotic relationship between Azsharas' forces and the Tide Lord Neptulon.

The Azsh'ir Wave Screamers use an ability called "Hymn of Lady Sira'kess". Lady Sira'kess, a key figure in the Naz'jar battlemaidens' visions, was once thought to be Lady Sira'len, a night elf priestess who was close to Lestharia Vashj, transformed into a Naga. There appears to be no lore supporting this theory now, however. Lady Sira'kess also appears as a card in the Hearthstone Card Game.

I should write my OC+Submas fics ideas but they're all so niche and convoluted.

Like, my new Dracthyr OC, Kashir, from Warcraft gets eebi deebied to the Pokemon world after being attacked by an Ultra Beast and falling through an Ultra Wormhole.

In trying to find a way back to Azeroth he finds himself drawn to Ingo, who has lingering time energy after his time in Hisui, and thinks he is the key to getting home. But the Ultra Beast also wants to return home and keeps showing up to attack Kashir. There's some initial miscommunication where the Ultra Beast attacks are attributed to Kashir and he is hunted by trainers who assume he's some rare new legendary and want to capture him.

He doesn't end up going home but he does end up saving Emmet and befriending the Subway boys. Elesa teaches him how to use make-up to hide the barely visible scales on his Human visage form.

There's also my failed hero AU with Rei-as-shiny-Giratina. In his timeline there was no Ingo in Hisui. So he was the first skyfaller to appear and was treated with even more mistrust. Lady Sneaseler had no warden, so when she got frenzied there was no way to cure her and Rei ended up killing her while he was frantically trying to survive. Although Irida understood he had no choice, the Pearl Clan was furious at the loss of their noble and relations with the clans became extremely strained (even the Diamond Clan horrified).

When the sky turned red and Rei was banished, neither the Pearl Clan nor Diamond Clan leaders came to help (Adaman didn't want to risk the Galaxy Team + Pearl Clan allying). Volo still showed up to help Rei, but without any of the Clan leaders to keep an eye on Kamado, Rei and Volo showed up too late to prevent half the security corps from dying against frenzied Dialga.

Unable to create the Red Chain, time and space break down even further. Rei ends up bitter and angry at the lack of help and direction, so when Volo shows up with his plan to gather the plates and confront Arceus, Rei decides to team up with him. In preparing for the fight, Rei befriends Giratina.

The fight with Arceus goes very poorly and Rei dies, his soul gets shredded to pieces, and Giratina tries to save him by bringing him to the Distortion World and patching up his soul with it's own essence. Rei becomes a human/Giratina hybrid and his Giratina form is shiny. He can't back to his original timeline but the Distortion World connects to multiple realities so he goes to another.

He ends up immortal and wandering the world. He accumulates a team of ghost types (who are drawn to him) and his favorite past time becomes challenging the Unova Battle Subway. He ends up befriending the Subway Bosses (who just know him as an odd, but excellent, battler). Then one day Ingo disappears and Rei makes the decision to help Emmet find his brother, no matter what. Even if it leads to him having to return to Hisui and help a different skyfaller be the hero he failed to be.
