Well...I’ve been awful at keeping up with the blog since I returned from Christmas vacation :) Being back with family for Christmas was wonderful, by the way. We had just under 5 days with both families and did what is becoming our normal commute down and back from CT to VA. With both families, we enjoyed wonderful meals, hot desserts, lots of family time, and good weather (a proper freezing cold winter in CT and warm sunshine in VA). We returned to the UK on New Year’s Eve after a redeye flight. After a 4 hour nap, we were back into action and attended a few New Year’s parties, first celebrating with a traditional dutch dinner made by our dutch friends, and then celebrating with our British friends (although we did enjoy a new grape-eating tradition (http://www.foodrepublic.com/2012/12/28/12-grapes-at-midnight-spains-great-new-years-eve-tradition-and-superstition/) to honor the one Spanish person who was there as well.
New Year activities
The New Year has been off to a very positive start so far, hence, I suppose, why my blog has been suffering. I realize that fewer friends and activities in Austria meant more time for blogging..I suppose I prefer it the new way. We have a new small group that meets weekly, as well as a follow-up course to one of the first church courses (Alpha) that we joined when we arrived to the UK. Our church has moved from the town’s old “Electric theatre” to the newly-renovated Yvonne Arnaud theatre. It’s Charlottesville’s Paramount theatre, essentially - big stage, beautiful seats, 2 floors, really nice reception area. We’re excited about the move. Also, it’s pretty much just down the road from the old theatre, so our bike ride is essentially unchanged. Today, we thought we’d go to the morning service, but it was pouring rain when we woke up, so we decided to go to the evening....but then we were invited over to our friend’s for English brunch, and cycled in the rain anyhow. Twas worth it. We’ll be going to our local greek whole in the wall “Meat the Greek” to grab kebabs with our dutch friend, Bernadette, before we all head over to the evening service. It’s her first time going to church with us (perhaps really ever) so we’re excited for her to be joining.
Women’s Peace Conference
Yesterday, I attended an annual Women’s Peace Conference put on by the same Ahmadiyya muslim community who organized the interfaith event Sam and I attended in October. There were probably around 750 people in attendance, including several female members of parliament, mayors, and female UN leaders. Guests were probably 75% muslim, with the rest being either “distinguished guest speakers” or guests invited by members of the muslim community. The event was held in the biggest mosque in Western Europe, about 45 minutes northeast of Guildford. Refreshments were followed by a tour of the mosque, a series of speakers, a Q&A, and a large curry feast. The whole event was organized and attended by women only, which enabled any women wearing headscarves to remove their covers for the entirety of the event (apart from prayers), as desired. It was a lovely evening, though the most valuable part was likely the drive up and back, during which I had some very interesting conversations on faith and theology with the muslim woman who invited and drove me there.
Snow!
In other news, Guildford had its first snow this past week! It was incredibly exciting when it started, particularly for the locals, who have not seen a snow in this area for several years. I was at work when it first started and by the time I left for my bike ride home, the snow had turned to some combination of giant wet flakes and what felt like small pellets of ice pelting my face and coating my legs with wet, thick, freezing cold blankets. Traffic was chaos - my colleague’s 30 minute commute was 2 hours, traffic circles were backed up miles.... When it was all said and done, perhaps 2cm of icy snow covered the ground, though it was gone by the next evening. The British down here do not do snow well. Neither do I, when I’m cycling and unprepared.
Life
As mentioned, work has begun!! I started on the 4th of January and was pleased to discover that another guy my age started in the same position and team on that same day. It’s great having another person going through the same slow introduction and training days. Every time someone uses a sentence with 15 acronyms, I can confirm with a quick glance in his direction that I shouldn’t understand any of this stuff yet. The first 8 days have been a combination of health and safety assessments, paperwork, learning new software programs, and entering dozens of training dates in various “diaries” (agendas/calendars).
The other colleagues have been incredibly helpful and welcoming and the job in general seems demanding, but always changing and interesting. The first 6 or so months will be filled with training courses around southern England as I work on completing a mandatory national vocational qualification (NVQ) in probation work. In between training days, I’ll be shadowing rehabilitation and probation officers as they meet with offenders post-custody. I’ve already been giving a caseload of 4 offenders (or “Service Users”, as we call them) to co-work with my Resettlement team colleagues, with the goal of taking them over entirely in 4-8 weeks.
One of the greatest things about the job is that I am not able to work from home for security reasons. I have one corporate email and another secure government email. All doors in the building require key access, including the bathroom - that was annoying before I got my own key 3 days in. There are no work laptops or work phones, and no external portals to the secure servers...thus, working from home is impossible. Also, if I work significant over hours, I can take Time off in Leave. This is all quite the change from my last job, where everyone worked over, then worked from home, then never got any kind of compensation for any of it. Of course, I also start with 27 vacation days + holidays. This is all to say, while the pay is fairly miserable, the work life balance and benefits will be good. For that, and the lovely people with whom I’ll be working, I am thankful.
Sam, meanwhile, has taken on around 4 guitar students every Saturday at the local music store. They pay at the end of the lesson in cash, which has been a good way of budgeting for the week’s groceries. His PhD studies continue to go well and easily occupy him for the majority of every day, either at the university or at home. He’s still enjoying it, so it seems we’re both in good places in our working and social life right now :)
Alright. I’ll try to get back into the more regular, shorter updates. Thanks for following along.

Renovating Bathroom Wall Tiles in Guildford
A family living in Guildford were in touch recently about restoring the appearance of their Ceramic tiled shower and bathroom. They were about to put the property up for sale and were concerned the grubby grout might put off potential buyers. First impressions do count so renovating a bathroom or kitchen before selling is a really good idea and will help you achieve a better price. In this case the Ceramic tiles were dirty and black with mould in places which looked unhygienic and Read more at https://shower.tilecleaning.co.uk/renovating-bathroom-wall-tiles-in-guildford/

Photos Of The Week!
TorontoRealtyBlog
What’s the difference between “Photos of the Week,” and my more-regular, “MLS Musings” blog posts?
Well as you probably assume, the “MLS Musings” contain photos, those bizarre and unforgettable, from active MLS listings in Toronto.
The “Photos of the Week” are from houses and condos I visit in person, whereby I often find a lot crazier features.
Let’s have a look at the ones I’ve collected over the past couple of weeks…
–
Let’s start with a doozie, folks!
Here’s an absolutely gorgeous renovation – one that’s tough to really find a problem with…
…except that the bathroom sink is in the bedroom!
Yes, really.
I showed this to a couple of people who were like, “What? What am I looking at?” It’s like those 3-D puzzles that were big in the early-90’s; sometimes you just need to stare at it until it jumps out at you. The room looks so clean and polished until you realize it’s a fantastic mess of a renovation.
Not to be outdone, the bathroom itself had this odd hole in the floor:
And no, that wasn’t for a heating duct the way we see the vents on the floor in condo townhouses, as opposed to up on the ceiling.
That looked to me like a hole exactly the same size as the toilet drain, which was exactly across from the actual drain.
Is it possible they just cut a hole on the wrong side?
It reminds me of the time my mom shortened my Levi’s Jeans by two inches, both on the same leg…
–
For those of you that work in the construction field, maybe this next one isn’t that odd.
But it wasn’t just the knife on the floor of this 96%-finished condo, but rather the tape around the handle mimicking a classic jail-shank!
It reminds me of OZ. I miss that show…
–
Let’s continue the theme of poor workmanship.
I always tell my buyers, “If you’re looking at a ‘newly-renovated’ house, don’t look at the big things, look at the small things. Like where two pieces of trim join, or where the baseboard meets the flooring.”
If this is how the flippers of this house show what can be seen, imagine what they’ve done behind the scenes…
–
Such a simple task!
Take the bright-green painter’s tape off the ceiling fixture before you put the property on the market, or, for the love of God, do it on the first day of the listing, the second day, the third day…
–
Who was it that said, “Duct tape fixes anything“?
Was it from The Simpsons? Or Seinfeld? Or Home Improvement?
Well, the owners of this house figured that if one tube didn’t quite reach the other tube (it was off by two inches), they’d simply wrap duct-tape around the end of the first tube, and voila!
–
I laughed when I saw this.
Maybe heating and cooling isn’t my chosen field.
But I do know that if you’ve got electric baseboards wedged behind a gas radiator, then either one of them isn’t working (which is bad), or both of them are working (which is highly questionable):
–
I’m also not an electrician by trade.
But I do believe that the electrical panel is a little too close to the sink:
–
I’m also not a stager. And as was perhaps noted by the readers of Wednesday’s blog, a professional photographer…
….but I know what I like, right? This pretty set of wine glasses and flowers on the bed? Even though it’s completely impractical to have wine glasses on a bed in real life? Sort of how “practical” photos don’t really beat out “marketing” photos? No? Let that dead horse remain dead?
Okay. But what’s that I see in the wine glasses?
Oh, okay.
It’s just jagged pieces of broken glass…
….like I said, I’m not a stager.
–
Here we see another lovely set of wine glasses, but this time there’s actually, you know – wine!
What type of wine, I wonder?
….this type:
Yes, you’re seeing that correctly.
It’s not wine, but rather sparking juice!
But not just sparking – it’s ORGANIC!
–
From now on, every time you see a bed in a house that looks staged, pick up the sheets and look at what’s underneath:
That’s bad, but this is far worse:
youtube
–
And last, but certainly not least, let me end on a positive.
I love the character that exists in some of Toronto’s Victorian-era homes.
Maybe I’m obsessed with history, and “how people did things” in just about every fashion before our time.
But I love looking at load-bearing walls that held up Victorian homes, when they’re made out of stones! Not poured concrete, not cinder-blocks, not hundred-year-old brick, but actual stones that you’d basically find out in the woods.
In this Junction-area home, they kept they restored the original foundation, and used it as a feature-wall in the basement rec-room.
It’s absolutely gorgeous!
