Check-Mate! How To Bring On-Trend Stripes + Checks Into Your Home

Neutral spaces are calming and can help us recharge when we’re feeling depleted. However, pared back spaces usually need a little lift, otherwise they can feel flat and dull. Adding pattern is the perfect way to energise a space.

Enter stripes and checks! These unflappable, geometric staples are a safe way to add a bold, striking element without tipping the balance out. If florals, animal print or organic patterns are stretching your aesthetic just slightly too far, then checks and stripes are the perfect alternative. Having said that, a graphic expression suits an exuberant maximalist interior just as well as a minimalist space!

Here’s a few tips for incorporating them into your space:

Placement

If pattern isn’t usually your jam, think again about including a striped or check rug into the space. The geometric nature of these patterns can instantly pull a space together. It and create visual interest to a room without being overpowering.

If you want the to make a statement but don’t want to be too dramatic about it, then a throw a few gorgeous striped cushions on your sofa – the impact is real!

Think outside the living room and add some fabulous checks to the bedroom. A check quilt cover is a fabulous way to dive in and enjoy this trend. Adding some check towels to the bathroom feels like you’ve given it a makeover.

Contrasting

Keep in mind some contrasting scale, otherwise the patterns will complete with each other. For example, if there is a narrow stripe patterned quilt cover, then choose a fat bold check. That way there is contrast between the patterns and they sit well together.

Colours

The key to mixing in a stripe or check is to stick with a limited colour palette. Mixing stripes and check patterns adds life and a joyful tone to a room however when all of the patterns are different colours, it can look chaotic.

For a calm room, stick to stripes and checks in muted colours like nude, ochre and moss green that have less contrast. If you’re looking to create an exciting, joyful space then look to how the Memphis designers used bold colours such as yellow, lilac and cobalt blue.

Keep It In Check

Unless you’re going for a maximalist vibe, be careful of overdoing one pattern. If you’re considering a checked rug, then steer clear of also using checks in your soft furnishings, or furniture. And too many stripes – such as striped wallpaper combined with striped curtains – can create a dizzying effect in a room. So – focus on one or two key pieces which add impact, and leave it at that!

Shortlisted in the Textile category of TDF Design Awards 2020, emerging textile designer Annie Coop makes gorgeous, colourful prints inspired by Spain. She translates her stripy designs to wallpaper if soft furnishings don’t quite fit!

3. Kelly Wearstler

American interior design wonder Kelly Wearstler has recently debuted a range of bold, striped timber furniture. Go big with a dramatic dining table, or bold but understated with a stool or bench.

The La Banda furniture collection from Byron Bay-based designer Sarah Ellison sees a screen, console and side table made from ash and walnut timber wrapped in stripes of earthy tones.

This plush, squishy armchair from British makers Buchanan Studio is covered with striped Belgian linen screen-printed in London. Definition statement piece!

It wouldn’t be a round-up about stripes and checks if it didn’t include Baina! The cult New Zealand bath and beach towel burst onto the scene early last year with its finger firmly on the pulse of this oncoming trend. Choose from a range of patterns in bright or muted colours.

9. Lucy Tolan

Newly graduated student ceramicist Lucy Tolan makes ceramic vessels from porcelain paper clay and handpaints them with chunky checks. She even breaks her glazed forms in to pieces and glues them back together with the seams between each shard forming a fine textured grid. Her bold colours make these pieces a statement choice!

10. Curio Practice

Curio blankets are bringing checks back, big time! Their super soft blankets are manufactured in one of the last remaining local knitting factories in Melbourne. Each colourful design is made with 1.9 kilograms of high-grade Australian merino wool.

11. SoftEdge

Quite possibly the breakout ceramicist of 2020, Layla Cluer (aka Softedge Studio) handprints her wavy, checked platters, bowls and plates from her studio in Byron.

Optimise your space with these small bathroom ideas

If you have a small bathroom don’t worry, we’ve got plenty of small bathroom ideas for you. Make space beneath the eaves

Compact fittings are a big help in awkward-shaped loft spaces. Don’t worry about trying to fit a bath – go for a luxurious glass shower enclosure instead. It’s common with loft conversions and attics to box in parts of the room that have a reduced ceiling height for storage. But instead, why not look at ways to work around the reduced heights? Invest in made-to-measure fittings and fixtures

A well-thought-out design can fit all the essentials into as little as two square metres for a bathroom and even less for a shower room. The key is not to squeeze too much in. If you only have a small space, it’s much better to make a focal point of a walk-in shower or a beautiful bath, rather than ending up with a cramped bathroom.

Add a hint of colour to a white suite

While a white bathroom suite is the best choice for opening up a small space, it can sometimes feel a little stark if the whole room is white. That’s why a hint of colour on the walls is the perfect compromise: light enough to create an airy feel, but with bags more character. Here, the storage alcoves were built from tongue-and-groove panelling, then painted in white to contrast with the raspberry walls and striking cobalt-blue tiles.

Opt for a corner shower enclosure

If there’s no space for a bath, a shower enclosure will work perfectly. Corner designs take up very little room – the door on this shower slides around the frame, so it doesn’t need any more space than what you can see. Square versions can be designed in a similar way – just avoid swinging or pivot doors, which will need extra room.

Narrow Lot Modern Farmhouse

We often see TV shows transforming homes that are falling apart into dream homes, but that’s not so hard to do when you have a big team working against the time to show the beautiful results. Don’t get me wrong, I am a HUGE fan of some of these shows and some of them can certainly be trend setters, but today I want to showcase a builder and designer that could envision a new modern farmhouse on a really narrow lot in a real fixer-upper neighborhood. That’s the type of work I can really admire. Keep reading to know more:

“Hi everyone! My name is Amanda of @Nest_Builders_. I’m so excited to contribute to Home Bunch! My company Nest Builders Development & Design Co. builds and renovates homes in Richmond, Va.

With each home I build I try to incorporate current trends and timeless style while staying some what true to the style of other homes in the neighborhood. I call this project “The Urban Farmhouse.” This new construction home is located in the city along side Italianate homes. This home is only 15 ft. wide so keeping the floor plan open and the design as as light and bright as possible was very important. We kept the exterior style of the home similar to the other homes on this block but we added the board and batten siding, white exterior paint, and black windows to give it an updated and on trend look. We made the front porch low to the ground to also give the home some southern charm. The roof is a flat TPO roof similar to the other homes on this block.”

We kept the floors light. We used white oak with a clear finish throughout the home.

Kitchen

It was very important to me that we kept this house affordable but I wanted it to feel luxurious. I used a granite that mimics marble to get that same look and upgraded the lights and cabinet pulls. The polished nickel coloring of the lights balance the black of the pulls to make the kitchen feel fresh but warm and inviting.

It’s a small space so you can uses really expensive materials without breaking the bank. We upgraded the tile to cement and used a fun vanity to give it more of a custom look.

Again trying to blend trendy and modern with timeless and elegant, I opted for a white vanity and did a herringbone pattern with the black floor tile. I used a polished nickel mirror with rounded edges to soften to the space and incorporate some modern touches.

Designed by Maureen Ursino of Ursino Interiors (recently featured here), this project was a full gut renovation of a 1960’s ranch in Holmdel, NJ. The project was split into two phases, the first was a complete redesign and reconfiguration to create a functional, open, and airy home. The house was taken down to the studs and the only thing that remained in its original place were the bedrooms. The second phase is currently underway to furnish the home. Phase 2 is expected to be completed this spring.

Home Renovation

Kitchen Before:

The kitchen felt very closed-in and completely separated from the rest of the house.

I am sure this kitchen had many sweet memories.

Kitchen After:

Rearranging mostly of the main floor, allowed the designer to add an open-concept kitchen with crisp white cabinets and a large kitchen island.

Kitchen Cabinet: Solid maple inset Cabinetry.

Countertop is Quartz, Calacatta.

Lighting: Rejuvenation – Matte Black.

Kitchen Faucet: Signature Hardware, Polished Nickel.

Backsplash

Backsplash Ceramic White Subway Tile, 3 x 12.

Kitchen Pot Filler: Signature Hardware.

Kitchen Pulls: Rejuvenation “Mission” pull, polished nickel. Knobs: Rejuvenation “Sommerville” knob, polished nickel.

Paint Color

Walls and trim are Benjamin Moore OC-65 Chantilly Lace – this is a white paint color that I often recommend.

I’ll be honest with you guys, you won’t hear me say anything bad about older homes because I’m sure this place was once very loved and I feel I need to respect that.

Furnishings: The designer is currently working on the furnishing phase of the project and expect to be finished this spring.

Paint Color

Grid Board and Batten Fireplace Paint Color: Benjamin Moore Balboa Mist.

Stone is Natural Slate.

Master Bathroom

The master bathroom was also a gut-renovation and now features a more practical layout.

Vanity is custom-made and countertop is Quartz, Calacatta.

Flooring: Cement Tile Shop “Bouquet II”.

Faucet: Kohler Purist Collection, Polished Chrome.

Towel Ring: Kohler.

Hardware: Baldwin Ring Pull, Polished Chrome.

By changing the layout of the house, the new homeowner can enjoy of a large and very bright mudroom with a huge custom bench! What a dream!

Basic Bathroom Gets a Graphic, Modern Renovation

When I think back to how many places I’ve called home throughout my life, I realize just how many boring, basic bathrooms I’ve lived with—and the answer is “too many.” I mean, they’re fine in that they were functional, but for a design-obsessed person like myself, they were enough to make me cringe on a regular basis.

When we chose to partner with TOTO earlier this year, we decided that the gorgeous TOTO fixtures were way too amazing to live in my basic bathroom (see before photos at the end!). That led to the decision to try to elevate the rest of the space to do those fixtures some justice. As we mentioned before, we brought in designer Joyce Elizabeth Tranchida, of online interior design platform Decorilla, who graciously helped me hone in on what I liked and wanted after I obsessively pinned for a few weeks. After some back and forth with Joyce, here’s the mood board I finally decided on:

Decorilla magically turned the mood board into 3D renderings that looked so incredibly real that I wanted to fast forward to the finished product. However, unlike on television, renovations take time—which I quickly learned!

As you’ve probably heard from anyone who’s ever done any kind of renovation, issues come up that delay the project and that’s what happened here, but more on that later! It’s time for the final reveal because it’s finally DONE!

Once the TOTO products were selected, the rest of the design all started with that incredible tile from TileBar that I completely fell in love with. For the floor, we went with elongated hex tiles in a matte black and for the shower and main wall, the hex penny tiles in matte white with black grout. I can be slightly afraid of color, especially for something that’s permanent, so black and white was the perfect way to start the space. I highly suggest hiring a professional tile person and not just any contractor, especially if you’re planning to do any kind of small tile like penny or mosaic. Penny tile is much harder to install and can easily be done incorrectly… and unfortunately that’s exactly what happened the first go-round. After learning my lesson, I brought in an expert to finish the job and it was definitely the right decision!

To finish off the shower, we worked with Coastal Shower Doors, who created a custom door that worked for my space and shower setup. I love the thick glass and black frame, and how it goes almost all the way to the ceiling, while still allowing some ventilation around the door. They were very helpful in selecting the right design and helping me find an installer.

The space isn’t that large and there aren’t any windows, so it needed lots of white to brighten it up. IKEA makes really great bathroom vanities and I got mine in glossy white, which I think gives it an even higher-end look. It came with white handles, but we opted to go with matte black ones so they would pop against the white doors. The vanity came with a ceramic sink and we chose a TOTO faucet to pair with it to make it look more custom.

The bathroom has always been dark, as the only three windows are on the opposite side of the apartment, so lighting was key. It’s hard to find great bathroom lighting, but luckily Sonneman makes beautiful, sleek fixtures and I knew I had to get one. I love the minimalist look of their Stix Bath Bars. On the opposite wall, a sconce was added in matte black to blend in with the paint.

To break up all of the black and white, the space needed a pop of color. I’m not normally a green person, but once I spotted those Marimekko towels with the green band, I was sold! When the green was decided upon, we scoped the artwork over on Minted.com and chose this Lula print in Emerald Green—it matches perfectly. At that point, we thought bringing in another metal besides the chrome of the TOTO fixtures would warm it up, so we selected copper and ordered the Minted print with a copper frame. One copper item isn’t enough, so we scoured the internet for copper accessories and landed on a copper trash can from Umbra.

Various accessories (see below) were incorporated from CB2, H&M, Target, and ones I already owned, like the Boxcar Set of planters from Revolution Design House, which I repainted green to match and filled with succulents for texture and more greenery.

While I’m not ready to jump on another large renovation right now, I would definitely consider doing one in the future. I feel like the first one is just a major learning experience where things are going to go wrong, your timeline will triple, and so will your budget. That being said, I have no regrets and I’m really happy with the outcome!
