It’s by far not the best Echo drawing out there, but man his eyes captivate regardless. Love me some Echo. And speaking of, just posted up a new chapter on AO3 🥰

Okay guys it’s a hard chapter. I’ll just preface it that way - covers the loss of Tech
Excerpt:
When he landed, Echo and Boost went over the data again, hoping they could make some headway with the encryption. “I don’t know, Echo. You probably could have saved yourself some time and just gone straight to Tech with this.” Boost looked pretty defeated, looking at the technology and coding before him. “This is similar to our old encryption, but definitely more advanced. Maybe if I had a lot more time, I could crack it, but Tech would be far faster.” Echo sighed and nodded, knowing Boost was right. He stood and walked out of the hut where they kept their main computer and radio system, a disgusted, tired look on his face. He brushed his hand over his eyes, covering them for a moment, then decided to go look for Lara.
He found her on the basketball court, playing ball with Jek and Shaeeah, while Suu Lawquane watched with a smile from the sideline. Lara was dribbling the ball, bent over in a rather aggressive stance, watching the two children with careful eyes, looking for an opening in their defense to charge past them with the ball. The two kids were giggling and smiling, watching her, waiting for her to make her move, and when Lara finally did, they both grabbed her in a tight hug, holding on for their lives as Lara dragged them to the goal, laughing all the way. Echo couldn’t help but smile at the scene; she really did have a way with kids that was heartwarming. “Y’all are both such little cheaters - this isn’t football!!!”, Lara laughed helplessly. She stood and turned to see Echo there, next to Suu, his arms folded over his chest with a bemused look on his face. Lara handed the basketball to Shaeeah gravely and said “I need to go talk to Echo over there. You two practice hard, okay?” Lara straightened and breezed over to Echo with a happy smile, her gait and posture one of complete contentment, albeit somewhat unbalanced - she looked like she was smuggling a basketball under her shirt these days.
Echo smiled back at her, turning to intercept her so they could walk and talk. Lara was really heavy with child now, many months into her pregnancy. Everyone smiled that saw her when she walked by, her maternal glow lighting her like a candle from within. She hadn’t stopped going on missions as yet, but she’d basically stopped a couple months back, delegating the leadership more fully to Primer and Boost. She had promoted Primer to Captain (he’d deserved it for years, and really she felt herself a bad leader for that oversight), and Boost to Lieutenant as well, then brought along a couple of new sergeants out of necessity, by name of Falco and Phoenix. Cody had started taking his own small contingent of Dragons and clones out on missions, as did Rex. Overall, the Dragon Company had only ever consisted of one hundred clones, serving under General Lin and Primer. Now, they usually found themselves in groups of five, answering to whichever leader they got assigned to that day. Lara had taught them nothing, if not flexibility. Whether she liked it or not, Lara found herself being pushed firmly and lovingly back from active leadership by the clones, all of them naturally wanting to protect their beloved leader and her valuable baby.
“What’s up, Echo?” Lara asked as they walked along. She could tell something was troubling him; she could sense it within her even if it hadn’t been written all over his face.
“We got a new group of clones out - they’re settling in with the quarter master now - one of them even brought a girl with him.” He said this with a little smile and glanced over at Lara, who smiled back at the news. It was always good to hear that the clones were finding love and making families. “I was able to get a snippet of information off the computer of the ship we raided to rescue them. But I can’t crack the encryption on it.” He looked off over the sea, the irritation plain on his handsome face. “I have a very bad feeling about all of this, where they’re sending our brothers. I don’t know what it is, but for the first time I’m really a little scared.”
They’d reached Lara’s favorite spot on the hill, and stopped to look out over the fabulous sunset. “What are you afraid of, my Echo?” She asked him quietly, her arms crossed over her chest. She looked over at him, the tiniest smile on the corner of her lips - she still called him that, after all this time.
“I don’t know. With all the secrecy, I feel like there has to be some element of disposal to it. They’re taking us clones, and killing us off somewhere, where no one will say anything, hoping no one notices until it’s all over with. And who knows what they are doing to them there, before they’re killed? There have always been a lot of people in this galaxy who don’t even see us as people, so why would they care if they’re experimenting on us and then killing us?” His words made sense, and his sense of foreboding affected Lara, too.
“How are you going to get the information off the disk you made? I assume you already went to Boost with it.” She knew Boost was pretty good with code; if he and Echo together couldn’t break it, that really only left one option. And one barrier.
“I’m going to have to get Tech to look at it.” He said it a little reluctantly; he hadn’t seen Omega since he’d parted ways with the Batch on Coruscant. Tech and Wrecker had both told him how much she missed him, and how hard the adjustment had been for her, without him. To a large extent it was one reason the Batch hadn’t returned to Nidhogg for a good while; they didn’t want to upset the girl further. He saw Lara sigh, place her hand on her belly and then move to sit a bit heavily on the ground. It was strange seeing her moving in a slightly unbalanced way, her typically fit and trim figure distorted by the shape of the baby.
“Sorry, Echo, I just need to sit for a minute. If I don’t keep moving constantly, this thing makes my back annoyed,” she said as she rubbed her belly, a slightly amused, but strangely loving look on her face. Lara crossed her legs under herself for comfort, and watched as Echo sat with her immediately. “I’m sure Tech won’t refuse you. And you know Omega will be overjoyed to see you. Wrecker told me just the other day she’s been doing pretty well lately - Tech is even giving her flying lessons.” She smiled at Echo, the mischief fully apparent in her eyes. She could just imagine what that looked like - she’d been completely stunned that Tech could pull his fingernails out of the ship’s yoke long enough to trust Omega with the controls.
Echo laughed as well. It didn’t surprise him in the least that Wrecker had maintained contact with Lara. What had surprised him more was that Wrecker hadn’t put up more of a fight about wanting to stay on Nidhogg with the Dragon Company, so that he could be closer to his General. “Well, I might have go see that for myself. I have missed Omega. I wish Hunter had been more amenable to staying here. I hear they really like it on that island.”
Lara snorted a little. “I think it’s funny how Hunter ran from one beach side home to another. But yes, from everything Wrecker has told me, they like it on Pabu. And they’re eagerly taking bets behind Tech’s back about whether he’s going to ever make a move on that Phee chick. I need to meet this woman; anyone who’s able to get Tech’s attention off his data pad for more than sixty seconds is a hero in my book.”
Echo looked at her with an ironic expression. “The man used to stare at you for hours, Lara, like you were a mystery he had to solve. I think you already won that particular fight.”
“Well, everybody knows I’m a hero in my own book, Echo.” She gave him a mockingly serious look and then smiled and laughed. “I hope for his sake he actually does go for her. You all deserve happiness with someone who’ll love you back…” Lara looked at Echo very meaningfully while he gazed back with a ‘what?’, look on his own face.
“I do have someone that loves me back.” Echo pointed out.
“I mean physically, Echo.” Lara rolled her eyes at him and looked off in the distance. Silence reigned between them for a while, as Echo tried to come up with a rejoinder that would make sense, and put the argument to rest.
“I…don’t need that Lara. I can still feel the touch of you on my skin, the taste of you on my lips. The memories of our time together were part of what kept me alive on Skako Minor. There is no other touch I want, if I can’t have yours.” Echo reached over and took her hand with his, his expression serious, if not a little sad. “Letting you go was the hardest, but best choice I made in my life, and I’m pretty sure if I had to do it all over again, I’d make the same choice.” Lara met his eyes, her face sad, but understanding. She knew Echo would always be hers; she wondered quietly sometimes if she’d ruined him for others, tainting him with her love. Echo sensed the thought within her - he could see it on her face as well. “Hey. Lara.” He squeezed her hand softly. “I’ll always be the first man you made love to - really, truly made love to, in your long life. Rex can’t take that one away from me.” He gave her a slightly salacious smirk and she laughed.
“Very true, Echo. Touché.” She smiled suddenly, her gaze going unfocused, and looked at her belly, as if listening to something within her. Lara reached over for his hand and clamped it onto a spot on her abdomen, her smile so beautiful and quietly happy he stared, speechless. Echo felt a sudden nudge against his the palm of his hand and his focus changed to their joined fingers, his face going blank with shock. He looked up at Lara carefully, the question in his eyes obvious. “Yes. That was the baby.” Lara put some pressure on his hand, pressing it down a bit on that spot and he felt a sudden sharp jab from within her. Lara laughed. “It kicked you,” she giggled softly. Echo wished for a heartbreaking moment he still had two hands, so he could put the other on her as well. The thought flashed through him like a flare, but the after burn of it was clear on his face. Lara reached her hand up to his cheek and pressed her forehead against his, wishing she could make him see - make him know - how very unchanged her love was for him, no matter what the Techno Union had done. She had no words at that moment, so she stayed silent, he content to feel her touch, his hand resting against her belly, feeling the sudden swirls of movement within. Echo had always known Lara was a miracle, that everything about her was miraculous; here was further proof in his mind.
Eventually Echo removed his hand, and the two settled in to just sitting with each other quietly. Suddenly Lara spoke, the laughter just noticeable in her voice. “Do you remember that time I woke Fives up with a bag of frozen marbles down the front of his briefs?” Echo’s head whipped around, his eyes startled but already alight with remembered hilarity at the incident. Fives had been notoriously hard to wake up in the morning, often setting his alarm to full volume, then sleeping through it anyway. It drove Lara nuts, listening to it for long minutes waiting on Fives to notice it.
“I can still remember the sound of his head hitting the bottom of my bunk!” He snorted and then burst out laughing, Lara doing the same.
Lara just about couldn’t speak for giggling. “I swear to god he literally levitated off the bed…” She was laughing so hard she leaned forward, placing her hand on the ground to support herself, shaking from the memory.
“He screamed like a little girl - it was the funniest sound I’ve heard in my life.” Echo felt tears run down his cheeks, gasping for air, seeing Lara was also crying with laughter. “Lord, Lara. Those were simpler days.”
She took a deep, steadying breath, suddenly burst into giggles again, and covered her face as a reflex. “Whooo… okay. I’m done. Okay.” Lara looked at Echo helplessly and smiled. “They really were, weren’t they?”
Echo could still feel a laugh or two threatening to escape, but he realized - this was the first time he’d even so much as heard Lara mention Fives’ name since Floston. They’d had so many good memories together - the nights at 79s when they went dancing, the evenings they spent in the Dragon Cave watching TV shows and movies from Earth on her iPad. Days spent helping her dream up naughty pranks to pull on Master Windu, and what horrible supplies she could route through the quarter master to his office. Granted, the pranks had mostly been Lara and Fives, but Echo had usually been there to listen and shake his head at them. He felt Lara go silent and looked over at her, seeing the sudden swell of missing Fives hit her; it was like watching the sun be covered by dark clouds. She closed her eyes for a moment, took a breath and tried to smile bravely, but Echo could see how the loss of Fives still stung her like a near fresh wound.

OC Primer is a handsome dude, right?
Show of hands on who’d root for this brown eyed boy in a fanfic? Because I have a deal for you!

EXCERPT:
Primer and Boost were making a run for supplies, having taken a small squad to Ryloth for trading and purchasing. They wanted doonium for fuel, to supply their homes with warmth and get their ships off the ground. They planned to hang around on the planet for a while, maybe see if the men could get leads on other clones needing evac or help. The men disembarked the cargo ship and made their way into the city of Lessu, ready to bargain and buy. It didn’t take long to see it was a city more or less under marshal law. There were stormtroopers everywhere, and several fortified areas scattered around, all heavily guarded. They noted there were even areas of new construction, as if something had happened here fairly recently requiring rebuilding. Primer and Boost shrugged it off; Ryloth had always been a system at war, holding out against the Separatists as long as they could during the Clone War. They were a fierce and stubborn people, and the clones noted many furtive looks thrown their way from the natives. Primer nodded to his men to keep their hats down and heads low; clones were all rather easily recognizable since they shared the same face and voice, nearly the same build and gait. It wouldn’t do to get picked up by the Empire as deserters.
The men fanned out through the city, going about locating and purchasing the supplies they needed, but came up a bit empty when trying to buy doonium. It seemed the Empire had cornered the market on that particular product, taking over the mines and refusing to distribute the fuel to any other buyers. Primer noted the Twi’lek citizens seemed rather tight lipped and angry about the whole subject. They were mining the fuel, but it was basically being stolen from them right under their very noses. The city was uneasy, simmering in anger and ready to boil to the surface. It didn’t take the clones long to realize they should probably hurry their business and leave.
There was a bit of a to do happening on the edge of the shops, over at the landing zone for the city’s ambassadorial palace. An Imperial shuttle was standing ready for loading, and they noted a very tall, imposing figure in black, helmeted and cloaked like some kind of dark king. He was surrounded by a platoon of stormtroopers, and they were loading a group of what appeared to be prisoners on the shuttle. Primer wondered who in the galaxy that black figure could be; he’d never even heard of such a person before. Some of the prisoners appeared to be Twi’lek, but some were…clones. A couple of them suddenly put up a bit of resistance, and Primer was horrified to see the stormtroopers immediately start to beat the two men senseless while the dark man watched, his posture impassive. Boost stood next to Primer quietly watching the spectacle, and in their shock, they were noticed by a couple of the white clad stormtroopers on the periphery of the landing area, who raised an alarm that there were deserters among the crowd. Their cries got the attention of the figure in black, who turned his baleful glance in their direction, and ordered a squad of troopers to apprehend the clones. Primer and Boost turned and made to disappear into the crowd, hoping to lose their pursuers in the streets and warrens of Lessu.
This move only made the Man in Black send more troopers after them, and he evidently had little compunction about harming innocent civilians. He ordered his men to tear the city apart, spare no shop or street vendor in their search for the wayward clones, and Primer and his squad soon found themselves back at the periphery of the city, barricading themselves against the front of a building and using random carts and shipping containers for cover. The stormtroopers opened fire as soon as they saw Primer and the clones dig in. The Man in Black hung back a bit, watching the erstwhile battle unfold, studying the moves the clones were making. They seemed incredibly familiar to him, tactics he’d seen before as if in another life. When a Twi’lek child wandered onto the edge of their fire, Primer saw it and darted over to grab him, shielding the boy with his body and basically throwing him out of the way. It put Primer near a trooper, who moved to fire on him with a stunning blast. Primer grabbed a lid from a refuse bin for cover to redirect the blast at the trooper, missed his aim on the bounce and then took the shield and belted the trooper across the body with it. He followed that action up with a roundhouse kick that sent the stormtrooper flying into a heap, and rolled back under the incoming fire to his men, taking cover behind their barricade again. That was enough for the Man in Black’s memory to click. Only men from one group would have used a move like that. The Man commanded his troopers to pull back, and requested reinforcements from their cruiser orbiting the planet to be sent to the surface. He also had them set up an automatic heavy Z6 chain gun to fire on them in the meantime.
Primer knew some element about the fight had changed when the troopers pulled back and firing stopped for a moment. “What just happened, LT?” Boost asked in surprise and concern.
“Not sure,” Primer answered back tersely. “They may have made us,” he said with a worried tone. He could see them working on setting up the heavy gun; they were going to have to think up some plan fast or they’d all be dead soon.
“Well, what are we supposed to do about that? It’s just us. If we can’t get out of here and back to the ship without tearing Lessu apart, what should we do?” Boost was worried - it appeared to his trained eye that they were severely low on options.
Primer gave his sergeant a look out of the corner of his eye and a small shrug. Damned if he knew, the motion seemed to imply. Internally, he was doing his best to think up options, but he was seething really. He’d been a fool, standing there gaping like that where people could see his face. How could he have messed up so badly? What would the General do when she found out they were taken by the Empire? His anxiety was ratcheting up a notch every minute a solution didn’t present itself, which in turn was sending out signals he couldn’t control, or block. Belatedly, he realized she would know. The General would know they were in trouble because of his shared connection to her, and she would come for them, regardless of how he felt about that move. They had put her in danger with their actions, because Lara would not leave them to be taken.
Boost saw Primer freeze in some kind of terrible realization out of the corner of his eye, and was turning to ask what was wrong, what new threat was on the radar, when it was as if silence suddenly descended on them in a vacuum. The Man in Black turned to the troopers manning the heavy gun and gave them the order to open fire. In slow motion, Primer saw them turn to arm the gun and fire, but before the first blasts even got to their barricade, the bolts were stopped in midair, hanging in the open and vibrating with their potential power. Primer closed his eyes in knowledge and in some despair. It was too late to alter course now, though. As if time suddenly sped back up and sound returned with it, they looked over to see Lara standing behind them, holding the blaster bolts frozen by means of the Force.

My hardest attempt at realism to date; it took a lot of coaching and tweaking and correcting to get this to turn out. And I’m sure it’s still not right, but I think I’m going to leave it as it is for now; I’m close to just deleting or hiding it otherwise. Learning art is hard 🥺

Excerpt:
Lara sighed tiredly, her hand reaching up for her great sword. Her eyes passed over all the clones quickly, and then settled on Primer. “You need to leave, Primer. Get yourselves to the ships, now.” Lara looked over at Rex and simply gazed at him quietly, saying nothing for a long minute. “Rex, you need to leave as well. Get back on the Marauder, and all of you get out of here. You cannot help me in this fight. Having you here would only be a hindrance.” Her eyes were grave, and it made Rex feel abject panic.
“No, Lara, I’m not leaving you! Absolutely not!” Rex was shaking his head, starting to reach for her, when he saw her glance behind him, looking to Primer and Boost. Volte was standing with them as well, helping herd the rescued clones onto the freighters.
“Primer, you three get Rex off this planet now! Get him to safety, and all of you get out of here! That’s an order!” Lara’s command stopped the three men in their tracks and the force of it made Rex gasp. Lara’s loyal clones paused but a moment, then reached over and grabbed Rex bodily. Lara quickly stepped to Rex and kissed him, then focused on his eyes, wanting to capture their look and color one last time, if indeed this was to be her end. “I love you, Rex, but you have to go.” Her expression was one of pain, a grimace at the excruciating feel of severing one’s soul. She looked and nodded to Primer, and the three Dragons wrestled Rex back to the Marauder, where Echo was standing, also starting grasp the direness of the situation. Echo started to protest along with Rex, and moved to force himself past the Dragon Company clones, intending to fight his way down to Lara. A huge hand grabbed him by the arm and another reached past him to grab Rex. Wrecker had heard Lara’s command, and while he didn’t fully understand why she’d made the order, he knew it wouldn’t help the General for the two men she loved most to get in her way. Rex was screaming Lara’s name, fighting Wrecker’s grip as hard as he could, Wrecker pulling him all the while back to the Marauder’s ship ladder.
Having seen Wrecker secure Rex and Echo, she’d made eye contact with the big clone and nodded to him in thanks, feeling a real, deep love for him in that moment. Faithful Wrecker; her eyes were sad and his full of desperate concern for her, but he did as she had commanded. Primer, Volte and Boost stood beside the Marauder with the Batch and her Dragons backed up to take position on their ships, while Lara turned and strode over to Baiulus. She climbed on the dragon’s great back, and when she settled herself between his shoulders, they saw her drop her head for a moment, steadying her mind and taking a breath. When she let that breath out slowly, the clones all gasped in unison as light spilled from Lara, revealing her true form as the goddess she was. It was like seeing a star suddenly appear in their midst. She was so bright, they could barely see her outline within the pure, blue white light, and the stones of the Silmarils within her crown radiated light like beacons. Lara reached down and patted Baiulus on the neck and said “Okay my friend. It’s time. Show him what you’re made of.” Baiulus shook his head and roared powerfully, drawing himself up a bit like a snake preparing to strike. Bright golden flames suddenly shot from between his great scales, streaking down the line of his body and revealing him to be made of the very flames that burned within his mighty breast. Lara’s men all stared in wonder at both their General and the dragon, unaware that this was who they’d been serving alongside all along - while they’d accepted she was a goddess, here was the living proof of it.
Lara reached up and pulled her great sword over her shoulder, placing her helmet so seldom used on her head with her left hand. Baiulus stood to his full height, spreading his great leathery wings and hauling down with them to generate thrust, pulling himself skyward off the ground. He carried Lara forward, taking the battle to Morgoth. The skies above them filled with dark, threatening storm clouds, and wind started to swirl around them, picking up dust and debris. Lightning crashed, striking the ground with great peals of thunder. The monster stood, his flames and smoke swirling about him, pulling his darkness in as if wearing a heavy cloak. He reached down and pulled the coiled whip off his belt and drew his great sword to match Lara’s move. There would be battle. He was ready.
The dragon surged forward, tucked his wings and darted in towards Morgoth’s face. He spat fire at the monster’s eye, and Lara heard Morgoth roar in anger, as he reached up to swat at them like an annoying fly. Baiulus surged past the monster’s head and banked to come back around; Morgoth let fly with his whip, which broke out into flame. The tip of the angry flail made contact with Lara’s back as Baiulus flew past, and with a cry she fell from her mount’s back. The clones watched in horror as she streaked to the planet’s surface like a meteor.
Lara got back up; holding her great sword in her right hand, she drew her short sword. She would fight Morgoth from the ground. Baiulus could continue to harry him from the air. She could do this. The smoking monster swung his great sword and brought it crashing down on Lara with enough power to cut her in half, but she withstood the blow, crossing her swords above her head to block. She called the power of the Force to her and it seemed as if a glowing dome of light covered her - a small shield against his blows. Morgoth followed the sword strike with a lash of his whip, the lashing tip breaking through the Force’s energy. It struck her ankle and yanked her off her feet. She gave an angry grunt and scrambled back to her feet, working to defend herself with one of her swords. Morgoth spun and kicked her, sending her flying backwards to skid almost fifty feet in the dirt. Lara felt for the smallest moment that she’d had the wind knocked out of her, and she rolled to her side quickly and looked back at her troops. The clones all realized as one - Lara was heavily outmatched. With the cold grip of terror in their hearts, they wondered how she could possibly win this battle? The men suddenly knew paralyzing fear - they could very well be watching the death of their beloved leader, right before their eyes, and of the child within her.
Lara got back up, crouched low and watching the monster above her as it was momentarily distracted by Baiulus’ furious attack. The dragon bit and clawed at Morgoth, ripping large tears in the once beautiful god’s body. The blood that poured down his skin burned like molten fire, and he got in one good swipe at Baiulus, flinging the dragon away from him. Lara had taken that moment to rush Morgoth, trying to get in below his gaze, but he turned back and suddenly rammed his great sword into her gut, a gleaming smile of evil on his dark face. Their eyes met for a long moment, and he laughed into hers, speaking in the ancient language of the Aïnur, that she and her Father Iluvatar might hear: “See this, my Father. I have killed your daughter. I will have the Silmarils, the power of their light shall be darkened for eternity.” He laughed aloud now and suddenly turned his blade, widening the insertion site for maximal damage, then yanked it from her body as she collapsed to her knees, blood flowing from her freely.
It seemed time stood still for a moment. Rex saw Lara turn her eyes to meet his, then Lara looked to Echo, and moved finally to meet Primer’s gaze. She held Primer’s stare for a moment, and internally she screamed to him, “Primer GO! Get everyone off Floston. Baiulus will open the portal for you. I have to destroy this planet to destroy him. There will be nothing left. GO!” Rex watched her in dawning horror. The look on her face - she was about to do something awful. Something permanent and terrible.
Primer screamed an order for all the ships to take off; Rex only vaguely heard the words inside his head because he was staring at Lara so intently. The freighters and LAATs took off, and Primer, Volte and Boost ran to the Marauder, climbing aboard and hauling Rex into the ship’s interior. Primer turned towards the cockpit. “Tech, get this ship off the ground, NOW!” Tech did as told, quickly, hauling back on the collective and gunning the Marauder off the ground. Rex scrambled to the rear gunner’s mount to see Lara’s shrinking form as they pulled away; he saw the massive shape of Baiulus streak past them, heading for higher altitude. The dragon quickly passed the ships and opened a massive portal before them; the Empire’s blockade would not be able to stop them leaving. Rex, Echo, Primer, and Volte sandwiched themselves into the gunner’s mount in time to see Lara turn to look at them one last time.
I can’t win this, Lara thought wearily. But maybe, just maybe I can take him with me. Lara felt her life flash before her eyes with the decision made. She saw the beautiful face of her Elenna, laughing in the sunlight as they streaked along, galloping their horses across the green fields of Rohan, the wind lifting their hair. Battles she’d fought and won, screaming in triumph with her warriors. The moment she’d met Rex, the sight of his warm brown eyes gazing back at her. Laughing with Echo at her desk on Coruscant. Making love to Fives, the feel of his hands on her body. The look on Wrecker’s face in the hallway of Admiral Trench’s ship after she destroyed the droid sentry. Waking up on Nidhogg and seeing Primer’s face above hers. The feel of her child within her; her hand went to her belly for a moment when she realized - she was no longer alone in this life. She was giving up so much, to save the men she loved. Her motley family. It was worth it, all of it.
Lara looked back at the retreating form of the Marauder, tears shining in her eyes. She reversed her great sword in her right hand and brought it to her chest over her heart, bowing her head in farewell. In her heart, through her bond of blood, Lara spoke to her men. “I love you all. Take care of each other. I’ll always be with you, a part of you, and I’ll see you again on the shores of Valinor.”
Rex heard her message within his heart, and registered the shocked looks on Echo and Primer’s faces. They both looked horrified, stunned into a silence that felt like someone had grabbed their hearts and squeezed them into stillness. Rex started to yell back “NOOO! Lara NOOO!!” He started to beg, and plead, and claw at the glass of the ship canopy. He wanted off the ship, he wanted to get back to her. He didn’t care if that meant he fell 20,000 feet to get to her.
Lara watched as the ship continued to climb, seeing that the Imperial ships were also climbing back to space, evacuating the planet. With a weary sigh, Lara took her great sword, and called all of her power to her, all the power within the planet itself, all of the Force - even the power of Vader and Palpatine. She drew it within herself, as if settling a heavy cloak about her body, and Vader watched from a far distance out the windscreen of his ship, feeling his power draining away from within him, as the light surrounding Lara grew into the pure light of a white star, the winds surrounding her so strong that the very air grew alive with static electricity and lighting split the sky, striking around her nearly every second. For the briefest second, the small part of Anakin within Vader welcomed the feeling of his power draining away, hoping there was some chance for the goddess he’d once called a friend.
Lara looked up at Morgoth and took a deep breath to steady herself. She felt a sudden surge of rage and frustration, bitter loss rising up to choke her and she felt the need to scream at the beast before her. She had a flash back to her time spent with the Vikings, the memory of their berserkers and Valkyries giving strength to her fury. Still she pulled power to her, even as she started to speak.
“Lo, there do I see my Father.” She turned away from the retreating form of the Marauder to face the black horror of Morgoth. “Lo, there do I see my Mother and my Sisters and my Brothers!” Lara concentrated, drawing more and more power of the Force to herself. “Lo, there do I see the LINE OF MY PEOPLE, BACK TO THE BEGINNING!” She took two long strides toward the cursed form of her ancient enemy, the enemy of her people and of all creation. “Lo, they do call to me! They bid me take my place among them, in the halls of VALINOR, WHERE THE BRAVE MAY LIVE FOREVER!!!“ A briefly quirky idea crossed her mind like an inappropriately timed giggle - they won’t mind that I adapted the prayer a little, she thought. She raised her eyes to the nightmare of darkness standing before her, his cruel smile taunting her.
Lara swung her great sword in an arc over her head and then brought it down with her short sword, stabbing them with both hands into the earth before her and connecting suddenly to the power of the Force she had gathered as she let out a scream of fury, like a Valkyrie in battle. The light of that power expanded out from her like an exploding nebula, a nuclear blast strong enough to destroy all in its radius. Almost in slow motion the men on the Marauder could see the ground around her, the surface of the planet, and the body of Morgoth in front of her fracture into pieces, his flames and her light mingling then roiling forward in a great parabola of light as the pressure wave of power pulsed forward. Tech saw the shockwave of the blast coming behind them and out of the corner of his eye he registered the massive form of Baiulus swoop over them, opening a portal. He gunned the ship through to save them all, leaving the sight of Lara’s destruction behind in a growing asteroid field where once there was a beautiful planet of paradise. He heard Rex screaming behind him in the back of the ship, saw Omega’s face pale and streaked with tears, and Tech himself started to feel tears spill down his cheeks, his breath struggling to come out in something short of a sob.
“GO BACK!!!” Rex was beside himself screaming. “We have to go back, we have to get her!” He was so desperate he was about to tear the ship apart, and he suddenly moved to the door to open the hatch. He could pressurize his helmet; he could skydive back to her. He wasn’t leaving Lara there. Wrecker watched Rex’s frantic movements through blinding tears; he finally grabbed Rex to stop him from hitting the button to open the Marauder’s hatch. He held Rex in a great bear hug to restrain him, while Rex fought him like a mad man. Primer looked over at Volte with a heartbroken expression and nodded once. Volte pulled a syringe from a case in his pocket and quickly stabbed Rex in the deltoid to sedate him. Rex crumpled in a limp heap on the floor, a look of betrayal on his face aimed at the two Dragons. Volte reached down to check on him quickly, then stood and looked around the room at the faces of the clones. The men were all silent with despair, all crying, trying to grapple with the loss of their beloved General. Primer looked up at Echo, seeing the man’s face was wet with tears; Echo suddenly brought his hand to his face and turned to sit on the floor where he’d been standing, sobbing softly into his glove.

As I discussed with someone yesterday, I love me some Howzer. His hair is just so fresh. Here I was going for a more introspective look on his choices and seeing the Empire was definitely not the Republic. Hope you like!
He even shows up in the second book of my fanfic, Newton’s Third Law.

EXCERPT:
Howzer made his way over to their table and asked Echo to introduce him to Rex and Lara. He’d met Rex once, long ago, but didn’t figure he would be remembered. Their days as cadets were long gone now. Echo immediately reached across the table to poke Lara in the back, seeing her whirl around to see who needed her, her blue eyes wide and attentive.
“Lara, Captain Howzer wanted to meet you.” Echo leaned over and grabbed Rex as well, tugging on his arm so that he turned to them. “And you, Rex.” Rex gave Echo all of his attention, so he could hear him over the noise. “This is Captain Howzer - he was over the clones on Ryloth when the Batch went in to get General Syndulla out. Captain Howzer, this is Captain Rex, formerly commander of the 501st Battalion, and this, is General Lara Lin, leader of the Dragon Company.” Echo finished with a proud tone in his voice. Rex gave him a look that was only minimally sour; he knew where Echo’s preference lay and couldn’t disagree with him.
Howzer looked appropriately wowed by Lara, taking in her obviously gravid appearance along with her beauty. He was momentarily tongue tied, until he risked a glance at Rex, who gave him a look back with a slightly arched eyebrow and a knowing smirk. “General, it’s an honor to meet you, finally. And you, Captain. I think everybody has heard so much about you, both. General, thank you for setting up this place for us clones. Everything here is… well, it’s amazing.” He finished his little speech in a rush, blushing a bit at her gaze.
Lara smiled at him warmly, and said “You’re most welcome, Howzer. I’m glad we were able to get you out of your situation and bring you here. I hope you find the life on Nidhogg a place to start over.”
