Lesson # 12 : Deeper View of the Basic Phrases
Giving thanks and saying sorry
Basic Phrases of being thankful
감사합니다 (Gamsahamnida): formal polite; commonly used when someone has given you something or has done something for you.
감사해요 (Gamsahaeyo): informal polite; mainly used between friends, or with people you have met before and have some kind of relationship with.
고맙슴니다  (Gomapseumnida): formal polite; used with감사합니다 interchangeably.
고마와요 (Gomawoyo): informal polite; used if you know the person you are speaking to.
Although it is okay to use informal polite form, Koreans tend to used formal language when thanking someone.
This way, the person you are thanking, feels important and respected
Only use impolite form when thanking someone you know—like friends—or those who are your junior.
Saying Sorry
죄송합니다(joesonghamnida): formal polite; used in a formal setting to show respect
미안합니다(mianhabnida): formal polite; say to strangers or people who you want to show respect to
미안해요(mianhaeyo): informal polite; used in everyday settings with people you already know
Goodbye
Remember this from Lesson # 2? :
1.안녱히 계세요 
Literally translates into ‘stay in peace’
If you are leaving, but the other person(s) is staying
 2. 안녱히 가세요
Literally translates into ‘go in peace’
If you are staying, but the other person(s) is leaving
Now, here are some other ways to say Goodbye:
잘 있어요
Said to juniors when you are leaving, but they are staying
“Stay well”
잘 가세요
Said to peers or juniors when they are leaving and you are staying
 “Go well”
다음에 또 봐요
Said if you want to see that person again
“See you next time”
안녕히 주무세요
Said to those you want to show respect
Only when those are sleeping at the same place as you or if you are on the phone and you want to go to bed
Is NOT casual; said to people like parents or in-laws
“Goodnight”
잘자요
Said to juniors who are sleeping at the same place as you or if you are on the phone and you want to go to bed
“Goodnight”
Please and You’re Welcome
제발 = please (jaebal)
천만에요 = You are welcome (literally Not at all) (cheonmaneyo)
무슴 말씀을요 = You are welcome (literally Don’t mention it) (museum malsseumeulyo)
