The purpose built high quality Troy Wharf office building for the Marble and Granite Centre is located on an industrial site set within the green belt near Rickmansworth. The four storey building is partially submerged into the landscape on three sides within a disused concrete retaining wall. The new building projects above the ground disguising itself to the lake with a south facing mono pitch green roof, creating a fully structural glazed facade overlooking the site. The building utlises many sustainable features including a ground source heat pump for heating and cooling and ventilation heat recovery system throughout.
What was the brief? The brief for the building was to provide sustainable high quality office accommodation for the Marble and Granite Centre a leading importer and distributor of natural stones in the UK.
What are the sustainability features? The building incorporates the following sustainable features: 1. The building is heated and cooled via a geothermal heating system. Three 100 meter bore holes in front of the building provide warm water to a heat pump which in turn supply a fully integrated underfloor heating system and ceiling mounted fan coils. 2. Ventilation to the building is managed by an air supply and extract fan with heat exchanger to minimise heat loss. 3. The building incorporates a south facing sedum green roof, which helps to retain surface rain water and increases biodiversity on site. 4. The building reuses an existing insitu concrete retaining wall there by maintaining the embodied carbon on site and minimising the structure for the new building.
What building methods were used? Building methods included: – 1. The building is supported on a new concrete raft foundation supporting a steel structural frame. 2. The new composite floor slabs providing lateral stability to the existing walls. A drained cavity tanking system was designed to deal with the high water table and large area of retaining walls. 3. Internally the unobstructed office areas on each floor are maximised by the positioning of the lift, stair and services at the rear of the plan. The basement provides storage and changing areas along with plant and utility space. 4. The use of natural stone to the floor, stair and work surfaces complements the internal glazed partitions maintaining a light and airy feel to the interiors.
How is the project unique? The project is unique in the following areas: – 1. Reusing the existing concrete retaining walls which related to a previous industrial use. 3. Designing a new office building without detracting from the marble and granite slabs stored and displayed on site.
What were the solutions? The design solutions to the key challenges are: – 1. Locating the majority of the building underground, and providing a mono-pitch green roof that disguises the structure when viewed from the lake. 2. The existing insitu concrete walls were laser scanned to establish its exact profile allowing new steel frame to be tailors to fit the existing opening. A darrained cavity waterproof system was installed to allow for an moisture ingress through the existing structure. 3. Conceiving a minimal façade appearance of a single plane of frameless glass that helps mirror the surrounding countryside whilst subtly referencing the monolithic nature of the stone slabs.

Fans around the world can get comfy with “Friends.” 
As part of a flurry of promotions celebrating the 25th anniversary of the NBC hit comedy’s premiere, 30 replicas of the iconic fringed orange couch – seen in the Central Perk coffeehouse and in the show’s original opening credits – are going on tour this month to locations around the world, USA TODAY reveals exclusively.
From the Grand Canyon to the Empire State Building, from Stonehenge to the Eiffel Tower, fabric and waterproof versions of the sofa are being placed at key locations surrounding the Sept. 22 anniversary of the show’s premiere. (See the full list of sites below).  The stunt hearkens back to a similar effort by HBO, which hid six Iron Throne replicas around the world last March to promote that series’ final season.

“If you had told me that we’re going to come up with a show that, 25 years later, one piece off furniture is so iconic you could put it in the Empire State Building and you’d know what it is, It’s beyond surreal,” says co-creator David Crane in an interview.
The history of the orange ‘Friends’ couch
Where did the couch come from? Not a thrift store or swap meet, despite searching for the perfect boho piece by set decorator Greg Grande, who eventually found it combing through the basement storage area at the Warner Bros. studio in Burbank, California. “Literally in the back corner, shoved under another piece, was this sofa with beautiful carved wood,” he recalls.

Grande thought it was perfect for Central Perk, for which he took design inspiration from the Insomnia Cafe in West Hollywood. But the first rehearsal for the show’s pilot episode drew criticism: “I remember explicitly, there were network and studio notes because there was a rip in the back of the sofa and it was a little tattered on the arms. I had to redo some of the fringe.” But director James Burrows went to bat for the Central Perk couch as “absolutely believable and real,” Grande says. “The compromise was for me to take a piece of tapestry throw” and cover the biggest rip.
After the series won a pickup and prepared to begin its historic 10-season, 236-episode run, Grande found the same fabric in Europe and reupholstered the sofa. Then he put a piece of plywood under the cushion to keep the actors from sinking into it too deeply.
Eventually, he had a second couch made; the first can still be seen on the Warner Bros. studio tour, as a cultural touchstone for both older and younger fans, who weren’t even born when the show premiered in 1994 but have binged every episode on Netflix. (It’s moving to the new HBO Max service next year). 
What’s “amazing” to Crane is “that there are kids who are discovering the show and liking it, that it’s still somehow relevant. That’s the part that’s absolutely surreal.”

The “Friends” Pop-Up Experience, a memorabilia museum and gift store, will open in New York’s SoHo neighborhood from Sept. 7 to Oct. 6. (Tickets are sold out).
Crane, co-creator Marta Kauffman and executive producer Kevin Bright will reminisce at a Tribeca Television Festival panel in New York on Sept. 13.
Twelve top episodes will be screened at movie theaters across the country Sept. 23, Sept. 28 and Oct. 2.
A Central Perk Lego set is now available in stores and on Lego’s website. 
And a collection of “Friends”-inspired home furnishings, including an apothecary coffee table, is available at Pottery Barn stores, although Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) notoriously despised the chain. (Grande says his pitch for a furniture line to Warner Bros. was shot down years ago.)

The Simple Basement Remodel - Or is It?
Most men and women believe a basement remodel is among the simplest home remodeling jobs to finish. More often than not, it is really one of the more complex projects. Basements often have drainage and water problems, inadequate ceiling heights, older sloping concrete floor slabs, no insulation, and no simple means to connect the plumbing. And the majority of people anticipate the basement to serve many purposes. Frequently the basement was made to accommodate work and perform, media rooms, storage and craft places and many different uses. So unless you're looking for a easy, one-room remodel, be prepared to address numerous challenges.
Measure the head height
Many basements don't have sufficient floor to ceiling height to create livable space. Older homes particularly have inadequate head height because the space was only ever supposed to be used as storage. Additionally, basements will often have pipes and ductwork that hang down below the floor structure of the level above the basement. It is frequently impossible or too expensive to move these. So when measuring head height, measure from the lowest objects on the ceiling. Be sure the basement is dry
Don't put money and labor into a cellar that is not dry without solving the issue. If the basement has water problems, a drainage system would be your best solution to fix the issue. Typically some of the floor slab has been eliminated around the inside of the basement perimeter and stone and drainage pipe have been installed to drain to a sump pump place at which the water collects. The sump pump will periodically drain the water to the outside when necessary. If water is coming through the middle of the slab, it could be required to put in drainage inside that region of the slab too.
It may be tempting to try out some of those roll-on waterproofing methods. Typically these do not provide an enduring solution. It is important to create a means for the water to drain away easily. Water will take the course of least resistance, so making an easy method for the water to drain would be the very best approach to keep a dry basement.
Insulate the walls
Most authorities will need the walls of the basement be insulated if is being turned into living area. Usually this is accomplished by installing 2x4 stud walls adjacent to the basement walls and installing fiberglass batts. Remember that wood that isn't pressure treated should not be connected with concrete, so often times the 2x4 walls have been held away from the concrete, so only the bottom wall plate has to be pressure treated. Consider using a greater R-value foam insulation rather than fiberglass. Since foam insulating material has a greater R-value per inch, then you can lower the depth of the perimeter insulating walls by around 2". This means more floor space. Also a closed cell foam will act as vapor retarder as well, which will help keep the wall cavity dry.
If you are adding a bathroom, assess how it will be plumbed
Many basements need an additional bathroom since it's inconvenient to go upstairs every time you need to use the bathroom. Installing a basement bathroom can be a challenge because most basements have a concrete slab as the floor. Usually this means cutting out portions of the slab to install drains for toilets, showers or tubs, and other fixtures. Do this instead of installing a floor on top of the slab and having a step up to the bathroom. In the end, it will be worth the additional cost.
It is also necessary to assess how the house is connected to the sewer, and the elevation of the sewer. It is easier to install a bathroom when the sewer outlet is below the level of the new basement bathroom drains. If the sewer outlet is above the basement floor (as it often is in older homes) then the sewerage will need to be pumped up to the sewer outlet. Alarms and other safety systems should be installed to alert the occupants when the pump fails or there is a power outage.

Adding a bedroom?
A basement bedroom is a popular item to include in a basement remodel. A particular challenge of adding a bedroom is the requirement for an egress window to allow individuals to escape if there is a fire. Since the size of this window is quite large (it is actually sized to allow a fire-fighter to gain access to the house with equipment on), the window will often be partially below the exterior surface level, or grade. To solve this problem, a window-well is constructed on the exterior of the house to allow access to the window. This also has the added benefit of increasing the level of light in the basement, making it seem more open and connected to the outdoors. There are minimum sizes for egress windows and window wells, so following the code is important, otherwise you will not pass the building inspection.
Make it multipurpose
A basement will serve many functions, so it's important to plan for and consider all the uses. Basements are often used as play areas for children, work areas, sleeping areas, storage areas, exercise areas, and media rooms. Consider how materials chosen for the floors and walls will aid in allowing the space be used for multiple uses. Also keep in mind that if children will be playing on the floor, a basement floor is often quite cold, so carpet may be a good choice since it usually has a thick insulating pad. If you want a hard surface floor, consider a floating floor of wood or cork (but keep in mind that you often have to test how much moisture is coming through the slab to see if the product will be suitable for your application).
A basement remodel is one of the most popular remodels because often times it takes advantage of space that is already existing. While it appears to be simple, it can often be one of the more challenging projects to complete. But a well design basement often becomes the preferred'hang out space', so it is worth the investment of funds and time. In 1994, Prosper and Martine Assouline published their first book, La Colombe d’Or, on the history of their favorite hotel in the South of France, with photographs by Prosper and text by Martine. The publishing house began as a family company in the basement of the couple’s apartment in Paris and one year later, the firm opened its first office on rue Danielle Casanova in Paris. The company later opened more offices, first in New York, and then in Venice, Geneva, Istanbul, and London. The company’s first book series was the Memoire collection of books focusing on individuals and companies in fashion, jewelry, design, and art. Initial publications included books about AzzedineAlaïa, Chanel, Vionnet, and Dior. As of 1997, about half a million editions from the Memoire collection had been sold, with 27 titles on Paris in addition to others.
Assouline has partnered with fashion companies, including Poiret, Chanel, Pucci, Dior, Goyard, Coach, Andrée Putman, and Valentino to create special editions and trunks.Assouline titles have been published in multiple different languages. In 2001, Assouline published Lee Radziwill’s memoir, Happy Times, the first book of the Icons collection, which focuses on travel and style. Assouline also produces the “Impossible Collection” of books and the “Ultimate Collection”, a series of limited-edition hand-bound oversize volumes with hand-tipped illustrations.
In 2002 Assouline published the book Bright Young Things by Brooke de Ocampo.[17] Then in 2007, the company owners relocated to New York City, and that same year they began to partner with the Council of Fashion Designers of America. In 2011 Prosper Assouline was awarded the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres from the French Ministry of Culture for his work in publishing. In 2012, Assouline produced a waterproof book on the subject of the South Pole, as well as Gaia, a book of photos taken on the International Space Station by Guy Laliberté.
In 2015, Assouline launched a “Haute Couture” furnishings collection called “Assouline Interiors”. Assouline also produces accessories, bookbags, and bindery. They have also designed private libraries and lounges in New York City in buildings including 432 Park, The Caledonia, and The Shephard. In 2016, the French Institute Alliance Française awarded the Assoulines with the Art de Vivre award for their publications.
