He is 5000 years old. He is a 14 year old boy. He cannot touch silver without physically melting. He eats pigeons that think he is handsome. He measures distances in rat ass lengths. He has three boyfriends. He is deeply traumatised by lions. He can belly dance. He hates the cops. I didn't say his name but he popped into your head, didn't he?

Imagined an ancient supernatural entity going "I am called many names, most of which are obscene or insulting so I won't repeat them in front of you to protect your impressionable mind" to a child protagonist, and then remembered that Bartimaeus of Uruk would in fact fucking say that.

He is a british gouvernement official. He is a little boy. He cares a lot about his clothes and still doesn't manage to be fashionable. He stomps his feeties when he gets angry. He has comitted war crimes. He produces propaganda for the state. He wants approval from every woman that has ever been in his life. He once almost knocked himself out by running into a wall. He has a deadname but somehow isn't trans. I didn't say his name, but he popped into your head didn't he?

The Bartimaeus Of Uruk: mostly tells the truth about the actual narrative with a generous helping of spin and opinionated commentary, but spends half the story going off on tangents and humorous anecdotes that may or may not be complete bullshit.
I feel like many people have a fundamental misconception of what unreliable narrator means. It's simply a narrative vehicle not a character flaw, a sign that the character is a bad person. There are also many different types of unreliable narrators in fiction. Being an unreliable narrator doesn't necessarily mean that the character is 'wrong', it definitely doesn't mean that they're wrong about everything even if some aspects in their story are inaccurate, and only some unreliable narrators actively and consciously lie. Stories that have unreliable narrators also tend to deal with perception and memory and they often don't even have one objective truth, just different versions. It reflects real life where we know human memory is highly unreliable and vague and people can interpret same events very differently

Faquarl in the kitchen of the Ambassador Hotel going "There is no pain, Bartimaeus, no pain!" to try to convince him that getting stuck in a human body is a good idea while Bartimaeus is trying not to pass out from the agony of being on Earth for 2 years like:

oh god though:
Faquarl: telling the story of how some idiot tried to hold up the kitchen he was working in
Some other random djinni: commenting about the absurdity of using a knife to threaten a cook in a kitchen even if said cook wasn't a high-level djinni.
Bartimaeus: absolutely struggling with himself to not make the "sharpest knife in the drawer" pun because he knows damn well he will catch a meat cleaver in the face for it (he eventually decides it's worth it)
Thinking about when I worked at a shitty restaurant + one night it was just me + 3 other women on closing shift, so some guy came in the back and waved a knife around, presumably for money but I’m not actually certain, bc he was met with the bartender holding a much bigger knife, a tiny teenager wielding a cast iron pan, an elderly woman holding up a crockpot of clearly boiling water, and me, turning on the meat slicer with eye contact for maximum effect. He left, but the moral of the story is not girl power or whatever, it’s just. Why the fuck would you threaten a room full of underpaid and sleep-deprived blue-collar workers surrounded by lethal weapons.

Just looked up Tycho Brahe on Wikipedia and realized something Bartseq related.
You know how Bartimaeus talks about his career with Tycho and that he made him a gold nose after he lost his in a duel, and won his friendship and respect after that and was subsequently mostly just summoned when Tycho wanted a chat? But there was an implied large amount of hijinx and shenanigans before that?
I was picturing this as stuff involving an adult magician, but I just found out that not only did the real life Tycho Brahe lose his nose in a duel, but IRL that happened when he was 20 years old.
If the life of the one in Bartimaeus's universe follows a similar timeline this means it's very likely that Tycho first summoned Bartimaeus as an apprentice and most of the pranks and shenanigans Bartimaeus references happened when Tycho was a teenager!
...why am I not fucking surprised. Of course one of the very few magicians Bartimaeus has ever talked about like he liked or respected them in any way would be someone who first summoned him as a teenager. A teenager who was an avid astronomer, i.e. was curious about realms beyond Earth.
I swear to god, Stroud did you do this on purpose?
