What seems like a simple, tragic event turns out to be so much more. Hepworth keeps adding layers and revealing secrets until we get the truth. It is interesting that she uses the voice of the woman that jumped as a POV. She's not a ghost - not interacting with the other characters just giving a different perspective. The team of Barrie Kreinik and Jessica Douglas-Henry do a fabulous job with the audiobook performance. Kreinik has narrated several of Hepworth's books and always does a fantastic job. Be sure to read the author's note where SH tells where the idea for this book came from - long lockdowns in Melbourne and something about "marriage and murder" I think this is the best work from Hepworth so far. Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins was a popular January BOTM pick. “Two friends charter a boat to a deserted island. Another boat is already there. Everyone is chummy - until a stranger shows up. And now someone is dead.” This is one of those books with dual timelines, unreliable narrators and adults behaving badly. There are no likable characters. The setting is idyllic 🏝 except for the skull and the creepy shed. One thing - there’s a HUGE PLOT HOLE. The story is entertaining. There’s an appropriate twistiness at the end. We Are the Brennans was a July BOTM pick. “Sunday Brennan wakes up in an LA hospital after a drunk-driving accident. She swallows her pride and moves back home to NY. She soon realizes her family still needs her. Especially after a dangerous man from her past threatens the family with financial ruin. The Brennans must confront painful mistakes to find a way forward together.” This is a book for folks that like big family dramas. Lots of it here. And so many secrets. The story jumps around to several POVs but it works here. Barrie Kreinik does a great job with the voice performance so it’s easy to keep it all straight. Not sure how l feel about the ending. I guessed part of it but Lange does leave a little bit open-ended. I did not like Kale’s ending but you have to decide. Fans of Ask Again, Yes should like this.
