Freedom and Diversity of Religion
By Dhen Angelo Andres
Religion provides a huge role in one's life and to the entire nation, by means of promoting social solidarity and welfare, influencing political system and it also inculcates social virtues. We are much aware that in this country people were subdivided into different religions. This religion includes, Roman Catholic, Muslims, Evangelical, Iglesia ni Cristo etc. wherein some of this mentioned religions are assimilated by foreign invaders.
In this age and time, the discrepancy of religions has caused numerous dilemmas inside and outside the country, maybe because each party differs in doctrines. That's why it is very important for us to have freedom of religion considering that it gives peace, love, huge understanding and respect to each and everyone despite of the contrast.
According to Baroness Anelay "Freedom of religion and belief can help in the struggle against violent extremism." Which I strongly agree with. Because if we are able to abide the contrast of doctrines in each religion, rest assured the diversity we have will lead us to harmony. But there questions are flashing in my mind looking for answers if Philippines have Freedom of Religion? If yes, why terrorism is present nowadays? To think that Muslims are the ringleader of the said terrorism wherein there are numerous casualties reported and found out that the cause of the said attack in some of the civilians is that they are Catholics.
In my own perspective, the reason behind this rebellion of the Muslim community is they are being isolated from the other religion, that’s why they want to separate Mindanao from the Philippines for them to be able to live without being criticized by other people. They feel that they have no right to execute and express their beliefs. According to Jamel Cayamodin, PhD, an associate professor III at UP Diliman's Institute of Islamic Studies, Muslims are automatically labeled as extremists, uneducated, and poor due to what appears in various forms of media. He explains that with the immediate and far-reaching power that it possesses, media greatly influences not only audience’s perceptions but also their behavior. Viewers instantly believe what they see on television, movies, or the Internet without even confirming the veracity of those portrayals.
To have freedom of religion is to have peace. A certain community consists of different individuals that have different religions. If the different sectors of religion are able to give respect on beliefs and practices of other religions, there will be unity. If there is unity there will be peace. Peace is a much needed necessity inside a community. It contributes cooperation and satisfactory in the community's diversity. And if every community abides freedom of religion that causes peace, rest assured there will be also a peaceful nation.
To have freedom of religion is to have love. We all know that love plays an important role to our lives, it is really a pleasure to be loved and to show love to others. Once you acquire the freedom you are lasting for you will learn how to love and unlearn anger towards other religions. And to achieve love is to accept the dissimilarities of your religion to others.
To have freedom of religion is to have huge understanding. Because once you accept the fact that there are subdivided religions inside our country that has different beliefs, it means that you have shown to others that you are knowledgeable enough and you are giving a chance to those who are lacking freedom in their respective religions.
And lastly, to have freedom of religion is to have respect. In this age and time by simply showing respect to other religions despite of the contrary of beliefs and practices is showcasing what freedom of religion really is. For me, this is very essential first and foremost because if you give respect you will gain respect. Showing respect to other religions is to make everyone feel that there are no standards or qualifications to be accepted and to be a part of one nation. To sum it up, giving respect is by putting nation at peace, to feel loved and to love and to fully understand the differences in our lives.
Our country is a society built on liberation. We all know that our freedoms present are very essential, but the greatest of them all is freedom of religion. To achieve freedom of religion, people must accept and learn how to love, make peace, understand and respect. Despite of the dilemmas we are encountering nowadays, each and every one of us must know that stepping to one's belief is not a solution just to brag others down and to put yourself or the whole religion rather to be on the peak. We must always remember that we are brought and created by one Supreme Being.

On 21-24 May 2017, the Rt Hon Baroness Anelay of St Johns DBE, the Prime Minister’s Special Representative for Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict, visited South Sudan. This visit raised awareness of the work the UK is undertaking to support survivors of sexual and gender-based violence in the country and to encourage the leaders in South Sudan to take action.
Whilst in South Sudan, the Minister met with the new Chief of the Defence Forces and government officials to urge them to end the conflict, stop attacks on civilians and enable humanitarian aid to reach those in need across the country. She also met David Shearer, the Special Representative to the Secretary General for the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), to hear about the challenges the mission is facing to fulfil its mandate to protect civilians.
The Minister met with civil society groups, NGOs and UN agencies during a UK-funded UN Population Fund workshop, to look at the challenges around tackling the stigma that many survivors of sexual violence face.
On a visit to the town of Malakal, Baroness Anelay spoke with UK troops deployed to UNMISS, who are providing engineering and medical support. She also heard the challenges and risks women and girls face living at the UN Protection of Civilians camp.

Click here to register for the online event, which will feature two conversations that draw lessons from the past and make recommendations for the future.  On 10 January 1946, the UN held its first meetings in Central Hall Westminster, London. Delegates carried with them the hopes of the world, expressed through the opening words of the Charter: we the peoples of the United Nations, determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war. Across the UK, members of the newly-formed United Nations Association were determined too: they turned out in their thousands to show their support for the UN. Since then, UNA-UK has sought to enshrine the values of the Charter in the hearts and minds of people, to call for strong UK support for the United Nations, and to find ways to make the UN more effective. Today, this mission is more important than ever. As the world grapples with a growing list of challenges - including the Covid-19 pandemic - the need for global cooperation has never been more urgent or apparent. We must ensure that the decisions we take in the coming months and years help - and do not hinder - our vision of a safer, fairer and more sustainable world. This event will take place online and is jointly hosted by UNA-UK and UNA Westminster. You can register for this event via our Eventbrite page.
We hope that you will join us!

Press release: Baroness Anelay at UN to build on PSVI progress
The Rt Hon Baroness Anelay of St Johns, Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister for the UN and the Commonwealth and the Prime Minister’s Special Representative on Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict, will travel to New York this week, during the final days of the UK’s Security Council presidency.
The Minister will use her two-day visit to signal UK support for more women mediators within the UN system. She will outline the UK’s next steps on the Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative (PSVI) and discuss UN peacekeeping performance and reform.
On Monday, the Minister will meet with a range of senior representatives within the UN system. She will co-host events focused on increasing the number of women mediators within the UN and tackling sexual exploitation and abuse within peacekeeping missions. She will also meet with NGOs to discuss modern slavery.
On Tuesday, she will host an event to mark five years of the UK-led Initiative to end sexual violence in conflict , at which she will promote draft Principles for Global Action aimed at tackling the stigma attached to sexual violence in conflict. She will meet the new US Permanent Representative, Nikki Haley, participate in a number of meetings on sustainable peace, and will host Permanent Representatives from other Commonwealth countries, ahead of the UK-hosted Commonwealth Summit in April 2018.
Speaking ahead of the visit, Baroness Anelay said:
This visit to New York will allow us to make real progress on a range of UK priority issues at the UN.
As the UN increases its focus on gender and conflict prevention, I will be pushing for an increase in the number of women mediators in the UN system. Involving women in peace processes increases the chances for reconciliation and leads to stronger, more sustainable peace.
I will mark the five-year anniversary of the UK-led initiative on Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative during my visit. We must continue to build on progress to better support victims, and address stigma.
I also welcome the opportunity to discuss next steps in tackling sexual exploitation and abuse, to restore trust between peacekeepers and those they serve. I welcome the new UN Secretary General’s leadership on this issue.
