Barney McAll - Precious Energy
(Psychedelic Soul, Nu-Jazz, Synth Funk)
Grown from his love of the artists who've inspired him, Barney McAll's latest album is a celestial blend of psychedelic soul and funk-infused nu-jazz that makes for one colorful listen. While its songs are often drifting and dreamy, Precious Energy grounds itself in McAll's love of creation.
☆☆☆☆½
Four of Precious Energy's seven tracks are dedicated to an artist Barney McAll loves, and that alone makes it a special listen. The Australian composer has been a mainstay pianist and composer for decades now, working with legends like Gary Bartz and Roy Ayers while still keeping up with the contemporary jazz and R&B scenes, paying attention to the current day just as much as the classic artists who inspired him as a young artist. Now, he's blending the two together on his latest album, a rhythm section built of Hiatus Kaiyote band members Simon Mavin, Paul Bender and Perrin Moss, soul jazz singer Rita Satch, and a whole host of other instrumentalists that help build the kaleidoscopic world of Precious Energy. It's a document of everything that music means to him, songs inspired by the likes of Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders with a sound that is distinctly electronic and modern. It is one dense, majestic listen. Across its seven tracks, McAll and his team let these songs wander and drift, the sensual and spiritual nature of Precious Energy as musically important as it is thematically important. The tropical bossa nova kick of the opening title track - an homage to Pharoah Sanders and jazz singer Leon Thomas - gives a soft and consistent groove to the track that you can sink into as Satch's heavenly and rich multi-layer harmonies and creamy saxophone from Julien Wilson, Precious Energy's balmy sound never fully neutralizing as McAll brings strong melodies and heavenly arrangements to the mix. It's by far the album's best quality, songs you can relax to that don't feel like they're lacking in instrumental depth because of it, the bubbly Bata rhythm and soft atmospherics on Sweet Water a trampoline for Wilson's untamed improvisation and twinkly Rhodes from McAll, and even the snippy funk of Sun Rays, with its playful use of talkbox and gospel-style singing from the Cosmic Ventriloquist Choir, has a laid-back and effortless energy to it that keeps things from ever getting too heady. There's a natural chemistry and charm to how McAll and the rest of the instrumentalists play off one another, the psychedelic kick of Precious Energy allowing everyone to throw their own ideas into the mix without it ever overwhelming the songs, the free spirit and luminous experimentation McAll embraces here never ceasing to thrill. He also keeps it relatively simple with what he wants each song to achieve, Precious Energy's anthem-style hooks and barebones songwriting a way for McAll to tap into the warmth of spiritual jazz, the energetic post-civil rights music of those like Sanders and Coltrane that emphasized elation, love and emotion found in the eccentric writing of Wild Horses in the Morning Sky atop a chunky Herbie Hancock-style synth funk groove or the plush pop soul of Stevie Wonder homage Stevland, McAll tapping into the universal tension and sadness over the past few years and making songs that are principally optimistic and glowing. Precious Energy is such a wondrous listen because McAll brings to life such transcendent emotions in the title track's aquatic tranquility and gospel infused nu-jazz of Sweet Sweet Spirit (I swear, that melody has to be interpolating Giant Steps), an astounding level of thoughtfulness and emotional sensitivity put into these songs so that McAll's message is one you can feel immediately deep within your heart. Above the impressive cast of instrumentalists and incredible composition work here from McAll, the most important thing Precious Energy does is connect with you on that deeper spiritual level. Precious Energy is such an astounding success because it lives up to its name entirely: these songs are sharp, vulnerable and spellbinding. All of the people who came together to bring these songs to life are woven into the soul of each song, the singular touches Gary Bartz's passionate solo on Sweet Sweet Spirit and Jace XL's soothing vocals on Sun Rays just as important as any of the instrumentalists who are found on every track, McAll creating a democratized creative space where everyone has a say in how the music is shaped. There's something undeniably brilliant about what he's done here, outfitting 70s jazz and soul with modern production and instrumentation that's both nostalgic and futuristic at once, Precious Energy marrying the time McAll's spent working with beloved jazz musicians and his admiration of the newer generations with one beautiful, phenomenal listen. Precious Energy is the kind of album only someone like Barney McAll could make: an experience that is healing, communal, and heartwarming with its progressive take on jazz that manages to be emotionally resonant and forward-thinking without sacrificing the power of anything here.

MIX CD Nidana
Nidana

♔ MY NAVIGATION ♔
0.5 TYPES OF REQUESTS I WRITE:
One-shots (1k words or more)
Drabbles (below 1k words)
Headcanons (bullet point fics)
Blurbs (below 500 words)
Imagines (gif + a little blurb, around 500 words)
1.0 RULES:
Request via ask.
Always include what type of request you want me to write.
Specify because specification is very important as it helps me make your request as pleasing as possible, but try not to be too specific as I like the element of surprise.
If you want me to write something from my prompt list (click here): include the name of said character, category of the prompt and the prompt’s respective number (e.g. Jay Halstead, fluff 7).
1.1 Note: If you don't include what type of request it is that you want me to cook up, I will choose the type myself so don't come at me if you wanted a 2K worded piece of work and instead got an imagine with 200 words!
1.2 Note: Mixing the prompt with a plot line of your own is allowed, just make sure to follow the rules (1-3).
1.5 THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND:
Unless asked for, I will be writing with the Female!reader in mind (I like to exclude any gender relation and make it so that both genders could read and enjoy).
I respond to asks when the request has been qued to post and released on Ao3.
The maximum number of request you can send is 2. I know there is an option to send them in anonymously, but I really hope you will stick to this rule. Give others a chance to submit their wishes, and don’t make the line too big with by mass requesting (I close requests after I get around 30 requests).
Requests sent during seasons I have not watched or for characters that have yet to make an appearance in the show will not be written (exceptions exist).
I write one-shots but not a whole series unless I can see/want a continuation.
Themed requests (Christmas, Valentine's Day, New Year etc.) can be only sent during that time. I don’t accept Christmas requests during the month of May. The same goes for the rest.
I have every right to delete every request that does not fit within the rules stated above, or I feel uncomfortable writing. Also, it’s important to note that I don’t have inspiration to write every request that’s sent. It’s normal to not have inspiration, and because I prefer quality to quantity, if I see that I don’t have inspiration for a request then I will not write it.
Requests will be deleted if sent while my request box is closed. I won’t answer them as I feel like there is no need. On almost every informative post (+my bio, and if you’re on PC my theme under ‘blog status’) it will say whether the request box is closed or not.
English is not my first language but without digging myself my own grave this early on I want to say that I'm proud of how much I know, given that I never speak English unless in school.
Be nice because only constructive criticism is allowed. If you spot a grammatical error or a paragraph/sentence/word etc. that doesn't make sense, let me know. But be nice!
2.0 THINGS I DON’T WRITE:
LGBTQ+ topics/relationships (because I feel like I wouldn’t do a good job)
Real people, send only requests for characters in my writing list
Ships or OC, send only reader inserts
NSFW (mature content stories)
Noncon
Dark!fics
Romanticized mental illnesses
S*icide scenes
R*pe scenes
Racism/slurs
2.1 Note: P*dophilia, r*pe, s*icide might be mentioned in my Chicago P.D, Fire, Med shots (or other), but I will never explicitly write about those subjects or write about anything that is about/centered around them.
2.2 Note: Explicitly written smut is a no, I will not write that. Try to refrain from requesting steamy scenes too, as I will only put them in myself were I to deem it necessary for the WIP.
2.5 THINGS I DO WRITE:
Angst
Fluff/ WAFF
Fusion/ Crossover
Daughter/Wife/Sister!Reader
Here is me trying to explain what kind of requests I also take [x]
2.6 Note: It’s hard to list but to make it easier for you guys, I will write about almost anything as long as it’s not on my 2.0 bullet.
3.0 POSTING SCHEDULE:
Posts are usually posted between 01:00 A.M. and 05:00 A.M. CET (Central European Time).
Check schedule to see what's been qued to post.
3.1 Note: This account is NOT my work place. Everything here is written when I have time and I feel like writing. Requests that I find more interesting will most likely be written and qued to post sooner. I advise you to follow my blog, check regularly and sit tight until you see that it's qued. You can always check my navigation page and click on 'schedule'. Or simply click here.
3.2 Note: I am not a doctor nor a firefighter nor a policeman. I research whatever I can before I start writing and sometimes that takes hours. Nothing is 100% accurate (especially for events set in Chicago Med) although I hope it is.
3.5 WRITING LIST:
3.6 Note: Requests are currently OPEN for all fandoms!!!
3.7 Note: Your requests do not have to be strictly romantic (Sibling!Reader or other are also (obviously) allowed).
---More shows and characters will be added through time

Freak of the Week – Barney McAll
Australian pianist Barney McAll was voted in at number 83 in ABC Jazz’s Jazz 100. McAll was born in Melbourne in 1966, and received his Bachelor of Music from the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne. In 1997 he moved to New York to join saxophonist Gary Bartz’s band. As well as remaining to be a member of the Gary Bartz Quartet, he also plays with the Josh Roseman Unit, Fred Wesley & The JB's, Groove Collective, and Kurt Rosenwinkel's "Heartcore".
His 1996 debut album, Exit, was recorded in three cities on two continents with 19 musicians, with crews from Melbourne, Sydney and New York. McAll wrote or co-wrote nine of the twelve tracks on Exit, and today I have chosen his Freak of the Week. It was recorded with Americans Vincent Herring (alto sax) and legendary drummer Jimmy Cobb here in Australia.
The session with Vincent and Jimmy – recorded while they were here with Nat Adderley in ’94 – was very special. It seemed surreal cramming them into my small St Kilda flat to rehearse.

Collectables #6 (144° 58_ 55_ E, 37° 47_ 31_ S) in its new home. Found and collected by @barneymcall and installed in his amazing studio.
The print’s part of the photographic series "Collectables" commissioned by @kingsartistrun.
In the process of making the work, I located abandoned objects on the streets of Melbourne that might be collected. Rather than removing them, I took a photograph of each object in its location. After repeated printing and rephotographing, I printed the final images in the darkroom and framed them at home. I returned each representation to the site of the original object to be freely collected by the public. Operating as a form of gift economy, these works enter the narrative thread of the original found object, while also initiating a trajectory of their own.
1st image is by Barney McAll.
