Obscure Animation Subject #5: Best & Bester

Created by Anttu Harlin and Joonas Utti of 101 Dalmatian Street and The Unstoppable Yellow Yeti fames, head written by Ciaran Murtagh and Andrew Barnett-Jones and head directed by Kitty Taylor, it aired on Yle, YTV and Nickelodeon UK.

Its about two shape BFDI-like characters that are voiced by Rupert Simonian and Kathryn Drysdale that go into shenanigans while transforming into whatever they want. This show is eh, it doesn’t feel too special and the music sounds generic. It has decent animation though.

One thing I will point out is that its mainly produced by Nelvana. That studio I hate nowadays for supporting NFTs and co-producing the infamous All Engines Go. Their not the only studio involved as it was produced in collaboration with Gigglebug Entertainment and Eye Present.

Some writers from Gigglebug previous productions that worked on this are Kristina Yee (of The Unstoppable Yellow Yeti fame) and Ciaran Morrison and Mick O'Hara (of 101 Dalmatian Street fame). Online, the first episode is seen in English but the rest is the Spanish dub.

It would be appreciated if more episodes are available in English, but for my recommendation, it won’t hurt to watch it, but you won’t miss out on anything either. I wouldn’t consider it terrible, its just mediocre. Better than 101 Dalmatian Street though. Nothing beats the yeti.

Okay since more episodes have been uploaded in English this became outdated. However, the series is still not easy to find and some episodes probably became lost media (at least in English), so yeah.

Synopsis ~ A shy, quiet executive for a shipping firm who finds himself with a dilemma: he’s become smitten with his young temporary secretary but she’s the girlfriend of his Navy buddy - and the buddy is scheduled to be discharged in only a few days.

Note: “Gob” is a slang word for a sailor. This term first showed up in regard to sailors around 1909 and may have come from the word gobble. Reportedly, some people thought that sailors gobbled their food. The term also may come from the word gob, which means to spit, something sailors also reportedly do often.

Lucille Ball as (Dorothy ‘Dotty’ Duncan aka ‘The Girl’) is in her 52nd film since coming to Hollywood in 1933. 

George Murphy (Claudius ‘Coffee’ Cup aka ‘The Gob’) was in four films with Lucille Ball between 1934 and 1941. In 1959, Murphy served as guest host of “The Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse” when Desi Arnaz took a role in his own anthology series. He was also a performer in “The Desilu Revue” aired in December 1959. As the host of “MGM Parade”, he interviewed Lucy and Desi in February 1956.

Edmond O'Brien (Stephen Herrick aka ‘The Guy’) won an Oscar in 1955 for The Barefoot Contessa. He was nominated a second time in 1965. 

Henry Travers (Abel Martin) was nominated for an Oscar for Mrs. Miniver in 1943. He is best remembered for playing Clarence the Angel in It’s A Wonderful Life (1946). 

Franklin Pangborn (Pet Shop Owner) did four films with Lucille Ball between 1937 and 1946. 

George Cleveland (Pokey Duncan) did four more films with Lucille Ball till 1949. 

Kathleen Howard (Jawme) makes her only appearance with Lucille Ball. 

Marguerite Chapman (Cecilia Grange) makes her only appearance with Lucille Ball.

Lloyd Corrigan (Pigeon) did Two Smart People with Lucille Ball in 1949. He played the minister in “The Milton Berle Lucy-Desi Special” in 1959. He also did three episodes of “The Lucy Show.”

Mady Correll (Cora) makes her only appearance with Lucille Ball.

Frank McGlynn, Sr. (Pankington) makes his only appearance with Lucille Ball.

3G TRIVIA

The film was dramatized for radio on “The Screen Guild Radio Theatre” on October 9, 1944, also starring Lucille Ball and George Murphy. They rerpised their roles on radio once again for “Old Gold Comedy Theatre” on February 11, 1945. 

Maureen O'Hara was initially slated for the role played by Lucille Ball.  Ball and O’Hara had done the 1940 film Dance, Girl, Dance together. 

This film came towards the end of Lucille Ball's RKO days. She had already achieved leading lady status and would only make four more films for RKO before moving to MGM. She couldn’t know that she would one day own the studio with her husband, Desi Arnaz. Interestingly, RKO borrowed George Murphy from MGM for this film. 

This film's earliest documented telecast took place in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on  Sunday June 3, 1956 over TV station WFBG. That same week, Lucille Ball began filming season six of “I Love Lucy” in Hollywood. 

In 1971, “The Carol Burnett Show” spoofed the film with “A Gob, a Girl and Her Galoshes".

The movie was referenced in the Emmy-winning documentary “Lucy and Desi: A Home Movie”.

Piráti z Karibiku: Na konci světa - skoro tříhodinové utrpení

Piráti potřetí. Tentokrát je ve hře život Jacka Sparrowa, návrat kapitána Barbarossy, vztah Willa a Elizabeth, srdce Davy Jonese, zákeřné plány lorda Becketta, vypuštění bohyně Kalypsó, záchrana Billa Turnera a mnoho dalšího.První díl Pirátů z Karibiku vzbudil velké pozdvižení a rozpoutal vlnu pirátománie. Klíč k úspěchu spočíval v příjemném dobrodružném příběhu, kterému nechyběl nadhled, humor a samozřejmě nějaká ta akce. Vše pak bylo povýšeno na vyšší stupeň Johnny Deppem a jeho nepřekonatelným ztvárněním jedné z nejlepších filmových postav – Jacka Sparrowa. Ovšem nebyli by to ti správní hollywoodští tvůrci, kdyby je úspěch neponoukl k pokračování. Dvojka již ztratila něco z původního pirátského kouzla a pohybovala se na hraně přeplácanosti, ale stále to byla skvělá zábava. Třetí díl bohužel v nastoleném trendu pokračuje a utápí původně skvělý film v překombinovaném nudném scénáři. Today in history:

In 1905 the world's largest diamond ever, the Cullinan (weighing 3,106.75 carats), was found at the Premier Mine in South Africa. Named after a chairman of the mine, it would be presented to King Edward VII of England, then cut into some of the world’s largest cut diamonds. They now make up some of the crown jewels and other royal jewelry of England.

In 1926 Scotsman John Logie Baird gave the first public demonstration of the television to members of the Royal Institution in his laboratory in London. Many historians attribute Baird with being the first to use reflected light to produce a live, moving, greyscale television image. Now, television is a main medium in informing and entertaining the public around the world.

An early broadcast experiment

In 1939 the filming of the famous classic Gone With the Wind began.The story follows Scarlett O'Hara, a daughter of a plantation owner, in her trials of love during the turbulent Civil War and Reconstruction eras in the American south. It would become an iconic movie for America and Hollywood, as well as the lead actors, Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh.

The Wilkes Playmakers present Arsenic and Old Lace

Arsenic and Old Lace is a play by the American playwright Joseph Kesselring, written in 1939. It has become best known through the subsequent film adaptation starring Cary Grant and directed by Frank Capra.

 The play is a farcical dark comedy revolving around the Brewster family, descended from the Mayflower, but now composed of insane homicidal maniacs. The hero, Mortimer Brewster, is a drama critic who must deal with his crazy, homicidal family and local police in Brooklyn, NY, as he debates whether to go through with his recent promise to marry the woman he loves.

 His family includes two spinster aunts who have taken to murdering lonely old men by poisoning them with a glass of home-made elderberry wine laced with arsenic, strychnine, and "just a pinch" of cyanide; a brother who believes he is Theodore Roosevelt and digs locks for the Panama Canal in the cellar of the Brewster home (which then serve as graves for the aunts' victims; he thinks that they died of Yellow Fever); and a murderous brother who has received plastic surgery performed by an alcoholic accomplice, Dr. Einstein (a character based on real-life gangland surgeon Joseph Moran) to conceal his identity, and now looks like a famous horror-film actor.
